On my first day of college, I chose a checking account because the bank was handing out free Frisbees. This was my only bank account for nearly 20 years.
Eventually I opened a savings account at the local credit union. Then I discovered the benefits of a high-yield savings account. Last autumn I opened my first certificate of deposit. And just a few months ago, I started a money market account.
Why so many accounts? To me, each bank account serves a specific purpose. Not every account is suitable for every need. Though not everyone needs (or wants) as many bank accounts as I now have, it’s still a good idea to make sure you’re using the right tool for the job.
Here are my four favorite types of bank accounts for personal use — and what they’re good for:
Rewards checking accounts Many small community banks and credit unions around the United States offer a special “rewards” checking account, a product administered by a company called Kasasa. These accounts carry restrictions and requirements (you have to make 10-12 debit purchases each month, the rate only applies to the first $30,000 or so in your account, etc.), but if you meet them, it’s tough to beat the returns.
I tried to maintain a rewards checking account at a local credit union, but ultimately it didn’t work for me. The credit union was too far away, and I wasn’t meeting the transaction requirements.

A rewards checking account is a great option for your main checking account, provided you have a nearby branch and you have a lot of monthly debit transactions. (ING Direct offers a checking account, but it’s not nearly as good as a rewards checking account.)

Online high-yield savings accounts Like most personal finance bloggers, I’m a fan of online high-yield savings accounts. While traditional banks and credit unions are offering a pittance on their accounts (my credit union’s “high-yield” account is at 0.10%!), you can still find rates above 1.50% through online accounts at CIT Bank, Ally Bank, and others.
I’ve used my online savings account at ING Direct for two primary purposes:
An emergency fund — When I first started my emergency fund, it was important to me that it be a little difficult to access. An online savings account was perfect because I can’t just decide on a whim to spend $10,000. If I want the money, I have to wait a couple of days for it to transfer to my main account. Perfect for an emergency fund.
Online high-yield savings accounts are a great way to save. Interest rates are low right now, but as the economy continues to improve, yields will rise.

Money market accounts As an alternate to an online high-yield savings account, consider a money market account from a brick-and-mortar institution. Until recently, my credit union offered an account with interest rates that were competitive with ING Direct. Now, however, they’ve dropped to under 1.00%.
Money market accounts require higher minimum balances than savings accounts. My credit union requires a $10,000 minimum deposit on a money market account, for example. Their minimum deposit for a savings account is $5. Some money market accounts allow limited check-writing privileges. They often limit the number of withdrawals per month.
A money market account can be a great choice if you’re attempting to consolidate all of your accounts at one bank, or if you’re wary of using an online bank.

Certificates of deposit Certificates of deposit (often simply called CDs) are time deposits. You give your money to the bank and then promise not to touch it for a specific length of time. In general, the longer you agree to let the bank keep your money, the higher the interest rate you’ll receive.
Unlike a savings account, once you put your money into a CD, the interest rate does not fluctuate. If you open a 6-month CD at 3.50% and interest rates drop, you earn 3.50% the entire six months.
If certificates of deposit offer higher returns than a savings account, then why doesn’t everybody use them? The primary drawback to CDs is that they’re less liquid than a savings account; you can’t just move money in and out of them without penalty. You can take your money out of a CD before it “matures”, but you’re docked interest when you do. In fact, many (most?) banks penalize the interest amount, even if it isn’t earned (meaning you could lose part of your principal if you close your CD early).
Despite these limitations, CDs are great place to put money you don’t expect to need for a while. For most folks, a CD ladder is a good way to maximize returns.

