The South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas, starts this weekend. The annual festival of panels, film screenings, parties and exhibitions across technology, film, media, education, comedy and music runs March 8-16.
According to organizers, over 340,000 people visited the festival in 2023. If you’re planning to attend SXSW in Austin this year, here’s what you need to know to get around efficiently and affordably.
What to expect at SXSW
SXSW has some events reserved for attendees and others are free for anyone to attend. The festival doesn’t have a single venue; all sessions and events (official and unofficial) are located in or around downtown Austin, with most of the larger tech-focused sessions at the Convention Center.
Due to its central location, walking is one of the easiest ways to get between sessions, shows, restaurants, coffee shops and Lady Bird Lake trails.
Heavy traffic and road closures can make navigating SXSW by car — and finding parking — challenging. Austin’s public transportation or the free SXSW shuttle route can help visitors avoid the hassle of driving.
Getting from the airport to downtown Austin
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is 7 miles from downtown Austin, offering SXSW attendees numerous options to get to downtown Austin and most hotels.
Rental car
For longer stays before or after SXSW, a rental car is a good option for exploring more of central Texas. The Austin airport hosts most major rental car companies on site, but Enterprise is an official partner of SXSW, so it offers deals for festival registrants.
Rideshare and taxis
If you’re not renting a car, you can use rideshare services or traditional cab companies to get to the airport. The Austin airport has a designated rideshare and taxi pickup zone across from the terminal, behind the Red Garage.
SXSW attendees can also use a special link to get a discounted shared ride from Carter Transportation Austin, which is part of the SuperShuttle network.
Bus
The MetroAirport Flyer is a convenient public transportation option to get to and from the Austin airport. Austin’s CapMetro Route 20 can get you from AUS to downtown in about 35 minutes. Buses run every 15 minutes from the neon guitar-shaped bus stopand cost $1.25 per ride or $2.50 for a day pass.
SXSW Austin transportation options
From downtown Austin, SXSW attendees without a rental car have plenty of alternate transportation options to venues.
SXSW shuttle
Attendees have access to a free SXSW shuttle service to get from the Convention Center to most venues. The shuttle departs from Trinity Street and runs from 9 a.m. to 2 or 2:30 a.m. most nights.
CapMetro bus and rail
Public transportation is another convenient and affordable option for Austin visitors.
As far as bus routes, CapMetro Rapid routes 801 and 803 will operate with high frequency for the duration of SXSW. Night Owl Routes will run regular service from midnight to 3 a.m. as well to help shuttle people from late-night events. A CapMetro Bus fare is $1.25 for a single ride, $2.50 for a day pass or $11.25 for a seven-day pass.
The CapMetro rail runs to and from downtown Austin, with a stop near the Austin Convention Center on East 4th Street. Rail service during SXSW will run extended hours daily until midnight. On Fridays and Saturdays, rail service will be extended to 2:30 a.m. The cost is $3.50 for a single ride, $7 for a day pass or $27.50 for a seven-day pass.
Rideshare and taxis
Uber, Lyft and taxis offer door-to-door convenience during SXSW. However, anticipate longer wait times and surge pricing throughout the week. If you want to book a taxi, zTrip Austin or ATX Co-op Taxi operate in the city.
🤓Nerdy Tip
Certain American Express cardholders and Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders get rideshare benefits that help cut Uber and Lyft costs.
Pedicabs
Licensed pedicabs operate in downtown Austin around 38th Street, Oltorf Street, MoPac and Pleasant Valley Road. They’re easy to hail down during SXSW and offer an eco-friendly way to get around the festival. Pedicab drivers charge a per-block fare or accept tips.
Bikes and electric scooters
Austin’s MetroBike bike-share program is a popular way to get around as well. According to the City of Austin Transportation and Public Works Department, there are currently more than 80 stations and 800 bicycles. About 43% of the bikes are electric, which makes pedaling even easier. There’s a pay-as-you-ride option, as well as a $13 Explorer day pass and a $20 three-day Weekender pass.
Electric scooter use also spikes during SXSW. Ride Report, a company that tracks mobility, reported 14,000 scooter rides in a single day during SXSW last year. The average number of rides per day in the first quarter of 2023 was 6,800.
Austin visitors can use Bird, Lime or Link to rent electric scooters on a pay-as-you-ride basis.
Saving on SXSW transportation
Traveling by car might be the slower and least cost-effective way to get around Austin during SXSW. To save time and money, festival attendees will want to consider taking free shuttles, public transportation or walking.

It’s not uncommon to hear the words “apartment building” and “apartment community” used interchangeably for this type of dwelling unit. In this article, we’ll look at the difference and explore the features that make up an apartment complex.
What is an apartment building?
An apartment building is a complex full of apartment residences. It’s simply the physical structure built by property developers.
Apartment buildings are more than simply homes, though. They contain many important rooms and features that are essential to running the complex.
What are the features of an apartment building?
When you move to a new apartment, you’ll have to get to know your neighbors and the apartment community you’re joining. Here’s what you can expect to see at a typical apartment complex or building.
Leasing office
The leasing office is where the administrative tasks happen. It’s the office that your property manager works in and where you can find leases, maintenance requests and other important documents. The leasing office is also where a resident can go if they have any issues with rent or are in need of other services surrounding living units.
