FARGO — Holland’s Home and Garden is now planted in Fargo’s downtown.

Sarah and Mike Liljestrand are on track to open their

shop at 420 N. University Drive

on Friday, May 5.

Mike Liljestrand jokes that between Holland’s, the neighboring Dairy Queen, and Chub’s Pub & Package Place across the street, downtown and northside residents can get everything they need in one place.

Hundreds of trees, shrubs and perennials are seen at Holland’s Home and Garden in downtown Fargo on Satuday, April 29, 2023.

“We’ve got this kind of interesting triangle here,” Mike said. “You can come and get a flat of flowers, and a 12-pack of beer across the street, and then get your ice cream cone for the trip home. We’ve got a little of everything to offer here on the block.”

Holland’s used to be at 1201 Center Ave. in Moorhead.

The race to this spring’s opening in the new location – a former Taco Shop – started Dec. 5, “the day we bought it,” Sarah said.

Sweat equity has since made the shop bloom.

On Saturday, April 29, the husband and wife team, their employees, and Sarah’s father, Jeff Olson, were racing to get the greenhouse enclosed, as partly cloudy skies threatened to give way to evening showers.

The parking lot, which had only featured contractor’s trucks at the start of the week, has sprouted a fenced-in yard, a small forest of young trees and pots of hardy perennial plants, an outdoor kids’ play set and slide, and the aforementioned greenhouse.

“We’ve been working hard,” Sarah said.

Plans for opening day have coalesced. The first 30 people who show up Friday will get “swag bags,” with a ribbon-cutting set for 11:30 a.m., Sarah said.

There will also be ice cream treats from Dairy Queen, and other goodies, she promised.

Transplanting the business has been a team effort.

The same day the mortgage papers were signed for the half-acre property, tradesmen began rewiring and re-plumbing the timeworn former restaurant, as well as upgrading the HVAC system.

Meanwhile, the Liljestrands and their employees gutted the interior.

They ripped out the heavy-duty kitchen hood and appliances, and the hurry-up-and-eat banquettes, tables and chairs.

“We had to get the huge cast iron stove out. That was a major undertaking. Our friends from Chub’s Pub came over and helped us,” Mike said. The 700-pound, eight-burner stove was “a monster” to move, and it took a skidsteer to lift it onto a trailer.

There’s fresh paint inside and out, and beautiful tongue and groove boards now grace the ceiling. Cabinets and built-in shelves were installed. A pergola has sprouted up to define the main entry.

Plants were delivered to Holland’s Home and Garden’s new location in the former Taco Shop building at 420 N. University Dr., Fargo, on Tuesday, April 25, 2023.

The former fast-food hangout is now a sharper, homier place to hang out and browse.

One employee, Chani Thorne, created a funky looking wall with chunks of scrap wood – glued and nailed to the wall – a cross between shelving and art installation.

Taylor Pearson painted a black and white mural of flowers, ferns and mushrooms on a wall by the checkout area.

Meanwhile, Mak Schilling tiled, and poured concrete for the floor and a counter.

The former Taco Shop on Fargo’s North University Drive has been turned into the new Holland’s Home and Garden shop, seen here Saturday, April 29, 2023.

“Between the four of us, we literally did everything,” Sarah said. “We did all of this. All of the construction.”

The interior of the store is now an artfully designed mix of houseplants and home goods: artwork, ceramic, glass and metal pots for plants, candles, pillows, throws, wall hangings and hanging baskets, rugs, poster papers and clothing,

“We’re kind of just expanding now what we’ve always done,” Sarah said.

Some of the home decor Items for sale at Holland’s Home and Garden are seen Monday, April 24, 2023. Owners Sarah and Mike Liljestrand converted the former Taco Shop at 420 N. University Drive, Fargo, into their new location.

A lot more people have put down roots in downtown Fargo in recent years, and not many businesses on the western edge of the old city center offer home decor, Sarah said.

The Liljestrands also believe their plants, trees and shrubs will be as popular with northside homeowners as they have with Moorhead customers.

A children’s outdoor play area stands nearly ready at the new Holland’s Home and Garden location at 420 N. University Drive in Fargo on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

The greenhouse will not only be used for plants, but to accommodate a growing schedule of classes.

