Adopting a rescue or shelter dog doesn’t just give a needy animal a home. It can provide a playmate for your kids, a jogging buddy for you and a loyal companion for everyone to cuddle with on the couch. But a new pet can also come with unexpected vet bills, which is why you might want to consider pet insurance.
Pet insurance policies can help pay for treatment if your furry friend gets sick or hurt. In some cases, they may also cover vaccinations and other routine care. Here’s how to decide whether pet insurance is right for your rescue dog.
Estimate the cost of vet care
It’s impossible to know which medical problems a given pet may have in the future. However, researching the breeds you’re interested in can help you get a sense of which health conditions are most likely to crop up, says Dr. Antonio DeMarco, chief medical officer at GoodVets, a chain of animal hospitals with locations across the U.S. Some of these conditions can be both serious and expensive to treat, he says.
For example, large-breed dogs like golden and Labrador retrievers are prone to hip dysplasia, a deformity of the hip joint. Some dogs may need surgery to treat it, costing thousands of dollars.
A local vet can advise you on potential health concerns and how much it might cost to manage them. They can also help you estimate the price of routine care.
Understand pet insurance
Pet insurance likely won’t reimburse every dollar you spend at the vet. For example, most plans won’t cover pre-existing conditions that your dog had before you bought the policy. So if you adopt a senior dog with diabetes, you’ll need to pay for the treatment yourself.
For the same reason, you can’t simply wait to get a policy until your vet diagnoses an injury or illness. DeMarco has had pet owners ask him if they can buy insurance after their dog tears an ACL. “[You] sure can, but this isn’t covered,” he tells them.
Most pet insurance plans pay to treat illnesses and injuries but won’t help with routine care unless you buy extra coverage. That coverage may be worth adding for certain dogs, says Maureen Sosa, director of pet support at the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, D.C. Smaller dogs are more prone to dental disease and benefit from regular cleanings, which wellness plans can help pay for.
When shopping for pet insurance, check for deductibles and copays. Say your plan will pay 80% of your expenses after you’ve met the $500 annual deductible. That means you’d have to spend $500 on your pet’s treatment in a given year before your plan would start reimbursing you.
Your policy may also have a maximum payout limit, such as $5,000 or $10,000 per year.
Get pet insurance quotes
The average cost of accident and illness coverage for a dog is about $640 per year, according to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association. However, you might pay more or less depending on where you live, the coverage options you choose and the breed and age of your dog.
You can get online quotes from most pet insurance providers. Check rates from at least three companies to make sure you’re getting the best price for the coverage you want.
Pet insurance isn’t worth the cost for every rescue dog. Policies may be prohibitively expensive for older dogs, especially if they already have chronic conditions that the policy won’t cover. In these cases, you may be better off skipping insurance and setting up an emergency fund for vet expenses.
Consider your peace of mind
One of the biggest benefits of pet insurance is avoiding heart-breaking financial decisions. Sosa has seen owners forced to surrender pets because they couldn’t afford to treat their medical conditions. “The economy is in a really bad place,” she says. “That’s trickling down and affecting what people are able to afford.”
Even worse, some owners may have to euthanize their dogs if the treatment for a serious condition is simply too expensive, DeMarco says. “As veterinarians, that is the worst-case scenario for us.”
You may go years without having to use your pet insurance. But in a crisis, having the policy can give you peace of mind, DeMarco says. You’ll know that “if those situations arise, you’re going to be able to handle them financially and not have to make decisions based on finances rather than what’s best for your animal.”

Whether you are looking to pay off your student loans, save for a vacation, retire earlier, or whatever else, there are many reasons why you may want a side hustle.
As a nurse, though, you may be wanting something that will fit into your already busy and tiring schedule.
When it comes to finding side work, there is no shortage of options for nurses. But, not all side jobs for nurses are created equal.

Best Side Hustles For Nurses
Medical transcription
Transcription is when you turn audio files or video content into a text document. As a medical transcriptionist, you would be converting voice recordings from doctors and others in the medical field into formal reports.
Medical transcriptionists are required to be knowledgeable about medical terminology, HIPAA, and more, which makes this a side hustle that a nurse would be somewhat familiar with.
Medical transcriptionists earn around $20 to $25 an hour.
There are also other types of transcription work that are not medical related. There are many businesses looking for transcriptionists – since general transcriptionists convert audio and video to text for virtually any industry, there really isn’t a typical client. Examples include marketers, authors, filmmakers, academics, speakers, and conferences of all types.
You can learn more at How To Become A Transcriptionist From Home.
Lactation consultant
A lactation consultant is someone who specializes in breastfeeding.
A hospital may have you on call, you may go in person to people’s homes to assist them with breastfeeding issues, you may start a website where you help families online, and more.
My lactation consultant at the hospital when I gave birth to my daughter Marlowe also happened to be a healthcare worker at the pediatrician’s office that we brought her to. So, she definitely had more than one form of income!
Night nanny
A night nanny (or sometimes called night nurse if they are a nurse) is someone who helps new parents take care of their children overnight.
You would be employed by a family, usually for a few weeks or a few months after a baby is born. You would be helping parents at nighttime so that they can get more sleep as well as learn how to take care of their new infant.
You will be changing diapers, feeding the baby, helping the baby go to sleep, and more.
A night nanny typically works 8-12 hours overnight.
Night nannies are sometimes licensed practical nurses or registered nurses, as new parents many times want the skills and expertise that a nurse has.
