Imagine walking through a dense forest when suddenly you hear a rustling in the bushes. Your heart starts racing: what could be lurking in the shadows? And then suddenly, you come face to face with a giant prehistoric creature that could easily overpower you. This was the reality for our ancestors, who lived alongside some of the most dangerous creatures to ever roam the Earth. From towering dinosaurs to massive predatory mammals, these creatures were the stuff of nightmares. In this post, we’re exploring ten animals we’re really glad went extinct!

1. Smilodon

The Smilodon, also known as the saber-toothed cat, was a fierce predator that roamed the Earth during the Pleistocene era. It had long, curved canines up to 11 inches in length. These teeth were used to stab prey rather than bite, allowing the Smilodon to take down large mammals like bison and mammoths. With powerful forelimbs and retractable claws, this predator was a skilled ambush hunter that relied on surprise and stealth to capture its prey. It is believed that Smilodons hunted in packs to take down larger prey and were notorious for tearing apart humans. Smilodons were wiped out with many large mammals at the end of the Pleistocene age.

2. Wooly Mammoth

The Woolly Mammoth was an ancient relative of the modern elephant that lived during the last Ice Age. These massive creatures weighed up to 6 tons and were covered in a thick, shaggy coat of fur that helped them survive in cold environments. They had long, curved tusks that they used for foraging, digging, and defense. Despite their size, Woolly Mammoths were herbivores that fed on grasses and shrubs. They became extinct at the end of the Ice Age, likely due to climate change and overhunting.

3. Dunkleosteus

The Dunkleostus was a true terror of the ancient seas. This prehistoric fish had a body armored like a fortress and jaws that could crush through just about anything. As a ferocious predator that lived during the late Devonian period, the Dunkleostus would hunt down anything smaller that dared to cross its path. This massive fish could grow up to 33 feet in length and weigh over 4,000 pounds, making it one of the largest creatures of its time. Despite being a ruthless hunter, the Dunkleostus met its end around 360 million years ago, likely due to changing ocean environments.

4. Tyrannosaurus Rex

Tyrannosaurus Rex, better known as T. Rex, was a massive meat-eater millions of years ago. This predator was one of the largest animals ever to exist, measuring up to 40 feet long and weighing over 6 tons! The T. Rex was a ferocious hunter that preyed on other large dinosaurs like Triceratops and Edmontosaurus. Its speed and strength were intimidating, and while some scientists now think that the T. Rex may have been a scavenger, not a hunter, it is still an intimidating creature. Its legacy continues to capture the imagination of people around the world, reminding us of the incredible diversity of life that once existed on our planet.

5. Spinosaurus

The Spinosaurus was a creature of awe-inspiring proportions in the dinosaur world. This massive meat eater was even larger than the T. Rex, measuring up to 50 feet in length and weighing a staggering 20 tons. What set the Spinosaurus apart was its unique adaptations, including its semi-aquatic lifestyle and sail-like structures. These features made it a formidable and intimidating predator. Although it had vulnerabilities like all dinosaurs, the Spinosaurus was still one of the most dangerous creatures of its time.

6. Quetzalcoatlus

The Quetzalcoatlus was an enormous flying reptile that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. It had a wingspan of up to 40 feet and was equipped with sharp teeth and powerful jaws that made it a skilled predator. It is clear that the Quetzalcoatlus was a formidable opponent due to its size and hunting abilities. Despite facing its own set of vulnerabilities and competition from other predators, this awe-inspiring creature has left a lasting impression on our understanding of prehistoric life.

7. Dire Wolf

The Dire Wolf was a massive predator that roamed the Earth during the prehistoric era. It was one of the largest wolf species ever known to have existed, weighing up to 150 pounds. With its powerful jaws, it was a skilled hunter that could take down prey such as bison and horses. Dire Wolves’ hunting abilities and size would have made them a significant threat to humans too. Despite their fearsome reputation, the Dire Wolf population began to decline towards the end of the Pleistocene era and eventually went extinct about 10,000 years ago.

