The difference between thrift stores and consignment shops

Consignment and antique shops are great, but they tend to be pricier because their collections are curated. These stores do all the hunting down and fixing up for you, and that service is offset via higher price tags. While consignment shops are more likely to have highly sought after antiques from pedigreed brands, you can still certainly find hidden gems at nearly any thrift store — you just may have to put in more effort to find what you’re looking for. Balance the odds of what you want being there with the price range you’re willing to pay when deciding where to shop.

Getting what you need while giving back to the community

Many of your favorite causes run thrift shops to help fund their programs and services. Prime Thrift near Fair Park benefits American Veterans (AMVETS), Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and other local and national charitable organizations, while Out of the Closet in Oak Lawn benefits the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Genesis Women’s Shelter, a nonprofit that provides safety, shelter and support for women and children who have experienced domestic violence, operates two thrift stores: one in Oak Lawn and another in South Oak Cliff. There are four Soul’s Harbor locations throughout the metroplex, with proceeds going toward its programs to help men break the cycle of homelessness and addiction. Some of these shops even have exclusive relationships with estate liquidators, increasing your chances of finding treasures among their wares.

If you’re looking for a bit more than just decor, check out your local ReStore, which benefits Habitat for Humanity. There, you can find actual building materials, such as tile, cabinets, wood flooring, windows, doors or even vintage brick. In addition to these, they also have plenty of new and vintage home furnishings, large appliances and more. With 10 locations across D-FW, it’s a convenient alternative to big-box stores when shopping for your next home design project.

Choose your shopping days wisely

For donation-based thrift stores, Mondays and Tuesdays are typically the best days to shop, because most people tend to drop off items early in the week after spending the weekend cleaning. Signing up for emails is a great way to stay on top of the latest finds and deals, but there’s just no substitute for going in regularly. It works the same with searching online, whether it’s eBay, Craigslist, or Facebook Marketplace. “I’m a huge fan of Facebook Marketplace” says Whitney Marsh, an interior designer and business owner who furnished her Oak Cliff coffee shop, B-Side, with thrifted finds. “I also really love Souls Harbor in Waxahachie,” Marsh notes.

Have a strategy before you start shopping

There are two ways to go about hunting vintage pieces. Either have a piece or project in mind and know what you want to pay for it, or be able to spot a good deal. This can involve researching brands, pieces, and eras to be able to find your ideal mix of quality pieces that aren’t in demand. Marsh says that’s her strategy. “I know what I like, and I also know what brands are known for quality goods,” she explains. “I definitely have a style. I’m drawn toward leather furniture, solid wood, wool rugs and unique art.”

Marsh created this seating area using chairs thrifted from Soul’s Harbor and a unique brass ship she found through Facebook marketplace.(Whitney Marsh)

For example, you may love midcentury modern (MCM) pieces, but the popularity of decor from that era means there’s more demand, and unscrupulous sellers may assign that label to random items in order to get them to sell. You may find more success by researching some favorite brands or designers from the MCM era and looking for those specifically to avoid fake listings and inflated prices. Be aware that people will list items online with a famous brand name keyword to get more hits, such as saying a “Pottery Barn-style” rug or “MCM-style lamp.” If you’re shopping in person, don’t be afraid to ask the store’s staff about an item you’re looking for; they may have something similar that just hasn’t been put out yet. Or, they might be willing to take down your name and keep an eye out for items on your list — especially if you’re a regular customer.

Simple design rules to consider

In this area Marsh designed for a client, she paired a thrifted console with a modern lamp and abstract art to create balance.(Whitney Marsh)

Once you’ve found that unique piece you’ve been searching for, how do you style it? Thrifted pieces bring character into a space, but it is possible to have too much of a good thing, says Marsh. “I like to pair thrifted pieces with more high-end textiles. I love an old leather sofa that’s worn in against a very bold luxury wallpaper.” If you buy a well-worn piece and want to play up that lived-in aesthetic, try to surround it with items that are clean and modern. Too much rusticity can end up looking like neglect. Same goes for smaller items, such as pots, frames or books — space them out in designed vignettes throughout your home instead of clustering them all together. Also, keep in mind that pairing thrifted furniture is easier when they share some similar elements. For example, mismatched nightstands look more cohesive if they are roughly the same size and color.

Thrifting can be a way to save big, depending on when and where you shop, and what you’re looking for. “I definitely shop with a specific corner or space in mind. I also really only pull the trigger on things that seem like they’re good quality and the right price,” says Marsh. But if you’re patient, persistent and know what you want and what you’re willing to pay for it, it’s just a matter of time before you find it.

Apache is functioning normally

The disco ball, while always beautiful, has undergone a glow-up in the 21st century. No longer relegated to the nightlife scene that birthed it, the mirrorball crept into our weddings, our homes, our earlobes. Then it escaped its spherical form entirely—now martini glasses, cowgirl boots, even mushrooms gleam with silver-tiled radiance. What could they possibly disco next?

Sofie Berarducci has some ideas.

The 24-year-old entrepreneur honed her design savvy building furniture in her parents’ garage during the pandemic. When she returned to college in San Francisco, she had to settle for smaller projects. One night, while watching The Bachelor, she and a handful of friends covered a Styrofoam mushroom from Michaels in shiny, mirrored tiles. “Anytime someone would come over and see it in my room, they’d love it,” Berarducci recalls. “It was such a showstopper.”

