Since the calendar turned to 2024, the internet has been abuzz with trend reports and home decor predictions that offer a glimpse into what lies ahead in the world of interior design.
For many, these lists may seem overwhelming, especially if you’re not planning to embark on a full-scale renovation this year. But fret not; there are simpler ways to elevate your home by getting creative with a DIY project or two.
Below, we’ll introduce you to 7 home trends experts predict will be big in 2024 and the DIY projects that can help you breathe new life into your living spaces.
DIY Projects That Will Elevate Your Home
Get your toolbox ready. From textured walls to living walls, home renovation experts predict these DIY projects are exactly what you need to elevate your home in 2024.
1. Using reclaimed materials
As more and more of us aspire to make eco-friendly home improvements in 2024, it’s no surprise that using reclaimed and recycled materials is gaining popularity among DIY enthusiasts.
Beyond their environmental benefits, reclaimed and salvaged materials bring a distinctive ‘well-loved’ quality that enriches interior designs with texture and depth. The weathered patina of reclaimed wood, for instance, can seamlessly enhance a home with a modern rustic style, while salvaged fireplaces and reclaimed bricks effortlessly complement modern farmhouse aesthetics. These materials possess a timeless charm, making them an ideal choice for elevating your home’s overall look.
If you’re seeking a quick and manageable DIY project that can be completed in an afternoon, consider exploring your local antique market for a set of vintage drawers and transform them into a unique plant display. Alternatively, give rustic scaffolding boards a fresh lease on life as distinctive kitchen shelves, or reimagine tin ceiling tiles as a one-of-a-kind kitchen backsplash.
For those willing to take on a slightly larger project, a salvaged barn door can be flipped into a statement headboard, and ordinary internal doors and windows can be replaced with antique shutters to achieve a truly bespoke finish.
2. Adding texture to walls
While the memories of popcorn ceilings and orange peel walls might remind you of outdated interior design trends from yesteryears, wall texture is poised to make a stylish comeback in 2024.
Embrace the classic elegance of a knockdown finish or the rustic charm of limewash paint to infuse subtle drama into your walls. For a touch of warmth, consider decorative plasters like stucco or tadelakt. The beauty of these unique finishes is that they can be applied to your walls through a DIY approach using a trowel or roller, making it a cost-effective way to enhance your home’s ambiance.
And remember, texture doesn’t have to be just tactile. There are plenty of ways to introduce visual texture to your walls. Leading industry names like Benjamin Moore are bringing color-washed walls back into the spotlight this year, and even famous figures like Blake Lively are embracing this trend in their own homes.
3. Biophilic home improvements
‘In 2024, biophilic design and creating healthier living spaces are poised to be prominent trends,’ predicts Christine Marvin, Vice President of Strategy & Design at Marvin. To fully embrace this trend, consider decorating with plants, choosing natural color palettes and materials, or increasing natural light in your living areas.
Kriss Swint, design lead at Westlake Royal Building Products, emphasizes the importance of a closer connection with nature and its elements, citing potential benefits like increased well-being and productivity. ‘Growing concerns about wellness and the environment are driving demand for backyard improvements and the integration of nature into design. This includes features like green roofs, large windows, and living walls.’
wooden kitchen cabinetry is predicted to dominate kitchen trends this year.
However, before you jump into a full-scale kitchen remodel, consider that you can revamp this space without breaking the bank by resurfacing or refinishing your existing cabinet fronts.
Rather than reaching for your hammer right away, consider stripping paint from wood cabinets you already have to reveal the material beneath. Alternatively, you can replace your current kitchen cabinet fronts with custom-made ones that perfectly fit your space. Consult a local woodworker for bespoke cabinetry tailored to your kitchen’s dimensions or explore options like preloved wooden cabinet fronts available in salvage yards or online marketplaces.
‘A great DIY hack for achieving premium quality without overspending is using Ikea cabinets combined with custom fronts,’ says Archie Tkachoff, Founder of Arteum.design. ‘This approach is not only cost-effective but also versatile, allowing for the application of custom doors on new and existing cabinets.’
walk-in pantry?
‘In 2024, we expect to see pantries being upgraded with intelligent organization solutions, providing more space and functionality,’ predicts Laurel Vernazza, Home Design Expert at The Plan Collection. ‘When designed with floor-to-ceiling storage, the walk-in pantry can be used to conceal air fryers, coffeemakers, and larger appliances such as dishwashers, with plenty of room for pots and pans, spices, and dry goods’.
Simply clear the kitchen closet and assess its layout. Install adjustable shelving for better storage, add hooks or racks for spices and dried goods, and improve visibility with an overhead light.

