Just one peek into her home on Providence’s West End tells you everything you need to know about the cheerful force behind Pernilla Interiors: Bold, bright hues abound and Scandinavian patterns pop up in vibrant window treatments, art, lampshades and wallpaper selections.
The circa 1904 home is sunny and cozy, lively yet tranquil at the same time. But perhaps her friend, Harry Adler of Adler’s Design Center & Hardware, describes her style best.
“He said, ‘Well, I can’t necessarily find a common thread in your style when you do work for other people, but it always looks happy,’” she says.
So who better to turn to during these dark February days for some ways to bring color, light and a touch of Nordic coziness into our lives? The Swedish native, who cofounded Kreatelier with Line Daems in 2007 before leaving to start her own interior design business, was more than happy to oblige.
Go Bold
Bergquist loves to push clients out of their comfort zones and play with color.
“There is so much fear of color,” she says. “I’m amazed at how many people chicken out and decide, ‘Let’s just do beige and gold.’”

If that sounds familiar, Bergquist suggests starting small.
Choose one or two colorful pillows, and maybe some fun lampshades, too. It’s easier than reupholstering, say, an entire sofa, and then you can swap out the pillows whenever you like.
Or maybe play around with a small area and see what happens. Bergquist transformed her once-cramped office into a jewel box of a cozy TV room, with moody teal paint and botanical-themed Marimekko wallpaper to match, along with colorful pieces by local artists Kirstin Lamb and Jens Retlev. Vibrant pillows and a blanket crocheted by her sister in Sweden complete the look.

You can even bring bold hues into one of the most unlikely places in the home: the kitchen.
Bergquist redid her kitchen last year, painting the Ikea cabinets white, adding new hardware and uncovering a window to turn the once dark room into something bright and cheerful. Glossy brick-red Moroccan tiles — leftover from another project — make quite the dramatic backsplash.
“I love the uneven glaze and edges,” she says.

Bring in the Light — and the Outdoors

Swedish winters are notorious for being snowy, cold and dark. A typical January day in Stockholm will see the sun rise at 8:30 a.m. and set around 3:30 p.m. So Swedes use lots of little lamps and candles to compensate for the extra darkness.
“I’m obsessed with real candles,” Bergquist says. “I go through a lot of Ikea [candle] boxes. It creates the best dinner ambiance.”
Adding flowers and potted plants works wonders, too. Forcing bulbs early for indoor use is another Swedish trick; Bergquist loves to have hyacinths around Christmas and tulips at other times to introduce hints of spring around her home.
Get Cozy
Another winter staple you’ll find in Swedish homes is sheepskin.
“It’s a great thing to just put on anything and make it look cozy,” she says.
Comfy throws, blankets and quilts look equally chic when draped over a couch or bed and provide much-needed warmth during the chilly winter months. Bergquist is an avid quilter and has piles of her handiwork neatly arranged at the foot of her bed, with a sheepskin throw artfully nestled on a rocking chair that once belonged to her grandmother.

Curate Those Collections
Books, pottery, dinnerware: They all provide pops of color when smartly arranged.
Bergquist tucks rows of books into living room shelves and her nightstand table for entertainment just within reach. Colorful groupings of Swedish Dala horses circle the living room, and delicate Danish pottery enhances the dining room with gentle hints of cornflower blue. She bought her first Bjorn Wiinblad piece at eighteen, and has been collecting ever since.
There’s an art to arranging collections, however. Place them haphazardly around the room and the effect can look cluttered. But display them closely together and they’re transformed into art.

If All Else Fails, Embrace the Darkness

Sometimes you just have to work with what you’re given.
Embrace the long, dark nights by hosting a board game night with friends, some wine and a charcuterie board or two. Or invite folks over for a movie night with hot cocoa and popcorn. Every Tuesday, Bergquist hosts a “puzzle and guzzle” night with friends: They work on a small puzzle, enjoy some wine and just laugh and chat the whole time.
“It doesn’t take that much effort,” she says. “In February, everyone has to survive in Sweden. It’s so dark. But you just make the best out of it. And then you embrace the summer and it’s fantastic.”
Mirrors are a wonderfully versatile design element that can instantly add charm and light to your interior space. Using mirrors in home decor is all about precision, passion and fascination, one that will intrigue you and take you on a journey to a mystical space. The use of mirrors in Victorian-style interior design is an experience of opulence and every element of décor drips with grandeur. It is truly a sight and a pleasure to behold, with exquisite chandeliers, wood carvings and staircases in addition to traditional mirrors. When designed wisely, mirrors can create stunning optical illusions, make rooms appear larger and even create infinite images. They have the ability to reshape our perception of space, making it feel larger and brighter. (Also read: Home decor tips: 4 trendy ways to use tableware to elevate your dining experience )