All of their plants will be in stock on site. Landscaping material will be stored at their rural Clay County homestead, the couple said.

Landscaping with trees and extensive plantings is planned for the property once nicer weather arrives.

While uprooting a business is never a joy, there is a huge plus for Holland’s.

A mural covers the back wall of the new Holland’s Home and Garden location at 420 N. University Drive, Fargo. Owners Sarah and Mike Liljestrand converted the former Taco Shop into their new space. This area used to be the restaurant’s kitchen.

Chris Flynn / The Forum

Traffic on University Drive could drive significant growth for the mom-and-pop business.

“The vehicle count on this road is unreal,” Mike said.

According to 2021 state and local traffic counts, University Drive between 7th Avenue North and Main Avenue averages about 11,000 to 14,000 vehicles a day.

That is half again or more as the average daily vehicle count as the former Holland’s spot on Moorhead’s Center Avenue (somewhere between 7,000 and 8,400 hundred cars daily.)

That’s a lot more exposure, Mike said.

Hollands started in Moorhead about 50 years ago, Sarah said. The Liljestrands have owned it for more than two decades of that run – five years at the original location along Highway 75, then another 16 years along Center Avenue.

Sarah and Mike want this move for Holland’s to be the last while they own it.

Still, they say it’s probably better than coping with construction for the next downtown Moorhead underpass.

The Moorhead High School area underpass took a couple years longer than had been expected, which affected all of the businesses around it, the couple said.

As they looked at the initial plans, the 11th Street railroad underpass project appeared to be twice as big and complex. And they learned their spot on Center Avenue needed to be acquired for the project.

The couple spent three years looking at new locations in the metro area before the Taco Shop spot hit the market.

They agree they’ve landed in a good spot.

“There’s a lot more activity here, with all the restaurants, and now the new Brewhalla and everything, you know,” Sarah said.

Once the business is up and humming along, there will be time to think about setting a date for a grand opening party and other events.

“Food trucks in the summer for sure. Once they come out of hibernation,” Sarah said.

Holland’s will be open 10 a.m. to 6 pm. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 pm. Sunday.

COASTAL COMFORT: For outdoors and in, ‘if you’re looking for something to make your house stand out, you’re going to find it here,’ invited the home and garden store operator. The elements are here, and design is also in mind.(Photos by Jack Reynolds)

Sea Scape Home and Garden in Surf City has outfitted coastal living outdoors and indoors since it opened two years ago; now that concept will expand as the store joins into a collaboration with Tuckerton Lumber Co.

The growth venture is designed to work well for both businesses. Having Sea Scape on board will expand on Tuckerton Lumber’s coastal destination for customers. Meanwhile, Sea Scape’s Michele Tallent is excited that the shop will now offer a broader scope of services, notably that Keli Lynch of Tuckerton Lumber, as an interior designer, will expand the shop’s home interior services.

Located at 1808 Long Beach Blvd., Sea Scape Home and Garden is about creating comfortable coastal living to make memories every day. Quality patio furniture, grills, fire pits, plants, home decor, pottery, baskets, candles and even cozy sweaters are among the shop’s specialties.

The pairing of Tuckerton Lumber Co. resources with Sea Scape’s creative vision is a match made on LBI.

It occurred when Sea Scape had needed more storage space, and Tallent had gone to rent a SurfBox storage unit. That caused a chance meeting with Tuckerton Lumber owner Joseph Lynch, which started a conversation on what the two businesses could each offer the other. Tallent was excited at the prospect of being able to bring in Tuckerton Lumber’s special brand of poly furniture, lines of grills and so much more.

The collaboration comes just in time to wind into the season of LBI shore living.

New outdoor furniture beckons as customers enter the front display grounds at the shop.

“Going into our third summer, we will be bringing back some of our past favorites – teak tables, teak and rope chairs, concrete composite tops for our dining tables, counter-height tables and bars – but we have expanded with some really beautiful new pieces,” said Tallent, listing “beautiful teak and black rope sets, the grapevine set, and our Big Beautiful Black Chair.