Its most remarkable feature was its shell, which was made up of fused bony plates that provided protection against predators. Additionally, the shell may have helped regulate the animal’s body temperature. It had a long, heavy tail that was also used as a weapon against attackers. The Glyptodon’s massive size, fearsome defenses, and intriguing story make it a fascinating and menacing subject for scientists.

9. Deinonychus

Deinonychus was a fierce predator that lived during the early Cretaceous period. With its sharp claws and teeth, it was well adapted for hunting and killing prey, making it a formidable creature. However, Deinonychus also had impressive defensive adaptations and likely faced challenges from environmental factors. Despite its fearsome reputation, Deinonychus raises interesting questions about the evolution of predatory behavior and the role of competition in shaping ecosystems.

10. Megalodon

Megalodon was a shark that lived around 2.6 million years ago, and it was one of the largest and most powerful predators to ever exist. It could grow up to 60 feet long and weigh around 100 tons, and it fed on a variety of marine animals using its powerful jaws and teeth. Megalodon went extinct around 2.6 million years ago, and its teeth are highly sought-after by collectors. Over the years there have been multiple alleged sightings of the Megalodon shark, but no one really knows for sure if they’re still around as we don’t have the technology to explore the deepest parts of the ocean.

For years, Airbnb offered cash bonuses through its referral program to both the referee and a first-time Airbnb user. Unfortunately, the referral program is no longer active, and you can’t share referral codes with your friends anymore.

Now that the Airbnb referral program is done, you might wonder, “How can I get a discount on Airbnb?” Luckily, you can take advantage of several money-saving methods.

How to get discounts on Airbnb

Reserve a longer stay

Many hosts offer discounts when you reserve their place for a week or a month, so if you’re wondering how to get discounts on Airbnb, one of the answers is to book a longer stay.

If you have a lot of time off or work remotely, we recommend booking an Airbnb for at least seven days to get a weekly discount or at least 28 days to get a monthly discount.

The discount isn’t a fixed percentage and varies. Some hosts don’t offer it at all, so the only way to find out how much a long-term discount will be is to start your search on Airbnb.com.

The discount is applied automatically, so you won’t see it reflected until you click on the listing. Under price details, you should see the nightly price multiplied by the number of nights, a weekly or monthly stay discount, a cleaning fee (if one is charged) and an Airbnb service fee.

The monthly discount is typically much higher than the weekly discount, so you can save a lot of money by booking a longer stay.

Extend your trip by a few nights

Use the trick above to your advantage and extend your stay by several days even if you don’t need that many nights. Sometimes, broadening a booking window can decrease your total price if you fall into the sweet weekly or monthly discount spot.

Let’s take a look at an example. We found a 24-night stay at an Airbnb property that costs $1,127.

However, by extending the stay to 31 nights instead, the price drops to $612, which makes a huge difference for your budget.

You can apply the same thinking to shorter stays (around a week). Extending your stay by a day can either yield savings or get you another night for the same price as before.

We found an example of a six-night stay and a seven-night stay charging roughly the same amount of money after the weekly discount was applied to the seven-night stay.

Book recently added properties

If booking an Airbnb with no reviews terrifies you, the platform offers a way to offset the fears by offering a special discount.

You can get a special offer by booking a stay for a recently added Airbnb listing. The first three bookings made on a new listing receive a discount. You can stack the weekly or monthly discounts with special offers, as well.

However, it might be risky, especially when you don’t know what to expect from the vacation rental or the host.

Scroll down to the host to see if they have other listings and read the reviews left for those properties. Seeing positive reviews for the host and their other listings can put your mind at ease.

Take advantage of an early bird discount

Some hosts attach an early bird discount to their listings. Each host sets their own timeline for how far in advance you have to book to get the early bird discount, but it can be as few as 60 days, so you don’t have to plan your next vacation a year in advance.

If you are booking far in advance — a year out or so — familiarize yourself with the property’s cancellation policy to avoid surprises in case you need to cancel.

