Amtrak travelers can choose between 30 routes and over 500 destinations across the U.S. and Canada. Once you know where and when you want to go on your train trip, you’ll need to make your next decision: what class of travel to select.
While Amtrak offers private onboard cabins, most travelers choose between Amtrak coach and business class seats to save money. Learn the difference between coach and business on Amtrak, how to upgrade a coach ticket and how to earn rewards on your trip.
What is the difference in Amtrak coach vs. business?
The main difference between coach and business class tickets on Amtrak is found in the seats; a business class seat provides extra legroom and a wider seat. Other business class benefits include free nonalcoholic drinks and bonus Amtrak loyalty points, called Amtrak Guest Rewards points.
Coach seating on Amtrak
Coach class tickets on Amtrak feature reclining seats. Every seat includes a fold-down tray, an individual reading light and an electric outlet. Amtrak passengers can access free Wi-Fi, overhead baggage storage and a restroom in each train car.
You can purchase both reserve or unreserved coach class tickets, depending on your train route.
Reserved coach class tickets include a guaranteed seat for every passenger, whereas unreserved coach tickets are not guaranteed a specific seat.
🤓Nerdy Tip
Only the Pacific Surfliner and Capitol Corridor routes have unreserved coach seating. These tickets allow you to take an earlier or later train on the same day. You can even choose to travel at a later date up to one year from the reservation date.
Amtrak business class
Travelers who want an enhanced train travel experience on Amtrak should consider booking a business class ticket. These tickets feature extra legroom and wide, comfortable seats. Additionally, business class passengers receive complimentary nonalcoholic beverages on most routes.
Business class tickets sold outside of many routes in the Northeast Corridor do not include assigned seating. Instead, passengers are free to select any available eligible seat.
All members of Amtrak Guest Rewards can earn 2 points for every $1 spent on train tickets of any kind. However, when booking business class travel, you’ll receive 25% more points.
🤓Nerdy Tip
Amtrak Guest Rewards points are redeemable for train travel, hotels, dining and shopping. Train tickets start at just 400 points. Members can also purchase a single-station lounge pass for 1,500 points or a 12-hour one-class upgrade coupon for 2,500 points.
How can you book Amtrak coach and business tickets?
Amtrak offers four ways to book coach or business class tickets.
Online at Amtrak.com.
Through its mobile apps.
At a staffed train station.
Over the phone at 800-USA-RAIL.
The conductor can also help you with a seat or sleeper upgrade if space is available.
🤓Nerdy Tip
Before booking your Amtrak train seats, check out the latest promotions to save money on your trip. Amtrak routinely offers discounts for students, veterans, active-duty military and seniors.
Savvy travelers know to purchase their Amtrak tickets with a credit card that includes travel insurance benefits. These cards typically offer built-in protections in case your trip is canceled, interrupted or delayed — a helpful backup when you’re navigating various train schedules.
Amtrak coach vs. business fares
To illustrate the cost differences between coach and business on Amtrak, this chart shows the ticket price on May 1, 2024, between city pairs.
City Pairs
Los Angeles to San Diego
New York to Boston
Portland to Seattle
The cost varies by route and travel dates (you can expect to pay more during holidays and peak travel periods). You can make reservations up to 11 months in advance of travel.
Upgrading from Amtrak coach to business
If you want a business seat instead of a coach seat, you can upgrade your ticket. Upgrades are available online at Amtrak.com, through Amtrak’s app, at a staffed train station or by calling 800-USA-RAIL. You can also ask the conductor to help you on the day of travel if if unsold space is available.
The upgrade price varies based on your route and travel dates.
The bottom line
Business class tickets are more expensive than coach class tickets on Amtrak; for the up charge, you will receive a comfier seat with more legroom, points bonuses and complimentary nonalcoholic beverages (on most routes). You can upgrade your ticket from coach to business class in advance or on your travel day, assuming there is space available.

Amtrak operates much of the rail network across the United States, providing an alternative form of transportation to driving or flying. But is Amtrak safe? Let’s take a look at a few common questions people may have when they consider the safety of train travel with this company.
What is the Amtrak safety record?
Like other forms of public transportation, train companies, including Amtrak, have to conform to a series of standards to maintain safety and reliability.
The U.S. Federal Railroad Administration oversees train travel in the United States and aims to assure a high level of train safety. It is also responsible for systemwide innovations and upgrades that can improve the experience and efficiency of train travel around the country. Amtrak must adhere to this body’s regulations in order to operate.
Amtrak also has its own board of directors that oversees day-to-day operations and sets policy for the network. The U.S. Department of Transportation secretary (or an appointee) is also on the board.
Train crashes are unlikely, but they do happen. A 2013 study in the Research in Transportation Economics journal found that a person was 17 times more likely to die while traveling in a car compared with on a train. (That same study found that air travel is about 100 times safer than traveling by car). In short, derailments are scary, but are thankfully uncommon.
Does Amtrak have onboard and station security?
Amtrak offers onboard and station security, but you may not always see its staff in action. That’s because Amtrak has more than 400 employees both on the front lines and behind the scenes conducting safety measures. This includes Amtrak’s own police department, which is responsible for keeping passengers and train crew safe.
These employees work to deter crime on board trains as well as in and around Amtrak stations, for everyday safety and for events that may require additional support, like political conventions, large-scale community events or severe weather situations.
Is the Amtrak safe when traveling alone?
Yes, because of security patrols, it is generally safe to travel Amtrak alone. But, like in any situation, it is wise to remain vigilant and keep your eyes on personal belongings, regardless of the mode of transportation.
🤓Nerdy Tip
Luggage racks on trains can sometimes be out of sight, so it’s best to pack light so that you can keep your belongings as close as possible. If you can store them in an overhead rack, that’s even better.
Be extra aware when trains are approaching a station since someone could take your items and disembark. You can always contact an Amtrak employee if you notice something out of the ordinary or feel unsafe.
It’s wise to arrive at the station 20-30 minutes before departure so you can locate your departure platform and be fully aware of your surroundings. When you’re rushed, it’s easier to let your guard down.
A wise option for solo travelers is to choose a seat in the quiet car (if available), which limits conversation and cell phone use to provide a more comfortable travel experience. There’s no additional charge on most trains to sit here, and unless you are on Acela (the company’s passenger train service along the Northeast Corridor), seats in the quiet cars are first-come, first-serve.
Another option is to purchase a business class seat for more exclusivity.
Is Amtrak safe at night?
It’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings, but like during the daytime, Amtrak employs its own security and police staff at night. The onboard staff can also address security concerns.
If you plan to sleep while on the train, be sure to protect your belongings and keep them near you as an added precaution.
On some trains, sleeper bunks or private cabins are an option and can provide more privacy and security.
Is there security at train stations?
Unlike at airports, there is usually no security check before boarding the train. This can be disconcerting for some, since it means there is no one reviewing what travelers bring aboard.
While Amtrak does prohibit certain items in carry-on bags aboard its trains, there’s generally no way to verify that passengers aren’t bringing them on the train. This means that your best chance of safety is being aware of your surroundings and reaching out to train staff if you notice something that feels off or worrying.