You may be able to find night nanny jobs through word of mouth, or on websites such as SitterCity.com or Care.com.
Telehealth nurse
Telehealth nurse jobs are in high demand and will continue to grow. A telehealth nurse is a nurse who sees patients online, such as by video or phone. You may be working part-time or full-time as a telehealth nurse.
As a telehealth nurse, you would be assisting patients with minor health problems as well as advising them if they should go to the emergency room or urgent care, for example.
A telehealth nurse may work from home (and simply require an internet connection), at a physician’s office, hospital, and more.
As a telehealth nurse, you are still required to be a registered nurse and to have passed the NCLEX examination.
Start a blog or website
I know a few nurses who have started blogs, and this is because a blog can help you make income in your spare time with a flexible schedule.
So, what is a blog? A blog is a website. A blog is content that is written on a website. It usually consists of articles, like the one you are reading right now.
Blogs can vary from person to person. You may create a blog to journal, to teach on a topic, to sell something, to tell a story, and so on. There are no exact rules about what your blog has to be used for.
You can blog about many different topics such as personal finance, travel, lifestyle, food, family, home, DIY, and more.
You can learn how to start a blog with my free How To Start a Blog Course (sign up by clicking here).
Become a caregiver
As a registered nurse, you have highly valuable skills that make you in demand for caregiving jobs, such as taking care of children and adults.
As a caregiver, you may be helping the elderly, helping people get ready for the day, taking care of them for a day, grocery shopping for them, and more.
You may be able to find caregiving jobs through word of mouth (as nurses are very desirable for these positions) or on websites like Care.com and Craigslist.
Sell printables on Etsy
A printable is a digital product that someone can download and print at home. Examples of printables include grocery shopping checklists, gift tags, candy bar wrappers, printable quotes for wall art, budget templates, and patterns.
What makes this great for a nurse looking to make extra income is that you just need to create one digital file per product, and then you can sell it an unlimited amount of times.
So, this can be a great way to make money without having to use up all of your free time outside of work.
You can sign up for this free ebook that helps you figure out where to start when it comes to selling printables on Etsy.
You can also learn more at How I Make Money Selling Printables On Etsy.
Make Canva templates
Making Canva templates is similar to selling printables – you just need to create them once, and you can sell them an unlimited amount of times.
Canva is an online graphic design website. On Canva, you can sell premade designs to other Canva users so that they can edit and customize them.
Some examples of Canva templates include ebooks, workbooks, Pinterest pins, and more.
People all around the world use Canva to help with the graphic design side of their business, and templates make their lives so much easier.
You can head to this article to learn more at How I Make $2,000+ Monthly Selling Canva Templates.
Sell stickers
Selling stickers could be stickers that you have printed out and are shipping to customers, or you may be selling stickers for them to print on their own. You would be creating your own designs on stickers and can sell them for years to come.
Stickers are extremely popular right now and will most likely be for years. Stickers are used for so many different reasons, and you don’t need a lot of equipment to start a sticker business.
You don’t need graphic design skills either – this is something that you can learn quickly and even teach yourself.
You will need a cutting machine (perhaps you already have a Cricut cutting machine?), a printer, sticker paper, and ink to get started.
You can learn more at How To Make $1,000+ A Month Selling Stickers Online.
CPR instructor or First Aid instructor
As a CPR instructor or First Aid instructor, these may be classes that you are hired to teach part-time. It may just be a few hours a week and you would be teaching others CPR and First Aid.
There are classes for those who are expecting a child, prepping for the wilderness, for employees in all industries, and even classes for those who are getting into sailing (I personally have taken these sailing classes!).
Rent out spare rooms or a home
You may be able to earn extra income by renting out a spare bedroom or by investing in rental property to rent out in whole (such as an apartment or a house).
You can learn more at How This Woman In Her 30s Owns 7 Rental Homes.
Rent out your stuff
There are other things you can rent as well.
Renting out your stuff can feel somewhat passive, and if you’re not using it then it may make perfect sense for you.
Here is a list of things to rent out and which platforms are best:
Home bakery
You may be able to make extra cash by making baked goods at home.
In fact, I know someone who is a nurse, and on the side, she decorates and sells amazing-looking cookies for events. She started out decorating cookies simply as a hobby, and people started asking if they could hire her to make specialty cookies for baby showers, weddings, and more. This is now a side hustle for her that she loves.
You can learn more about this topic at How To Make Extra Money By Starting A Home Bakery. Here, you’ll learn about the equipment needed to start a bakery, food laws, tips on pricing your baked goods, and more.
I also recommend reading How I Earned Up to $4,000 Per Month Baking Dog Treats (With Zero Baking Experience!) if you are wanting to make dog treats.
Pet sit
With this, you may be watching pets in your own home or the pet’s home, or you may be walking them during the day, playing with them when the owners are gone, giving them their medicine, feeding them, and more.
While it would most likely be hard to be a pet sitter or pet walker on a day when you have a nursing shift, this may be something that you can schedule for on your days off, as you can pick your days and hours by selecting clients that best fit your schedule.
If you’re interested in watching pets in your home, Rover is a platform where you can list your services and find clients.
Become a virtual assistant
A virtual assistant is an assistant who works from their own home (instead of in person).
As a virtual assistant, you may find part-time or full-time work, and you may be able to be flexible with your hours. I have virtual assistants and they all have flexible hours, which can be great for someone who is a nurse and may not be able to work on days when they have a long shift.
