Public transportation
Although Nob Hill is easily walkable and many residents choose to walk or bike around, there is still great mass transit available.
TriMet bus Line 15 offers a straight shot down NW 23rd. Another convenient transit option is the Portland Streetcar, whose North/South Loop connects the north end of Nob Hill to Downtown.
Walking or using mass transit are also the main ways of getting around as finding parking is difficult. I-405 is also just a few blocks off Nob Hill, connecting to I-5 toward Seattle or heading south into central Oregon.
Education
Many young people choose Nob Hill for the happening lifestyle. But the peaceful neighborhoods and large Craftsman-style homes are great for families, and there are some highly-rated schools in the area. Chapman Elementary School and the Metropolitan Learning Center are well-regarded, as well as Lincoln High School.
Safety
Overall, Nob Hill is a very safe neighborhood.
Both local forums and third-party reviewers rank it as a safe place, with violent crimes like assault ranking incredibly low or nonexistent. There are some issues with theft and burglary, which is an issue many parts of Portland have been grappling with. But overall, residents report feeling safe and secure.
Recreation
Nob Hill is a fantastic area if you enjoy spending time outdoors. There are several clean and lush city parks nearby like Wallace Park, where you can exercise, walk your dog or relax. And Forest Park, which has tons of trails, is easily accessible via Lower Macleay Park.

Lucky for you, this country features culinary gems from coast to coast. Think you know the best foodie cities in the U.S.? See if your projections match up with our top 10 list.
What makes a great foodie city?
Any serious epicure prioritizes restaurant choice and variety of cuisine on their wish list of where to live. Good news: You no longer have to guess if the city you’re considering calling home is actually one of the best foodie cities in America. We’ve done the math for you.
So what makes these the best foodie cities in the country? Restaurant options, and plenty of them. We looked at no fewer than 104 different cuisines to see how many different choices exist in any given city.
Whether you’re hungry for falafel, pho or fried chicken, the higher the city on the list, the better the chance that you’ll never meet a craving that isn’t satisfied.
But first, a quick housekeeping note. Yes, we realize that there are three No. 9s in our “Top 10″ list below, and 11 total entries. There was an unprecedented three-way tie for the No. 10 spot just to keep us on our toes. So let’s start there, with our trio of lucky number nines:
9 (tied). Portland, OR
How do you feel about street food? If you like a good food truck, it’s time to meet Portland‘s “food carts.” These culinary treasure troves stay put (unlike trucks) and organize in “pods” that make it easy — and practically required — to sample flavors from several different spots in one go.
There are no fewer than 500 food carts here, and the food rivals some of the city’s best restaurants. So what do they serve? Everything … truly. From barbecue to Vietnamese, and pretty much everything in between.
Portland’s not just about man buns and mustaches, though you’re bound to see both in a city that’s proud for being called “weird” — along with naked bike rides, vegan strip clubs and all the quirks you can handle. If that sounds like your speed, expect to spend around $1,747 per month for a one-bedroom apartment.
9 (tied). Seattle, WA
When we talk about the food in Seattle, we obviously need to start with the iconic Pike Place Market. From fishmongers and fresh oysters to specialty food shops and spicy noodles, this admittedly touristy place is ground zero for true gourmands. Like the city at large, the century-old market offers a truly tasty variety of straight-up outstanding cuisine. And yes, also flying fish photo ops.
Eat your way around the city and you could start with steaming bowls of pho, savory Chinese pastries or to-die-for smoked salmon — paired with some of the country’s best coffee.
Ready to set down roots and begin the culinary journey of a lifetime? Expect to pay around $2,214 in rent per month for a one-bedroom. Don’t worry, it’s in your budget. The median income here is a healthy $93,481.
9 (tied). Houston, TX
If you think Houston‘s culinary scene starts at brisket and ends with enchiladas, it’s time to broaden your gastronomic horizons. Yes, barbecue and Tex Mex are big here — this is, after all, one of the best cities for meat lovers — but that’s really just the beginning. From Czech kolaches (savory breakfast pastries) to Cajun crawfish, you’ll find diverse flavors to suit your every mood.
If you’re ready to hunker down in H-town, budget a reasonable $1,241 per month for your housing costs. Sure, it can get pretty steamy in these parts, but fret not. You’ll find plenty of crisp salads and frosty ice cream to cool off with here in the Lone Star State.
8. Washington, DC
If there’s one thing that can unite politicos across party lines, it’s good food. And you’ll find plenty of it here in the nation’s capital.
In the mood for Korean fried chicken? D.C.’s got you covered. Feel like cracking into Chesapeake blue crab? You’re in the right place. Oh, you want Michelin stars? Yep, D.C.’s got those, too. Find diverse flavors for any budget that will happily fill you up for years to come. And don’t sweat your waistline. With an impressive walk and bike score, it’s easy to work it all off.
Ready to find a neighborhood that’s just right for you? You’ll find ample options here when it comes to both housing and restaurants. Plan to spend around $2,406 in monthly rent — and as much or as little as your food budget allows for all the amazing flavors the city has to offer.
7. Las Vegas, NV
From all-you-can-eat buffets and tony steakhouses to celebrity chef outposts, you may think you know all there is to know about eating in Vegas. Think again. This desert city’s food scene goes well beyond the Strip, and you could spend a heck of a lot longer than one crazy weekend exploring all of the different flavors that make up this vibrant city.
People have been flocking to the Vegas suburbs in droves over the past few years. Why? In addition to the fantastic culinary scene, there’s no state income tax — not to mention 300 days of sunshine per year. Sound pretty good? Plan to spend around $1,311 a month for rent.
5 (tied). San Diego, CA
What’s not to love about sunny San Diego? Endless sandy beaches, a vibrant downtown and yes, an amazing food scene. All that sunshine powers a bounty of fresh produce, while the sea serves up uber fresh seafood.
From fish tacos and carne asada to wood-fired pizza, Southeast Asian cuisine and fabulous local wine, prepare to wow your palate. And did we mention that Mexico is just 17 miles away? Expect plenty of spillover from all those south of the border flavors.
This tasty bounty does, however, come at a cost. It’s not exactly cheap to live by the coast in California — but it could be worse (looking at you, SF and L.A.!). You’ll pay around $2,402 per month in rent, but expect to pull in a salary just shy of $80K a year.
5 (tied). Philadelphia, PA
The City of Brotherly Love loves cheesesteaks. And hoagies. And Tastykakes…are you getting hungry? Same, yo. Let’s not forget soft pretzels, crab fries and scrapple. OK, you get the picture. How are you going to get anything done when there’s all that good food to sample? At least you can keep moving — Philadelphia boasts excellent walk and bike scores.
If you don’t mind a little snow (ahem, 22 inches a year), and think you can find a healthy balance between indulging your cravings and not overdoing it, perhaps Philly is for you. The price tag? You’ll pay an above-average $2,152 per month in rent for a one-bedroom.
3 (tied). San Francisco, CA
San Francisco has changed a lot over the last decade, thanks to as a wave of tech companies that have pushed housing prices to the upper limit.
However, one crucial factor has remained constant — and probably even improved: the food scene. From crusty sourdough bread to Dungeness crab, the city offers an embarrassment of culinary riches. It’s also the best city in America for local restaurants.
Let’s address the elephant in the room … it costs a lot to live here. Rent is downright astronomical, with a one-bedroom clocking in around $3,560 per month in rent. But there is some good news! For one, rent prices are dropping. A lot.
And then there’s the job market, and the plump paychecks you can expect to cash in on. How plump? The average salary here in the City by the Bay is $112K. Rest assured, there will be plenty of those six figures left in your budget for some truly amazing meals.
3 (tied). Los Angeles, CA
Tied with its NorCal rival, Los Angeles is also the third-best foodie city in America. The culinary gems here run the gamut, from killer fish tacos and carnitas to pupusas, pork belly ramen and salmon sashimi — and, yes, plenty of top chefs and Michelin stars sprinkled into the mix.
You’ll find global eats from around the world throughout these sprawling environs, and there’s nary a flavor craving you can’t trek down.
There’s a lot more to living in Los Angeles than Hollywood and beaches. Namely, the endless neighborhoods in between, each one boasting its own foodie finds from food trucks to fine dining.
Ready to find the LA neighborhood that’s best suited for you? Budget around $2,970 per month for rent.
2. Chicago, IL
Should we start by mentioning deep dish pizza? How could we not, really? Oh, you want to talk about steak? Italian beef sandwiches? The truth is, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Chicago‘s food scene.
There’s a reason Bon Appetit magazine named Chi-town “Best Food City in America” back in 2017. Four years later, it’s only fallen one notch in our top 10. Knowing where to start your culinary adventures is overwhelming, but this is a very good “problem” to have if you tend to let your stomach lead.
If you don’t mind the winters, Chicago’s ready to welcome you with open arms. And for those glorious sunny days, you can’t do much better than the walk and bike scores here — all the better to work off those occasional indulgences. All this flavor is yours if you pay around $2,232 per month in rent.
1. New York, NY
And the best foodie city in the U.S. is … do we even need to say it? No surprise that New York comfortably takes our top slot.
As much as some of the cities in our top five may like to debate it (looking at you, California), no city can beat the Big Apple when it comes to diverse restaurant options that draw foodies from all over the world.
Where else can you find literally whatever you want to eat — at any hour? From classic diner fare to pizza, soft pretzels and five-star cuisine that spans the globe, NYC has it all. In spades.
The city also boasts the highest walk score on our list, just shy of perfect at 99. If there is one drawback, it’s probably the rent prices. A one-bedroom here will cost you around $3,794. But just remember, a one-bedroom in the big city is practically a penthouse when a shoebox studio is an entry-level norm.
The top 50 best food cities in the U.S.
Okay, so there aren’t too many surprises on our top 10 list — we can’t dispute the data. However, we can cast a wider net to highlight the 50 best foodie cities in America (technically 51 because of ties).
And if you’re still searching, take the insider route and check out the country’s best cities for chefs.
The worst foodie cities in America
So, you’re one of those people who have to remind yourself to eat? You don’t care what it tastes like, as long as it fuels your human form? Great. We’ve got a list you may want to take a look at. Funny how fewer restaurant choices seem to correlate with lower rent costs.
Methodology
To find the best foodie cities, we looked through a database of more than 8 million business listings and identified 104 unique dining cuisines. We then looked to see how many dining establishments advertise serving at least one of these cuisines in every city in America with more than 50,000 people according to U.S. Census 2019 population estimates.
We determined the cities with the highest percentage of cuisine coverage to be the best cities for foodies. For instance, if a city has 80 percent coverage, that means diners can find restaurants serving 80 percent of all available cuisines in America.
Business listings may not reflect recent openings and closures.
Rent prices are based on a one-year rolling weighted average from Apartment Guide and Rent.’s multifamily rental property inventory of one-bedroom apartments as of April 2021. Our team uses a weighted average formula that more accurately represents price availability for each individual unit type and reduces the influence of seasonality on rent prices in specific markets.