7. DIY built-in bookshelves
The classic built-in bookshelf remains a popular choice for 2024, and it’s easy to see why. With just a modest amount of DIY expertise, you can easily turn an ordinary bookshelf into a faux built-in feature that instantly elevates your home.
Start by measuring your space and acquiring the right number of standalone bookcases for the job. We recommend options such as Ikea’s Billy bookcase or Wayfair’s Lagner bookcase, as they are well-suited to this task. Securely anchor these bookcases to the wall, ensuring they are level and perfectly aligned.
To achieve that coveted built-in appearance, add a plywood surround, crown molding, or decorative trim that complements your room’s style. After carefully caulking and sanding any rough edges, apply paint or stain to the bookshelves, allowing them to seamlessly blend into their surroundings.
Home renovation trends are typically less transient than paint trends, such as the color of the year, and can significantly improve the aesthetic and functionality of your home.

Netflix’s latest bid for the upcoming Oscars season brings together stellar acting from both well-established and emerging stars, an eerie atmosphere, unsettling sound effects, and a story that’s immensely captivating — even when not much is happening.
And at the center of the action (or lack of, at times) is a perfectly appointed house that perfectly contrasts the chaos the characters are surrounded with.
The postapocalyptic thriller, directed by Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail, tells the tale of a family that rents a luxurious home for a weekend away with their kids, with their vacation cut short by the appearance of the house’s owners, who are seeking refuge in the middle of the night following an apparent cyberattack.
Starring big screen darlings like Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, and Myha’la, the movie is based on the National Book Award-nominated novel Leave The World Behind by Rumaan Alam.

And while we don’t want to spoil the movie for those who haven’t had a chance to watch yet, the plot sees the two families “reckon with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.”
The ‘Leave The World Behind’ house in Old Westbury
While most postapocalyptic movies build elaborate sets to serve as a backdrop for the production, Sam Esmail’s movie was filmed on location at a real-life house in Long Island.
You’ll find the Leave The World Behind house in Old Westbury, a charming village in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island in New York.
Known as the Open Corner House, the Long Island residence is a striking modern farmhouse that was completely rebuilt in recent years, after the former French-style home on the property burned down.
So owners Roula and Fotis hired award-winning New York-based The Up Studio to design the 5,200-square-foot contemporary farmhouse as a home for their family.
From the layout — which was restructured to better fit the L-shaped lot and maximize nature views — to the addition of floor-to-ceiling windows, dark steel accents, and warm wood floors, THE UP STUDIO created a bright, light-filled, and modern home for the couple, one they didn’t necessarily expect the entire world to see.
Talking to CURBED Magazine, John Patrick Winberry, a partner at The Up Studio, admitted that he “didn’t know he was designing for a movie apocalypse when he started the project with his team, but the house has a cinematic quality all the same.”
It was featured in Dwell magazine
The house’s beauty didn’t go unnoticed.
Well before it was a glam Airbnb rented by Julia Roberts, the Old Westbury house received plenty of accolades for its stellar design — and was featured in quite a few home design magazines, including Home Adore and Dwell.
You can take a full tour of the Leave The World Behind house and get a better understanding of the design concepts it was based on by watching the full Dwell interview with both the home’s designers and its owners.

Creams, beiges, and taupes, often overlooked in favor of more vibrant colors, are again making a resurgence in the world of home decor. These neutral shades bring a sense of calmness, warmth, and versatility to living spaces. Whether you’re designing your new house in San Marcos, CA, or Oklahoma City, this is a good style because it effortlessly complements the serene and diverse landscapes of both regions, providing a timeless backdrop for your home that harmonizes with the natural beauty of coastal California or the heartland of Oklahoma.
This Redfin article explores the renewed popularity of these understated hues, offering insights from interior design experts on how to use them effectively in your home. From creating texture to incorporating pops of color and adding personal touches, discover the secrets to making these neutral tones the foundation of your stylish and inviting living spaces.
1. Beige decor isn’t boring
“Beige does not have to mean boring,” says Stegall Studios. “Using neutral tones like taupe, cream and beige can create an immediate sense of calmness and tranquility. The key to getting it right and making it interesting is incorporating different textures and patterns into this color palette.
The creamy colored room below was in need of a boost, so we added a 3-dimensional porcelain tile to the fireplace. We kept it in the same creamy, taupe color palette but the textural change of the tile and the subtle pattern added immediate warmth and character and completely changed the feeling in the space.”