Even if the discount is small, anything helps with getting a more afforable Airbnb.

Purchase discounted Airbnb gift cards

Another way to get a more affordable Airbnb is to buy discounted Airbnb gift cards.

Although this method won’t save you a ton of money, you can still save a few bucks, especially when you take advantage of the previously mentioned discounts too.

You can purchase discounted Airbnb gift cards on websites like Sam’s Club or Raise and save a little cash. For example, a $200 Airbnb gift card is going for $193.92 from Sam’s Club and for $188.69 from Raise.

Use a rewards card to pay for Airbnb

It won’t get you an immediate discount, but you’ll earn the rewards toward a future points redemption.

Another suggestion is to use specific credit cards to purchase Airbnb gift cards at stores and earn a rewards multiplier. For example, buying digital Airbnb gift cards from Staples will earn 5% back — on the first $25,000 spent — with the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card.

Book through an airline portal

This isn’t a direct way to save cash per se, but several airlines offer ways to earn frequent-flyer miles on Airbnb stays. Earning airline rewards is akin to getting a small discount on an Airbnb booking.

You’ll earn airline miles by making Airbnb reservations through the following airline programs.

When Mary Krewsun, 65, retired as a physician assistant, she set a goal of traveling because now she has the time. During five days, she walked for 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) along the ancient pilgrim route known as the Camino de Santiago, which culminates in northwest Spain.

“I had heard about the Camino from a cousin who did it, and I was like, ‘I’ve got to do that; that’s going on my bucket list,’” said Krewsun.

She and two friends skipped the hostel route and booked stays in boutique properties, with someone bringing their bags from place to place. “I didn’t want to sleep in a dorm with 15 men snoring,” Krewsun said.

It was the trip of a lifetime, even if her feet sometimes hurt. “I figured, ‘You better do this now while you still can,’ and I am glad I did,” she shared.

Krewsun is not alone in her retirement goal of seeing more of the world. During the pandemic, retirees, like everyone else, delayed travel. Whether it’s a close-to-home road trip or a once-in-a-lifetime international extravaganza, retirees are playing a huge role in the travel surge that’s expected to continue through summer 2023.

A majority of adults (62%) age 50 and over will take at least one vacation in 2023, and most will take between three and four trips, according to a recent survey by AARP.

You have time, and you have money saved, but where to go? Here are some retirement trip ideas to get you started.

Around-the-world cruise

Cruises of two months or more are selling swiftly, so much so that there are cruise lines offering world cruises for the first time. The flashiest is Royal Caribbean, with a record-breaking nine-month itinerary that covers 65 countries on seven continents. The inaugural ship departs in December 2023.

The idea for such cruises is seeing the world in one fell swoop, though often the term “world” is used loosely. Most don’t visit every continent but combine several iconic places. You might, for instance, cruise from Southampton in the United Kingdom to Dubai, Singapore, Melbourne and Cape Town on Cunard, which offers 100-plus day world cruises each year on ships that include Queen Mary 2. In 2024, Queen Mary 2 will visit Europe, Africa and Australasia on a 108-night World Voyage.

Upscale Oceania Cruises has Around the World in 180 Days itineraries, while ultra-luxury line Silversea introduced the concept of a soft-adventure, expedition world cruise from pole to pole. If you’re considering a world cruise, be ready. Start studying the possible itineraries. Then, learn when bookings will open for sale. They tend to sell out fast, sometimes even in a day.

Family reunion

For retirees determined to get to know the grandkids better, family reunion trips afford bonding opportunities and can become the stuff of family lore — as in, “Remember when grandpa thought he caught a big fish and it was just a clump of seaweed?”

Depending on how you, the kids and grandkids like to travel, you might take the family to a Disney resort, book a condo at a ski destination, stay at a dude ranch, or charter a yacht in the Caribbean.

You might choose a stay at an old-fashioned resort such as the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, or the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan, which includes an excuse to dress up for dinner — and an opportunity to distract the grandkids from their iPads with old-school activities like lawn games.