FAQs: Navigate Your Approach to Cost-Efficient Eats
Eating lunch at work doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune, following these tricks can save you a lot of money:
Meal prep: Plan your meals ahead of time. Invest in a few hours during the weekend or your day off to cook large amounts and portion them out for the week ahead.
Leftovers Are Your Best Friend: Make a bit extra while cooking dinner, and voila, you’ve got lunch for the next day. A yummy, cheap, no-fuss, and no-waste solution!
Pack Your Own Snacks: Trade small shop-bought packs of snacks for a large bag or bulk-buy from a wholesale store. Divide them into small reusable containers for your daily hunger itch.
Invest in a Flask: A good quality thermos flask can keep your homemade soup or stew warm until lunchtime and it’s a lot cheaper than buying soup from a cafe.
Remember, the key is not to take complicated dinners which takes a lot of time. Rather, simple sandwiches, yogurt with fruits, homemade soup even boiled eggs can make great inexpensive lunch options. Planning ahead is key when you’re trying to eat on a budget.
There are several cheap meals you can whip up using budget-friendly ingredients. The absolute cheapest would depend on what you already have on hand in your pantry or the cost of ingredients in your locality.
Rice & Beans: This is a universally cheap and filling meal that can be flavored with some stock, onions, and spices.
Pasta with Tomato Sauce: This is a popular choice when it comes to cheap ideas. All it takes is a rigatoni of your choice, a basic tomato sauce made from canned tomatoes, garlic, and herbs.
Cereal & Milk: A bowl of generic brand cereal and milk is an incredibly cheap meal. It lacks in terms of proteins and fats, but it can be a good quick fix.
Eggs on Toast: Eggs and bread are both cheap elements. Whip up scrambled eggs or make a simple boiled egg sandwich.
Potato Soup: One of the cheapest vegetables around, and they make a filling, simple potato soup.
Homemade Pizza: Using basic homemade dough and simple tomato sauce, you can add anything you have on hand to make a delicious pizza.
Remember, the cheapest dinners typically use basic pantry staples. By having a well-stocked pantry, you’ll be able to whip up a variety of low-cost dinner ideas.
A frugal meal doesn’t equate to scanty or tasteless. Here’s what defines a frugal meal:
Inexpensive Ingredients: Frugal meals predominantly use cheaper ingredients. Find plenty of cheap foods when broke (and you don’t need to be broke).
Fewer Ingredients: Meals with minimal ingredients are typically more economical. They aren’t stuffed with fancy extras, but they make up for it in hearty flavor.
Uses Pantry Staples: Rely on pantry staples like rice, dried pasta, canned goods, and dry baking ingredients.
Repurposes Leftovers: Instead of wasting ingredients incorporate leftovers in innovative ways.
Meal Prep and Batch Cooking: Cooking in bulk and freezing dinners for later can be a massive money saver, reducing waste and reducing the number of ingredients needed overall.
Limited Meat or Vegetarian: As meat is typically one of the more expensive ingredients, frugal cooking is often vegetarian or uses meat sparingly.
While frugal meals won’t always hit all these factors, if they contain a few of these aspects, you can be assured they will provide a cost-effective dining experience. A frugal meal strives to offer nutritional balance, satisfying taste, and minimal impact on your wallet.
Perfecting the Art of Frugal Cooking
Preparing budget-friendly cooking not only saves money but also reduces food waste and can create a warm, comfortable home. This is how to be frugal with food. Here are some expert tips to get you rolling:
Plan Your Meal Calendar: Plan out your menu for the week, keeping in mind what ingredients you already have.
Shop Smart: Shop for groceries with a list in hand so you don’t end up buying unnecessary items. Look out for sales, and discounts, and try to shop in bulk.
Utilize Leftovers: Don’t throw away leftovers. Repurpose them into a new meal or use them as an ingredient in another dish.
Use More Vegetables and Grains: Vegetables and grains are generally cheaper than meat and can be used to bulk out dinners.
Freeze Extras: If you cook in bulk, freeze the extra portions for a later date. This can act as a lifesaver during busy periods.
Use Cheap Cuts of Meat: Cheap cuts, such as chicken thighs, can be just as delicious as expensive ones, especially when slow-cooked.
Cook from Scratch: Convenience foods often cost a lot more than the sum of their parts.
Grow Your Own: If you have a garden, consider growing your own vegetables and herbs.
Reduce Waste: Get creative in the kitchen and use parts of food that you’d otherwise throw away.
Remember, with a bit of planning and creativity, you can prepare delicious, healthful meals without breaking the bank! It’s all about making smart choices.