2. The palette is highly versatile, inviting personalization
“In today’s fast-paced world, people are seeking spaces that promote relaxation and well-being. These colors create a serene and calming atmosphere, which is highly desirable in modern living,” suggests Acacia + Spruce.
“Creams, beiges, and taupes serve as a versatile backdrop, allowing homeowners to easily incorporate various decor styles and color accents, making it adaptable to changing preferences. Despite their neutrality, these hues can be personalized with textures, patterns, and pops of color, giving homeowners the freedom to express their individuality while maintaining a cohesive look.”
3. Incorporate texture into the mix
“My best design tip is to incorporate layered textures into a neutral home design,” recommends Beach Nest Interiors. “This prevents the space from feeling flat and creates interest. Varying tones of beiges, tans, and creams gives a warm, relaxing energy and creates a perfect backdrop for thoughtful pops of color in wall art, lamps, and pillows. Adding in natural organic elements like wood, plants, and stone will really take this design to the next level.
Bonus tip: use the ceiling to infuse warmth and a bit of drama into your space. Have tall ceilings? Paint them a darker tone than the walls or add wood beams or textured wallpaper.”

4. Be purposeful when laying colors, patterns, and texture
K.C. Customs, Inc. recommends that “When working with this color palette, we recommend you pay meticulous attention to texture, layering plush fabrics, rich woods, and subtle patterns to achieve depth and visual interest. Thoughtful lighting plays a crucial role in accentuating the inviting ambiance of these hues. These colors not only stand the test of time but also adapt seamlessly to diverse design styles, making them a versatile choice for every homeowner’s vision.”

5. Warm colors are in
“Designing homes with creams, beiges, and taupes is a design trend that is gaining fast traction as grays slowly fade,” shares Brandie Crain Interior Design. “Whereas grays can leave a space feeling cold if left to their own devices, softer forms of brown bring warmth to a room and feel classic, but still fresh. Wood tones and natural, woven accents pair well with these colors—combined, they create a sense of warmth and comfort. The palette can be styled with black or gold accents to give it a more modern touch or whites and medium to dark grays to give it a more old-world feel with deeper contrast.
These colors can be used on walls, but I like to paint walls and trim the same warm white and use taupes and darker beiges on anchoring pieces like couches and cabinetry and lighter beiges and creams for accessories, but avoid dark browns and beiges and creams with too much yellow, which tend to look outdated.”

6. Millennial gray is out
“Recently, the resurgence of creamy tones is replacing the bright white, high contrast trend that ruled nearly every sector of home design for many years,” notes Courtney Brown. “A natural, creamy color palette subtly softens your home with lived-in warmth and a calming atmosphere.
The key to pulling off this tone-on-tone design? Layering. Through layering a variety of textures, neutral accents and organic materials, a palette of creams, beiges, and taupes is both timeless and fresh. When used as your home’s foundation, it creates a seamless flow from one space to the next, allowing an elevated and elegant bedroom and a relaxed, cozy living room to organically co-exist.”
7. Use natural, dark pops of color like wood
“The warm natural palette has become a trend because it’s really fool proof,” insists AESTHETIK Design by Victoria Tik. “I love adding dark pops for contrast and using white oaks when it comes to woods and or flooring to really bring the look home. This look stands out because it’s timeless and so adaptable, you can go from ultra modern to victorian or bohemian using this same palette.
To keep this look unique style, folks should feel free to incorporate their own personal touches with souvenirs from their travels or little pops of dark to balance things out. Have fun with it, don’t take design too seriously or it won’t be fun. And at the end of the day, we all just want to create a beautiful space that’s truly livable.”

8. Add pops of color with plants and accessories
“Use different shades of the same color to create depth and interest,” suggests Youth Design Philly. “Add plants and flowers to add life and color to the space. Add pops of color through natural materials like wood, stone, and leather to add warmth and texture. Take advantage of natural light whenever possible. Keep the furniture simple and uncluttered. Add a personal touch and fun to the space with accessories, artwork, or plants.”

