When I spotted sneak peeks of this Brooklyn loft floating around Pinterest, I was immediately smitten. The space injects a California-casual vibe into a historic building in the heart of Williamsburg. The juxtaposition couldn’t be more perfect.
Originally a schoolhouse in the 1800’s, the building in which this apartment resides features soaring ceilings, arched doorways with original transoms and beautiful hardwood floors. But the period details have all be softened by the addition of modern, minimalist furnishings, and neutral color palette.
There’s a gorgeous mix of high and low in this home as well. Cool vintage items like the set of woven dining chairs mingle with a timeless mid-century credenza, while the living room features sofas and shelving from CB2. But a gorgeous marble coffee table and Noguchi lights offer unique, individual style. When you mix and match like this everything is elevated.
I love the rustic luxe mix in the remodeled kitchen. Sawkille Co stools mingle with a timeless marble island and brass hardware (that are actually paper towel rods!), yet the kitchen uppers are simple raw open shelving. Yet, the black and white color palette of the kitchen accessories feels decidedly modern. It’s a very yummy combo indeed.
A lovely ceramics collection and Bloc Shop prints hang in perfect harmony.
The master bedroom is particularly minimal but also lush. The textiles and variety of materials – a paper lantern pendant, striped bed throw, moroccan rug and ceramic table lamps all blend beautifully. Everything is low slung, making it feel laid back and very relaxed, yet also refined.I really really love this look.
The children’s feature similarly muted colors, but tons of texture, print and pattern that make them anything but boring. Instead they feel cozy and fun.
Earlier this summer, I profiled the homeowers’ vacation spot in Montauk and I love looking at how these two homes both differ but also relate. While the laid-back style permeates both homes, I appreciate the more European feel of the loft’s architecture. It’s a great reminder that you can accentuate a grand home’s bones without having to fill it with precious, unlivable pieces. You can create a comfortable, family friendly space in this type of building. And now I’m more motivated than ever to finally finish my own!
What do you think? Do you think the grand and the casual mix well here?

Poufs add the trifecta of texture, function, and nuance to your space, according to Newhart. This option has a gorgeous woven, natural exterior that compliments almost any color scheme.
“It has a rounded silhouette, which can help break up boxy edges in your space — for example, if you have a rectangle coffee table and squared-off couch,” Newhart told Insider.
Additionally, there’s a bottom zipper so you can add extra stuffing over time if it begins to flatten with use.
Get your space ready for spring with floral throw pillows.
This throw pillow is available in two colors. Target
A bright pillow is a perfect, yet subtle way to spruce up your space for spring, and Newhart said this floral option doesn’t disappoint.
You can snag the burnt-orange one for modern, boho spaces or the classic blue choice for more traditionally styled interiors.
Newhart also suggested buying several of these pillows so that you can repeat the same pattern throughout your space and between rooms to make your home feel more cohesive.

Newhart recommended giving your entryway, kitchen, or hallway a subtle upgrade by incorporating this vintage rug.
This distressed piece brings texture and interest in a gorgeous, neutral palette that compliments natural tones like wood, rattan, wicker, and caning, Newhart explained.
It also comes in indigo and all kinds of sizes, but Newhart said her pick is the 7-foot-long runner.
Elevate your art with this simple, yet on-trend gold frame.
This frame is versatile enough for nearly any gallery wall. Target
If you’re looking for an easy way to elevate an art piece or a DIY creation, this minimal, matted-gold frame is a visually interesting solution.
“The gold is on-trend and gently draws the eye to the art as the focal point,” Newhart said.
She added that this frame is affordable enough to build an entire gallery-wall grid out of and a versatile option to add to an already-existing photo spread.
Add visual texture to your space with this beautiful and affordable throw blanket.
This throw blanket is sold in six colors. Target
This throw blanket can spruce up your space for about $20.
Newhart said it is amazingly soft, has great visual texture, withstands washes, and resists pilling.
Plus this throw also comes in multiple colors, from bold mustard to neutral cream, so there is a shade for any space.
Accent your bedroom with a soothing tranquility candle.
This candle’s four-wick design results in a smokeless experience. Target
According to Newhart, this candle is a bedroom essential. It smells fresh, yet is soothing without being too overpowering, and the four-wick design touts a smokeless burn.
In addition to its tranquil scent, it boasts a gorgeous jar that transforms this candle from an aromatherapy element into an accent piece.