After graduating in 2019, Berarducci started crafting more disco mushrooms as Christmas presents. She posted surplus ’shrooms on Facebook Marketplace, where they sold out overnight. “People were messaging me, ‘Where can I buy more?’” Berarducci recalls.

Berarducci capitalized on the disco fever with an Etsy shop and, eventually, a business account on Instagram. She developed new products, pivoting from Styrofoam bases to 3D-printed fruit, liquor bottles, and other fun shapes. Berarducci was still working full-time at a San Diego marketing agency, running her side hustle with help from family. “In the morning, my mom and I would pack orders together, go drop them off at UPS, and go do our nine-to-five,” she says. “Five would hit, and we would turn on a movie and get to tiling.”

Six months in, she decided to launch the brand’s e-commerce site and quit her job to focus on Sofiest Designs. “It was kind of a huge risk,” she adds, “but I haven’t looked back.” After all, the gamble paid off handsomely: In addition to 80,000 Instagram followers, Sofiest Designs boasts partnerships with Urban Outfitters, Free People, Dormify, and Aerie. Berarducci has designed custom disco doodads for celebs such as Lizzo, Kourtney Kardashian, and Shania Twain, and outlets like Architectural Digest, HGTV, Apartment Therapy, and Time have taken notice.

Though her company ships out 15 to 20 orders per day, Berarducci continues to hand-make each product in a San Marcos warehouse with the help of a small team of family and friends. “My business is part e-commerce manufacturer and part art,” she explains. “It’s still really time intensive. I’m touching every single [piece].”

All those hours tiling haven’t stopped her from pushing Sofiest Designs forward. She added additional, less shiny homewares in the form of surreal shelving and pastel lamps and partnered with other woman-owned small businesses to expand the company’s e-commerce offerings. You can shop seven other makers’ products on Berarducci’s site.

Nevertheless, what Berarducci calls “disco therapy” remains core to her company’s ethos. “The disco ball is timeless and gorgeous, but it hadn’t been remodeled in, like, 50 years,” she says. “We wanted to make something more appropriate for Gen Z. Our goal is to make disco items that double as art for your home that you can have forever.”

We tapped Berarducci to share some of her favorite home décor products from small businesses (including her own). Here are 10 fun finds to spruce up your bedroom, bar cart, or coffee table.

Big Night

This cheeky clock is “so cute for your kitchen area—I love the pop of red,” Berarducci says. “The martini at the five o’clock hand is the perfect little detail.” The timepiece captures two trends: the fervor for food-centric décor and, of course, Gen Z’s love for disco-inspired details.

Glass Tile Decorative Tray, $65

Subtle Art Studio

“This tray makes for the most stunning accent piece on your vanity or bar cart,” Berarducci says. “It’s an easy way to elevate your space.” San Jose–based Subtle Art Studio slings several products made with retro-inspired glass tiles, including coasters, incense holders, and photo stands.

Olive Candle, $21

Nata Concept Store

“Why not add an olive candle to your home décor?” Berarducci suggests. “Style with your martini glasses and mixers on a bar cart. So cute!” Novelty candles have made a splash as a playful, affordable way to accessorize your house, and this one stands out for its lovely floral scent.

Checkered Ceramic Vase, $120

Alicja Ceramics

Another of Berarducci’s small business partners, Alicja Ceramics crafts and paints each of her funky vases by hand. “These are my go-to for all my flower arrangements,” Berarducci adds. “The checkered print against the florals makes for the coolest contrast.”

Disco Strawberry, $52.50

Sofiest Designs

TikTok’s beloved “unexpected red” theory holds that introducing a touch of crimson will enliven any room. Try out the technique with Berarducci’s sparkly strawberry. “My favorite way to show off this strawberry is to style it on a kitchen shelf or use it as a dining-table centerpiece,” she says.

New York embroidery shop Abbode is all about customization. This pillow case takes things a step beyond monogramming, allowing customers to select and request symbols that represent their most formative experiences or favorite things. “These make for the perfect customized housewarming gift—for your friend or for yourself,” Berarducci says.

Buns Out, $40

Piecework Puzzles

“Boring puzzles are out,” Bararducci declares. “Challenge your brain and create a masterpiece with Piecework’s ‘Buns Out’ puzzle.” After you’ve put the final piece in place, brush Mod Podge over the lot and frame it as a conversation-starting work of art.

Custom Neon Sign, from $159

Yellowpop

Whatever your catchphrase is, immortalize it in neon lights. Yellowpop offers one-of-a-kind LED signs with 14 different color options. “This is a great way to personalize your space in a unique and timeless way,” Berarducci says. “I created a custom ‘Sofiest Designs’ sign for my warehouse and absolutely love it!”

Coutesy of Sofiest Designs

Wobble Table Lamp, $120

Sofiest Designs

This wiggly lamp from Sofiest Designs comes in four easy-to-style colors: powder pink, muted orange, soft green, and creamsicle orange. You can select a lampshade in one of those same hues to mix and match. “This is my favorite of our lamps,” Berarducci says. “It looks good in any space and any colorway.”

Courtesy of Coming Soon

Concrete Shelf, $650

Concrete Cat

This eye-catching shelf is an art piece in itself. “The concrete coloring brings [it] to the next level,” Berarducci adds. A groove at the back of the shelf helps secure thin items like records, photos, and (SDM’s personal favorite) magazines for display.

