Silversea is a leader in the luxury, small-ship cruising market. These cruises typically appeal to the high-end traveler looking for personalized service, upscale dining and accommodations, access to smaller ports and a top-notch vacation experience.
If you’re in the market for a high-end cruise vacation, here’s everything you need to know about Silversea.
About Silversea
You won’t find waterslides, kids clubs or roller coasters on a Silversea cruise.
Instead, expect an elevated experience designed for those looking for a relaxing yet entertaining sailing. Here are a few key features of Silversea cruises:
Accommodations
Every one of Silversea’s cabins has an ocean view, and they’re all designated as suites with a high space-to-guest ratio. For guests’ needs throughout the cruise, butler service is available in every room.
Some suites are more luxurious — smaller suites only have windows overlooking the ocean, while classic veranda suites and many others come with a balcony.
Some room categories, such as the ultra-luxurious Otium Suite, are exclusive to Silversea’s newest ship, Silver Nova. Others are found across the fleet, although accommodations on board each vessel may differ slightly.
All-inclusive sailings
Many cruise lines charge their passengers a base fare for the trip, allowing them to choose various add-ons — such as beverages, specialty restaurants, internet access and port excursions — for an additional cost.
Silversea does away with this. It advertises an all-inclusive cruise package, which includes everything from shore excursions and alcoholic drinks to butler service and gratuities.
Primary U.S. ports
Silversea ships span the globe, but travelers that don’t want to venture too far from home will find many cruises departing from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Trips also depart from New York City for destinations in Canada.
Those wishing to depart from the West Coast can set sail from San Francisco or Los Angeles. Ships from these ports travel to the Caribbean, Alaska, Canada and other far-flung destinations.
Where does Silversea sail?
Silversea’s destination map is extensive, with over 900 ports on all seven continents. Sailings are at least six days long, but trips can last several weeks to a month or more.
For those with the time and the money, Silversea offers World Cruises that travel from continent to continent in a global adventure that can take as many as 140 days.
How much does a Silversea cruise cost?
Silversea sailings are no discount venture, but the all-inclusive nature of each cruise adds value.
Meals, drinks, entertainment and onboard special events are all part of the price. The rates vary based on demand, destination and time of year.
There are two types of prices: “door-to-door,” which includes airport transfers and airfare, or “port-to-port,” which is the cruise fare without any transportation to or from the port.
Rates can vary from as low as $2,800 for a seven-day trip from Colombia to Florida to $94,700 for a 125-day expedition cruise from Chile to Norway.
Silversea also offers special fares for single travelers on select excursions, which provides a discount instead of paying the full cost of a double-occupancy cabin.
What is the best Silversea ship?
There are 13 ships in the Silversea fleet — with more scheduled for delivery in the coming years — ranging in size from 51 to 364 cabins. The best ship, however, will depend on the type of sailing you want.
The smallest ships are typically expedition ships that sail itineraries like the Galapagos or Antarctica. For example, the 100-passenger Silver Origin was Silversea’s first purpose-built destination ship, built explicitly for cruising in the Galapagos. It is also the most environmentally-friendly ship built by Silversea.
Another small ship is the Silver Explorer, with a capacity for 144 guests and a strengthened hull to sail in Antarctica and the Arctic safely.
On the other end of the spectrum, you have larger ships such as Silver Spirit, which was renovated in 2018. With space for 608 passengers, it spends much of its time sailing around Europe, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.
Ships like Silver Spirit look more like cruise ships, with amenities that include larger pools, lounges and plentiful dining options. Expedition ships are smaller by nature and therefore have fewer onboard facilities.
The best Silversea ship depends on the type of traveler you are, the destinations you want to visit, and the amenities you desire.
What is the newest Silversea ship?
Silver Nova is Silversea’s newest ship, with plans to set sail later this summer. It will also be the largest ship in the Silversea fleet, with space for 728 passengers. Coming in 2024 is a second ship of the same size, the Silver Ray.
These ships feature a new asymmetrical design that gives their interiors a more spacious feel. Additionally, they’ll have the largest pools in the Silversea fleet, and every suite will have a balcony.
What’s included in a Silversea cruise
As mentioned above, Silversea advertises its cruises as all-inclusive, and compared to many cruise lines, this is pretty accurate. Here’s what’s included with all Silversea cruises:
24-hour butler service.
Complimentary beverages, including alcohol, around the ship and in minibars.
Gourmet meals, including room service and specialty restaurants.
Gratuities.
Select shore excursions.
Wi-Fi access.
Onboard lectures and entertainment.
Passengers who opt for the door-to-door all-inclusive option will also receive the following:
Private transfers to and from their home airport.
Airfare to and from the port city, including international flights.
Transfers between the ship and the airport.
Overnight hotel stays in the port city on arrival or before returning home, if needed.
A few items are not included in the fare and will incur an additional cost:
Meals or accommodations while on shore.
Some shore excursions.
Reservation fees for select restaurants.
Laundry service.
Personal spa or beauty services.
Silversea loyalty program: Venetian Society
Unlike other cruise loyalty programs, Silversea’s program — the Venetian Society — does not award points. It doesn’t have elite status tiers, either. Instead, members earn “days” based on the length of each sailing. The more days they accrue, the more benefits they can receive.
Here’s what Venetian Society members can expect to receive based on the number of days accrued:
All members. By joining the program and completing your first sailing, you’re eligible for 5% savings on certain upcoming sailings. This can represent great value on expensive cruises, meaning signing up makes sense even if you only plan to sail occasionally.
100+ days. 5% savings on all future door-to-door sailings.
250+ days. 10% savings on all future door-to-door sailings.
350 days. Once you reach this level, you are eligible for one complimentary seven-day sailing.
500 days. Reaching this milestone means enjoying a complimentary 14-day trip.
500+ days. After this landmark, members will receive one complimentary seven-day trip for each additional 150 days they sail.
How to redeem Silversea days
The best part about the Venetian Society is that the benefits are cumulative. It’s not similar to a points program where once you redeem points, your balance gets lower until you earn more. With Venetian Society, you can take advantage of that perk once you hit the next milestone while enjoying previous bonuses.
For example, once you hit 350 days, you are eligible for a complimentary seven-day voyage. But, you can also take 10% off any door-to-door cruises — a perk you receive after reaching 250 days — you book after that.
Frequently asked questions
Does Silversea have free Wi-Fi?
Yes. Like most of its onboard amenities, Silversea cruises include basic Wi-Fi free of charge. Those in upper suites will receive free premium Wi-Fi speeds, and other guests can pay for a faster speed package. The prices vary by sailing and ship.
Is Silversea all-inclusive?
Yes, everything is included in the “port-to-port” fare. Adding airfare and ground transfers is part of the “door-to-door” offering.
How much is the Silversea drink package?
Drinks are included in the all-inclusive fare, so no additional drink package is offered.
Does Silversea require a covid vaccine or test?
No, but some destinations may have their requirements. For example, there may be some destinations or embarkation points where unvaccinated travelers must provide a negative covid test, and vaccinated travelers would have to show proof of receiving the vaccine. All requirements and protocols are subject to change.

From its beautiful beaches to eclectic dining, there are many reasons to call New Jersey home. This small state on the Eastern Seaboard boasts approximately 130 miles of coastline, dotted with seaside resorts. It’s home to one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America, Jersey City.
These multicultural cities and towns make New Jersey a hub for diverse dining, art, culture and history. Living in New Jersey also keeps you close to all the action of New York City and Philly. But nature lovers can swim, hike, cycle and even ski in state parks and outdoor recreation areas.
Offering a unique blend of things to do, deciding on the best place to live in New Jersey comes down to personal preference and budget. For the most part, the cost of living in New Jersey is above the national average. But there are a few areas where the cost of living is lower, so don’t let the high cost of living dissuade you. There are still affordable places to live around the state. Here’s a look at how the cost of living in New Jersey breaks down across the state for expenditures like housing and healthcare.