Walk past the street-facing 1990s duplex and beyond a 1920s Sears Roebuck kit bungalow, and an accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, rises before you at the end of the property. It’s a slim, two-story rental clad in inexpensive white vertical corrugated metal.
Only then do you realize this single Venice lot has four rental units.
With Southern California in desperate need of housing and state and federal laws constantly evolving to make permitting ADUs easier, the detached home by architects Todd Lynch and Mohamed Sharif of Sharif, Lynch: Architecture feels like a harbinger of what’s to come.
“When the city encouraged us to increase housing, I thought of the Venice property,” said owner Ricki Alon, who had previously worked with the architects and builder Moshon Elgrably on another project. “Given the unique site constraints, I didn’t believe they could do it. I was worried it would be too crowded and negatively affect the small guest house.”

Alon was hesitant at first, but after a persuasive Zoom call with the architects, they all agreed that a fourth unit would add value to the bustling community.
“We viewed it as a challenge and a way to transcend ADUs in an SB9 world,” Sharif said, referring to Senate Bill 9, the 2022 state law that allows homeowners to convert their homes into duplexes on a single-family parcel or divide the lot in half to build another duplex for no more than four units.
Alon loved their initial sketches despite her skepticism, and the project moved ahead.
“We decided to go as high as possible,” Sharif said of the eventual design, a slim, two-story ADU built on what was previously a driveway. Slipped into the lot, the 1,200-square-foot ADU, or IDU as the architects like to refer to the infill dwelling unit, was built an inch from the 1920s bungalow, five feet from the duplex and four feet from the property line.
Resting a few feet from a dingbat apartment to the south, the ADU is lifted off the ground to preserve two parking spots in the alley and a swimming pool in front. “Its entire width is dictated by that two-car side-by-side dimension,” said Sharif, who teaches in the undergraduate and graduate design studios at UCLA. Lifting the volume to preserve the pool also created shade and an open space that all residents could share.

“They refused to get rid of it,” Alon said of the water feature. “They insisted on building around it.” Today she admits it was the right decision. “Now, when you walk in, you experience a wonderful, absolutely lovely environment. I’m glad they did not listen to me,” she added with a laugh.

Even though you can’t see the rental from the street, the ADU has enormous curb appeal and a touch of glamour. A Midcentury-style Sputnik pendant light hangs outside the front door, giving it an elegant feel, and the white cladding gives it a distinctive quality from the other rentals, which are clad in orange metal and gray siding.
Up a short flight of stairs, the front door opens to the ground floor and the two-story entry, which features a compact first-floor bedroom, study and en-suite bathroom.
“We wanted every room to have a bathroom to suit roommates,” Sharif said.
Tenant Henry Schober III, a 38-year-old attorney specializing in data privacy, uses the ground floor as his office and a bedroom for out-of-town guests.

“It’s a place that I’m comfortable spending a workday in,” said Schober, who goes to the office once or twice a week. “I don’t feel like I’m trapped in my house.”

Up the stairs to the second floor, the main living area and kitchen measure just 13 feet wide; large windows and operable skylights add light and cross-ventilation throughout the linear floor plan.
“The windows make you feel like you’re in an amazing penthouse in SoHo,” Alon said. “It gives the room a great energy.”
The rest of the second floor houses a powder room, bathroom and bedroom. Because of limited space, there was no room for a formal dining room. However, Schober said that’s easier to maneuver than the limited storage, which has taught him to think differently about how he stores and displays things.