Stairwell
If your apartment building has more than one floor, the building will have a stairwell to get to the ground level. These stairwells are typically located along the edge of the building, at the end of the hall. Buildings will also have elevators as an accommodation for those who cannot use the stairwells in apartments.
Curbs
The curbs surrounding apartment buildings should be well maintained and not coming apart. These will create space between the sidewalk and the road, so you can walk safely.
When you’re parking, be sure to look at the color of the curb. Concrete curbs painted red or yellow are often no-parking zones.
Street lights
Apartment complexes contain many street lamps that come on at night. This way, you can safely walk from your car to your apartment building.
Parking spaces
Apartment buildings usually have designated parking for residents and guests. If you are assigned a parking spot, it will likely have a number painted on the space so it’s easy for you to find. Apartments in major cities or urban areas usually charge an additional fee for parking.
Every apartment building will also have a few handicapped parking spaces near the complex. Parking in these spots requires a handicapped parking plaque or license plate. These spots are reserved for people who have mobility difficulties.
Patios and balconies
Patios are attached to ground-floor apartment buildings. Usually, they’re a concrete slab on which you can put outdoor furniture and plants.
If you live on an upper level, you might have a balcony which gives you some outdoor space. Even if your patio or balcony is very small, there are ways to decorate it so that you can relax and enjoy some fresh air on a nice evening.
Dumpster
The dumpster is where people who live in the apartment buildings can drop off their bagged garbage.
Dog waste bags
If your apartment allows for pets, they may provide dog waste bags. These bags are for your pet’s waste when you take them outside and put the trash in the dumpster when you’re finished.
Key card
Your key card is an electronic card that will unlock many of the common rooms and entrances of the apartment building. Examples include the security gate and fitness center. These are only issued to residents and staff and are a part of the building design to keep residents safe.
Electronic gate
The electronic gate is located at the entrance of the parking lot. These are in place for your security so only people allowed to come to the apartment can enter.
What is an apartment community?
While an apartment building provides you with a place to live, an apartment community makes it feel like home. A community is alive. It’s the residents, pets, guests and staff that live and work in the complex. They’re the friends you’ll make from down the hall and the property manager who maintains your apartment building and unit. They’re the reason you’re glad you rented there instead of somewhere else.
What are the features of an apartment community?
Apartment amenities, in a residential property that encourage people to interact, will make it easier for you to get to know your neighbors and feel like part of the community. If you’re looking to live in a socially active neighborhood, look for an apartment that has some of the following features and amenities that add value to resident life.
Swimming pool
An apartment building’s swimming pool often becomes a community gathering space. In warmer climates, it can be an especially great place to hang out on a warm day.
Fitness center
Many apartment buildings include a fitness center as an amenity, although some charge a monthly fee to use the equipment. The fitness room is for residents only and requires a key card to get in. They include things like free weights, treadmills, ellipticals and stationary bicycles.
Instead of paying for a monthly gym membership and spending time driving to the gym, you can exercise in your apartment building and perhaps get to know some of your neighbors.
Clubhouse
This is a common room in upscale apartment complexes. It will likely have a TV, a small kitchen, tables, chairs and possibly some game tables like pool or darts. Often, the property manager will allow a tenant to rent this room out for parties or special events.
Community lounge
This may be the same thing as the clubhouse. It’s a common area that’s large enough for a group to meet and relax. Some lounges have Wi-Fi and workspaces.
Pet-friendly spaces
Some apartments have designated lawn spaces for dogs and their owners to play. Apartments that offer pet-friendly housing tend to attract pet owners.
It’s easy to find some common ground with other dog lovers, so if you have a playful dog, look for a pet-friendly apartment. Some apartments will even host pet-friendly events in these designated areas, making it a great social activity for tenants (and their furry friends)!
Find an apartment building and community to suit your personality
All apartment buildings have different amenities and newer apartment listings are adding some cool modern spaces to woo new tenants and enhance resident life.
While modern features are great, to make new friends and become a part of the community, it’s important to spend some time talking to the residents before signing a lease.
Find your next apartment community here!
No matter where you’re looking to live, the perfect place awaits, where you can find a community to live, work and play as one of the perks that come with apartment living. Start with our extensive listing of apartment buildings and communities here.

Living in New York City is expensive in every facet of life. Not only is it the most expensive U.S. city overall, but with an average of $6,499 a month for a two-bedroom unit, it has the most expensive apartments in the nation, as well.
Some people just have their hearts set on fancy, expensive apartments in Manhattan with every convenience and amenity imaginable. But there is an elite group of renters who are on the hunt for the most expensive apartment. And that honor goes to a three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath penthouse in Chelsea that will run you nearly 16 grand a month.
Meet Penthouse D at the Beatrice Apartments in Midtown, the most expensive apartment in New York City. Here’s what makes this grand “ultimate space for comfort, luxury and leisure” 54 stories above Manhattan worth so much.
The perfectly convenient Midtown South neighborhood
The Beatrice Apartments could not be more convenient. The building is located at the corner of 29th Street and Sixth Avenue. The complex is set inside the 12-square-block swath where the North Chelsea neighborhood overlaps Midtown South. Other Midtown neighborhoods, including the Garment District, NoMad, Koreatown, Flatiron and Rose Hill, are all steps away.
Nearly everything you could desire is just a short walk away. Every variety of restaurant, boutique, café, bodega and bar is nearby. Greeley Square Park is just two blocks away and Madison Square Park is four. The Empire State Building is a four-minute walk, and the Theater District and Times Square are just 15.