New Jersey housing prices
With one exception, the cost of living for housing in New Jersey sits above the national average. Those located within the Tri-State area top the charts, with the highest housing averages around the state. The Tri-State area, also known as the New York metropolitan area, encompasses New York City, New Jersey’s six biggest cities and parts of Connecticut and New York state. It’s the largest and most populous metro area in America.
With New York City being one of the most expensive places to live in the United States, naturally, cities within its metro area will also have high housing costs. But, before you resign yourself to sky-high rents, other parts of the state have more affordable housing.
This is what housing costs look like in cities around New Jersey. One example shows lower-than-national average housing costs in one area. The others show how average rents and housing costs vary across the New York metro area.
Morristown
Even though it’s located toward the western outskirts of the New York metro area, housing costs in Morristown are still up there at 37.8 percent above the national average. With its rich history and access to parks and wilderness areas, it’s considered one of the best places to live in New Jersey. But that clearly doesn’t mean affordable housing. Many people live in Morristown but commute to Newark or New York. As a popular bedroom community, that drives up housing prices.
Renting a one-bedroom apartment here costs an average of $2,315 per month, up 15 percent from last year. Two-bedroom apartments are up 6 percent to $2,927.
Buying a house in Morristown comes with some nasty sticker shock. Up 19.7 percent from last year, houses in Morristown have a median sales price of $718,325. That’s a big jump over the national average. So, whether you’re looking to rent or own in Morristown, you’ll be finding higher prices.
Newark
Newark, New Jersey’s most populous city, is right at the heart of the New York metro area in northeastern New Jersey. Being that close to New York City, it’s no surprise that the cost of housing here is higher than in other areas. At 51.3 percent above the national average, it has the highest housing average of our highlighted New Jersey cities.
Locals shell out an average of $2,705 for a one-bedroom apartment around Newark. That number is up 35 percent from last year. But the cost of a two-bedroom has declined 27 percent. You can find two-bedroom apartments for an average of $2,450. With these prices, it makes more sense to go for the cheaper two-bedroom option and have more space for less.
Housing costs in Newark have risen 17.7 percent from last year. Newark’s median sales price for a house is currently around $365,000, which is still below the national average.
Vineland
Located in southwestern New Jersey, Vineland is a cute, family-friendly town surrounded by farms and nature preserves. Its location near the southern end of the state, far from New York, means that rent prices are lower here. Housing costs here are 17.5 percent lower than the national average. With more affordable rents and great outdoor access, Vineland is a great option for budget-friendly living. It’s also just an hour away from Philadelphia.
Rent prices have stayed consistent here over the past year. A one-bedroom apartment costs an average of $937, the same as last year. Two-bedroom apartments have also seen no growth or decrease, holding steady at an average of $1,082 per month.
The home-buying market in Vineland has been on the rise over the past year, though, growing 15.9 percent. The median sales price for a home in Vineland is $231,750. That price is a fair bit lower than the national average of $430,695.
New Jersey food prices
From hoagies to pork rolls, New Jersey residents have no end to delicious things to dine on. Luckily, for the most part, the cost of living in New Jersey for food is only slightly above the national average. For overall average food prices, the cost of groceries in New Jersey is 8.7 percent above the national average. Locals spend between $3,201 to $3,600 on food per person annually. That comes out to $266 and $300 per month. But food costs do vary around the state. Here’s how grocery prices in some New Jersey cities stack up to the national average:
Vineland is 1.7 percent above the national average
Newark is 6.6 percent above the national average
Morristown is 12.5 percent above the national average
Vineland is the least expensive city for food on our list, with Morristown being the most expensive. Newark is a good middle point. But averages don’t tell the full picture. It’s possible the price of individual food items are the same in the most expensive and least expensive cities. Getting a dozen eggs in Vineland or Morristown costs the exact same at $1.83. If you’re picking up a half-gallon of milk, you’ll pay $2.77 in both Morristown and Newark. In Vineland, it’s only $2.55.
As such a multicultural state with so many different kinds of cuisines, dining out is huge here. So, the cost of going out to dinner will also vary depending on where you are. Going out for a nice three-course meal of Portuguese or Spanish food for two in Newark will set you back $72.50. In Morristown, you’ll pay 20.83 percent less at $60 for the same kind of special night out.
New Jersey utility prices
Overall, the cost of living for utilities in New Jersey is higher than the national average. Utilities include services and items like energy, water and internet that are essential for your home. Compared to the national average, this is how expensive it is to pay for utilities in these New Jersey cities.
Vineland is 11.5 percent above the national average
Newark is 11.3 percent above the national average
Morristown is 0.9 percent above the national average
New Jersey residents get their electricity from a mix of natural gas and nuclear energy, as well as some renewable solar energy. The state sources its water mainly from surface-water resources like lakes, rivers and reservoirs.
You’ll be paying less for energy in Morristown. The average monthly bill for all your energy costs comes out to around $181.01. The most expensive city for energy is Vineland at $22.15.
Internet is another essential utility that most modern households require. You’ll be paying more for internet access in Newark, where 60 megabits per second cost $85.57 per month. But in Morristown, it’s only $59. That’s a big price difference of 45.04 percent.
New Jersey transportation prices
From bus to train to light rail, there are plenty of ways to get around New Jersey. Providers like NJ Transit offer public transportation throughout the state, while some individual cities and towns also operate their own mass transit. Some cities within the New York metro area also have access to larger public transportation systems like the Metropolitan Transit Authority.
Using public transportation is a great way to save money on things like gas and car insurance. Since many New Jersey residents commute to New York for work, mass transit can save time and money. But it does depend on how long your commute is. Since New Jersey’s mass transportation costs are above the national average, you’ll need to determine for yourself if it’s a money-saver or not. Here’s how far above the national average each New Jersey stands in terms of mass transit costs:
Vineland is 6.6 percent below the national average
Newark is 7 percent above the national average
Morristown is 6.2 percent above the national average
All three cities are pretty close, but Newark wins out for being the most expensive. The public transit systems in the New York metro area are the most extensive. Here’s a breakdown of the different transportation options and costs in some of these cities.
NJ Transit in Newark
Consisting of buses and light rail, Newark gets its public transportation from NJ Transit. Part of the larger state-wide network, NJ Transit offers rides both around town and to other cities, counties and states.
Fares vary by type of transportation and zone. Starting adult rates for a one-way bus ticket start at $1.60 for Zone 1, $2.55 for Zone 2 and $3.15 for Zone 3. Transfer fees cost $0.75 extra. Monthly passes are available but similarly vary by zone, routes and destinations. Using the Light Rail to get around town, a single adult fare is $1.60 per ride and $59 for a monthly pass.
If you prefer to use your car to get around, you may need to use the New Jersey Turnpike. This controlled-access, toll road goes throughout the state and passes by Newark. If you need to use it to get into New York or go elsewhere in New Jersey, you’ll have to pay a toll. This fee varies depending on how long you use the turnpike. For example, if you’re driving from Newark International Airport to the Holland Tunnel in nearby Jersey City, you’ll pay around $5.65. You can use their toll calculator to determine the exact fare. If you were to travel the entire length of the Turnpike in a standard 2-axle passenger vehicle, you’d pay $19.43 with the E-ZPass system.
If you do plan on using your car to get around, monthly parking passes average $120 in Newark.
With a high transit score of 65, it’s easy and affordable to get around Newark. As a tightly-condensed urban center, Newark is also very walk-friendly. It’s actually one of the most walk-friendly cities for renters in America. Its walk score is 78, so you can easily navigate neighborhoods on foot. But it’s best to leave bikes at home or only use them in parks. Newark’s bike score is a lowly 54.
NJ Transit in Morristown
Morristown also gets its mass transit provided by NJ Transit, with bus and commuter rail. Both connect to Newark’s Light Rail system.