1. Transform dark space in your home interiors
Brighten up the dark corners in your space by adding mirrors which will help bounce light around the room making it more welcoming and timeless aesthetic.
2. Place an ornate carved vintage mirror above your foyer console
Mirrors are a worthy alternative to expensive paintings. An elaborate mirror carved from solid wood or metal can be an attractive addition to the hallways of your home. Make a statement with a huge vintage mirror in your living room.
3. Use edge-bevelled tinted mirror work for the bar area backsplash
Use edge-bevelled mirror work as a backsplash for the bar area. It will amplify light and make the bar stand out in your dining or living space.
4. Opt for bronze or grey tinted mirror for the wardrobe shutters
The walk-in closet might be a humble space, but it is a space where magic happens when you get ready for a new day. A full-length wardrobe shutter is the epitome of luxury. A full-length mirror wardrobe is the most essential as it serves the functional aspect along with creating an illusion of heightened extravagance. Mirrors can be integrated into the furniture design as well. Use the mirror-shuttered furniture as an accent piece in the interior of your Foyer or Dining Console. Styling coffee tables with black tinted mirrors can add elegance to your living room space.
5. Decorate the backdrop of alcoves/niches
A niche or alcove in your living/dining room can be instantly transformed by using a mirror as a backdrop. This creates the illusion of depth and reflects the artefacts displayed in the niche.
Mirrors are a powerful element that can magnify the space. By placing mirrors strategically in your residence you can create an overwhelming sense of space. Mirror not only transforms your space but also invites you to love yourself, celebrate your inner beauty and reflect the unique you.