The building’s block rates a perfect Transit Score of 100, a “Rider’s Paradise.” Stops for the 1, 2, 3, B, D, F, M, N, Q, R and W subways and PATH trains are within a few-minute walk. And Penn Station is just four short blocks away for access to Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit.
In addition, the location earns a Walk Score of 99, a “Walker’s Paradise,” and a “Very Bikeable” Bike Score of 84. And the property charges no broker fee.
A deluxe apartment in the sky with stunning views
The most expensive listed apartment in New York City is Penthouse D, one of the building’s four penthouses. It occupies the southeast quadrant of the building’s top floor, the 53rd just under the rooftop lounge. The unit features wall-to-wall floor-to-ceiling windows above 6th Avenue, which is officially Avenue of the Americas. The spot offers direct views of the Empire State Building. But if interest in seeing out over Brooklyn and Long Island wanes, the entire unit offers blackout shades.
The three-bedroom and three-and-a-half bath unit stretches over 1,673 square feet in total. Its 10-foot ceilings hover over oak hardwood and porcelain tile floors. Every room has heat and air conditioning with its own controls.
The master suite features a 14-by-18 foot bedroom, a massive walk-in closet and two linen closets. The master bath offers a separate stand-up glass shower and soaking tub and a double-sink vanity. Both the 11-by-12 foot second bedroom and 12-by-12 foot third bedroom feature reach-in closets and their own full en suite bathrooms. All three bedrooms have eastern views out towards the Empire State Building.
The compact kitchen includes high-end stainless steel appliances from Sub-Zero, Viking and Miele and Italian marble and granite countertops. The kitchen island looks out over the spacious 21-by-21 foot living and dining area. And across from the second bedroom is a half bath.
Exclusive facilities 50 stories above New York
The “sleek, sophisticated and ultra-luxurious” Beatrice Apartments occupy 29 floors of a much taller building. The Beatrice begins on the 24th floor of the 54-story building, with the remainder occupied by the posh Kimpton Hotel Eventi. In all, the 620,000-square-foot building, completed in 2010, tops out at 614 feet in architectural height. That makes the structure the 92nd tallest in New York and 375th in the country.
Community facilities include a private catering kitchen, conference meeting room and fitness center with Peloton bicycles and a yoga studio. But the most prominent amenity is the Beatrice’s exclusive Cloud Lounge on the 54th-floor rooftop just one floor up from the apartment. The combined indoor/outdoor space is perfect for personal or party pleasure, with stunning eastern views all the way out to Brooklyn. Relax on the terrace, or play in the recreation lounge with two 60″ LCD televisions and a Brunswick billiards table.
The entire apartment building is fully pet-friendly and smoke-free. It offers 24-hour staff, including an around-the-clock concierge desk. Services include in-house valet dry cleaning and monthly parking. And the staff host annual Independence Day and winter holiday parties for residents and guests.
What else you could get for that money
Even for a jaded New Yorker, spending nearly $16,000 a month on a Manhattan apartment is a little crazy. But how do you put that kind of expense into perspective? Here are a few other things you can buy each month for the price of this penthouse at the Beatrice.
5,814 rides on the MTA subway
89 pairs of Vagabond shoes that are longing to stray
Thirty pounds of USDA Prime dry-aged strip steak from Peter Luger’s Steak House
139 tickets to see the New York Giants, but 170 tickets to see the New York Jets who play at the same stadium
Ten medium-sized Louis Vuitton handbags from Saks Fifth Avenue, or 320 knockoff medium-sized Louis Vuitton handbags from a table at the corner of Broadway and Canal
More affordable but still expensive units
Make no mistake, even a lousy apartment in New York City will still cost you a pretty penny. But if money is no object, what is one to do if you wish to live in the lap of luxury but this penthouse just isn’t your cup of high tea? Here are five other pricey Manhattan apartments that are slightly more affordable.
170 Amsterdam, 170 Amsterdam Ave. (Lincoln Square): $15,352 for three bedrooms
Prism at Park Avenue South, 50 E. 28th St.(Rose Hill): $10,480 for two bedrooms
West 96th, 750 Columbus Ave. (Manhattan Valley): $8,482 for two bedrooms
300 East 39th, 300 E. 39th St. (Murray Hill): $8,021 for two bedrooms
Parc East, 240 E. 27th St. (Kips Bay): $7,500 for two bedrooms
Enjoy it if you can afford it
Living in a swank penthouse apartment in Chelsea is the stuff of a rom-com or heist movie. That’s what you’d expect from the most expensive apartment in New York City. It’s a pipe dream for New Yorkers not named Icahn or Bloomberg. So, maybe a walk-up in the Village or a brownstone on the Upper West Side are more your speed.
But if your budget is a little less, head on over to rent.com and find a slew of apartments in Manhattan or elsewhere in New York that won’t break the bank.

Travelpayouts Review
What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a way of advertising where a company pays a content creator when they help bring people to the company’s website and those people make a purchase.
This happens through a tool with a referral marker (link, widget or banner) given to the content creator. When someone clicks on that tool and buys something from the company’s site, the content creator gets a percentage of the sale. It’s like a reward for helping the company get more customers.
For example, a travel blogger might share a link to a guided tour that they did while in Asia, a hotel that they loved in Europe, or a flight deal that they found. If a reader of theirs signs up through their referral link, banner, or widget, then the travel content creator will receive income for referring their reader to the travel company.