Peer Lending
If banks are not the right fit for you, there are other services out there such as peer lending. Peer lending services, such as Lending Club match people looking for a personal loan with people who are willing to fund it. Lending Club isn’t FDIC insured, but offers rates between 7%-9%, which are significantly higher than banks.
Choosing an account Each of these four types of accounts can be put to use to build your wealth. (And, of course, you’ll probably want a brokerage account for your Roth IRA and other investments.) As you look to choose an account, be sure to answer the following questions:
What do you need the account for? Long-term savings? Business? Personal? Every-day use?
How much will you keep in the account? Some accounts have minimum deposits in order to get the best interest rate. For example, my credit union’s money market account requires a $50,000 deposit in order to get the top rate.
How liquid does the money need to be? If you need quick and easy access, you’re best served by local brick-and-mortar banks. If you don’t mind a small delay, online banks will work. And if you can let your money go for months (or years) at a time, a certificate of deposit might be your best choice.
Do you need easy access to the money? Do you need a lot of ATMs? I tend to think that for day-to-day use, it’s best to have an account with a local brick-and-mortar bank. But for substantial savings, I’ve found it useful to create barriers. If I don’t have easy access to the money — if I have to jump through a few hoops to get it — then I’m less likely to spend it frivolously.
How important is online access?
How important is customer service?
How important is privacy? All banks should meet certain minimum privacy levels. But you give up a little of that if you have a regular bank you use. At my local credit union, for example, I tend to get the same teller quite often. She remembers a couple of past transactions because they were unusual. This doesn’t bother me, but I know it would bother some of my friends. If you need maximum privacy, take this into consideration.
Whichever account you choose, be sure that it’s FDIC insured. (Or, if it’s held at a credit union, that it’s insured through the NCUA.)
Conclusion Ten years ago I had a single bank account. Today I have five, including each of the above. (My fifth bank account is a business account.) Each account serves a purpose.

2. High-Yield Savings
High-yield savings accounts offer above-average rates on balances. For example, you might find a savings account with an APY that’s five, 10, or even 20 times higher than the national average.
It’s more common to find high-yield savings accounts at online banks vs. traditional banks. That’s because online banks tend to have lower overhead costs so they’re able to pass on savings to their customers. You’re also less likely to pay a monthly fee for a high-yield savings account.
Of course, you won’t have branch banking access with an online savings account. You may, however, be able to access your account via an ATM card or debit card, or by transferring funds to a linked account.
3. Bonds
A bond is a type of debt instrument. When you buy a bond, you’re agreeing to let the bond issuer use your money for a set time period. In return, the issuer agrees to pay interest back to you.
Bonds can be attractive since you can earn decent interest rates on savings. However, they’re not great for accessibility since you have to wait for the bond to mature to get your money back.
You could cash out a bond early but that might mean forfeiting some of the interest you could earn. So you may want to consider bonds for money that you’d like to invest, versus money that you might need to tap into for emergencies.
4. Certificate of Deposit (CD) Accounts
A certificate of deposit or CD is a time deposit account. When you put money into a CD, the bank agrees to pay interest on your balance over a set time period. Once the CD matures, you can either withdraw your initial deposit and the interest or roll it all over to a new CD.

For example, say you can only save $25 per pay period and you get paid biweekly. That’s $650 you could save in one year if you’re saving regularly. If you’re not satisfied with that amount, you could review your budget to look for more money to save.
Here are a few additional tips for starting an emergency fund:
• Consider opening a separate bank account to hold your emergency savings and linking it to your main checking account. Money in your checking account often gets spent despite the best intentions.
• Look for a savings account that offers a competitive APY with no monthly fees.
• Set up automatic transfers from checking to savings each pay period to make saving effortless.
• Use “found” or extra money, such as tax refunds or year-end work bonuses, to grow your savings versus going shopping with the whole bundle.