A good plan is to throw out a few destination ideas and see where your family lands.

Follow your passion

Retirement is a time when you might want to pursue your specific interests, and some of those interests may prove great themes for travel. If your goal is improving your golf game, plan that dream trip to St. Andrews Old Course, Royal Dornoch and others which are among the best courses in Scotland.

Improve your sipping skills on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail or on a wine-themed river cruise through Bordeaux. Or splurge on a luxury driving trip, such as a six-day Porsche Travel Experience driving a Porsche 911 on mountain passes across the French Alps — a package that includes a stay in a luxury Alpine “igloo” and a helicopter flight over Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain.

Walk the world’s great treks

You might, like retiree Krewsun, want to look at a shortened “Camino in Style” hike along the famous 500-mile Camino Frances pilgrim trail, which she booked through Macs Adventures. If you’re super fit, do the whole thing over some 35 days.

There are other amazing hikes to consider in destinations around the world. They include the moderately strenuous Kungsleden (The King’s Trail), about 273 miles through northern Sweden, or the highly strenuous 26-mile Inca Trail, gaining 13,838 feet in elevation, over four days, to the mystical Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. Companies such as Wildlife Trekking and Country Walkers have an array of organized group treks.

Book a bike trip

Appropriate for active retirees, bike tours run the gamut from leisurely to extreme. You’ll want to carefully choose your level and route. On the easy end, companies such as Backroads and VBT now have the option on select tours in the U.S. and Europe of using e-bikes.

You may pedal or e-bike through Switzerland, Germany and France, for instance, on VBT’s Black Forest and the Alsace Wine Route itinerary. If you’re looking for a challenge, a Backroads trip through the Canadian Rockies, from Banff to Jasper National Park, allows experienced cyclists to opt on select days for Level 4 or 5.

While the Level 2 members of your group might do 22 miles near scenic Lake Louise, Level 5 that day is an 86-mile ride with a 5,800-foot elevation gain. Both companies also have well-planned self-guide bike tours you can do at your own pace.

Live like a local

Since you’ve got time, consider planting yourself in one place for several weeks, rather than doing a fly-by of various destinations. Staying in an apartment or house, cooking some of your own meals, shopping at markets, mingling with locals and immersing yourself in the local scene is a rewarding experience — never mind that you might hear references to “the Americans” as you walk down the main drag of a small town in Italy.

Before Airbnb and Vrbo, it was harder to find a decent place to stay in, say, bohemian Le Marais or along the glitzy Amalfi Coast. That’s not the case anymore. Plug-in your dates and how many rooms you need, requesting high-speed internet, a washer/dryer, or whatever you want. Carefully read the ratings and reviews of previous travelers to compare options and you’re good to go.

Take that once in a lifetime adventure

Perhaps you’ve put off that longer “bucket list” adventure trip to see penguins in South Georgia and Antarctica, or to go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, or maybe see the Big Five on a safari in Africa — all because you haven’t been able to get the time off from work to do it. What’s stopping you now?

Closer to home, Alaska is a destination that you’ll want to take the time to explore on land and sea, for a minimum of two weeks but probably more, unless you expect to return again at a later date.

Go on a road trip

A big road trip is something else you’ve put off because of time constraints. Consider such extraordinary drives as a national parks route through Arizona and Utah, a plan to see California from San Francisco to San Diego, or a 600-mile journey on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Another drive is on Route 66, perhaps a two-week, 2,400-mile trip from Chicago to Santa Monica, lingering at state and national parks, trading posts and such iconic sights as the Milk Bottle Grocery in Oklahoma City and Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas.

Once every six months, whether I need to or not, I meet with my investment adviser from Fidelity. I’ve been doing this for five years, and have come to value the experience as truly educational. On Tuesday, for instance, my new adviser Michael talked me through some income planning.

