With most of the year under our belt, the holiday season is just around the corner. No matter what you celebrate, this season is full of food, celebrating and spending time with loved ones.
While you’re hard at work prepping for the holiday season, scammers are too. A survey conducted by Experian found that a full 1 in 4. Americans have been a victim of identity theft or fraud in the holiday season. If you’re worried about scammers this year, don’t worry—we’ve got tips on how to look for holiday shopping scams this season.
When the pandemic hit in early 2020, COVID-19 scams became a popular method for criminals to get access to your information and steal your identity. However, the holidays are when these scammers go into overdrive, meaning it’s important to be extra cautious as you do your online shopping and holiday giving. Here are some of the most common holiday shopping scams to be aware of.
Illegitimate Charities
Many people use the holidays as a reason to be a bit more generous, but be careful before you make that donation. Many scammers create fake charities in an attempt to get you to donate. They get your money—and possibly access to your identity info—and no good ever comes from that generosity.
Check for social media presence, news stories, financial records and proof that any charity you’re considering donating to actually exists and has a good reputation.
I just watched a documentary on the dark web, and I will never feel safe using my credit card again!
Luckily I don’t have to worry about that. I have ExtraCredit, so I get $1,000,000 ID protection and dark web scans.
I need that peace of mind in my life. What else do you get with ExtraCredit?
It’s basically everything my credit needs. I get 28 FICO® scores, rent and utility reporting, cash rewards and even a discount to one of the leaders in credit repair.
It’s settled; I’m getting ExtraCredit tonight. Totally unrelated, but any suggestions for my new fear of sharks? I watched that documentary too.
…we live in Oklahoma.
Fake Online Stores
Online shopping is a convenient way to check off all the items on your list without having to actually brave the holiday crowds. However, it’s important to ensure that the sites you’re shopping from are actually legitimate. Scammers create fake online storefronts—sometimes even mimicking well-known retailers—and you don’t know it’s fake until the merchandise never comes or you start seeing evidence of identity fraud.
Empty Gift Cards
Gift cards are the perfect choice if you’re not sure what someone on your gift-giving list wants or if they like to pick out items themselves. But selling gift cards that have a $0 balance or have already expired is a common and remarkably easy scam. This happens most often on local sales sites, such as Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.
Email Scams
Have you ever gotten an email about something you bought online—but you never actually purchased anything from that retailer? Maybe the email said you needed to reset your password or gave you a link to track your package. These are phishing email scams designed to get you to enter your personal info so scammers can use it for identity theft.
Shipping Problems
One of the biggest worries that comes with online shopping—especially with the supply chain issues that have come as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic—is whether the gifts will arrive on time. Criminals capitalize on this fear by sending out emails, texts and other communications letting you know there’s been an issue with your package. You’re asked to provide personal information such as your address, credit card info and birth date to confirm your order, but all you’re really doing is giving scammers the information they need to steal your identity.
While the holidays are a common time for shopping scams, it doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about it. Learn what to look for and how to protect yourself from identity theft with these tips.
1. Pay Attention to Website URLs
Online searches can lead you to scammer-run websites that unleash computer malware or collect credit card numbers for identity theft. Carefully read website domain names. Watch for unfamiliar vendors or missing letters, misspellings or other tweaks to the name of a legitimate company. Pay special attention to the last letters. For example, tiffanyco.mn indicates a Mongolia-based website, not the legitimate website for Tiffany & Co., tiffany.com.
2. Make Sure the Site Is Legitimate
Before ordering, check the “Contact Us” page for a phone number and physical address and the “Terms and Conditions” link detailing return policies and such. Unlike legitimate vendors, bogus websites are less likely to post these—or they’ll provide them in a suspicious manner, such as via a faxed request only.
How do you know if a holiday website is legit? Check the Better Business Bureau as well as Facebook and Google reviews before you buy from a new place. If the business doesn’t have any social media or online presence other than the website, that’s a red flag.
3. Only Buy Gift Cards From Retailers
Buy gift cards directly from the retailer and avoid shopping for discount gift cards through local swap sites. You may also want to buy gift cards online or from the checkout instead of the display racks, which are less secure. Fraudsters can peel off stickers to glean gift card codes, replace them in envelopes and wait for an unsuspecting shopper to buy them. Once purchased and activated, they enter stolen codes at the retailer’s website to make online purchases—leaving the intended recipient with a useless card.
4. Look for HTTPS Sites
When buying online, check the URL to see whether the website starts with “http://” or “https://.” The “S” is for “secure” and is your best bet for safe shopping. Some legitimate retailers may use http sites, but your information is much more vulnerable to attack in this case because it’s easier for hackers to get to it. Even with a secure page, avoid using public Wi-Fi hotspots for online shopping or other financial transactions.
5. Use Prepaid Gift Cards for Online Shopping
Consider buying prepaid cards for online shopping instead of using your actual debit or credit card. These cards are often reloadable for ease of use, and if your information does happen to be stolen, hackers will only have access to the amount on the card and not your entire bank account.
6. Take Care on Craigslist
On Craigslist or when answering local classified ads, deal only with sellers who provide a phone number you can verify. Don’t rely solely on email correspondence. Assume any request for wire-transfer payment is a scam, and be suspicious of prepaid debit card transactions. Using PayPal or a credit card is your safest bets.
7. Avoid Deals That Seem Too Good to Be True
Stay clear of prices from private sellers that seem too good to be true or are tied to hard-luck stories, such as a need to sell quickly because of divorce or military deployment. No one is selling the latest gaming console for only $50, no matter how hard up they are. These are common scams to get advance payment—and you’ll likely get no merchandise.
8. Don’t Open Holiday E-Cards From People You Don’t Know
Delete E-Cards or general holiday emails if you don’t know the sender. These mass-sent greetings likely contain malware. Legitimate card notifications should include a confirmation code to safely open the card at the issuing website.
9. Beware of Undeliverable Package Emails
Avoid emails claiming that FedEx, UPS, DHL or the U.S. Postal Service has an undeliverable package with links for details. The links will install malware that can log keystrokes to steal computer files and passwords. Unless you previously provided an email address, courier services won’t contact you this way. This scam baits you to call for details—at which point you’ll be tricked into making an expensive overseas call or revealing your personal and financial information. Look up the callback number yourself if you’re curious.
Gearing up for the holidays? Go ahead and enjoy your holiday shopping this year. Just be a little careful—keep an eye out for anything suspicious and make sure that any website you buy from is legitimate.