Integrates seamlessly with Fidelity brokerage account. Your Fidelity cash management account integrates seamlessly with your Fidelity brokerage account. That is, if you want it to. It functions perfectly fine as a standalone cash-only account too.
Cons
The Fidelity cash management account is stingier than some other cash management accounts and could tempt less sophisticated users with potentially risky investments.
Yield can’t match top cash management or savings accounts. Though variable, the Fidelity cash management account’s yield tends lower than the leading high-yield savings accounts and interest checking accounts. If your top priority is to maximize your return on cash balances, this isn’t the best account for you.
Direct access to stocks and ETFs could threaten users’ emergency savings. Traditional checking and savings accounts aren’t linked to online brokerage accounts, which means they don’t carry the temptation to invest FDIC-insured emergency savings (or any other cash balances) in stocks and ETFs that can lose value.
Some missing checking features. This account has important checking features like online billpay and mobile check deposit, but it’s not quite a full-service checking account.

How Does It Grow When You Stop Contributing to It?
When you stop contributing to your 401(k) plan, don’t expect to see your balance grow at the same rate. But how much your balance will grow will depend on a few factors.
Interest is one of the big factors in the continuing growth of your 401(k) plan’s balance. When you select a fund to invest in, that fund may include CDs, bonds and/or money market funds—all investments that generate interest. And the larger your balance, the larger those interest payments will be. Simply put, 5% of $10,000 is more than 5% of 100,000.
Other investments might generate earnings based on the market, such as stocks and ETFs. You may see greater volatility in these investments, with earnings either being very good or very bad. When you choose what to invest in, you set your risk profile—riskier investments have the promise of a higher payout but also can suffer markedly when the market turns.
One of the most important things to consider when thinking about how much your 401(k) balance will grow once you stop contributing is compounded growth. When you earn money, either from interest or earnings, that amount is put back into your 401(k) and invested. For a very simple example, let’s say you have $1,000 that you invest for one year and it earns $100. Your 401(k) will add that $100 to the pot and invest $1,100 the next year for a return of $110.

The first step is to choose the fund family (Fidelity, Vanguard, etc.). This decision cannot be overlooked since each company manages its funds differently; a 2040 target-date fund from T. Rowe Price will be different from a 2040 target-date fund at Fidelity. Each company has its own philosophy and methodology. Let’s compare the three biggest players in this market: Fidelity Freedom Funds, T Rowe Price Retirement Funds, and Vanguard Target Retirement Funds.

The first criteria you can use to compare the fund families is cost, specifically the expense ratio (the total annual cost for things like advertising and managing the fund). As an example, let’s look at the 2040 funds:

Amazingly, Vanguard’s expenses are roughly a quarter of the other two. This is largely due to the use of actively-managed mutual funds by Fidelity and T Rowe Price; Vanguard only uses low-cost index funds in their target-date funds. If you think 0.59% a year is a pretty small difference, remember that the rough rule-of-thumb for withdrawing money in retirement is only 4% a year. That “small” difference in expense ratios is almost 15% of your potential retirement income!
Another important criteria to consider is the asset allocation used by the target-date fund — how much is invested in stocks, and how much is invested in bonds and other instruments. In particular, you want to look at how that allocation is expected to change as you get older. Investing geeks like me call that the “glide path.”
Choosing Your Target Date
Once you select the fund family, you need to decide on the specific fund to buy. Target-date funds are labeled by retirement year, generally assumed to be when you turn 65. So the 2040 fund is designed for the “typical” person who’s currently 35 and is expected to retire in 2040.
Obviously, no one is forcing you to buy the fund that corresponds to the year you turn 65. There are at least two very good reasons to adjust your target date:
If you plan on retiring much earlier or later than 65, you should consider adjusting your target date. Let’s say you’re 35 and want to retire at 55. Should you buy the target-date fund for 2030, since that’s when you’d retire? Not necessarily. Although the 2030 fund fits your retirement plans, it also assumes people retire around age 65, so your life expectancy is probably much longer than the target audience for the fund. A good compromise might be the 2035 fund, which respects both your early retirement plans and your longer life expectancy relative to others you retire with.
Even if you expect to retire at 65, the amount of risk you want to take is probably not “typical”. An easy way to reduce risk is by selecting a fund with a target date that is five to ten years before when you turn 65. (So, if you plan to retire near 2040, you might choose a 2030 target-date fund.) This lowers the level of risk by holding less in stocks while still considering your investment horizon. And if you want more risk, you can select a target date that is five to ten years past when you turn 65. (If you plan to retire around 2030, you could increase risk by choosing a 2040 target-date fund.)

