Our Verdict
The regular deal on Venture is to get 40,000 ($400), though we’ve seen it go up to 50,000 or even up to 75,000. This offer has the additional option of spending an additional $17,000 and getting an extra 50k points (100k total).
Basically, the initial $3,000 spend gets you the first 50k points, and after that, you’re getting almost 3% extra per $1 if you meet the extra $17,000 requirement. And that’s on top of the regular 2x everywhere which the card gets, so it’s a nice 5% back on the $17,000 spend. And they give a nice year-long time period to meet the spend.
If you meet the $20k requirement, you’ll have 140,000 points (7% back on your spend) which can be redeemed either as a travel credit to offset $1,400 in travel costs or you can get gift card redemptions in that amount. You can also transfer the miles to 12 travel partners that Capital One has. Through December 31, you can also offset dining and streaming charges, so this is a good time for non-travelers to get the card.
The Venture might also be interesting to some people as an everyday card. I was thinking of giving this one a shot, but realized I have the Chase Amazon 4% offer going on now, so won’t gain as much with the new card.
We’ll add this offer to our list of best credit card signup bonuses. If you’re going to apply, it’s worth checking out these Things to Know about Capital One Credit Cards first. Notably, Capital One is known to pull all three credit bureaus for each application. Keep in mind, you can freeze your Experian or Transunion and limit the pulls to just two. Another issue is that they seem to be stricter with approvals than other card issuers, and they may also have a rule to only approve one card per six months (hard pull won’t even be done beyond that).