Amtrak safety, recapped
Generally speaking, Amtrak is a safe travel option. But, it’s wise to use good judgment and remain fully aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye on personal belongings, and don’t hesitate to reach out to staff if you notice something out of the ordinary.

#1 Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice, directed by Tim Burton, has solidified its place in cinematic history as a beloved cult classic. Released in 1988, the film has retained its charm, continuing to enchant audiences with its darkly whimsical and quirky narrative.
Set in the afterlife and the realm of the deceased, Beetlejuice introduces us to the Maitlands, a recently deceased couple who find themselves trapped in their own home. When the Deetz family moves in and begins to alter their beloved residence, the Maitlands seek the help of the titular character, Beetlejuice, an obnoxious and mischievous ghost.
What sets Beetlejuice apart and contributes to its enduring popularity are its aesthetics. The film’s production design and set decoration transport us to a world that is a delightful blend of the gothic and the absurd.
The Maitland’s haunted house is a marvel of grotesque beauty, filled with eccentric and grotesque details that are meticulously crafted to perfection. And AI managed to capture all of its magic in recreating an interior design inspired by the 1988 movie, as we’ve seen above.
#2 Sleepy Hollow
Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, released in 1999, is a modern classic that has left a lasting mark on the world of fantasy and horror cinema. This adaptation of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci transports us to a hauntingly atmospheric world where mystery and the supernatural reign supreme.
The story unfolds in the eerie, fog-shrouded town of Sleepy Hollow, where the legendary Headless Horseman terrorizes the inhabitants. Ichabod Crane, a skeptical constable from New York, is sent to investigate the grisly murders attributed to this decapitated specter.
As he delves deeper into the macabre secrets of the town, Ichabod discovers a web of dark conspiracies, and the line between the living and the dead becomes chillingly blurred.
Sleepy Hollow is beloved for a multitude of reasons, but its aesthetics play a crucial role in its appeal.
Tim Burton’s signature style is on full display in this film, and it’s impossible not to be entranced by the hauntingly beautiful world he creates. The movie’s visuals are a mesmerizing blend of Gothic and Victorian influences, rich in dark and brooding atmospheres.
The misty, moonlit woods and decaying manors of Sleepy Hollow are brought to life with an enchanting and eerie allure.
The film’s muted color palette, dominated by deep blacks, blood reds, and smoky grays, lends it an unmistakable sense of foreboding. The costumes, too, are meticulously designed to capture the essence of the period, making the characters feel like they’ve stepped out of a haunting painting.
And the interiors AI conjured in the image above beautifully reflect the moody aesthetics of the world Burton created.
#3 Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th (1980), is a beloved classic in the slasher genre. The film follows a group of camp counselors who, while trying to reopen a summer camp, are terrorized by an unknown assailant. As the body count rises, the identity of the killer becomes a chilling mystery.
This film is cherished for its role in popularizing the slasher subgenre and its effective use of suspense and tension. Its aesthetics, though simpler compared to other horror films, play a significant part in its appeal.
The movie’s camp setting, with its rustic cabins, dense woods, and isolated lakeside, creates a sense of vulnerability and fear.

The dark, shadowy cinematography and gruesome practical effects contribute to the film’s enduring reputation as a quintessential slasher classic. Its iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, has become a symbol of horror, and the film’s aesthetics remain an integral part of its enduring legacy.
And here’s how the movie’s aesthetics translates into interior design:
#4 The Nightmare Before Christmas
The 1993 stop-motion animated masterpiece The Nightmare Before Christmas
has carved a special place in the hearts of audiences as a holiday classic. This enchanting film, directed by Henry Selick and produced by Tim Burton, takes us to the whimsical worlds of Halloween Town and Christmas Town.
The story revolves around Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who stumbles upon Christmas Town and becomes captivated by the holiday’s joy and cheer.
Determined to bring Christmas to his fellow residents, Jack embarks on a misadventure that blurs the lines between the macabre and the merry, resulting in a heartwarming and visually stunning narrative — that AI managed to transform into eccentric interiors that blend both the eerie and cheerful visual elements of the Halloween classic.
What makes “The Nightmare Before Christmas” so beloved are its unique aesthetics. The film is a visual marvel, with its meticulously crafted stop-motion animation creating a surreal and captivating world.
The character design, with its array of eccentric and endearing denizens, including Jack Skellington, Sally, and Oogie Boogie, is both spooky and lovable. The contrast between the dark, Tim Burton-inspired Halloween Town and the cheerful Christmas Town is an aesthetic triumph that underscores the film’s central theme of transformation and discovery.
#5 The Addams Family
The Addams Family, the 1991 cinematic adaptation of the classic TV series, remains a beloved classic known for its quirky characters and distinctive aesthetics.
Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the film brings the delightfully macabre Addams family to life on the big screen. The family’s eccentricities, from Gomez and Morticia’s passionate yet gothic love to Wednesday’s morbid fascination and Pugsley’s appetite for destruction, add a refreshing twist to the family comedy genre.
Aesthetically, the film is a visual feast.
The production design immerses viewers in the eerie and opulent world of the Addams mansion, which becomes a character in its own right. The mansion boasts a foreboding exterior and lavish, cobweb-covered interiors filled with bizarre artifacts and contraptions.
And while the exterior of the opulent house is by no means easy to replicate, AI quickly reimagined the interiors of the Addams family house, carefully incorporating the movie’s key themes and aesthetics.
The film’s color palette combines dark, moody tones with vibrant pops of color, capturing the whimsical and Gothic elements that set it apart from conventional family comedies.
The Addams Family embraces the macabre without losing its sense of humor, making it a unique and enduring classic that celebrates the unconventional while reminding us that there’s beauty in embracing the bizarre.
#6 Hocus Pocus
Another Halloween classic, Hocus Pocus (1993) has cast its spell on audiences for decades, becoming a cherished tradition during the spooky season.
The original movie — a much-awaited sequel was released in 2022 — weaves a captivating tale of three witch sisters resurrected on Halloween night in modern-day Salem, Massachusetts, and the trio’s quest for immortality.

The film’s enduring appeal lies in its enchanting blend of humor, supernatural elements, and timeless aesthetics. The Sanderson sisters, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, infuse the story with their zany yet malevolent charm, making them iconic Halloween figures.
The film’s witty and light-hearted approach to witchcraft and the supernatural, coupled with the nostalgic ’90s setting, creates a perfect blend of family-friendly Halloween spookiness with aesthetics that continue to captivate both young and old alike.
And they translate into some equally charming interiors that perfectly capture a timeless and whimsical Halloween atmosphere.
Visually, Hocus Pocus captures the essence of Halloween with its cozy small-town setting, complete with quaint colonial houses and a centuries-old cemetery.
The film’s visuals evoke the quintessential Halloween ambiance, replete with autumnal colors, jack-o’-lanterns, and the sisters’ distinctive witchy attire. The Sanderson sisters’ spellbinding concoctions and magical mishaps, rendered through practical effects, add a touch of enchantment to the film’s aesthetics, making it a feast for the eyes.