They’re certainly better than other strategies commonly used by beginning investors: equal-weighting all funds within a 401(k) plan, picking stocks, or just leaving everything in a money market fund.

While you’re looking into coverage areas, withdrawing money should also be a priority. Make sure your bank has an ATM network that will cover you even when you’re away from home. Online or mobile banking can take care of services like online bill pay and mobile check deposit, but mobile services can’t handle banking transactions like cash deposits and withdrawals.

On August 1, 2020, I took out a 7/1 adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) at 2.125%. I could have gotten a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage for 2.75%. However, I wanted to save 0.625% in interest.
Years later, mortgage rates have zoomed higher thanks to the pandemic, massive stimulus spending, a war in Ukraine, and supply chain issues. Inflation reached a 40-year high in June 2022.
Do I regret my decision to get an adjustable-rate mortgage over a fixed-rate mortgage?
My answer is “no,” and let me tell you why.
Why I’m Fine With An ARM Despite Higher Mortgage Rates
Back in 2020, we just had our second baby and wanted a fully remodeled home to house our family. We had been living in a home that was in the middle of a long gut remodel. Given I thought the remodel would take longer than expected, I decided to pounce on a nicer home.
I fully admit I did not anticipate inflation and mortgage rates surging to the levels we saw in 2022. However, despite higher mortgage rates, I still have no regrets getting an ARM.
I know I’m in the minority and will likely get heat for my views. But hear me out.
1) I’m saving money with an ARM
Instead of paying 2.75% for a 30-year fixed mortgage, I’m paying 2.125% for a 7/1 ARM. Every year that goes by, I’m saving almost $10,000 in interest expense.
Over the seven-year fixed duration, I will likely end up saving ~$65,000 in gross mortgage interest expense. Saving money feels great, not bad!
Even if I were to pay a much higher mortgage rate after my ARM expires, I have a $65,000 buffer before I start paying more due to getting an ARM. I calculate that break even period will start in the eleventh year of my ARM, even if mortgage rates stay at current elevated levels.
2) The house has appreciated in value
Buying the house in mid-2020 turned out to be a good move. The value of the house is up between $300,000 – $500,000, even after a 5% – 10% slump since 2022.
The combination of saving money on mortgage interest expense and experiencing home price appreciation feels lucky. The home price appreciation dwarfs any amount of increased mortgage payments I will need to pay after my ARM expires.
If the house depreciated in value, then I would still feel better knowing that I’m paying a lower mortgage interest than I had to. But of course, I wouldn’t feel as good.
3) ARM interest increases have limits
All ARMs should have a limit on how much the mortgage rate can increase the first year after the fixed-rate duration is over. Subsequent years also have interest increase limits. There is also a maximum mortgage interest rate limit increase for the life of the loan.
In my case, my mortgage rate can go up a maximum of 2% in year eight, another 2% in year nine, and up to a maximum interest rate of 7.125%.
Below is an example of an ARM interest limit increase of an $850,000, 5/1 ARM at 2.375%.
As you can see from the example above, the mortgage increases can go up every year up to a limit. Therefore, you can model out potential worst-case scenarios in the future to see if you’ll be able to afford your mortgage.
Thankfully, most people get raises and grow their net worths over time. As a result, they will be better able to handle higher payments in the future.
4) Mortgage principal gets paid down over time
Every month, $3,450 of my mortgage payment goes to paying down principal. In 84 months, when my 7/1 ARM expires, I will have paid off around $330,000 in principal.
If mortgage rates are higher in year eight, then I will pay a higher mortgage interest rate of up to 4.125% for one year. But I will also be paying interest on a ~20% lower mortgage balance.
As a result, my actual monthly payment will only increase by about one percent. Even if my mortgage interest rate increases by another 2% to 6.125% in year nine, my monthly mortgage payment will only increase by about nine percent.
The worst-case scenario of paying one percent to nine percent more in years eight and nine will be hardly noticeable. The average worker who receives two percent raises a year will easily be able to afford these higher payments.
5) Have the option to refinance
Nobody knows the future. However, before my ARM expires on August 1, 2027, I have the option to refinance.
It’s unlikely I can refinance to a similarly low rate of 2.125%. However, there’s a good chance I could refinance to another 7/1 ARM that’s under 4.125%, i.e. less than my first year adjustment’s maximum mortgage rate.
If I can do a no-cost refinance at a low rate, even better. Although you pay a higher mortgage rate in a no-cost refinance, if the mortgage rate is attractive, you’re still winning. Further, you retain the option to refinance again without feeling bad that you paid fees for refinancing.
I believe the long-term trend for inflation and interest rates is down. We’ve already seen inflation peak in June 2022 and come down every month since. I’m confident that sometime between now and August 1, 2027, I’ll have another window to refinance at an attractive mortgage rate.

