In addition to reading the CNBC article linked above, I also want to talk about how I grew a blog that has earned me over $5,000,000. I know I will get a lot of questions, so I figured it’s best to lay it all out right here 🙂
What started as just a hobby turned into one of the most life-changing things I’ve ever done – that’s starting my blog, and learning how to make money with it.
Since learning how to monetize a blog over 10 years ago, I have now earned over $5,000,000 from my site. This is still hard for me to believe, and I’m the one who’s lived it!
In the beginning, all I was doing was tracking my own personal finance progress as I finished school and started paying off my student loans. Blogging was a very new concept to me at the time – I heard about it from a magazine – and people were just learning how to monetize blogs back in 2011.
Most bloggers started back then with display ads and sponsored posts, but the options have only increased.
Because of all of the new ways to make money blogging, like affiliate income and selling your own products, you can make somewhat passive income as a blogger.
Passive income is my favorite way to make money because it makes blogging even more flexible and something I can do as I work from home, travel, and work whenever I want.
Blogging has changed my life for the better, and I’m now earning thousands of dollars a month doing something I love.
Learning how to monetize a blog takes work and time, but it’s 100% possible to do. I started earning money after just six months of blogging, and I didn’t even set out to make money when I created Making Sense of Cents. Just think of the potential if you start out knowing that making money blogging is possible!
Starting my blog is one of the best things I’ve ever done for my work, personal, and financial life. And, I urge anyone who is interested to start a blog and learn how to monetize it.
Many of my readers have heard this story, but I love sharing it because I started out like many of you, except I had no idea that blogs could make money. When I started Making Sense in August of 2011, I simply wanted a way to keep track of my financial progress and meet others who had similar goals.
As I started getting to know other bloggers in the community, a blogger friend of mine connected me with an advertiser who was willing to pay me $100 for an advertisement.
I couldn’t believe someone would pay me $100 to advertise on my site!
While it wasn’t a lot of money, especially considering the amount of time and work I put towards my blog in those 6 months, it was very motivating to see that something I loved doing could actually make money.
After that first $100, I started doing a lot of research on how to monetize a blog, and my blogging income quickly grew from there.
One year after I started my blog, I was earning around $1,000 a month, and I was making around $10,000 monthly two years after I started Making Sense of Cents.
My income only continued to grow, and I am still earning a healthy income from this website today.
If you want to learn how to monetize a blog and you haven’t started your blog, then I recommend starting with my free blogging course How To Start A Blog FREE Course.
Here’s a quick outline of what you will learn in this free course:
This is delivered directly to your email inbox, and you will learn how to grow a blog from scratch.
Sure, you can start on a whim, and that’s kind of what I did, haha.
But, I do think that creating a plan is a good idea if you want to learn how to monetize a blog. This can help you get an organized start, identify your blog’s niche, decide on your blogging goals, find opportunities for blogging income, and more.
It wasn’t until 2015 that I finally created a blogging plan (that’s 4 years after I started!), and my blog income grew significantly after that.
I credit that growth to creating a plan!
Having a plan would have been a huge help in the beginning, and I wish I would have started with one. I probably missed some income opportunities because I had no real plan or direction in the first couple of years.
Since creating a blogging plan, I became more focused on goals and motivated toward improving and building Making Sense of Cents.
Here are some questions that you may want to ask yourself when creating a plan for your blog:
Thinking about, researching, and answering these questions will help guide you on your journey and help you decide what to do next.
Your blog’s content is extremely important. This will be what attracts your readers, has them coming back for more, earns you blogging income, and more.
Now, you don’t need to be an expert or need a degree to start talking about a subject, but you do need to be knowledgeable or interested in what you are talking about. And, always be truthful! This will show in your writing and actually help your readers.
To write high-quality content on your blog, here are some tips:
If you want to learn how to monetize a blog, then networking can be extremely helpful.
Networking can mean:
Some bloggers don’t do any of these things and purely see other bloggers as competition. I don’t believe this is the correct way to approach blogging because you will hold yourself back immensely!
Networking is important because it can help you enjoy blogging (friends are nice to have, right?!), teach you new ideas (such as how to make money blogging or how to grow a blog), make valuable connections, and more.
Keep in mind that networking is even how I earned my very first $100 blogging. My blogging friend connected me with an advertiser, which helped changed my blogging journey.
I have learned a lot about blogging from the blogging community, and the people I’ve connected with have been a tremendous support as I’ve grown my blog.
Starting a blog is relatively easy. But, growing and learning how to monetize a blog takes a lot of work.
You’ll have to:
Even when I was just a new blogger and had no plans of making money blogging, I was still spending well over 10 hours a week on Making Sense of Cents.
When I was working my full-time day job and earning an income from my blog, I was working around 40-50 hours a week on my blog on top of my day job!
Now that I blog full-time, my hours vary. Some months I hardly work, and there are other months that I may work 100 hours a week.
It’s not easy, and there’s always something that needs to be done.
But, I absolutely love blogging, which makes the hard work a little less tough.
There are many different ways you can monetize your blog, including:
You could choose to monetize your blog using all of these methods, or even just one. It’s just a personal decision.
For me, I like to be diversified and monetize in many ways, so I do them all.