“I eat at the long breakfast bar, and when I have people over, I use the common space or the roof deck,” he said.
The home’s two floors feel like three, Lynch said, “because of the way the stairway draws one upward through the IDU and then because of how the roof steps up again.”
The roof deck serves as another outdoor room, further expanding the living space. From the rooftop deck, Schober has panoramic views of Venice, not to mention ample room for a dining table, barbecue and sauna.
After renting an apartment temporarily a few blocks from the beach, Schober was still determining whether he wanted to rent another apartment in Venice.
“It originally turned me off to Venice,” he said. “The price points were so high. It felt like people were paying for the ZIP Code. Landlords were asking five grand for an apartment next to a parking lot.”
But when he saw the two-bedroom ADU, he changed his mind. “When I walked in, I thought, ‘I’m going to live here,’” said Schober, who is originally from Philadelphia and moved to Los Angeles from Switzerland.
“The apartment and the secluded feel changed my attitude,” Schober said. “You get the convenience of Venice and access to all the restaurants and shops, but you’re not in the thick of things. I lived in San Francisco for a decade, Europe for six years. I view the apartment as an oasis in a neighborhood that is not as transformed as others.”
Schober said the strength of the architects’ vision is that the unit is quietly tucked away in a congested neighborhood. “Since you are set back from the street, there is no foot traffic,” he added. “It doesn’t feel like I am living among a bunch of units. There is little street noise, and you would never know you live a stone’s throw from Lincoln Boulevard.”
Perhaps most impressive, the ADU defies the notion that you can’t have parking, privacy and quality of living, including a swimming pool, on a tight infill lot with other properties.
In a sense, Schober said, “It seems the solution to the housing crisis is building up.”
“There is a community feeling, and people know each other,” Sharif said. “They sit around the pool, and it’s very intimate and private.”
After a 10-month building process, the team completed the project this spring at a cost of approximately $410 per square foot.
Looking back, Alon is grateful that she moved forward with the project.
“It’s not just a unit that brings value to the property,” she said. “It enhances the entire property for everyone. Adding housing in this condensed community is important, but this team made it something beautiful that people will enjoy. You don’t have to add a huge amount of square footage to add quality of living.”
In a chilly winter, it’s not uncommon for travelers to flock to warm-weather destinations. For example, December was 2022’s most popular month for Canadian tourists to visit Hawaii, according to the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority’s 2022 Annual Visitor Research Report.
It’s a similar story with Caribbean cruises. According to a spokesperson at Holland America, November through March are the most popular months for the cruise line. Clearly, winter beach vacations are appealing, and some beachfront destinations are especially popular this season — seeing higher interest in 2023 than in 2022.
Chase Travel, an online site that lets customers book trips using cash or points from Chase travel credit cards, analyzed its proprietary data to find the top destinations this winter. The data included Chase Travel bookings for air or lodging between Nov. 17, 2023, and Jan. 7, 2024, and found places with the biggest year-over-year increase from last year. Then, Chase looked at beachfront destinations. Here are the top four.
Noord, Aruba (105% YoY growth)
Noord, which means “north” in Dutch, covers the northern portion of Aruba and includes tourist epicenter Palm Beach, the Bubali Bird Sanctuary and Tierra del Sol Resort and Golf. History and culture buffs might visit the California Lighthouse and Alto Vista Chapel.
Luxury-minded travelers might stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba, which is among the fanciest of the Marriott brands. The property just completed an extensive renovation and upgraded all 320 rooms and suites.
Miami Beach, Florida (80% YoY growth)
Miami Beach is hardly an underrated beach city, but the appeal goes beyond its white, sandy beaches and turquoise waters.
In April, Miami earned the title of Bon Appetit’s 2023 Food City of the Year. This winter, Miami is celebrating Miami Arts, Culture and Heritage Months. The event, which runs through Jan. 31, 2024, includes discount tickets to shows, free park and museum tours, and limited-run performances such as “Cuba Under the Stars,” an outdoor musical theater show at Bayfront Park.
Roatan, Honduras (76% YoY growth)
Roatan is part of a cluster of island archipelagos located off the northern coast of Honduras, surrounded by the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere (and second in size to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef).
Perhaps one big reason why it’s spiking in popularity: Time Magazine placed Roatan on its World’s Greatest Places 2023 list, citing its appeal to backpackers and nature lovers.
But it’s appealing to the luxury traveler, too. Among the region’s newest additions is the Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort & Spa, which opened in October 2023 as a five-star, beachfront resort. For a hefty $50 daily resort fee, amenities include coffee, an evening social hour, sunblock, plus snorkel and kayak rentals. And like all Kimpton properties, there’s no pet fee.
West Palm Beach, Florida (57% YoY growth)
West Palm Beach got even more accessible in 2023 when Brightline, a privately funded passenger rail service, began offering high-speed rail service from Orlando. West Palm Beach is the first southbound stop from Orlando after the roughly two-hour ride. (Brightline service between Miami and West Palm Beach began back in 2018.)
If you’re seeking manatees, there’s no better time to head to West Palm Beach than in the winter. According to Manatee Lagoon, a free educational tourist destination, manatee season runs from Nov. 15 through March 31.
Tips to save on a winter beach vacation
Because winter is popular for beach vacations, it can also be one of the most expensive times to travel. These tips to save on a beach vacation can help:
Visit during shoulder season: Delaying your trip until the tail-end of winter can help you capitalize on the benefits of traveling during shoulder season. For example, Florida’s shoulder season is generally late February into early March, according to Visit Florida. During that time, the snowbirds will have had their fill of sun — but spring break crowds haven’t arrived.
Avoid lodging on the beach: If you’re spending your time at the beach anyway, then booking an oceanview room might not be worth the additional cost.
For example, in Honolulu, you’ll usually find lower rates at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani versus the opulent Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach. The former is situated inland one block from Waikiki Beach, on the other side of the Moana Surfrider. Yet, the two sister properties in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio offer reciprocal benefits, including daily yoga on the Moana Surfrider’s beachfront Diamond Lawn overlooking Diamond Head. Sheraton guests can use many of the same amenities as Moana Surfrider guests (albeit at a lower price).
The appeal of the Moana Surfrider is its elegant lobby and wraparound, beachfront porch. But you can listen to the live pianist in the evening even without being a hotel guest. And while the Moana Surfrider’s breakfast buffet on the restaurant’s veranda is popular, Sheraton guests can still charge it to their room.
Pack beach necessities: Complimentary sunscreen as a hotel benefit is the exception, not the norm. As long as you aren’t planning to travel with a carry-on only, pack sunscreen from home to avoid inflated gift shop prices.
It might also be worth bringing your own snorkeling set, as rental prices can exceed the cost of buying your own gear. Rentals can run more than $50 per day, but you can buy snorkel kits from retailers like Amazon for less than half that price.

