Cars are integral to our daily lives: We drive them to and from work and school. We use them to get groceries and go to the doctor. And, when our budget allows, we use them to get out of the house and treat ourselves to an evening of fun.
But what happens when your car breaks down and you don’t have the money saved up to fix it? That’s a reality for more than half of Americans, according to Bankrate’s 2023 Emergency Savings Report, an annual survey done in partnership with the survey and market research firm SSRS. Almost 60% of Americans say they wouldn’t use cash from emergency savings to pay for an unexpected car repair. Instead, they’d turn to credit cards, friends and family, or personal loans.
Using personal loans for car repairs can be a good solution when you don’t have the cash on hand, and it may be more affordable than paying with a high-interest credit card. Below, we’ll explore the pros and cons of using personal loans for car repair as well as some alternative options.
What Personal Loans Are and How They Work
A personal loan is a loan from a financial institution that borrowers can use for a wide range of purposes, from weddings and vacations to debt consolidation and medical costs to home renovations and, yes, car repairs. You’ll repay your personal loan, plus interest, over a set number of months.
As you start to explore your options, it helps to understand how personal loans work and the different types of personal loans available.
Pros and Cons of Personal Loans for Car Repairs
Taking out a personal loan to cover the cost of car repair can be helpful, but are there drawbacks to consider? Let’s review the pros and cons:
Get fast funding to cover repairs
Prioritize your family’s safety on the road
Ensure you can still drive to and from work to generate income
Temporary drop in credit score
Avoid high-interest credit card debt to cover repairs
Less room in monthly budget
• Get fast funding to cover repairs: Many personal loans offer same- or next-day funding, which means you can pay for car repairs quickly and get back on the road.
• Prioritize your family’s safety on the road: Without access to cash, some drivers may be tempted to forego necessary repairs and put themselves, their families, and other drivers in danger by driving with a damaged vehicle. A personal loan allows you to pay for damage now at a potentially lower cost before the issue grows and becomes more expensive to fix.
• Ensure you can still drive to and from work to generate income: Despite the advent of remote working, many people still rely on their vehicle to get to and from their job. Without it, you’ll need to pay for rideshare or a car rental or depend on the kindness of a coworker to give you a lift. Otherwise, you may need to skip work and miss out on that pay. Repairing your car quickly with a personal loan helps ensure you can get yourself to and from work on time.
• Avoid high-interest credit card debt to cover repairs: Many Americans reach for their credit card to cover the cost of emergency car repair. According to Bankrate’s 2023 survey, 25% of respondents said they’d swipe their card to pay for repairs. The problem? More than a third of Americans have more credit card debt than emergency savings — and such debt can be hard to overcome when you don’t have funds set aside for unexpected expenses.
• Increased debt: The biggest drawback of taking out a personal loan is the increased debt. Sometimes debt is necessary, like taking out a mortgage to buy a home or getting a student loan to pay for college. However, if it’s possible to avoid debt for small expenses like car repair, you typically should. That said, fixed-rate personal loans may be a more manageable form of debt for borrowers than a variable-rate credit card.
• Upfront fees: Many personal loans come with origination fees at the start, especially for borrowers without great credit. These fees, plus the interest on the loan, mean you’ll end up spending much more for the car repair than you would if you paid out of pocket.
• Temporary drop in credit score: While many lenders allow you to prequalify for a personal loan without an impact on your credit score, there will be a hard inquiry on your credit report when you officially apply. Such hard inquiries temporarily lower your credit score, but don’t worry: Your score will likely rebound over time, and if you responsibly manage your personal loan, you may even see it grow higher than when you started.
• Less room in monthly budget: When you take out a personal loan, you’ll have fixed payments for a set number of years. It’s crucial that you make these payments every month and on time. That means you’ll have a little less room in your budget until it’s paid off. If you’re living paycheck to paycheck or struggling to build your emergency savings, this tighter budget can be problematic.

How to Use a Personal Loan for Auto Repairs
Personal loans are straightforward. Aside from a few restrictions that vary by lender, you can use personal loans for almost anything. You’ll apply and, upon approval, have the funds deposited in your checking account. Then you can take that money and pay the mechanic directly to repair your car.