#7 Little Shop of Horrors
The 1986 cult classic is celebrated for its unique blend of musical comedy and horror. Directed by Frank Oz, the film tells the story of Seymour, a meek floral shop worker who discovers a peculiar plant with a ravenous appetite for human flesh. As the plant, Audrey II, grows and demands increasingly gruesome sacrifices, the story takes dark and humorous twists.
The film’s beloved status can be attributed to its entertaining combination of humor and horror, with a cast that includes Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, and Steve Martin. Little Shop of Horrors offers a fresh take on the B-movie horror genre, using catchy musical numbers and witty dialogue to add an unexpected charm to the story.
Aesthetically, the film features a distinct 1960s urban backdrop with a color palette reminiscent of comic book aesthetics, easily replicated by AI when creating Little Shop of Horrors-inspired interiors.
The imaginative design of Audrey II, a menacing and larger-than-life carnivorous plant, is a visual highlight, blending seamlessly with the film’s darkly comedic themes.
The film’s aesthetics play a crucial role in making it memorable, creating a world where the bizarre and the hilarious intersect, ensuring Little Shop of Horrors remains a beloved classic for those who appreciate its quirky charm.

Natural beauty. Plenty of golf. Perpetual sunshine. You know all there is to know about Phoenix, right? Well, maybe. But we’re pretty sure there are a few Phoenix secrets that non-residents aren’t aware of.
Everyone loves a good secret and every person has at least one. Just imagine how many secrets there are within the boundaries of a single city. Some good, some bad. They can determine whether you become friends with someone, work for a company or even move to a city.
We’re going to spill the tea and share some interesting Phoenix facts, some of which may intrigue you so much that you want to investigate the city even more!
30 juicy Phoenix secrets that just might make you want to move to this city
1. Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the country — growing by more than 163,000 residents in the past decade alone. The total population is 1.63 million. Another 16 million visitors come through the city each year.
2. You can go on an interdimensional art experience at the Phoenix Art Museum. The Fireflies exhibit by Yayoi Kusama surrounds visitors with mirrors and LED lights. Before you know it, your sense of depth feels like an illusion, and you feel like you’re floating through the night sky surrounded by fireflies or drifting through space encircled by millions of sparkling stars.
3. One of the things that draw people to Phoenix is the natural desert beauty. However, residents (for the most part) try to stay away from touristy destinations so they can get some peace and quiet and enjoy their hometown. One way to do this is to head over to Cholla Trail near Paradise Valley. It’s a 3-mile trail where you can hike and take in some of the breathtaking natural rock formations of the area.
4. Road Runner Farmer’s Market is one of the best-kept Phoenix secrets. It’s a sensory extravaganza where you can look, touch, taste and smell some delicious foods and incredible handmade, local products. The great thing about the farmer’s market is that it doesn’t cost a thing to soak up the atmosphere or even to sample some of the produce.
5. There’s no Daylight Savings Time in Phoenix. No irritation over losing an hour of sleep. Time is just constant here.
6. There are four deserts in North America and Arizona is home to a section of all four of them, including the Sonoran Desert. This is one of the few wet deserts, which makes it one of the greenest and most lush deserts in the world.
7. Arizona is famous for the saguaro cactus. The Sonoran Desert is one of the few native habitats of this type of cactus. They can live to 150 years old, though it can take up to 100 years before the cactus grows its arms. Phoenix secret: You’ll receive a felony charge if you cut one down without a permit, even if the cactus is on your own property.
8. Phoenix is sunnier than any other metropolis in the country with over 300 days of sunshine each year. Just be aware that more than 100 of those days will end up in the temperature range of 100+ degrees Fahrenheit.
9. There are approximately 15,500 golf courses in the U.S. and Phoenix has 200 of them. The city is definitely a golfer’s heaven. If you’re one of those people who think golf is a game that ruins a good walk, don’t worry, there are plenty of activities in the city for you, too.
10. The sunshine draws a crowd, particularly those who are older or who are sick of the snow and cold weather in other parts of the country. Because of this, hospitality is one of the top industries in Phoenix with approximately 500 hotels and over 40 resort properties.
11. Phoenix has an average annual rainfall of around 8 inches. Yet, farming has always thrived in Phoenix, due in large part to the irrigation canal system started by the Hohokam people, who inhabited the area around 700 A.D.
12. This city isn’t all about golf and hiking. Some residents here also strive to keep the Wild West alive. Pioneer Village consists of old west buildings, homes and cabins that date back to the late 1800s. You can choose to go on a guided tour or roam the town freely on your own.
13. One of Phoenix’s best-kept secrets is the Shemer Art Center and Museum. It’s such an awesome place, though, that its popularity has gained traction and it’s becoming one of the most beloved cultural centers in the city. In addition to special exhibitions and lectures, you can attend workshops and classes to learn about painting and jewelry making.
14. Desert Ridge Marketplace is one of the best places to go if you want to catch some live music. It’s a great date spot where you can listen to music (for free!) under the gorgeous Phoenix night sky. Or, you can watch a free movie during Movies in The Courtyard.
15. This city has a franchise in all four major sports leagues — the NHL, MBL, NBA and NFL. Only 13 other cities in the country can boast the same thing.
16. Phoenix has lower than average rental rates. That’s kind of hard to believe since the city is so big and has so many tourists and lux amenities. But the average rent in the city is on par with many smaller cities in the U.S., making it a hot destination for people looking to relocate. If you’re looking for apartments for rent in Phoenix, you’ll be happy to know there’s something for nearly every budget.
17. In 1940, there were only 65,000 residents in Phoenix. After World War II, though, the population started to grow swiftly, in part due to the availability of affordable in-home air conditioning and an untapped labor pool that industrialists took advantage of by moving manufacturing facilities into the area.
18. Phoenix is a haven for music lovers, particularly those who love playing instruments and have a high level of appreciation for said instruments. The Musician Instrument Museum is home to more than 16,000 instruments from nearly 200 countries.
19. Batman is actually from Phoenix. Just kidding — it’s really Dracula. Nope. Just kidding again. But there is a bat cave in the city (it’s actually a flood control tunnel) that is home to thousands — yes, thousands — of Mexican free-tailed bats. The bats gather to rest together during the day and then flock back to their destination during the evening hours.
20. If you thought the 16 million tourists visiting Phoenix each year was impressive, we think you’ll be even more awestruck by this number: 46.3 million. That’s the number of passengers that make their way to and from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport each year. It’s one of the top 10 busiest airports in the U.S.
21. You might not think of Phoenix right away when you think of film locations, but film crews visit often to create their motion pictures. Films shot in Phoenix include Transformers: “The Last Knight,” “Psycho,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Raising Arizona,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Moneyball” and “The Karate Kid” just to name a few.
22. Locals love a low-key day in nature every once in a while. And they get their fix by visiting the Desert Botanical Gardens. Besides all the amazing plants, another perk of visiting these gardens is that at least twice a month, admission is free.