As a virtual assistant, you may be helping a company manage their social media, scheduling appointments, managing their email inbox, data entry, and more.

Start a TikTok account
I follow a few TikTok accounts that are all about being a nurse, and they are very informative and entertaining. Or, you can start a TikTok that’s not related to being a nurse at all!
There are over 1.5 billion users on TikTok and many people are able to earn an income on this social media platform doing many different things.
From personal finance tips to comedy, day in the life to travel, and more, there are many different topics you can cover on your own TikTok account through making social media content.

Begin a YouTube channel
As a YouTuber, you may decide to start a channel about being a nurse, or about anything else!
There are many different types of YouTube channels out there.
A great positive of starting a YouTube channel is that, like blogging, you can create your own schedule, and work only on the days that you want. So, it does not have to interfere with your schedule as a nurse.

Cosmetic nurse
As a cosmetic nurse, such as an aesthetic nurse injector, you may be working in a doctor’s office or medical spa.
You may be doing injections, photofacials, microneedling, and more.
Resell items online
If you are looking for a flexible job as a nurse, one to look into may be reselling items online, such as on Craigslist, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace. There are many other online marketplaces as well.
Plus, it’s something that anyone can start because many of us own things that we could probably sell.
My friend Stacy Gallego was a nurse who resold items in her spare time. She made over $100,000 in sales by flipping used items too and actually retired as a nurse so that she could pursue her flipping side hustle full-time! You can read more about her story at How I Made $100,000 Selling Used Items.
Stacy learned how to build a flipping business from my other friends Melissa and Rob. They are the flipping experts! Some of the best items that they’ve resold include:
Something they bought for $10 and flipped for $200 just 6 minutes later
A security tower they bought for $6,200 and flipped for $25,000 just one month later
A prosthetic leg that they bought for $30 at a flea market and sold for $1,000 on eBay the very next day
A lift that they found in the trash (and asked the owner for permission to take) that they sold online for $7,500
They have a helpful free webinar, Turn Your Passion For Visiting Thrift Stores, Yard Sales & Flea Markets Into A Profitable Reselling Business In As Little As 14 Days, I recommend checking out.
Tutor
As a tutor, you can help a nursing student with their nursing degree, pass an examination, and study for a certificate, for example.
To become an online tutor, you can simply create a tutor profile on a tutoring platform, create a listing on Fiverr, reach out to people that you know, and more.

Freelance write
Freelance writing is when you write for different clients, such as a website, magazine, and more.
Many people start with no previous experience, so this can be a great one to begin for you.
Plus, as a freelance writer, you can create your own schedule and take on as many or as few clients as you would like, so you can determine how much money and time you want to spend on this side hustle.
You may be able to become a health writer or write about any of the other thousands of topics out there.
You can learn more in the article How To Become A Freelance Writer.
Mystery shop
Mystery shopping won’t be a huge source of extra income, but it can be something that you can do whenever you have some spare time. There’s not a huge commitment to this either, which can be great if you are looking for something flexible.
Another positive of mystery shopping is that there are mystery shops that can be conducted both in person, online, and on the phone.
As a mystery shopper, you would get paid to evaluate companies from when you walk through the door to after you get your receipt. Or, you may be evaluating how they answer the phone when you pretend that you are a customer inquiring about a service that they offer.
The company has no idea that you are a mystery shopper – this is so that the company can truly evaluate how they are doing and see what they need to improve.
As a mystery shopper, you may be completing mystery shops for clothing stores, department stores, restaurants, car dealerships, salons, amusement parks, and more.
You can learn more at How To Become A Mystery Shopper.
Join a focus group
There are many market research companies that pay people like you and me to share their opinions. Companies then use these opinions and feedback to improve their products and services.
Sometimes focus groups are looking for a specific person too, such as a healthcare professional or someone who uses medical devices. Or, they may be looking for anyone who works in any field.
User Interviews pays very well for market research studies. Over 2,000 studies are launched each month and they have paid over 72,000 participants in the last year.
Pinterest, Spotify, Macy’s, Home Depot, Trip Advisor, and more all use User Interviews to gather feedback from users about their latest products, apps, and websites.
Participants can earn $50 to $100 per hour or more for sharing their opinions and feedback. The average pays over $60.
You can learn more in my User Interviews Review.
Similar to this, there are many paid online surveys you can take as well. These will pay much lower than a focus group, though.
Immunization nurse
An immunization nurse is a nurse who gives vaccines, such as flu shots. You may be working part-time or full-time, such as at a travel vaccine clinic or curbside clinic.
Immunizations will always be around, which means that there will always be a demand for immunization nurses.
Camp nurse
As a camp nurse, you would typically be working in the summer (because that is when camps usually take place). A camp may last a few days or even weeks or months.
You may be taking care of campers, such as doing first aid.
Many camps go without medical professionals because they are unable to find a nurse to fill the role – so there is a demand for camp nurses.
Sign up for extra nursing shifts
This one is the most common as a nurse, so I saved it for almost last. As a nurse, you may have the option to work overtime and make extra money.
Since you are already in the profession, this may be the easiest to get started with.
Travel nurse
Okay, so this is not a side hustle, but I do think it’s somewhat related enough to include in this article!
A travel nurse may be able to earn more than $3,000 per week. They tend to make much more than a nurse who has a permanent job at a hospital or other facility.