Below, I am going to dive a little deeper into each way to make money blogging.
Affiliate marketing can be a great way to make money blogging because if there is a product or company that you enjoy, all you have to do is review the product and share a unique affiliate link where your readers can sign up or make a purchase.
In fact, this is my favorite way to monetize a blog. I enjoy it because it can be quite passive – I can create just one blog post and potentially earn an income from it years later. This is because even though a blog post may be older, I am still constantly driving traffic to it and readers are still purchasing through my affiliate links.
Affiliate marketing is a blog monetization method where you share a link to a product or company with your readers in an attempt to make an income from followers purchasing the product through your link.
Here are some quick tips so that you can make affiliate income on your blog:
You can learn more about affiliate marketing strategies in my course Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing.
Advertising on a blog is one of the first ways that bloggers learn how to monetize a blog. In fact, it’s exactly how I started!
This form of blogging income is when you directly partner with a company and advertise for them on your website or social media accounts.
You may be writing a review for them, a tutorial, talking about their product or company, taking pictures, and so on.
If you want to learn how to increase your advertising-income, I recommend taking my Making Sense of Sponsored Posts course.
Display advertising is one of the easiest ways to make money blogging, but it most likely won’t earn you the most, especially in the beginning.
I’m sure you’ve seen display ads before. They may be on the sidebar, at the top of a post, within a blog post, and so on.
The ads are automatically added when you join an advertising network, and you do not need to manually add these ads to your blog.
Your display advertising income increases or decreases almost entirely based on your page views, and once you place the advertisement, there’s no direct work to be done.
If you want to learn how to monetize a blog through display advertising, then some popular networks include Adsense, MediaVine, and AdThrive.
Personally, I use AdThrive for my display advertising network. I don’t have many display advertisements on my blog, but it is easy income.
Another popular way to monetize a blog is to create a sell your own products.
This could be an online product, something that you ship, and so on, such as:
And the list goes on and on. I have seen bloggers be very successful in selling all kinds of things on their blogs.
What’s great about selling your own product is that you are in complete control of what you are selling, and your income is virtually unlimited in many cases.
I launched my first product about 5 years after I created Making Sense of Cents, which was a blogging course called Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. I regret not creating something sooner because this has been an excellent source of income and has helped many people along the way.
If you really want to learn how to monetize a blog, I recommend that you start an email list from the very beginning.
I waited several years to start my email list, and that was a huge mistake!
Here’s why you need an email list right away:
As a new blogger, you’ll want to find ways to attract a readership to your blog and your article.
No, you don’t need millions and millions of page views to earn a good living from blogging. In fact, I know some bloggers who receive 1,000,000 page views yet make less money than those with 100,000 monthly page views.
Every website is different, but once you learn what your audience wants, you can start to really make money blogging, regardless of how many page views you receive.
Having a successful blog is all about having a loyal audience and helping them with your content.
Even with all of that being said, if you want to learn how to monetize a blog, learning how to improve your traffic is valuable. The more loyal and engaged followers you have, the more money you may be able to make through your blog.
There are many ways to grow your readership, such as:
Now, I also want to talk about helpful resources, courses, and more that can help you to learn how to grow your page views on your blog.
Below are some of my favorite blogging resources to help you improve your traffic:
SEO (search engine optimization) is how you get organic search traffic to your blog.
When you search a phrase on Google, you’ll see a bunch of different websites as the results. This is the result of these websites applying SEO strategies to their blog.
This is a great way for readers to find your blog, and SEO is important to pay attention to as you learn how to monetize a blog!
Below are some of my favorite SEO resources:
Below, I’m going to answer some questions I’ve received about how to start a blog such as:
The amount of page views needed to make money blogging varies, and there is no magic number that you should be aiming for.
This is because it depends on so many factors, such as how you will monetize your blog, your niche, the number of email subscribers you have, the quality of your website, and more.
You may see success with 10,000 page views a month, or you may see success with over 100,000 page views a month. It simply depends on the factors above.
Beginner bloggers can make money in many different ways, such as display advertising, affiliate marketing, creating their own products, and sponsorships.
You can start any of these right from the very beginning.
Display advertising is usually the easiest way to begin monetizing a blog, but the payoff is not very high, especially in the beginning when your page views are not high.
I recommend just launching your blog as soon as you have one blog post and a design. Building a huge backlog of blog posts isn’t usually needed, and it can prevent you from ever getting started!
The more blog posts you have, then the more traffic you may get. That’s because it’s more opportunities to show up in Google searches or share your posts on social media.
I recommend publishing a new blog post at least once a week. Anything less isn’t advised.
Publishing blog posts consistently is smart because readers know to expect regular content from you.
Bloggers fail for many different reasons. These reasons may include:
And much more. Blogging is like any business – there are things to learn, things to improve on, and more.
If you have any other questions related to starting a blog, I recommend checking out What Is A Blog, How Do Blogs Make Money, & More. In this article, I answer more questions related to blogging such as:
And more.