“The response has been great so far. We like to stock our furniture, so you can sit on it and try it out.”

Sea Scape is now a source for outdoor kitchens, thanks to the venture with Tuckerton Lumber. And onsite already at Sea Scape are some of the grills that Tuckerton Lumber carries, including Traegar, Napoleon, Weber and Primo brands, Tallent said. Gozny pizza ovens for sale will fire up a fun meal for friends and family.

Portable outside patio heaters and smokeless fire pits from Tuckerton Lumber will warm the atmosphere for relaxation. Solo stoves and smokeless fire pits are among other features made for a nice time. Solar bug torches – Sea Scape Home and Garden has them.

As yet another feature, custom sheds are an inviting escape, or they can give a gardener’s supplies a handy home. “They can be designed to match your house,” Tallent added.

Comfort, as the store’s vision delivers it, extends to clothing that wears well in a shore-side haven. A travel wrap comes with a matching pillow.

“We have a nice clothing line, one size fits all, that has its own cult following,” Tallent described. “Once a person buys one piece, they come back for more and bring a friend. The sweaters look good on everybody.”

The home decor offerings inside the store range from art and beautiful blankets to flatware, tablecloths and “the best-smelling candles,” to picnic baskets. As Tallent encompasses, “If you’re looking for something a little bit different to make your house stand out, you’re going to find it here.”

“With Keli on board, we can do more interior decorating,” noted Tallent. The shop is a source for furniture, rugs, lamps, wall art, pillows, throws, bedding – Sea Scape puts it all together.

Imagine durable teak patio pieces in an oyster-colored finish paired with a distinctive set of vintage beach umbrellas and beach chairs, then adorned with the accessories that finish setting the scene.

Added Tallent, “We have a casual approach to design. It doesn’t all have to be new furniture; think of a new table mixed with different old chairs. We love to find new uses for old furniture.”

Splash on a new coat of paint; remove doors from cabinets to reveal new possibilities; accent with new hardware.

Tallent’s passion for design is often inspired by the seashore as she incorporates natural elements. “I love working with different grasses, and we sell blooming hydrangeas, blooming hanging plants, other outdoor plants, and interior houseplants.”

Spaces can be created to be peaceful, simple, spa-like, or very busy with lots of greens, flowers and vines. The philosophy is to create a space outside that will be as comfortable as the inside, or an extension of the inside – a place to unwind to enjoy the beach air.

Some of Keli Lynch and Tallent’s favorite spaces are covered porches. Tallent set a possible scene one recent spring day as she was getting the shop ready for a busy week. Bring out an old cabinet … a fresh coat of paint … some pillows and throws for some comfy furniture … the use of a rug to define the space … a plug-in small fireplace … finish off with a nice-scented candle. Adorn with plants and hanging baskets, like the big hanging ferns and ficus lyrata, better known as fiddle leaf.

The outside of the home becomes outdoor living, with coastal style. The seaside property is a seascape. It’s going to be a very nice season with Sea Scape Home and Garden. The store phone number is 609-494-5454.

personalized gift, we go to Etsy. When we’re looking for a hand-crafted kitchen item to accentuate our countertops, we go to Etsy. And, when we renovate our homes — be it furniture or decor — we (you guessed it) go to Etsy.

The direct-to-consumer marketplace is unmatched when it comes to bringing artisans, DIY-ers and skilled entrepreneurs to life to showcase their designs to life. Now, the e-commerce company has become a leader in home and design, so much so that it recently launched its 2023 Decor Trends Guide for shoppers worldwide to gain inspiration on what to add to their home’s interior next.

“In an age of social media, shoppers are increasingly looking to stand out from the crowd, and many are turning to handmade and vintage pieces that are totally unique and no one else has,” Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy trend expert, exclusively told the New York Post. “We’re also seeing shoppers buying in line with their values more than ever, whether that means shopping sustainably or supporting small businesses, and Etsy is home to millions of items made by real people around the world.”

Ahead, find our full exclusive interview with Etsy, along with an overview of each decor trend. More, we outlined some of our favorite pieces to grab from top Etsy shops that seamlessly fit the bill for each trend.