Applying for a Personal Loan
So how do you get a personal loan for car repairs? First, make sure you meet a lender’s requirements, and then you can go through the application process.
These are the typical personal loan requirements you’ll need to meet to get approval:
• Credit score: Each lender will have its own personal loan credit score requirements. If you have bad credit, don’t sweat it: There are lenders out there with personal loans for poor-credit borrowers. Just expect to pay higher fees and interest.
• Collateral: Many personal loans are unsecured, meaning you don’t have to put up any collateral. However, if you are struggling with your credit score, you may have an easier time getting approved (and at a lower rate) if you’re willing to put up collateral, such as your car.
• Proof of income and employment: Lenders want to know that you have a means of repaying the loan. To that end, you may need to prove that you’re employed — and that you make enough to cover the monthly payment.
• Debt-to-income ratio: Lenders commonly analyze your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio, which compares your monthly debt payments vs. the amount of money you make in a month. The lower the ratio, the more likely you are to be approved.
• Origination fee: Some personal loans may include an origination fee to be paid up front, often expressed as a percentage of the loan amount (somewhere between 1% and 10%). You may be able to pay this out of pocket, but often lenders roll it into the loan’s total cost or even deduct it from the loan amount you receive.
Recommended: Compare Personal Loan Rates and Terms
When you’re ready, you can apply online, over the phone, or in person (it’ll vary by lender). You’ll usually hear back about approval quickly — and may even receive the loan funds on the same day.
Many lenders let you check your personal loan rates and eligibility online before you apply. There’s no hard credit inquiry for this, so it’s a nice way to see if you qualify and compare lenders.
Alternatives to Personal Loans for Auto Repairs
The ideal alternative to getting a personal loan to fix a car is paying with cash from your emergency fund. But if you don’t have an emergency fund — or don’t have enough saved up yet — paying with credit is your main option.
Personal loans are a top option, but there are some alternatives to personal loans for auto repairs:
Many mechanics will let you pay for auto repair with a credit card. This can be an attractive option if you have a rewards credit card that pays cash back.
The problem is that many borrowers have variable-rate credit cards with high APRs. If you don’t pay off the debt quickly, the interest charges will start to rack up.
Title loans allow you to use your car as collateral to secure funding. It’s a common option for bad-credit borrowers who can’t afford car repair, but be cautious: These loans are short-term, and if you don’t repay yours, the lender will take your vehicle from you.
This is a last-resort loan. For most borrowers, there’s likely a better, safer option.
Payday loans are convenient for borrowers who need cash now, because there’s usually no credit check or collateral, and you can get the money right away.
The catch? These predatory loans can have high fees and interest rates reaching more than 600%. When it’s time to repay the loan (your next payday), you might find that you can’t afford to repay it — and you’ll have to take out a bigger loan to pay off the first one.
If you’re thinking about a payday loan for car repair, it’s a good idea to reconsider. Payday loans can lead to mounting debt and bankruptcy. And even if you pay yours off, it typically won’t help build your credit score (most lenders don’t report on-time payments to credit bureaus).
Instead, you might want to consider other alternatives, like secured personal loans or even a loan from friends and family. 💡 Quick Tip: Just as there are no free lunches, there are no guaranteed loans. So beware lenders who advertise them. If they are legitimate, they need to know your creditworthiness before offering you a loan.
Personal loans for car repairs may be a smart option when you don’t have the cash on hand. With a personal loan, you can get fast funding to pay for the repairs within a day or two, and the small available loan amounts mean you don’t have to borrow more than you need. There are some alternatives to personal loans for auto repairs, including credit cards. However, if you’re unable to pay off what you owe quickly, the interest charges will begin to pile up.
Think twice before turning to high-interest credit cards. Consider a SoFi personal loan instead. SoFi offers competitive fixed rates and same-day funding. Checking your rate takes just a minute.
SoFi’s Personal Loan was named NerdWallet’s 2023 winner for Best Online Personal Loan overall.
Can personal loans be used for car repairs?