Travel nurses are RNs working short-term positions at healthcare facilities. Whenever there are nursing shortages, which happen often in the medical profession, travel nurses help healthcare facilities fill these roles.
I have had several friends become travel nurses, and I’ve also met a few travel nurses while traveling.
Travel nurse jobs usually last around 3 months and can come with many benefits, and they also tend to pay quite well.

This set of four includes Spice Market, a blend of cardamom and clove. From the ginger family, cardamom warms and energizes the senses while bringing a spicy, sweet scent to your home. Do you like chai tea lattes or aromatic spices in your dishes? This blend of essential oils may call to you.

The magic hour, or golden hour, is just before the sun rises or sets. It’s when photographers rush out to capture the magical light available only at these times. The sun’s yellow light takes on a reddish hue, casting everything in a golden, bronze glow that flatters subjects. In autumn and winter, this magic hour becomes more of a magic half-hour, moments you don’t want to miss.
Folkulture’s Magic Hour essential oil set includes white sage, a plant used for thousands of years to purify homes. Balsam, cedarwood and orange bring the season’s scents indoors. Rose plum offers a seductive floral and fruit scent that’s hard to define until experienced.
Diffusing your scents into the air
Now that you’ve chosen your fragrances and essential oils, it’s time to explore some unique scent diffusers that add warmth and intrigue to your apartment. While some are as simple as a candle under a ceramic bowl, others offer a realistic fire-like atmosphere.
Add warmth, humidity and a fire-like flame
Scent diffusers have certainly come a long way. This Flame Aromatherapy Diffuser brings orange-red or blue flame-like lights while it fills your room with a relaxing mist and incredible aroma. Who needs a spa? You can choose from continuous to intermittent misting and make sure it aligns with your decor in faux wood, white or black.
Experience the changing seasons with changing light
This metal ultrasonic cool mist scent diffuser lights up images of the season in seven LED color-changing lights. From trees to forests, owls and deers, experience your unique scents rising from a softly illuminated image. With automatic shut-off and silent operation, it’s also a perfect addition to a room needing a night light.
Quick warning about scent diffusers and pets
While they’re pleasant for humans, scent diffusers and specific essential oils can pose some danger to pets. The devices we listed above use essential oils, which, when dispersed into the air, can become concentrated and overwhelming for animals with highly sensitive noses.
Some essential oils are toxic to pets and can lead to a range of health issues. For example, tea tree oil is off limits to both dogs and cats. Peppermint oil, clove oil, wintergreen oil and cinnamon should be avoided for dog parents; while citrus oils, eucalyptus and ylang-ylang oils shouldn’t be used in cat-friendly homes.
Additionally, pets might accidentally knock over diffusers, leading to spills or direct contact with the oils, which can be harmful if ingested or absorbed through their skin. To ensure the safety of our furry friends, it’s crucial to use scent diffusers cautiously and choose pet-friendly alternatives if necessary.
Enjoy the scents of the season with a scent diffuser
Our sense of smell has a profound link to our memories. It’s why the smell of pumpkin pie takes you back to cooking with your mom, or cedar brings you back to Thanksgiving in the mountains. Perhaps it’s time to create new memories by filling your home with one or more of these enchanting aromas.

Welcome to Someone Buy This!, a monthly shopping column featuring the fun, the frivolous, and the practical from a very discerning shopper.
I love my dog Archie, I love having nice stuff in my home, and yet these two things are often at odds with each other. Dog stuff can often be… well, ugly. There’s a lot of garish prints and colors, and not the kind you’re used to seeing in this column. I’ve searched high and low for functional dog products that seamlessly fit into my home decor and I’m happy to report that they exist. Here are my favorite, Archie-approved, dog accessories.
Eating and drinking
If your dog is like mine, they like splash water all over the floor when they drink. Then you get the very special honor of stepping on wet floor as you go about your business. I’m sure that you, like me, absolutely love a surprise puddle. If so, this product is not for you because it will drastically reduce and even eliminate drink bowl puddles. This base from Dorai Home is made out of diatomaceous earth, which, according to the company, holds up to 150% of its weight in water. What does this mean? It’s super absorbent and causes moisture to evaporate very, very quickly. It truly changed the puddle situation in my kitchen. When Archie dramatically laps from his bowl, this pad grabs the excess.
If you’re excited about air-tight food, you’ll love this treat container. It comes in several colors, holds about 4.5 cups of treats, and is way nicer to look at than the bags dog treats are sold in. Just make sure everyone in your household is aware of its contents. The container is so nice it may be confused as something that holds treats for people!
Dog beds are probably the most visible pet product in your home. Beds need to serve your dog’s needs, be easy to wash, and, of course, not be an eyesore. I personally tend to gravitate towards beds with removable covers. I find that they’re easier to wash, meaning I wash them more often. I love this one by Approved By Fritz, which comes in a few colors and patterns, two of which are checker-print. You can’t go wrong with that! This bed has one seam, giving it more of a pillow shape.
If your dog prefers something boxy, which makes the edges of the bed a bit more stable, Fable has a great option. This bed comes in multiple sizes and both the cover and insert are machine-washable.
Crates seem to be a divisive topic amongst dog people. Some people swear by them and others can’t get past the fact that they look like cages. Archie loves his crate and hangs out in it willingly. He has a habit of dramatically leaving the living room and heading to his crate when he’s decided his night is over. I love that he has his own space, but I hate the way the crate looks. That’s where the Fable crate comes in. It’s easily the most visually appealing crate on the market. In some settings, it can even operate as a side table or nightstand. And yes, the aforementioned bed fits perfectly in the crate!