If you’re worried that you might already be a victim of identity theft or just want to keep a closer eye on your credit, ExtraCredit can help you know what’s going on with your credit report and spot identity theft as soon as it happens.

Before delivery
What’s the story behind the brand?
Article, a Canadian DTC furniture company that’s been around since 2013, combines a straightforward online shopping experience with well-designed, modern pieces at reasonable prices. Along with very handsome sectionals and sleeper sofas, the brand’s stylishly designed furniture and home decor options include lounge chairs, full dining sets, bedroom furnishings, and more. And unlike traditional retailers, the Canadian brand’s offerings are only available to shop online, meaning no showrooms or storefronts to assess options in-person.
Price: How much does it cost? Are there payment plans available?
At $1499, the sofa bed is in league with comparable IKEA sleeper sofas, but the online images made it look slightly more upscale—and, crucially, sturdier, like it wouldn’t wreck a house guest’s back.
What are the upholstery or customization options? Did you choose any?
The Article Nordby sofa comes in three colorways, a denim blue and two shades of gray. (I opted for the lighter Pep Gray.)
What is the lead time for customization, manufacturing, and delivery?
Each version was available for delivery to my zip code within two weeks, and payment plans are available through Affirm.
Delivery + assembly
What was the delivery process like?
Article offers free front door delivery for orders over $999, but the company has white-glove service options as well. For $119, they will place your furniture in the room of your choice, and for $199, they’ll also handle assembly. I opted for in-room delivery since the pull-out sofa was going to the top floor of our narrow Brooklyn brownstone, and Article made the process incredibly easy. This was key since, at 205 pounds, the Nordby is quite heavy—both pieces of the sofa bed have a steel frame and solid wood legs.
What was the assembly process like? How long did it take and how many people?
Assembly was similarly breezy, with the instructions fitting on one side of an index card. It took zero tools and two people to screw on the legs and maneuver the sleeper into place.
Is the sleeper sofa suitable for particular decor styles? If so, which?
Design-wise the Nordby is fairly innocuous. It doesn’t make a statement, it doesn’t elicit curious comments from visitors, it doesn’t pull focus from the rest of the room. It would be well suited to a minimalist, modern, Scandi-style household.
Is it durable / practical in a modern home?
The performance fabric seems quite durable—less luxury home decor and more office furniture—and there are no sharp angles or pokey pieces. I was able to convert it from sofa to bed by myself.
After delivery
What are the dimensions (both regular and pullout)? How does it fit in your space when it’s not expanded versus when it is? Would it be better suited for a different type of home?
Closed, the sofa measures 33 inches tall by 87 inches wide by 35 inches deep, which feels a little ungenerous proportionally—particularly the seat depth (29.5 inches), since the back cushions are plump. When open, the mattress measures 54 inches by 72 inches. We actually prefer to keep it open—more on that below—so if you’re planning on doing the same, it might not be appropriate for a small room.
Have you ever been online shopping and, right before you confirm your purchase, you see an offer to not pay everything today? These offers are a fairly new type of loan becoming increasingly popular across online retailers known as Buy Now, Pay Later.
Buy Now, Pay Later programs offer an appealing way to shop online without paying in full at the time of purchase. It can be a lot easier to shop when it doesn’t feel like you’re paying as much–but that’s exactly why it’s important to know a bit more of what goes on behind the scenes of these offers.
Before you check out, there are a few things you should know. Who is really making the purchase? What payments are you committing to? You might be surprised to learn you’re not really paying for that item–at least not yet!
What Is Buy Now, Pay Later?
Buy Now, Pay Later programs allow you to purchase items now and pay for them later, usually within a set period of time with no interest or late fees. If you’ve done some online shopping lately, you may have heard of Klarna and Afterpay, two popular Buy Now, Pay Later services.
Similar to a loan, these services are paying for your purchase up front alongside your initial payment to the service. Then, over the course of a predetermined period, you’ll make additional payments until the initial cost is paid to the service. It’s important to remember that by entering into a loan agreement through these services, you’re still responsible for making payments on the agreed-upon date. Failure to do so could result in late fees and other penalties.
Get matched with a personal
loan that’s right for you today.

As of now, Buy Now, Pay Later companies aren’t reporting on-time payments to credit bureaus, but missed payments can negatively impact your credit score. It’s important to remember that, although easy to use, Buy Now, Pay Later loans can impact other areas of your financial health. These services are still fairly new, so be sure to do your research on how the loan could impact your financial future.
How do Buy Now, Pay Later programs work?
When using a Buy Now, Pay Later program, you’ll need to provide your payment details such as bank account or credit card information. This is so the lender can set up automatic payments to be deducted from your account on the agreed-upon date.
With these services, it’s not you paying the retailer. Though you receive your purchase immediately, the Buy Now, Pay Later service fronts the bill. Then, you owe that service the remaining cost of the order beyond the initial payment.
It’s important to note that when signing up for these services, you’re entering into an agreement that must be adhered to or there could be consequences. Be sure to check all terms and conditions before signing up for any loan agreement.
Why are retailers using Buy Now, Pay Later?
Buy Now, Pay Later services are a solution to a major problem online retailers have: cart abandonment. Have you ever received an email saying “Don’t forget what you left in your cart!” These programs make it easier for customers to click “place order” before any second thoughts because it can feel like we’re not paying as much as the order costs. This is why retailers are interested in these services despite you not paying them directly.
How can I use Buy Now, Pay Later safely?
1. Make sure you can afford the item in full before agreeing to a loan agreement.
2. Always read all terms and conditions before committing to any loan contract.
3. Keep track of your payments and make sure you know what is owed and when it’s due.
4. Ensure you have an available balance to cover charges as they may be automatically withdrawn.
Like many financial choices and decisions, it’s important to educate yourself on if it’s right for you. Remember, using these services aren’t necessarily a bad choice. However, the best choice is making sure you’re set up to fulfill all promises and expectations upon entering the loan. Even just forgetting how many payments you have left or how much you still owe can make these payment plans risky.

Living in a residence hall or apartment can make it hard to decorate. There’s minimal space, and you probably bought everything from Target — which makes it easy to coordinate colors but difficult to create a space that doesn’t look like “dorm central” threw up all over it.
Here are some of the best and worst design choices we make in college. If you find yourself guilty of some of these, it’s OK. We all make mistakes sometimes.