“Etsy is also one of the top and most popular platforms for buying vintage items — in fact, someone searches for a vintage item on Etsy every two seconds,” Johnson points out. “Shoppers are particularly loving vintage lamps, furniture, and wedding items — like dresses and engagement rings — as many turn to secondhand styles as a way to own something truly unique while also shopping sustainably.”

While you’re shopping, be sure to check out our guides to the best Amazon home products and interior designer-backed 2023 design trends for even more inspiration.

1. Dark Woods

JessHomeDecor on Etsy

According to the 2023 Decor Trends Guide, there has been a 337% increase in searches for walnut desks and accessories and a 28% increase in searches for brown seating or furniture. This isn’t to say that light rustic beige is ‘so long, farewell,’though, even though Etsy has been seeing a 14% decrease in searches for raw or light wood and a 29% decrease in searches for beige decor.

“Darker woods create a sense of warmth and coziness in a space, while also providing a touch of character and sophistication,” Johnson says. Another reason why to love darker woods? They’re timeless and versatile.

“Take a classic vintage walnut credenza, for example, which can effortlessly be styled with anything from playful disco ball decor to a modern accent rug to an old world, Parisian-inspired mantel,” she offers.

“This emerging ocean-inspired look is a much-welcomed extension of some of our favorite existing trends – like last summer’s crustaceancore and coastal grandmother – but with a more whimsical and playful twist,” Johnson explains. “In addition to shoppers looking to add a touch of under-the-sea-inspired glam to their spaces, many are also likely leaning into the nostalgic feelings that this trend evokes ahead of a soon-to-be-released upcoming sea-themed movie.”

Tapping into ancient China-inspired decor, shoppers worldwide are embracing paper lighting in a multitude of sizes and styles. Because of its unique nature of diffusing light, its soft and warm moody glow appeals to a variety of aesthetics.

“Nothing creates a cozy atmosphere quite like the perfect lamp — and these days our favorite shades are taking a leaf right from a time-honored style that dates back to ancient China: paper lighting,” Johnson reveals. “Opt for a pastel blue pendant [starting at $174] or a mushroom-shaped tabletop lamp [$65] for a soft and warm glow that creates an inviting atmosphere.”

According to the 2023 Decor Trends Guide, there has been an 85% increase in searches on Etsy for hanging paper lanterns, a 61% increase in searches on Etsy for rice paper lighting and a 24% increase in searches on Etsy for paper floor lamps.

Long live the days when jewelry was for accessorizing your outfit. Now, jewelry is also making a statement for the home! Namely, these decorative accents and little luxuries adorn rooms with grandeur and vast appeal — accessorizing in a unique way.

“Pepper your space with sun-catchers that joyfully reflect light and crystal-studded knobs that take your cabinets from ordinary to boho-chic in the blink of an eye — and don’t forget to dress up your houseplants with a gemstone-adorned plant stake while you’re at it,” Johnson recommends. “These finishing touches add a dose of glamor and can even be swapped out seasonally.”

In the last three months, Etsy has seen a 139% increase in searches for gemstone decor, a 50% increase in searches for sun-catcher prisms, a 46% increase in searches for unique wall hooks and a 13% increase in searches for brass kitchen hardware.

“Vintage patterns are on the rise, showing up in new and unfamiliar places,” Johnson says. “Reminiscent of old country charm, traditional patterns like toile, chintz, and vintage floral prints are popping up everywhere from textiles to teacups, introducing a touch of eclectic nostalgia straight out of our regency romance dreams.”

Etsy has seen a whopping 1,041% increase in searches for embroidered botanical items, while searches for vintage wallpaper are up 162%, searches for floral home decor are up 118% and searches for toile art are up 32%.

One of America’s crown jewels, Yosemite National Park has been leaving visitors awestruck since it became a national park in 1890.

The monoliths of Half Dome and El Capitan, the ancient sequoias of Mariposa Grove, and North America’s tallest waterfall, Yosemite Falls, are just a few of this vast California park’s emblematic attractions that make it one of the country’s best national parks. What makes Yosemite so appealing (and crowded) is that its signature features are easy to access and available pretty much year-round.