As if Leanne Ford wasn’t already my design spirit animal, her new lighting collection for Target, which launches today, speaks directly to my heart! It’s timeless, it’s modern, it’s funky, it’s perfect.
Leanne is becoming the grande dame of repurposing found materials to DIY her own light fixtures. Thankfully, she’s made it easier for the rest of us, creating Rope Net Pendants that look vintage or found. No one has to know your light is from Target.
An oversized pendant is universally chic and timeless. This one comes in white, black and brass. I love the look of the pendant hung really close to the ceiling.
While there’s a distinct boho vibe to many of these lights, Leanne proves that you mix and match styles to create truly modern spaces that will feel current long after the current boho craze fades.
While this collection just launched today, with prices all under $100, I have strong feeling it’s going to sell out rurl quick. So get to shopping right now friends. I know I am!
Walton Gogginsis selling his Los Angeles home, a lovely 5-bedroom home tucked behind dense landscaping just above Hollywood Boulevard. The actor, known for his prominent roles in The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, Justified or Django Unchained and now the star of CBS’s heartwarming sitcom The Unicorn, bought the home back in 2010, when he was getting ready to welcome his son Augustus, now 10.
The two-story brick home has both French and Spanish touches as well as beautiful, eclectic interiors that combine vintage décor and boho chic influences with modern elements. The results are so spectacular that the home caught the eye of over 20 publications, with Architectural Digest, Maison Du Monde or GQ all featuring it in the past. Now, Goggins is looking to sell the charming home for $3.35 million and has enlisted the help of Josh Myler of The Agency to find a buyer.

Stylish vintage interiors pay tribute to the roaring 20s
Originally designed and built by Harold O. Sexsmith in 1927, Goggins’ home retains many of its original features. From the original coffered front door to the hardwood floors, or the arched openings to the casement windows, every detail has been meticulously restored, maintaining the original charm, warmth, and essence of the 1920s.
The foyer that welcomes visitors is accentuated by original period tile floors. To the left, there’s a stylish and sophisticated formal living room, whose surrounding windows and overall scale allow light in from every side. The most striking elements in this room are an oversized, original stone wood-burning fireplace and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that line one of the walls.

The living room opens to indoor/outdoor dualling lounges, which are connected by French doors and offer privacy for more intimate gatherings. In fact, the whole house is filled with comfy gathering places, both indoors and out.
“My philosophy is a person shouldn’t have to take more than six or eight steps without having an opportunity to sit down for a conversation to begin,” the actor once told a GQ reporter that toured his home.

A wonderfully elegant kitchen
The main floor is completed by a fully equipped eat-in chef’s kitchen with wood and marble open shelving, punctuated by elegant brass fixtures that complement the rich, dark wood cabinets. The actor’s kitchen features a lovely dining area that, just like the living room, is surrounded by top-to-bottom bookshelves that complete the inviting, bohemian look. Next to the kitchen, there’s also a large pantry with accompanying laundry facilities.

The bedrooms are bright and inviting
On the main level, there’s also a guest bedroom with a full en-suite bathroom. But the bulk of the sleeping quarters are on the second level, where there’s a primary suite (boasting a chic bathroom and large walk-in closet) and two additional guest bedrooms and a bathroom.

Walton Goggins’ retro home office
One of the most eye-grabbing rooms of this celebrity house is the home office, with its distinctive retro style and vintage furniture. With big windows inviting plenty of natural light in, the actor’s office also has a comfy seating area and a wall made entirely out of corkboard, perfect for memorabilia or for staying organized with work files and charts.

Stepping outside to a whimsical backyard
In line with the overall romantic feel of the European-inspired home, the outdoor area is whimsical and inviting, with a large swimming pool that is framed by citrus fruit trees and string lights. Since the actor finds gathering spaces to be of utmost importance, the quiet, private backyard features two outdoor dining areas, and extra seating set around a fire pit.

If your home is filled with distressed furniture and mismatching dishes you grabbed at a flea market, then you’re likely a denizen of a decor style known as shabby chic.
Shabby chic was all the rage in the fabulous ’80s and early ’90s, thanks to its de facto founder, Rachel Ashwell, and her sweet Santa Monica, CA, shop of the same name.
To join in the shabby chic fun, you simply had to hang up some lace and sand away at a piece of old furniture and call it “distressed.” The best shabby chic pieces have bohemian flair, which gives folks more license to go wild with DIY ideas.