9. Make models before committing to a design
“Make sure when looking at finishes you know where it’s going,” recommends JL Interiors. “Lighting in a space is very important to create harmonious design. If you have a wall tile and a floor tile, look at them in different spaces. Make sure your wall tile is perfectly leaned upwards on a wall, and your floor tile is laid flat on the ground, so you know what they will look like in the end.
Paint is extremely important, make sure to not pick only one color from a color deck. Paint up multiple samples on the wall where the wall doesn’t get light, then you will understand which sample works best with your design.”

10. Mixing elements creates visual impact
“The incorporation of woven baskets and handcrafted ceramics can add interest and texture to the neutral palette,” suggests Studio Squire. “Additionally, the inclusion of plants such as succulents and air plants can effectively connect the room to nature while imparting a sense of warmth and comfort. Incorporating plants into a neutral design can elevate its visual impact to its fullest potential.
The infusion of mixed metals, such as brass and oil-rubbed bronze, can further enhance the palette by imbuing it with a sense of warmth and grounding, thereby elevating its overall aesthetic appeal. The strategic use of black and dark, warm grays can lend a touch of sophistication to the neutral palette.”

11. Neutral home decor is a timeless classic
“A successful interior is like a well-dressed person. They know well that creams, beiges, and taupes are timeless classics,” shares School of Sketching by Olga Sorokina. “They’re unlikely to combine a striped jacket with a checkered shirt, and if they do, they’ll do it tastefully, because knowing the rules allows you to break them.”