The past few years have been full of lessons. For a homebody and serial (re)decorator like me, here’s a big one: never underestimate the value of creating a home you like spending time in. (In some cases, a lot of time.)
Actually doing that is easier said than done, and there’s far from a one-size-fits-all approach. Some things — certain features of your space, or maybe your current circumstances — might make it tough to take on major changes or pricey reno projects. But one place we can all start? Finding (or creating) a home decor style that resonates, and then taking the steps, big or small, to bring it to life.
I’ve lived at 11 addresses in my life (a good chunk of those thanks to the New York City rental market), and made some questionable decor choices along the way. But my ninth home, a 350-square-foot studio apartment and my first solo adult space, was a significant turning point in understanding the power of making an empty box my own. Importantly, it allowed me to discover my eclectic and colorful decor style in the process.
Now, a few years and two places later, I’ve created a home that feels more personal — more like me and the partner I share it with — than ever. It’s an evolution of the style I established in that tiny studio that’s grown with me and that I know will only continue to.
So if you’re feeling inspired to rethink your space in the new year, or just looking for some advice to refer back to later, maybe I can help. Here are some decor tips to make your home feel more like you, so you can enjoy it to its fullest.
1. Get familiar with what you like.
We do it with food, fashion, and even dating. So why does it seem so much harder to nail down an interior style (or styles) that we like? I have a hunch. Furniture and decor isn’t the same as fashion; it’s bigger, more expensive, and takes up more space. Aside from accruing blankets and tchotchkes, it’s much easier to own multiple coats or change a lipstick than it is to swap out your sofa or have another set of dining chairs in rotation. The pieces in your home are designed to be lived with every single day, and you want to like what you’re sharing space with. In this case, decision paralysis can be very real.
So, where to begin? You’ve got options. For some, an interior-design-style quiz can point you in the right direction (especially a thoughtful one from a designer, like this). For others, scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram are the best ways to find variety at your fingertips (and save what you like). Don’t overthink it; you’ll know what you’re naturally gravitating to.
I take a hybrid approach: saving and pinning while also snapping photos of things (hotel lobbies, wall and furniture color combinations in restaurants) I see in real life. I also browse online stores like AllModern, vintage furniture resale sites like Chairish, and even Facebook Marketplace.
When browsing, don’t ignore the small stuff — even if you don’t love the big picture. For example, you may not like the way a whole room looks, but you might love a particular side table. Or you might spot a pairing of textures you love in a lamp but find a way to use that combo in a mirror. I recently saw an aged, almost-black brown wood stool on Pinterest that inspired me to buy a similarly colored bar cabinet on Facebook Marketplace. It’s now one of my favorite pieces.
2. Find a style sweet spot.
You may want your home to look like a magazine, or even the set of a Nancy Meyers film. But a few things you might be less keen on? Creating a carbon copy of someone else’s home or a time capsule of a hyper-specific decor style — early 2000s Olive Garden-style kitchens or Y2K bedrooms. (We can bring back blow-up chairs and lava lamps, though.)
While this can be hard to avoid as trends cycle in and out of style, mixing and matching can be a smart way to maintain a transitional look. Whether it’s pairing vintage with modern, incorporating family heirlooms into the mix, or laying trending patterns and textures (think: checkerboard or bouclé) over more subtle fabrics, this can help your space feel balanced and versatile.
Wherever you ultimately land may help define your decor style tastes even further. And that spot might sit somewhere between a few distinct decor styles, or many — coastal and Scandinavian, preppy meets French country, industrial with hints of art deco and glam. There’s no pressure to fit neatly into a box.
Let my space be an example: my living room is home to a mix of Chinese and Japanese accents, a Moroccan rug, a postmodern coffee table, a modern CB2 credenza with clean lines, a ’70s lamp, and curtains I found at Ikea. It’s eclectic and varied, exactly the way I like it.
3. Embrace the evolution.
All good things must come to an end, or at least change and grow. You’ll know when it’s time to let your space — or your tastes — evolve.
Maybe you’re moving into a bigger space and need the furniture to match, or maybe you’re entering a new phase of life and ready to replace an old table with a sturdier investment piece. In cases like mine, you might be transitioning from living alone to with a dog, a roommate, and eventually a partner. Or you might just generally be ready for something new.
Whatever the reason, trust your instincts about what stays and what goes, and take your time. You might want to keep sentimental artwork, statement furniture, and your sofa. But it might be time to change a rug, a table lamp, or your bedding.
And if you like what you’ve already created but just want to iterate on it, find replacement pieces with familiar qualities like colors, silhouettes, or patterns. Black-and-white patterns have become a staple of my spaces, as have bold uses of green in different shades. I interpret them a little differently each time — on a rug and then a headboard, or on towels and then a lamp — but now, they’re a signature. Wherever they are feels like home.
Designing high-end homes is a multi-layered process rooted in a deep understanding of the homeowner’s lifestyle and personality. While infusing creative distinction and achieving harmonious fusion are the fundamental principles of designing a personalised space, architectural elements such as dynamic scaling, tailored circulation and curated spaces that showcase the occupant’s unique style and personality are essential in transforming a liminal space into a unique yet authentic reflection.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Vineeta Singhania Sharma, Founder Partner and Principal Architect at Confluence, highlighted that the fundamental design principle in creating spaces that not only cater to the user’s needs but also reflect their individuality and celeb-like charisma is defining the balance between the unique lifestyle and personality of the client. Defining the Style: The first step is to define the purpose of the home. Is it a maximalist paradise, a minimalist retreat, or does it embrace the latest trends, or perhaps something more timeless and established? While some clients opt for an inward-looking design that creates a sanctuary within, like Kendall Jenner’s 6,625-square-foot Spanish-style Malibu mansion, others prefer merging indoors and outdoors seamlessly, blurring the lines between nature and luxury—similar to Dakota Jonhson’s serene getaway estate in LA, designed by architect Carl Maston. It is essential to understand the occupant’s taste by pinpointing the critical elements that shape near-ordinary spaces into exceptional homes.
Scale and Dynamic Design: High-end homes are not just about opulence; they are dynamic and engaging. We must design with scale in mind. Whether a cosy reading nook or a grand dining hall, each room should tell a distinct, engaging story that amplifies the space’s dynamism and contributes to the narrative.
Circulation for Lifestyle: The layout and circulation within the home should be tailored to the homeowner’s lifestyle. High-end homes demand distinction. However, such homes require privacy but often require accessibility for staff and guests as well. This balance is essential to ensure the space is functional and comfortable.
Creative Distinction: High-end homes are designed to stand out. To achieve the delicate balance between privacy and accessibility, featured spaces with iconic pieces as placeholders are encouraged. This could be a unique sculpture, a one-of-a-kind chandelier, or even a custom-designed piece of furniture, creating multiple focal points within a space that define the ubiquitousness of a high-end celebrity.
Harmonious Fusion: What makes these homes exceptional is combining an unusual mix of interior elements—furniture, lighting, art and rugs—into an eclectic blend of exclusivity while maintaining harmony. Each piece contributes to a unified, intriguing atmosphere. The challenge lies in selecting pieces that may seem unrelated at first glance but, when brought together, create a cohesive and intriguing atmosphere that resonates with the user’s dynamic personality.
The Art of Layering: High-end homes are a canvas for artistry. Every space is carefully layered with art, statement pieces, textures, and other objects that reflect the client’s personality. Whether it’s a collection of vintage photographs, a gallery of contemporary art, or a display of cherished memorabilia, these layers add depth and character to the living spaces. Each corner must be strategically curated with carefully selected art, statement pieces, textures, and objects that mirror the overall statement and purpose of the home, imparting depth and character to the omnipresent lifestyle of a celebrity.