But alas, the reality of this decor scheme can be downright messy in the wrong hands. Truth: Shabby chic really should be mostly chic, with subtle hints of shabby, people! Otherwise, you run the risk of a trashy, near-homeless vibe in your own home.
Don’t fall down the shabby chic rabbit hole. Here are 10 no-nos when you want to go boho.
1. Mobiles and dresses
A favorite shabby chic design trick is to hang vintage dresses, lace curtains, intricate mobiles, and dream catchers in an effort to seem worldly and effortless. But honestly, the eye doesn’t know where to land with things all over the place in this crammed boudoir, so nix a few before your entire home looks like a dressing room.
2. DIY cabinets and sink
I guess it’s great someone was able to repurpose a rusty old sink, but the cabinets with ripped screens are a tad too much. Used items are fine, of course (why not save money where you can?), but if it looks like you dumpster-dived for something, it’s time to return it to the junkyard.
3. Macrame
Knitting is fun. Ditto for needlework. And while weaving macrame is also a nice hobby, when you get to the point where your creation can span an entire wall, you need to stop. Macrame in small doses is a classic boho and shabby chic accessory—just don’t let these knots and fringe get to the level of crazy town.
4. Old enamel
How many colanders and painted teapots does one person need to own? I’d say one colander for spaghetti draining and zero old-lady teatime accessories because you know darn well you don’t consume this much caffeine. Plus, flaking enamel from yard sale and flea market finds may not be entirely safe to drink from. (Use these for flowers instead.)
5. Cutesy dishes
Where to begin with this scary pile of vintage detritus? When you’re shopping at Goodwill or a secondhand shop to set up a shabby chic display, leave the creepy faces and side-eye lambs behind. Instead, stick to graphic T-shirts and mod skirts—and that’s it.
6. Distressed wood and trite sayings
Signage with old adages you’ve heard a million times aren’t only a hallmark of the ever-popular modern farmhouse style; they also rear their head among shabby chic lovers, too. Still, don’t they just inspire you to hold your head and sigh (or cry)? At the very least, hang the sign behind a door so it’s not visible 24/7.
7. Whitewashed brick
Just like distressed furniture, brick with rubbed-off paint looks unfinished and cold. In fact, painted brick in general is kind of a pain in the home, thanks to its chipping and fading. Put down your brush and bucket, and give your stone and brick a rest!
8. Ruffles and roses
Ruffles and roses are sweet on a baby’s jumper or your toddler’s bed skirt. And you might dig this look if you were staying at your 90-year-old great aunt’s house, too. Shabby chic walks a fine line with granny chic, so unless you’re an octogenarian, leave these fluffy shams behind.
9. Messy beds
We get it—you’re casual and also a grown-up—so if you don’t feel like making your bed, you won’t. Plus rumpled sheets channel a free spirit. But with all those plants looming large overhead, you can’t help but wonder about the leaf pieces and other dead plant bits that are dropping onto you bedding every night. Keep dirt away from where you sleep, please.
10. Rattan
How comfortable is this bed, really? And must the mirror and lantern also be woven from sticks and fronds? Investing in sturdy furniture is part of adulthood, so think carefully before pulling the trigger on a rickety bed frame, even if you’re a boho gal at heart.
From encouraging positive dreams to trapping the bad ones, here are some ways in which dream catchers are believed to affect our dreams and thoughts.
Dream catchers: Everything you need to know about these bohemian adornments
Dream catchers are hands-down one of the most popular home decor items. They adorn the wall of every teenager’s room. They are pretty, bright and colourful in appearance and have a boho vibe to them. They are easy on the pocket and can be hung at any corner to instantly pep it up.
But when it comes to their actual usage, of influencing dreams, do they really work? There are many theories as to how dream catchers work their magic and how they positively affect our thoughts and dreams. Here are some ways in which dream catchers influence our dreams and our thought processes.
1. The centre of the dream catcher, that has the web inside a circle, is said to capture all the bad dreams and the negativity. While the feathers below it are said to encourage good and positive dreams.
2. Dream catchers are often perceived as a thing that protects children. They are usually hung over the bed to protect the children from evil spirits and nightmares while they are sleeping.
3. There is a reason behind the dream catchers being hung directly over the bed. The reason is that it is believed that the dream catcher catches the bad dreams in the web once the sun sets and when the sun rises the next morning, the bad dreams that are trapped in the dream catcher expire.
4. Dream catchers are believed by some to be totems that represent good energy. They help to neutralize bad energy and increase the positive energy in the room.
5. The beads that are next to the feathers in a dream catcher are said to symbolise the good dreams that could not pass through the web and thus became immortalised as sacred charms.