First, we have maybe the worst offender of all: navy blue sheets. Navy blue sheets aren’t so bad on their own, but it’s really the Megan Fox poster covering up the hole a gym bro punched in the wall that makes it a crime against interior design. Here’s an easy fix: Find a different color of sheets. Better yet, go ahead and buy a second set of sheets altogether. Navy blue and white stripes are a good middle ground — still simple, but just a step above.
Speaking of simple yet a step above, a nice area rug elevates your space faster than your grades dropped as a freshman. Make sure you choose the right size rug for your room so that it doesn’t disappear under the lofted bed you’ve fallen out of a few times, but also doesn’t take up the entire floor.
Next, we have two that go together like ramen and your $2 plastic bowl: LED strip lights and fake vines. If you have these, I want to quickly remind you to check your email to see if your SHEIN order has shipped yet. If not, that’s OK. It just gives you more time to film another thirst trap for your TikTok while you wait.
Chances are, if you have fake vines hanging behind your bed collecting dust and critters, you might have a tapestry on your wall as well. I’m not judging — I think tapestries make a great backdrop for reading your horoscope and going online shopping for another evil eye necklace. But here is what is written in the stars for you, Leo: It’s time for better wall art.
Not to worry. You can up your wall art game at very little cost. Start by framing the posters that are already on your wall to add a put-together touch to the room. Stock up on Command strips and make sure you secure those posters to the wall really well, unless you want to find yourself being smacked in the face by a flying picture of Harry Styles at 2 a.m.
At the end of the day, decorating your space is all about making your dorm room or apartment your home away from home. Buy what you want, hang what you want, but whatever you do, remember to sweep your floors every once in a while.
It’s now possible to activate all 5% category credit cards for the fourth quarter of 2023, including the Chase Freedom, Chase Freedom Flex, Discover IT, Citi Dividend, US Bank Cash+ and some smaller cards. In this post we’ll provide the activation link for each card and links to track your spend, along with strategies to help increase spend in these categories.
Dates: October 1st – December 31, 2023. Store purchases can usually be done until the last minute while online purchases should be given a buffer zone of a day or two.
Activation Link / FAQ / Sample Stores & Exclusions / Our original post
With the Freedom and Freedom Flex cards, activate to earn 5% back this quarter on up to $1,500 in spend at PayPal, Wholesale Clubs, and at Select Charities.
Paypal – Should work for any purchase with Paypal payment. This is always a easy and useful category given that many/most online retailers accept Paypal, e.g. Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc.
I sometimes pay my taxes with a credit card via Paypal to trigger this category, read more about paying taxes with a credit card in this post.
Some people might find it worthwhile to swallow the 2.9% Paypal fee and max out this category by paying family or friends with their Freedom card. Just note the fine print technically excludes this: “Person-to-Person (P2P) transactions made with your Chase Freedom card on PayPal may be prohibited or not eligible for 5%.”
You can also do your year-end charitable giving with Paypal payments on many charities, or to almost any charity with Paypal Giving Fund.
Readers note that if you use the Freedom Flex via Paypal at Dining or Drugstores you’ll end up getting 7x due to the extra 2x bonus the card has on those categories.
Wholesale Clubs – Should work for Costco, Sam’s Club, BJs, and similar.
Bear in mind, Costco in-club only accepts Visa cards; online you can use Mastercard as well, and you can even order Costco Cash cards for use in-club. Also note, gas at Costco will not work to earn the 5x; the workaround is to buy Costco Cash cards in-club and use those to purchase gas.
You can buy Sam’s Club gift cards at the club or online which can then be used at Walmart or Walmart.com or Walmart gas. (Or you can buy Walmart e-gift cards from Paypal Digital Gifts which also earns 5x as part of the Paypal category.)
Some wholesale clubs sell third-party gift cards or even Visa gift cards.
Exclusions: “Gas, fuel, wholesale specialty service purchases such as travel, insurance, cell phone and home improvement will not qualify in this category. Mastercard not accepted at Costco warehouses or at gas stations.”
Select Charities – includes: American Red Cross, Equal Justice Initiatives, Feeding America, Habitat for Humanity, International Medical Corps, International Rescue Committee, Leadership Conference Education Fund, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, National Urban League, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, United Negro College Fund, UNICEF USA, United Way, World Central Kitchen GLSEN, Out and Equal, Sage.

Bank of America® issues two co-branded cards with the National Education Association, a union for educators: the NEA RateSmart card and the NEA Customized Cash Rewards card. Only NEA members are eligible to apply for both cards.
A sign-up bonus on both cards makes them solid choices for NEA members, and especially those who want a break from interest on purchases, balance transfers or both. Both NEA cards have some of the longest intro APR periods among credit cards today.
Here are five things to know about the NEA credit cards from Bank of America®.
1. There are two NEA credit cards
The NEA Customized Cash earns:
3% cash back in the category of your choice: gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drugstores, or home improvement and furnishings. The category may be changed every month.
2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs.
Unlimited 1% unlimited cash back on everything else.
Cash back earned from the 3% and 2% categories is capped at $2,500 in combined spending per quarter. Purchases that exceed the cap earn 1%.
Earned rewards do not expire and may be redeemed for a statement credit, check, direct deposit into a Bank of America® checking or savings account, or credit to a qualifying Merrill Cash Management account or Merrill 529 account.
2. An NEA membership is required
Applicants must be a member of the National Education Association to apply for either of the NEA credit cards. The following professionals qualify to join:
Faculty members.
Counselors.
Librarians.
Administrators.
Support staff.
Aspiring educators enrolled in a postsecondary program in preparation for employment in one of the above categories.
Retired professionals.
Total membership costs include national, local and state dues and therefore depend on where each member lives; for the 2023-’24 school year, national NEA dues were $208.
🤓Nerdy Tip
All Bank of America® cards, including the NEA Customized Cash and RateSmart cards, participate in the Museums on Us program that gives Bank of America® cardholders free admission to hundreds of museums on the first full weekend of every month. Only the cardholder receives free admission, though.
3. Both cards feature good intro APRs
The intro APRs from the NEA Customized Cash and RateSmart credit cards are among the most competitive in today’s market. Customized Cash cardholders get 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 18 months. With the RateSmart card, the 0% period for purchases and balance transfers is 21 months.
Two caveats regarding balance transfers apply to both NEA cards. One, the balance transfer must be made within 60 days of account opening to qualify for the 0% intro APR. Also, you can’t transfer a Bank of America®-issued debt to either NEA credit card. Loan balances from other lenders including credit cards, personal loans, student loans, auto loans or home equity loans are allowed.