Call it the Yellowstone effect, but ranch living is definitely having a moment.

In recent years, countless homebuyers seeking a blend of luxury, privacy, and a closer connection to nature have opted for rural properties that offer more bang for your buck — and a tranquil lifestyle that promises less fuss and more rewards.

This trend has not gone unnoticed in the celebrity world, with notable figures like Donald Glover, Kelis, and even Calvin Harris (who ventured as far as Ibiza to secure a 183-acre farm) embracing the ranch lifestyle.

And now, there’s a new option on the market for prospective buyers seeking to own a piece of rural California.

The Green Acre Ranch — a nearly 20-acre property in Somis, California with mini-horse stables and over 1,500 income-producing fruit trees — has just been listed for $7.35 million, presenting a unique blend of luxury ranch living and lucrative agricultural potential.

Rochelle Maize and Myra Nourmand of Nourmand & Associates hold the listing, and they’ve given us all the deets on this unique opportunity.

An income-producing ranch

Located conveniently an hour’s drive from Los Angeles and a stone’s throw from the charming towns of Camarillo and Moorpark, the Green Acre Ranch offers a perfect retreat for those wanting proximity to the city while enjoying the tranquility of the countryside.

The property spans 20 acres and is adorned with 1,500 matured avocado, pomegranate, and lemon trees, which have historically turned a profit, generating $72k and $84.5k in revenue in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

The estate boasts an array of features designed to cater to the luxury-minded homeowner with a penchant for outdoor living.

From a long gated driveway lined with roses to a swimming pool and a large pond that mirror the property’s serene setting, each detail has been curated to enhance the ranch’s natural beauty and its panoramic views of the valley.

The sprawling property has a charming, Mediterranean-style home that allows guests and residents to soak in the picturesque canyon views from nearly every room of the house.

“The estate is set away from the street, which gives the homeowner ultimate privacy,” listing agent Myra Nourmand tells us.

Inside the 5-bedroom home

Featuring 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, an inviting eat-in kitchen, and a showstopping Spanish-tiled staircase, the interiors draw you in as much as the idyllic surroundings.

Built in 2008, the house features tile, wood, and stone flooring with two fireplaces adding to the coziness of the home. And the rooms are as grand and impressive as the rest of the property.

The heart of the home

The great room stands out as the property’s crown jewel, providing breathtaking views of the expansive yard and the canyon beyond.

As Myra Nourmand highlights, the ranch offers vistas on par with those found in Italy, creating a scenic backdrop that could rival scenes from “The Sound of Music.”

“The Green Acre Ranch’s views are truly magnificent,” agent Myra Nourmand tells us. “I’ve traveled extensively across Europe and can say that this property is on par with the views found in Italy. As you walk through the property’s French doors, it’s like you’re in “The Sound of Music” with these stunning views of the hills and canyon.”

A rich historical tapestry

The Green Acre Ranch carries a storied past with Hollywood connections, having been a preferred gathering spot for musicians at the behest of previous owner Mary Hollander.

Photo credit: Jeff Elson / Nourmand & Associates

Mary Hollander directed and produced for the Sagamore Players, a local theater troupe, often staging shows in her home. Her husband, Max Hollander, was a violinist in the early 1940s and he was an associate concertmaster for the NBC Symphony Orchestra led by Toscanini.

According to our sources, Hollander used to have parties at the property where all these Hollywood musicians would come up on the first Sunday of the month. The ranch’s Hollywood legacy, coupled with its robust agricultural potential, makes it a property with both charm and investment value.

It has an orchard with 1,500 fruit trees

Rochelle Maize emphasizes the ranch’s vast outdoor amenities, including an 11-stall horse stable, a luxurious BBQ pavilion, and the possibility to add more facilities such as sports courts or additional animal shelters.

Photo credit: Jeff Elson / Nourmand & Associates

The property also boasts an orchard of 1,500 fruit trees, including avocado, orange, lemon, guava, grapefruit,  pomegranate, and more, offering a trove of California produce just moments away. With this much land, prospective buyers can cultivate a vineyard, build sports facilities like a pickleball court, or construct more animal shelters and barns for pigs, ducks, or goats. All animals are welcome!

The property’s orchard not only enhances its appeal but also offers a sustainable living option by allowing homeowners to cultivate a variety of fruits.

Stables for mini-horses

Photo credit: Jeff Elson / Nourmand & Associates

Possibly the most charming amenity is reserved for the equestrian enthusiast, as the property can easily be turned into a miniature horse farm.

An 11-stall miniature horse stable stands ready to accommodate small equine companions, with the flexibility to convert for full-size horses.

There’s even a private pond

In line with the whole “trading the city life for quiet ranch living”, this particular luxury listing comes with both the traditional pool AND a cute little pond.

Photo credit: Jeff Elson / Nourmand & Associates

The tranquil private pond adds a touch of whimsy to the landscape, offering a serene backdrop for entertainment and relaxation.

Located in Somis, California

Photo credit: Jeff Elson / Nourmand & Associates

Somis is conveniently located just an hour’s drive from Los Angeles, making it ideal for someone who seeks a quiet and relaxing retreat but still wants to be close to city life,” listing agent Rochelle Maize says in an exclusive quote for Fancy Pants Homes.