Jenny and Dave Marrs of “Fixer to Fabulous” are always busy making over other people’s homes, but in the latest episode, they get personal—turning their efforts toward renovating their own rental property.
In the Season 2 episode “Boring Turns Into Boho-Chic,” Dave and Jenny learn that their friends J’Aaron Merchant and Jasmine Hudson are moving from New Jersey back to northwest Arkansas. The Marrses decide to fix up their rental property so Hudson and Merchant can move in.
The problem: This rental needs a lot of work, and with only $95,000 and four weeks to finish the project, it’s going to take a ton of clever solutions to get this home fixed up in time.
Related Articles
To make things worse, Jenny and Dave run into issues when they have to decide whether to renovate the house to their renters’ boho tastes (in the hope of encouraging them to stay for a long time) or to give it a more classic look to try to appeal to other renters in the future.
Read on to learn how the Marrses renovate their rental property, and learn how to create a great space for any guest, no matter how long or short their stay.
No cash for real terrazzo? Make your own
White paint and new windows make a big difference to this house.
HGTV
The Marrses are determined to polish up the first impression of this home, so they refresh the exterior with white paint and new windows.
These improvements make the house look fantastic, but when it’s time to work on the front walkway, they aren’t sure what to do. Jenny wants to install a terrazzo walkway, but knows they don’t have the budget for such a pricey material.
This homemade terrazzo makes for a great walkway.
HGTV
So they decide to craft their own makeshift terrazzo out of spare pieces of marble.
“We’re gonna take this marble, break it into teeny little pieces, then put it in concrete to create terrazzo steps,” Jenny says.
The terrazzo look-alike has tons of character and gives a unique look to the front of the house.
Lose the closet to make room for a bar
This bar area is a fun and funky way to be welcomed home.
HGTV
Jenny knows that this home’s entrance is disappointing. The front door opens right into a small coat closet—and while a closet may be functional, it doesn’t give guests that “Wow!” factor.
Instead, she comes up with an idea to turn this closet into an arched minibar area where they can display pretty drinkware on open shelving, while a cabinet below provides useful storage.
“It’s a built-in that’s functional and really pretty,” she says.
Dave builds the bar area, and when it’s finished, it looks amazing. The wood shelves look perfect, and the beautiful blue-green cabinet really makes the feature stand out.
With a rental, it’s OK to take small risks for the sake of style
Jenny usually loves brick, but she doesn’t think it’s the right look for this fireplace.
HGTV
Jenny wants to give this house a boho-chic look, starting with the fireplace.
“Imagine if the tile had a little bit of these blush tones in it,” she suggests.
Right away, Dave disapproves, objecting that it’s too risky. He feels the design should be a little safer, to ensure that future renters will enjoy the look as well.
This pink fireplace was a risk, but it looks great!
HGTV
Still, Jenny decides to go for the blush tile, which is installed from floor to ceiling over the fireplace.
In the end, it looks great—the look is definitely boho and definitely feminine, but it’s not so wild that a future renter wouldn’t want to live in this space.
Try some flashy fabric at the breakfast bar
This boho kitchen table is a great addition to the kitchen.
HGTV
Jenny and Dave redo the kitchen with fun colors and a fresh, youthful feel, so when it comes time to design a breakfast table, they want the style to match. Jenny decides to add a fun, flashy fabric to give the space some sizzle.
“I want this dining nook to be a little bit different,” Jenny says. “I want the bench to have a cushion, and then I have a back bolster cushion as well.”
She chooses a blush material for the bolster pillow and a bolder, black-and-white pattern for the seat. It’s a great combo that makes this dining nook stand out.
Repurpose a garage as a workspace by adding a glass door
This garage-turned-workspace is light and bright.
HGTV
Jenny knows that Hudson and Merchant both need workspaces at home. While they’re able to turn the third bedroom into an office for Merchant, they also need an art studio for Hudson.
So, Jenny gets an idea to turn the garage into a studio. It’s an easy swap, as long as she can change one feature: the garage door.
“We’re going to replace this garage door,” Jenny says, looking at the old, worn-out door. “Instead of replacing it with just a normal garage door, what if we replace it with a glass garage door, so that it lets in natural light and this becomes her studio?”
While a glass garage door can be expensive, Jenny and Dave spring for the update and are able to give Hudson a stunning studio.
It’s the perfect solution for anyone who needs a home office but who has assumed that the garage would be a no-go because of the lack of light.