Yes, you can use personal loans for car repairs. In fact, unexpected emergencies such as car repairs are a very common use case for personal loans. You can use personal loans for almost anything.
What sorts of financing can you get for a vehicle repair?
Drivers who can’t afford vehicle repair with their own emergency savings can consider a number of financing options, including personal loans and credit cards.
While title loans and payday loans are alternatives, they’re generally a risky solution that could lead to car repossession, major debt, or even bankruptcy. Similarly, some mechanics may offer their own financing, but Consumer Reports warns that these loans can be predatory, with interest rates up to 189%.
Is getting a personal loan to repair a car a good idea?
If you can’t afford to repair your car out of pocket, a personal loan can be a good idea. Personal loans may have lower rates than a credit card, and making on-time payments on your loan could even help boost your credit score.
And if the alternative is not fixing your car, you’ll either have to drive an unsafe, damaged vehicle or get around without an automobile — which can be inconvenient and lead to lost wages if you miss work.

According to IBM’s annual Cost of a Data Breach report, the average cost of a data breach to an organization in 2021 was 4.24 million dollars. That’s the highest average figure in its 17-year history. Most of these breaches were the result of compromised user credentials (where an attacker is able to gain unauthorized access to an account) and are often more costly where remote working is involved.
These breaches aren’t just costly for large enterprises, though. Many small organizations fail to recover from a serious data breach (where the average cost is just under $700,000), with 60% of them going out of business within 6 months of an attack.
But of course, we can also fall victim to cyber attacks as individuals, and the cost to us can be significant, too. If you’ve been unlucky enough to have been a victim of a data breach, or (worse), identity theft, you’ll know that you can lose eye-watering and potentially crippling sums: this hacking victim lost over $13k in 2020.
But when we talk about the cost of a cyber attack to an individual, we’re not talking simply about financial losses.
How to Avoid a Cyber Attack
Psychologically, the after-effects of a cyber attack can be damaging. The feeling that you’ve been manipulated by a stranger (and your personal data has been ‘invaded’) can be deeply unsettling. It can lead to a serious loss of confidence, and make you increasingly wary of trusting others. It can cause embarrassment, too, as a victim of a hack can be made to feel as if it’s their fault.
I just watched a documentary on the dark web, and I will never feel safe using my credit card again!
Luckily I don’t have to worry about that. I have ExtraCredit, so I get $1,000,000 ID protection and dark web scans.
I need that peace of mind in my life. What else do you get with ExtraCredit?
It’s basically everything my credit needs. I get 28 FICO® scores, rent and utility reporting, cash rewards and even a discount to one of the leaders in credit repair.
It’s settled; I’m getting ExtraCredit tonight. Totally unrelated, but any suggestions for my new fear of sharks? I watched that documentary too.
…we live in Oklahoma.
In the most extreme cases (where a cyber attack has led to a significant loss of funds or even the loss of a job) the effect can be even more harmful, leading to stress, anxiety and even depression. Whatever the financial cost of an attack, the emotional cost is often far more significant in the long run.
Fortunately, there are a number of steps you can take to secure your data and ensure you’re aware of the threats you might face while online.
Check If Your data Is at Risk
Without knowing it, your data might have already been involved in a breach. A breach usually occurs when a hacker gains access to the database of a service or company which contains users’ private information, including (but not limited to) usernames, passwords, email addresses and, in the worst cases, bank account details. If you’ve been involved in a data breach, some of your personal information might have been made public without you realizing, which could put you at risk of identity theft.
But don’t panic. You can check if your email address or phone number has been exposed in a data breach by going to Have I Been Pwned. If any of your accounts may have been compromised, change those passwords immediately, and make sure you’re not reusing the same passwords across multiple accounts.
Use Strong Passwords
Speaking of passwords, nearly a quarter of Americans have admitted to using a password like “password” or “123456”. These should clearly be avoided, as they’re easily guessable and won’t take long for a hacker to crack. The longer and more complex a password is, the stronger it is. You can check the strength of your passwords at Security.org.