In the ever-changing landscape of home design and architecture, one trend that has stood the test of time is the open floor plan. Over the years, open floor plans have evolved to meet the changing needs and preferences of homeowners. As we step into 2023, let’s explore the fascinating journey of open floor plans and delve into what today’s homebuyers are seeking.
Enjoying our content? Subscribe to our free weekly newsletter to get real estate market insights, news, and reports straight to your inbox.
The concept of open floor plans can be traced back to the early 20th century when architects like Frank Lloyd Wright began experimenting with eliminating walls and barriers that separated living spaces. This change from traditional compartmentalized layouts reflected the changing social dynamics and the desire for more fluid and connected living spaces.
The 2000s marked a significant shift towards the open concept layout. Homeowners started favoring larger, combined spaces that seamlessly integrated living, dining, and kitchen areas. This design not only created a sense of spaciousness but also promoted interaction among family members and guests.
As we step into 2023, the open floor plan continues to be a sought-after feature for homebuyers. However, there are distinct preferences and variations that have emerged:
- Defined zones. While open, the modern open floor plan often incorporates subtle distinctions between functional areas. Homeowners are looking for ways to maintain a sense of purpose while still enjoying the openness.
- Flexibility. The need for adaptable spaces has grown, especially after the experiences of remote work and learning. Homebuyers are attracted to open layouts that allow for easy reconfiguration based on changing needs.
- Seamless indoor-outdoor integration. With an emphasis on outdoor living, buyers are seeking open floor plans that seamlessly connect indoor spaces with outdoor patios, decks, or gardens, blurring the line between inside and outside.
- Nooks and retreats. As much as people enjoy communal spaces, there’s also a demand for private nooks and quiet corners within the open layout. These spaces can serve as reading corners, work niches, or relaxation spots.
- Materials and finishes. In 2023, homebuyers are drawn to a mix of textures and finishes that help define spaces within the floor plan. This might involve using different flooring materials or accent walls to visually separate areas.
- Sustainability. Environmentally conscious buyers seek open floor plans prioritizing energy efficiency, natural lighting, and sustainable materials.
If you’re considering incorporating an open floor plan in your home or as part of a real estate investment, here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Consult professionals. Engage architects and designers who specialize in open layouts to ensure your design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
- Balance and harmony. Strive for a balance between openness and defined zones to cater to various activities and moods.
- Personalization. While trends provide inspiration, tailor the open floor plan to your specific needs and lifestyle to fully enjoy the experience.
What is beautiful about the home-buying process, is that your home is fully customizable. Whether you look for open floor plans off the bat or you renovate your home to be one, open floor plans are sure to bring out connection and space in your home. Very few of us can freshen our home design on an endless budget. But you don’t have to feel constrained by your wallet. That’s because not every piece needs to be the highest quality.
We asked Dallas interior designers where they splurge and where they save to help you stretch your home-decorating fund.
Invest in key parts of your bedroom.
No surprises here. We spend a third of our lives sleeping, so your bedroom matters — even though it’s an area guests may not see.
“Your main bedroom is where you should splurge on yourself,” advises Denise McGaha, owner and principal of Denise McGaha Interiors. “A lot of my clients leave that to the last, and I think it’s so important for you to have a really luxurious, amazing night’s sleep. If you don’t sleep well, you’re not fun to be around the next day.”
McGaha says the mattress is key, but linens are too. So that’s where to concentrate your funds. What about the rest of your bedroom design? Consider buying lower-tier antiques or quality used pieces instead of brand-new furniture.
You can also look for deals on lamps, rugs and throw pillows, creating a designer-approved look that is budget friendly. “Every time you walk in that space,” McGaha says, “I want it to make you smile.”
Chairs trump table in your dining room.
What about the star of the show in the dining area: the table? McGaha says don’t spend a lot, even though it’s one of the biggest pieces, size-wise, in your home.
“I want to encourage people to buy vintage or used tables, because the chairs are where it’s at. People are paying attention to the chair and they’re going to see the back of the chair. Do they even see the base of the table? Especially if you love to entertain, you’re going to put a tablecloth over it a lot. So let’s get you a beautiful antique or vintage table, or use your grandmother’s table, and get new chairs.”
When it comes to what’s over the table, that’s another place to go all out. “Lighting is where you want to spend money,” says Nikki Watson, founder of The Design Quad. “Especially with a new build, people will put in basic fixtures. But if they want to update the space and make it look awesome, then lighting makes a big difference.”
How to redecorate your house for free — using items you already own
In the living room, spend money where people sit.
The living room is all about the return on investment — or in designers’ terms, “seat time.” The more time someone is likely to sit there, the more you should invest in the piece, says McGaha.
So spend time and money picking out a great sofa that will last a long time, but go for less expensive pieces when it comes to to accent furniture. “Like a lounge chair that goes in the room with your really great sofa, you don’t have to spend nearly as much money on that. That way if you get tired of it, you can change it out,” McGaha notes.
“I wouldn’t spend tons of money there because people don’t sit in a lounge chair as long as they relax on a sofa.”
Watson agrees that a sofa is really worth investing in — a neutral sofa, in particular. Bargain accent pillows and throws can be incorporated to stay on trend.
A living space can also be a good choice for spending on lighting, wallpaper and custom upholstery. After all, this room is where we spend many of our waking hours.
“I love to splurge on upholstery,” McGaha shares. “By upholstery I mean getting a piece that’s custom for you, meaning it’s deeper or it’s got a different fill on the cushion, so that every time you sit down you say, ‘I just love this sofa.’”
Where can you save in a living room? Look under your feet. “Rugs are something trendy, so they can be replaced pretty often,” points out Watson.
“I wouldn’t say spend a lot of money, because that trend will change. I know we have faded antique rugs that have been the style for about three to four years now, but now geometrics are coming back in.”
Limit what you spend in your guest room.
It can be tempting to go big in the guest room to really make an impression on people who stay with you, but resist the urge, says McGaha. Your investment in a space should relate to how much time you, the homeowner, spend there.
“I love to use artist prints instead of originals in hallways or guest bedrooms or bathrooms. I’m always going to tell you not to spend all your dollars in those secondary spaces,” says McGaha. “And while I love my guest rooms to be luxurious and really elegant for guests, let’s not put something in there that only that one person gets to enjoy. They’re only there for a few nights.”
To save in a guest room, you could paint instead of doing high-end wallpaper. Your window coverings can be sale items; so can guest linens and bedding. When you look for deals, you can more easily change out those elements for a style update.
Go for cost-effective pieces in kids’ rooms.
Keep in mind that kids tend to be harder on furnishings, and their tastes will change as they grow up — so feel free to choose lower-cost, trendier pieces for their spaces. McGaha says the bed is a particular place you can save in a child’s room. Use a metal bed frame and score a fun and comfy upholstered headboard.
Don’t neglect your entryway.
You might not think about splurging on the entry to your home, but hear us out. It’s often the first thing you see when you return home and the last thing you see before you leave. And it’s the first and last impression of your home that guests have, too.
This is where you want to go for original art, amazing lighting and the wallpaper of your dreams. And best of all, it’s a small space compared to other areas in your home, so you can choose just a few things and still have a big impact.

