Are you considering buying a fixer-upper? While it can be a great way to save money and get a home that suits your unique tastes and needs, it’s important to know what you’re getting into before you sign on the dotted line. Here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Understand the Cost
Buying a fixer-upper can be an affordable alternative, however, it’s important to understand the potential true cost of the project before you start. To ensure that you’re aware of the necessary repairs and their associated costs, get a thorough inspection of the property. Make sure to check the quality of the foundation, roof, electrical and plumbing systems. Additionally, it’s crucial to consider the expenses for permits, materials, and labour in your final budget.
2. Know Your Limits
While DIY projects are fun and rewarding, fixer-uppers often require extensive work and time. If you’re not handy with a hammer or don’t have experience with major renovations, you may want to think twice before taking on the challenge of a fixer-upper. Hiring professionals to do the work can be expensive, but it may be necessary if you want the job done right.
3. Consider the Time Frame
Transforming a fixer-upper into your dream home can be time-consuming. If you’re on a tight schedule or have other commitments demanding your attention, a fixer-upper may not be your best choice. Make sure you have a realistic idea of how long the project will take and whether or not you have the time and energy to see it through.
4. Factor in Resale Value
If you plan to invest in a fixer-upper, ensure that it doesn’t become a financial burden by costing more than its actual value. It is possible to strike a good deal on the property, however, make sure that any renovations made will increase the property’s value in the long run. Research the market and talk to real estate professionals to get a sense of what buyers are looking for in your area and what features can help make the property stand out.
5. Have a Plan
Finally, it’s important to have a plan before you start a fixer-upper project. Without a clear plan and budget, your fixer-upper is at risk of becoming a money pit. Know what you want to achieve and how you’re going to get there. Create a budget, timeline, and list of priorities to keep you on track. With a solid plan in place, you’ll be better equipped to handle any unexpected hurdles or delays.