6) Fixed-rate duration of an ARM more closely matches my ownership duration
If I thought I was really buying a forever home in mid-2020, I would have been more inclined to lock in a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage and pay it down sooner. Instead, I got a 7/1 ARM partially because we will unlikely live in the house for much longer than seven years.
Based on my homeownership track record, we move every two-to-ten years given I’m an avid investor in real estate. My holding period is lower than the median homeownership tenure of roughly twelve years today.
I believe in buying a primary residence, updating it, living in it for at least two years to get the tax-free profits up to $250,000/$500,000 in profits, renting it out, and then buying another home. Over the course of a regular lifetime, a typical household could amass a four rental property portfolio by age 60 and retire comfortably off rental income.
Since 2003, I’ve been buying middle-class homes because that’s what most households can afford. I believe this is a smart way to invest in real estate. Investing in luxury property does not give as high of a return on investment.
Below is the average homeownership tenure from 2005 to 2022 according to Redfin. At about 12 years today, getting a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is a big 18-year overshoot for the average homeowner. I’ve only owned my current home for three years and I’m already itching to upgrade homes. Know thyself!
Although I love our current house, I will likely be disappointed if we are still living in it seven years from now. This means we will have not relocated to Oahu. It will also mean we lived too frugally. In seven years, the house will likely decline to less than ten percent of our net worth.
As someone who has entered into his decumulation phase of life, my goal is to try and spend more money, not less. And one of the easiest ways to spend more money is to own a nicer house.
7) The worst case of paying more isn’t so bad
With principal paydown and the savings I’m accumulating from having a seven-year adjustable-rate mortgage, I will have a large buffer in case mortgage rates skyrocket in year eight and beyond. But let’s say mortgage rates do surge long after my savings buffer is exhausted. Not a big deal.
Chances are high that ten years after I first took out the 7/1 ARM, my net worth will be higher. That’s usually what happens when you continuously save and invest.
In an high inflation, high mortgage rate environment, we also get to earn higher risk-free income through Treasury bonds, CDs, and money market funds. For example, today we can all earn over 5% risk-free in one-year Treasury bonds. We can ride the inflation wave too.
Even if your absolute mortgage amount goes up, if the mortgage payment as a percentage of your income goes down, you will feel fine. There’s a reason why I encourage everyone to follow my 30/30/3 home buying rule.
8) An ARM keeps me motivated to grow more wealth by a particular time
Having an ARM motivates me to pay down debt quicker. When you have a shorter time horizon to get something done, you tend to be more focused.
If I had a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, I wouldn’t work as hard, pay as close attention to my finances, or pay down debt as intentionally. With a 5/1, 7/1, or 10/1 ARM, I treat the introductory fixed-rate period as a deadline to earn as much as possible and/or pay down as much mortgage debt as possible.
One of the key tenets of a Financial Samurai is to achieve financial independence sooner, rather than later. Taking thirty years to pay off a mortgage is not the way. An ARM motivates me to take more action to secure my financial future.