Not surprisingly, with close to 3.5 million visitors per year, lodging options within the park’s boundaries come at a premium. Within easy reach of the park, there are several amenity-rich wilderness lodges, quaint bed-and-breakfasts and lavish boutique hotels that cater to multigenerational families, couples looking to disconnect, and adventure-seeking solo travelers.

From budget-friendly in-park lodges to a flashy European-style retreat, here are some of TPG’s favorite places to stay in and around Yosemite National Park.

Ahwahnee Hotel

Yosemite National Park, California, USA

Why stay here: A cherished national landmark, the Ahwahnee is a paradigm of “parkitecture” design. A wide selection of classically appointed rooms, suites and cottages can accommodate groups, couples and solo travelers — and paying up can even get you a view of Half Dome.

Best way to book: The Ahwahnee is operated by Xanterra Parks & Resorts. Book directly (and well in advance) for the best prices.

A cherished national landmark, The Ahwahnee has been the hotel of choice for celebrities, heads of state and royalty visiting Yosemite for generations.

Located on the southern fringes of Yosemite Valley, the location couldn’t be better, and even just a stroll across the grounds reveals the park’s hallowed attractions: Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and Glacier Point.

Constructed in 1929 of sugar pine logs and rough-cut granite, The Ahwahnee is a paradigm of National Park Service-rustic, or “parkitecture.” Magnificent public spaces with beamed ceilings and colossal stone fireplaces are filled with Native American artworks, Arts and Crafts furnishings and art deco influences.

While the 121 standard rooms don’t have quite the same wow factor, they are clean and spacious with classical detailing, rustic wood furnishings and spectacular views. Suites and junior suites on the upper floors have private fireplaces and/or balconies, and the presidential suite where President John F. Kennedy stayed has a king bedroom, living area and parlor with a sleeper sofa and a large balcony with views of Glacier Point.

What you are really spending up for here, though, is the stately ambiance, unbeatable location and time-honored rituals. The Ahwahnee Dining Room oozes history and charm, with emblematic stonework, iron chandeliers, Native American design motifs and floor-to-ceiling windows framing spectacular views of the valley. Dress the part (that’s required; no T-shirts or flip-flops) and dine on Yosemite’s finest cuisine. Menu favorites include Acadian spiced tiger prawns with smoked cheddar polenta, roasted tomatoes and seasonal herbs ($25), and New Zealand lamb chops with black garlic miso sauce, carrot-yuzu puree, arugula and pickled cucumber ribbons ($27).

As you’d expect of a Relais & Chateaux property, the on-site restaurant is a destination unto itself. The Elderberry House has garnered a loyal following for over 30 years, serving three- and six-course menus ($95/$155) that incorporate seasonal produce from local farms — an amuse-bouche of sea urchin and sweet pea followed by ahi tuna with sorrel, for example, and then an entree of local steelhead trout with lemon thyme nage and snap peas.

The cozy, stone-walled Cellar bar is a great place to start the evening with a cocktail (perhaps an Elderflower Sour with gin, lemon juice, elderflower syrup and egg white, $17).

At the Spa du Sureau, you can book a range of European-inspired treatments, facials and massages or take a dip in the heated outdoor swimming pool.

A major draw of this property is the complimentary perks, including a copious daily breakfast and such welcome beverages and treats as a bottle of wine and a house-baked Gugelhupf cake. There’s also nightly turndown service and daily housekeeping (not always a given these days).

Rates at Chateau du Sureau start at $395 per night.

Yosemite Valley Lodge

Yosemite National Park, California, USA

SAM ISAAC/YOSEMITE VALLEY LODGE/FACEBOOK

Best for: A short walk from Yosemite Falls, this cozy lodge is a comfortable base for families that value location, convenience and a budget-friendly price tag.

Why stay here: This property offers a variety of accommodations, several dining options and a seasonal outdoor pool — not to mention spectacular surrounding natural beauty.

Best way to book: Yosemite Valley Lodge is operated by Xanterra Parks & Resorts, Inc. Book direct (and well in advance) for the best prices.