Fares for NJ Transit in Morristown similarly vary by zone and type of service used. Bus lines start at $1.60 for a single adult fare and go up depending on route length and zones. The commuter rail train has similar pricing starting around $2.25 for the Morristown line. Monthly passes cost $60. But again, these prices vary widely by zone and length of ride. You should also buy your ticket before boarding to avoid a $5 surcharge.
If you don’t need to use mass transit to commute into and out of Morristown, it’s easy to walk to and from your destination here. The town’s walk score is a high 71. But it’s not quite as bike-friendly, ranking only 44 for bike score.
New Jersey healthcare prices
Healthcare is one of the few New Jersey cost of living categories that consistently falls below the national average. But it’s important to take those figures with a grain of salt. It’s very difficult to determine an accurate average for healthcare since costs vary widely from person to person. There are big variations even within cities or regions. Different factors can drive up healthcare costs for different people, such as pre-existing conditions or the cost of prescription drugs.
For the most part, though, New Jersey offers affordable, quality healthcare. Many New Jersey towns and cities also rank well locally and nationally in terms of overall public health. Morristown, in particular, is a very healthy place to live. But Morristown is also a perfect example of how healthcare costs are so difficult to average. Despite being such a healthy town, healthcare costs in Morristown are actually the closest to the national average of our three cities. Here’s how healthcare costs in these N.J. cities compare to the national average:
Vineland is 6.5 percent below the national average
Newark is 2.4 percent below the national average
Morristown is 0.9 percent below the national average
To illustrate this, here’s what you can expect to pay to go to the doctor’s office in different cities:
Vineland: $95
Newark: $91
Morristown: $104.86
Going to the dentist is also the most expensive in Morristown at $120.31. The most affordable place to go for a cleaning and dental check-up is in Vineland at $103.13.
No matter what, it’s important to plan annual visits to all your major doctors to stay on top of your health.
New Jersey goods and services prices
Along with housing, groceries and other costs of living categories in New Jersey, there’s another essential spending that takes up a chunk of a monthly budget. A miscellaneous good or service could be something you get fairly frequently, like going to the dry cleaners or heading out to the movies.
The combined cost of all these items and services can definitely sway a monthly budget. That’s why it’s important to compare the local costs of goods and services to the national average.
Vineland is 5.3 percent below the national average
Newark is 12.5 percent above the national average
Morristown is 0.9 percent above the national average
Newark ranks high above the other cities for the most expensive goods and services. This is no surprise considering it’s right in the heart of the New York metro area. But just because a city has higher or lower averages for miscellaneous goods and services doesn’t mean all items will reflect this. Some items will be more expensive in less expensive cities. For example, it’s more expensive to go to the dry cleaners in Morristown where it costs $13.88. It’s the cheapest in Newark at $12.28. Going to the movies is also more expensive in Morristown, costing $14.24 compared to $13.13 in Newark.
If you have a family, paying for childcare will be a big part of your monthly goods and services budget. Childcare costs can vary widely by city and state. With New York boasting some of the highest national prices for childcare, you would think childcare would be the highest in Newark. But not so. Paying for a month of private preschool or kindergarten only costs $500 per child in Newark. But, in Morristown, with its large commuter community, that number jumps 68.75 percent to $1,600 per month. If you always need to get into the city for work, it stands to reason that childcare costs would be more in-demand and therefore higher.
Taxes in New Jersey
New Jersey’s statewide sales tax is 6.625 percent. To put that in perspective, if you go out and spend $1,000 on a giant order of hoagies for a party, you’ll have to pay $66.25 on top of that for tax.
While that’s a lot that adds to the cost of living in New Jersey, the upside is that the state doesn’t have local or city sales tax. You’re paying the same rate no matter where you are in the state.
Vineland has a combined tax rate of 6.625 percent
Newark has a combined tax rate of 6.625 percent
Morristown has a combined tax rate of 6.625 percent
The other kind of tax to consider is income tax. New Jersey implements a graduated income tax rate, going from 1.40 percent up to 10.75 percent. New Jersey also has high property taxes, which is something to consider if you want to buy a house here.
How much do you need to earn to live in New Jersey?
With the elevated cost of living in New Jersey, how much do you need to earn to live in the Garden State? It’s recommended that you only spend around 30 percent of your gross monthly income on housing. This is due to the fact that housing is usually the biggest monthly expense. But you want to have ample money left over for groceries, healthcare and the odd movie night out.
Since the average statewide rent is $2,414, you’d need to make $8,046 per month to fit the 30 percent rule. That comes out to $96,552 per year. At $85,245, the median household income in New Jersey falls short of that figure. This could mean that some households pay more for housing than the recommended 30 percent.
To determine if you can comfortably afford housing in New Jersey, crunch some numbers using our rent calculator.

If you’re looking for the archetypal New England lifestyle, Vermont is a dream come true. This idyllic New England state has lush forests, rolling mountains and scenic lakes. Covered bridges and charming towns dot the landscapes, giving locals near-instant access to hiking, boating and skiing in the winter. Every fall, Vermont cities are also treated to the spectacular display of the changing foliage. All those tree-filled forests also help produce Vermont’s famous maple syrup.
Unfortunately, living in the Green Mountain State will also cost you a fair amount of green. The overall cost of living in Vermont is 16.9 percent higher than the national average. But don’t despair. Understanding how the cost of living breaks down around the state will help you find the right place in Vermont to call home. Let’s dive into the cost of living in different cities around Vermont and what you can expect to pay for various necessities like housing or groceries.
Vermont housing prices
Housing costs in Vermont are the most expensive cost of living category in the state. Considering that Vermont exclusively has small cities and towns, the cost of housing is discouraging. Everyone wants a taste of that charming small-town life, but such towns also have limited housing and space to grow. However, there are still ways you can find affordable housing even in the biggest city. Let’s take a look at what rents are like in Vermont’s largest city.
Burlington
Located on the shores of Lake Champlain, Burlington is Vermont’s most populous city with 44,781 residents. Together with nearby South Burlington, it makes up the greater Burlington-South Burlington metro area. This vibrant college town is home to the University of Vermont and Champlain College. As such, the town has a lively urban center and is a regional hub for art, culture, dining and shopping. It’s considered one of the best places to live in the state.
The cost of housing in this college town is 37.1 percent higher than the national average. Usually, housing in college towns is more on the affordable side. But if you want a unit larger than a one-bedroom for a reasonable price, you may need to find roommates. One-bedroom apartments in Burlington go for an average of $1,100 per month. This amount is down 29 percent from last year.
But two-bedroom units are truly expensive at $1,975 a month. That number is also down 18 percent from the previous year. Three-bedrooms are slightly cheaper at $1,725 with no change from last year. Although pricey, both one-bedroom and two-bedroom units in Burlington go for less than the national average.
Burlington’s housing market isn’t much better, either. Prices have jumped 27.2 percent from last year, making the median sales price for a home in Burlington around $605,000. That’s quite a jump from the national median sale price of $430,695.
Vermont food prices
Going to the grocery store or dining out is also going to cost you big in Vermont. Many locals complain that they pay a lot more for food here. The data backs it up. Grocery costs in Burlington are 3.7 percent above the national average. Vermonters are also among the top states for annual food spending. In a year, the average Vermonter will spend over $4,001 annually on food per person. That’s over $333 per month.
To illustrate how these high averages look in real-time when browsing the aisles of a Burlington grocery store, let’s look at the costs for some basic food items. A dozen eggs cost $2.23. For comparison, these dozen eggs would cost $2.07 in the neighboring state of New Hampshire. Picking up a half-gallon of milk in Burlington will set you back $3.25. Grabbing some steak? It comes out to $13.20. Add rising inflation to these costs and grocery bills around Vermont are skyrocketing.
It’s not just grocery costs that are high. Higher food costs overall also impact prices at local restaurants. If you want to go out on a fancy date night for a three-course meal, it will cost around $60. In the state capital of Montpelier, the cost jumps 27.27 percent to $82.50.