My financial life has been turbulent over the past few years:

First, I was deep in debt and struggling.
When Get Rich Slowly began to grow, I paid off my debt and accumulated cash.
When I sold Get Rich Slowly, I invested the windfall in index funds and municipal bonds.
When Kris and I divorced, she received the municipal bonds.
When I bought my condo, some of my index funds were converted into real estate.

For years, my income and expenses have been all over the map with no semblance of normalcy and no consistency. Now, at last, things are settling into something of a routine and I can think about planning for the future. Since June, I’ve once again been tracking every penny I spend in order to get a clear picture of my financial situation.

In my meeting with Fidelity, I explained to Michael that my income is smaller than it has been since the 1990s. Between writing gigs and interest income on three business loans, I make less than $2000 per month. (I’m also being paid about $1000 per month principal on those three loans, which I treat as income even though it’s not. It’s more like savings.)

My monthly spending is reasonable except that I spend a lot on travel. My income (including principal on the loans) would come close to covering my expenses if I didn’t take two big trips (and several small trips) every year. But I do take those trips, and that adds $2000 per month to my expenses.

So far, I’ve subsidized my travel by slowly drawing down cash savings, but those funds will be gone by the end of 2014. It’s time to start thinking about the future. If I choose to maintain this sort of lifestyle, how will I fund it? Michael and I talked about the options.

One path, of course, is to make more money, and that’s my top choice.

At any time, I could return to the traditional work force. It might be fun to do so, but I’d rather earn more from my writing. I could pick up paid gigs writing about personal finance — I don’t get paid for my work at Get Rich Slowly, and I’ve resigned from my column at Entrepreneur magazine effective next month — but I’ve found that getting paid to write about money takes the joy out of it. I could write another financial book; in fact, I’m doing so right now. Or I could change my focus to fiction, which holds a certain appeal. (I plan to take a fiction writing class starting in January.)

Another path is to start a side business. Or two.

I told Michael about my desire to open a money store where I’d sell books and magazines, hold classes about budgeting and investing, and offer one-on-one counseling. Or I could try to make money from another blog. I have several great domains and ideas on the back-burner, including a couple I could do with Kim. Or I could start some other of business. I do not lack for ideas!

Michael suggested another way to fund my lifestyle: “For a while, until you’re making full-time income again, you could take systematic withdrawals from your portfolio. You wouldn’t need to take a lot. Just enough to cover the difference between your existing income and expenses.”

He showed me Fidelity’s guide to retirement income investing, which includes a simple calculator that computes “potential sustainable monthly withdrawals” from a portfolio based on a starting balance, asset allocation, and life expectancy. In other words, you tell it how much you have and how long you expect to live, and the calculator tells you — at a “90% confidence level” — how much income your portfolio could give you for the rest of your life.

If we assume you’ll live until 80, for instance, and have a balanced portfolio (50% stocks, 40% bonds, 10% cash):

If you’re 30 years old and have $100,000 saved, there’s a 90% chance that your portfolio would produce $291 per month, adjusted for inflation.
If you’re my age — 44 years old — and have $1,000,000 saved, there’s a 90% chance that your portfolio would produce $3348 per month.
If you’re 60 years old and have $250,000 saved, there’s a 90% chance that your portfolio would produce $1202 per month for the next twenty years.

After playing with the numbers for a few minutes, I’d come up with a plan.

I like my lifestyle. It’s comfortable but not extravagant. Still, I’ve become lazy. It’d be good for me to exercise my frugality muscles a little more. I can cut back on food, for one. (My food expenses have been high for the past two years because I eat out a lot and I shop at a fancy supermarket.) I can also find ways to travel more economically by focusing on domestic travel instead of going abroad.

Meanwhile, I’ll fund my spending with income and cash savings for as long as possible. Also, I’ll strive to increase my income from writing (through the book I’m working on) and a couple of targeted websites (including at least one that I do with Kim). As a last resort, I’ll tap into my investments to subsidize my lifestyle, as Michael suggested. But I shouldn’t have to worry about that for a couple of years. By then, I hope to have established equilibrium!