Bath time
Readers of this column know I’m a big fan of Dedcool scents. Their pet shampoo is no exception. It’s fragrant, but not oppressive, and gentle enough for Archie’s somewhat sensitive skin. I apply the K-beauty double cleanse technique to bath time and use a rubber brush to lather up the shampoo. I can’t say Archie enjoys it, but he accepts his fate and will do basically anything for a treat.
Dog hair is everywhere
I try to de-shed Archie as much as I can during bath time, but turn to a lint roller for the hair that will inevitably end up on my clothes. Staff’s beautiful reusable lint roller, complete with a metallic case, is the one I keep by the door for a last pass on my way out.
I am guilty of cuddling up with my dog on the couch. While I don’t regret letting him up on the furniture, I do have to wage a constant battle on dog hair. Blankets are key here, since they’re way easier to wash than couch cushions. The problem is so many “dog friendly” blankets are ugly! I don’t want them to be monogrammed or decorated with paw prints! This wool blanket from Tartan Blanket Co is washable (yes, really!) and will blend into your existing decor. Wool is naturally stain-resistant, but not the easiest thing to wash. With this blanket, you get it all! These blankets are an extra tight weave, which is okay to throw in the washing machine if you need to.

Banish the “Big Light” Completely With Some Snazzy Lamps
When you purchased your first home, it likely checked off all the boxes. But over time, perhaps your lifestyle has changed and your family has grown, and now you’ve started asking yourself, “Should I buy a bigger house?” Whether you’re looking for larger bedrooms, expanded family space or more storage solutions, buying a bigger home — or even just moving to a different layout or location — might be a change you’re ready to make.
Scott Bridges, Senior Managing Director of Consumer Direct Lending at Pennymac, says that upsizing happens frequently. He explains that a “healthy percentage of buyers are looking to buy up for space, neighborhood, school district and work proximity reasons. It’s a great pursuit and one of the more exciting chapters in one’s homeownership journey.”
Here’s how to figure out if you’ve outgrown your current home and how to determine how big a house you actually need.
The Signs You’ve Outgrown Your Home
While starting a new chapter in a bigger home may sound appealing, moving is a big decision that can come with a hefty price tag. How do you know if you’ve really outgrown your house? Bridges says the following are some of the most important items to consider.
Physical Aspects
One of the first things you’ll want to assess is the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have versus the number you need. Bridges notes, “If your family is growing, if you have kids or parents moving in, you will need additional space for the new members of the household.”
Evolving household dynamics can also change your idea of an optimal home layout. If you currently have a one-story home, do you want to move to a two-story residence or vice versa? Do you want your children’s bedrooms on the same floor as yours? Do you need a separate entrance and living area for mom and dad or grandma and grandpa?
You’ll also want to think about your outdoor space. Bridges recommends asking yourself how much space you’ll need. For example, will you want to entertain, maybe have a pool, how much yard would you like to manage? All things to consider when looking to buy a bigger house.
Future Plans
Even if you’re comfortable in your home right now, do you foresee life events on the horizon that may lead to things getting cramped? Think carefully about your future plans and determine if they align with your current living environment. Consider the following:
Will you be having more children or expanding your family?
How long will your kids be living in the house before they leave for college or work?
Will you need a larger garage or driveway as your children get their driver’s licenses?
Do you envision an elderly parent moving in with you at some point?
Your answers to these questions will help you decide if moving to a bigger home is right for you.
Daily Life
Your home’s physical size may be the primary factor when deciding if you’ve outgrown it, but there are other lifestyle factors to consider as well. For example, do you have a short or a long commute from your current home? Bridges points out, “Most people don’t want to add significant time to their commute, even if it is for a larger home.” Others, however, may feel a longer commute is an adequate trade-off for increased space.
Or maybe you aren’t commuting as much because you work or attend school from home. Could a dedicated work area in a larger home reduce distractions?
Consider, too, the benefits and drawbacks of your present location. Even if you love your neighborhood, perhaps you want to move to a quiet, traffic-minimal cul-de-sac. Or maybe you’d like to be within walking distance of stores, restaurants or public transportation.
Quality of life is key. If your current home is causing you stress and not providing you the comfort you need, it may be time to upsize. Bridges urges, “Carefully think about how much better your day could potentially be with more space, a bigger kitchen, larger yard and more rooms.”
Considerations for Staying Put
There are many reasons why you may want or need to move to a bigger house. But that increase in square footage will likely increase your expenses and responsibilities. Here are a few reasons why staying put may be a better option for some homeowners.
Difficulty Finding a Home in Your Ideal Location
Depending on your desired location, a larger home in your price range may be difficult to find. If you want to remain in the same neighborhood or school district, you’ll have to decide whether moving away from your preferred area for a bigger space is worth the sacrifice.
Higher Costs Beyond the Mortgage
Even if you can comfortably afford your down payment and monthly mortgage payment, there are other expenses you’ll need to consider when moving to a bigger house. “If you live in an area with colder winters, understand your heating costs will go up,” Bridges says. “In a warmer climate, think Arizona and Texas in the summer, AC costs can run very high electric bills in bigger homes.”
Increased Responsibilities
A larger home requires more interior and exterior upkeep. There’s more to clean, furnish, repair, landscape and maintain, which takes time, money and energy.