“Situated amidst the charming towns of Camarillo and Moorpark each just a short 15–20-minute drive away, residents and visitors alike can enjoy outlet malls, scenic hiking trails, and country club golf courses. The town of Somis itself is ripe with neighboring farms and nurseries that provide fresh local fruits, vibrant flowers, and delicious nuts, adding to the area’s idyllic rural charm.”

A multifaceted opportunity

Photo credit: Jeff Elson / Nourmand & Associates

Beyond its enchanting living spaces and outdoor amenities, the ranch serves as a fully functional farm.

The previous owner leveraged the orchard’s produce to create a line of kitchen and bath products, from gourmet balsamic vinegar, including fig and pomegranate flavors, to avocado soaps, body scrubs, and body lotions, showcasing the estate’s versatility and entrepreneurial potential.

The Green Acre Ranch is more than just a home; it’s a lifestyle choice for those seeking privacy, luxury, and the opportunity to live off the land, all within reach of Los Angeles.

As the trend towards ranch living grows among celebrities and luxury homebuyers alike, this listing represents a rare chance to own a piece of California’s coveted rural lifestyle.

Reddit Basics

Before getting completely lost in Reddit, here are some important things you need to know.

For me, I quit using Reddit because I got overwhelmed and couldn’t find what I needed quickly enough. Thus, here is the lingo that will help you succeed.

  • Subreddit: A popular place to find information is on the subreddit; for example: “r/personalfinance”.
  • Upvote / Downvote: Users can upvote or downvote a comment. Reddit gives the comment a “score,” which is the number of upvotes minus the number of downvotes.
  • Karma: Other users can upvote or downvote your posts and comments; these tally to your “karma.” When providing helpful comments and posts, then they will reflect a higher karma score.
  • OP: Original Poster.
  • AMA: Ask Me Anything. An online Q&A session hosted by Reddit’s community in which some guest (normally famous) is or are available for questions
  • EDIT and ETA: Edit and Edited. A simple way for a user to denote the added to their original comment.
  • TL;DR: Too Long; Didn’t Read. This is added at the end of long text posts or comments to quickly summarize an article or comment as being too long to read. Sometimes, people use it to summarize the main point in case you don’t want to read the entire thing.

Avoid #1 – Posting Personal Information

The best practice is to avoid posting personal information. As such, your information may be used against you. Reddit is a social media website with different spheres of interest.

You’ve been familiar with a checkerboard, right? The classic game that you played as a kid. Well, this nostalgic design is also top on the home décor front in 2024. And for good reason. Striking and stylish, the large black and white checks give any home an uplifted, refined feel.

While Kris Jenner showcased the sleek trend in her Instagram post. Here’s why how you can use it in your space..

Hindustan Times – your fastest source for breaking news! Read now.

Any room, any space
One of the biggest advantages is that you can have checkerboard floors in the hall or living room, kitchen, bathroom or just in a corridor area that connects spaces. It exudes an airy, bright ambience.

The design revs up any space from the living area to the bathroom (Shutterstock)

The interiors trend also works two ways – it offers a timeless appeal when paired with retro elements like old clocks, armchairs and vintage furniture and gives out a contemporary look when juxtaposed with new-age pieces, plants and vibrant walls. To understand things better, chunky, large squares define the traditional checkerboard style, but one may also go with smaller checks depending on the room space.

Not just for floors
You can have a checkerboard pattern on anything from cushions and rugs to wall corners or just do a small tile strip to frame the rest of the flooring in the room, if you don’t want to go overboard with it. While the traditional theme is to use black and white you can also go in for deep maroon or green and white.

Restaurants love it
The checkerboard tiling trend is also extremely popular in restaurant spaces.

There are several reasons for this, namely, it offers a classic-meets-lively appeal and adapts to other décor arrangements with ease , offering a fresh and nuanced perspective on this timeless interior design.

I might get a little sentimental today. This is the 20th anniversary of my — well, really our — weekly column. In addition to feeling old, I also feel grateful.

It was actually slightly more than 20 years ago that I was living in Southern California, working as a freelance writer, when an editor from the Orange County Register called. The paper was launching a monthly regional magazine targeting owners of luxury homes — think Laguna and Newport Beach — and he wanted a column that would be the antidote to potentially pretentious content.

“So,” I said, “you want a column that is not about rich homeowners and their chichi architects and their museum-quality art collections and the exquisite homes they build on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific and how the whole experience was one giant lovefest, and they had money left over?”

“Right,” he confirmed, “a reality column.”

He’d found the right writer. At that point, I had built two homes from the ground up, had the debt and cortisol levels to prove it, and had an arsenal of frustrations.

Still disbelieving, I added, “You want me to write about the tile mason with the drinking problem, the neighbors who won’t speak to you because you’ve had an outhouse and a Dumpster parked in your front yard for three months, the dogs who got so fed up with the construction they ran away in search of a rescue, and about how the remodel took three times as long, cost three times as much, and you weren’t speaking to your spouse at the end?”

“Exactly,” he said. “Sprinkle in some advice. Be the girl next door who has the same problems as everyone else but is two steps ahead, because you’ve made the mistakes and know who to call.”

Eighteen months later, my then-husband and I moved from Southern California to Colorado — just one of my many moves. And soon, I had a syndicated column. That former editor congratulated me, then ominously added: “It’s great to have a weekly column, but one day, you are going to run out of ideas.”