23. If you want to eat where the locals eat, you’ll love this Phoenix secret! Dick’s Hideaway is well-known to locals but not necessarily to tourists. The restaurant doesn’t have a sign and sits inconspicuously next to a hardware store. And yet, it’s an upscale restaurant that serves American classics, as well as local cuisine, for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
24. There’s a real castle here! In the 1930s, a father built the structure as a gift for his daughter. It’s now known as the Mystery Castle. This architectural masterpiece has stone hallways, a cantina, a dungeon in the substructure and a private chapel.
25. Another restaurant known to locals is a cash-only, dive bar called the Silver Pony. You can enjoy a cold, adult beverage and live music while you play some pool. Oh, and there’s a hitching post out front for your horse (that you rode in on, of course!). Yeehaw!
26. Interesting Phoenix fact: The city purchased Sky Harbor in 1935 for $100,000. Considering the fact that the airport handles over 1,000 tons of cargo and 1,200 aircraft each day — and over 46 million passengers per year — we think they made a pretty good investment.
27. Unless you live in Phoenix or have visited the city, you won’t know about an awe-inspiring kinetic sculptural masterpiece called “Her Name is Patience” that towers over downtown Phoenix. The structure is around 100 feet tall and has flowing lights that make the piece appear to come to life each evening. People are in awe of the structure no matter how many times they’ve seen it.
28. If you’re a car lover, you’ll love the Martin Auto Museum, dedicated to the preservation of automobiles for future generations.
29. Fashion lovers will feel right at home in the Biltmore Fashion Center, which is home to some of the most well-known, upscale shops in the state. It’s great for window shopping but if you have the cash, you can have some serious fun. Think Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman” kind of fun.
30. Victorian history might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of Phoenix, but there’s a rich history dating back to the late 18th century. Heritage Park is home to restaurants, museums and some of the most beautiful Victorian architecture you’ll ever see.

Most airlines make it harder to earn elite status each year. Southwest Airlines is going the other way.
The airline is making it easier for members to qualify for its A-List elite status, and adding two free drink coupons to its list of benefits for top-tier elite status members.
In other changes to the Rapid Rewards program, Southwest is adding a “cash plus points” redemption option that will allow flyers to cover a portion of a flight’s cost with points (instead of “all or nothing”).
Here’s what to know about the changes for 2024.
Easier path to elite status
The most significant change Southwest Airlines is making to the Rapid Rewards program for 2024 involves elite status qualification.
Rapid Rewards members can earn A-List or A-List Preferred status by either flying a certain number of segments or accruing a certain number of “Tier Qualifying Points,” (TQP) which are earned through flying and spending on certain co-branded Southwest credit cards.
How do you get A-List on Southwest?
Starting on Jan. 1, 2024, Rapid Rewards members can qualify for elite status as follows:
20 one-way flights (down from 25) or 35,000 TQP (no change).
A-List Preferred
40 one-way flight (down from 50) or 70,000 TQP (no change).
Though Southwest is not reducing the number of TQP a member will need for A-List or A-List Preferred status, the airline is making it easier to earn points through credit card spending.
Cardholders will earn TQP more easily
Starting Jan. 1, 2024, members will earn 1,500 tier qualifying points toward A-List and A-List preferred for every $5,000 spent on the following credit cards:
Currently, those cards earn 1,500 TQP per $10,000 in spending, so Southwest has reduced the spending required in half.
Southwest to add cash + points option
Southwest is also making it easier for members to redeem points — particularly if they don’t have enough for an award flight — with a “cash plus points” redemption option.
Some loyalty programs, especially hotels, already offer this option. This will allow members to book a flight using a combination of Rapid Rewards points and cash. You’ll need at least 1,000 points in your account to use this option.
“Cash plus points” bookings can appeal to members short on points, but they’ll still want to be careful that they’re getting a good value for their Southwest points. The calculation should look like this: (Full cash price – cash price with points)/number of points.
Southwest is expected to roll out this change sometime in spring 2024.
A-List Preferred members get two free drinks
One additional change to the Rapid Rewards program will have top-tier Southwest Rapid Rewards elite status members saying an extra “Cheers!”
A-List Preferred members will receive two free inflight premium beverages (such as beer, wine or spirits) on eligible flights. The drink coupons will be loaded right onto the mobile boarding pass.
This will begin sooner than the other changes, effective Nov. 6, 2023.
What these changes mean for Southwest flyers in 2024
Southwest’s tweaks to its Rapid Rewards program for 2024 is generally good for frequent flyers, making it easier to earn A-List and A-List Preferred status through lowered benchmarks and more efficient TQP earnings for credit cardholders. The two free drinks for A-List Preferred members don’t hurt, either.
It’s also worth nothing, however, Southwest elite status comes with fewer tangible benefits since the airline already has free checked bags, open seating and no premium cabins. Still, since there’s open seating, A-List members’ ability to secure an earlier spot in the boarding process — arguably the best perk of Southwest elite status — certainly comes in handy for frequent flyers.

Although best known for being one of the largest airlines in the world, American Airlines also boasts one of the oldest airline mileage programs ever created.
The AAdvantage program has changed significantly since being launched in 1981. However, it remains one of the most rewarding mileage programs around.
Curious about the best way to use your AA miles? Let’s first recap how the American Airlines mileage program works and then highlight some of the best uses of AA miles.
Basics of American Airlines AAdvantage miles
American Airlines stands out from its competition in still publishing some sort of award mileage chart.
For award flights on American Airlines, the airline now only lists a starting price with no upper bound on just how high the award price could go.
However, American Airlines publishes a fixed award chart for award flights on partners. Award rates vary based on the region you’re departing from, the region you’re flying to, the class of service you’re booking and sometimes even the partner you’re flying on.
Flight distance doesn’t play a factor in award pricing.
Unlike Delta SkyMiles and — to a lesser extent — United MileagePlus, American Airlines awards aren’t as closely tied to the cash price of a flight. That means you can still find outsized value on American Airlines flights.
However, due to its predictable pricing, partner award flights are generally the best use of American Airlines miles. Let’s take a look at some of the best uses of your AA miles.
Best American Airlines Sweet Spots
1. Domestic American Airlines awards from 6,000 miles
The American Airlines award chart now shows one-way domestic awards starting at 7,500 miles in economy or 15,000 miles in business class. However, in practice, American Airlines still prices domestic economy awards as cheap as 6,000 miles each way.
And these bargain-basement rates aren’t just limited to short flights. For example, you can fly from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, across the country to Burbank, California for just 6,000 miles.
If you booked the same flight using cash, you’d need to pay $295 for a standard economy flight — the most comparable cash fare to award tickets. That means you’re getting almost 5 cents per mile from this mileage redemption. That’s more than three times NerdWallet’s valuation of 1.5 cents per AAdvantage mile.
2. American Airlines awards to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America
American Airlines awards to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America now start at just 10,000 AAdvantage miles each way in economy or 20,000 miles in business class. That’s an excellent price for flights that can cost hundreds of dollars.
These award rates aren’t available during peak travel times. However, travelers with a flexible travel schedule may find pretty widespread pricing at this rate.