An estimated 14 million Americans have at least $10,000 in credit card debt.
Five-figure credit card debt, and the interest that accrues along with it, can feel overwhelming. It’s the kind of debt that keeps people up at night, and prevents them from pursuing their other financial goals.
But, that debt doesn’t have to stick around forever. With a strategy, chipping away at a $10,000 in credit card debt is achievable. Here are some options for how to pay off $10,000 in credit card debt.
Tips for Paying Off $10,000 in Credit Card Debt
Paying down $10,000 in credit card debt takes discipline and time. These tips and tools could help speed up the journey toward debt freedom.
Consider a Side Hustle
If your budget doesn’t have much wiggle room to make extra payments toward credit card debt, you might consider finding ways to generate more income. Starting a side hustle could be a powerful way to pay down a $10,000 credit card debt faster. Whether it’s grabbing a job in the gig economy or taking a catering job on the weekends, you can put those paychecks toward your credit card debt.
Ask for a Raise
If time is limited for a side hustle, think of how you could make more money in your current role. Is it time to ask for a raise, for instance?
Similarly, switching jobs may land you a higher salary. Nearly half of all Americans who switched roles last year saw an increase in salary. Just make sure that extra income goes toward debt payoff, and not lifestyle creep.
Switch to Cash
When you’re paying down $10,000 in credit card debt, it’s important to avoid accruing a higher balance. Adding more debt can not only feel discouraging, it can extend your payoff timeline.
As you tackle paying down debt, consider avoiding any further spending on credit cards. That can take the form of paying for things in cash, or using a debit card where you can only spend what you actually have. Making a switch to cash means you’re less likely to add to your burden of debt.
Debt Management Plans
While tips and tricks may help you pay down $10,000 in credit card debt, you may have to consider a larger overall strategy to move you towards payoff. Having a debt management plan in place can take some of the pressure away and could put you on a track toward paying off debt faster.
Two popular methods to accelerate debt repayment include the snowball and avalanche method.
The snowball method prioritizes paying off small debts first and working your way up. Here’s how:
1. Make the minimum monthly payments on all debts.
2. Take inventory of all your debts and order them from lowest outstanding balance to highest.
3. Put any extra cash toward the smallest balance debt.
4. Repeat this until the lowest debt is paid off.
5. Next, move onto the next lowest debt, adding the surplus cash from step 2 to this card’s monthly payments.
6. Continue to repeat this process, scaling up to the high-balance debts once you pay off the lower ones.
While this method can seem counterintuitive because of the interest that high balances can generate, starting off with small wins has psychological benefits for some. Having those wins early on may motivate you to move forward.
If you tend to be more disciplined and don’t mind playing the long game, you might prefer the debt avalanche method to pay off $10,000 in debt. Here’s how to deploy the avalanche method:
1. Make minimum payments on all debts.
2. Compile all your debt, and order it by interest rate from highest to lowest.
3. Put any extra cash toward the debt with the highest interest rate.
4. Repeat until the highest-interest debt it paid off.
5. Move onto the debt with the next-highest interest rate. Put any extra cash toward this balance until it’s paid off.
6. Continue this process, prioritizing the highest interest debt first, until all balances are settled.
Typically, the debt avalanche saves more money in interest payments in the long run. However, it can take time to see a win with this method, as opposed to debt snowball.
Credit Card Debt Forgiveness
Credit card debt forgiveness is not as simple as waving a magic wand at your balances and watching them disappear. Forgiveness does not mean the debt’s completely erased, and it comes with its own drawbacks.
Credit card debt forgiveness only becomes an option when a cardholder stops paying their debt and the credit card company sells the outstanding balance to a debt collector. From there, you can negotiate with the debt collector as to how much debt to repay.
Debt collectors buy debts for pennies on the dollar, and thus are willing to recuperate just a portion of the initial amount owed. For example, if you owe $10,000 in credit card debt and it goes to collections, you may be able to negotiate to settle the debt for just $5,000. That payment may be a lump sum or small payments over time.
While credit card debt forgiveness means paying less than the total owed, it has a fair share of drawbacks. Neglecting credit card debt can wreak havoc on a person’s credit score, and you’ll still need to pay some portion of the debt.
Additional Options for Paying Off Debt
Credit card debt forgiveness isn’t the only route toward paying off $10,000 in credit card debt. Depending on your situation, one of the following solutions may work.
Balance Transfers
Some credit card companies allow cardholders to make credit card balance transfers. That means you transfer the outstanding balance from one credit card to another, often with an introductory low interest rate or no interest.
Balance transfers do come with fees, but depending on how much you owe and how much you could save on interest, it could be worth it in the long run. However, keep in mind the interest rate the balance transfer offers may be for a limited time. You’ll want to pay off the remaining balance before the rate rises, or you could owe more than you did before the transfer.
Personal Loans
There are a number of common uses for personal loans, including paying off credit card debt. Often, a personal loan will have a lower interest rate than credit cards, which could help you pay down your debt faster and save on interest. If you’re struggling to figure out how to pay off $10,000 in credit card debt, consolidating multiple balances into a single loan also may streamline the process.
Your credit score can impact if you get approved for a personal loan, as well as what interest rate you receive. If you have a less than stellar credit score, you may not get approved. Using a personal loan calculator can help you determine if this strategy will net you savings and, if so, how much.

The Takeaway
Paying down $10,000 in debt might not be easy, but with the right strategies, it is possible. This could mean adopting an aggressive payoff method or looking for additional options to pay down the debt, like personal loans.