Vermont utility prices
One thing about the cost of living in Vermont is that you can feel good about paying for utilities like electricity. The vast majority of its electricity comes from renewable resources like hydropower. In fact, Vermont has been one of the forerunners in leading the renewable energy charge. If knowing your power is coming from a more sustainable source is important to know, Vermont is one of the best states to live in.
Living in Burlington, your utility costs are about 22.2 percent above the national average. That means your total energy bill for the month will come out to around $249.93. But it’s for a good cause. In 2015, Burlington became the first city to run completely on renewable energy in the U.S. On both the state and local levels, Vermont is a pioneering force for renewable energy in modern cities.
Another important utility to consider is the internet. Lots of smaller towns and rural areas around the state still lack high-speed internet. Luckily, Burlington boasts high-speed connections for about $81.43 a month for a 60 megabits-per-second package. In a college town, having good internet is a necessity. If you plan to live in Burlington or in major towns like Montpelier or Stowe, having access to the internet isn’t a problem. But other places throughout the state aren’t as well-connected. Luckily, plans are in the works to bring high-speed internet to other parts of the state. The average internet bill in Vermont is $30, compared to the national average of $56. So, internet cost and access vary widely throughout Vermont. If internet access is a necessity for you, that’s something to consider when deciding where to live.
Vermont transportation prices
Similar to other costs of living categories in Vermont, the price of transportation in Vermont is higher than the national average. In Burlington, transportation is 19.3 percent above the national average. Not every town in Vermont has public transportation. But, most of the bigger cities and towns like Rutland and Montpelier do operate bus routes. Inter-city and regional bus routes exist, as well.
Green Mountain Transit Authority in Burlington
Consisting of a fleet of buses, Green Mountain Transit Authority provides mass transit services to Burlington, Chittenden County and neighboring cities like Montpelier. Fares vary by local routes in different counties. In Chittenden County where Burlington is, a single adult fare costs $1.50. A monthly pass is $40. However, Green Mountain Transit Authority buses are all currently fare-free through June 30, 2023. So, if you use the bus to get around Burlington, you’ll already be saving money on things like gas and parking.
As a close-knit college town, it’s also easy to get around Burlington on foot or by bike. The town boasts a high walk score of 69 and an even higher bike score of 81.
Vermont healthcare prices
Vermont is often heralded as being one of the healthiest states in America. Healthcare costs here are higher than the national average. But Vermonters are clearly receiving top-notch care for such high prices toward the cost of living in Vermont. However, it’s important to note that healthcare costs vary widely by person. Based on factors like pre-existing conditions or higher-priced prescription drugs, two people living in the same town may pay wildly different rates for healthcare. That’s why it’s so difficult to determine accurate healthcare averages. But to give you a rough baseline, Burlington is 11.7 percent above the national average. A doctor’s visit will cost about $126 on average.
Going to the dentist in Burlington is even more expensive at $137. For those prices, though, you’re being seen at some of the state’s premier medical facilities.
Vermont goods and services prices
Since most of Vermont’s other cost of living categories exceed the national average, naturally, the cost of miscellaneous goods and services is also higher than the national average. This category covers all assorted spending for non-essential but still important items and services like getting a haircut or going to the dry cleaners. In Burlington, these costs are 1.8 higher than the national average.
If you spill some sticky Vermont maple syrup on your shirt, taking it to the dry cleaners will run you a bill of around $22.95. Going to get a haircut will cost about $24. If you want to see a movie, tickets are around $11.75.
There’s another important subcategory of miscellaneous goods and services you need to consider. That is the cost of childcare. Sadly for parents in the Burlington area, you’ll be paying the most to have someone keep an eye on your kids. A month of private preschool or kindergarten comes with a hefty price tag of $1,138.67. But in the state capital of Montpelier, it’s only $300. That’s a price difference of 279.56 percent.
Taxes in Vermont
Vermont’s statewide sales tax is 6 percent. If you go out and buy $1,000 worth of premium Vermont maple syrup, you’ll be paying $60 on top of that for tax.
Burlington adds a 1 percent city tax onto the state sales tax, making the combined tax rate 7 percent in the city.
A $10 difference is rarely a big deal. But with prices being what they are in Vermont, $10 is the difference between picking up some extra grocery items and not.
How much do I need to earn to live in Vermont?
The cost of living in Vermont is clearly up there. So, does it fit with your budget? When considering if you can afford to live somewhere, the most important category to consider is housing. This is because housing costs usually take the biggest chunk out of your monthly budget. The general rule of thumb is that you should only spend around 30 percent of your gross monthly income on housing.
Considering that the average monthly rent in Burlington is $1,100, you’d need to make $3,666 a month to adhere to the 30 percent rule. Annually, that comes out to an income of $43,992. Vermont’s median household income is $63,477. So, even though housing costs are higher here, higher household incomes offset it.

Living in Vermont
Vermont is definitely not the cheapest state to live in. Everything from food prices to housing costs is higher than the national average. But you get a lot of bang for your buck here, too. From friendly communities to beautiful landscapes, it’s a wonderful place to call home if you want to connect with nature and live a more relaxed lifestyle. That is if your budget can accommodate the cost of living in Vermont.

Job fairs are designed to connect employers with prospective employees. They can be geared toward specific industries, skill levels or workers from a specific demographic — for example, a job fair geared exclusively toward women, people of color or veterans, according to the careers website Monster.
Of course, there are plenty of job fairs that cater toward multiple industries, and generally aim to connect people with companies looking to grow their workforces.
The main objective of a job fair is simple: to meet employers and other professionals in your industry, learn about career opportunities, sell yourself and your skills, and (hopefully!) make a connection that leads to a job. Knowing how to best utilize job fairs can ensure you get the most out of the experience.
How do you find job fairs?
You can find information about upcoming job fairs online, especially on LinkedIn. Since the goal of job fairs is to attract as many companies and candidates as possible, the fairs are typically well-advertised online. A simple Google search for career or job fairs in your area can show you upcoming fairs and events.
You can also search for job fairs by industry or demographic — for instance, job fairs that cater to STEM companies or the LGBTQ+ community. On that note, double check that the job fair you’re planning to attend isn’t designed for an industry or group that’s irrelevant to you. And if you don’t have access to a computer, your local public library should offer internet access free of charge.
Also, if you’re going to a job fair, make sure you’re not accidentally signed up for a hiring event. Hiring events are very different from job or career fairs. At hiring events, companies conduct on-site interviews with candidates for open positions, according to Indeed, the career listings website. These events require much more specific preparation than job fairs or career fairs, where the objective is to connect candidates with their peers and employers in their industry.
What to wear to a job fair
You can dress business casual for most job fairs, according to Jobcase, a careers resource website. Think, not quite a suit with cufflinks, but definitely not blue jeans. Jobcase recommends you dress “one level up” from your current role; so if you’d be OK wearing slacks and a polo to work, consider wearing dress pants, a shirt and a tie.
Some ideal tops include button-downs, polo shirts, blouses and dress shirts — if possible, something with a collar.
Pants, slacks, chinos, khakis, dress pants or a skirt are all great options for a job fair. Wear solid and neutral colors, keeping patterns to a minimum (unless you’re interviewing at Chanel, of course). And make sure anything you wear is clean, crisp, ironed and stain-free.
If you wear a skirt or dress, it’s best to play it safe and not wear anything cut above the knee, according to the Career Services Office at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. It’s a little antiquated, but lots of people have traditional ideas of what constitutes an “office-appropriate” outfit — and one of them might be in a position to hire you.
Leave the sandals or sneakers at home in favor of dressier shoes, according to advice from the State University of New York. Closed-toe dress shoes — like Oxfords, brogues and loafers — are always a good bet.
Flats, dressy mules and heels — all closed toe — are great options, too, though you might want to save the strappy stilettos for a night out. Your heels shouldn’t be more than 1 or 2 inches high, according to Rutgers University’s Office of Career Exploration and Success.