3. Off-peak and low-season awards to Europe
American Airlines no longer publishes an off-peak award chart for its own flights. However, you can still book off-peak awards to Europe on partners for 22,500 miles each way.
Even better, you can currently book awards on American Airlines between the U.S. and Europe for 42,000 miles round-trip. Note that you’ll need to book a round-trip to get this rate. American Airlines charges 25,000 miles each way if you book two one-way flights.
4. Award flights to Morocco — or beyond into Europe
If you used American Airlines’ award chart as a reference, you might fail a geography test. That’s because American Airlines treats Morocco as a part of Europe. That’s a good thing for travelers as it means you can fly to Morocco for as few as 22,500 miles in economy or 57,500 miles in business class.
Comparatively, awards to Africa cost 40,000 miles in economy or 75,000 miles in business class. Unfortunately, that’s the price you’ll get stuck paying if you connect onward from Casablanca into other parts of Africa — even on a short onward flight to Tunis, Tunisia.
Treating Morocco as part of Europe means that you can also connect through Casablanca on the way to “other” European destinations for no additional mileage cost. This gives American Airlines travelers another way to fly across the Atlantic without paying high taxes and fees on British Airways.
5. Qatar Qsuite to the Maldives or other parts of the Indian Subcontinent
Qatar Qsuite is widely regarded as one of the best business class products in the world. And one of the least-expensive ways to experience it for yourself is by booking with American Airlines miles.
Nonstop flights from the U.S. to Doha, Qatar cost 40,000 miles in economy or 70,000 miles in Qatar Qsuite business class. Even better, you can connect onward to destinations throughout the Middle East or Indian Subcontinent for no additional miles.
You can stretch this award price to its limits by flying to India, Nepal, Sri Lanka or even the Maldives.
6. Flying Japan Airlines to Japan or Korea
Lastly, we would be remiss not to discuss American Airlines’ partnership with Japan Airlines. AAdvantage members can book travel on Japan Airlines between the U.S. and Japan at the following rates:
35,000 miles each way in economy.
50,000 miles each way in premium economy.
60,000 miles each way in business class.
80,000 miles each way in first class.
Japan Airlines provides a top-notch experience in all cabins, making any of these four options potentially a good deal. Business and first class especially stand out as amazing opportunities for using AA miles.
With that said, premium cabin award availability can be especially hard to find between the U.S. and Japan. On dates where there is any award availability, you’ll often find just one seat available.
Earning AAdvantage Miles
American Airlines offers dozens of ways to earn AAdvantage miles. At last count, we found 32 ways — including:
Flying on American Airlines or its partners.
Booking hotels through AAdvantage partners.
Spending on an AAdvantage credit card.
Shopping through the eShopping portal.
Earning through saving with Bask Bank, and so many more.
One of the biggest limitations of the American Airlines AAdvantage program is its lack of transfer partners.
Of the five major transfer point programs, American Airlines only partners with Marriott Bonvoy. You’ll get one AAdvantage mile for every three Marriott Bonvoy points transferred.
If you’re looking for the best use of AA miles
American Airlines offers a diverse range of ways to use AAdvantage miles for good value — from 6,000-mile domestic awards to flying some of the best business- and first-class products in the world for a reasonable mileage rate.
The best use of AA miles just depends on where you want to go.

You want a travel credit card that prioritizes what’s important to you. Here are our picks for the best travel credit cards of 2023, including those best for:
Disney has a massive global footprint across its theme parks, films and merchandise. And it doesn’t stop there. Among its many offerings is the Disney Cruise Line, whose fleet of five ships sails all over the world.
Family-friendly but with adults-only areas, Disney cruises offer some of the most comprehensive cruise options around. Let’s break down everything there is to know about the Disney Cruise Line, including pricing, destinations and its loyalty program.
About Disney Cruise Line cruises
You can always expect some magic from Disney, and there is no exception when sailing on Disney Cruise Line. Although its fleet is small, it offers a high-end, family-friendly experience for guests. Here’s a quick overview of Disney Cruise Line’s key features.
Cabin types: Disney Cruise Line offers all the usual cabin types, including inside, oceanview, verandah and concierge-level rooms. Disney Cruise Line’s cabins are larger than average and designed for families, with split bathrooms and privacy curtains. Their largest rooms can accommodate up to seven guests.
Main U.S. routes: Disney has several departure points from within the United States, including options from San Diego, New York City, Miami, and Galveston, Texas. However, its most frequent departures are fromPort Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida, to the Bahamas and the Caribbean or from Vancouver, British Columbia to Alaska.
Loyalty program: Disney Cruise Line offers the Castaway Club to repeat guests. It has four membership levels — Silver, Gold, Platinum and Pearl. The first level is earned by completing a single cruise.
Disney Cruise Line destinations
Although Disney currently operates only five ships, the cruise line still manages to cover most of the world. Here are the locations you can currently sail on a Disney cruise:
Disney cruise destinations
Australia.
Caribbean.
New Zealand.
Pacific Coast.
Panama Canal.
South Pacific.
Transatlantic.
Cruises are available in a variety of lengths, from three nights up to 15 nights.
Disney Cruise Line prices
Disney cruises tend to be more expensive than the average cruise. Currently, for example, the cheapest cruise departing from Port Canaveral is a three-night trip to the Bahamas, which costs $1,958 for two guests.
And you’ll pay more to take a “special occasion” Disney cruise. The same three-night Bahamas cruise sailing during Disney’s Silver Anniversary at Sea starts at $2,345 for two guests.
When it comes to timing, standard logic applies. The high season will cost more, especially during holidays and the summer break.
The cheapest rate we found — the previously-mentioned $1,958 — is for a cruise in late January, a time when those with school-aged children might have trouble getting away. Meanwhile, the most expensive period for this cruise takes place over the Christmas holiday and rings in at $3,737 for an inside stateroom.
For all destinations, if you’d like to save money, avoid peak periods and search all available dates to find the lowest rates. This is true even on less popular cruises, such as those sailing up to Alaska.
The cheapest cost for two guests to Alaska from Vancouver is $2,983 in mid-September, while the same cruise will cost you $4,607 if you sail over the Fourth of July holiday.
🤓Nerdy Tip
One-way positioning cruises — that is, those that end in a different location from where they started — are often much cheaper per night than standard round-trip cruises.
What’s included
Disney cruises are more inclusive than most cruises. You don’t, for example, need to pay extra for soft drinks on a Disney cruise like you would on Norwegian Cruise Line. You’re also entitled to complimentary room service 24/7, unlike on Virgin Voyages, where you’ll be charged a $5 fee for each delivery.
Here are more inclusions you can expect.
Live, high-quality entertainment.
Large staterooms (designed for parties of up to three guests).
Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay (on most Bahamas and Caribbean cruises).
Upscale restaurants, quick-service dining, poolside snacks and room service.
Adults-only lounges and pool areas.
Waterslides (on some ships).