If you’ve ever tried to crowdsource an answer to an obscure question or find cool stuff to do in a random city, you’re probably familiar with Reddit. The internet forum may feel reminiscent of a ‘90’s chatroom, but the site has a strong internet presence, an influential base of users (GameStop, ever heard of it?), and now, a path to becoming a public company.
In Dec. 2021, Reddit announced it had confidentially filed its IPO paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), but it held off on actually going public
. Now, Reuters is reporting the social network is planning to file publicly in late February and complete its IPO soon after. Reddit has even picked its future home: The New York Stock Exchange.
If you want to be ready to buy Reddit stock once it hits the market, here’s what you need to know.
Once Reddit has gone public, you’ll be able to buy Reddit stock. If you want to invest in Reddit as an individual stock when it becomes available, you’ll need an investment account. Investment accounts, or brokerage accounts, are not investments themselves — they simply house the money you use to buy investments, and your actual investments once you purchase them. There are several types of investment accounts, and it’s worth investigating which type is best for you since some offer tax advantages.
Once you open an investment account and add money to it — and Reddit goes public — you’ll be able to buy the stock. That being said, some brokers do offer access to IPO shares before they’re more widely available, but they may have mandatory investor assessments, account minimums or trade minimums.

While Reddit serves a slightly different function in a different format than its competitors (think more question-and-answer and in-depth discussion than Instagram pics and platitudes), the company is still entering a ring that already has a few heavyweight champs in it.
With competition such as Meta, TikTok and Pinterest, it may be difficult for Reddit to hold its own. Plus, sources from inside Reddit told Bloomberg that the company has yet to turn a full-year profit
. Reddit relies on two main income streams: Advertising revenue, and a paid plan called Reddit Premium lets users pay $5.99 per month to avoid that advertising. Both sources of revenue were met with protest from Reddit users when they were introduced.
When purchasing any stock you’ll want to consider the company’s fundamentals, such as its revenue, net income and earnings per share. When looking into a company that is new to the public sphere, such as Reddit, it can be difficult to find that information since private companies don’t have to produce regular reports. Once Reddit becomes public, that information will be more readily available because the company will be required by the SEC to provide regular financial updates.
Track your finances all in one place.
Find ways to save more by tracking your income and net worth on NerdWallet.
No one will know how much a share of Reddit stock will cost until its IPO price is announced, and even then, the market will have its say about the company’s value. But like any large or significant purchase, it’s a good idea to know how much you feel comfortable spending before you hit “buy.”
A good rule of thumb is to not invest more than 5% to 10% of your overall investment portfolio (that includes all your investment accounts, such as a 401(k), an IRA and any traditional brokerage accounts) in individual stocks. For easy math, that means if you have $100 to invest, you may only want between $5 and $10 to be allocated to individual stocks such as Reddit.
The rest of your account could be made up of funds, such as index funds. Funds offer instant diversification for your portfolio since they invest in lots of companies at once. That way, if one company performs poorly, your overall portfolio is bolstered by the performance of the other companies.
Once Reddit IPOs and is a publicly-traded company, you can decide how much you want to spend on its stock. If you open an investment account with a broker that offers fractional shares, you’ll be able to pay for your stock in a dollar amount rather than a share amount. That means if the price per share is more than you want to spend, you can purchase a fraction of a share rather than a full share.

Finding a job that lets you bring your child along can save you childcare costs and watching other people’s kids is one way to do it.
You could start your own day care or find a job at a day care.
If you want to start a home day care, then you will want to check your state’s rules for home day cares, such as if you need a license. You’ll also need a safe space for children, as well as toys and games.
You could also try to find a job at a day care in your local area. Many day care centers allow you to bring your child, or they will give you a discounted rate to have your child attend the day care as well while you work.
Another option is to become a nanny or babysitter for a family that allows you to have your child there as well.
Starting a day care, working in one, or becoming a nanny/babysitter can be a win-win. You earn money and don’t worry about finding someone to watch your kid. Plus, your child gets to play and learn with other children.

Selling printables is a great work-from-home business idea for single moms. This is because you can do this while your kids are sleeping or at school and earn passive income too!
Printables are digital files that people buy, download, and print themselves. These can include planners, calendars, wall art, grocery shopping checklists, weekly meal plans that someone puts on their fridge, and educational worksheets for kids.
You can sell your printables on websites like Etsy. This is a way to make money from home because you only need to make one digital file for each product, and you can sell it many times. You don’t have to print or send anything to your customers. You make the digital file; your customer buys it, downloads it, and takes care of the rest.

As a single mom, you may be looking for a job that fits into your schedule. Working as a virtual assistant (VA) could be your answer, as you get to work from home and choose hours that work for you.
I’ve worked as a virtual assistant before, and I also have virtual assistants who help me with my business. Many parents have told me that a virtual assistant job is one of the best jobs for stay-at-home moms because it’s very flexible, and I agree!
A VA is someone who works from home as an assistant for someone else. Nowadays, many businesses can be operated from home, so it makes sense that an assistant can also work from home.
A virtual assistant can do tasks like managing social media accounts, formatting and editing content, scheduling appointments, handling travel plans, managing emails, and overseeing Facebook groups, among other things.

You can schedule sessions around your life and help students learn. You pick when you work, which is perfect when you have kids at home. You might teach early mornings, afternoons, or even nights.
You will need a quiet place to work, a computer, and a good internet connection.
Income as a tutor ranges, and you may be able to earn $20+ an hour. And, if you specialize in something more advanced, like SAT prep or college courses, you could make more, even up to $50 per hour or more.
As a single mom, becoming a photographer can be a rewarding job choice for you. With a camera and some practice, you can start taking photos that people will enjoy.
To begin, you need a decent camera. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be the most expensive one. You also need to learn about lighting and how to frame a good picture. There are lots of free tutorials online, such as on YouTube, if you want to learn more.
One of the best parts about photography is that you can make your own schedule. You decide when to book photo shoots, which can be great for balancing time with your kids. It’s possible to do photo shoots on weekends or during special events like weddings.
You can earn money by selling your photos online or by working with clients directly. Graduations, weddings, family portraits, and even pet photos can be great opportunities. Pricing varies depending on the job, but as you gain experience, you can charge more for your work.
As you grow, you can invest in better equipment and editing software to enhance the quality of your photos. This helps you stand out and can lead to more jobs and higher pay.
I know many moms who are successful photographers, and they love having a photography business.

If you’re a single mom looking for a job that fits around your schedule, becoming an Instacart shopper might be a good choice. Instacart is a service that lets people order groceries online, and shoppers like you do the shopping and deliver the orders to their homes.
When you’re an Instacart shopper, you can set your own hours. This means you can work when it’s best for you, like when your kids are at school or sleeping. As a shopper, you get a payment card from Instacart to buy the groceries at the store.
Shoppers usually earn about $11 to $20 per hour. It’s important to remember that as an independent contractor, you will have extra costs like gas and vehicle maintenance that you need to think about when figuring out your earnings.

