With its warm climate, beautiful scenery, and dog-friendly culture, Austin is an ideal place to explore with your furry friend. From hiking trails and swimming holes to restaurants and breweries, there are plenty of dog-friendly activities to enjoy in Austin. Whether you and your pup are looking to rent an apartment in Austin or purchase a home in the area, Austin has something for everyone. Let’s explore some of the best dog-friendly things to do in Austin so that you can go on an adventure with your four-legged companion.

1. Explore Lady Bird Lake

Not only does Lady Bird Lake have stunning views of the city skyline, but it’s also a great place to bring your dog for some exercise. You can take your dog for a brisk walk or leisurely stroll along the 10-mile hike and bike trail surrounding the lake. Additionally, you can rent a stand-up paddleboard and explore the lake together. Lady Bird Lake is also home to several dog-friendly parks, including the Auditorium Shores Dog Park and the Mary Dawson Dog Park, where your pup can run, play, and socialize with other dogs. 

2. Visit Zilker Park

Zilker Park is an excellent destination for dog owners in Austin. With around 350 acres of open space, you and your furry friend can enjoy the trails that wind through the greenery, swimming holes like Barton Springs Pool, and designated off-leash areas where your dog can run, play, and socialize with other dogs freely. Additionally, the park is a popular spot for picnics and outdoor gatherings, making it an ideal place to bring your dog for a fun day out.

Some of the best dog parks in Austin include the Bull Creek District Park, which offers over 5 miles of hiking trails and a creek for dogs to play in and the Zilker Park Off-Leash Area, a fenced-in space with water fountains, benches, and trees.

Bringing your dog to a pet-friendly brewery is a unique way to spend time with your dog while living in Austin. Many of Austin’s breweries welcome dogs on their patios, allowing you to enjoy a cold beer and good company. These breweries often provide water bowls and treats for dogs to make them feel just as welcome as their human companions. Some of the best pet-friendly breweries in Austin include the Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden, which offers over 100 beers on tap and a spacious outdoor patio perfect for dogs. The Hops and Grain Brewing, a dog-friendly brewery with a laid-back atmosphere, outdoor seating area, and delicious grain-based dog treats. And the Live Oak Brewing Company, which offers a shaded beer garden that is perfect for enjoying a cold beer with your furry friend by your side.

Austin has several beautiful hiking trails that allow dogs on a leash, providing the perfect opportunity for you and your pup to explore the great outdoors together. Some of the best pet-friendly hikes in Austin include the Barton Creek Greenbelt, a beautiful, scenic trail that features swimming holes, waterfalls, and scenic views. St. Edward’s Park, an 80-acre park with hiking trails and a creek for dogs to cool off in. And the River Place Nature Trail, a moderate hike that offers stunning views of the Texas Hill Country.

Austin hosts several dog-friendly events throughout the year as well, ranging from pet expos to dog-friendly parties and festivals. These events offer a fun experience for both you and your pup, providing the opportunity to meet other dog owners, socialize, and explore the city together. Some of the best pet-friendly events in Austin include the Austin Pet Expo, a two-day event that features pet vendors, exhibits, and animal rescue groups, and the Puppies and Popsicles event, which offers frozen treats for humans and dogs alike.