Disney Cruise Line loyalty program: Castaway Club
Disney isn’t known for its loyalty programs. For example, there is no frequent traveler program associated with staying at one of its resorts or frequenting its parks. However, Disney Cruise Line rewards repeat customers with various benefits, including a complimentary specialty dinner, free photo downloads and an exclusive terminal check-in area.
Castaway Club levels
The Castaway Club levels are Silver, Gold, Platinum and Pearl.

What is the best Disney Cruise Line ship?
The Disney Wish is the newest Disney Cruise Line ship and certainly its best. It just launched in the summer of 2022. Among its many amenities, guests can find the first-ever Disney attraction at sea. It’s a 760-foot water slide filled with show scenes, lighting, music and more that touches down into a lazy river.
The Disney Wish also has dedicated areas themed for “Frozen,” the Marvel Universe and “Star Wars.”
In addition, the Disney Wish has all the regular amenities you’d expect on a Disney cruise, including live entertainment, pools and spacious staterooms.
Frequently asked questions
Does Disney Cruise Line have free Wi-Fi?
Disney Cruise Line does not offer free Wi-Fi. Instead, it has three levels of packages from which to choose:
Stay Connected: $10 per day for the entire cruise or $12 per day for a 24-hour period.
Basic Surf: $20 per day for the entire cruise or $24 per day for a 24-hour period.
Premium Surf: $30 per day for the entire cruise or $36 per day for a 24-hour period.
These packages are available on the Disney Wish, Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream. The Disney Wonder still operates on the old data-usage Wi-Fi packages.
Is Disney Cruise Line all-inclusive?
Most of your daily expenses, including your food and non-alcoholic beverages, are included when sailing on a Disney cruise. However, if you’d like specialty drinks or alcohol, you’ll need to pay extra. Gratuities are not included, and Disney Cruise Line’s recommended tip is a minimum of $14.50 per guest, per night.
How much is the Disney Cruise Line drink package?
Disney Cruise Line doesn’t offer the standard drink package other cruise lines offer. Drink packages allow you to pay a flat-rate price and drink as much alcohol as you’d like.
Instead, you’ll either pay per drink or purchase bundled quantities onboard. It’s also possible to purchase a specialty beer mug at the pub onboard, which can then be refilled across the ship. Much like Disney’s popcorn buckets, your beer mugs entitle you to cheaper refills on all your beer.
Does Disney Cruise Line require COVID-19 vaccine or test?
In the past, Disney Cruise Line required that you be vaccinated or tested for COVID-19 before sailing, but this is no longer the case. Guests departing from the United States are not required to do either, though the cruise line highly encourages you to get vaccinated before sailing.

Silversea is a leader in the luxury, small-ship cruising market. These cruises typically appeal to the high-end traveler looking for personalized service, upscale dining and accommodations, access to smaller ports and a top-notch vacation experience.
If you’re in the market for a high-end cruise vacation, here’s everything you need to know about Silversea.
About Silversea
You won’t find waterslides, kids clubs or roller coasters on a Silversea cruise.
Instead, expect an elevated experience designed for those looking for a relaxing yet entertaining sailing. Here are a few key features of Silversea cruises:
Accommodations
Every one of Silversea’s cabins has an ocean view, and they’re all designated as suites with a high space-to-guest ratio. For guests’ needs throughout the cruise, butler service is available in every room.
Some suites are more luxurious — smaller suites only have windows overlooking the ocean, while classic veranda suites and many others come with a balcony.
Some room categories, such as the ultra-luxurious Otium Suite, are exclusive to Silversea’s newest ship, Silver Nova. Others are found across the fleet, although accommodations on board each vessel may differ slightly.
All-inclusive sailings
Many cruise lines charge their passengers a base fare for the trip, allowing them to choose various add-ons — such as beverages, specialty restaurants, internet access and port excursions — for an additional cost.
Silversea does away with this. It advertises an all-inclusive cruise package, which includes everything from shore excursions and alcoholic drinks to butler service and gratuities.
Primary U.S. ports
Silversea ships span the globe, but travelers that don’t want to venture too far from home will find many cruises departing from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Trips also depart from New York City for destinations in Canada.
Those wishing to depart from the West Coast can set sail from San Francisco or Los Angeles. Ships from these ports travel to the Caribbean, Alaska, Canada and other far-flung destinations.
Where does Silversea sail?
Silversea’s destination map is extensive, with over 900 ports on all seven continents. Sailings are at least six days long, but trips can last several weeks to a month or more.
For those with the time and the money, Silversea offers World Cruises that travel from continent to continent in a global adventure that can take as many as 140 days.
How much does a Silversea cruise cost?
Silversea sailings are no discount venture, but the all-inclusive nature of each cruise adds value.
Meals, drinks, entertainment and onboard special events are all part of the price. The rates vary based on demand, destination and time of year.
There are two types of prices: “door-to-door,” which includes airport transfers and airfare, or “port-to-port,” which is the cruise fare without any transportation to or from the port.
Rates can vary from as low as $2,800 for a seven-day trip from Colombia to Florida to $94,700 for a 125-day expedition cruise from Chile to Norway.
Silversea also offers special fares for single travelers on select excursions, which provides a discount instead of paying the full cost of a double-occupancy cabin.
What is the best Silversea ship?
There are 13 ships in the Silversea fleet — with more scheduled for delivery in the coming years — ranging in size from 51 to 364 cabins. The best ship, however, will depend on the type of sailing you want.
The smallest ships are typically expedition ships that sail itineraries like the Galapagos or Antarctica. For example, the 100-passenger Silver Origin was Silversea’s first purpose-built destination ship, built explicitly for cruising in the Galapagos. It is also the most environmentally-friendly ship built by Silversea.
Another small ship is the Silver Explorer, with a capacity for 144 guests and a strengthened hull to sail in Antarctica and the Arctic safely.
On the other end of the spectrum, you have larger ships such as Silver Spirit, which was renovated in 2018. With space for 608 passengers, it spends much of its time sailing around Europe, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.
Ships like Silver Spirit look more like cruise ships, with amenities that include larger pools, lounges and plentiful dining options. Expedition ships are smaller by nature and therefore have fewer onboard facilities.
The best Silversea ship depends on the type of traveler you are, the destinations you want to visit, and the amenities you desire.
What is the newest Silversea ship?
Silver Nova is Silversea’s newest ship, with plans to set sail later this summer. It will also be the largest ship in the Silversea fleet, with space for 728 passengers. Coming in 2024 is a second ship of the same size, the Silver Ray.
These ships feature a new asymmetrical design that gives their interiors a more spacious feel. Additionally, they’ll have the largest pools in the Silversea fleet, and every suite will have a balcony.
What’s included in a Silversea cruise
As mentioned above, Silversea advertises its cruises as all-inclusive, and compared to many cruise lines, this is pretty accurate. Here’s what’s included with all Silversea cruises:
24-hour butler service.
Complimentary beverages, including alcohol, around the ship and in minibars.
Gourmet meals, including room service and specialty restaurants.
Gratuities.
Select shore excursions.
Wi-Fi access.
Onboard lectures and entertainment.