Paralegals earn around $30,000 to $35,000 a year.
As a single mom, if you’re looking for a job that lets you help people and have regular hours, you might like being a dental assistant. In this job, you work in a dentist’s office and help the dentist with patients.
Your tasks could include getting the tools ready, making sure patients are comfortable, and teaching them how to care for their teeth.
Your week would be busy, but you usually wouldn’t have to work nights or weekends. This is great because it matches up with your kids’ school schedule.
As a single mom, you may find that being a travel agent is a job that fits well with your life. It’s a job where you get to plan and book trips for others. You could work from home or an office.
Travel agents plan vacations, business trips, and getaways for clients and they find the best deals on flights, hotels, and fun activities.
The money you earn can vary because some agents get paid hourly and others get a commission, which is a part of the trip cost.
As a single mom, you might worry about balancing work with taking care of your kids. As a nurse, there are jobs that can fit your life.
Some examples include:
A speech pathologist helps people with speech and language issues. You would work to improve their communication skills, which can be very rewarding.
You need a master’s degree in speech-language pathology and certifications vary by state.
Your work may take place in schools, hospitals, or private clinics. Some speech pathologists work from home providing virtual sessions.
Sleep is really important for the growth and well-being of babies, and it’s important for parents too. But sometimes, parents find it hard to make sure their child gets the sleep they need.
Pediatric sleep consultants are very helpful in solving children’s sleep problems, making it easier for families to have peaceful nights. If you really enjoy working with kids and want to make a positive difference in their lives, becoming a sleep coach could be a great career option.
I have personally learned from sleep consultants in the past, and I know many others who have hired a sleep consultant as well. These are typically moms who have firsthand experience with improving a baby’s sleep.

I get it – as a single mom, you may have a lot of financial stress. It is hard to be a single mom and manage everything all on your own after all. To manage financial stress, I recommend trying to find jobs that pay well but also have flexible hours or work hours that match up with your children’s school schedule. Jobs that allow you to work remotely can also help lower your childcare expenses as you can work from home.
If you don’t have help or childcare, then you may want to work during hours when your kids are at school or asleep. This may include looking for jobs or employers who understand your situation and have flexible schedules or the ability to work from home.

Move over, coastal grandma, and say hello to eclectic grandpa, the latest nostalgia-fueled style taking the design and fashion world by storm. According to a Pinterest trend report, “grandpacore,” so to speak, is majorly in vogue, which makes total sense, given that vintage finds, academia-inspired accessories, and menswear fashions have experienced a major resurgence for the past several years. Bring on the cardigans, retro patterns, and leather accessories! This trend isn’t just for your wardrobe, however. In fact, we’d argue it’s even more fun to work into your home. Read on to learn all about this 2024 trend and how to pull it off in your space.
Is it weird that the first person I pictured when I heard the phrase “eclectic grandpa” is the Grandfather character from The Parent Trap? I mean, he’s just the epitome of this aesthetic. Always smartly dressed in some sort of thick knit blazer, he spends his days reading the newspaper in a wood-paneled study filled with books (with a crystal decanter nearby, because obviously). His character is just the right amount of quirky without being overly so.
To translate that same vibe into your home, it’s all about warm wood tones, vintage finds, classic patterns, and accessories that tell a story. Basically, you can think of the eclectic grandpa style as being coastal grandmother’s funkier, more masculine cousin.
If you’re eager to embrace this look in your home, here are some of our favorite ways to lean into the eclectic grandpa aesthetic.
If there’s one pattern that just screams eclectic grandpa, it’s plaid. For an easy, inexpensive way to introduce this pattern into your home, pick up a plaid throw blanket to drape over your sofa or at the end of your bed. Even better if you order one with your monogram, given that there’s nothing more grandpa-like than monogrammed linens.

Dark, rich wood tones are an eclectic grandpa must. To lean into this look without buying all new furniture, start with a classic wooden tray with a bit of funky flair. Use it to organize your work-from-home station or place it on your dresser to house perfumes and everyday hair and makeup products.
Every eclectic grandpa has a soft spot for a good sweater. When shopping for throw pillows, look for cozy sweater-like materials like wool, woven knits, or embroidered designs. For an even funkier touch, the Etsy find below featuring the Ralph Lauren Polo bear is about as eclectic grandpa as it gets—it will surely be a conversation starter and will cozy up your space in an instant.

Vintage leather and eclectic grandpa style simply go hand in hand, and a leather valet tray is the perfect way to try out the trend. Take to the flea market (or just Etsy!) in search of a piece that you’ll be excited to style on your desk or an entryway table. These are great for corraling small items like your keys, jewelry, lip balm, and more.

If you’re anything like me, you aren’t a smoker but absolutely love keeping ashtrays on hand throughout your home regardless. We all know that any eclectic grandpa loves a good ashtray, too, so it’s time to build out your collection while embracing this style trend. I personally use ashtrays as bases for candles (they make your average vessel look extra luxe) and place them on my nightstand to corral jewelry or on my coffee table to hold matchbooks and other small trinkets. Etsy is a great place to browse for vintage ashtrays of all kinds. These look like they could’ve actually belonged to your grandfather at one point (in the best way possible, of course).
The grandpacore life involves lots of slow mornings spent at home with plenty of reading material. If you want to go beyond a classic magazine rack, stash your magazine collection inside a vintage-looking trunk or one made from woven materials (these are also great solutions for shoe storage, extra linens, small purses, you name it). Pretend it’s a piece that’s lived inside of your apartment for decades on end—it beats any modern acrylic bin.