In the coveted Los Angeles neighborhood of Los Feliz, every residence tells a story, and every street corner holds a piece of Hollywood history.
This hillside enclave, gracefully abutting Hollywood and weaving through parts of the Santa Monica Mountains, offers a unique blend of metropolitan allure and serene, natural landscapes — and owning a home here is a symbol of status and exclusivity.
The neighborhood is anchored by one of the largest city-owned parks in the country, the historic Griffith Park, a cornerstone that lends the neighborhood an air of tranquility, uncommon in large urban settings.
“Due to the proximity to historic Griffith Park, Los Feliz enjoys less density and more natural ambiance than most other large metropolitan areas,” shares Konstantine Valissarakos, one of the most preeminent real estate agents in Southern California, deeply acquainted with the area’s charm.
The neighborhood is also home to the two Los Feliz Villages, brimming with quaint, world-class restaurants and amenities. These local treasures craft a sense of belonging, making residents feel part of a “loving neighborhood” – a sentiment hard to find in the bustling city of Los Angeles.
“The two Los Feliz Villages offer quaint, world-class restaurants and amenities, making Los Feliz residents feel like they are in a loving neighborhood,” Valissarakos added, noting that “Los Feliz compares in popularity to other worldwide destination cities where the inhabitants can live anywhere globally that they want and feel special.”
Known for being a top home-buying destination for A-listers and architecture aficionados alike, the area has witnessed a significant surge in home prices, reflecting its growing demand.
“Los Feliz is home to many celebrities. Home prices have gone up in Los Feliz in recent years to match the demand,” the agent adds, highlighting the neighborhood’s appeal. “Finding a characterful or historic home in Los Feliz, akin to an art piece residence, has become a coveted dream for many.”
So then, what homes can you find in the sought-after area?
We’ve reached out to some of the top real estate brokerages with active listings in the area, to give you a feel of the type of homes you can buy in Los Feliz — but be warned, they come with steep price tags.
These figures, though eyebrow-raising, are not at all uncommon for Los Feliz, a Los Angeles neighborhood that has luxury and exclusivity woven into its very fabric.
Standout Los Feliz houses for sale, from a sprawling $38 million historic estate to a film director’s fully restored Tuscan chateau
Owning a piece of Los Feliz is not just about buying property; it’s about embracing a lifestyle desired by many but lived by a few.

#1 The Cockerham Estate, a $38 million Old World Tuscan chateau
The crown jewel of the neighborhood, the Cockerman Estate is a beautifully reimagined 1914 historic property that’s currently both the largest and highest-priced house for sale in Los Feliz.

Meticulously renovated throughout by its current owners, entrepreneur Myra Chan and her husband — with design and oversight by prized architect William Heffner AIA of Studio William Heffner — the Cokerham Estate welcomes visitors with a grand 2-story entry with sweeping staircase and honed marble floors that sets the stage for the luxury we find inside.
Notable features include an elegant library and living room with imported stone fireplace, a bar/lounge (also with an eye-catching fireplace and custom wood details), an expansive kitchen with a breakfast room, fireplace, center island, and a separate prep kitchen along with a covered heated terrace and full outdoor kitchen.
We’d also like to give a nod to the massive primary with a sitting room suite, marble fireplace, terrace with views, his and hers baths, and large walk-in closets.
Listed for $38,000,000 with Brett Lawyer of Carolwood Estates, the massive Los Feliz house also comes with a lower-level entertainment space (which includes a bar and lounge), a home gym with head-on city views, a steam room, infrared sauna and salon/glam room area, and an oversized garage with elevator directly servicing all floors.
#2 A Spanish Colonial Revival estate that dates back to 1929, listed for $15.9M
A timeless gem, this Harry Hayden Whiteley, AIA-designed estate blends the grandeur of Mediterranean estates with the allure of old Hollywood glamour.
With 5 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms in the principal residence and 1 bedroom and 2 bathrooms in the detached guest house, the estate sits proudly on a nearly one acre-sized lot, offering sweeping views that stretch across the LA basin and beyond.
The home greets visitors with a grand two-story rotunda entry, adorned with hand-painted art and a sweeping staircase. The grand living room, featuring hardwood floors, an ornate fireplace, and a balcony, overlooks a pool and the cityscape.
A library with a unique coffered ceiling and a Prohibition-style bar, and a majestic dining room with a wood ceiling and French doors to a veranda enhance its appeal.
The chef’s kitchen is equipped with top-grade appliances and a large island. Upstairs, five luxurious bedroom suites preserve the 1920s charm, with the primary suite offering a spa-like bathroom and walk-in dressing closets.
Additional features of the $15.9 million Los Feliz house — listed with top producer Rita Whitney of The Agency — include a gym, a 2,200+ bottle wine vault, a media room with a wet bar, and a sauna. Lush grounds, a four-car garage, and a motor court complete this exquisite Southern California estate.
#3 An Architectural Digest-featured $9.9M house that’s a piece of Hollywood history
Set on one of Los Feliz’ most coveted streets, Bonvue Avenue, this 5,447-square-foot home is like a trip back in time to Hollywood’s golden era.
And its beauty was just as appreciated back then as it is now — the Spanish Colonial was even featured in Architectural Digest soon after it was built, in 1925.
Sited hillside, the multi-tiered property at 4808 Bonvue Ave takes full advantage of panoramic city views while providing complete privacy at street level. The property is listed at $9,995,000 with Marci Kays and Jonathan Mogharrabi with Carolwood Estates.
Offering 5 bedrooms and 6 baths, the meticulously renovated and well-maintained Los Feliz house features a double-height grand living room with coffered, hand-painted ceilings, towering French doors, a step-down den and wet bar, all accessed from the scene-stealing foyer staircase.
The imported English wood-paneled formal dining room includes a second-level verandah, an ornamental plaster ceiling, and stained glass vignettes — a bespoke detail that runs throughout the home and compliments the many hand-painted oak doors.
A chef’s kitchen, 600-bottle wine cellar, elevator, family room, library, staff rooms, and home offices all round up the home’s interior amenities.
But the amenities continue outside, where the extensive grounds feature multi-level terraces, gravel pathways, hidden gathering spaces and repurposed speak-easy, outdoor dining, and an abundance of fruit trees.
A formal lawn with a period fountain leads to a private pool that’s only visible from the home, adding an extra note of charm and seclusion.
#4 Villa Collina, a $7.245M trophy estate once owned by film director James Whale
Remember when we said that most Los Feliz houses tell a story, and every street corner holds a piece of Hollywood’s history?
This following property is no exception, as it was once home to lauded film director James Whale, best known for directing classic horror films including Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), and The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), among others.
Before it was purchased by James Whale, Villa Collina was originally built for Clement E. Smoot, an American golfer who competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics — where the American team won the gold medal.
The architect, Henry Harwood Hewitt, is known for designing several staple properties across Los Angeles, including poet Alice Lynch’s former home and the Westlake Masonic Temple in Los Angeles in 1914.
Touted as a “One-of-a-kind authentic dramatic Old World Tuscan chateau in epic setting on a huge flat hilltop lot in prime Los Feliz” per the listing, the 4-bed, 4-bath villa was completely restored before hitting the market for $7,245,000.
Nourmand & Associates agent Konstantine Valissarakos and Richard Yohon at Sotheby’s hold the listing.
Among its many features, 4565 Dundee Drive lists an entertainer’s kitchen with chef’s appliances, built-in breakfast nook and French doors, a primary suite with a fully updated deluxe bath with double sinks, a private office and den, and a redesigned hotel-style full guest apartment which doubles as an oversize spa.
Outside, a well-groomed garden, landscaping, and fountains bring peace and tranquility to the property, while a backyard oasis — with a tiled Roman pool and gazebo with built-in seating — lets guests and residents take in the stellar views.
#5 A Weber and Spaulding-designed architectural gem listed for $5.995M
Before Sumner Spaulding and Walter Weber — the architects behind silent film star Harold Lloyd’s 44-room Greenacres mansion — designed Santa Catalina Island’s storied Catalina Casino, they created this residential gem in Los Feliz.
Located in prime Los Feliz at 3659 Shannon Road, the home was designed to make the most of the panoramic views of the hills and LA city lights with original oversized French doors opening up from the first floor onto the sunny backyard, outdoor dining area, and pool deck.
Boasting 7 bedrooms and 7 baths across 6,408 square feet of living space, the 1928-built home retains many original features, including the classic moldings, hardwood floors, built-ins, the dumbwaiter, and double staircases.
Other unique features of the elegant Los Feliz house include three fireplaces, a first-floor library, a formal dining room, living room, and family room, a first-floor bedroom suite, and a dramatic arched hallway connecting the 6 bedrooms upstairs and the office.
There’s also a massive family room with a fireplace on the lower floor, which opens to a separate section of the yard.
This beautiful property is also listed with Konstantine Valissarakos of Nourmand & Associates and Rick Yohon of Sotheby’s.

