Do you have unwanted gift cards? Here are 7 ways to sell gift cards online instantly for cash and make extra money.
Approximately $3 billion in gift cards go unused in the U.S. every year. If you’re one of those people who have gift cards and don’t plan to use them, consider selling the gift card for cash.
There are many reasons gift cards go unused, including you don’t shop at the retailer, you need money to pay the bills, or you simply rather have cash instead of a gift card. This can be an easy way to get free money now.
The most popular gift cards people buy come from retailers like Target, Starbucks, Amazon, Best Buy, Visa, and Walmart. You’ll generally receive about 90% of the total gift card amount if you decide to sell the gift card, so keep that in mind.
Today, I’m going over the best places to sell gift cards.
Raise is a gift card site that lets you buy or sell used gift cards.
To sell a gift card on Raise, you need to:
Payout options: pay by check, PayPal, or ACH direct deposit. Anytime you sell a used gift card on Raise, Raise takes a 15% cut from the selling price.
CardCash is a platform that buys used gift cards.
To sell your gift card to CardCash, do the following:
For example, I pretended I had a Target gift card to sell with a $50 balance. CardCash offered me $39.50 cash or $40.09 for a prepaid Mastercard. Seeing their instant offer with their quote tool was quick and easy!
Then I have the option to get paid either by mailed check, ACH direct deposit, or PayPal.
CardSell is an app that helps you trade unwanted gift cards for cash. The mobile app works for both iOS and Android users.
To get started, download the app and enter your gift card number and PIN. CardSell will verify your card and check the balance. Once verified, CardSell will pay you within 48 hours via PayPal.
ClipKard is another popular website that buys used gift cards. The process is similar to other gift card websites.
To get started here’s what to do:
You can also earn rewards on ClipKard for doing things like buying and selling gift cards. Reward points can be used to give you discounts on future purchases on the website.
Gameflip is a website for gamers that helps you sell unused gift cards from places like Steam, PSN, Xbox, iTunes, Google Play, and more.
To sell a gift card on Gameflip, you need to create an account and click “Start Selling”. This is where you can list your gift card in the marketplace. Once someone buys your gift card, you’ll be notified.
When the transaction goes through, the sale proceeds are immediately deposited into your Wallet. You can then withdraw the cash into your bank account, Skrill, Bitcoin, or crypto account, and more.

GiftCash is a platform that buys gift cards. Selling a gift card on GiftCash is easy.
All you have to do is enter the brand’s name of the gift card into GiftCash, enter the gift card balance, and GiftCash will tell you the total payout offer instantly.
Then, you can accept payment from options like ACH direct deposit or Cryptocurrency.
If you rather go in person to sell your used gift card, find a local Check Into Cash store near you. There are over 300 locations in the U.S., which makes it easy to get cash immediately for your gift cards.
Bring any gift cards you haven’t used into your local Check Into Cash store and they will exchange the gift cards for cash.
Below are answers to common questions about how to sell gift cards.
People buy used gift cards because it’s a way to save money. For example, someone can buy a gift card that has a $50 balance on it and only pays $40 for the gift card (depending on the site they are buying it from). This allows people to get the same value of goods or services at a discounted rate.
The best site to sell gift cards depends on what kind of gift card you’re selling. If you’re selling a gift card to a place like Target or Starbucks, Raise and CardCash are great spots to sell gift cards. They make the process easy and convenient to sell unused gift cards and get the most money for your gift card.
If you’re selling a gaming-related gift card, Gameflip is the best website to sell your used gift card.