When you live in an apartment, you most likely won’t have a backyard or lots of outdoor space. However, a lot of apartment complexes include a patio on the ground level so you can step outside and enjoy some fresh air. Even if a patio is small, it doesn’t mean it can’t be grand. If you are looking for ways to spruce up your patio and turn it into a luxurious outdoor space, here are some small patio ideas to consider.
Whether you opt for all of these ideas or choose only a handful of these small patio ideas, you can turn any mundane patio into a place you’re dying to spend all your free time.
Just be sure to check with your landlord first before installing or building anything!
First on the list is finding a set of chairs and a table. Patio furniture comes in all shapes and sizes. You can get wrought iron, plastic or rattan to name a few. No matter what kind of patio furniture you choose, a table and chairs are essential because it’ll be the place you sit to eat, drink, read or simply relax.
If your patio is small, you’ll want to consider purchasing furniture that has multiple uses. For example, you could get a foot pedestal that also used as a small table, a footrest and a place to hold plants for decoration. If you can get each piece of furniture to serve more than one purpose, you’ll save money in the process, too.
Are you short on space on your patio? This small patio idea is perfect for those with cramped quarters. Buy foldable furniture that you can easily store when you’re not using it. You can easily access and use it when you need to, otherwise, you can quickly fold it and store it to add more space to your patio.
Mattresses don’t just belong in a bedroom. Putting a mattress on your patio is a great way to create a Bohemian-style feel on your patio. Take a blow-up or regular mattress, put some sheets over it, add some blankets and you’ve got created a comfortable and chic patio.
Pillows add both decoration and comfort to any patio space. Get some oversized pillows and add them to your patio, like this idea from Pinterest. You can put them on your chairs or use them as poofs to sit on. Pillows are a great way to add a pop of color to your patio as well as adding an element of comfort and design.
Like pillows, blankets are another way to spruce up any patio. On summer nights as the sun sets and it starts to get cooler, people will want to grab a blanket to drape over their lap as they continue chatting and hanging out into the night. Get a basket to fill with outdoor blankets and you’ve got yourself some small patio decor that’s practical and cute.
Music can set the mood on any occasion. From outdoor date nights to a casual gathering with friends on the patio, you need music to create ambiance. Invest in an outdoor speaker system for your patio. This could be a small speaker you plug your phone into, a smart home device like Alexa or even a full-blown speaker system. Regardless of what you choose, a speaker is a great small patio idea.
Movie projectors are a fun purchase to splurge on for your small patio. You can project a movie onto the wall of the apartment and watch it from the comfort of your patio. They don’t take up too much space but are a fun way to get outside more often.
Opting out of traditional patio furniture? Consider hanging a hammock on your patio. If you’re cramped for space or simply like to hang from a hammock, this is a great small patio idea to go for.
Given that patios are on the ground floor, you won’t have as much privacy as on a balcony. But, you can easily install a privacy screen, shutters or even curtains to your patio to create some privacy. Plus, you can have fun with the decorating process as you choose what color of the curtain you want or what color of paint to use on the privacy screen.
Candles are a great small patio idea. They don’t take up much space but add a lot of ambiance to any patio. Get a variety of sizes, shapes and colors and use candles to both decorate and light up your patio.
Strings of lights are another easy way to decorate your small patio. You can hang the lights from end-to-end, drape them around the table and chairs or hang them above the doorway. White string lights are cute, sparkly and practical and will make any patio feel like a fairy garden.
Rugs are a great way to decorate a small patio. First of all, they can add a pop of color to the patio. Second, they can cover up the ugly cement they likely were made of. And third, they make the space feel cozier.
Your patio may already be shaded, but adding an umbrella is a great small patio idea. Umbrellas easily move so you can block out the sun anywhere it comes through on the patio. Umbrellas also come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes.
Potted plants add charm to any patio. You can buy pots of all sizes, depending on how large your patio is. From small pots that fit on a table as a centerpiece to giant ones that take up lots of space, using pots as a small patio idea is a great way to add greenery to your patio.
If you don’t have a garden but want to plant some flowers, you can buy a few flower boxes for windows, ledges or gates. Add the window box and fill it with your favorite flowers.
Because patios often are small and short on space, think vertically when decorating. You can use ladders, tall planter boxes or racks and decorate upward instead of outward. This allows you to have lots of decorations without taking up too much space.
Barbecues go hand-in-hand with summer nights. Barbecues are a great product to invest in and add to your small patio. They may take up some space but it’ll be well worth it when you’re cooking and entertaining all summer long.
Just make sure they are allowed at your property before investing the money. Some cities do not allow grills on patios due to fire codes.
Bar carts are a fun item to have on your patio. You can choose a bar cart and start building up the contents over time. You can add different types of drinks, mixers, cups and ice containers to it. Not only is it a great small patio idea, but your friends will also love coming over and mixing themselves up a drink.
If your landlord permits, you can paint your patio. Consider painting the floor a fun color or one of the walls. This takes up no space and allows you to add more color into the space.
It doesn’t take a full-blown renovation to turn an ordinary patio into a place of relaxation and rest. Your patio can become your outdoor oasis with these easy ideas for decorating your small patio. Any one of these small patio ideas will surely turn it into a place you want to spend all your free time.