Affiliate marketing is liked in travel content because it helps companies like tour operators, flight booking sites, and hotel booking sites get their message and ads out to more people. They only have to pay when they actually get more business from it, so it’s a way for them to make sure their money is being well spent.
What is Travelpayouts?
Travelpayouts is an affiliate network for travel bloggers and content creators. They connect popular travel affiliate programs with content creators.
For example, you can promote activity package tours such as on Viator, hotel booking sites such as Booking.com, and more.
This site helps creators make money and grow their blog without spending too much time on it. With Travelpayouts, creators can turn their hobby into a successful business that they love. It’s trusted by around 500,000 top creators and well-known travel companies.
Travelpayouts has paid out over $59,000,000 since it began 11 years ago.
This site is trusted by 100+ major travel companies, such as Bооking, Viator, Expedia, Trivago, and GetYourGuide.
Other benefits of Travelpayouts include:
Transparent reward rates. With Travelpayouts, you’ll have clear information about where your earnings are coming from and you’ll also know what rewards to expect. This transparency helps you stay informed and make the most out of what you choose to work on.
Easier to meet the threshold. The money you make from different affiliates gets combined, so it’s easier to make the minimum payment amount and collect payouts.
Responsive and helpful support. The Travelpayouts’ support team is really helpful and they’re available every day, even on weekends, and they respond within 24 hours. They take the time to understand and fix any problems or worries you might have. They always aim to make your experience with them positive and enjoyable.
Helpful tools and dashboard. Travelpayouts has nine tools for affiliates, and they’re more than just links. They include things like easy-to-use templates for making your own travel apps without needing to know how to code. There are also interactive widgets to make your content more engaging. It’s a whole set of resources to help you succeed!
How does Travelpayouts work?
Travelpayouts is easy!
Here’s how Travelpayouts works:
Content creators share the travel brands they like with their followers and get paid for it. For example, a travel blogger might talk about a fun GetYourGuide adventure and include an affiliate link for their followers to book it.
Travelers book perfect trips at the best price and explore fascinating places, both near and far.
Travel companies work with travel bloggers and content creators to reach more people and sell more of their services. It’s a way for them to connect with a wider audience and boost their sales.
How much can content creators earn with Travelpayouts?
The amount of money that you can make as a content creator depends on many different things.
I know many bloggers who earn a full-time income with their blog, and a travel blog has many options for what they can promote.
The amount of money that you can make depends on how many people on your website are interested in booking things like flights, hotels, and car rentals. So, the more people who book, the more money that you can earn!
For example, partners with Travelpayouts usually make around $15 for each hotel booking, around $6 for each flight booked through WayAway, and about $23 for each car rental booked with Discover Cars, and so on. This means your earnings are directly linked to the number of sales you generate. The more you sell, the more you can possibly make!
Plus, your cookie lifetime is 30 days long, so as long as someone clicks and books through your link within 30 days, you will receive an affiliate commission.
As a Travelpayouts affiliate, you can also get your earnings through a bank transfer or PayPal. The smallest amount you can withdraw depends on how you choose to receive the payment, starting at $10 (this is your payout threshold). The good news is, Travelpayouts takes care of all the fees associated with the payment transfer too.
How can content creators track their sales?
To make sure a travel company knows which partner is responsible for a sale and can pay them correctly, affiliate marketing uses different tools.
Travelpayouts uses a range of tools for partners with various levels of programming skills and for different types of projects like social media pages, websites, blogs, and more. This way, partners have the right tools to track their success and get their well-deserved rewards.
For example, they provide no-code tools, such as deep links (with a built-in link shortener), banners, and widgets. There are also tools for those who are better at coding, like White Labels, API, Travel App (a template for creating mobile travel apps), and many others.

Are you ready to create your very own DIY shed without breaking the bank? Whether you’re in sunny Orlando, FL, dealing with the winds in Oklahoma City, OK, or facing the seasons in Rochester, NY, this step-by-step guide is here to help you construct a shed that perfectly suits your needs and location. We’ve got you covered with various shed models, ensuring your build is a success, no matter where you are, while fitting your lifestyle.
How to build a DIY shed on a budget
From planning and design to installing doors and windows, here are the essential elements to ensure a successful and cost-effective shed-building journey.
1. Planning and design
Proper planning and design are crucial when building a DIY shed on a budget. Start by assessing your specific needs for the shed, whether it’s extra storage space, a workshop, or a place to pursue hobbies. By clearly defining its purpose, you can determine the ideal size and layout to minimize unnecessary expenses. Sketch out the shed’s design, considering practical aspects like door and window placements to ensure adequate light and ventilation. It’s essential to plan for cost-effective construction methods, such as simple roof designs and standard dimensions, to reduce material waste and expenses.
When planning cost-effective construction, opt for straightforward shed designs that don’t require complex angles or special tools. A rectangular or square shape with a single-pitched roof is not only easier to build but also more budget-friendly. Moreover, think about incorporating salvaged materials like old doors, windows, or reclaimed lumber into your design. Reusing materials can significantly cut costs while adding a unique touch to your shed.