How we picked these accounts
The most important feature of a bank is that it’s insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Beyond that, it’s simply a matter of highlighting the features that are most important to you.
We considered all that while curating the above list of bank account options. The list combines a bit of everything, from great interest rates on savings accounts to in-person service at branches throughout the state. Here are the features we prioritize in looking for the best financial institution in Nebraska.
In-Person Customer Service
These days, you can do the majority of your banking through apps and ATMs. But there’s something about that local bank experience that makes it stand out. If you prioritize personal service, branch access may be most essential for you.
But when looking at financial institutions, keep in mind that brick-and-mortar banks come in a variety of formats. Local Nebraska banks tend to have more of a community focus, but national banks with local branches will give you branch access while you’re traveling. Once you’ve narrowed down the options, you can pick the one with other features you need.
Online Banking Features
Banking online has brought convenience to the experience. You can deposit checks, transfer money, pay bills, and keep an eye on your accounts. Some banking apps even allow you to interact with a live teller for that personal customer service you’d typically get at brick-and-mortar locations.
Look for an online bank with fee-free withdrawals both locally and while you’re traveling. Also, make sure you’ll have a way to deposit cash if it ever becomes necessary.
Cost and List of Fees
Banks need to make money, and often this comes through interest. However, they also earn a little on the fees they charge for deposit accounts.
To compete, banks sometimes waive monthly fees. However, you’ll be expected to maintain a minimum amount in the account. This is where some online accounts can win over traditional banks. They’ll waive these requirements and give you a truly fee-free banking solution.
From the largest banks in the country to community banks, Nebraska has plenty of options when it comes to storing your money. Thanks to banking apps and online access, you can go with a bank that doesn’t even have physical branches. Take a look at all the features and choose the best Nebraska bank for you.

10 Famous Celebrities Who Look Like They Smell Terrible
We’ve all had moments of hygiene faux pas—but these celebrities just look like they don’t take care of themselves at all.
When Roe v. Wade was overturned, much of the country was in disbelief. A vital part of health care had been stripped away overnight. Now those with the capability to get pregnant have to deal with the sudden emotional and financial burden that having improper abortion access causes.
There are many people who will be affected by this Supreme Court ruling. Yes, the largest groups are women, trans men, and non-binary people, but the economy as a whole may be facing some serious consequences as well.
What’s Ahead:
Health Care Costs are Going to Skyrocket for Those Who Do Need Abortions
Perhaps the largest and most direct financial impact of the overturning of Roe v. Wade is how it will affect the cost of having an abortion. Since many states plan to or have already quickly passed laws criminalizing abortion, those who need abortions in those states will need to seek care elsewhere.
Christine Charbonneau, former CEO of a Planned Parenthood affiliate and current host of the FallOfRoe podcast, explains further, saying:
“Firstly, for people who were born with uteruses, making abortion illegal in many states results in the need for travel, lodging, and out-of-pocket medical expenses which will very likely no longer be covered by health insurance.”
Charbonneau also told me that, for those who decide to (or have to) keep their babies, insurance costs jump substantially, adding yet another cost to the many other costs associated with having a child.