Not a Guaranteed Investment
If you’re purchasing a home based on an anticipated greater return on investment, keep in mind that real estate values can be unpredictable. There’s no guarantee that your larger home will increase in value when you’re ready to sell.
Commute
Housing costs are often less the further you move away from city centers, giving you more bang for your real estate buck. But if it takes you longer to get to your job, the added time, hassles and transportation expenses may not be worth it. Bridges notes, “If you’re extending your commute to live in a bigger house in the suburbs, the drive may be just too hard.”
Financial Tips for Buying a Larger Home on a Budget
Moving involves a considerable amount of expense, stress and time. Many people try to avoid it by buying a home that will meet their needs for many years to come. However, it’s also important not to buy a house bigger than what you really need. Maintenance requirements, increased utility bills and expensive mortgage payments can be significant burdens. When purchasing a home, how can you be prepared for a growing family without overstretching your budget? Here are a few tips.
Anticipate Costs
Try your best to forecast the additional costs of a bigger home. “When you buy a larger home, you can easily anticipate your mortgage, taxes and insurance costs increasing, but many people don’t anticipate the additional costs of a larger home,” Bridges explains. “Your utilities will be more expensive, lawn and landscaping and amenities like pools will increase your monthly expenses as well. Lastly, repair costs can be much more expensive on bigger homes. Think of a roof replacement on a 2,000 square foot house versus a 4,000 square foot house.”
Consider Your Income and Employment Stability
While more space may support your plans, Bridges stresses that stability of income and employment must be part of the discussion when considering moving to a larger home. Your household income will need to cover the higher costs of owning a bigger house — now and in the days ahead.
Rent Out Your Original House for Income
It may make sense to sell your current home and use the proceeds for the down payment. But if you don’t have to do that, consider keeping it as a rental. Some homeowners move to a bigger home while renting out their old home, creating what can be a lucrative income stream in the future. Bridges advises, “Depending on how much you owe on your house, sometimes it makes sense to keep the original house and rent it out, as it can represent a good income source in the long run. Over time, real estate tends to appreciate and rents tend to rise, so holding the property as a rental can add to your overall wealth as the years go by.”
What to Look Out for When You’re Ready to Buy a Bigger House
Moving to a larger home is a significant change and takes careful thought. If you’re ready to upsize, think about how your prospective new home could adapt as your needs evolve. Bridges says that during the buying stage, homeowners with growing families often look for the following:
Bedrooms on the same floor
A bigger kitchen, a nursery or a media room
Backyard space for kids and pets
A better school district, which generally speaking, impacts home value stability
Want to start your new home search now? See how much your current home is worth, and then go beyond home affordability calculators to determine how much house you can actually afford.
Are You Ready to Move to a Larger Home?
So, should you move to a bigger home? “Every buyer has to make their own decision, as their circumstances vary,” Bridges says. Moving may be challenging, and selling is a process, but he adds, “At the end of the day, buying a bigger home might be one of the more memorable and enjoyable things you can do in your life, so don’t wait too long, if you can!”
Choosing a home that is the right size for your life today and tomorrow involves balancing both your family needs and your budget. So, you’ve decided it’s time for you and your dog to move. You do your research, choose your preferred neighborhood and take the time to come up with several options for apartments you’d like to see. You set up viewings, find the perfect place and send in an application.
But if you’ll be renting with a dog, did you remember to check for breed restrictions? Some apartment communities have a list of restricted dog breeds — and may exercise restraint when it comes to “aggressive” dog breeds in particular.
If your dog is not accepted in your target apartment community, your application may get rejected even if you have good credit and income to cover the rent.
Before you begin the process of finding a new home — it’s important to understand what breed restrictions are and how they can impact your ability to rent with a dog when facing apartment breed restrictions.
What are apartment breed restrictions?
Breed restrictions are just what they sound like: Certain dog breeds and their mixes are not permitted to live in certain buildings, houses and apartments. That means that even if Fido is a mutt — he may not make the cut, depending on the various dog breeds in his mix.
Breed restrictions came about to protect people from what some consider “dangerous” or aggressive dog breeds — especially pit bulls. In other words, if dogs that are commonly associated with aggression aren’t allowed in, there’s likely less chance of attacks or dog bites within the apartment community.
If you’re unsure of your dog’s breed, get a DNA test done! It is tough to identify a breed or breed mix visually.
Dog breed restrictions by weight or age
Another common factor in breed restrictions is the weight and age of your dog. Because apartments are usually smaller than homes and condos, property managers may not want a large dog on-site. Often, renters are only allowed to have smaller breeds.
Age is another factor because puppies often are hyper and destructive, making landlords wary that they’ll tear up the apartment.
Why do apartments have breed restrictions?
There are three reasons dogs may face restrictions living in an apartment building:
Legislation: Some cities and counties have enacted breed-specific legislation that can ban certain breeds from even entering the city or county limits
Insurance companies: Many insurance companies have blacklists that the buildings or apartments they insure must abide by
Landlord’s choice: Breed restrictions are the decision of the building’s landlord or management company
Commonly restricted dog breeds
Each apartment community will probably maintain its own list of specific breed restrictions, but here’s a look at the most common aggressive dog breeds:
Akitas
Alaskan Malamutes
Bulldogs
Cane Corso
Chows
Doberman Pinschers
German Shepherds
Great Danes
Mastiffs
Pit bulls
Rottweilers
Siberian Huskies
Terriers
Wolf hybrids
Mixes of these breeds may also be restricted in some communities. Check with the property manager or leasing agent if you have any questions.