For those looking for an even simpler and more budget-conscious option, DIY shed kits are worth considering. Shed kits typically include pre-cut and pre-measured materials, along with detailed instructions, making the construction process more accessible for beginners. These kits often come in various sizes and styles, allowing you to choose one that fits your needs and budget. While DIY shed kits may have a slightly higher upfront cost, they can save you time and labor, ultimately translating into potential cost savings.
Additional Tip: Before purchasing any materials or starting construction, check with local authorities about building permits and regulations. Compliance with local codes is essential to avoid potential fines or setbacks during the construction process.
2. Acquiring materials
Consider using pressure-treated lumber, which is durable and resistant to decay, at a lower price point than premium lumber. Reclaimed or salvaged materials can be excellent options for siding, roofing, and finishing touches, adding character to your shed while reducing expenses. Explore local classifieds, online marketplaces, or salvage yards to find discounted or secondhand building supplies. Additionally, reaching out to friends, family, or local community groups might lead you to unused materials they’re willing to part with. Being resourceful in sourcing materials can significantly contribute to cost savings.
Here is a checklist of basic tools needed for shed construction:
Measuring tape and level for precise measurements
Circular saw or hand saw for cutting lumber
Power drill with various bits for drilling holes and driving screws
Hammer and nails for traditional fastening
Screwdriver for assembling components
Safety equipment (gloves, safety glasses, ear protection) for protection during construction
Ladder for reaching higher areas during the build
Carpenter’s square for ensuring accurate angles
By having these essential tools on hand, you’ll be well-equipped to handle the construction efficiently and avoid costly delays or trips to the hardware store for missing items.
3. Preparing the site
Begin by selecting a level area with good drainage to prevent water accumulation around the shed. Clear the site of any debris, rocks, or vegetation that may interfere with construction. If the ground is uneven, consider using a shovel or a rented plate compactor to level the surface. Installing a base or foundation is essential for elevating the shed above the ground to protect it from moisture. For budget-friendly options, consider using a gravel or concrete block base, which requires less material and labor compared to a full concrete slab. Make sure to follow local building codes and regulations regarding setbacks and property lines.
Before construction, it’s a good idea to check the local utility lines and mark their location to avoid accidental damage during digging. Additionally, consider adding a layer of landscaping fabric beneath the foundation to prevent weed growth and improve drainage. If the site is susceptible to heavy rainfall or flooding, you might also consider building a raised platform or using pressure-treated lumber for the foundation to protect the shed from moisture. Proper site preparation will not only provide a stable base for the shed, but also prevent potential problems and costly repairs in the future.
4. Building the foundation
Depending on your budget and site conditions, there are several cost-effective options available. One of the simplest and budget-friendly choices is using concrete blocks or pressure-treated lumber as piers, which elevate the shed off the ground and prevent direct contact with soil and moisture. Another budget-friendly option is a gravel foundation, consisting of compacted gravel or crushed stone, which provides good drainage and stability. Follow the shed’s design and local building codes to determine the number and placement of piers or gravel pads. Once the foundation is in place, double-check its levelness and stability before proceeding to the next steps.
Consider adding cross-bracing or additional support beams to enhance the stability of the foundation, especially if your area experiences high winds or seismic activity. When using concrete blocks as piers, ensure they are level and evenly spaced to evenly distribute the shed’s weight. For gravel foundations, it’s crucial to create a stable and well-compacted base to prevent sinking or shifting over time.
5. Constructing the frame
The frame is the backbone of your shed, providing structural support and determining the shed’s overall strength. Use pressure-treated lumber or other cost-effective materials for framing components, such as joists, studs, and beams. The frame should follow the shed’s design and dimensions accurately, and all connections must be secure. Precisely cut the lumber according to your measurements and join the components using nails, screws, or appropriate hardware. Ensure the frame is square and level to avoid any structural issues down the line.
If you’re new to carpentry, take extra care when measuring and cutting the lumber to ensure accurate dimensions. Utilize a carpenter’s square to check for right angles, and consider using diagonal measurements to verify the frame’s squareness. Additionally, using galvanized or weather-resistant fasteners will enhance the frame’s durability and protect it from rust or corrosion.
6. Installing roofing and siding
When it comes to roofing and siding options for a budget-friendly shed, consider materials that offer durability without breaking the bank. Asphalt shingles are a cost-effective roofing choice, providing adequate protection against the elements. Metal roofing is another affordable option that offers longevity and easy installation. For siding, T1-11 plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) are economical choices that can be painted or stained for added protection and aesthetics. Alternatively, consider using salvaged materials or repurposed wood to create a rustic and budget-friendly exterior. Properly install the roofing and siding, paying attention to weather-proofing and sealing to ensure the shed remains dry and resistant to moisture.
To maximize cost savings, consider using a combination of new and salvaged materials for roofing and siding. Check local salvage yards or building material recycling centers for discounted or reclaimed materials that can be suitable for your shed. Additionally, apply weather-resistant barriers like roofing felt or house wrap beneath the roofing and siding to further protect the shed from moisture and drafts.
7. Adding doors and windows
Consider cost-effective options for doors, such as pre-hung exterior doors or repurposed doors from other projects. For windows, single-pane or salvaged windows can be more budget-friendly than high-end, energy-efficient models. Install weather stripping and proper sealing around doors and windows to minimize air leakage and improve energy efficiency. Additionally, consider positioning the doors and windows strategically to maximize natural light and ventilation within the shed.