4. Fees are identical on both cards
Both NEA credit cards have a $0 annual fee and a 3% balance transfer fee. Neither card charges a penalty APR either, meaning Bank of America® won’t automatically raise your interest rate if you pay late.
5. Both cards have sign-up bonuses
As of this writing, the sign-up bonus on the NEA Customized Cash card was a $200 Amazon gift card after spending at least $500 within the first 90 days of account opening. For the RateSmart card, as of this publicaiton, the welcome offer was a $100 Target gift card after spending at least $500 within the first 90 days of account opening.
Many cards with long 0% APR periods don’t offer sign-up bonuses, so the welcome offers on both NEA cards are a nice perk. However, the fact that the bonuses are issued in gift cards rather than cash may be slightly limiting.
FOMO spending stands for “fear of missing out,” meaning you are dropping dollars to keep up with what others are doing. That might mean anything from trying the skincare product a favorite celeb swears by to dining at the super-pricey new omakase place all your friends are raving about or even signing your toddler up for an enrichment class because your neighbor says it’s a fab headstart.
The fear of missing out can change how many people relate to their cash. It can trigger impulsive and compulsive spending and lead to “splashing out” on things they never had any intention of purchasing. In other words, it can motivate them to live (too) large and wind up with pricey credit card debt and little progress towards their savings goals.
If you’re wondering how to stop FOMO spending, know this: It doesn’t mean subsisting on ramen and never traveling. It does mean being mindful and meaningful so you don’t get caught up in trying to match what your free-spending friends may do. Here, you’ll learn more about FOMO spending and how not to overdo it.
Wait, Back Up—What Is FOMO?
FOMO, or Fear Of Missing Out, is a feeling of anxiety someone might experience about not being part of an event that is happening, usually triggered these days by seeing social media posts from friends enjoying an activity (from a Taylor Swift concert to a holiday in Croatia) and wishing you were part of the fun. While it’s certainly true that businesses employ FOMO tactics to get you to buy things, it’s not just a sales strategy.
Nick Hobson Ph.D., says “While the fear of missing out has always been there, the explosion of social media has launched our young people headfirst into the FOMO experience.”
For many people, social media can be their main community lifeline, and having the impression that you are not part of the “in” group is enough to trigger a stress response like FOMO.
FOMO Spending Definition
So how is FOMO spending defined? It’s when a fear of missing out propels you to spend money (perhaps too much money) to feel as if you are part of the crowd and keeping up with your peers.
Examples could be feeling as if two far-flung vacations a year are must-haves because that’s what your coworkers do. Or perhaps it means plunking down four figures on a designer bag because all your friends have one. At a smaller scale, it could mean joining the other moms every morning after drop-off for a fancy latte. It’s all part of feeling as if you’re on the same level as your peers…and it all can add up.
💡 Quick Tip: Want to save more, spend smarter? Let your bank manage the basics. It’s surprisingly easy, and secure, when you open an online bank account.
FOMO Spending to Keep Up with Peers
How widespread is FOMO spending? One recent study found that almost 40% of more than 1,000 Americans ages 18 to 34 said they have gone into debt just to keep up with their friends’ lifestyles. This is FOMO taken the financial extreme.
People may try to overcome FOMO by spending more than they have on things like travel, clothes, food, and going out. Whether it’s bigger “once-in-a-lifetime” experiences you can’t miss out on like trips, music festivals, or weddings, or even smaller events like dinner and drinks, FOMO spending can impact your finances and ability to build wealth over time.
• FOMO spending often stems from peer pressure to buy something you can’t afford so that you can still participate in a group.
• It could stem from feelings of insecurity; you want to show others that you fit in and do so by spending more than you might otherwise.
Unfortunately, this can add up to extra spending, money stress, and debt.

How Many People FOMO Spend?
As noted above, one recent study found that 40% of people admit to FOMO spending. And those are the ones willing to admit to it. The figure could be considerably higher.
One study found almost twice that percentage of people admitted to going into debt to keep up with their friends’ spending. That’s a startling figure and shows just how common FOMO spending can be.
💡 Quick Tip: Your money deserves a higher rate. You earned it! Consider opening a high-yield checking account online and earn 0.50% APY.
4 Tips to Avoid FOMO Spending
Reining in FOMO spending can be hard, especially if your friends are truly living at a different income level than you. But odds are, some of your friend group might be in the same situation and are overspending in an effort to impress. You can avoid FOMO shopping or at least cut back on spending by trying these tips:
1. Suggest Free Alternatives
The first way to conquer FOMO spending is to simply stop spending! While it’s of course easier said than done, why not come up with a free alternative when a friend suggests plans?
Meeting for up for a $10 bubble tea at a cafe could just as easily turn into sitting on your couch with a homemade cup of joe. Friends want to go out to the movies or the mall? Suggest visiting a museum on a day they offer free admission instead.
2. Limit Your Card Usage and Carry Cash
Limiting your spending on credit or even debit cards and making the majority of your purchases with cash will drastically impact how often you impulse-spend on something when the feeling of FOMO creeps in.
If you only withdraw a certain amount before heading out to dinner or the bar, you’ll already have a pre-set budget that you know you feel comfortable spending. So maybe you only have one pricey cocktail or skip coffee and dessert: You can still have a great experience going out.
3. Create a Budget and Stick to It
Along the same lines, creating a monthly or even weekly budget may also help you cut down on FOMO spending. Your budget can and should include money for savings or big-ticket items like travel you know you have coming up. Having a budget can give you guardrails and help you focus on the big-picture rather than getting caught up in the FOMO moment.
By putting some money towards future goals and then calculating how much “fun” money you have left over after bills, you’ll know exactly when you’ve reached your limit. While making a budget might not help you eliminate FOMO spending altogether, you’ll at least give yourself more constraints if you limit yourself to a specific spending amount.
4. Lower Your Social Media Exposure
Ready for another way to stop spending so much? The endless scrolling on platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram offer some instant gratification, but social media is one of the main contributing factors of FOMO.
Targeted ads, influencers touting products, and even your own friends’ posts can all conspire to budget you toward spending too much. Seeing all the wonderful shiny things and exciting experiences out there can lead you to splurge (and often).
Many people find their guard is especially down at night, and that’s when they are likely to snap up skincare products, a new watch, or a hotel room overlooking the beach. If you can relate, trade in your laptop or phone time before bed for a good old-fashioned book or movie. You won’t wake up the next morning with that guilt about spending money.