Want to know how to get free internet?
The internet is used all the time, and most people use it every single day. As someone who works online, I completely understand how important the internet is – I use it for many hours every single day, usually.
But, internet can be expensive, and many people pay $50 to $100+ each month (and that’s almost $1,000 each year!). If you are looking to save some money, then finding ways to get free stuff can help you spend less money.
Key Takeaways
There are many ways to get free or low-cost internet in your home, on your laptop, and on your cell phone.
The Affordable Connectivity Program is a government program to look into for free internet.
All the big internet companies like AT&T, Comcast, and Spectrum have free internet plans.
Public Wi-Fi is an option, but you will want to make sure you are safe when using free internet connections.
Who Can Get Free Internet Services?
Free internet access can be extremely helpful for people who are not able to afford internet.
After all, internet can be quite expensive, and you can easily spend around $1,000 a year just on internet. That would be tens of thousands of dollars over your lifetime!
If you’re trying to find ways to cut back on your budget, then starting with a monthly recurring expense such as internet can be a great way to lower your monthly expenses for a long time.
Before you start looking into how to get free internet services, it’s important to know if you qualify. Here are some examples of who can get free Wi-Fi:
Government assistance programs – There are free government internet service programs that give discounted internet services to eligible households, typically those that use public assistance programs like SNAP, SSI, WIC, or Medicaid.
Nonprofit organizations – Some nonprofit organizations have free or low-cost internet options, such as for seniors or people with disabilities.
Public Wi-Fi hotspots – You can find free Wi-Fi in different public places like coffee shops, libraries, parks, and airports.