If using salvaged doors or windows, ensure they are in good condition and provide adequate security and insulation for the shed. Applying a fresh coat of paint or stain can revitalize their appearance and extend their lifespan. For added security, consider installing simple and budget-friendly locking mechanisms or latches on doors and windows.
8. Finishing touches and interior
Install trim and moldings to cover any exposed edges and add a polished look. Apply a weather-resistant paint or stain to protect the exterior from the elements and prevent premature deterioration. Consider using leftover or salvaged materials for interior finishes, such as reclaimed wood for shelving or repurposed cabinets for storage. Organize the interior to maximize space and functionality, adding hooks, pegboards, or wall-mounted racks to keep tools and equipment neatly stored. Adding proper lighting, either through natural light from windows or affordable LED lighting fixtures, ensures a well-lit and functional workspace.
To further save on costs, explore creative DIY solutions for shelving and storage. Utilize old crates, pallets, or cinder blocks to create custom storage units. Additionally, consider using recycled materials or inexpensive alternatives for flooring, such as gravel or rubber mats, to create a comfortable and budget-friendly surface.
9. Safety and security
Regularly inspect the shed for any structural issues, such as loose nails or rotting wood, and address them promptly to prevent further damage. If your area experiences extreme weather, consider adding hurricane straps or anchors to reinforce the shed’s stability. Install a budget-friendly lock or latch on doors and windows to deter potential intruders and safeguard your belongings. In regions prone to pests, use weather stripping and sealant to close any gaps and prevent entry.
Incorporate additional safety measures such as smoke alarms or fire extinguishers, especially if you plan to use the shed for activities involving heat or flammable materials. If you have electrical outlets or wiring in the shed, ensure they are installed correctly and up to code to prevent potential fire hazards.
Types of sheds
Here are a few examples of the different types of sheds and their purposes.
1. Storage shed
The primary function of a storage shed is to provide ample space for storing various items, such as gardening tools, lawn equipment, bicycles, and seasonal decorations. Storage sheds typically have a simple design with single or double doors for easy access. They may include shelving, hooks, or pegboards for organizing and maximizing storage capacity.
2. Garden shed
A garden shed serves as a dedicated space for gardening activities, such as potting plants, storing gardening tools, and housing supplies like soil and fertilizers. Garden sheds often have workbenches or planting tables to facilitate potting and transplanting. They may also include windows or skylights to provide natural light for gardening tasks.
3. Workshop shed
Workshop sheds are designed as functional spaces for DIY projects, woodworking, or hobbies that require a dedicated workspace. Workshop sheds have sturdy workbenches or workstations with ample storage for tools and materials. They may have multiple electrical outlets and good lighting to support various projects.
4. Home office shed
Home office sheds provide a quiet and separate workspace away from the distractions of the main house, making them ideal for remote work or personal projects. Home office sheds are insulated and climate-controlled, with windows for natural light and ventilation. They often have space for a desk, chair, storage, and electrical outlets for electronic devices.
5. She shed
A she shed is a retreat space designed for relaxation, hobbies, or personal escape, providing a peaceful and private environment. She sheds are customizable and can include cozy seating, bookshelves, art supplies, or a mini-fridge for refreshments. The decor and furnishings are tailored to the owner’s preferences and interests.

This section provides helpful tips on creating a Cash App card design that is uniquely yours.
Use these suggestions as a starting point and let your creativity shine through. R
1. Simplicity is Key
When designing your Cash App card, simplicity is your best friend.
A minimalist design using a simple color palette and clean lines can create sophistication and style. Too much information? It just makes things difficult to read.
Try these tips:
Start by choosing a design that’s easy to read.
Go for a solid color background with your impactful saying in a clean font.
Don’t cram too much onto your card.
Get creative with basic shapes or perhaps, draw a scene from your favorite movie with a stylus.
But remember, keep it simple.
2. Consider Your Personal Style and Interests
Designing your Cash App card is an opportunity to truly make it your own by considering your personal style and interests during the design process.
Is there a hobby you are passionate about?
Maybe you love reading, gaming, painting or even knitting.
Get creative, perhaps with a self-portrait or graffiti of your initials
Pick or draw a design that reflects you
Remember, this is your chance to showcase YOU on your card. Have fun with it!
3. Think About the Types of Transactions You Will Be Making
If you are currently striving towards a money goal, this is a great chance to use your spending card to get you there.
Your personalized Cash App card design will greatly enhance your user probability of racing your goals.
While a little creativity with your Cash App Card design, you want to make sure you stay without your budget.
4. Make sure it is easy to read
Simple – you don’t want a cluttered card that’s hard on the eyes.
Here’s how to ensure yours pops while remaining legible:
Opt for a straightforward design. Busy doesn’t equate to cool.
Choose a clean font. Messy typefaces smack of unprofessionalism.
Balance your color scheme. Overly bright or dark? Nah, we’re seeking a middle ground here.
Consider a stylus for freehand designs – it aids precision.
Keep it simple, keep it clean.
5. Don’t overcomplicate things
Overly complex or crammed designs make it difficult to comprehend.
Aim for a clean, minimalist vibe – it’s trendy and effective.
Remember, the last thing you want is a card you can’t read or love to use!

Right off the shore of Oahu island, Honolulu‘s skyline rises along the water. From crystal clear beaches to great hiking on Diamond Head and surfing on the North Shore, Hawaii is truly a paradise.