Refinancing or taking on a mortgage in 2020 or 2021 is one of the all-time great financial moves. It’s hard to see mortgage rates getting back to those levels again.
Whether you got a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage or an adjustable-rate mortgage, feel good knowing you got a historically low rate. The double benefit of living cheaply while experiencing property price appreciation is wonderful.
Although paying off your home might not provide joy long-term, when you finally do, you’ll appreciate that you were able to borrow so cheaply.
Despite an increase in mortgage rates, my preference towards adjustable rate mortgages has not changed. Based on my 20+ years of investing in real estate, I don’t want to pay more money on debt than I have to.

Risks of Holding Cash
Keeping significant cash allocations can make sense to meet your short-term retirement income goals for a year or two, writes Amy Arnott, a certified financial analyst (CFA) and portfolio strategist for Morningstar Research Services. Beyond that time horizon, “Cash can be particularly detrimental to long-term investment goals such as retirement.”
Arnott gives this example: “A retiree who started saving $10,000 per year in 1993 and stashed everything in cash would have ended up with about $380,000 by the end of 2022, compared with about $1.5 million if the savings were invested in an all-equity portfolio or $1 million if invested in a balanced fund.”
One reason to be wary of higher-rate cash accounts is that those interest rates tend to move higher during periods of higher inflation. In today’s case, rates have been pushed up by the Federal Reserve’s decision to hike rates 10 times during the past 16 months to tamp down rising inflation. As the Fed raised its benchmark federal funds rate from 0.25% in early 2022 to 5.25% as of May 2023, it’s important to remember that inflation was running at an annual rate of 8.54% when the Fed got started.
Now that inflation has dropped to about 4%, bank savers can make a small bit of profit on high-yielding accounts – but that won’t last for long. In addition, the rates banks pay typically lag the rates set by the Fed, as they’ve done for most of the post-pandemic period, making any real gains after inflation a brief occurrence, at best. With inflation dropping, one-year CD rates are now higher than five-year rates, an indication that bankers expect the Fed to pause or even cut rates as the cost of living falls.
Reasons for Holding Cash
The reason financial planners advise their clients to invest in the stock market is because it’s nearly impossible to beat long-term inflation with cash. Historically, only stocks have demonstrated the capability to generate gains after inflation over any long period. As rates fall, cash is likely to return to its position as one of the least-loved types of assets in its traditional role as a financial “parking lot.” That is, a vehicle where investors stash cash for immediate or short-term needs. However, cash accounts can shine when used for the right purposes, including:
Emergency Funds
Whether it’s the minimum three-months of spending or a year or more, an emergency fund needs to be safe and readily available. Often CDs, savings and and money market accounts are ideal for this purpose.
Short-Term Needs
In the bucket approach to retirement investing, assets are separated into long-term, medium-term and short-term buckets that align with when retirees will need that money. A year or two of living expenses in cash insulates them from market shocks and allows investors to ride out periods of stock volatility. It also mitigates sequence-of-returns risk, a problem that occurs when a period of poor market performance early in retirement creates larger-than-average portfolio losses, making future retirement withdrawals difficult to sustain.
Anticipated Spending
Savings for the down payment on a home, wedding costs or to pay upcoming college tuition bills shouldn’t be stuck in stocks. This is particularly true if that money will be needed in the next few years, when a market decline could leave money invested in stocks coming up short.
Buying Time to Think
An inheritance, lottery winnings, unexpected bonus or other unexpected windfall can be parked in an FDIC-insured bank CD or money market account. This throws off a bit of interest, while the recipient decides just how to invest or spend their bounty.
Bottom Line
Investors who need to hold some amount of their assets in cash should enjoy the temporarily higher-than-usual rates on bank CDs and money market accounts. Just remember that, as an investment, cash is strictly for covering anticipated short-term needs.