In recent years, the modern farmhouse design style has taken the interior design world by storm, becoming one of the most sought-after and beloved trends. This aesthetic combines the warmth and charm of traditional farmhouses with the clean lines and simplicity of contemporary design, resulting in a timeless and inviting atmosphere.
Looking to transform your home into a modern farmhouse haven? This Redfin article offers essential elements and home improvement tips for achieving this style, whether you’re buying a house in Austin, TX or remodeling a home in Nashville, TN.
The key elements of Modern Farmhouse design
Neutral color palette: Modern farmhouse interiors often feature a neutral color scheme as the foundation. Whites, creams, soft grays, and muted earth tones set the stage for a calming and cohesive atmosphere. These colors create a backdrop that allows other design elements to shine.
Natural materials: Incorporating natural materials is a hallmark of the modern farmhouse style. Exposed wood beams, reclaimed wood flooring, and stone accents add warmth and character to your home. Opt for furniture and decor made from materials like reclaimed wood, metal, and stone to enhance the rustic appeal.
Open floor plans: Modern farmhouse homes typically embrace open floor plans, promoting a sense of spaciousness and connectivity. Removing walls and barriers between the kitchen, dining, and living areas allows for a seamless flow and encourages family and friend interaction.
Farmhouse sink: A classic farmhouse sink is a focal point in the kitchen. These deep, apron-front sinks are not only practical, but also add a touch of nostalgia and charm to the space. Pair it with a stylish and functional bridge faucet for an authentic farmhouse look.
Shaker cabinets: Shaker-style cabinets are a popular choice in modern farmhouse kitchens. Their simple, clean lines and recessed panel doors offer a timeless aesthetic. You can paint them in soft, neutral colors or go for a more rustic finish for added character.
Barn doors: Barn doors have become a symbol of modern farmhouse design. These sliding doors save space and contribute to the rustic ambiance. They can be used to separate rooms or conceal storage areas.
Industrial lighting: Incorporate industrial-style lighting fixtures, such as pendant lights with metal or glass shades, to add a touch of contemporary flair to your farmhouse decor. Edison bulbs and fixtures with matte black or aged brass finishes work well in this context.
13 expert tips for achieving the Modern Farmhouse Style
Achieving the modern farmhouse style is an art, and it often requires attention to detail and a keen eye for design. Here are some expert tips to help you master this popular aesthetic:
1. Mix old and new
“Modern farmhouse design combines the warmth of tradition with the sleekness of modern design,” says Small House Solutions, a custom design build firm. “It’s characterized by open spaces and a balance between old and new. To give it a fresh twist, consider using shiplap on unexpected surfaces, like ceilings or islands, embodying the fusion of textures that defines the style.”
2. Texture matters
According to Newberry Architecture, an architecture company, “The importance of texture in modern farmhouse design cannot be overstated. It’s about taking the traditional concepts of a farmhouse – natural elements, craftsmanship, and simplicity in construction, and using textured materials, wood, streams of natural light, and earth tones to reimagine them in an innovative way. This could involve a creative take on paneling, or a fresh finish on a classic material, all while blending in the use of modern hardware, fixtures, or furniture. It’s a surprising view of traditional architecture that makes a space feel pioneering.”
3. Simplicity is key
“One effective way to bring modern farmhouse design to life is focusing on simplicity,” suggests Indie Farmer, a farming magazine. “This entails using a neutral color palette and incorporating rustic materials and textures. In our own modern farmhouse self-build, we opted for white walls, large windows, and a polished concrete floor with exposed aggregate. We kept the external design of the house simple, using black corrugated metal for the walls and roof, with contrasting wooden cladding in the recessed areas around the large sliders. The interior was finished with a mixture of mid-century furnishings, modern artwork, and some rustic antiques to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.”
4. Incorporate statement pieces
According to Casy Honeycutt, Vice President of Quicksilver Custom Builders located in North Carolina, “When it comes to statement pieces in your modern farmhouse design, choose farmhouse-inspired fixtures and furnishings. This could include shaker-style cabinets, barn doors, farmhouse sinks, industrial lighting fixtures, and exposed wooden beams. To further elevate your space, add personal touches by customizing it with vintage or family heirloom pieces, family photos, and unique decor items that make the space feel warm and welcoming.”
5. Quality over quantity
McAllen Interior Designer emphasizes that, “Modern Farmhouse Design represents the sleekest and cleanest version of the Farmhouse Style. When working on a Modern Farmhouse project, it’s crucial to avoid using fake or look-alike materials. Instead, opt for natural stone, wood, brass, leather, and objects that have aged beautifully with patina. Choose furniture with clean lines, create textile layers, and resist the urge to go overboard with farmhouse decor. Avoid placing chicken figurines in your kitchen or hanging farmhouse signs. Instead, embrace muted and neutral colors, keeping in mind that less is more in achieving the desired aesthetic.”