Until then, a dry well hadn’t been on my worry list. I flashed back to when I was in kindergarten and got in trouble for talking too much in class. I wound up in the principal’s office with my mother to discuss “the problem.” When the principal asked why I talked so much, the answer was easy. “I just have so many important things to say,” I said, which was unintentionally hilarious.

So here we are 20 years and 1,040 columns later, and I still have things to say and no shortage of topics. Because I have never been able to see where home design stops and home life begins, my columns are about both. Here’s a brief look back at some of the moments we’ve been through together:

The calamities: You were there when my two custom seven-foot sofas arrived with the upholstery fabric inside out, when the back patio in our new Colorado home fell three feet into a sink hole, and when our rescue dog on his first night with us tested our commitment on the one-day-old living room carpet. (Who gets a new dog and new carpet on the same day?)

The many moves: You were there through 10 houses and nine moves, including the move to Florida, where I had a stint as a live-in home stager and moved six times in four years.

The life changes: You were there when I sent each of my children off to college, entering some sort of self-imposed dorm-decorating contest in which I was the sole contestant. You were there through my divorce and remarriage, the loss of two parents and the gain of three grown stepchildren.

The micro and macro: Together, we’ve covered the minor (how to choose drawer knobs and tea towels) and the major (the meaning of home and belonging and how to leave a meaningful legacy.

A new year brings a fresh start. Maybe in 2024 you’re trying to refresh your skincare routine or resolving to read more. But as you work on yourself, don’t forget to give your home some TLC.

This year is bringing unique and luxurious styles to the forefront of home décor. There’s an abundance of home trends to embrace—from textured fabric to textured walls, dainty bows to soft round edges, and even glamorously ornate stylings.

While you don’t need to abandon your style, let these trends serve as inspiration for ways to refresh your space. Here are the top 10 home décor trends of 2024.

1. Bouclé fabric

As if we needed yet another reason to adore Drew Barrymore’s Beautiful collection.

Move over velvet—bouclé is the latest fabric everyone wants. Made of looped wool or synthetic fibers, bouclé is a textured fabric often coming in soft pastel and neutral colorways. Nick Drewe, a trend expert at Wethrift, spotted bouclés rise in popularity, especially on TikTok; the hashtag #bouclechair has over 62.4 million views on the social media site.

To join in on this interior design trend, go for this chic, yet affordable chair from Drew Barrymore’s line at Walmart, which has a rotating base and comes in an darling shade of sage or a sleek white.

2. Bows

There’s no limit to what season bows can be used in.

Yes, maybe you just put away bows for the holiday season, but they’re not going anywhere. Bows are everywhere—from clothes to hair, and now your home.

These dainty ties add a feminine flair to your home design. Bows is one of the most versatile design trends of 2024. They can go anywhere, like your table with delicate taper candles from Meri Meri, and even your bathroom with this sweet shower curtain by McGee and Co.

You’re sure to see a surge in ‘coquette’ home décor this year.

3. Peach tones

Pantone’s “Peach Fuzz” should absolutely be on your mood board this year.

The Pantone Color of the Year is Peach Fuzz, a cheery color ready to brighten up your home’s color palette. It’s a vibrant pastel that works wonderfully as a decorative pop of color.

Ruggable, which makes our favorite washable rugs, has an exclusive line featuring Pantone Peach Fuzz. We love this tufted rug that features a playful geometric print. Or, you can go all out with a peachy accent wall using Spoonflower wallpaper.

4. Cozy neutral colorscapes

Try adding deeper earth tones to achieve a moodier vibe around your home.

Brown is the new go-to shade of neutral. While black, navy, and gray usually get all the attention when it comes to neutrals, 2024 is the year of brown. Not only is it a perfect compliment to the vibrancy of peach, but it’s a gorgeous way to add depth and warmth.

Bedding is an easy way to incorporate brown into your home. Refresh your bedroom with a set of cozy linen sheets in a deep cocoa color like these from BedThreads. Or, try brown curtains for a moody display. These curtains from CB2 are a rich brown that will make your home feel luxurious.

5. Curved furniture

Make waves with curvy furniture that is both unconventional and distinctive.

This year, rather than going for sharp, angular pieces of mid-century modern furniture, try rounded curves. This softer approach, especially through furniture, can make a statement.

Have fun with a new coffee table that swaps hard edges for smooth curves. This cloud-like coffee table is unique and cultivates a dreamy living room vibe.

Or if you’re in the mood for a new couch, try this low-profile curved sectional from West Elm.

6. Furniture made out of cardboard

Credit:
Reviewed / 2modern / Yona Furniture

In 2024, we’re using less wood and more cardboard.

Sustainability continues to be an important pillar of this year’s home design forecast, with cardboard furniture trending as one of the greenest ways to furnish your home.

You’d never think that cardboard could be sturdy enough to hold your mattress, but it is! Cardboard is one of the most sustainable fibers as it’s made from recycled materials rather than newly harvested ones—and it can be surprisingly sophisticated.

Cardboard furniture may be rising in popularity, but it’s been around for almost 50 years. The Wiggle Stool by Frank Gehry is crafted from perforated cardboard and makes a contemporary and stylish seat.