Poverty Rates Could Increase for Those Turned Away and Their Children
Many people choose not to have children because it’s impossible for them to financially afford to do so. In a study where participants were asked why they were getting an abortion, 56% cited financial concerns.
Additionally, the American Journal of Public Health published a study that examines the outcome, economically, of denying proper abortion access.
“Throughout the period between 1 and 5 years after seeking an abortion, turnaway-birth women were more likely than near limits to report subjective poverty — not having enough money to cover basic living expenses.”
The effects don’t stop at the person that gives birth, either. With a parent or both parents potentially living in poverty, the child is likely to face these unintended consequences.
The Turnaway Study, a long-term study that looked at how unintended pregnancy affects women’s lives, found that children born after an abortion is denied are more likely to live below the federal poverty level than those born to women who were able to get an abortion at an earlier point in their life.
There’s Going to Be Decreased Participation in the Workforce
Forced birth takes away from the overall productivity of the working world in general. Predominantly, it’s women (or those who give birth to their children) that take time off or leave the workforce altogether to care for a child. If birth rates go up, more people could leave the workforce, adding to the current labor shortage we’re facing.
This is harmful both to employers and employees.
“In the case of the need for travel for care, absenteeism is an expensive cost for the employer, not just for the person receiving care, but possibly in terms of family leave for the person accompanying her,” explains Charbonneau.
Many employers now offer inclusive leave options that include both parents, putting two people out of work during unplanned pregnancies.
State Economies and the GDP Could Also See Negative Changes
There have already been documented studies that show how restricting abortion access can negatively affect the economy, specifically the economies of the states that don’t provide abortion access. Since it’s expected that those states will have higher rates of pregnancy, the labor force will shrink as more people stay home with newborn children.
This isn’t the only issue with higher birth rates, though. Charbonneau explains that these states now have to factor in the cost of these additional births.
“States which have made abortion illegal or inaccessible have not factored in the costs associated with this. In each of the 50 states, currently, the state pays for between 47% and 52% of all births, and attendant expenses for the postpartum period. Forced pregnancy radically increases the budget required to finance these policies.”
Who Feels the Financial Effects Most?
It’s also important to discuss that a lack of access to abortion will not affect people the same across the board.
Those who will be most financially affected by the overturning of Roe v. Wade are the ones who historically need access to abortion the most. These include:
Those With a Low Income
Those with lower incomes often have less access to comprehensive health care and education, which can lead to more pregnancies. Many of the states that are passing abortion restrictions also have the largest number of low-income households.
The reversal of Roe v Wade will likely raise the cost of abortions for many people, meaning lower income households will have less access to this procedure than those with higher income.
Here’s more information about how the cost of abortions has changed in a post Roe v Wade world.
Women of Color
Women of color are also affected by societal systems in place more so than white women, since they live in areas that have historically low levels of contraceptive education and fewer health care facilities.
Specifically, Black women have the highest rates of abortion accounting for almost 24% of total abortions performed. This means reducing access could have serious implications for this section of society.
An unplanned pregnancy will both reduce their ability to earn income while simultaneously increasing their living expenses.
Disabled People
Those with disabilities often face discrimination when seeking proper health care. Decreasing abortion access could make this yet another hurtle that disabled individuals have to face.
Add to the fact that disabled people are three times more likely to be subject to a sexual assault and the risks here are even greater.
Trans and Non-Binary People Who Can Get Pregnant
Many trans men and non-binary people still have the ability to get pregnant. Like the other groups mentioned above, they face increased levels of discrimination in education and health care, and already lack legal protections that keep them safe when seeking out medical providers, making abortions even more difficult and expensive to find.
How to Support Those Who Need Abortions
Since there are no real financial positives to reducing access to abortions, if you’re looking for ways to help or you need access to a safe abortion, there are different abortion funds you can support or use to get the help you need.
Charbonneau says that a good way to find a provider is to use AbortionFinder.org. Additionally, you can find funds to support on AbortionFunds.org.
Summary
The overturning of Roe v. Wade is set to have financial implications for much of the country, both emotionally and economically. There could be labor shortages, negative economic consequences, and severe psychological harm to both the person giving birth and the child.
Additionally, Roe v. Wade set a precedent for many rulings that gave Americans a right to privacy. Without it, there could be more disastrous changes on the horizon.