If You Must Spend, Still Plan Ahead
You won’t be able to avoid FOMO spending all of the time, so it’s also important to have a strategy in place for making the best use of your time and money if the feeling kicks in.
Some people consider their fixed vs. variable expenses and build in a little extra spending money as part of their discretionary spending. If you know you have, say, a cash cushion of $100 or $200 a month, this can help with those moments when you decide you want to “keep up with the Joneses.” You can decide if this is the moment to splurge or not.
Delayed Gratification
If you have a sudden urge to buy something because of FOMO, try instead to write the item down, whether in a Notes app on your phone or even just a physical piece of paper, and come back to it 24 hours later.
This will help you avoid impulse purchases just because something is on sale, for instance, or your friend just bought it. You can evaluate in a day if it’s something you still really need. Some people even stretch that 24 hours out to a full month with what’s known as the 30-day spending rule.
Buying in Person
Nothing crushes the FOMO spending feeling more than forcing yourself to trek to an actual physical store to make a purchase.
Too many times, FOMO spending happens when you are online shopping and the ease of delivery right to your door doesn’t make you think twice about your purchase.
Making that easy impulse purchase into a chore can be a buzzkill that helps you save big-time.

FAQ
How do you deal with FOMO buying?
Recognizing FOMO buying is the first step to minimizing it. You might avoid social media apps that trigger this kind of spending; find free alternatives to pricey outings your friends suggest; or tweak your budget to allow for small splurges and stick within those spending limits.
How can you stop being affected by FOMO?
Avoiding FOMO is a very personal thing. Some people avoid or even delete social media apps that trigger overspending; others have honest talks with their friend group about their financial limits; still others decide to sidestep certain outings with friends that they know will bust their budget and join them for low-cost get-togethers instead.
What is FOMO spending?
FOMO spending is when you buy an item or experience because you don’t want to miss out on something “everyone else is doing.” Some people may think of it as responding to peer pressure. You purchase, say, a status watch or take a pricey vacation not because you can comfortably afford it but because you want to “keep up with the Joneses.”

SoFi members with direct deposit activity can earn 4.50% annual percentage yield (APY) on savings balances (including Vaults) and 0.50% APY on checking balances. Direct Deposit means a deposit to an account holder’s SoFi Checking or Savings account, including payroll, pension, or government payments (e.g., Social Security), made by the account holder’s employer, payroll or benefits provider or government agency (“Direct Deposit”) via the Automated Clearing House (“ACH”) Network during a 30-day Evaluation Period (as defined below). Deposits that are not from an employer or government agency, including but not limited to check deposits, peer-to-peer transfers (e.g., transfers from PayPal, Venmo, etc.), merchant transactions (e.g., transactions from PayPal, Stripe, Square, etc.), and bank ACH funds transfers and wire transfers from external accounts, do not constitute Direct Deposit activity. There is no minimum Direct Deposit amount required to qualify for the stated interest rate.
SoFi members with Qualifying Deposits can earn 4.50% APY on savings balances (including Vaults) and 0.50% APY on checking balances. Qualifying Deposits means one or more deposits that, in the aggregate, are equal to or greater than $5,000 to an account holder’s SoFi Checking and Savings account (“Qualifying Deposits”) during a 30-day Evaluation Period (as defined below). Qualifying Deposits only include those deposits from the following eligible sources: (i) ACH transfers, (ii) inbound wire transfers, (iii) peer-to-peer transfers (i.e., external transfers from PayPal, Venmo, etc. and internal peer-to-peer transfers from a SoFi account belonging to another account holder), (iv) check deposits, (v) instant funding to your SoFi Bank Debit Card, (vi) push payments to your SoFi Bank Debit Card, and (vii) cash deposits. Qualifying Deposits do not include: (i) transfers between an account holder’s Checking account, Savings account, and/or Vaults; (ii) interest payments; (iii) bonuses issued by SoFi Bank or its affiliates; or (iv) credits, reversals, and refunds from SoFi Bank, N.A. (“SoFi Bank”) or from a merchant.
SoFi Bank shall, in its sole discretion, assess each account holder’s Direct Deposit activity and Qualifying Deposits throughout each 30-Day Evaluation Period to determine the applicability of rates and may request additional documentation for verification of eligibility. The 30-Day Evaluation Period refers to the “Start Date” and “End Date” set forth on the APY Details page of your account, which comprises a period of 30 calendar days (the “30-Day Evaluation Period”). You can access the APY Details page at any time by logging into your SoFi account on the SoFi mobile app or SoFi website and selecting either (i) Banking > Savings > Current APY or (ii) Banking > Checking > Current APY. Upon receiving a Direct Deposit or $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits to your account, you will begin earning 4.50% APY on savings balances (including Vaults) and 0.50% on checking balances on or before the following calendar day. You will continue to earn these APYs for (i) the remainder of the current 30-Day Evaluation Period and through the end of the subsequent 30-Day Evaluation Period and (ii) any following 30-day Evaluation Periods during which SoFi Bank determines you to have Direct Deposit activity or $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits without interruption.
SoFi Bank reserves the right to grant a grace period to account holders following a change in Direct Deposit activity or Qualifying Deposits activity before adjusting rates. If SoFi Bank grants you a grace period, the dates for such grace period will be reflected on the APY Details page of your account. If SoFi Bank determines that you did not have Direct Deposit activity or $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits during the current 30-day Evaluation Period and, if applicable, the grace period, then you will begin earning the rates earned by account holders without either Direct Deposit or Qualifying Deposits until you have Direct Deposit activity or $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits in a subsequent 30-Day Evaluation Period. For the avoidance of doubt, an account holder with both Direct Deposit activity and Qualifying Deposits will earn the rates earned by account holders with Direct Deposit.
Members without either Direct Deposit activity or Qualifying Deposits, as determined by SoFi Bank, during a 30-Day Evaluation Period and, if applicable, the grace period, will earn 1.20% APY on savings balances (including Vaults) and 0.50% APY on checking balances.
Interest rates are variable and subject to change at any time. These rates are current as of 8/9/2023. There is no minimum balance requirement. Additional information can be found at http://www.sofi.com/legal/banking-rate-sheet..

Food stamps, or SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, help millions of Americans who earn lower incomes or face economic hardship feed their families. In one recent year, 12% of all Americans accessed this benefit.