This popular, no-frills NPS lodge frequently books up 12 months in advance, largely due to its prime location — it’s the closest property to Yosemite Falls and many of the park’s most popular hiking trails start near the lodge. It’s also considerably cheaper than nearby Ahwahnee, making it a good budget option at a time when lodging prices in and around U.S. national parks have soared.

For nature-loving families and couples that value location over luxurious amenities, it ticks a lot of boxes. There are 245 simple hotel rooms (many recently updated) across three room categories — Traditional Rooms, Bunk Rooms and Family King Rooms. All share a homely aesthetic and provide a clean and functional place to bed down at the center of the action. There is no air conditioning, Wi-Fi or TVs in any room categories.

The Mountain Room restaurant serves sustainably sourced modern American cuisine — steak and seafood, as well as vegetarian and vegan options — along with iconic views of Yosemite Falls. At the canteen-style Base Camp Eatery, you can get your caffeine fix, fuel up for the day on casual fare and head out with some packable grab-and-go items.

There is also a seasonal swimming pool on the grounds, and bike rentals to explore the area — the lodge is located just a 5-minute bike ride, or 10-to-15-minute walk, from Yosemite Village’s shopping, dining and visitors center.

Rates at Yosemite Valley Lodge start at $329 per night.

Wawona Hotel

TONY SECKER/WAWONA HOTEL/FACEBOOK

Best for: Budget-conscious travelers looking to disconnect and explore in and around Yosemite National Park, a 40-minute drive away.

Why stay here: Victorian-era charm, a tranquil location, an outdoor pool and comfortable rooms that are far from generic.

Best way to book: Wawona Hotel is operated by Xanterra Parks & Resorts. Book directly for the best prices as well as special offers and packages.

Dating to 1856, the Victorian-style Wawona Hotel is located within Yosemite National Park’s more secluded recesses, some 45 minutes from the valley floor. Open during the winter season (December through March), it’s popular with snow-sports enthusiasts visiting nearby Badger Pass, as well as nature lovers keen to view the famed sequoias of Mariposa Grove — namely the 1,800-year-old Grizzly Giant and the California Tunnel Tree.

There are 50 standard rooms with en suite bathrooms and 54 budget-friendly rooms with shared bathrooms. While they are spare and compact and, some may say, fusty in design (floral bedding, heavy carpeting and simple furniture), with rates from $157 per night, you won’t find anywhere cheaper (apart from camping) within the park. It’s certainly a hot ticket, with rooms selling out 6 to 12 months in advance.

For active types, there’s an array of adventures close by: hiking trails, mountain biking, golf and horseback riding, as well as a seasonal outdoor pool on the property. Public spaces are a joy to return home to, with a light-filled sunroom, cozy dining room filled with period detailing, wide verandas and patios overlooking lovely gardens, and daily rituals such as live classical music and cocktails in the cozy lounge, fireside gatherings and summertime barbecues.

Rates at the Wawona Hotel start at $157 per night.

Apache is functioning normally

It’s our first Idea to Steal of the new year! While I’m actually not big on design trends as I think virtually anything can go when it comes to how you decorate – I have seen a particular style popping up recently: channel tufting. And the more I see, the more I like.

I was first reminded of the style in this post, but then realized channel tufting is popping up everywhere I turn. While the look can easily take on a vintage 70’s vibe, I’m loving examples of a more contemporary style. For example, I’m obsessed with that neutral chair above – it feel absolutely timeless. I want to track one down for our house. That chair is proof positive that if you find the right application, channel tufting is a great way to get a little additional personality into any room. Here are a few more examples:

In a bedroom, channel tufting adds texture and a great geometric pattern. When you use a refined, structured hand and pair the tufted piece with modern touches (do I spy a lindsey adelman sconce?!) the style is anything but dated.

Even throwback styles can feel fresh. When applied in brushed velvet with a 70’a hue, channel tufting takes on that classic vintage look. But when you pair that with of-the-moment touches like Moroccan rugs, midcentury furniture and killer lighting channel tufting still feels of the moment. And it’s actually an if-the-moment look you can even create yourself. The headboard and matching bed above are in fact a DIY you can recreate at home!

So what say you? Are you into this vintage inspired look? Do you think it a has a place in 2017?