Yona makes cardboard bed frames that are supremely sturdy, holding over 7,000 pounds. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money but want the cute platform bed style, a cardboard frame is worth a look.

7. Concrete walls

Faux brick walls are a thing of the past—try faux concrete instead.

Industrial style stands the test of time, but it’s getting a new look in 2024. Rather than steel, exposed brick and natural wood, it’s the year of concrete. This rough, natural material adds some nice texture to your home. It looks best in bathrooms and kitchen backsplashes.

However, if you can’t build a concrete wall in your home, you can still get the look with wallpaper. This Brewster wallpaper looks like concrete, so you can create a statement wall masterpiece.

8. Ornate-inspired interiors

Maximalists will appreciate the appeal of bold metallics and eye-catching florals.

Some of the most popular movies and TV shows of the past year—think White Lotus, The Gilded Age, and Saltburn—feature ornate backdrops full of European-inspired homes with gorgeous plastered walls and rich fabrics. For the maximalists, tuning into this ornate style will feel natural.

This style embraces plaster and concrete walls decked out with gold trim and bold pieces of artwork.

Bring the style to your own home with gold accessories and satin florals. Hang your photos with a gold ornate frame like this one from Wayfair that’s beautifully decorated.

9. Bold tile patterns

May your next home DIY project be filled with new tiles and a satisfying end result.

When it comes to tiling, this is the year to go bold. While crisp white tile is a popular choice for bathrooms and kitchens, it’s a little dated. In 2024, go for patterned tiles. We love floral patterned tile that can deck your walls and floors.

If you don’t want to stray too far from white tiles, this mosaic tile comes in a simple black and white floral motif.

For something a little bolder, this porcelain tile features a gorgeous blueprint that will make your home stand out.

10. Curtains that let the light in

Reviewed / Jinchan / Home Decorators Collection

Don’t forget to upgrade your windows with the rest of your home.

After years of embracing colorful lights inside your home with sunset lamps and smart bulbs, it’s time to embrace your home’s natural light.

To let in all the light possible, reassess your curtains—without sacrificing privacy. Instead, try keeping shades on just the bottom half of your windows. Short cafe curtains, like these striped ones from Amazon, are cute and allow light to drift in, creating a sense of airiness in your home.

If you don’t want to abandon blinds, install top-down-bottom-up blinds that are light-filtering and also allow greater flexibility of coverage.

In AD PRO’s monthly Having a Moment column, AD senior design editor Hannah Martin reports as a weathervane for fads big and small, documenting the patterns and home decor trends she’s clocked in the pages of AD and beyond. Here, enjoy a look back at 2023’s most defining moments.

From nostalgic styles making a comeback to innovative responses to how we live today, there were many stand-out moments in the world of interior design this year. Reviewing them retrospectively, the selections sum up the past year’s tentpole memories—from the design fair debuts we’re still thinking about to the interiors that will inspire well into the new year. Before diving into the design forecasts and color predictions for 2024, take a minute to reflect on the home decor trends that ruled interiors this year.

Forget the subtlety of travertine (last year’s surface du jour) or the always-in elegance of snow-white Carrara. This year was all about an eye-popping specimen—strong veining, unusual colors, and (for the ultra-daring) perhaps a graphic mix of both. Surfaces need not blend into the background; they can say something too. Let’s call it personality marble—that essential dose of pattern that can make any interior pop. Take, for instance, the freestanding onyx bar Roman and Williams turned into a showstopping moment in Gwyneth Paltrow’s Montecito living room, or the all-over marble bathroom of Tinder founder Sean Rad and his wife, Lizzie Grover Rad, conjured by designer Jane Hallworth. Consider it a new kind of conversation piece for the home.

“With a rise in midcentury-modern home remodels and an increased nostalgia for retro furnishings, we’re seeing more customers favoring color,” says Alyssa Wilterdink, senior marketing manager at Kohler, which relaunched a duo of vintage hues for its plumbing fixtures in honor of the American manufacturer’s 150th anniversary this year. Designers are indeed leaning in: Virginia Tupker recently ordered custom colored Water Monopoly sinks in pale pink and blue for a family home in Connecticut; color fiend Frances Merrill installed a cobalt blue sink in the powder room of a Cape Ann, Massachusetts, home; and designer Oliver M. Furth opted for a vintage pink toilet from Kohler for artist Mary Wetherford’s midcentury-modern abode in LA.

This year, we witnessed a surge in designers adding color, pattern, and artistic flair to their projects with hand-painted tile. “I’ll tile just about anything,” says interior designer Jessica Jubelirer, who applied the treatment to the hearth, the bathrooms, the baseboards, and, most memorably, inset in the closet doors in a lakeside Wisconsin family home. Meanwhile, in a historic Connecticut family home designed by Virginia Tupker, Delft and Portuguese tiles create a sort of wainscoting in the entryway and bathrooms, as well as fireplace surrounds. In the kitchen of that project, hand-painted tile adds a splash of pattern (drawn from a William Morris motif) as a backsplash. Practical and durable with an artisan flair, hand-painted tile adds visual interest wherever needed. Adds Jubilerer: “Kitchens, bathrooms, and fireplaces can all benefit from its practicality and beauty.”

Massimiliano Locatelli’s Milan apartment features task lighting; an industrial, stainless-steel kitchen; and terrazzo floors.