In the not too distant past, however, SNAP benefits weren’t always the most convenient way to go food shopping. A person had to go to the store and pay for their groceries with the program’s EBT card. Today, however, as so much of life is going digital, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers an online purchasing program to make food stamps more convenient for residents of every state. It’s becoming easier to use SNAP benefits online.
Here, you’ll learn more about how, where, and when you can use these benefits to grocery-shop online.
What Are Food Stamps?
“Food stamps” is an older, but still commonly used term to describe SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
SNAP is designed to provide nutritional assistance to low-income families, as well as the elderly, disabled, and people who have filed for unemployment. SNAP is a federal program administered by the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, which has a network of local offices.
While SNAP doesn’t cover all the items you might pick up at the supermarket, it can significantly cut your grocery bill.
• You can use food stamps to purchase meat, poultry, and fish; vegetables and fruit; bread and cereal; dairy products; snack food; and seeds and plants that produce food.
• However, you can’t use them to purchase tobacco, wine, beer, liquor, vitamins, prepared food, and nonfood items like cosmetics, hygiene items, and cleaning supplies.
Everyone on food stamps has a bank card called an EBT card, backed by the government. The program allows for customers to pay in-store and increasingly online, using their EBT just like a debit or credit card.
The maximum monthly food-stamp assistance you can get varies by where you live and how many people are in your household. A family of four living in the U.S. can now receive around $939 a month.
💡 Quick Tip: Want to save more, spend smarter? Let your bank manage the basics. It’s surprisingly easy, and secure, when you open an online bank account.
Who Qualifies for Food Stamps?
A household is eligible for Food Stamps, or SNAP, when it meets specific criteria. Each state has an income limit that SNAP households must stay under. Additionally, they may factor in your finances and savings to determine your eligibility.
To apply for food stamp benefits or to get information about the SNAP program in your area, you can contact your local SNAP office. You can find local offices and each State’s application on the USDA national map .
Each state has its own application form. If your state’s form is not on the web yet, you can contact your local SNAP office to request a paper form.

Can You Use Food Stamps Online?
Yes, food stamps can be used online. Thanks to the expedited expansion of an online purchasing pilot program run by the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, households receiving SNAP benefits in any of the 50 participating states (along with the District of Columbia) can now use EBT to pay for groceries online from select retailers.
If a retailer is enrolled in SNAP’s online program, people on food stamps can select foods eligible for EBT benefits online and then arrange for in-store or curbside pickup. In some cases, it may be possible to have your groceries delivered. If the retailer charges a delivery fee, however, you cannot use your benefits to cover that fee.
💡 Quick Tip: Most savings accounts only earn a fraction of a percentage in interest. Not at SoFi. Our high-yield savings account can help you make meaningful progress towards your financial goals.
What Stores Accept Food Stamps Online?
You now know the answer to “Can food stamps be used online?” The next question is probably, “Where exactly can I use food stamps online?”
Fortunately, many stores now accept food stamps online. While Amazon and Walmart are among the best known retailers for online EBT shopping, the number of stores accepting EBT card payment online is continuing to expand.
• FreshDirect, an online grocery delivery service, now delivers for free to SNAP participants in some zip codes in the New York metropolitan area.
• Instacart, a grocery delivery service, is currently partnering with many local stores in the U.S. to offer SNAP EBT benefits. The latest version of the Instacart app should display whether your local store offers EBT SNAP.
Which retailers (and which specific locations) participate in the online SNAP program will vary from one state to another, so it’s a wise idea to check which options are available in your area.
Here are some of the retailers that are now accepting food stamps for online shopping (for either delivery or pickup):
• Walmart
• Amazon
• Aldi
• Food Lion
• Publix
• FreshDirect
• BJ’S Wholesale Club
• Kroger
• ShopRite
• Fred Meyer
• Safeway
• Albertsons
• Vons
• Hy-Vee
5 Ways to Use Food Stamps to Buy Groceries Online
The rules for using food stamps online will vary by retailer. Here are some ways this transaction might work.
1. Use Food Stamps on Amazon
For example, when shopping on Amazon, you can add your SNAP EBT card, shop for groceries, and when you check out, you enter your EBT PIN to pay for eligible purchases.
2. Order Groceries With Food Stamps at Walmart
For Walmart, you can order groceries online or through the store’s grocery mobile app. You first need to sign into your Pickup & Delivery account and then select Payment Methods.
3. Use Food Stamps Online at a Local Store
If your local store accepts EBT Online, you’ll see an option to add your EBT card to your account and can then add your card. During checkout, you select EBT as your payment method. You can then enter your PIN and complete your order.
For instance, at ShopRite, you can order groceries online at Shoprite.com or via the store’s mobile app. During checkout, you can select Pay Online and then click the Place Order button. You can then choose the EBT Snap Card as the payment method to complete checkout. That’s another way to use food stamps online.
4. Know Which Are Non-SNAP Items
At some retailers, you can also include non-SNAP items in the same order, but you’d need to pay for them separately with a debit or credit card. If the store charges a delivery fee, that charge would also need to be paid via a separate payment card since service fees are not included in SNAP benefits.
5. Continue to Check As Options Expand
If you don’t find EBT SNAP as a payment option when attempting to order from your preferred grocery store, you may want to keep checking back — the coverage areas and list of participating stores continue to expand.

Other Ways to Save on Groceries
If you don’t qualify for SNAP benefits or are looking for additional ways to trim your grocery budget, try these tips. They can help you save, regardless of how much you usually spend on food per month.
Plan Your Meals
By planning your meals ahead and buying in bulk, you can save money on food. Say you decide in advance that you’ll buy chicken that’s on sale and make a stir-fry one day, a sheet pan dinner the next, and will grill it as well. You might even double up on your cooking and freeze leftovers for the following week.
Shop Solo and Stick to Your List
Impulse buys have a way of wrecking your food budget, and if you have your family with you at the supermarket, it can be more likely that they will spot enticing and expensive items. It can be more economical to hit the grocery store on your own and stay laser-focused on your list.
Use Coupons
Whether you choose to clip the old-school paper coupons or use some of the digital couponing options, those deals can help you stay on your budget. You may even be able to use coupons in a way that doubles their saving power for even lower prices.
The Takeaway
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — better known as food stamps — provides assistance to low-income people in the form of an EBT card that can be used to purchase certain types of food.
Many national retailers and supermarket chains now allow SNAP recipients to order eligible groceries online and then go into the store to pick them up, either in-store or curbside, or have them delivered.