Are apartment breed restrictions legal?
Many activists, as well as some high-level animal organizations (including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), are completely against breed restrictions for several reasons.
Consider this: Has Fido ever attacked another animal or human or acted aggressively above and beyond what’s normal for dogs? If not, why should he be restricted just because other dogs of the same breed have shown aggression?
Basically, many animal organizations agree that aggressive behavior in a dog is much more about nurture than nature — it all depends on how the animal grows up and how it responds to training. Plus, many believe that breed restrictions simply don’t work to lessen the chances of dog attacks or bites.
Unfortunately, breed restrictions have increased the number of homeless dogs — sometimes, owners simply set the dog loose or bring it to an animal shelter rather than trying to find an apartment that accepts all breeds.
What can I do if my dog is on a list of apartment breed restrictions?
Breed-specific restrictions have been slowly decreasing — great for loving dog owners like you! However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that insurance companies or landlords are going to change their minds.
If Fido is not welcome off the bat, there are a couple of things you still might be able to do to persuade your landlord into giving your beloved fur baby a chance.
1. Request a pet interview
If the breed restrictions are in place by a landlord (not an insurance company), there’s still hope! Ask the landlord if he or she is willing to do a doggie interview during which he or she can meet and interact with Fido.
If the building has an area for dogs to roam, ask if you can hold the interview there. That way, the landlord will be able to see Fido has no aggressive tendencies toward dogs or people. Create some talking points to guide the interview in the right direction.
Talk about your pet being part of the family — especially the role they play as a family member. Discuss your understanding and good track record of keeping your past properties clean and well-maintained, despite your dog(s). Offer additional money on your non-refundable pet deposit.
2. Create dog resumes
Next time you apply for an apartment, come prepared. Put together a pet resume for Fido with pictures, vet records and any other information you have. You can even bring along a video to show the landlord. Who will be able to resist those puppy dog eyes?
Apartment Guide has a simple tool that will let you build a printable pet resume for your animals.
3. Provide references
Your future landlord might not always want to meet your pet right off the bat, especially if they have a fear related to aggressive dog breeds. If this is the case, ask your vet, groomer, pet sitter/boarding facility or friends and family to write letters of reference for your furry friend.
4. Gather vet records
Gather up and provide proof of your pet’s medical records (i.e. vaccinations, Rabies shots, tag registration, etc.)
5. Create a video
Make a video of your pet showing it as a part of your family. If possible, try to include shots of interactions with children, other pets and elderly people. This might build trust between your potential landlord and your pet.
6. Offer to pay pet rent
We’ve all heard the expression that “money talks.” You might be able to offer your landlord a little more security with the promise of extra monthly rent for Fido.
7. Secure renters insurance
Many landlords will want you to have your own kind of Renters’ Insurance regardless of your pets, but in this case, try taking it a step further. Offer to secure a policy that covers your pets and has a liability policy that covers them of $300,000 — listing the landlord as an additional insured member.
Additional animal restrictions
Thinking about becoming the next Tiger King? Great! Just check with your landlord or state first.
Often, pets other than dogs face restrictions, too. Any animal from hedgehogs and ferrets to zebras or certain snakes may not find itself welcome.
Pet owners should take restricted breeds seriously
It might be tempting to lie on your application about your pets, but lying is the worst thing you can do. If a landlord discovers you’ve been dishonest about your pet(s), they can potentially evict you — and living on the street is not an option.

Searching for a new apartment often takes a lot of time and research; in fact, it can be disheartening if you have a hard time finding an apartment you love. And that’s why winter is the best time to rent an apartment. You might be surprised at how easy it is to discover your next apartment, one that you can’t wait to turn into a home.
1. There often is lower demand in the winter
It’s no secret people love to move in the summer. The weather usually is great, the kids are out of school for families looking to relocate and there often is less demand on our time for other activities. In fact, 40 percent of all moves occur in the summer, with just 5% taking place in November and December. As a result, apartment shoppers can find some great apartments for rent, particularly new apartments that may be completed during the season.
2. You could find more options for apartment size, style
In tandem with lower demand, renters may find there is a wider variety of apartment sizes and styles available during the winter than in other seasons. Because demand is lower, it might be easier to find that two-bedroom apartment you wanted instead of having to settle for a one-bedroom unit. This also applies to those new apartments that are completed during the winter. That means you could land a great apartment with new appliances, updated finishes and special spaces such as a sunroom or screened porch.
3. There could be more availability with movers
Because people don’t move as often during the winter, you may be able to book your movers on your timetable instead of having to wait for one to become available. This is important so you can schedule the movers around your commitments and work schedule and don’t have to use valuable personal or vacation days for moving instead. Also, during this slower season, movers may not be as rushed, so might be less likely to damage your items.
4. You could have more time off to move
No one wants to spend their personal or vacation days moving instead of on a much-needed vacation. When moving in the winter, particularly around the holidays, you likely could have extra days off that won’t interfere with your PTO or vacation days. Although no one wants to spend their holidays moving, it could prove beneficial if you don’t have to take off extra time at work.
5. You could snag an apartment when a fall graduate vacates
Looking for an apartment near a college campus could be especially challenging because many, if not most, apartments are already booked from September through May. However, if you are moving to a college town during the winter, particularly in December or January, you could score an apartment when a fall graduate prepares to move out. After all, no landlord wants an apartment to sit empty until the new students arrive in August or September.