According to Kuntal Vyas Aggarwal, Founder and Design Head at Resaiki Interiors and Architecture Design Studio, luxury decor is all about the finer details. He shared, “It begins with meticulous craftsmanship using premium materials like fine woods, metals, and textiles, often employing artisanal techniques such as hand-carving and hand embroidery. Elaborate ornamentation, including decorative mouldings and intricate carvings, adds a sense of grandeur and sophistication. Luxury is further heightened by the inclusion of rare materials like marble, onyx, precious metals, and gemstones, seamlessly integrated into various elements of the space. Customisation is essential, allowing for unique and exclusive designs through custom-made furniture, bespoke cabinetry and personalised finishes.”
The interior decor expert added, “Luxury extends to textiles and fabrics, with high-quality materials like silk, velvet, cashmere, and fine wool, adding visual richness and tactile comfort. Fine art pieces, antiques, and collectables are thoughtfully curated to enhance the decor’s cultural and historical significance. Lighting is carefully considered, with crystal chandeliers and hand-blown glass fixtures creating a beautiful ambience. Achieving symmetry and balance in the design contributes to a harmonious and visually pleasing environment. Modern technology seamlessly integrates into luxury decor, offering convenience through hidden audiovisual systems and automated climate control while maintaining a clean aesthetic. Significantly, luxury decor is balanced with comfort, with plush furnishings, ergonomic designs, and thoughtful layouts, ensuring that these spaces are inviting and relaxing.”
She recommended –
Limitless luxe decor: Space is a defining element of luxury decor. It encompasses several aspects that influence the perception of luxury. Luxury often entails generous space, with open floor plans and high ceilings exuding grandeur. Uncluttered designs and minimalism convey sophistication, while functionality and organisation are vital, achieved through custom storage solutions.
Abundant natural light, premium materials, and architectural details like columns enhance the perception of luxury. The seamless spatial flow between rooms and custom designs tailored to homeowners’ preferences add exclusivity. Integrating outdoor spaces and maximising views contribute to luxury and cutting-edge technology for convenience and entertainment. In summary, luxury decor involves lavish materials and thoughtful, spacious, and well-designed interiors that radiate sophistication and opulence.
2. Integrated home automation: Automation is a defining aspect of luxury decor, infusing convenience, efficiency, and a futuristic feel into living spaces. It embodies modernity and sophistication, meeting the expectations of a luxurious lifestyle. Automation’s contributions to luxury decor include –
⦁ Smart Lighting: Customizable lighting scenes, adjustable intensity, and voice control create a luxurious ambience while saving energy.
⦁ Climate Control: Automated HVAC systems allow personalised temperature control for each room, optimising comfort and energy efficiency.
⦁ Home Security: Advanced security systems with intelligent doorbells and sensors enhance safety and convenience.
⦁ Integrated Audiovisual Systems: Home theatres with automated screens and sound systems provide cinematic experiences.
⦁ Motorized Window Treatments: Remote control of blinds and shades enhances natural light control and privacy.
⦁ Smart Home Control: Centralized automation hubs and voice-controlled assistants offer hands-free management.
⦁ Customizable Scenes: Automation systems enable mood-setting scenes for various occasions.
⦁ Energy Efficiency: Automation features like smart thermostats and lighting controls reduce energy consumption.
⦁ Home Integration: Seamlessly integrated systems enhance user-friendliness.
⦁ Customization: Tailored automation adds exclusivity to decor.
Automation defines luxury decor by blending convenience, comfort, and control into living spaces, elevating their functionality and enjoyment.
3. Geographic directions and energies: They play a significant role in defining luxury decor, mainly through feng shui principles and cultural influences. Feng shui considers the orientation of a space, elemental balance, energy flow, natural light, colour choices, materials, and outdoor areas to create a harmonious environment. Luxury decor often aligns with these principles, using favourable orientations, balanced elements, unobstructed energy flow, abundant natural light, and colour associations to evoke opulence.
The choice of materials and textures, personalised spaces, and environmental sustainability further enhance the sense of luxury and well-being. In summary, geography and energy, guided by feng shui and cultural insights, define luxury decor by fostering balance, positive energy flow, and tranquillity, promoting a visually pleasing and harmonious living environment.
4. Meaningful and unique artwork: High-quality artwork is pivotal in defining luxury decor and infusing sophistication, cultural richness, and aesthetic value into a space. Luxury decor prioritises aesthetics, and art serves as a captivating focal point. Artwork with cultural or historical significance adds depth, while exclusivity is achieved through original pieces or limited editions by renowned artists. Art becomes a means of personal expression, allowing homeowners to showcase individuality. It also showcases artistic mastery and can be an investment.
Art influences a room’s atmosphere, scale, and balance, serving as conversation starters and intellectual engagement. Expert curatorial integration ensures seamless and sophisticated incorporation, making art an integral aspect of luxury living environments.
Among the various decorating trends; like maximalism, mid-century modern and bohemian, one stands out and even influences others. Scandinavian decor, as seen at your local IKEA, is characterized by a combination of simplicity, functionality and a strong emphasis on natural elements. With its growing popularity and increasing influence on minimalism, Scandinavian decor is a worthwhile deep dive for those design enthusiasts in search of a crisp and clean functional space.
Popular for its practicality and functionality, this Nordic-design style curates calm yet creative spaces perfect for entertaining, working and living. When navigating the design world, whether you’re an aficionado or a first-time renter, everything you ever wanted to know can be found within Scandinavian decor, without an airline ticket or an interior designer.
What is the Scandinavian decor style?
This interior design style originated in the Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. The Industrial Revolution led to significant changes in society which saw a transition from handmade goods to mass production. In response to this, Scandinavian designers began to emphasize quality craftsmanship and simple, functional designs.
The style gained international recognition and popularity in the mid-20th century, specifically the 1950s and 1960s. This period is often referred to as the “Golden Age” of Scandinavian design which emerged alongside the mid-century modern movement.
Scandinavian modern style, during this time, prioritized affordable yet sleek furnishings and interiors through clean lines, functional furniture and a neutral color palette. Influential designers like Arne Jacobsen, Greta Grossman and Hans J. Wegner created iconic pieces that are still celebrated today.
Defining features of Scandinavian decor
While it’s easy to envision what your last trip to IKEA was like, Scandinavian interiors are much more than simple furnishings and clean designs.
Emphasis on minimalism: Minimalism and Scandinavian decor walk hand-in-hand in the design world. The minimalist philosophy of “less is more” lends itself well to the simple, functional and intentional pieces found in Scandinavian decorated spaces.
Neutral and light color palette: A predominantly white or light color scheme is a hallmark of Scandinavian decor. White walls and ceilings are often complemented by soft, neutral colors like light gray, beige or pale pastels in furnishings. This light color palette helps maximize the natural light in the space, especially during the long, dark winters in Scandinavia.
Natural material usage: Scandinavian decor emphasizes the natural beauty found in nature and natural materials. Materials like wood, stone and leather are commonly used for furniture and flooring. These materials add texture and visual interest to Scandinavian spaces.
Functional furniture and lighting: As IKEA has shown, Scandinavian design is about dual functionality with style. Furniture that serves a dual purpose of practicality and flair.
Focus on sustainability: Nordic countries have a strong focus on sustainability, which carries over into their design choices. Think of eco-friendly materials that are made of reusable materials like recycled wood.