Why is there free internet?
So, you may be wondering why there are free government internet service programs and why certain places and companies give out free internet.
Some reasons include:
Everyone should be able to have internet. The internet is really important and many companies/groups know that and want to make sure everyone can have access to the internet.
The internet helps people to learn online. Getting to learn online is really important for students these days. They need the internet for research, assignments, and using online learning sites. Because of this, schools, nonprofit groups, and even some companies have free internet options.
The internet helps people find jobs. Having the internet can help a lot in making a place grow and get better economically, and the government knows this. Internet lets people look for jobs, start businesses, and be part of the economy. When companies and governments give out free or cheap internet, they give a chance for people to make their lives better and do good things in their communities.
Best Ways To Get Free Internet Access
Below are the best ways to get free internet access.
1. Affordable Connectivity Program
The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is a Federal Communications Commission government program that gives money to households that qualify, to help pay for broadband internet service.
This is the top government program for free internet that you will want to look into and start with.
If you can qualify for this program, you can get up to $30 each month for your internet bill, or $75 per month if you live in certain Tribal lands.
A household can qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Program if their income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or if they meet another criteria such as participating in:
free or reduced-price school lunch program
school breakfast program
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)
Medicaid
Federal Public Housing Assistance
Tribal Head Start
Tribal TANF
Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
Federal Housing Assistance
Federal Pell Grant (from the current award year)
WIC
Veterans Pension or Survivor Benefits, and more.
To check if you qualify and to sign up, go to the ACP website.
2. Lifeline
Lifeline is a government program that gives discounts on phone and internet services for households with low income.
Through this program, you can get up to $9.25 off your monthly internet bill, and that is up to $111 each year for signing up.
You’re eligible for Lifeline if your income is 135% or less than the Federal Poverty Guidelines, which depends on your household size and the state that you live in. You can also qualify if you use SNAP, Medicaid, or other government programs.
So, it is a little easier to qualify for Lifeline than it is for ACP (although, the ACP program does give you more money), as the income level is different.
To check your eligibility and learn more about the program, visit the Lifeline website.
Internet Service Providers With Free Connections
Below are internet providers that have free or very affordable monthly internet plans.
3. FreedomPop
FreedomPop is a company that gives free basic internet plans for your phone because it participates in the FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Program.
If you want mobile internet with a low amount of data, this could be a good choice. Their free plan gives you 10 GB of data every month for $0.00.
To sign up or learn more, visit the FreedomPop website.
4. NetZero
NetZero is a company that has free dial-up internet, but there are some limits. It’s not as fast as high-speed internet, but it could work if you just want basic internet without paying a monthly cost.
The free plan lets you use the internet for up to 10 hours each month.
You can learn more and sign up at the NetZero website.
5. AT&T
Yes, even big companies like AT&T have free internet options.
AT&T has a program called Access that gives low-cost internet to households with low income who qualify because they participate in the Affordable Connectivity Program.
If you can get it, you might get internet speeds up to 100 Mbps at a lower price. This is one of the faster speeds I found for free internet plans – so if you want something a little faster, then you may want to look into this plan through AT&T.
With this plan, there is no annual contract and installation is free.
You can learn more about AT&T’s Access program here.
6. Spectrum
Spectrum Internet Assist is a program for low-income households that qualify for specific assistance programs such as the ACP.
This free internet plan has internet speeds up to 30 Mbps at a significantly lower cost. Plus, you also get a free modem with no data limits.
You can learn more about Spectrum Internet Assist here.
7. Comcast and Xfinity
Comcast’s Internet Essentials program has cheap internet for families with low income, seniors, and people with disabilities.
They have monthly internet plans for just $9.95 per month, which includes equipment.
You can learn more about Comcast’s and Xfinity’s Internet Essentials program here.
Note: Comcast and Xfinity are the same company.
8. Verizon
Verizon has free and low-cost internet through the ACP program. There are also no equipment charges or hidden fees.
You can learn more about Verizon’s program here.
9. Juno
Juno is a company that gives a free internet plan, but there are limits. You can use it for up to 10 hours each month. This could work if you only need the internet now and then, and you don’t need it to be super fast.
You can learn more about Juno’s Free Dial-Up Internet Access here.
Ways To Get Free Public Wi-Fi
Below are different public places where you can connect to their Wi-Fi for free.
10. Coffee shops
Lots of coffee shops (such as Starbucks) give their customers free Wi-Fi so they can use the internet while drinking or eating. People use Wi-Fi at restaurants all the time (some people even work all day at coffee shops for the free Wi-Fi!), so this is completely normal.
Many other stores and companies have free Wi-Fi as well, such as McDonald’s, Barnes & Noble, Panera Bread, Taco Bell, Dunkin’ Donuts, and more.
11. Libraries
Public libraries usually have free Wi-Fi for anyone who comes in. You can do work, study, or just use the internet in a quiet place.
Public libraries also tend to have safer Wi-Fi connections that are monitored to make sure there are no hackers.
Sometimes, you might need a library card to get the Wi-Fi, but getting one is usually easy and free.
12. Gyms
Some gyms have free Wi-Fi for their members as an extra benefit. This means you can listen to music or watch videos while working out, or you can even just find a quiet place to get some work done.
13. City recreation centers
City recreation centers, like community centers or parks, usually have free Wi-Fi for the public. These places can be good choices for working outside your home or office, and you can also use the resources and do activities available there.
I know of many people who use city rec centers for free Wi-Fi, and they even drop their children off in the kids’ centers so that they can get work done (and their kid can socialize/have fun – it’s a win-win!).
14. Coworking spaces
While coworking spaces usually have a monthly fee, some might have a free trial period or days when you can use them for free.
To do this, you can look into local coworking spaces to see if they have any special offers.
How To Be Safe With Free Public Wi-Fi
When using free public Wi-Fi, you will want to be safe. I personally try to avoid public Wi-Fi whenever I can due to safety issues, but I do completely understand that sometimes you do need free public Wi-Fi.
Whenever I have to use public Wi-Fi (I still use it often!), I always follow these tips below:
Use a VPN
To stay safe when using public Wi-Fi, make sure to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). A VPN creates a safe connection between your device (such as your laptop or phone) and the public Wi-Fi you want to connect to, which makes it harder for hackers to get your online data.
When I have to use free public Wi-Fi, I always make sure to connect to my VPN first, as it’s always a good idea to be safe and protect my laptop as well as my personal information. I have a VPN on my phone as well as on my laptop!
Only use networks that are password protected
When using public Wi-Fi, you should always choose networks that have passwords. Password-protected networks encrypt your data, which makes it harder for criminals to get your information.
I know it can be tempting to look for open networks that have no password as that can seem so easy, but criminals tend to use this to their advantage because they know that you are vulnerable (and desperate for quick Wi-Fi!).
Make sure it’s a real network
Before using any public Wi-Fi, you will, of course, want to make sure it’s real. Unfortunately, there are people who sometimes make fake networks with names that seem like the real ones to trick people and hack their devices.
For example, a fake network might be called “Free Airport Wi-Fi” instead of the actual “Airport Wi-Fi.” To make sure that a free internet network is legit, you should ask the staff for the right name and password or check for signs with information about the Wi-Fi you should be connecting to.
I have personally seen fake Wi-Fi networks, and sometimes they are really close to the real ones. So, always be careful and double-check the name!