Honolulu is Hawaii’s business and cultural center, as well as the home to the Pearl Harbor naval base. Beyond tourism, Honolulu’s major employers are in the banking and transportation industries.
But, what if you wanted to live there and have access to that every day?
In 2020, Kiplinger found Honolulu one of the top 20 most expensive cities in the U.S. Honolulu’s cost of living is higher than most due to the city and state having to import goods from other places via boat or by plane.
When compared to the national cost of living rate, Honolulu clocks at 92.7 percent higher than the national average. That’s five percent higher than in 2021.
Still thinking of making Hawaii’s capital your home? Here’s a glimpse at the cost of living in Honolulu.
Honolulu housing prices
These days, as rent prices continue to skyrocket, housing costs are the first thing you should look for as a prospective resident. Monthly rent cost is one of the main lines of your budget — in theory, you shouldn’t spend more than 30 percent of your income on rent. In Honolulu, housing prices are 220.7 percent above the national average as of 2022.
The average rent in Honolulu for a one-bedroom apartment is $3,085 per month, a 29 percent increase from 2021. A two-bedroom costs $4,890 per month on average, a 188 percent year-over-year increase.
You’ll find the highest one-bedroom rents in Waikiki, home to Honolulu’s nightlife, high-end shopping and surf beach. If you move inland to Palolo, you’ll find more affordable one-bedroom rents at $1,600 per month on average, only four miles from downtown Honolulu.
Average rent prices in cities near Honolulu
If the hustle of downtown Honolulu is not for you, there are options across the island for more affordable housing in quieter neighborhoods. These neighborhoods’ rent prices have remained relatively stable in the past year.
Here are a few examples of the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in cities near Honolulu:
Home prices in Honolulu
Just like across the mainland U.S., Honolulu is no stranger to a hot housing market and low inventory. After all, an island has only so many options for housing.
The current median home price in Honolulu is $565,000, an increase of nearly 11 percent over the past year. Homes are currently selling for about two percent above the list price, according to Redfin, and go pending in just 32 days with multiple offers.
However, when you look closely at the housing market, the median sale price for a single-family home in Honolulu is $1.3 million, while a condo falls into the $507,500 range.
Honolulu food prices
Living near the ocean has its perks. Honolulu boasts fresh seafood, delicious fruits and vegetables grown locally. Local dining is also influenced by Japanese culture and local Indigenous groups. Poke, spam and pork are the most popular dishes you’ll see.
You’ll find fine dining restaurants in resorts that cater to tourists, as well as food trucks and stands with delicious food for a more casual experience. Dining out for two people averages between $18 and $87.50 per person, depending on the restaurant.
You’ll find local breweries like Hana Koa Brewing Co. and Stewbum & Stonewall Brewing Co. serving cold pints.
For those looking to eat at home, groceries are 52.7 percent above the U.S. average in 2022. While some produce is grown on the island, most basic items come from the mainland U.S. or elsewhere in the world. Grocery food decreased five percent since 2021.
A steak at the grocery store will cost $19.39 and other foods like eggs ($3.97), milk ($4.05), potatoes ($9.17) and bread ($5.07) also are above the national average.
Staying on a budget is difficult in Honolulu, but a good balance between dining out and groceries can help.
Honolulu utility prices
Hawaii’s mild weather helps when it comes to heating or cooling your home. The average temperature in the hottest month in Hawaii is 88 degrees Fahrenheit and the lowest is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Nothing a fan and an open window with a sea breeze can’t fix.
This is a good thing since utilities cost 44.6 percent above the national average in Honolulu. While renewable energy is growing on the island, it’s still expensive to power up the city. An average electric bill can cost $318 per month.
Phone bills average around $182.61, on par with most U.S. cities.
Honolulu transportation prices
After rent prices, transportation is the second factor you should take into consideration. Distance to work, friends and family and favorite restaurants can make all the difference, especially as transportation costs get higher.
Transportation costs in Honolulu are 24.2 percent higher than the U.S. average (six percent lower than in 2021). While a car is always more convenient, gasoline prices have increased in the past year to $4.29 a gallon.
Also, when thinking about a car, you have also take maintenance into consideration. Car maintenance like a tire balance costs $61.60, higher than the national average. Parking in Honolulu is expensive, $4.50 per hour on average except for Sundays and holidays.
Luckily, Honolulu offers other methods of transportation, including the bus, scooters and even bicycles. The city has a 60 bike score, with bike lanes throughout. The walking score for Honolulu is 74, depending on the neighborhood.
For public transit, the HOLO bus costs $3 for a single ride, anywhere on Oahu island. You can pick them up at 7-Eleven or any supermarket on the island. A monthly pass is $80 for an adult, while a day pass costs $7.50 per adult.
Of course, taxis and ride-sharing apps are available but are more expensive. Just make sure that you’re near one of these options when looking at apartments in your budget.
Honolulu healthcare prices
Healthcare costs will depend on the individual and whether they have insurance. And even with insurance, costs will differ. Healthcare is 20 percent higher than the national average in Honolulu.
Going to the eye doctor will cost you around $162.96 per visit and the dentist, around $95.60. Prescription drugs cost around $528.75, while over-the-counter meds like ibuprofen average around $13.47.
Honolulu goods and services prices
Your budget should have items for recreation and household things like haircuts and dry-cleaning. Overall, you’ll pay nearly 30 percent more on goods and services in Honolulu than the national average. An average trip to dry cleaning will cost $23.64.