If in doubt, Rutgers recommends you check the dress code requirements for some companies in your industry, or even a company you’d like to work for.
What to bring to a job fair
What you should bring to a job fair depends on your industry. Generally speaking, you’ll want to bring several copies of your resume and business cards, according to Randstad, an international human resources firm. Also, depending on your industry, you should bring a portfolio showcasing your past projects, designs or campaigns.
You can also bring “targeted resumes,” according to Indeed. Unlike a standard resume, targeted resumes highlight skills and achievements relevant to a specific industry. For example, if you’re in sales but want to pivot to customer service, a targeted resume might highlight your customer retention or communication skills.
Make sure your business cards include your name, home city, contact information — phone and email — and links to your LinkedIn or professional website, per Indeed. You should also include either your existing job title and employer, or a general job title that covers the breadth of your experience.
Finally, don’t forget to prepare your “elevator pitch,” recommends Randstad. That means being able to summarize yourself, your skills and your career goals in 30 seconds or less.
How to prepare for a job fair
The night before the job fair, go to your LinkedIn and make a post about the job fair, says Johnny Roccia, director of career services at Ama La Vida, a career and life coaching firm. (And if you don’t have a LinkedIn, make one, Roccia says.)
According to Roccia, a job fair will most likely have a hashtag, so look it up and include it in your post. You can then use your LinkedIn to keep track of everybody you meet at the fair by quickly sending connection requests. You can even make a QR code that links back to your LinkedIn profile, Roccia says. Include the QR code on business cards, a professional folio, or even set it as your phone background for easy accessibility.
Another big tip from Roccia: Don’t think of job fairs only as places to get jobs. Rather, think of them as networking fairs that’ll get you closer to the job you want — and help you meet people who could advance your career in the future.
“Job hunting is something that fades away, and you don’t have to do as much if you focus on building your network throughout your whole career,” says Roccia.
And don’t think of a job fair as a failure if you don’t walk away with a job. Rather, think of it as a chance for you to meet people in your industry and build connections that could eventually lead to jobs.
“You can be 50 steps closer to your next goal because you don’t know which one of the recruiters at that job fair is going to be hiring for your perfect thing next month,” says Roccia.
Senators Tina Smith (D-Minn.) and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) introduced this week new legislation that aims to address a shortage of affordable housing in rural communities. The lawmakers say the bill would represent “the most significant Rural Housing Service reforms [in] years.”
If passed, the bill, known as Rural Housing Service Reform Act of 2023, would “improve federal rural housing programs, cut red tape, and strengthen the supply of affordable housing” and would “improve and build upon a number of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) rural housing programs,” according to a press release from Sen. Smith’s office about the bill.
“This legislation makes important improvements and updates to the Rural Housing Service that will create and preserve affordable housing opportunities in South Dakota,” said Sen. Rounds. “As we face an affordable housing crisis across the nation, I look forward to working with my colleagues to get these important, bipartisan updates signed into law.”
In particular, the bill aims to fix what the senators describe as a “longstanding problem for [515] properties that were financed by the USDA decades ago and now have maturing mortgages, by making it easier for non-profits to acquire those properties and by decoupling rental assistance so that assistance doesn’t disappear when those mortgages mature.”
Otherwise known as “rural renting housing loans,” USDA Section 515 loans are “direct, competitive mortgage loans made to provide affordable multifamily rental housing for very low-, low-, and moderate-income families, elderly persons, and persons with disabilities.”
The bill would make it easier for non-profits to acquire properties with Section 515 loans. It would also decouple the related rental assistance so that the assistance doesn’t disappear when the mortgages mature.
In addition, the bill would make permanent a USDA pilot program that provides mortgages to Native American communities through partnerships with community development financial institutions (CDFIs).
Technology is also a focus of the bill. In addition to the other priorities, the bill would allow the USDA to make better investments in its information technology infrastructure. The senators contend that this would allow the USDA to “process loans more quickly and with less staff time wasted on paperwork or manual data entry.”
Another area of focus are the USDA’s methods of measuring incomes, which are “outdated,” according to language in the bill. If passed, the bill bring those methods in line with the way incomes are measured by HUD.
The bill would also “modernize” the USDA’s foreclosure practices to better ensure affordability, the senators said.
Smith and Rounds have been heavily focused on affordable rural housing issues recently, with both senators spearheading hearings on the topic in order to develop a plan.
“Without a safe, affordable place to live, nothing else in your life works. Not your job, not your education, not your health,” Sen. Smith said in a statement. “We know that the housing crisis is hurting communities across the country, and the problem is particularly acute in rural places. This legislation is the direct result of bipartisan hearings and conversations with stakeholders who helped identify ways we can make federal rural housing programs work better for people struggling to find a safe, affordable place to live.”
Natalie Maxwell, managing attorney for the National Housing Law Project, recently told The Hill that approximately 560,000 renters who live in apartments financed by Section 515 are under threat due to the mortgages maturing or due to a loss of eligibility related to other reasons.
“In rural communities, the Section 515 program has been a critical source of affordable housing especially for low-income seniors and people with disabilities,” Maxwell told The Hill. “Congress can and must do more to preserve these properties for families living in poverty.”
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has also turned its attention toward the needs of rural areas recently, including through proposals that seek to expand broadband internet access to a greater number of rural communities.
Nothing says vacation like a trip to the beach, where the ocean washes away our day-to-day lives, a cold drink helps beat the heat, and the only care in the world is remembering to apply (and reapply) sunscreen.
A great beach vacation usually starts with a great place to stay — and for points and miles enthusiasts (and those new to the game), one of the best ways to get a top-notch beach resort is booking through World of Hyatt, considered the most award-friendly hotel program out there.
The U.S. is full of both great beaches and great Hyatt properties where the sun and sand are as friendly as World of Hyatt’s award chart. Here, you’ll find Hyatt resorts — from the iconic beaches of Maui to the East Coast sands near Charleston, South Carolina — and plenty of family-friendly beaches perfect for all ages.
Just don’t forget the power of the World of Hyatt program and how easy it is to book some of the portfolio’s best beach resorts by transferring points from credit card reward programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards, so all of your summer dreams can come true.

Get ready to unlock a treasure trove of invaluable insights and expert advice that will revolutionize your vacation rental property. In this Redfin article, we dive deep into the world of vacation rentals, revealing powerful strategies to make your property shine and leave guests in awe. From savvy investments that boost your property’s allure to crafting an unforgettable resort-like experience, forging strategic partnerships, and crafting personalized guest interactions, we’ll equip you with the knowledge to exceed expectations and achieve unrivaled success in the fiercely competitive world of vacation rentals.
Whether you own a vacation rental property in the enchanting city of Orlando, FL, or the picturesque town of San Marcos, CA, this comprehensive resource is tailored to elevate your rental business to new heights. Here are 18 transformational secrets to maximize guest satisfaction, earn rave reviews, and propel your property to the one of the most sought after homes in the area.
1. Make your rental stand out
“To maintain a five-star rental property, you’ll want to go above and beyond tenant expectations. Our data shows that including a washer and dryer, upgrading to newer appliances, and providing freshly painted walls in neutral tones will not only make your rental stand out, but also make the process of finding great tenants faster,” recommends Doorstead. “Moreover, by ensuring access to a responsive property manager, you can guarantee that all aspects of the home are well taken care of, truly enhancing the tenant experience.”
2. Pretend your vacation rental is a five-star resort
“The most important thing to remember about managing a vacation rental is that this is the hospitality business, not the landlord and tenant business,” shares Todd Ortscheid, Co-Owner of Revolution Rental Management. “You have to think of what you’re offering more like a hotel or resort than a traditional rental property. This means cleanliness, fast response time, desirable amenities, and a well-maintained property. The more you think of your property as a five-star resort, the better off you’ll be.”