Setting up a bachelor pad often means preparing for the good, bad and ugly—weekend catch-ups, curated dinners and well, (even) unplanned visits. Having a space you can call your own is a blessing, more so if you’ve just begun adulting. While livening it up is often perceived as an investment that demands one to shell out big bucks, the key is to find creative ways and pay attention to detail. “While furniture is the foundation of a bachelor pad, it’s these finer details in decor that truly enhance the living experience and elevate a bachelor pad from simply being a space to live in, to a place that feels like a thoughtfully curated home,” opines Manjul Jayakumar, co-founder, Cananor Guild, a handcrafted luxury home decor brand, adding, “Beyond the usual furniture, your choice of bed linens, napkins, and table linen can make a marked difference in the ambiance. Good quality napkins, especially for the bar, are invaluable. They serve a functional purpose and add an air of sophistication during cocktail nights. As for those spontaneous nights when friends decide to stay over, having a few extra bath towels or at the very least having sets of hand and face towels is essential. This touch ensures that overnight guests feel comfortable.”
Hues To Choose
While the color palette may be minimal, young decorators are introducing textural interest through their choice of fabrics. Linens with different weaves, patterns, and finishes are favoured for their ability to add depth and character to the decor without overwhelming the space. “Youngsters are opting for neutral and monochromatic colour schemes in their home decor. Shades of white, beige, grey, and muted pastels dominate the scene. These colours not only create a serene atmosphere but also allow for easy mixing and matching of linens and cushions,” avers Aradhana Dalmia, founder of The Artemist, a new-age art consultancy.
A bachelor’s pad is a canvas for self-expression, where art and decor can merge to create something young and fun. “One can definitely play with some quirky sculptures, funky wallpapers and colour blocking. Bachelors would also love to have an area dedicated to entertainment which can be done up with some very cool and affordable artworks, such as our ‘deck of cards’ or ‘vintage chronicle’ series,” she says.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
Balance style and functionality: One of the most prevalent mistakes among youngsters is favouring style at the expense of functionality. While aesthetics are undoubtedly crucial, remember that your bachelor pad should also serve as a practical living space. Prioritize furniture and decor that not only looks good but also fulfills a purpose.
Interiors and soft furnishings: “It’s common for individuals to underestimate the profound impact that linens and soft furnishings can have on their living spaces,” notes Jayakumar, adding, “These items are often seen as mere accessories, but they play an essential role in elevating the overall look and feel of your home. The right choice of linens and cushions can introduce texture, color, and warmth, thereby breathing life into an otherwise sterile environment.”
Embrace personalisation: Your home should be a reflection of your unique personality and interests. A frequent misstep in decorating is relying on generic, mass-produced items that lack character. Infuse your bachelor pad with your personal touch by incorporating unique artwork, souvenirs from your travels, or engaging in DIY projects. These elements will imbue your living space with a sense of authenticity, making it truly yours.
Latest Trends In Home Décor For Millennial Home Owners
As quality gathers weightage over quantity, sustainability over excess and personal expression within the boundaries of simplicity; multi-functional pieces like bed linens with storage pockets or table linens with spill-resistant coatings, are highly sought after today.
The demand for contemporary artworks, quirky sculptures, 3-D art or multi-functional installations is on the rise. However, it’s important to understand that your space should not only be Pinterest-worthy or café-like, but also functional and enjoyable for everyday living.
“Your chosen decor, whether an installation, sculpture or painting should never become an eyesore,” concludes Dalmia, with a fail-safe advice: let your space reflect your individuality, but ensure it suits your pocket and stands the test of time.
Everyone dreams of a big home but can’t always get one. But should that mean it can’t be yours with a little hack? Absolutely, not. It is definitely easy to make a large room look fine by filling it in with more furniture, but equally distressing to make a small space look bigger. While decorating the rooms is always easy to organise smaller rooms as they need less furnishing. Here are a few tips that can help you decorate your small space so that it appears bigger than it actually is.