Republic Day, observed on January 26, is commemorated with parades and celebrations honouring India’s diverse cultural heritage. It is well worth seeing the magnificent Republic Day parade, which is customarily staged on the main Rajpath avenue and includes the Army, Navy, and Armed Forces in their full splendour. The parade’s major attractions include traditional dance troupes and floats from every state, along with a sky display by helicopters. As we approach the joyous occasion of Republic Day, let’s channel our love for the nation into the very fabric of our homes. Elevate your living space with a fusion of cultural aesthetics, vibrant furniture, and cosy textiles. (Also read: Republic Day 2024: 10 creative and easy-to-make drawing ideas for kids to celebrate the nation’s pride )
On Republic Day, everything takes on the colours of the Indian national flag. So why leave your house? While it’s rare to redecorate the whole room every year, you can show your love for the national colours by bringing out cushions in white, green and saffron. Use white cushions, green plants and saffron bed linen in your master bedroom to create a festive and patriotic atmosphere.
Who doesn’t love flowers? With their enchanting scent and vibrant colours, they can instantly create a festive mood. For a tricolour look, use marigolds, jasmine and green foliage and finish the arrangement with a flag. Whether you make a floral rangoli or create a tricolour flag with flowers, your home is sure to be ready for R-Day.
If you enjoy crafts, try making paper roses with coloured crepe paper, glue and wire. Use these paper flowers to decorate your home. You can make a string of flowers to hang in your window, or use them as a bouquet in a vase. Cut out flower shapes from coloured cards using a template. Use your imagination and let your inner child experiment. You can also make cut-outs in the shape of hearts, stars or tiny dolls. Use these beautiful shapes to make garlands, posters and banners.
Having a Republic Day party at your house or place of business? Make orange, white, and green helium balloons the focal point of your arrangement! Create a cheerful environment by arranging saffron, white and green balloons to turn your room into a visual symphony. Decorate corners, walls and ceilings with balloon clusters and garlands that symbolise the Indian tricolour. Use patriotic embellishments and accents reminiscent of flags to reinforce the theme.
Decorate your space with tricolour LED string lights to capture the essence of the Indian flag and create a vibrant aura of saffron, white and green. Use these energy-efficient lights to accent windows, doors and other focal points to create a sense of patriotism. Add a touch of style with LED light patterns inspired by national emblems or the Ashoka Chakra. Let the LED lights flash brightly at sunset to represent India’s unity, diversity and vibrant spirit on this memorable day.

There’s something about opening a new calendar that makes us want to feel our best. So this January, POPSUGAR is giving you everything you need to hit the reset button on your health, your habits, your beauty routine, and more. To find more articles about resetting your home, click here.
The past few years have been full of lessons. For a homebody and serial (re)decorator like me, here’s a big one: never underestimate the value of creating a home you like spending time in. (In some cases, a lot of time.)
Actually doing that is easier said than done, and there’s far from a one-size-fits-all approach. Some things — certain features of your space, or maybe your current circumstances — might make it tough to take on major changes or pricey reno projects. But one place we can all start? Finding (or creating) a home decor style that resonates, and then taking the steps, big or small, to bring it to life.
I’ve lived at 11 addresses in my life (a good chunk of those thanks to the New York City rental market), and made some questionable decor choices along the way. But my ninth home, a 350-square-foot studio apartment and my first solo adult space, was a significant turning point in understanding the power of making an empty box my own. Importantly, it allowed me to discover my eclectic and colorful decor style in the process.
Now, a few years and two places later, I’ve created a home that feels more personal — more like me and the partner I share it with — than ever. It’s an evolution of the style I established in that tiny studio that’s grown with me and that I know will only continue to.
So if you’re feeling inspired to rethink your space in the new year, or just looking for some advice to refer back to later, maybe I can help. Here are some decor tips to make your home feel more like you, so you can enjoy it to its fullest.
We do it with food, fashion, and even dating. So why does it seem so much harder to nail down an interior style (or styles) that we like? I have a hunch. Furniture and decor isn’t the same as fashion; it’s bigger, more expensive, and takes up more space. Aside from accruing blankets and tchotchkes, it’s much easier to own multiple coats or change a lipstick than it is to swap out your sofa or have another set of dining chairs in rotation. The pieces in your home are designed to be lived with every single day, and you want to like what you’re sharing space with. In this case, decision paralysis can be very real.
So, where to begin? You’ve got options. For some, an interior-design-style quiz can point you in the right direction (especially a thoughtful one from a designer, like this). For others, scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram are the best ways to find variety at your fingertips (and save what you like). Don’t overthink it; you’ll know what you’re naturally gravitating to.
I take a hybrid approach: saving and pinning while also snapping photos of things (hotel lobbies, wall and furniture color combinations in restaurants) I see in real life. I also browse online stores like AllModern, vintage furniture resale sites like Chairish, and even Facebook Marketplace.
When browsing, don’t ignore the small stuff — even if you don’t love the big picture. For example, you may not like the way a whole room looks, but you might love a particular side table. Or you might spot a pairing of textures you love in a lamp but find a way to use that combo in a mirror. I recently saw an aged, almost-black brown wood stool on Pinterest that inspired me to buy a similarly colored bar cabinet on Facebook Marketplace. It’s now one of my favorite pieces.
You may want your home to look like a magazine, or even the set of a Nancy Meyers film. But a few things you might be less keen on? Creating a carbon copy of someone else’s home or a time capsule of a hyper-specific decor style — early 2000s Olive Garden-style kitchens or Y2K bedrooms. (We can bring back blow-up chairs and lava lamps, though.)
While this can be hard to avoid as trends cycle in and out of style, mixing and matching can be a smart way to maintain a transitional look. Whether it’s pairing vintage with modern, incorporating family heirlooms into the mix, or laying trending patterns and textures (think: checkerboard or bouclé) over more subtle fabrics, this can help your space feel balanced and versatile.
Wherever you ultimately land may help define your decor style tastes even further. And that spot might sit somewhere between a few distinct decor styles, or many — coastal and Scandinavian, preppy meets French country, industrial with hints of art deco and glam. There’s no pressure to fit neatly into a box.
Let my space be an example: my living room is home to a mix of Chinese and Japanese accents, a Moroccan rug, a postmodern coffee table, a modern CB2 credenza with clean lines, a ’70s lamp, and curtains I found at Ikea. It’s eclectic and varied, exactly the way I like it.
All good things must come to an end, or at least change and grow. You’ll know when it’s time to let your space — or your tastes — evolve.
Maybe you’re moving into a bigger space and need the furniture to match, or maybe you’re entering a new phase of life and ready to replace an old table with a sturdier investment piece. In cases like mine, you might be transitioning from living alone to with a dog, a roommate, and eventually a partner. Or you might just generally be ready for something new.
Whatever the reason, trust your instincts about what stays and what goes, and take your time. You might want to keep sentimental artwork, statement furniture, and your sofa. But it might be time to change a rug, a table lamp, or your bedding.
And if you like what you’ve already created but just want to iterate on it, find replacement pieces with familiar qualities like colors, silhouettes, or patterns. Black-and-white patterns have become a staple of my spaces, as have bold uses of green in different shades. I interpret them a little differently each time — on a rug and then a headboard, or on towels and then a lamp — but now, they’re a signature. Wherever they are feels like home.