Pets bring joy, love, and companionship into our lives, but they also come with a unique set of challenges when it comes to keeping our homes clean and tidy. From shedding fur to tracking in dirt, pet-related messes can sometimes feel overwhelming. Whether you own a home in a wetter climate like Seattle, WA or an apartment in sunny Scottsdale, AZ, with the right strategies and a little extra effort, you can maintain a clean and pet-friendly place. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore effective cleaning techniques, practical tips, and useful products to help you keep your home spotless while enjoying the company of your furry friends.
1. Establish a regular cleaning routine
Maintaining a clean home starts with establishing a consistent cleaning routine. Create a schedule that includes daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. Daily tasks may include sweeping or vacuuming pet hair, wiping down surfaces, and cleaning litter boxes or pet bedding. Weekly tasks can involve mopping floors, washing pet toys, and sanitizing food and water bowls. Monthly tasks should cover more extensive cleaning, such as deep-cleaning carpets and upholstery or washing curtains and pet bedding.
2. Invest in pet-friendly flooring and furniture
Choosing the right flooring and furniture can significantly ease the cleaning process. Opt for pet-friendly flooring options like laminate, tile, or vinyl, as they are durable and easy to clean. Avoid carpets, which tend to trap pet hair and odors. When it comes to furniture, select materials that are resistant to stains and can be easily wiped clean, such as leather or microfiber. Additionally, consider using washable slipcovers or pet-friendly blankets to protect your furniture from pet-related messes.
3. Tackle pet hair with the right tools
Pet hair can quickly accumulate and cling to surfaces, making it a constant challenge for pet owners. Combat this issue by using the right tools. Invest in a high-quality vacuum cleaner specifically designed for pet hair removal. Look for models with powerful suction, specialized attachments, and filters that trap allergens. Regularly vacuum all surfaces, including furniture, rugs, and curtains. Additionally, use a lint roller or a pet hair remover brush to remove hair from clothing or upholstery.
According to Jomarie Booth & Melanie Deromedi of K9 Feline Master Cutz, “cleaning up the floors can be quick and easy, with a Hair Removal Rubber Broom. It works great on any type of flooring, we use it on carpet and tile. Our furry floors have never been so clean.”
4. Implement paw cleaning stations
Prevent dirt and outdoor debris from entering your home by creating paw cleaning stations near entryways. Place absorbent mats or rugs at the door, along with a bucket or tray filled with water to dip your pet’s paws in. “Use a patterned mat on the inside of your door ways. You won’t be able to see the dirt collecting,” says pet care providers Whitney and Keith from KW Walkers. Teach your pets to wait patiently while you clean their paws, ensuring that they are clean and dry before entering the house. This simple practice can significantly reduce the amount of dirt and mud your pets bring indoors.
5. Address and prevent pet odors
Pets can occasionally leave behind unpleasant odors that linger in your home. To tackle pet odors effectively, start by regularly cleaning your pet’s living area, including litter boxes, cages, or bedding. Use odor-neutralizing sprays or air fresheners specifically formulated for pet odors. ”If you know you’re going to be away for longer than anticipated, put down absorbent pads to prevent accidents on your carpets or floors,” states pet groomer Danielle Simms of HushPuppies Spa. Additionally, you can maintain proper ventilation in your home by opening windows or using air purifiers to keep the air fresh and circulating.
6. Manage litter box odors
Litter box odors can be particularly challenging to eliminate. Ensure you clean the litter box daily, removing waste and replacing litter as needed. Consider using clumping litter, as it simplifies the cleaning process. Place an odor-absorbing pad or baking soda at the bottom of the litter box to help neutralize smells. If possible, position the litter box in a well-ventilated area or use a litter box enclosure to minimize odors. “Keep cat litter contained,” says pet care professional Crystal Nuthall. “I keep the cat litter in a closet with a cat hole on the door. There is a motion sensor light and an air filter that is always running. I also keep a mat under the door to trap litter on both sides.”
7. Use pet-safe cleaning products
When cleaning your home, it’s essential to use pet-safe cleaning products to protect your furry companions from harmful chemicals. Opt for natural, non-toxic cleaning solutions or make your own by using ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. Ensure you read labels carefully and avoid products that contain bleach, ammonia, or other potentially harmful substances. Regularly rinse surfaces to remove any residue that may be harmful to your pets.
8. Groom your pets regularly
Regular grooming sessions can significantly reduce shedding and keep your pets cleaner. “Brush your pets’ fur frequently using a pet-specific brush or a grooming glove to reduce shedding and dander,” says professional groomer, Juan Abreu of Kontota. This helps remove loose hair and prevents it from accumulating around your home. Additionally, trim your pets’ nails regularly to minimize scratches on furniture and floors. Bathing your pets as needed also helps keep them clean and fresh, reducing odors and dirt they bring inside.
Keeping a clean and pet-friendly home requires dedication, consistency, and the implementation of practical strategies. By establishing a regular cleaning routine, investing in pet-friendly materials, using the right cleaning tools, and prioritizing pet grooming, you can effectively manage pet-related messes and enjoy a clean living environment. Remember, a clean home not only benefits you but also contributes to the health and well-being of your beloved pets. Embrace these tips, adapt them to your specific needs, and create a harmonious living space where you and your pets can thrive together.