A haircut will set you back $17.36, while a more involved salon visit (think color, treatment, etc) will cost $73.80. It’s pretty high, especially compared with a West Coast metro like Seattle, where a salon visit is around $57.70.
For a night out, you’ll pay $14.58 for a movie, around $10 for a beer pint with pizza costing $14.99. That’s for one person, the costs can definitely add up.
Taxes in Honolulu
Another big factor you’ll have to take into consideration is taxes, both state income tax and sales tax. These taxes can add a significant burden to your budget unexpectedly.
In Honolulu, sales tax is 4.5 percent (4 percent from the state and 0.5 percent from Honolulu county). So, if you made a $1,000 purchase, you’ll pay an additional $45 in sales tax.
Hawaii’s individual income tax ranges from 1.4 percent to 11 percent, according to the Tax Foundation.
How much do I need to earn to live in Hawaii?

An average one-bedroom in Honolulu goes for $3,150 per month. This means that you’ll spend $37,800 on rent annually.

Lately, I’ve been making rumblings about getting in shape again. I want to get fit slowly. The trick is figuring out how to do it. It took a lot of reading and a lot of trial and error to take control of my finances, but I’ve finally achieved a healthy attitude toward money. Now I hope to do the same with physical fitness. But where to start?
One approach would be to just throw money at the problem. I’ve been looking at fitness clubs, for example; they offer great exercise equipment and motivational classes all in one facility. But they cost more than a frugal fellow like me wants to pay. (Yes, I’ve looked into the YMCA and local community centers — there’s nothing nearby.)
I’ve also been fighting the urge to purchase a new bicycle. The Redline 925 makes me drool, but do I really want to spend $800 on bike? What’s wrong with the bike I already own?
I was heading for a major expenditure if I didn’t formulate a plan, so I sat down and made a list of the free or low-cost fitness alternatives at my disposal. I was surprised to discover how much exercise equipment I already own:
We purchased a NordicTrack ski machine over ten years ago. It has received very little use during its lifetime.
I have a bare-bones weight set that I’m storing for a friend.
Last fall, some neighbors down the street were giving away exercise equipment they no longer used. They gave me a stationary cycle and a “health-rider”, both of which I dragged up the hill to our house. They’ve sat unused in storage ever since.
While working with my wellness coach last spring, I was fitted for (and purchased) a good pair of running shoes.
I own two bicycles. The first is a 1997 Bianchi Volpe touring bike that I purchased ten years ago. I rode it for a couple thousand miles during 1998-1999, but since then it’s been neglected. I’ve also fixed up an old mountain bike that my cousin gave me to use as a “commuter” of sorts. I use it to run errands.
We have a variety of sports equipment: several soccer balls, baseball gloves, golf clubs, racquetball stuff, a frisbee, and a jump-rope.
We own Dance Dance Revolution for the Wii.
I have a good pair of hiking boots and miles of great trails all around.
When I look at the list of fitness equipment I already have, it seems ludicrous to pay money to join a gym. I already have a gym. Sure, I don’t have a treadmill or an elliptical machine or a fancy weight set, but I have plenty to get me started. I’ve already paid for this equipment — I might as well get some use from it!
It also seems crazy to purchase a new bike. I have two bikes! What would I do with a third that I cannot do already? Instead, I pulled my touring bike out of storage. It was in sad shape, so I paid the local bike shop a couple hundred dollars to give it an overhaul. Spending this money hurt, but if it’s enough to get me back on the road to physical fitness, it’s well worth the cost. Good health pays dividends in the long run.
And you know what? It’s fantastic to be back on the road. Over the past week, I’ve put in about 40 miles. That’s not a lot, but it’s a start. It’s like saving your first $40 in an emergency fund. You save a little at a time, and eventually you have $2,000 set aside. By the end of the summer, I hope to have biked 2,000 miles. (Or more!)
I look like the biggest dork in the world. But I’m on my bike!

Oh yeah — I’ve signed up at We Endure, a social training log that lets you track your progress in a variety of endurance sports (such as cycling, running, and swimming). Here’s my profile. I’ve also created a Get Fit Slowly group that you’re welcome to join (even if you don’t read Get Fit Slowly). The more the merrier!
There’s more to banking than low monthly fees, high yield savings, and a large ATM network. More Americans today seek banks and credit unions that align with their values when it comes to sustainability and social responsibility.
The U.S. banking system tends to disregard lower income and rural communities, with traditional banks establishing multiple branches in the country’s largest and wealthiest cities. The most socially responsible banks, on the other hand, provide online banking, low monthly fees, and no minimum deposit requirements, making them accessible to lower income individuals and families. They may also support efforts to help lower income individuals qualify for personal loans, auto loans or mortgages at fair interest rates.
But that’s not all that comes with socially responsible banking. Socially responsible banks emphasize financial literacy for those in their local community. They might also consider their organization a green bank, committed to fighting climate change and avoiding projects that support fossil fuels.

Maybe sustainability is the most significant aspect to finding a socially responsible bank that aligns with your values.
Of course, you also want to think about all the other elements that you would consider for your personal banking needs. These include low fees, online banking capabilities and an intuitive mobile app, early availability of your direct deposits, and a high yield savings account.
Our list of the best socially responsible banks takes all these factors into consideration and showcases banks that back up their values with investments – in their communities and in the environment.
