Both have a wealth of coverage options for drivers of all ages and in most states, but how do these rates and options compare to one another?
GEICO vs Esurance Coverage
In terms of coverage options, it’s hard to look past GEICO. Esurance is only available in 43 states and is somewhat limited in several of the states where it is available. For instance, in 6 of those 43 states, Esurance doesn’t offer mileage-based car insurance, whereas GEICO offers it in all 50 states.
GEICO also offers policy options such as rideshare insurance, which isn’t provided by Esurance, and it covers ATVs, boats, motorcycles, and RVs in addition to cars. Esurance can cover these vehicles, but that cover often comes via one of its partners.
Both companies are big and reputable, and both offer insurance coverage to meet the needs of the average driver. They both also offer homeowners insurance, renters insurance, and life insurance. But when it comes to variety, we can’t look past GEICO.
GEICO vs Esurance: Cost
GEICO simply can’t be beaten on price in the majority of states. It consistently offers cheaper rates, with an average of about $200 to $300 for basic insurance cover and more for full cover. It tops many lists of the cheapest car insurance providers and beats most of its competitors in most states.
That doesn’t mean Esurance should be dismissed entirely, however. Price isn’t the only thing to consider here and some drivers in some states may even find that Esurance is the cheaper option.
Average Cost of Minimum Cover Auto Insurance: GEICO vs Esurance
Your state of residence is one of the biggest factors impacting your car insurance rates. Even if you have a good driving record and stick with the bare minimum coverage, the difference from one state to the next could be $600 to $700.
This is partly down to the number of thefts, car accidents, animal collisions, and other incidents that occur in the state, as well as the number of cars on the road, but it also has a lot to do with what minimum coverage entails.
In some states, minimum requirements cover bodily injury liability and property damage cover, but in others, you’re required to have underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage, personal injury protection (PIP) and/or medical payments. To give you an idea of how much you will pay when choosing the bare legal minimums, take a look below.

Average Cost of Full Cover Auto Insurance: GEICO vs Esurance
Full coverage car insurance doesn’t quite span all available options. However, in addition to liability cover, it also includes collision coverage, which pays-out in the event you hit a tree, wall or another object, and comprehensive coverage, which pays when your car is damaged by floods, high winds, vandalism, and other non-accident damage.
We looked at both Esurance and GEICO to see which of these insurance companies consistently had the best rates when adding these types of cover to an insurance policy. Again, these numbers have been rounded off and represent a general demographic. They may not be the quotes you receive but should give you an idea of what to expect based on your location.

GEICO vs Esurance: Car Insurance Discounts
Both GEICO and Esurance offer a multitude of driver discounts and these can significantly reduce your insurance premiums. Generally, the discounts offered are very similar and in line with what other car insurance companies provide, but with all things considered, GEICO has the edge over Esurance:
- Airbags (Front-and-Side): Esurance Discount is up to 33%; GEICO is up to 40%.
- Anti-Lock Brakes: Esurance Discount is 5%; GEICO is 5%.
- Anti-Theft Devices: Esurance Discount is up to 25%; GEICO is 25%.
- Defensive Driving Course: Esurance Discount is 10%; GEICO Discount varies.
- Good Driving History: Esurance Discount is up to 40%; GEICO is 26%.
- Good Student: Esurance Discount is 10%; GEICO is 15%.
- Federal Employee or Member of the Armed Services: Not Offered by Esurance; Up to 15% with GEICO.
- Multi-Car: Esurance Discount Varies; GEICO is 25%.
- Multi-Policy (Bundling): Both offer this discount, but their rates vary.
- Upfront Payment: Not offered by GEICO; 10% with Esurance.
GEICO vs Esurance: Customer Satisfaction
This is one of the few areas in which GEICO struggles to keep up with Esurance. According to J.D. Power, Esurance has slightly higher ratings with regards to customer satisfaction. In fact, in some states, it is considered the number 1 provider.
That doesn’t mean it’s the best car insurance provider overall or even in that state, but it means that customers think highly of it once they sign on the dotted line and that’s good news for prospective policyholders.
However, claims satisfaction was a little higher for GEICO across the United States, with Esurance receiving a higher number of complaints. Many of these complaints were minor and relate to payment delays and call center issues, but it’s still an important consideration.
GEICO vs Esurance: Overall
The car insurance industry is vast, with a number of providers offering nationwide coverage at affordable rates. Furthermore, the ease at which you can get quotes and compare one provider to another means you have no excuse not to get the best possible deal on your car insurance.
In our review, it’s clear that GEICO came out on top and, overall, is the better provider. But these are just two fish in a huge sea of possibilities. We recommend getting a quick online quote from both and then comparing these quotes to other providers, including State Farm, Progressive, USAA (if you qualify), The Hartford, and Liberty Mutual.
Only then can you be sure you’re getting the best and cheapest car insurance.