Although flying is a popular transportation option, millions of travelers choose the scenic and leisurely route that trains, like Amtrak, offer. In 2022, Amtrak carried nearly 23 million passengers to their destinations.
If you have an Amtrak trip coming up, you might be on board for a few hours. In addition to enjoying the passing scenery and catching up on R&R, you can drink on the Amtrak trains or enjoy a meal en route. Here’s what to know about the Amtrak food policy.
Amtrak food policy
Amtrak’s onboard food and beverage policy is fairly reasonable, though there are a couple of restrictions.
Passengers are allowed to bring their nonalcoholic beverages and food on Amtrak trains. This policy applies to all Amtrak seat classes. When you bring your own food and drinks, however, they can be consumed only in your ticketed seat or private sleeper car.
Also, consider bringing food and beverages stored in your carry-on cooler bag that don’t require reheating to enjoy. Amtrak attendants are prohibited from handling, heating or refrigerating personal food and beverages due to federal health regulations.
Let’s say you planned on sitting in the Amtrak cafe car for the entire ride (which is allowed). In this scenario, you wouldn’t be able to eat or drink your personal items in the cafe; only food, snacks and drinks purchased from the cafe can be enjoyed there.
In terms of prohibited items on Amtrak, perishable food and drinks are not allowed in checked baggage. Only small amounts of food and drink are permitted in your carry-on bag to have during your ride.
Can you bring alcohol on Amtrak?
The Amtrak food policy is explicit when it comes to bringing alcohol aboard. Only passengers who have a valid ticket for sleeper car accommodations can bring personal alcohol on their trip. Additionally, you’re restricted to consuming the alcohol in your sleeper car only — it can’t be consumed in public areas, including the cafe and dining cars.
Passengers in non-sleeper car accommodations, like those with a coach seat ticket, are not permitted to bring their alcoholic beverages for consumption on the train.
Although former Amtrak passengers have reported some leniency with discreetly consuming private stock alcohol in other seat cars, it’s against Amtrak’s policy. If you choose to risk it, train attendants and conductors can remove you from the train.
Buying food on Amtrak trains
If you prefer to purchase food during your travel, instead of bringing it, most Amtrak trains have at least one food service option.
Cafe service
All passengers can buy food, snacks and beverages at the cafe car, which is typically located on the upper level. The Amtrak menu offers hot and cold meal selections, from light breakfast fare to a heartier lunch and dinner menu. You can also visit the cafe for alcoholic beverages, including wine, beer, hard seltzer and cocktails.
Depending on your destination, a regional menu might also be available.
Traditional dining
Amtrak’s traditional dining car option offers table service on certain Amtrak trains. You’ll find traditional dining on Amtrak’s:
Auto Train.
California Zephyr.
Coast Starlight.
Empire Builder.
Silver Meteor.
Silver Star.
Southwest Chief.
Sunset Limited.
Texas Eagle (limited route).
This dining option — which serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and alcohol — is an additional cost for seated ticket passengers. You can reserve a table for lunch or dinner in advance, and your first alcoholic drink during dinner is complimentary. Passengers who purchase a private room receive complimentary meals and room service from the dining car.
Flexible dining
Flexible dining offers ready-to-serve hot food and beverages. The name reflects the “flexible dining times” that are offered, instead of having to make reservations for table service. This dining option is available to passengers with a private room on:
Capitol Limited.
City of New Orleans.
Lake Shore Limited.
Texas Eagle (limited route).
Food options vary by train. For example, on the City of New Orleans train, passengers can order a deluxe stromboli, but Crescent passengers don’t have this meal option. Passengers can receive unlimited soft drinks, and like traditional dining, they can get their first alcoholic beverage on the house.
Amtrak Acela dining
Amtrak’s Acela train, which travels along the East Coast, offers first-class passengers complimentary in-seat culinary meals and beverages (including alcohol).
The menu rotates regularly and has included premium dishes like chilled sesame noodle salad and black pepper beef. Business-class passengers can receive cart service while staying in their seats, and the cafe car is available to all Acela passengers.
The bottom line
Whether you purchase Amtrak’s food on board or bring your own, there are options to keep you satiated on the way to your destination.
If you’re thinking of bringing your own food and drinks, keep the Amtrak food policy and restrictions in mind to avoid any issues.

Transport your family and visitors back in time with retro kitchen concepts.
Decorating your kitchen is an exciting adventure only those brave enough to experiment and express themselves embark on. The opportunities are endless between multiple ways to decorate and many styles to converge and bring to life. While following trends is an easy way to decorate, there are more decorating style options when you incorporate timeless pieces and even vintage finds into your kitchen space through retro kitchen ideas.
Retro pieces blend character and charm seamlessly, adding a unique touch that transports your kitchen into a personal haven filled with stories and nostalgia. Curating this feeling, especially in a space where meals are shared, is special because it transforms the act of dining into a celebration of togetherness.
What defines retro style?
Easily defined as a vintage look, retro style emulates or deliberately draws inspiration from historical lifestyles, trends or artistic expressions. It encompasses music, modes, fashions or attitudes emblematic of various eras.
Within popular culture, the “nostalgia cycle” commonly revolves around the two decades that unfolded 20 to 30 years in the past. However, no decade is off-limits when it comes to designing a retro-style kitchen.
Retro kitchen ideas to travel back in time
Whether you’re looking for a decor style to enhance your current kitchen or maybe have a few retro pieces on hand and want to fully dive into the vintage style, this list will assist in your retro kitchen design process. Feel free to mix and match styles, or pair one of the below suggestions with an otherwise-modern setup.

Peel and stick checkboard floors
Checkerboard floors were a staple of 1950 American diners. Select a traditional black and white checkered floor pattern for the ultimate nostalgic feel. Even better, peel-and-stick flooring makes this retro kitchen idea renter-friendly, leaving little to no damage behind.
Retro gallery wall
If you’re unsure where to start or are struggling to find some of the larger pieces, start with creating a gallery wall. Retro art is easy to find, whether you’re printing images out or finding framed vintage patterns that resonate with the era you’re aiming for. Design ideas for these galleries range from funky black-and-white patterns to vintage family photographs.
Coca-Cola decor
Another staple of American history is the popular soda (or pop, as some say), Coke. Retro kitchens, dating back to the 70s, featured everything from wall clocks to signage with verbiage to drink an ice-cold Coca-Cola. Channel this retro cool vibe with antique signage that lets your guests know there’s a cold beverage waiting for them.
Vintage wall clock
If you’re lacking enough wall space to do a gallery, opt for a wall clock. While wall clocks are becoming less and less popular, it’s among the list of perfect retro kitchen accessories to create a vintage vibe. Consider choosing a wall clock with a charming, nostalgic design to not only tell time but also add a touch of timeless elegance to your entire kitchen.
Vintage bar stools
A great way to curate a retro kitchen is through vintage furniture. Take a trip to your local antique store to snag some vintage bar stools. When shopping, keep an eye out for retro patterns and color combinations that offer a retro feel. For example, bright-colored bar stools with chrome accents or vinyl upholstery can instantly transport your kitchen back in time.
Mid-century modern appliances
Brands like SMEG and Forte have created a line of retro appliances that are both aesthetically pleasing and high-functioning. Their appliance lines appear as vintage appliances but work with today’s technology and advanced functionality. These retro kitchen appliances are the perfect addition to any kitchen seamlessly blending the charm of yesteryear with the convenience of modern living.
Diner-style booth furniture
Retro kitchens, back in the day, featured iconic diner seating. This booth seating is a little trickier to emulate in kitchens today but not impossible. Furniture like corner breakfast nooks or bench seating makes for perfect retro-inspired furniture pieces that blend nostalgic charm with contemporary sophistication.
Antique lighting fixtures
Lighting not only brightens up your space but can truly set the mood in a kitchen. For a retro look, find bright color fixtures or fixtures with unique shapes that will enhance the lighting but also serve as a fun focal point. Pendant lights, specifically, can be found in a range of fun retro options that are sure to match your style.
Take a trip down memory lane
These retro kitchen ideas will not only create a unique kitchen space but also open conversations about the past, allowing you to infuse your home with a sense of nostalgia and timeless charm. By blending classic design elements with modern functionality, you can achieve a perfect balance that not only honors the traditions of the past but also caters to the needs of contemporary living.