11. Shop Online Instead of Going to the Mall
Shopping online for your Christmas gifts can seriously ease your holiday stress, and potentially save you money.
Let’s explore why skipping the mall and clicking your way to a merry Christmas might be your best bet this year:
No dealing with holiday crowds or cranky shoppers.
Enjoy sales and deals without leaving your home.
Track prices over time to grab the best deals.
Use Rakuten to save even more money on purchases.
For smart online shopping, prepare a list of gifts before diving in. Take advantage of the “wish list” option on platforms to curate items of choice and make sure you first glance over deal sites before making purchases.
12. Have a Christmas Potluck
Host a festive potluck! Invite friends and family, asking each to bring their favorite dish.
Here are some tips for a successful event:
Get organized and ask guests to bring specific types of food. This prevents duplicate dishes and ensures a balanced meal.
Introduce a fun element. Try a cookie swap or a silly game like “Guess the Cookie.”
Keep decor simple. A large vase filled with greenery and baubles can effectively replace a pricey Christmas tree.
Remember simplicity is key in food and decor. Costly ingredients and complicated recipes aren’t prerequisites for a memorable Christmas.
Remember, the holiday is about togetherness, not extravagance!
13. Make Your Own Cookies
There’s a unique pleasure derived from making your own cookies during the holiday season instead of buying them. More so, the cookies you’ve invested your time and creativity into can double as thoughtful, homemade gifts, adding another level of sentiment.
Apart from being a cost-effective option, it brings an opportunity to bond with friends and family during cookie exchange or decorating gatherings.
Making your personally crafted cookies also gives you control over ingredients catering to specific dietary needs or preference
Indeed, making your own cookies adds value that surpasses the mere cost savings, it infuses the holiday season with warmth, joy, and a sense of shared experience.
14. Cross Off Activities from your Christmas Bucket List
Having a joyful Christmas doesn’t necessarily mean overspending. In fact, integrating cost-effective activities into your holiday routine can make the season more meaningful and fun.
This Christmas Bucket list post offers an extensive and diverse list of creative ideas for budget-friendly Christmas shopping, gifting, and celebrating.
Additionally, downloading the free printables and a Christmas Budget Template will make the process even more manageable and fun.
15. Have a No-Gift Party
A no-gift Christmas party is an affordable and fun holiday celebration where attendees do not exchange gifts. It’s a great option for those looking to save money and still enjoy the festive season.
Here are steps to make it happen:
Step 1: Decide on the party type, either a simple gathering or a potluck dinner.
Step 2: Inform guests about the no-gift policy in advance.
Step 3: Organize exciting, cost-effective activities such as a game night.
Step 4: Engage guests with games for a joyful event.
Expert Tip: Conversation and laughter are your best tools.
16. Make a Christmas Memory Book
Creating a Christmas memory book is an affordable and engaging way to celebrate the holiday season, especially when you’re on a tight budget.
To start, you can utilize items already at your disposal in your house such as old photos, greeting cards, and crafts.
Spend some time penning down heartfelt messages and your favorite holiday memories associated with each picture or craft. Embellish the pages with affordable decorating materials like glitter, stickers, or color pens.
Not only does this create a personalized touch, but it also serves as a nostalgic keepsake that can be cherished for years to come.
Tip: Digitize your memory book by creating an electronic version. This can also help preserve the original items.
17. Spend Time With Loved Ones
Celebrating Christmas on a budget doesn’t mean skipping on the fun.
It’s about cherishing time spent with loved ones, harnessing creativity, and making priceless memories that last a lifetime.
Here are some cost-effective activities you can embrace this festive season:
Share stories of memorable Christmas experiences.
Organize virtual celebrations with extended family and friends.
Create your own family-themed board game.
Bake Christmas cookies or make a popcorn Christmas tree.
Stream a Christmas church service.
If snow is around, engage in snow play.
Dance to classic Christmas music.
Put together an annual family calendar.
Participate in one of these Christmas Challenges!
Remember, it’s not about what’s under the tree that matters, but rather, who’s around it.
18. Stash Christmas presents all year
Do what I do! Begin addressing the issue of holiday budgeting by stashing Christmas presents all year round.
This is a smart and stress-reducing move!
Find deals throughout the year rather than spending lavishly in December. Hang on to items like discounted gifts in your secret gift closet!
As you build an inventory of diverse items, you will be ready for birthdays or sudden party invites – you’re always prepared!
Just be careful to stop shopping when your list is fulfilled to avoid overspending.
19. Write a Christmas Gift List
Creating a Christmas gift list can be an effective way to manage your holiday spending. This helps you understand the overall picture of your holiday expenditure.
Start by writing down the names of every person for whom you consider buying a gift.
Then, determine how much you’re willing and able to spend on each individual. This helps you understand the overall picture of your holiday expenditure.
Take time to brainstorm potential gift ideas within your decided budget for each person. This process can be even easier and more informative if you’re able to reference a gift list from previous years.
Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that your total intended spending is reasonable and manageable for your personal financial situation.
Remember, you may not need to buy gifts for everyone on your list – some individuals might appreciate homemade or free gifts just as much.
20. Choose Great holiday things to do for less
Set aside the societal notion of linking the joy of holidays to copious spending, and welcome small, inexpensive, yet heartfelt gestures.
Adopting a mindset that finds value in low-cost or even free activities, especially during the holiday season, can not only alleviate financial pressure but also create cherished memories.
Instead of focusing on extravagance and materialistic desires, turning attention to experiences and emotional bonding can revolutionize the celebration!
You can always find things to do on Christmas Day.
21. Think Outside the Box With Gifts
Finding affordable gifts doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice quality or thoughtfulness.
By utilizing a gift guide such as the 4 gift rule – something they want, need, to wear, or read – you can ensure a well-rounded and meaningful set of gifts for each child.
Alternately, consulting lists of inexpensive yet creative suggestions like those curated by Money Bliss can help you find unique presents that won’t break the bank. These affordable finds range from books, gadgets, to personal care items, and home accessories.
Regardless of budget, the key to successful gift-giving lies in understanding the recipient’s needs and interests.
22. Consider Re-Gifting
Re-gifting is a practical, budget-friendly, and environmentally-friendly way to celebrate Christmas. It allows unused or unwanted items another chance to be appreciated and might save you some cash too.
Here are some regifting tips:
Ensure the gift is in good condition, unwanted but quality, and not linked back to its original giver.