This spring’s design fair circuit hinted at a return to the industrial minimalism, high-tech style of the ’70s and ’80s—an industrial revolution of the interior, if you will. In April we returned from Milan with notes about a minimalism resurgence, with a particular emphasis on industrial materials. Knoll had reissued some of high-tech star Joe D’Urso’s super-adaptable and sleek low tables from the ’80s. Ledongil Workshop’s experimental lighting and furnishings, on display at Ordet gallery, felt like an elevated take on track lighting. And at Drop City, designer Daisuke Yamamoto showcased a collection of clean-lined chairs made of the most frequently trashed construction material: lightweight gauge steel. Indeed, industrial materials and minimalist silhouettes were the protagonists of this year’s debuts.

“We’re blowing the dust off moire,” says Raffaele Fabrizio, creative director of Dedar, while showing off the Italian fabric house’s newly expanded Amoir Libre textile. Cue the ripple effect. As of late, a handful of brands and interior designers have redirected their gaze to the historic textile that oozes opulence, repackaging it for today’s quiet luxury. Interior designer Sophie Ashby, who recently wrapped a dressing room in a pale pink Dedar moire, praises the home decor trend for its ability to expand space: “When used in the right way it can really enhance a space, enveloping the interior with tactility whilst also subtly playing with light to make smaller spaces—such as dressing rooms or hidden nooks—appear larger.”

Before there was photography, botanists—or anyone wishing to document flora—created detailed illustrations, known as botanical studies, intended to convey the plant’s physical appearance and other qualities. Unsurprisingly, such botanical studies have long been used to decorate. Lately, the botanical studies trend—a longtime hallmark of traditional, even preppy interiors—is blooming anew. In Lauren Dupont’s Connecticut home, designed by Stephen Sills, a pair of antique botanical prints purchased at auction hang in her dressing room, and in her Palm Beach kitchen, Aerin Lauder mounted a grid of floral prints in the service pantry. Sure, there’s nothing innately groundbreaking about florals when it comes to home decor trends, but perhaps that’s just what gives them eternal life.

In his Manhattan loft, Colin King styles a minimalist bed—or “grandma-style,” as he dubs it.

In the bedroom, gone are the piles of decorative pillows and fussy, overstuffed duvets. Back is a simple coverlet that is perfectly happy not to take center stage. You know this super-simple look: a flat coverlet is laid across the bed, folded down a little at the top, and then back over a pair of standard pillows. “It always felt a bit traditional and almost religious,” says Colin King, the stylist and longtime AD contributor, who favors the minimalist bed. “It’s clean and tidy, simple but elegant. It gives the room the feeling you want your bedroom to have—serenity.” The back-to-basics look has been spotted in a restored Brooklyn Heights apartment by Augusta Hoffman, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s California bedroom designed by Jake Arnold, and Andre Mellone’s Manhattan sleeping quarters too.

In Germany and Austria between 1815 and 1850, when the Napoleonic wars had ended and a burgeoning middle class emerged, a new style of furniture was created to suit their needs: streamlined versions of more opulent Empire furniture, characterized by strong lines, warm local woods, and simplified shapes—though, notably, not totally stripped of ornament. Biedermeier furniture, as it would later be named, has regained appeal in contemporary interiors for its chameleon qualities. It brings a calculated hit of classicism to a cool, minimalist interior, but it can deliver streamlined modernity to one that is layered and super decorated. These days, says Campbell-Rey’s Charlotte Rey, it’s all about the mix: “It is important to not be afraid to mix them with color and other periods. Perhaps you place a Memphis Milano lamp on top of a Biedermeier sideboard? Being too respectful can make it feel overly polite.”

Do you know the return on investment (ROI) of your renovation project?

Some renovations can make your home more valuable. However, other projects may provide very little or no return. If you’re investing in a home renovation in hopes of recouping that money when you sell, it’s important to research and plan ahead before you begin to ensure you’re spending your money wisely.

Home renovation projects of all types are on the rise. In a recent study, 55% of homeowners reported renovating a part of their home in the past year.

But how many of these homeowners will see a return on their investment?

It depends. Getting a full recoup of remodeling costs isn’t very likely. And while smaller DIY projects probably won’t break the bank, homeowners should address whether a project is worth its weight in salt — especially before diving into large-scale remodels.

Keep in mind, though, that you can still potentially increase your home’s equity even if you don’t fully recoup the cost of certain improvements. Equity is the difference between your home’s current market value and the amount you owe on your mortgage. A home upgrade that doesn’t fully pay for itself dollar-for-dollar in terms of increased home value may still boost your home’s overall market value, thereby increasing your equity.

10 Home Improvements That Add Value

A way to determine whether a home improvement makes sense is to look at a project’s cost vs. its value assessment. This resulting renovation-to-resale value assessment number, “cost recouped,” can then be used to rank the financial benefit of comparable projects across the country.

Take a look at these popular home improvement projects and their ROI values. You may be surprised at what tops the list.

Pre-Renovation Checklist

Long before you start tearing down walls or ripping up floors, you should consider the following:

  1. Have you budgeted for the renovation costs?
  2. Is the remodel a temporary fix or a long-term lifestyle change?
  3. How long do you plan to live in the home?
  4. Can you afford the renovation without recouping a full or near-full ROI?
  5. How long will the renovation last?
  6. Will the improvements add value to your home equity?