Using a “passphrase” (a series of unrelated words with spaces in between) is often more effective than using a simple combination of letters and numbers, as these can be harder to crack. This can help to protect your accounts from threats like brute-force attacks, in which attackers will submit vast numbers of possible passwords in an effort to guess correctly.
Protect Your Website(s)
This action may not apply to you, of course — but if you happen to run a website (for a small business, perhaps, or even just a hobby such as blogging) then your personal information is inextricably linked to it, and it can be a huge point of vulnerability. If someone gains access to it through a CMS exploit or a comparable weakness, they can learn your passwords, uncover private information, or even hold the site hostage in an effort to extort you.
Keeping extortion efforts at bay is largely a matter of investing in technical safeguards. Top managed hosting platforms are particularly good at keeping ahead of potential attackers, and some (e.g. Cloudways with its 2022-launched Cloudflare CDN integration) are investing in native features that make it all but impossible for run-of-the-mill hackers to gain access. Overall, though, the biggest thing you can do is refrain from storing any sensitive information on your website. Anything intended for public viewing inevitably makes a bad storage vault.
Beware of Suspicious Emails
One of the most common ways individuals fall victim to cyber crime is through phishing attacks, a type of ‘social engineering’ where an attacker sends a fraudulent email to an intended victim enticing them to click a suspicious link or hand over personal information. Phishing emails often appear as though they’re from a legitimate organization (like your bank, for example) but there are some classic signs to look out for.
Check the email domain (the bit after the @ symbol) to see if it looks legitimate. If it’s misspelled (or a public domain like gmail.com) it could be a scam. Next, check for poor spelling and grammar in the body of the email, as phishing attempts are often shoddily written. If you have the slightest suspicion that the email may not be legitimate, do not respond or click any links in the email. To ensure you’re aware of the telltale signs, IT Governance has produced a handy guide on the ways to detect a phishing email.
Update Your Software
Cyber threats are constantly evolving, with hackers developing newer, more sophisticated ways to gain access to our devices and our personal data. That’s why it’s so important that our operating systems and software programs are always updated to the latest available versions. These newer versions will fix previously discovered vulnerabilities and offer greater protection against emerging threats.
If you’re still using an outdated operating system, for example, it may contain weaknesses that can quite easily be exposed by an attacker, especially if those weaknesses are public knowledge. Use a tool like Soft4Boost to check for out-of-date and potentially vulnerable software, and update to the latest supported versions where necessary.
Secure Your Devices
It’s also important to protect our physical devices, as a lost or stolen device could present an easy opportunity for an attacker to gain access to your personal data. Ensure a password or PIN is always required to access the device (and don’t use anything easily guessable like 0000 or 1234). Many devices now enable facial recognition or fingerprint access, so enable these functions where possible. When you’re not using your device, make sure it’s locked.
Backing up your data is essential, too, so that it can be recovered in the event of a data breach. Most computers will include a backup facility, while mobile phone data can usually be backed up using cloud storage. Finally, beware of unsecured public Wi-Fi networks (where no password is required for access) as these are often prime targets for an attacker, and disable your Bluetooth function when you’re not using it.

Today we’re releasing an updated version of our commercial real estate technology market map. The full list of companies is available here, and a high-resolution version of the map can be accessed here. This market map includes more than 220 technology companies operating across every aspect of commercial real estate, and range from seed stage businesses to public companies. If you’d like to suggest a company to be added to this market map, please submit them using this form.
Broadly defined, commercial real estate (CRE) includes any property owned to produce income. In total, more than 100 billion square feet of space in the United States is devoted to commercial use. Because commercial property is acquired for investment purposes, it differs from its residential counterpart in several important ways:
Commercial real estate is a diverse asset class that can take on many forms: office buildings, retail stores, malls, apartment complexes, homes, hotels and more.
Every property is analyzed for its ability to generate income. In most cases, there is a leasing component to commercial property ownership (which is the main revenue-generating activity), whereas in residential real estate properties are often owner-occupied.
Commercial properties are actively managed by teams responsible for leasing, routine maintenance, improvements and amenities to ensure that the building is suitable for occupants.