Not everything in my meetings at Fidelity is useful. I don’t care about the hot new funds, and I’m not interested in annuities. But each time I talk with an adviser, I learn something new, and I think that’s the point.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day details of our own lives. We get mired in the minutia of our finances so that sometimes we miss the forest for the trees. Plus, it’s an objective third party can always see things we don’t, helping us to explore options we might not otherwise have considered.

Late fall and early winter tend to be cloudy in Memphis, but there’s not a high chance of snow. Rainfall tends to peak in early December and mid-April.

You’ll want furniture with clean lines, minimal large-scale pieces that create interior vistas, and just a few accessories. Here are some ways you can subtly layer textures and tones into your space:

Natural Fabrics: Leathers and hide-on-hair fabrics can be incorporated via dining chairs, bar stools, accent chairs, and pillows.
Metal Accents: Metal legs on furniture, hardware with some patina, black steel windows and doors, and metal beams are beautiful mountain modern touches.

Incorporate task and accent lighting for early mornings and evenings. “You’ll notice in the national park lodges there’s no overhead can lights,” says Humphrey. “Typically, there’s multiple sources of light, such as chandeliers, table lamps, and floor lamps. It gives you options at home to set the mountain mood.”

Let Windows Be Your Art

If you’re lucky to live in the mountains—and luckier yet to have a stellar view—let nature be your featured artwork. Arrange your space so that you’re invited to gaze outside, and keep window dressings light and to a minimum. If budget allows, consider incorporating a new window or widening an existing one. As an alternative, consider transforming a small door into a larger one, or swap in a full-glass door versus covered iterations.

“Clean lines and modern finishes can lean both warm or more cold or sterile, but by bringing in the rustic principles of mountain modern, cold doesn’t work,” says Obermann. “Keep your finishes—even if they are more modern—warm and inviting.” This can be incorporated through the right wall color, large, cozy textiles, inviting furniture, and lighting.

In lieu of (or perhaps in addition to) actual mountain views, art prints can bring a little mountain modern into your home. “Whether it’s vintage travel posters or flea market paintings of outdoor scenes, art is a good way to remind you of your travels or inspire you to go outside,” Humphrey says.

Wallpaper is an easy way to bring some mountain modern magic into your home. “Even a floral print or a plaid or gingham paper that resembles a camp blanket can be a wink towards mountain modern, and can be used in a big way or sparingly in an accent wall or a guest room,” says Humphrey. When in doubt, stick to earthy hues such as forest green, cream, or sky blue that evoke nature.

Replacing worn or outdated furniture and household items can be fun and uplifting. But many new mass-produced items, sometimes referred to as “fast furniture” sold at big-box chain stores, are usually made with cheaper composite materials or chemical stain repellants that will off-gas once they are in the home. Off-gassing is the airborne release of chemicals and volatile organic compounds, or VOCs (architecturaldigest.com/story/what-is-off-gassing).

Much like trendy “fast fashion” clothing, fast furniture isn’t made for durability. Once worn or broken, these items are typically destined for the landfills. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that in 2018, the most recent data available, 9,680 tons of furniture was landfilled, up from 2.2 tons in 1960 (tinyurl.com/5xhk999p). Because new furniture is often manufactured overseas, it generates carbon emissions from being shipped across the globe.

For those that want to circumvent mass-produced furniture, home décor and kitchen items, buying used items from local thrift and resale stores is a good place to start. Habitat for Humanity ReStore, with locations in Franklin, Wauwatosa and Greenfield (milwaukeerestore.org), offers used furniture, lighting, building materials, home accessories and more. Proceeds from ReStore sales go toward Habitat for Humanity’s affordable home ownership programs.

Thrift stores such as Value Village, Goodwill and St. Vincent de Paul, each with multiple locations through Milwaukee, carry furniture and home décor. Sustainably minded stores in the Milwaukee area that sell new furniture and home décor include La Lune Collection (930 E. Burleigh St.), founded by interior designer Mario Costantini. La Lune harvests only fast-growing and invasive wood species, and products are made as ordered.