3. Consider creating strategic partnerships
“We recommend partnering with a company that specializes in exclusive vacation rental portfolios. If your property is a top-tier, five-star rental, it’s essential to align it with a company whose branding and services cater to the discerning needs of luxury clientele,” recommends Gary Doss, Co-Owner of SoCal Vacations. “Larger companies that offer a broad range of properties may not be able to meet the high expectations and unique demands of this premium market segment.”
4. Personalize communication
“To ensure a successful guest experience, effective communication plays a pivotal role. It is crucial to make your guests feel genuinely welcomed, leaving a lasting impression. One way to achieve this is by remembering their return and incorporating delightful surprises. Consider offering their favorite snacks accompanied by a bottle of wine, arranging fresh flowers, and providing a personalized welcome message upon their arrival,” recommends Ellie Paget, CEO of HomeSlice Stays.
“Prompt responsiveness is of utmost importance when it comes to addressing guest requests or concerns. Aim to respond to them in a timely manner, never exceeding a 15-minute timeframe. This level of attentiveness demonstrates your commitment to their satisfaction and enhances their overall experience.
By prioritizing personalized communication, you can create an exceptional guest experience that fosters satisfaction and builds positive relationships.”
5. Decorate with style
“When it comes to guest experience and satisfaction, décor has the potential to make a significant difference in how guests perceive your rental property. To ensure an exceptional experience, it is crucial to infuse your property with chic and stylish decor, incorporating appealing color schemes and well-curated furnishings,” recommends Ellie Paget.
“To achieve a truly unique and captivating aesthetic, consider leveraging the expertise of our dedicated team. They can assist you in designing your home, helping you create an environment that not only catches the attention of potential guests through eye-catching marketing images but also provides a one-of-a-kind experience during their stay.
By investing in stylish decor and enlisting professional guidance, you can elevate your rental property’s overall appeal, command top dollar, and leave a lasting impression on your guests.”
6. Make sure you have security and safety measures
“To prioritize the safety and security of your guests, it is important to emphasize on security and safety measures. Install reliable locks, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers. Provide clear instructions on emergency procedures and ensure your guests feel secure throughout their stay. A focus on safety gives guests peace of mind and contributes to their overall satisfaction,” recommends Damir Dumo from Chalet.
“Smart locks with rotating access keys for each guest are must-haves nowadays. We use a smart home automation system that can be remotely managed for all of our homes.”
7. Leverage guest’s reviews
“Pay attention to guest feedback and reviews,” says Damir Dumo. “Actively seek feedback from your guests and use it to improve your property and services. Address any concerns promptly and implement suggestions that align with your goals. By consistently evolving based on guest feedback, you’ll maintain a high level of guest satisfaction and enhance your reputation as a top-notch rental property.
Ask for a five-star review on the day the guest checks out. If it wasn’t a five-star experience, ask the guest to give feedback directly to you.”
8. Discover your secret formula to winning a rave review
“We’ve found that rave reviews are the secret to creating successful, five-star rental properties,” says ALL IN. “This begins with maintaining excellent communication with our owners, guests, and community management teams. Maintaining a meticulous standard of cleaning, offering modern amenities, and assuring attention to every detail are non-negotiables that must always be upheld as a standard.
We invite the input of our guests and respond promptly to their questions, needs, and feedback. Creating memorable experiences keeps them wanting to share their experience with others.”
9. Elevate your guest’s stay with tailored upsells
“When catering to today’s travelers, it’s important to go beyond providing accommodation and focus on creating memorable experiences. Enhance your guests’ stay by offering exciting upsells and activities that align with your property’s location,” says Kennedy Williams from Mount.
“For instance, if you’re near a beach, consider providing e-bikes, or if you’re situated by a lake, offer kayaks. By incorporating these quality add-ons and upsells, you eliminate the guesswork and reduce trip planning stress for your guests, ensuring your property is a memorable stay for all the right reasons.”
10. Elevate your guest experience through realistic promises and delightful surprises
“The top-performing property managers consistently prioritize the basics of a well-maintained property, comfortable beds, and clean linens to create a memorable guest experience. They also excel in attentive guest communication, providing timely and personalized responses that make guests feel valued and supported,” mentions Hostaway.
“They’re also careful in setting realistic expectations by promoting property highlights without overpromising, along with adding delightful touches like unique decor, outdoor games, or welcome gifts, further enhancing the guest experience.”
11. Thoughtfully prepare your guest’s needs before they arrive
“Take the time to think about your guest experience from their perspective,” recommends Floorspace. “By anticipating their requests, you can provide the amenities, information, and special touches that will make their stay seamless and memorable, while also reducing the amount of communication required.
It’s also helpful to keep in mind the benefits of providing a positive guest experience, which can’t really be overstated. Not only will you garner more five-star reviews, but you’ll also increase your chances of repeat and direct bookings.”
12. Set a competitive pricing strategy
“One thing that often gets overlooked is pricing strategy. You can have high occupancy throughout the year, but if your pricing is not competitive, you will not reach your highest earning potential,” recommends Humberto Pacheco, CEO of Naya Homes. “You will need to research similar listings in your area and take into account factors such as location, size, amenities, and seasonal demand.”
13. Automate communication
“Automating communication in a natural tone through templates or automated messages streamlines your interactions with guests while maintaining a personalized touch,” suggests Alex Withorn from Thorn Point Vacation Rentals. “This approach allows you to experiment with different messaging strategies, refine your communication based on guest responses, and deliver consistently excellent customer service without guests realizing it’s not manual correspondence.
Investing effort in repeat business can significantly contribute to ensuring another great review. By fostering strong relationships with guests and providing exceptional experiences, you increase the likelihood of them returning, resulting in positive reviews from satisfied repeat guests.”
14. Harness the power of preemptive reviews
“When you give guests a five-star review, specifically letting them know before they leave their own review can encourage reciprocity and forgiveness. By expressing gratitude and acknowledging their positive experience, you create a positive feedback loop that encourages guests to leave similarly favorable reviews,” says Alex Withorn from Thorn Point Vacation Rentals
“Being upfront about expectations and educating guests about the review process is crucial for ensuring positive reviews. Transparent communication sets the stage for mutual understanding and helps guests provide feedback that aligns with their expectations, leading to more favorable reviews.”
15. Ensure your guests have a streamlined experience checking in and checking out
“Being in the cleaning industry for so long, I found that attention to detail, open communication, consistency, and streamlined processes leads to a five-star rental experience,” says Celestial Cleaning Service. “Every little thing counts, from beginning to end. The way your entrance is presented with wine and chocolates and a personalized letter, to the ease of checking out. Ensuring all staff members associated with delivering a five-star experience is up to date with your standards in delivering a great experience is key.”
16. Create a cleaning schedule
“To ensure a consistently high standard of cleanliness and maintenance in your vacation rental, it is important to establish a comprehensive cleaning schedule. This schedule should encompass tasks that need to be performed daily, weekly, quarterly, and seasonally,” recommends Jacqueline Barbosa from Morfin Cleaning Services.
“Examples of such tasks include carpet cleaning, window washing, and high dusting. Consider small details such as re-caulking, checking batteries, lightbulbs, filters, and even painting the unit if necessary. It is crucial to use quality products and professional cleaning services to ensure that every area, including appliances and windows, receives proper care.
Attention to detail is key when managing a rental property. In platforms like Airbnb, linens and bedding should be in excellent condition, and all appliances must work properly. Guests should have access to all necessary amenities such as toilet paper and soap, and a complete set of cooking utensils should be provided. It is important to regularly inspect these details and replace anything that is worn or damaged.”
17. Conduct inspections
“To maintain a high-quality vacation rental, it is important to regularly inspect, maintain, and upgrade the unit, including appliances and amenities,” says Jacqueline. “Providing a comprehensive guide for guests, which includes information on internet access, streaming services, local attractions, and useful tips, enhances their experience.
“Essential amenities and toiletries such as toilet paper, soap, and dish soap should be provided and regularly restocked after every visitor. Maintaining open communication with guests, checking in upon arrival, and seeking their feedback throughout their stay are key to providing excellent customer service and ensuring a positive guest experience.”