6. Functionality matters
HomeDesigns AI, an AI platform for redesign ideas, underscores the importance of functionality in Modern farmhouse design. “It’s not merely a passing trend, but rather a lifestyle choice that resonates with many,” they say. “This style seamlessly blends traditional elements like exposed wooden beams and neutral color palettes with modern amenities and smart home technology, resulting in a unique fusion of rustic charm and contemporary sophistication. For enthusiasts of farmhouse design, the essence lies in creating a warm, inviting space that strikes a harmonious balance between the old and the new, and between functionality and aesthetics. It’s about crafting homes that are not only visually appealing, but also comfortable and practical to live in.”
7. Find harmony between rustic and modern
Nikki’s Plate, a lifestyle blog, points out, “The modern farmhouse design style is a perfect blend of traditional rustic charm and modern functionality. What sets modern farmhouse design apart is its innovative integration of technology and eco-friendly systems for energy efficiency. The mix of materials like reclaimed wood with sleek surfaces such as concrete or metal adds a contemporary edge, while clever storage solutions maximize space and functionality. Overall, modern farmhouse design embodies the ideal combination of classic and contemporary elements, resulting in a warm and inviting space that exudes charm and character.”
8. Add natural accents
“This interior style employs bright, light, and airy colors, such as white, muted grey, or earthy browns, paired with natural and organic textures like wood, rattan, metal, stone, and brick,” says Fresh Design Blog, a source of modern and contemporary interior design. “It also embraces the infusion of natural accents like potted plants, fresh flowers, to bring the outdoors in. In addition, it promotes the use of fresh, woven fabrics and prints that foster comfort and relaxation, a refreshing departure from the fussy vintage fabrics of traditional farmhouse interiors.”
9. Contemporary elegance
Endemic Architecture, a contemporary architecture company, advises, “When considering the design of a modern farmhouse, it’s essential to celebrate the simple forms, materials, and neutral colors associated with a farmhouse. Equally important is to avoid pastiche. One effective way to achieve this is by emphasizing key elements like chimneys, roofs, or porches, even to the point of exaggeration or manipulation. This fosters renewed architectural expressions that are both familiar yet slightly strange, or what we call ‘almost familiar’.”
10. Seamless integrate the indoor and outdoor spaces
“A distinct characteristic that makes these designs stand out is the thoughtful integration of indoor and outdoor spaces,” says Architecture Collection, an architecture and design community. “This is often achieved through large windows or even entire glass walls that let in an abundance of natural light, creating a harmonious connection between the interior and exterior living areas.”
11. Avoid unnecessary extravagance
Purcell Timber Frame Homes, experts in custom home design and prefabricated luxury homes claims, “The modern farmhouse embodies timeless simplicity. It’s characterized by clean gable rooflines, typically in white or soft gray board and batten cladding, and a focus on functionality over ornate details. Tall vaulted gable ceilings, a straightforward color palette, and the balance of core living areas define this enduring style. It champions simple, efficient, and sustainable design, avoiding unnecessary extravagance – a true ode to timeless simplicity.”
12. Use an efficient layout
Boutique Home Plans, a custom home plans company, offers insights into creating a timeless modern farmhouse through thoughtful layout design. “The key is to start with a traditional farmhouse massing and footprint, and then open up the living space into a more contemporary layout and flow. Traditionally, farmhouses were simple rectangular structures, organically tacked on to each other as the family’s needs evolved.”
13.Focus on exterior elements
According to DJK Homes Eco-Smart Home, a green custom homebuilder, “When working on your Modern Farmhouse exterior, consider layering white lap siding and board and batten to create texture at the front elevation. Incorporating a standing seam metal roof over the porch or accenting a row of windows adds a contemporary touch. To infuse natural elements, use stained cedar accents at the front columns or add gable details for a sophisticated yet rustic look.”
Modern Farmhouse – The bottom line
Modern farmhouse design effortlessly blends the charm of traditional farmhouses with contemporary elegance, creating a timeless and inviting atmosphere. Whether you’re drawn to its neutral color palette, use of natural materials, or open floor plans, there are many ways to infuse this style into your home.
Expert tips, such as mixing old and new elements and prioritizing functionality, can guide you in achieving the perfect modern farmhouse look. With its harmonious combination of rustic and modern elements, this design style offers a warm and welcoming aesthetic that stands the test of time.