Home Decor Ideas To Decorate Small Spaces To Make Them Look Bigger
1. Proper Use Of Colours
You can make good use of your colour selection to create depth in the room and make it look bigger. For example, using contrasting colours can give depth to the room. Also, avoid using medium-toned colours which will make the room look smaller. Try using either dark tones or bright colours which will create an image of a bigger room.

2. Emphasize On The Vertical
Whether it be a vertical bookshelf or a wardrobe, focus on vertical furniture rather than horizontal ones. Emphasizing the vertical spaces will give roominess and enhance the movement and flow of light in the room.

3. Introduce Mirrors
One of the excellent ways to make your rooms look bigger is by adding mirrors. They reflect and bounce back light and it also tricks the eyes into the perception of a bigger space. Adding a wall-sized mirror to the dining area or the library can make it look roomier.

5. Focus On The Lighting
The light is our friend to make the room look bigger and airy. Natural light can instantly make the room look bigger so it is better to roll up the blinds or remove the drapes and make way for the light. In the case of artificial lighting, it is always better to have multiple lights spread across rather than a single one overhead.
2. Choose The Right Furniture And Its Placing
Choose your furniture wisely. Also, if you have the habit of putting the furniture against the wall, you may need to change it. Allowing air to pass between two pieces of furniture creates the illusion of roominess. It is also advisable to remove large, bulky furniture and place furniture lower to the ground which makes the walls look longer.

6. Declutter The Room
This one is the most basic tip to make the room look bigger. Clutter is the enemy of small spaces. So if you have a lot of unnecessary furniture, it is time to get rid of it or try shifting it to the other rooms. Try introducing useful furniture like shelving units, baskets, or a storage bench which can be useful and will keep the room decluttered.
We hope you make the rooms of your house look bigger using these home decor tips and tricks.

And although the brand is aimed at all skin types and tones, it specializes in ingredients based on her Mexican heritage. “I believe the best ingredients are from the land, and Mexico has an abundance of natural resources that have been used for centuries in traditional remedies,” she says. She notes that a “Dezi Fruit Juice” blend — a mixture of Mexican plum fruit, dragon fruit, acai berry, tamarind, mango, soursop, guava and avocado — is included in every product.

Perkins shares that she’s been using this soft (and super-affordable!) matte lip cream for years to achieve that perfect, creamy-colored nude lip. “It’s really high on my list,” she says. Each of the brand’s 18 pigments is named after a cosmopolitan city. Her go-to shade? London.

The overnight moisture sleep mask — infused with a fruit extract combo and vitamin C — tightens and revitalizes skin for a radiant complexion in the morning. “It’s especially great before a big event because the results are pretty instant,” she says. “I sleep with it and wake up with plumper and hydrated skin.”

Officially, this toxin-free gel is designed to leave curls soft, shiny and crunch-and frizz-free. But Perkins says she squeezes a dab into her palm and uses it in “multiple” ways. “It’s my absolute favorite to get that slicked-back look,” she says. It’s also the secret ingredient to her sleek updo style.

Perkins keeps fresh with an antiperspirant free of aluminum salts, parabens and baking soda. (Her preferred scent is a blend of eucalyptus, spearmint and cedarwood.) “It actually works,” Perkins says.
Perkins raves that this mascara is “the best on the market.” For starters, “it has a small brush so it gets into every lash and it does not transfer onto the lower lash line,” she says. The smudge-proof, carbon black formula is also sweat and humidity resistant, washable with warm water and can last for up to 16 hours.

Good to the last drop: The refreshing and invigorating aroma from this herb brings a cooling sensation to the skin when applied topically and can help revive depleted energy when inhaled deeply, among other benefits. Perkins says she keeps a bottle of the oil in her purse. “It helps me with nausea and migraines.”
“It’s the fastest and easiest way to get those perfect waves in my hair,” Perkins says of this 1.25-inch, ceramic-coated triple-barrel tool, which creates a crease-less tousled style. It’s also easy to pack, thanks to a removable handle.