Upgrade your home’s heating and cooling system with a smart thermostat. These devices not only provide convenience but also help you save energy and reduce utility costs. This may not necessarily change the look of you home by much, but it will have a big impact on keeping your home at a comfortable temperature every day.
8. Build a vertical herb garden
Utilize your outdoor space or even a sunny corner indoors to create a vertical herb garden. Build a simple wooden frame or repurpose a hanging shoe organizer to hold small pots or planters. Achieve the perfect shabby chic aesthetic with these shopping tips and tricks.
Blending vintage and French country aesthetics, shabby chic is one of the most popular interior design trends of today among trendy styles like Japandi and Coastal Grandmother. Elegant, classical furniture is given a rustic twist with distressed paints and worn fabrics.
Cottage-style items like metal jugs meet glittering chandeliers for a look that’s equal parts warm and cozy but also romantic and glamorous. Neutral, muted colors are the main colorways, with pops of color added in — usually soft pastels like pink and blue.
If you want to curate this stylish and trendy aesthetic in your apartment, here’s how you can find the right type of decor and furnishings.
How to find shabby chic furniture and decor for your apartment
Due to its heavy use of vintage (or vintage-styled) furniture, thrifting and going to antique stores are some good ways to source the right style of items for your shabby chic apartment. But that can take time to curate the right pieces.
If you want to realize your vision faster, finding shabby chic decor and furniture online at major retailers like Amazon is easy. You can also follow home and lifestyle influencers and blogs like French Country Cabin and Amy Berry for shabby chic design inspiration and ideas.
17 shabby chic decor ideas for your apartment
Not sure where to start decorating your apartment as shabby chic? These 17 decor items will look right at home in any shabby chic setting, giving you a good springboard for other decor ideas.

Cottage and farmhouse elements are a key part of the shabby chic look, which you can incorporate with a vintage-looking metal jug vase. Its petite size, pitcher style and “Flowers & Garden” branding make it perfect as a flower vase.

4. Pink and ivory oriental wool rug

This rug will look nice contrasted against gray and tan furniture, and the wool fabric will feel great underfoot.

Delicate accessories go a long way to completing the shabby chic look. Use a lace macrame tablecloth on any kind of table, from side tables to dining tables, to add an air of glamour and elegance.

Old-fashioned, vintage lanterns are another in-style touch for the shabby chic aesthetic. Distressed white paint on metal adds a rustic vibe, while elegant, curled metalwork brings in fairy-tale elements. This standing floor lamp fits the bill, with its arched gooseneck and burnished brass finish further fitting the shabby chic look.
8. French country-style hanging chandelier

One of the easiest ways to add that touch of glamour to your shabby chic abode is by hanging a small chandelier. Tiny chandeliers are a big part of the aesthetic, elevating the cottage-core theme of the room with its grand appearance. This French country-style example with dangling pendants and fake candles will look right at home in any shabby chic apartment. Just be sure that the chandelier you choose isn’t too big, as petite and delicate is the name of the game for this style.

With its style references grounded in the French countryside and cottage-core, florals are a motif that shows up frequently in shabby chic interior design. Best of all, this adhesive paper can also work for cabinets, shelves, dressers and other flat surfaces. So if you don’t want to fill a whole wall with it, you can still incorporate it into the overall look. It’s easily removable as well, which makes it very renter-friendly.