6. You could save money
While you may not be looking for a less expensive apartment, you could still score one during the winter. No landlord wants a vacant apartment, so it’s not uncommon for them to run rent specials during the winter when demand is low. This could range from waiving the security deposit to offering a free month of rent to reducing rent for the entire term of the rental agreement.
7. It’s a good time to negotiate preferred rental terms
Because landlords want to rent empty apartments during the winter, the tenant is in a good position to negotiate the rental agreement terms. This could include asking for a shorter- or longer-term lease, waiving fees such as those for pets or upgrading the appliances in the unit. If there’s something you want, now is the time to ask. The worst that could happen is the landlord says no.
Yes, winter is the best time to rent an apartment
As you can see, renting an apartment during the winter could provide many benefits, so don’t hesitate to start looking for a new apartment when the weather turns cold. You could end up scoring a hot deal on your next home.

Listen to music while you house sit or pet sit

House sitters are paid to take care of someone’s home while they are away. You may need to water plants, take mail in, do some light cleaning, take care of pets, and so on.
You have a lot of downtime as a house sitter, and you can spend that time listening to music. House sitters make anywhere from $25 to $50 per day.
Pet sitters make anywhere from $25 to over $100 per day. I have personally paid $100 per night for a pet sitter to watch our dogs in her home.
If you are looking for a platform to begin with, I recommend listing your pet sitting services on Rover.

A balcony is one of the most challenging and underutilized areas of a rental home or apartment. These spaces, enjoyed in versatile ways ranging from morning cups of coffee to outdoor meditation sessions, have tricky sizing and spacing. Fortunately, we’ve gotten expert insight for some refreshing small balcony ideas that we can bet you haven’t heard before.
Despite the size of your balcony, even if it’s on the cozy side, there are hacks to make these outdoor havens feel larger, elevated and inviting. By implementing clever design ideas and thoughtful decor choices, you can transform your balcony into a delightful extension of your living space.
8 pointers for petite balconies
While most decor choices feel in our control, smaller balconies feel limiting and more difficult to design. However, with a dash of creativity and these tips, you’ll unlock the true potential of your outdoor oasis so you can better use it to relax, entertain or dine outdoors whenever weather allows.
1. Choose space-saving furniture
Foldable and stackable furniture is your friend. Furnishings like bistro sets and compact tables and chairs are designed with small spaces in mind, meaning they’ll take up less room than traditional furniture.
2. Add vertical greenery
Vertical garden solutions brighten up spaces of any size while assisting the space in feeling taller. Hanging potted plants, installing wall-mounted planters, investing in a stacked planter or finding a vertical garden kit are all innovative ways to exercise your green thumb and enrich your smaller balcony.
3. Choose accent flooring
Small rugs, floor mats and even turf installs are creative ways to decorate your small balcony. Weatherproof rugs and floormats can help create sections of your balcony, resulting in a more inviting atmosphere and the illusion that the space is larger than it is.
Turf is a newer, unique way to add functionality to your balcony. Whether you have pets that love to lounge on your balcony or simply want to create a cozy, outdoor vibe, turf is the way to go. With no real upkeep (other than potential pet messes), turf is sure to elevate the vibe of your small balcony while helping visitors connect with nature.
4. Use bright colors and patterns
Creating visual intrigue and integrating your personal style into a space distracts visitors from its size. Colored furnishings and patterned decor pillows are simple ways to incorporate pops of color and personal style to make your balcony really feel like it’s an extension of your home.
5. Create a cozy corner
Maybe it’s counterintuitive, but sometimes the easiest way to make a room, like your balcony, feel larger is to make it feel cozier. When you spend more time in a space, you’re able to get a better feel for the layout therefore understanding how to utilize every square inch. Creating a cozy corner on your balcony makes the space feel inviting, shifting the feel from “small” to intimate.
Crafting a cozy corner is as easy as adding plush furniture, cozy blankets and soft pillows. To take your cozy corner to the next level, incorporate some aromatherapy, speakers and an outdoor heater or fan.
6. Incorporate lighting
Lighting is powerful when looking for ways to elevate and make your smaller balcony feel luxurious. Think string lights, lanterns and LED candles placed carefully to bring warmth and comfort to your outdoor haven.
7. Utilize railings
Source: Amazon
The railing on a balcony is an underutilized space, especially when it comes to decorating small balconies. This is a great spot to add barstool seating and a balcony bar, which creates an entertaining space where it’s lacking. Not to mention, it creates a serene spot to sip your morning coffee and watch the sunrise.
8. Decorate with mirrors and wall decor
Mirrors and wall decor are typically hacks used indoors to make a space feel larger. However, this trick can be utilized outside as well to make a small balcony feel more personalized and larger in size.
When strategically placed, mirrors reflect natural light and the surrounding scenery, creating the illusion of a more expansive outdoor area. Similarly, carefully chosen wall decor adds character to your balcony and draws the eye, diverting attention from its limited dimensions.
Beautify your balcony, despite its small size
A balcony is considered a luxury amenity by most, offering a serene outdoor extension of your home. Between the decorating and potential entertaining opportunities, it’s tricky determining how to make the most of your petite patio so that it blends functionality and beauty. With these hacks, your small balcony will transform from a compact space to a cozy oasis. Take a look at our available apartments for rent here to find your perfect spot with a balcony.