Still unsure if your project is worth the cost? Here’s a more in-depth look at the questions above.

Don’t Guesstimate Your Renovation Budget

No matter how much you try to nail down a renovation budget, there will likely be unforeseen costs along the way. Plan ahead by getting a clear view of how much you can spend.

Talk to contractors, compare their rates and get your priorities in check. It’s easy to spring for granite countertops over laminate when you’re visiting the showroom, but if you need to rewire your electrical system to install the new kitchen appliances later, you might need more funds.

Quick Fix or Lifestyle Upgrade?

While the size of a project is largely dependent on budget, in some cases, a quick-fix repair may cost more money over time than a large-scale renovation that solves a major headache.

For example, if mold is growing on your first-floor ceiling due to a leak in an upstairs shower, you may consider replacing the grout as a short-term, low-cost solution. However, you should have the house inspected to determine the best way to address the issue — mold can be a more extensive problem than first meets the eye. Depending on the damage, you may need to completely redo the tile, drain and pipes and you could require professional mold remediation.

Getting professional advice now will help you pass an inspection later in case you decide to sell.

Will You Stay — A Forever Home or Prepping for a Sale?

If you’re preparing to put your home on the market, ensure your renovations appeal to buyers. One of the biggest misconceptions among homeowners is that major home improvements equate to more money in the final sale. That’s not always the case. If you’re planning to stay in your home for several years, make sure you can realistically live with the changes long term.

Research Your Project’s Regional ROI

It’s essential to consider the value of renovations in your region — not just on a national scale. In colder climates, energy efficiency projects may reap more value, while a swimming pool may dissuade buyers. On the other hand, in warmer regions, a pool may attract buyers to your home.

Adding additional rooms or square footage is one of the most impactful ways to increase your home’s value. An appraiser will be able to compare your home to those in your area who fall into the larger square footage category. Additional space can be used as an office, playroom or entertainment area, making it a worthwhile investment.

Considerations of Living Onsite While Renovating

Home improvement projects can get stressful and can’t always be completed over the weekend. Be sure to plan a realistic project timeline and make arrangements to get through the renovation chaos. With major renovations, it’s often pragmatic to set aside funds. If you’ll have to spend several hours away from home while the contractors complete their work, you may need to stay overnight in a hotel or plan a fun day out.

Also, be aware that when renovating or doing major construction on your home, you will be unable to refinance during that time. This is because an appraisal is typically required, and the home must be in safe and functional condition.

Increased Home Equity Benefits

Sometimes, home improvement projects solely benefit you — and that’s OK! Increasing your home’s value has several benefits. If you’re staying in your home, you might be able to apply the equity to secure a home equity line of credit (HELOC), a home equity loan (HEL) or even a cash-out refinance to help pay off debts, pay for college tuition or purchase a new car, for example.

If your home is on the market, your home improvements could help it sell faster and for more money. However, keep in mind that if you want to attract investors, most require a home listing to be off the market for a certain period of time before they can consider investing in it. Typically, this time ranges anywhere from six months to a year, even if the home was only listed on the market for one day.

Remodeling Mistakes to Avoid

When it comes to making home improvements, too often, homeowners rely on instinct rather than research to decide which projects to embark on. So, while converting the garage to an extra bedroom might seem like a good idea, the inconvenience of street parking isn’t likely to entice a potential homebuyer anytime soon.

Some other remodeling mistakes to avoid:

Underestimating project costs. It’s important to fully understand your project’s size, scope and complexity. Consider the supplies, skilled professionals, inspections and permits that may be required, and any systems, such as electrical or plumbing, that will be affected and impact your costs.

Not anticipating issues. Things don’t always go according to plan. Ensure you have a buffer of funds to manage unexpected issues that may arise.

Having an unrealistic timeline. Major gut renovations can take months to design and build, which leads to higher labor costs. Can you live in your home through the renovation if it takes longer than anticipated? Do you have a contingency plan?

Not doing your research. If you want to enhance your home’s resale value, do your homework to ensure your upgrades will help you maximize your investment.

Don’t Rely on Reality TV for Ideas

Did you know that one of the most valuable home investments is adding fiberglass insulation to a home’s attic?

Probably not. But watching contractors stuff the ceiling with insulation on popular home improvement shows just isn’t as interesting as watching designers discuss the layout of a total kitchen overhaul, complete with high-end fixtures, granite countertops and top-of-the-line commercial-grade appliances.

An overly pricey, sophisticated kitchen may backfire once a home is back on the market. A minor kitchen remodel, on the other hand, such as painting the cupboards or replacing laminate flooring with ceramic tiling, not only provides a more cost-effective solution for homeowners, but may also yield a higher return on their investment. Painting kitchen cabinets is an inexpensive cost to a homeowner because they can be painted on-site instead of at a warehouse and then shipped.

Make Your Home Improvement Plan

Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer with a growing family or a near-retiree looking to sell and downsize, it’s important to understand which home improvement projects make the most sense for you.

If you’re renovating with ROI in mind, consider how prospective homebuyers will view your interior, exterior, outdoor space and landscaping. Focus on projects that improve your home’s functionality and appeal to a wide range of buyers. And remember, even relatively small renovations can still increase your home’s value and equity.

Talk to a real estate agent to get their guidance on which projects may have the biggest impact on your home’s value.