self-expression, color and creativity. Does orange make you smile? Dress your kitchen in the happy hue. Love a variety of styles? Do a mashup.
The look goes by many names. Fashion writer Dawnn Karen referenced the feel-good brain chemical in her book “Dress Your Best Life,” holding that “dopamine dressing” — wearing clothes in your own, individual style — gives you positive feelings.
Decorators and influencers say the same thing happens when we throw out old decor rules and step into a space adorned with personal touches. We’re more relaxed. More creative.
People are asking themselves what colors and patterns they really love, “and then bringing those features into their spaces — even if it goes against conventional decorating advice or what they might have seen online 10 years ago,” says Lauren Phillips, associate director of special projects at Better Homes & Gardens.
‘BARKITECTURE’ AND OTHER WAYS TO USE A ROOM
The trend toward making rooms more comfortable, functional and personal gained steam during the pandemic, when many people were homebound. And it continues to grow, Phillips says.
“Unused guest rooms are home offices. Formal dining rooms become craft spaces. And ‘barkitecture’ is having a moment — installing dog baths and other pet-specific features,” she says.
Decor is awash in aesthetic “cores” — Barbiecore, cottagecore, coastal grandma, mermaidcore.
“But I don’t take it to mean we’re bouncing from trend to trend super quickly. To me, it means people are defining their own style, and really getting to the root of the designs they love, even if that’s a little more colorful, kitschy or funky,” says Phillips.
SOCIAL MEDIA HAS LOOSENED THE CREATIVE REINS
There’s lots of inspiration on the internet. “If, 15 years ago, we all wanted the picture-perfect kitchen we saw online, today it’s all about taking a trend or beautiful interior that you see on TikTok or Instagram and pulling out the details you love,” says Phillips.
“Gen Z is on the cusp of becoming our new homeowner,” says Amanda Kruse of Upspring PR, a New York-based marketing firm for real estate, design and interiors.
And they’re more likely to mix styles for a personal spin, she says.
ARTSY ELEMENTS
Emilie Munroe began designing a San Francisco family’s Victorian home by leafing through a sheaf of torn-out magazine images from the client.
“We knew immediately our design should exude happiness and inspire curiosity,” says Munroe.
A tiny powder room got an exuberant pink-and-black, animal-print wallpaper. In a tight hallway next to a window, there’s a kaleidoscopic wallpaper, an abstract rug and a Basquiat-patterned chair.
London-based design editor Cara Gibbs, meanwhile, has noticed the free-wheeling use of paint.
“I feel like it used to be wacky to paint a room pink from top to bottom, but now the application of these bright, poppy palettes is chic, interesting and most importantly very livable. I’m here for it!” she says.
So is Massachusetts designer Nicole Hirsch. She’s put a zingy green — she calls it “alligator” — on a bathroom ceiling. Tangerine on a playroom ceiling. Cobalt blue, lipstick pink and chrome yellow add lively punches on furnishings.
HIDEAWAYS
In her own California home, designer Alison Pickart has the kind of roomy closet that storage-challenged homeowners would envy. But she saw value in a different use.
“It was a hall closet, but with its generous size and great natural light from a back window, I just felt like the space could be ‘more,’” she says.
So she turned it into a little “phone room” for herself. “It seemed like the perfect size and place to escape, with some privacy to make a call.”
Clara Jung of Banner Day Interiors worked with clients on a San Francisco ranch house that’s full of big, airy spaces. But nudge the secret panel in the living room bookcase and you’ll find a cozy, color-saturated, album-lined music den. There’s a vintage wood bar and a sprawl-worthy crimson rug.
“The homeowners are avid LP collectors,” she says, “and the husband’s a musician.”
Jung was ready to install a door when the clients suggested creating the secret entrance instead. “We loved the idea!” she says. “It’s the perfect escape for an audiophile.”
Maybe that’s the new decorating rule: Create your own “perfect escape.”