As the map above indicates, there are hundreds of technology companies across every aspect of the commercial real estate lifecycle, from property search and financing, to leasing and ongoing management. You’ll notice that several companies are included in more than one section — this is due to the fact that many of these businesses have expanded their product areas to capture multiple phases of the CRE lifecycle. For example, VTS recently launched a listings marketplace offering to compliment its suite of leasing and asset management tools. As such, we’ve included VTS in both the “Find Property” and “Manage Property” sections.
Assessing the Impact of COVID-19 on Commercial Real Estate
It’s no secret that the pandemic has dramatically altered our ability to utilize commercial real estate. The pandemic has impacted every CRE segment (office, hospitality, retail, etc.) and every phase of the asset ownership lifecycle (leasing, financing, utilization, etc.). The pandemic will likely continue to influence occupiers and end users of real estate in unprecedented and unique ways, which will have implications for the entire CRE industry.
This is particularly true in the office segment, as the abrupt change in the way we work has required mass remote working. Interestingly, as companies have transitioned from office work to remote work, many employees are reporting no meaningful impact on productivity. Even as lockdowns are slowly eased, as many as 75% of employees prefer to work from home out of caution or convenience. This has caused many in the industry to ask: Is the office as we know it dead?
Given these lingering existential questions, we’re witnessing the reimagining of office environments designed to anticipate what the “next normal” will look like. Tenants and landlords are working hard to determine an approach for re-entering the office, and the impact of remote work on future space needs. While there are many questions we’ve yet to answer, we anticipate the office category evolving in several important ways, and expect technology companies to play a central role in that evolution:
Emphasis on Safety:As new case volume persists, businesses have been cautious to re-open offices. In an August survey of 15 employers that collectively employ about 2.6 million people, 57% said they had decided to postpone their back-to-work plans because of recent increases case volume, according to the Wall Street Journal. Employers are also developing safety measures to facilitate a smooth re-opening, including redesigned workspaces and temperature checks. We expect additional safety standards to be developed, including staggered employee schedules, space plans to promote social distancing, safe hygiene practices, cleaning protocols, and guidance on using elevators. Technology is a key component of ensuring that both tenants and landlords abide by these emerging safety protocols.
Flexible Work Arrangements:The pandemic catalyzed a massive work-from-home experiment. In many cases, employees actually prefer remote work as it provides flexibility, reduces (or eliminates) commute times and enhances productivity. More than 75 percent indicate they would like to continue to work remotely at least occasionally, while more than half — 54 percent — would like this to be their primary way of working, according to IBM. The forced shift to operating remotely has led to nearly 40 percent of employees indicating they feel strongly that their employer should provide opt-in remote work options when returning to normal operations.
Flexible Space Needs: As offices reopen after COVID-19 shutdowns, we will likely see a mix of new use cases. Some companies will require more office space to further space out employees and reduce potential transmission, while others will move to permanent work-from-home arrangements or a hybrid of home, co-working, and office spaces to minimize commutes and maximize social distance. This will create more demand for flexible office space, including co-working space offered by companies like WeWork and Industrious. According to JLL, 67 percent of corporate real estate decision-makers are increasing workplace mobility programs and are incorporating flex space as a central element of their agile work strategies. JLL “expects 30 percent of all office space globally to be flexible in some form by 2030” (up from about 3% today).
In every industry, technology is an important enabler of not only process efficiency, but also of customer satisfaction and growth, and real estate is no exception (particularly during this pandemic). We’ve already seen technology companies step up to offer useful solutions for landlords and tenants. For instance, companies like Envoy are offering safety-focused tools including employee registration, touchless sign-in, wellness checks and capacity management to employers preparing to re-open their offices. We also expect accelerated adoption of digital solutions related to property and building management, leasing and transaction management. Working on furthering the adoption of technology in real estate? We’d love to talk.
Freddie Mac chief economist Sam Khater said the uptick was due to “economic crosscurrents [that] have kept rates within a ten-basis point range over the last several weeks.” “After the substantial slowdown in growth last fall, home prices stabilized during the winter and began to modestly rise over the last few months,” Khater added. “This … [Read more…]