There’s no avoiding it, the colour pink has taken a life of its own over the past few months, and that is courtesy of the firepower from the Barbie movie’s multi-million dollar marketing machine. While the tenants of the Barbiecore aesthetic may appear to be fairly fresh and new, influencing everything from fashion to entertainment and of course room decor, the fact stands that true devotees of the movement have known about its infectious effervescence for decades now.
Naturally, the look lends itself perfectly to a life of celebrity with its vibrance and glamour, with notable names such as Angelyne and of course, Paris Hilton, counting themselves as proponents across generational gaps worth of lavish pink opulence. But if you’re new to the Barbiecore movement, let’s break it down into simple terms: taking its name after Mattel’s famed doll and her life in pink plastic, the idea is to unapologetically layer pink on pink, with touches of dollhouse whimsy thrown in for good measure.
As all movements do, this one has also seen its fair share of rises and dips, where public opinion towards it oscillated between a curious novelty to a reviled symbol of bimbofication. In the case of modern-day convention, the Barbiecore aesthetic has come to represent a much-needed breath of fresh, strawberry-tinged air that heralds optismism and confidence into a post-pandemic world.
So if you’re looking to bring a little of that infectious joy into your own space and transform it into a Barbie Dream House of your own making, here are some great room decor tips you may want to consider!
1. Nailing the right shade of Barbiecore pink
The most obvious way to jump on board the Barbiecore room decor bandwagon is unsurprisingly, by painting your walls in the appropriate hue of pink. But selecting a pink that works best with your space is crucial, as different hues and shades can alter the visual proportions of a room, making it look either smaller or larger than it actually is. So pick wisely!

In the case of Barbie’s exact shade of pink, it tends to lean heavily into an almost lurid tone of magenta. The closest possible paint swatch that matches this pink from Pantone™ is the PMS Rhodamine Red U.
If painting your room pink is too big of a commitment (understandably so), you can always pick to add pink accents such as cushions, lamps, or a mirror, into your space instead.
2. Consider adding a piece of mid-century modern furniture
Introduced in 1959, Barbie and her accompanying dollhouses are inspired by the mid-century modernist trend that had taken architecture and interior design by storm at the time. Mid-century modern design, most commonly abbreviated into ‘MCM’, refers to an aesthetic that typically features clean, geometric lines accented by splashes of colour and an interplay of materials such as wood, glass, and metalware.

This design motif is most famously featured in the first-ever Barbie Dream House set, which was introduced as a two-storey loft chock full of wood facade appointed MCM furnishings and pinks, yellows, and blues, representing the pinnacle of luxury living for the Mod era.
Naturally, you can score some extra Barbiecore points by adding mid-century modern furniture to your room or home, such as a sofa. Fortunately, furniture pieces after MCM can still be commonly found in most stores. Bonus points if it’s pink, for maximum Barbiecore room decor vibes.
3. Camp it up
Another obvious design motif that is common to the Barbiecore aesthetic is naturally, camp. If you missed out on the show notes from 2019’s MET Gala theme, camp simply refers to the ‘love of artifice and exaggeration’, as American writer Susan Sontag describes.
Of course, given how children are the intended target demographic for the Barbie franchise, the notion of camp has always been inherently woven into the fabric of the brand and its visuals with its playful, larger-than-life interpretation of reality.

You can imbue your living space with just a little touch of camp too by incorporating decorative accents such as pillows in the shape of a pair of lips, an oversized high-heel that also doubles as a recliner, or even light fixtures in the form of clouds.
4. More is more
In the Barbie universe, maximalism is king. This is to say that when your life is plastic and fantastic, you wouldn’t have to worry about downsizing or paring things down, whether it be in terms of your wardrobe or your home. Where the latter is concerned, forget about taking pages from Kon-Mari minimalism and find joy instead by filling your happy space with happy things.

Think overhead LED strip lights or fairy lights for ambiance, or plants in fuscia pots to bring nature into your Dream House. There is truly no bric-a-brac too big, or too small, in this Barbiecore fantasy.
5. Don’t forget scents!
Naturally, a big part of cementing the ambiance of your Barbiecore space beyond furniture and decor is by scenting it accordingly. With an entire market dedicated to room scents varying from stone diffusers to candles and even atomisers, the options are truly endless here.

For the purposes of staying on-brand, floral-based scents are your best bet. Some great options include Jo Malone’s Peony and Blush Suede Home Candle, or the Red Roses Home Candle. For a more budget-friendly alternative, Champagne Toast and Tea Rose three-wick candles from Bath and Body Works are also absolutely perfect.