If it’s March, it must be time to talk about cars. The annual auto issue of Consumer Reports landed in my mailbox this week, and I spent some time skimming the pages.
I’m not nearly as interested in car info as I used to be, but I know that many folks are in the market for a new car, and I think Consumer Reports is a great source for info. Plus, it’s fun to review their findings to see what (if anything) has changed.
This year, the Consumer Reports website — even the part that’s not behind a paywall — has plenty of useful info. There are video reviews of top cars again in 2012, although external embedding has been disabled (meaning I can’t share a video with you here — you have to go to the CR website to see them yourself). You can access all of the free, public content from the site’s April 2012 issue homepage. But let’s review some of the major news.
Note: Because I continue to love my 2004 Mini Cooper (which I bought used), I’ll throw in random Mini stats throughout this article, as I do every year. Humor me.
Here are the Consumer Reports top-rated vehicles in ten categories (with previous years’ top cars in parentheses).
Affordable family sedan (formerly budget car): Hyundai Sonata (2011: Honda Fit)
Family hauler: Toyota Sienna V6 (2011: Toyota Sienna, 2010: Mazda5, 2007-2009: Toyota Sienna)
Family sedan: Toyota Camry Hybrid (2010-2011: Nissan Altima, 2007-2009: Honda Accord)
Family SUV: Toyota Highlander (2011: Kia Sorento, 2010: Chevrolet Traverse, 2009: Toyota Highlander, 2008: Hyundai Santa Fe, 2007: Toyota Highlander Hybrid)
Green car: Toyota Prius (2007-2011: Toyota Prius)
Pickup Truck: Chevrolet Avalanche (2011: Chevrolet Avalanche, 2010: Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2009: Chevrolet Avalanche, 2008: Chevrolet Silverado 1500)
Small car: Subaru Impreza (2011: Hyundai Elantra, 2008-2010: Hyundai Elantra SE, 2007: Honda Civic)
Small SUV: Toyota RAV4 (2011: Toyota RAV4, 2010: Subaru Forester, 2007-2009: Toyota RAV4)
Sports sedan: Infiniti G (2009-2011: Infiniti G37, 2007-2008: Infiniti G35)
Sporty Car: Ford Mustang (2011: Ford Mustang, 2010: Volkswagen GTI, 2007-2009: Mazda MX-5 Miata)
The magazine no longer picks a “best car overall”, but if it did, that honor would probably go once again to the Lexus LS 460L, which used to claim the top spot every year, and which continues to have the top road score for all vehicles (with 99 our of 100 possible points). (As in previous years, the Mini Cooper scored an 81 on the road test for 2012.)
To me, the big shocker was the rating of top automakers. For years, Honda has ruled the roost in the Consumer Reports‘ annual round-up. Not this year. This year, Honda fell to fourth place. Who’s number one? Subaru. (Although, to be fair, Subaru, Mazda, Toyota, and Honda are all bunched close together at the top of the chart.) Lowly Chrysler brings up the rear.
This year, there’s a clear winner in fuel economy. The Nissan Leaf gets an astounding 106 miles per gallon. (In reality, as a couple of readers have noted, as an electric car, the Leaf doesn’t actually use any gasoline.) The Chevrolet Volt gets 61 mpg to take second place. Then there are a bunch of hybrids at about 38-44 mpg. Consumer Reports says that the Mini Cooper gets 30 mpg, and that’s exactly what mine has averaged over the past six months (and it’s eight years old!). The worst fuel economy? There’s a four-way tie at 13 mpg: Cadillac Escalade, Dodge Ram 2500 (diesel), Ford Expedition EL, and Lincoln Navigator.
In addition to ratings of 276 vehicles, the 2012 auto issue also includes a round-up of top tires, info on individual model reliability, a summary of safety statistics, and a guide to buying used cars.
For a second year, the magazine has done away with some useful info for finding inexpensive gems. I miss the “most overlooked cars” list, for instance. I’m not sure there’s much use to the “top driving gripes” and the “features we love and loathe” lists that take up and entire page. This is USA Today level fluff; I’d rather see some sort of useful data.
Some of the material from the Consumer Reports 2012 Auto Issue is freely available on their website. For instance, check out these useful pages about used cars:
The best used vehicles for under $20,000
Best used cars for fuel economy
Other information, however, is locked behind a paywall. And don’t forget that you can always find great info on the Consumer Reports car blog.

