The older we get, the more important health care becomes. So it makes sense that the states with the best health care look better and better as retirement approaches.
Recently, WalletHub ranked all 50 states according to the quality of health care they offer.
In compiling its rankings, WalletHub looked at more than a dozen factors, including:
- Family medicine physicians per capita
- Top-rated geriatrics hospitals
- The share of the population 65 and older with good or better health
Following are the states that WalletHub says offer retirees the best health care.
1. Minnesota
Minnesota tops the list of states offering great retiree health care. You will even find the world-famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
The state is also a nice place for seniors who find a change of seasons invigorating. Minnesota landed both of its “Twin Cities” — Minneapolis and St. Paul — in the top five of “2023’s Best Cities for Ice Skating.”
2. Massachusetts
In addition to offering retirees first-class health care, Massachusetts is among the “15 States Where the Most People Have Health Insurance.”
In 2021, just 2.5% of the state’s residents did not have health coverage.
3. Connecticut
Connecticut has a long and storied history of excellent health care. Yale School of Medicine opened its doors way back in 1813, and it was the site of:
- The first X-ray performed in the U.S.
- The first successful use of penicillin
- The first use of cancer chemotherapy