We make a goal out of building our dream home one day and we work hard to make it happen. Ever passed by a gorgeous house and just stared at it for a few minutes? I know I did! Then went about my business thinking I’ll probably never afford it anyway…
But what if you could create an amazing home using dollar store decorating hacks? After all, it’s just about combining cool ideas with good taste. And if you’re not the creative type, don’t worry! We’ll give you a list of ingenious home hacks that will transform your interiors.
Here are 16 of our favorite decor hacks for an affordable fancy home:
1. Use lighter colors when painting a small room to make it feel bigger
If you’re lacking on space, the first trick you can use to make a room feel larger is painting the walls in softer, lighter colors. White and beige never get out of style, but if these seem a bit dull, you can always choose soft shades like straw, pearl grey, blush, sage, sky blue or eggshell.
2. Signal your style by painting your front door in a vibrant color
Your front door is your home’s first impression. Tell your neighbors about your personality by painting it in a bold, glossy color.
In fact, you can even use take things a step further and make a statement with the color you choose for your front door and make use of conventions. For instance, in Feng Shui, a red front door simply means “welcome.” While in Scotland, painting your front door red means that you paid off your mortgage.
3. Hide your router inside a hollowed-out book
Tired of that router ruining the looks of your bookshelf or coffee table? Use a hollowed-out book to hide it. Just make sure to cut out the part that covers the router’s vents. This way you’ll prevent it from overheating.
4. To cast a lovely shadow, use a Sharpie to draw shapes on a light bulb
Or color it entirely if you love soft light. However, if you choose to simply draw a smiley face (let’s say) on a light bulb, the pattern will not be reflected on the walls. Not as you’ve drawn it anyway. But you can still do it for the sake of design.
5. Paint the sides of your doors a bright, playful color
This is a small DIY home decor hack that can actually make a big impact. Besides, it requires minimum time and effort. So grab a little tin of paint, pick an awesome color that you think goes well with the accents you’ve already incorporated in your home decor and dedicate an hour of your time for this small home project. You will love the result!
6. Use an old ladder to create your own shoe rack
We love DIY hacks that require little to no money. Depending on how your old ladder looks like, you can repaint it or just put it in the desired spot. At least now you won’t stumble over 10 pairs of shoes piling up at your front door.
7. Reinvent a boring dark lampshade by poking holes in it
Well, it’s more like creating a design or an image by poking the lampshade. You want to make it look more interesting, not ruin it. With a little dedication you can create a dreamy starry effect or your own big city lights.
8. Restore old furniture by using contact paper
If you’re looking for cheap home DIY decor ideas, breathe life into an old piece of furniture by covering the ‘damage’ with contact paper. The good thing about contact paper is that you can stick it on any dry, clean and flat surface (not to mention it comes in so many beautiful colors and patterns that your design choices are endless).
And just like that, your kitchen countertop has that marble look you love but can’t afford.
9. Use coins to decorate… whatever you want
Time to break the piggy bank and get creative. Make yourself a penny floor; glue your coin collection on a mirror frame or on a plate. Home decor hacks are a wise way to use your pennies.
10. Frame your favorite pictures with washi tape
Most of us love hanging memories on the wall, but when we lack space, picture frames can crowd the place even more. A great and cheaper alternative would be to frame your pictures with washi tape after attaching them to the wall.
11. Brighten your room with colorful throw pillows
Those small cushions are great accessories for your sofa. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors and textures. Some crisp new pillow covers will change the overall appearance of your room.

12. Go bold with a stylish backslash
You can do it for both your kitchen and your toilet without breaking the bank. Pay special attention to colors and patterns to bring a cheerful feeling with very little work on your part. You can use peel and stick tiles so you don’t break the piggy bank.

13. Use mirrors to make your room look larger
Large mirrors reflect the room back and will trick you into thinking a place is bigger than it actually is. It’s a great visual trick to use to make your room feel larger (and fancier), just make sure not to try going into the ‘other room’.
14. Get rid of useless things
If you still have things you haven’t been using for years or a certain object makes you groan, get rid of it. Don’t act like a hoarder and give yourself some space to breathe. Less is usually better when decorating your home.
15. Pick fluffy towels you’ll love to use
Time to throw away those old discolored towels that make your space look dirty and cheap. Use the fluffy ones you keep in your closet. You know… those that make you feel like you’re staying in a fancy hotel. 🙂 You can easily score extra points here by playing around with the way you showcase them.
16. Place dishwashing products on a cake stand
This is literally one of the easiest decorating hacks out there. Add style to your boring dishwashing products by placing them on a cake stand. Talk about an easy hack to make your kitchen look more fancy in an instant!

Bonus: 17. Breathe life into your space by adding indoor plants
Decorating with indoor plants is a cost effective way to add visual interest to any room without breaking the bank. Plants can be displayed in many different ways from bohemian macrame plants hangers to more expensive stand alone planters, depending on your budget. The great thing about decorating with plants is that unlike other home decor they are truly timeless and will grow and adapt to your interior over time providing a unique look.