Don’t forget that Get Rich Slowly features car-buying tips from time-to-time. Notable articles include:
I also recommend two older AskMetafilter threads:
The Consumer Reports car issue is an excellent resource. If you think you might purchase a vehicle soon, I recommend it. But I think it’s a little dangerous to pick up just for the sake of browsing. You may find yourself moved from merely curious to “itching to buy”!
Christmas is coming at full speed, but supply chain shortages are disrupting the restocking of popular items. In-store supply is being jeopardized by worker shortages, COVID-19 shutdowns and their aftermath, and shipping challenges. We’ve been dealing with shortages since the pandemic first started, so while it’s not a new development, it’s still just as frustrating. This is just one of the many reasons we should patronize small businesses—though they may not have the exact thing we’re looking for, they are likely more competent (and more reliable!) than the corporations we typically buy from. Here are six reasons why you might prefer shopping local this winter!
Unique Gifts
We’ve all become so used to the almost-invasive accessibility of Amazon and other big retail chains that it’s hard to imagine any sort of alternative. After all, being able to order anything we want from the comfort of our own home is tempting. If you want to find unique gifts and a welcoming atmosphere, however, you’ll have so much more luck at a local shop.
Convenience
When it comes to convenience, you’re better off with a small local shop. Maybe you’ve got a mom-and-pop shop just down the road from you, which is likely more convenient than hunting for one toy in the vastness of big-box stores. Plus, shopping locally is a more personalized experience—a smaller business means workers can devote more time and attention to their customers.
Expertise
Consequently, local business owners are experts on the products they’re selling because they themselves have curated the collection. They’re also tapped into what customers want, and can adjust their inventory as needed, providing a more individualized experience than can be offered at chain retailers. Local business owners are passionate about their products and usually take more time to get to know their customers. Local business owners have to be experts in their field in order to keep up with the demands of their customers.
Investment in Your Community
Small businesses have been hit hard by the repercussions of the pandemic, so it’s important to support your local shops by choosing them over chain-stores whenever you can. When you support local businesses, you’re investing in your community, thus allowing new businesses to continue to open up and prosper in the neighborhood. When profits stay local, it increases the community’s wealth. Shopping locally is the best way to show pride in your city and help support the businesses that make your city unique.
Better Deals
These shops are also more likely to have great deals! Since it’s a small business, not only is the customer service more personalized, but the smaller clientele means these shops will have sales to reel in more customers. Big box stores might have a sale here and there, but they are also just as likely to raise prices as demand goes up. Sometimes prices at local businesses are better to begin with, anyway—they don’t have the overhead that larger stores might have, so they don’t have to worry about recouping those funds.
Quality Products
You’re more likely to find quality products at local shops. Instead of going to a retail store to buy a mass-produced gift, you can visit a local business and find treasures you wouldn’t be able to buy anywhere else. Small businesses are much more likely to carry unique items from local vendors and manufacturers, giving you access to an exclusive lineup of products. It’s a great way to avoid giving predictable gifts, too—while it might be easier buying this year’s hottest toy for a niece or nephew, it’ll definitely be more special to gift them a hand-picked, uniquely designed toy made by local or semi-local artisans.
It’s difficult to overstate the ease of buying from large corporations like Amazon or Walmart, but this year we’re facing supply shortages, shipping delays, and possible price gouging. The best remedy is to shop local and shop small—small businesses really prioritize their customers and the quality of their products. When you buy from a business like this, not only are you able to pick out a one-of-a-kind gift, but you’re also investing in this business and, by extension, your community as a whole.
Local Recommendations
Here at Total Mortgage, we love showing our support to small businesses! We asked our loan officers to share their favorite local businesses; here’s what they came up with!