Passengers who opt for the door-to-door all-inclusive option will also receive the following:
Private transfers to and from their home airport.
Airfare to and from the port city, including international flights.
Transfers between the ship and the airport.
Overnight hotel stays in the port city on arrival or before returning home, if needed.
A few items are not included in the fare and will incur an additional cost:
Meals or accommodations while on shore.
Some shore excursions.
Reservation fees for select restaurants.
Laundry service.
Personal spa or beauty services.
Silversea loyalty program: Venetian Society
Unlike other cruise loyalty programs, Silversea’s program — the Venetian Society — does not award points. It doesn’t have elite status tiers, either. Instead, members earn “days” based on the length of each sailing. The more days they accrue, the more benefits they can receive.
Here’s what Venetian Society members can expect to receive based on the number of days accrued:
All members. By joining the program and completing your first sailing, you’re eligible for 5% savings on certain upcoming sailings. This can represent great value on expensive cruises, meaning signing up makes sense even if you only plan to sail occasionally.
100+ days. 5% savings on all future door-to-door sailings.
250+ days. 10% savings on all future door-to-door sailings.
350 days. Once you reach this level, you are eligible for one complimentary seven-day sailing.
500 days. Reaching this milestone means enjoying a complimentary 14-day trip.
500+ days. After this landmark, members will receive one complimentary seven-day trip for each additional 150 days they sail.
How to redeem Silversea days
The best part about the Venetian Society is that the benefits are cumulative. It’s not similar to a points program where once you redeem points, your balance gets lower until you earn more. With Venetian Society, you can take advantage of that perk once you hit the next milestone while enjoying previous bonuses.
For example, once you hit 350 days, you are eligible for a complimentary seven-day voyage. But, you can also take 10% off any door-to-door cruises — a perk you receive after reaching 250 days — you book after that.
Frequently asked questions
Does Silversea have free Wi-Fi?
Yes. Like most of its onboard amenities, Silversea cruises include basic Wi-Fi free of charge. Those in upper suites will receive free premium Wi-Fi speeds, and other guests can pay for a faster speed package. The prices vary by sailing and ship.
Is Silversea all-inclusive?
Yes, everything is included in the “port-to-port” fare. Adding airfare and ground transfers is part of the “door-to-door” offering.
How much is the Silversea drink package?
Drinks are included in the all-inclusive fare, so no additional drink package is offered.
Does Silversea require a covid vaccine or test?
No, but some destinations may have their requirements. For example, there may be some destinations or embarkation points where unvaccinated travelers must provide a negative covid test, and vaccinated travelers would have to show proof of receiving the vaccine. All requirements and protocols are subject to change.

Nestled in the bosom of autumn’s embrace, there exists a symphony of colors awaiting an eager audience. For those who find enchantment in nature’s shifting hues, leaf peeping is a pastime as enthralling as it is ephemeral. Across the United States, cities cast their autumnal spell, inviting explorers to wander amongst fiery reds, burnished oranges and golden yellows that dapple the canopy of trees.
In case you didn’t know, leaf peeping, or foliage tourism, refers to the popular outdoor activity of observing and enjoying the vibrant and colorful displays of autumn foliage, particularly the changing leaves of deciduous trees. Enthusiasts often engage by taking leisurely drives, hikes or strolls through forests, parks and scenic routes to witness and appreciate the breathtaking natural spectacle.
The transitory brilliance of fall foliage beckons, creating a spectacle that both captivates and enchants. From East Coast towns nestled amidst mountainous splendor to Midwest cities flanked by vast forests, the stage is set for an awe-inspiring show of nature’s artistry. These cities offer not only a front-row seat to the spectacle but also provide an array of experiences and activities to complement the leaf peeping adventure.
Cape May heralds the arrival of autumn with a flourish of colors, transforming the landscape into an enchanting canvas of reds, oranges and yellows. The charm of this historic coastal town is elevated in the fall, as tree-lined streets and lush parks become an oasis for leaf peepers. Each tree seems to tell its own story, with leaves changing at their own pace, creating a dynamic display of nature’s artistry.
The serene beaches, usually the highlight of the warmer months, become a backdrop to the kaleidoscope of foliage, offering a unique blend of natural beauty that enchants visitors and locals alike throughout the entirety of the season.
What makes Cape May an exceptional destination for leaf peeping is not just the foliage itself but the town’s quaint, Victorian architecture that adds an air of nostalgia to the experience. The town’s picturesque setting, complemented by boutique shops, cozy eateries and the iconic Cape May Lighthouse, further enhances the appeal.
Thanks to its proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg is a haven for leaf peeping when autumn descends. The mountains and valleys provide a vast canvas upon which nature paints a masterpiece each year. With a kaleidoscope of colors, the foliage creates a dramatic backdrop against the rugged mountainous terrain. It’s no wonder that Gatlinburg has earned a reputation as a top destination for leaf peeping, providing a vantage point to witness the grandeur of autumn in all its glory.
In Gatlinburg, leaf peeping is not just about the visual spectacle. The town itself adds to the charm of the experience with its cozy cabins, artisan shops and local festivals celebrating the harvest season. And of course, you can find Dollywood nearby and catch the sights from one of their thrill rides. Each corner of Gatlinburg holds the promise of a new discovery, a chance to immerse oneself in the culture of the region.
Stowe pops up as a leaf peeping paradise in the fall. The town’s forested mountainsides and scenic vistas are transformed by autumn’s palette. As the leaves begin to turn, the surrounding Green Mountains come alive with a dazzling display of nature’s artistry. Stowe’s picturesque landscapes, which range from meandering streams and lush valleys to rugged peaks, offer a multitude of vantage points for prime foliage tourism.
Stowe’s charm goes beyond the fall flora, extending into the town’s character and quiet yet lively nature. The quaint New England village, with its white steepled church and charming wooden buildings, complements the autumnal spectacle and adds a sense of nostalgia to the leaf peeping experience. The town’s local farms, artisan markets and cozy cafes provide a taste of Vermont’s culinary bounty, with creative delights always on display.
With its mountainous terrain and aspen groves, Park City is an underrated destination for leaf peeping when autumn rolls around. The town’s elevation and unique mix of deciduous and evergreen trees provide a canvas for a captivating display of fall colors. As the season progresses, aspen leaves transform from a shimmering green to brilliant gold, creating a stunning contrast against the deep green of the surrounding pine trees.
The mountainsides seem to be brushed with golden paint, and the reflection of the leaves in the waters of nearby reservoirs adds to the visual splendor. The scenic drives and hiking trails that weave through the Wasatch Range offer leaf peeping enthusiasts countless opportunities to immerse themselves in the beauty of the season, with every turn revealing a new perspective of autumn’s handiwork.
This former mining town has retained its historic charm while evolving into a world-class destination for outdoorsy types. As the fall colors take center stage, the town comes alive with festivals, art fairs and other community events that celebrate the season’s bounty.
Fayetteville is a hidden gem in the heart of Appalachia that becomes a sweet spot for leaf peeping when fall casts its spell on the landscape. The dense forests and rugged cliffs that surround the town display a mesmerizing mix of warm hues, creating a spectacle that captures the imagination.