18. Provide uninterrupted guest service anytime, anywhere
“Providing a smooth and memorable guest experience is essential to maintaining a five-star rental. This involves communicating promptly with guests (no matter what time of the day or night), solving guest problems in a timely manner, and giving guests the tools to create the vacation of their dreams,” shares Sam Ripley from LocalVR.
19. Provide perfectly maintained appliances, ample storage space, and an inviting ambiance for your guests
“When it comes to keeping a five-star rental property, I recommend that all appliances and technology be well maintained and in excellent working condition,” suggests Norma Reyen, Professional Organizer and Owner of Simply Fresh Interiors. “I also recommend making sure that there is enough storage space, such as drawers, cabinetry, shelving, and hanging options. Having an appropriate amount of storage allows for a clean and decluttered space that all guests can enjoy. Lastly, maintaining a fresh-smelling home with good lighting and an airy ambiance will make your rental home memorable.”
20. Monitor booking requests
“Be communicative and professional, but warm and friendly. Don’t allow anyone to book without maintaining a standard; for example, guests must have previous and recent positive five-star reviews,” recommends Michael Skomina, from Host Easy BnB. “Liaise with your cleaners and laundry service, as they are the crux of the business and the most important asset to your success. Follow up and inspect after cleans; if necessary, guide and provide feedback in positive ways to help your services provide the best possible standard that you desire.”
Higher education could soon become more affordable for more than 700,000 of the incarcerated people in the U.S. Starting July 1, they’ll become eligible for Pell Grants for the first time in nearly 30 years, regardless of sentence length or conviction.
Pell Grants are a type of need-based financial aid from the federal government that gives recipients up to $7,395 per academic year to cover college costs like tuition, books and other fees. Unlike a loan, the grants never need to be repaid; students qualify based on financial need.
Incarcerated people — those in juvenile justice facilities and local, state and federal correctional facilities — will be able to use these Pell awards to pay for prison education programs (PEPs), which can lead to credentials like a professional certificate, an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree from a partner university.
Though the change is effective July 1, students may not be able to enroll in a PEP using Pell Grants immediately, says Ruth Delaney, associate initiative director at the Vera Institute of Justice focused on education reform in prisons. Some programs may start this fall, she says, but even then, enrollment won’t begin until later in the summer.
Here’s what you need to know about the Pell Grant expansion for prison education programs and how incarcerated students can access these funds.
Impact of Pell expansion for incarcerated students
Without access to Pell Grants, higher education has been virtually out of reach for most incarcerated people, who earn an average minimum wage of 86 cents per hour in typical prison jobs, according to a 2017 analysis by the Prison Policy Initiative, a nonprofit public policy think tank. There were nearly 800 PEPs in the early 1990s, but after a 1994 crime bill blocked incarcerated students from receiving Pell Grants, the number of PEPs shrank to eight by 1997, according to the Vera Institute, a nonprofit that supports criminal justice reform.
Obtaining a higher education degree or certificate can help incarcerated students find stable careers and better pay when they reenter the workplace. People who participate in correctional education are also 43% less likely to return to prison within three years than those who don’t participate, according to a 2018 report by the Rand Corp., a public policy research organization.
Some incarcerated students have been able to access Pell Grants for years as part of an experimental program called Second Chance Pell established by President Barack Obama in 2015. As of 2022, incarcerated students had earned more than 7,000 credentials through the program. For example, Georgetown University launched its Prison Scholars Program in 2018 to bring higher education to incarcerated students in Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
“Financial aid is one piece of this puzzle,” says Rachel Rotunda, director of government relations at the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. “This is a big change for students, but it’s also a big change for institutions and really the whole higher ed prison education community.”
Submit FAFSA to qualify for a Pell Grant
To be considered for a Pell Grant, incarcerated students must fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Because correctional facilities may offer limited or no internet access, students may need to submit a paper copy of their FAFSA application to partner college representatives at their facility. Then the partner college will submit the FAFSA on the student’s behalf to the office of Federal Student Aid, which will evaluate the application and determine the student’s eligibility and grant amount.
“A lot gets facilitated through the college, which means that the prospective student likely already knows what college they’re going to be applying to,” Delaney says. “The other side to that is that it’s rare to see more than one college program at a single prison.”
Though incarcerated students can legally submit the FAFSA as early as July 1, they may need to wait until their facility’s education staff is ready to accept applications and a PEP course is slated to begin.
Incarcerated students shouldn’t worry about filing the FAFSA months ahead of time; they’ll likely need to submit the FAFSA around the time they’re slated to enroll in a PEP, Delaney says. Deadlines will vary by program.
“There tends to be a bit more of a condensed timeline for enrollment [in prisons] compared to the more community-based timeline,” Delaney adds.
Other grants and scholarships to pay for prison education programs
Incarcerated students are blocked from receiving federal student loans, which can provide undergraduates with up to $12,500 in funds each year that must eventually be paid back.
But if a Pell Grant award is not enough to cover the cost of a prison education program, students may turn to other funding sources. This may also be necessary if a student embarks on multiple degrees or takes extra time to finish a program because Pell Grants can be used for no more than six years.
And in many cases, the colleges running PEPs are putting their own resources into making them affordable, Rotunda says, “to ensure that they’re able to offer high-quality programming and to provide students the same level of support that they would be providing for any other student.”

The last few years have been tough ones, with the economy going through recession, millions of people becoming unemployed and businesses going under left and right.
The economy has shown some signs of improving, but indications are we still have a lot of rough road ahead of us.
With the economy being so unsure, now is as good a time as any to start thinking about how to cut back on your regular monthly bills. For many, once you’ve cut out some of the more obvious expenditures, it doesn’t feel like there are that many other places that can be cut. The truth is, however, that most people have a lot of places that they can still cut back and save money.
Today I thought I’d look at some of the main areas of spending that people have every month – their regular monthly bills.
Often people take those monthly bills for granted, not even thinking about how they can save money on those regular expenditures, just taking it on faith that they can’t get those bills any lower.
So today’s post is all about how to save money on just about all of your regular monthly bills.
How To Save On Your Phone And Wireless Bills
There are a variety of ways that you can save on your cell phone, home phone and mobile internet charges. Here are a couple of the options that we’re using – or plan to start using in the coming year to save on our phone bills.
Landline phone service
: For years we’ve had a landline because my wife prefers talking on that versus a cell phone, and also because we needed the landline for our home security system. We recently made changes that mean we can now opt for a cheaper VOIP option for our landline service. After doing some research a lot of other bloggers are talking about the Ooma phone service, which is apparently very good. All you have to do is pay upfront to buy an Ooma Telo device for around $140, which then allows you to make unlimited calls in the U.S. for free over your existing broadband connection! All you have to pay is local taxes in your area (about $4.50 for us). You can port your current landline phone number over as well, for a $39.99 fee. Read my full review of Ooma here, and my post talking about setting Ooma up here.
Prepaid Cell Phones: One way that we’ve been saving a ton of money over the years is by using prepaid cell phone service, instead of more costly contract plans. We have no contract phone service from Republic Wireless, and we pay on average about $40/month for two phones. Both of them are Android smartphones with tons of minutes and unlimited text with 1GB/data ($20/month). The only downside is the up front cost of the cell phone – it isn’t subsidized like on contract plans. There are a variety of other low cost prepaid cell services out there that many people recommend including Tello and a Gen Mobile. Check out the related content below for a full article talking about saving on your cell phone bill using prepaid services. Want to use a traditional phone service? Check out Bill Shark, BillFixers or Rocket Money to negotiate a reduction in your monthly cell phone bills.
Low Cost Hotspots: A while ago I had a need to have Internet access on the go while traveling. At the time I settled on buying a mobile hotspot from Virgin Mobile via their prepaid wireless broadband plan. You just buy the hotspot, and then pay $35/month for 1GB of data. I was in a rush so I bought the hotspot and used it while on my trip. When I got back I became aware that there are quite a few companies that offer mobile hotspots for much lower cost, or phones and phone plans that can be used as hotspots – for much less. Do your research.