Consider the preferences of the new recipient, ensuring the gift suits them.
Completely re-wrap the gift to give it a fresh appearance.
Some may debate the etiquette of re-gifting but remember, it’s more about the thought and less about where the gift originated.
Making smart choices can ensure a successful and fun re-gifting experience this festive season.
23. Use Gift Cards or Cash App to Stay on Budget
Purchase a prepaid gift card from your favorite store to ensure you’re limiting your spending to a specific amount and preventing the temptation of overspending.
If you’re planning to shop from a range of places, opt for a Mastercard of Visa prepaid card. While there may be an activation fee, it’s ultimately going to be less than what you’d potentially overspend.
Another great option is using the Cash App card and learn where you can load your Cash App card.
Also, you can use budget tracker apps like YNAB or Simplifi. These can help you meticulously keep track of your spending and stay within your budget.
Remember, the key is to stick to a budget and avoid falling prey to impulsive purchases. Using gift cards or these budgeting apps makes it easier to limit and monitor your expenses.
24. Use Money Gift Ideas Wisely
Money gift ideas can be an excellent alternative to traditional presents, especially when budgeting is a critical aspect.
Too many times, money gift ideas are overlooked as impersonal, but a money gift box or money cake will definitely surprise the recipient.
This will guarantee you will stay within your target budget by using money gift ideas.
For larger families, a gift exchange with a set price limit can keep costs manageable.
25. Donate to Charity Or Volunteer
Volunteering at a charity is a meaningful way to give back during the holiday season that doesn’t put a strain on your budget.
Instead of buying more items a person may not need, you’re investing time, money, and energy in causes they care about. Although this doesn’t require a financial commitment, it’s a generous gift full of sentiments.
Furthermore, donating money to a charity in someone’s name is a thoughtful and effective way to honor someone who already has everything they need. It allows the recipient to feel the joy of giving, yet remains a budget-friendly option for the giver.
If you’re keen on frugal yet meaningful ways to celebrate Christmas, how about considering charitable donations? It’s a splendid alternative to traditional gift-giving – not hard on your wallet, plus it makes a difference!
Most people know it is hard enough to buy gifts for the woman you who has everything or kids who have everything.
How to Make a Christmas Budget
A lot of joy and goodwill is associated with the holiday season; however, it also brings with it the challenge of managing finances meticulously to avoid slipping deep into credit card debt.
One of the effective ways to keep your finances under control during this festive time is by creating an efficient Christmas budget.
In the following sections, we will delve in detail into the simple process of creating a feasible Christmas budget that you can adhere to.
Step 1: Decide What You Want to Spend on Christmas
Determining how much to spend at Christmas depends on your individual budget and financial situation.
On a general basis, most people will overspend at Christmas in order they don’t look broke or not generous.
However, that thought process is backward if you are trying to reach your financial goals. You need to decide on how much you want to spend at Christmas time.
That is why these consumable gifts tend to be popular.
Expert Tip: Avoid surpassing your Christmas budget to prevent feeling the pinch of holiday debt later on. Stick to your allocations and plan things out in advance.
Step 2: Make a List of Christmas Gifts
Creating a list is essential for budget-friendly and stress-free Christmas shopping.
This prevents you from forgetting someone important by intuitively documenting all the people you intend to get gifts for. Also, allows for the clear allocation of your total Christmas budget, preventing overspending on some individuals and under-spending on others.
If you aim to economize, consider the 4-gift rule: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. This method provides thoughtful gifts for children while maintaining a manageable budget.
More importantly, a well-planned list significantly reduces the time spent shopping and aids in buying gifts early before the holiday rush begins.
Expert Tip: Don’t forget to consider items like stocking stuffers, last-minute gifts, or teacher’s gifts, and the cost of extra food for holiday gatherings.
Step 3: Prioritize Your Spending
Prioritizing where to spend money relative to your financial goals is crucial to achieving long-term financial stability and health. It ensures that your money is allocated effectively, giving priority to necessities and matters that directly support your objectives.
This practice can also prevent unnecessary expenditures and helps in averting serious overspending, especially during high-spending periods like the Christmas season.
Thus, you will need to prioritize your Christmas budget before the festive season. It helps prevent overspending and keeps you debt-free.
Step 4: Limit Your Christmas Spending
First, it is important to abandon the notion of a “perfect Christmas” and focus on enjoying the holiday within your budget.
You can even educate your family members about the concept of holiday budgeting and involve them in your planning process.
Consider proposing less expensive alternatives to traditional gift-giving within your extended family such as handmade or recycled gifts, or conducting a white elephant exchange with budget-friendly novelty items.
Don’t overlook smaller gifting costs that can accumulate, like Christmas stockings – instead fill them with practical, affordable items that your family needs.
Save money on wrapping supplies by using items readily available at home like newspaper or butcher paper and involve the kids in a fun, cost-saving activity by having them create homemade gift tags.
Remember, sticking to your budget doesn’t mean letting go of the Christmas spirit. It’s about celebrating responsibly and starting the New Year without financial stress.
Step 5: Ignore Sales and Keep it Simple
Sales, sales, sales – the deal is too good to pass up!
Here are key ways to overcome this common dilemma.
Resist impulsive purchases compelled by sales, and stick strictly to your shopping list.
Pause before purchasing an item not on your list, consider the necessity.
Keep emotions in check, they run our shopping decisions.
Conquer emotional spending, stay true to your budget.
Discourage additional spending once your list is fulfilled and the budget exhausted.
Remember that it’s better to focus on affordable presents rather than seeking the perfect, but expensive, gift.
Step 6: Shop for Christmas Gifts Early
Start early. Begin watching for sales on items from your Christmas gift list way before the season’s rush.
Begin monitoring for sales early, especially during holidays that precede Christmas, to stretch your budget further.
Make use of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. They provide excellent opportunities to snag deals on your gifts.
Expert Tip: Remember to stick to your list. If it isn’t on your list, pass it up. It’s challenging but keeps your budget in check.
Step 7: Reuse and Recycle Holiday Decorations
Start by taking stock of items in your house. Don’t limit yourself to traditional decorations—choose a color theme and scan your home for items that fit and can be repurposed.
Use the resources outdoors. Pine branches, pine cones, mistletoe, and holly can be fashioned into decorations from nature’s catalog.
Even consider trading decorations with friends or family. This can bring a new look to your home without the need for new purchases.
Get creative with items from dollar stores that can be combined to appear high-end and save costs.