Is it worth it to start a blog in 2024? Is it profitable to have a blog?
If you’re thinking about starting a blog, then I think it’s a great time.
Whether you want to start a blog or create a social media account and make money on there (such as TikTok), a blog of your own is something that I always recommend. This is because you own your blog and you are in control!
Perhaps you’ve been thinking about starting a blog for some time, but you’re afraid that you have waited too long.
Every year I get the same questions from people who are thinking about starting a blog but are worried that it’s too late.
I also have friends who have started blogs in the past year or two and were told the same thing.
I still remember the early days from when I first started my blog.
I was so clueless when I first started my blog. And, it seemed like a very random thing when I first heard about blogging, but I decided to go ahead and create a blog of my own.
Making Sense of Cents was started simply as a way to keep track of my own personal finance journey. Most people in my life didn’t even know I had a blog.
It’s so funny to think back to when I first started my blog, but I’m so glad I gave blogging a chance. I can’t imagine how different my life would be if I had listened to the people who said it was too late to start a blog.
Because of how blogging changed my life, I love telling others about it. That’s exactly what I’m doing today if you are on the fence about starting a blog.
Blogging helped me pay off my debt, quit my regular job, travel full-time, and more. The best part is that I love what I do. And, as you can tell from my business income reports, I now earn a great living from my blog.

2024 is not too late to start a blog, but you will want to get started! I hear from so many bloggers who have delayed launching their blogs because they are afraid.
Well, you won’t know how blogging will go for you unless you start a blog.
Yes, blogging has changed over the years, but it is constantly changing and always will be. You will have to do things differently than when I first started blogging, but that’s normal with any online business, job, and so on.

I often hear, “But there’s so many blogs out there now.” Yes, there are many blogs, but there is still space. It’s all about finding your own voice and attracting your own audience.
I am still finding brand new blogs that I love, and it’s exciting watching them grow.
Everyone is different, and everyone has their own point of view.
Of course, just like with any time, you will have to find ways to make your story stand out, grow your audience, and more. But, that is completely normal.
Plus, there are so many social media platforms that you can grow on as well, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and more.
Companies and brands are still putting money toward investing in blogs and social media accounts.
Companies are increasing their marketing budgets, specifically to grow their market and audience through blogs.
And, that’s where you and I come in!
Before, companies usually would advertise and promote their products through celebrities, TV shows, movies and more. However, these days, so many people are buying products from things that they see from their favorite bloggers and social media accounts, and companies are definitely noticing this and are putting more of their marketing budget toward it.

Okay, so not everyone will love having a blog. That is completely normal! After all, not everyone likes every single job out there either.
But, for me, I absolutely love blogging. And, I know many others who do as well.
I enjoy helping others improve their financial situation, reading blog posts from other bloggers, finding new people to talk to, working on my blog, and especially writing.
I love waking up each morning to work, and I no longer dread work like I did when I had my day job.
Blogging is both challenging and rewarding, as there is always something new to learn. And, it’s a lot of fun to reach and connect with new people through your blog.

Want to see how I built a $5,000,000 blog?
In this free course, I show you how to create a blog, from the technical side to earning your first income and attracting readers.
A blog is very affordable to create.
I spent less than $100 total for the whole first year of Making Sense of Cents.
If you are interested in taking the steps to learn how to create a blog, I have a tutorial that will help you create a blog of your own for cheap, starting at only $2.75 per month for blog hosting (this low price is only through my link). In addition to the low pricing, you will receive a free website domain (a $15 value) through my referral link if you purchase at least 12 months of blog hosting.
This means you can learn how to start a blog in 2024 and make money for less than $50 a year.
I started my blog with super cheap blog hosting, and I designed it myself (even though I had no experience ever doing something like that).
I did pretty much everything myself so that I could save money, and while it was a learning experience, it was well worth it.
This is great because you can start a blog, test it out, and not spend a lot of money.
Do you want a flexible schedule? What about controlling how you make an income? Want to work from home?
By starting a blog, these are all things that you can be in control of. You get to be the decision-maker when it comes to deciding on what type of business you’ll run, your schedule, your goals, the topic you write about, and more.
I love being in complete control of what I do, and becoming self-employed may allow you to feel that way as well. I enjoy deciding what I will do each day, creating my own schedule, determining my business goals, handling everything behind the scenes, and more.
I get asked this all the time, “Do I need to be good at social media or know how to code in order to start a blog?”
No!
You definitely do not.
In order to become a blogger in 2024, you don’t need previous experience. You don’t need to have a computer degree (I don’t think I know any bloggers who do, haha), previously be active on social media, or know how to design a website.
These are all things that you will learn as you go, or you may even hire some tasks out.
Nearly every single blogger was brand new at some point, and they had no idea what they were doing.
I’m proof of that. I had just learned that blogs existed when I started Making Sense of Cents, and I definitely didn’t know that bloggers could make money. I learned how to create a blog from the bottom up and have worked my way to where I am today.
Now, that doesn’t mean that blogging is easy. It will require hard work and the beginning can be tough. But it is something that you can learn.
One of the great things about starting a blog in 2024 is that there are many free resources that can help you get started.
In fact, I didn’t spend any money in the beginning in order to learn how to blog – instead, I signed up for free workshops, free resources, and more. Since I didn’t know what I was doing, I knew that I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.
Here are some free resources to help you learn how to start a blog.
Here are some things to keep in mind in order to create a successful blog:

Yes, blogs can still make money in 2024. I think starting a blog can definitely be worth it and valuable. You can turn your hobbies, expertise, and/or creativity to start a profitable blog. And, even if you don’t have strong writing skills, that is something that you can learn as you go.
Luckily, you don’t need much to start a blog either. An internet connection, computer, and a domain name are the best ways to start!
Not everyone starts a blog because it isn’t for everyone.
That would be like saying that becoming a zoologist or an astronaut is for everyone.
Everyone has different skills, different passions, and more.
So, not everyone will want to be a blogger. That is completely fine.
Learning how to earn money blogging is work, and just like with all jobs – not everyone wants what you want.
And, for every successful blog out there, there are probably hundreds of bloggers who will never earn money blogging. While you can earn money blogging, not all bloggers will.
It would be like saying that 100% of people who start a business will see success. That is just never going to happen – businesses fail, business owners have a change of heart, and others just don’t find it enjoyable.
I know I am always talking about the positives of blogging, but I also like to mention how it’s not the easiest.
After all, if blogging was easy, then everyone would do it and everyone would make thousands of dollars a month.
But as you know, that’s not the case.
Not everyone is going to earn money blogging because it can be a lot of work! Most new bloggers quit just a few months in. A few months is not enough time to see if your blog will be successful. It took me six months before I started to earn money blogging, and I only earned $100.
It’s funny and weird to think about what life would be like if I would have quit back then.
I’m constantly learning something new when it comes to blogging, and that is why I enjoy it so much.
If you are interested in starting a blog, I do recommend giving it a shot.

Home decor is a manifestation of personal style, and 2024’s interior design trends provide even more ways to express your point of view—boldly.
The accent walls and mid-century modern furniture that ruled 2023’s interior design trends aren’t disappearing entirely. But in the upcoming year, we can say goodbye to standard design rules and all-minimal-everything. Embrace clashing patterns, chrome counters, ultra-luxurious materials, and maximalism. Whether that means trading in beige soft sheets for a Barbiecore pink bedding set, or adding bow-adorned wallpaper to your kitchen a lá Sandy Liang, nothing is off-limits in 2024.
Like a fun pair of heels or sparkly party dress, 2024’s home trends are all about embracing creativity and fun. With expert input from interior designers and trend predictors, explore the five most popular interior design trends of 2024 that will help you express your individuality through your space.
Gone are the days of clean marble and white walls in the kitchen. In 2024, we can expect to see more personality, color, and spunk in this essential area.
“We’re going to say goodbye to farmhouse kitchens, and hello to Kitschy Kitchens, or what we like to call ‘Kitschens,’” says Pinterest global trends and insight lead Sydney Stanback. “A way that people can tap into this trend is through incorporating thrifted finds, vintage appliances and eye-jarring pops of paint into their kitchen designs and cooking areas.”
Clean white walls are on their way out. “Having languished in the realm of neutrality for what feels like an eternity, we’ve witnessed the rise and subsequent demise of farmhouse, mid-century modern, and the all-encompassing minimalism craze. The universal aesthetic is teetering on the edge of ‘been there, done that,’” says Danielle Walish, Havely’s VP of merchandising and product design. “People are craving homes with character, personality, and a bit of oomph–a bold departure from the subdued styling that has held sway for too long.” Now, it’s time for a pattern on pattern (on pattern) renaissance.
“We’re not just talking about a small print here and there,” Walish elaborates. “It’s all about mixing it up–upholstery, textiles, wallpaper and beyond. From classic stripes to whimsical florals, modern motifs to organic botanicals. It’s all about making a statement.”
First chrome metallics came for statement earrings, then they came for home interiors. In 2024, metallic hues will enter living spaces in a new, big way.
“A trend that we’ve been seeing pop up recently, specifically within the fashion space–thanks to a certain very iconic artist who was on tour this summer–is cool silver tones. And cool silver tones and bold chrome will continue to grow in 2024, but will also evolve into the home category,” Pinterest’s Stanbuck says. “People trade in their trusty neutrals for something a bit more hardcore. We especially see that Gen Z and Millennials on Pinterest are driving this heavy metal aesthetic.” Aluminum accents are a shortcut to bring the shiny trend into home decor.
Whether you want a pop of pink or a moody sitting room, 2024 is all about accessorizing with color. “From rich blacks and sultry navies to more lively hues of blues, greens, and even pinks, the color trends of 2024 advocate for a daring approach,” says Havenly design editor Heather Goerzen. “Excitingly, we’re observing a refreshing pushback against the ubiquitous all-white aesthetic. Whether through the application of monochromatic paints or the embrace of deep, saturated color schemes, color in all its glorious shades is reclaiming the spotlight.”
The expert notes that the trend manifests everywhere from painted alcoves and striking wallpapers to deep wood tones and evocative upholstery. “If ever there was a moment to unleash your color perspective,” Goerzen says, “it’s now.”
Quiet luxury was never just about fashion; it also crept into the home. “A year ago, everything, everywhere, was light-washed oak, calacutta marble, and matte accents,” Havenly VP of creative and design Shelby Girard reflects. “At first, this felt like such a refreshing scene–it was simultaneously calm and inspiring, collected and effortless. However, with such widespread adoption, particularly with new builds, the aesthetic began to feel a little…expected.” That’s why, in 2024, we’re seeing a return to luxurious materials of yore.
“As traditional design is once again taking center stage, we’ve seen a backlash against the usual materials and a desire to seek out elements that in and of themselves are more unique, dramatic, and notable,” Girard explains. “Think richly veined marbles in a range of striking colors, lush velvets with added dimension, crystal chandeliers for a hint of glamour, dark wood tones that speak to heritage, and un-lacquered hardware for a lovely patina.”