How To Save On Your Housing Costs
One place that you can save hundreds of dollars every month is in your housing costs. Most people are aware that they could probably save by refinancing, but there are other ways you can save as well.
Refinance your mortgage: The most obvious way to save on your housing costs is simply to refinance your home mortgage. Rates are so low right now, and by refinancing you can often save hundreds of dollars off of your regular monthly payment. I’m in the middle of looking for a refinance right now, and we stand to save in the neighborhood of $200-300/month.
Appeal your property taxes: A lot of people don’t realize that you can actually appeal your property taxes in many counties by appealing the county’s tax appraisal value. I have successfully appealed our value once a couple of years ago, saving $363/year. Find out how I did it below via the related content.
Get cheaper homeowner’s insurance: I go into this more in the insurance section below, but if you shop around you can often find hundreds in savings every year just by switching insurance companies. We saved almost $1000/year by doing this just a couple of months ago.
Remove mortgage insurance: If you’re paying mortgage insurance with your regular monthly payment, and you have already reached 20% equity in your home, you may want to look into having that insurance removed by your mortgage company. It isn’t there to protect you, but the bank. Often you can have it removed after getting 20% equity in the house, and in many cases it may be required that they remove it. In some cases, if you’re a high risk borrower or if you have a FHA loan, you may need to keep the mortgage insurance longer.
Downsize your house: If you’re really trying to lower your bills a sure fire way is to downsize your house. Not only will your payment go down, but your insurance, taxes, maintenance costs and other costs will go down as well. Of course any costs associated with moving also need to be taken into account.

How To Save On TV, Movies And Entertainment
There are a lot of ways that you can cut costs when it comes to your entertainment dollar.
Shop around and sign up for deals on premium TV: First, if you’re determined to keep your premium TV because of sports or programming only available on cable, you can at least make sure that you get the best possible deal on your cable TV package. Make sure to shop around once your introductory deal runs out and you can usually end up saving hundreds every year by switching companies! Or you can use a bill negotiation service like Bill Shark, BillFixers or Rocket Money to negotiate a reduction in your monthly bills.
Cancel un-needed services: Another thing you can do is check to make sure you’re not doubling up on any services. When we were cutting back a while ago we realized that we were paying for both Netflix streaming and Amazon Prime – which has a good video streaming option. We realized most of the same TV shows and movies were available on both sources, so we canceled Netflix – saving us $7.99/month.
Cut the cord: If you’re a bit more ambitious and aren’t very particular about receiving certain channels or waiting to see content the night it airs, you might want to make this the year that you cut the cord. Cancel your cable or satellite TV packages and move to something more affordable. Instead of paying for a TV package you can use free or low cost video streaming services like Hulu or Philo, shows streamed by the networks, and more. Use a software like Playon to stream the shows directly to your TV using an existing gaming console like the Xbox One or Playstation 4, or a cheap device like the Fire TV or Roku. The options are pretty numerous, and we’ve used options like this in the past to get most of our TV entertainment. Check out the related content below for a couple of exhaustive posts on how to set this up.
Use cheap movie rental alternatives: Don’t really watch TV or movies too much – and a monthly Netflix or Amazon subscription doesn’t make sense for you? Use a cheap rental alternative like Redbox, where you can rent a new release movie for a dollar. You can often find coupon codes to get free rentals every now and then. If you rent infrequently enough for it to matter, use cheap pay per view video options on Itunes, Amazon and Xbox to rent movies without leaving the comfort of your home. Amazon often gives away free credits on social media for their MP3 and Video stores, so follow them on Twitter and Facebook to get deals!

Search for the best deal: Find out where you can get the best deal. For us our internet options include DSL service from a couple of different companies and cable internet. You can usually find competing deals and introductory offers that you can use to hop from company to company and always have the best deal. Other times you can bundle with other services and save. How To Save On Insurance
The best way to save on your insurance costs is just to shop around on a regular basis. I like to do it at least every 1-2 years for my homeowner’s insurance, auto insurance, life insurance and less often for other types. We found our best deal by using an insurance broker because they were able to compare rates at multiple companies and compare quotes for us.
Within the past few weeks we shopped around for new homeowner’s insurance after the premium skyrocketed. We ended up saving almost $1000/year when we switched our homeowner’s and auto insurance to a new company. That’s not the first time we’ve been able to do that! We did the same thing about 4 years ago, comparing rates and saving over $1000 that time!
Not sure where to start in getting quotes? Check out our insurance page to get quotes from a bunch of different companies.

Save By Getting A Better Bank Account
You may have had your old bricks and mortar checking or savings account since you were in high school, but have been noticing lately that they’ve started charging you fees for various things. You’ve also noticed that the fees for your brokerage account have gone up, and mysterious inactivity fees started popping up. Whatever the case, people often find that their bank account is no longer useful to them, and that they can save money on fees (or make more interest) by moving somewhere else.
Save money by closing old accounts: Often old accounts start charging inactivity fees for dormant accounts, or just start charging fees because they think they can get away with it. Closing an account can be a pain, but it can also save you money (and headaches) in the long run.
Sign up for better bank accounts: Signing up for a better bank account will mean not only savings because of no fees and no minimums, but also can mean you’ll end up making more money interest, cash back and other perks. For example, a while back we Chime a great online bank. We’ve saved quite a bit in account fees that we no longer pay. Our old account at a traditional bricks and mortar was charging us fees for all sorts of things, and customer service wasn’t great. We have also switched our savings account to online banks with accounts from Capital One 360 and CIT Bank Not only are we making more in interest, but the features available at those banks surpass our old bank.
Lower interest on your credit card accounts: If the interest on your credit card is getting unreasonably high, consider closing the account after signing up for a card with a lower interest rate, 0% balance transfer and no fees. Just be wary of big charges to actually transfer balances.
Different account types to consider closing if the fees or features aren’t up to snuff? Savings accounts, checking accounts, brokerage accounts, mutual fund company accounts, credit cards. Go down the list and figure out which ones just aren’t cutting it anymore.

How To Save On Energy Bills
Saving on energy bills often can’t be done by switching to another provider because there is often only one option for water, gas or electricity in many areas. That means the savings usually has to come from being creative and saving in other ways.
Some ways to save on your energy bills:
Get a programmable thermostat
: A good portion of your utility bills every month are going to come from your heating and cooling bills. By buying a programmable thermostat like the smart Nest thermostat, you can have your heat turned down at night, turned low when you’re gone and even control it remotely. They advertise an annual savings average of $173, so it may take about 18 months to pay back the $249 cost – unless you can find it for less. Other options include regular programmable thermostats which can run $50-70 or more.
Get (slightly) out of your comfort zone: Be willing to turn the temp down slightly in the winter, and up in the summer. You can save a ton of money just by turning the temp up or down even a few degrees!
Use a power saving device: A lot of the electronic devices we use these days have phantom power drain even when you’re not using them. Get around this by getting an auto-sensing power strip that will turn off all power when the unit is off, or energy saving power plugs that have on off switches for things like coffeemakers or toasters.
Save at your water heater: The water heater can account for 14-25% of your energy bills every year. Often the heat on your water heater is turned up higher than you need it to be. A temp of 120-140 degrees is hot enough, and every 10 degrees you lower it you’ll save 3-5% on your bill. Some experts say not to go below 120 degrees, however, because bacteria can grow in the tank. You can also save by putting a fiberglass insulating blanket on the water heater to save money on heat loss.
Get a home energy audit to find energy leaks: Local utilities will often come out to do a home energy audit free of charge or a small fee to help you find where your home is leaking energy. Plug up the leaks and save!
Maintain your appliances: Doing things like cleaning your AC condensor coils or changing furnace filters regularly can save you money on your energy. If you don’t, appliances can work harder than they need to, and drain more energy.