The nearby New River Gorge serves as a dramatic backdrop for the shifting shades of the season. As the leaves begin to change, the gorge becomes a sea of color, drawing the eye to the undulating waves of foliage that blanket the hills. Leaf lovers can explore the winding trails that offer panoramic views of the gorge or take a scenic drive along the rim to witness the grandeur of nature’s transformation. If you’re brave enough, you can even take on the Gauley River whitewater courses, which start attracting tourists for several weeks following Labor Day.
Fayetteville’s charm as a leaf peeper’s delight is further enhanced by the town’s natural resources and welcoming atmosphere. As the leaves change, the town becomes a hub for outdoor enthusiasts who come to explore nature’s extreme sports or hike to see gorgeous views. The town itself provides a warm and welcoming setting for locals and visitors alike to savor the sights and sounds of autumn however they see fit.
Lewes stands as an unsung hero of the leaf peeping world. Its quiet charm and historic beauty are amplified by the fall foliage that adorns its oceanside streets and parks. Leaves of every imaginable shade flutter in the wind, creating a rustling symphony that mirrors waves crashing on beaches.
The world seems to slow down, inviting visitors to lose themselves in the colors that paint the town anew. Whether walking along the tranquil banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal or exploring the nearby Cape Henlopen State Park, there is no shortage of opportunities for anyone looking to fall in love with the leaves while catching beachside views of Delaware Bay.
Come fall, time-worn brick houses punctuated by white picket fences provide a stark contrast to the vivid leaves. It’s as if the town has been draped in autumn’s finest attire. The simple pleasure of walking down the cobblestone streets, catching glimpses of crimson and gold, allows one to feel connected to the rhythms of nature. Another plus? It’s a 90-minute ferry ride away from our first destination on this list, Cape May.
With its panoramic vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Clayton becomes a sight to behold as the fall season unfolds. The undulating hills surrounding the town are painted with a medley of miraculous colors, creating the perfect canvas for leaf peeping.
The nearby Chattahoochee National Forest offers an array of scenic viewpoints and overlooks, where leaf peepers can pause and soak in the breathtaking vistas. Whether it’s the reflection of the autumn foliage in the waters of Lake Burton or the panoramic view from Rabun Bald, Clayton’s natural beauty comes alive during the fall, making it a must-visit destination to see the leaves in peace.
Clayton’s Main Street offers a taste of true Southern living and adds a delightful layer to the leaf peeping experience. Fall festivals and farmers markets create a sense of community and connection, allowing visitors to explore the local culture and savor the flavors of the season. The combination of stunning natural beauty and local charm makes Clayton an undeniably unique destination for leaf peeping.
The mix of cottonwood, aspen and oak trees in Taos offers a stunning contrast against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. As the leaves change color, the landscape transforms into a captivating palette of natural perfection, reflecting the warm tones of the surrounding adobe buildings.
Taos’s many scenic drives and hiking trails provide anyone looking to see the fall leaves with countless vantage points to capture the beauty of the season. The Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, which loops around the mountains and valleys, offers breathtaking vistas of the changing foliage. Whether exploring the town’s historic streets or venturing into the nearby Carson National Forest, Taos presents a unique and awe-inspiring leaf peeping experience.
As the leaves change, Taos becomes a hub for art festivals, harvest celebrations and cultural events that reflect the region’s diverse heritage. Strolling through the town’s art galleries, exploring the Taos Pueblo or attending a local festival allows visitors to immerse themselves in the history and creativity of the region.
Bardstown’s sprawling distilleries and horse farms are evolved by autumn’s gorgeous display of colors. The winding roads that meander through the countryside offer leaf peepers the chance to immerse themselves in the season’s beauty, with every turn revealing a new creation straight from Mother Nature’s paintbrush.
The nearby Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest provides a retreat for those seeking to explore the changing foliage on foot, with miles of hiking trails that traverse woodlands and meadows. Whether enjoying the view from a scenic overlook or taking a leisurely drive along the Bourbon Trail, Bardstown presents a leaf peeping experience that is as rich and nuanced as the bourbons that are crafted in the region.
From bourbon tastings and distillery tours to fall festivals and farmers markets, Bardstown offers a taste of Kentucky’s food and culture. Beyond that, the town’s historic buildings, quaint shops and inviting eateries provide a warm setting for those seeking to savor the sights and flavors of the season. Plus, it’s about an hour away from both Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky’s largest cities.
In Ridgway, the surrounding aspen trees that dot the slopes of the San Juan Mountains undergo a remarkable transformation, their leaves turning a brilliant gold that stands in striking contrast to the deep green of the pines and the rocky crags. The Dallas Divide, a scenic byway that winds its way through the mountains, offers a front-row seat to this spectacle. Whether taking in the view from a scenic overlook or hiking along the trails that traverse the Uncompahgre National Forest, Ridgway offers a leaf peeping experience that is as awe-inspiring as it is humbling.

Cruising is a huge industry, so it makes sense that the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) — which started out shipping cargo — got in on the venture in 1988 with the purchase of its first cruise ship. Since then, the company has been steadily growing, adding new ships and destinations to its thriving cruise line.
Although it’s headquartered in Switzerland, you’ll find MSC cruises all over the world, including throughout the United States. Let’s take a look at MSC’s cruises, where they sail and what to expect when you’re aboard.
About MSC cruises
Here’s a quick overview of some of MSC’s key features.
Package types: There are three levels of experience to choose from on MSC. Bella is the least expensive, while Fantastica allows you to get free in-room breakfast and select your room type. Aurea is MSC’s top-tier package and includes access to exclusive amenities, as well as additional discounts and dining privileges.
Cabin types: On MSC ships you’ll find the standard cruise ship cabins, including interior, ocean view, veranda and various types of suites.
Main U.S. routes: MSC has only a handful of departure ports from within the U.S. Most of its routes depart from Miami to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.
Points currency and loyalty program: The loyalty program of MSC is called the Voyager’s Club. Points are earned for the cruises you take and the money you spend while on board.
MSC cruise destinations
You can find MSC cruises all over the globe, including the Caribbean, Canada, New England, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Northern Europe, South Africa, South America and Asia. There are also worldwide cruises that sail to several regions around the globe.
MSC’s worldwide cruises come in as the longest trips, with itineraries lasting as many as 127 nights. Meanwhile, the cruise line’s shortest options include weekend trips to the Bahamas sailing for just two nights.
MSC cruise prices
The reviews of MSC Cruises will likely mention the price of your trip, which is often cheaper than comparable trips on other popular cruise lines. Of course, the total cost will vary based on the trip duration, time of year and what kind of room you select. The least expensive options you’ll find are on short Mediterranean cruises, which can cost as little as $119 per person.
Prices are also affected by the dates that you’re traveling. A three-night cruise to the Bahamas can cost as little as $149 per person, but that same trip can cost up to $349 per person during periods of high demand.
As you’d expect, the most expensive cruises on MSC are the longest. For example, the 127-night World Cruise costs $21,929 per person.