Gift Card Granny no longer buys gift cards from people. The website is a gift card marketplace and cash back website. For example, you can build and customize a gift card and send it to people, but you can’t buy discounted cards.
Gift Card Granny does have a “discounted” gift card section, but it is really just a cash back section that gives you a bonus for getting a certain gift card. For example, if I buy a Subway gift card, I may be able to get $2.50 in cash back, but I have to buy a $250 gift card to even receive that amount.
You can sell gift cards online instantly and the best website to get paid immediately for your gift cards is CardCash. CardCash pays up to 92% of the gift card value and pays out within 1-2 days of gift card approval. You may need to send in the gift card to CardCash, but typically the gift card can be transferred by entering the gift card number and pin to the website.
Raise and CardCash buy gift cards and both payout via PayPal.
Check Into Cash is a brick-and-mortar with over 300 locations. To find a store near you, go to their website and find a local store. Bring in your gift card and get a free quote. Make sure to bring your government-issued ID so they can verify your identity and process payment. If your gift card is accepted, you’ll walk out with cash immediately and have no waiting period, unlike online gift card marketplaces.
You can also sell your gift cards locally, such as on Facebook Marketplace.
Another great option for selling gift cards is via eBay. You can list all kinds of gift cards on the platform and even send the gift card info to the buyer via messenger, so there’s no need to ship anything. eBay does take a portion of the sale so you also need to keep that in mind.
If you don’t want to go through the process of selling your gift card, you have several other options. You can regift the gift card or donate the gift card to a place in need like an animal shelter or local charity. Some retailers might even take gift card returns as long as the gift card isn’t used. However, you’ll need the original receipt to do that.
The best places to sell your gift cards are Raise, CardCash, CardSell, ClipKard, GameFlip, GiftCash, and Check Into Cash. To get the most money for your gift card, check around multiple sites and get quotes for how much you can receive.
These gift card exchange sites buy gift cards because they resell them. People then buy these used gift cards because they are sold at a discount. For example, you may be able to buy a $100 gift card but only actually pay $90 for it.
Remember, you can sell both digital and physical gift cards! If you have a physical gift card, you may have to mail it in.
Some of the gift card exchange sites do have a minimum balance (such as $10) as well as a maximum value (such as $2,000) that they will accept.
Selling gift cards is easy and a great way to make extra cash. I recommend gathering the different unused gift cards you have lying around and checking the gift card balance to see how much extra money you can make.
Did you know that you can sell your old gift cards that you don’t want?

Pantone’s “Peach Fuzz” should absolutely be on your mood board this year.
The Pantone Color of the Year is Peach Fuzz, a cheery color ready to brighten up your home’s color palette. It’s a vibrant pastel that works wonderfully as a decorative pop of color.

Try adding deeper earth tones to achieve a moodier vibe around your home.
Brown is the new go-to shade of neutral. While black, navy, and gray usually get all the attention when it comes to neutrals, 2024 is the year of brown. Not only is it a perfect compliment to the vibrancy of peach, but it’s a gorgeous way to add depth and warmth.
Bedding is an easy way to incorporate brown into your home. Refresh your bedroom with a set of cozy linen sheets in a deep cocoa color like these from BedThreads. Or, try brown curtains for a moody display. These curtains from CB2 are a rich brown that will make your home feel luxurious.

Make waves with curvy furniture that is both unconventional and distinctive.
This year, rather than going for sharp, angular pieces of mid-century modern furniture, try rounded curves. This softer approach, especially through furniture, can make a statement.
Have fun with a new coffee table that swaps hard edges for smooth curves. This cloud-like coffee table is unique and cultivates a dreamy living room vibe.
Or if you’re in the mood for a new couch, try this low-profile curved sectional from West Elm.

In 2024, we’re using less wood and more cardboard.
Sustainability continues to be an important pillar of this year’s home design forecast, with cardboard furniture trending as one of the greenest ways to furnish your home.
You’d never think that cardboard could be sturdy enough to hold your mattress, but it is! Cardboard is one of the most sustainable fibers as it’s made from recycled materials rather than newly harvested ones—and it can be surprisingly sophisticated.
Cardboard furniture may be rising in popularity, but it’s been around for almost 50 years. The Wiggle Stool by Frank Gehry is crafted from perforated cardboard and makes a contemporary and stylish seat.
Yona makes cardboard bed frames that are supremely sturdy, holding over 7,000 pounds. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money but want the cute platform bed style, a cardboard frame is worth a look.

Faux brick walls are a thing of the past—try faux concrete instead.
Industrial style stands the test of time, but it’s getting a new look in 2024. Rather than steel, exposed brick and natural wood, it’s the year of concrete. This rough, natural material adds some nice texture to your home. It looks best in bathrooms and kitchen backsplashes.
However, if you can’t build a concrete wall in your home, you can still get the look with wallpaper. This Brewster wallpaper looks like concrete, so you can create a statement wall masterpiece.

May your next home DIY project be filled with new tiles and a satisfying end result.
When it comes to tiling, this is the year to go bold. While crisp white tile is a popular choice for bathrooms and kitchens, it’s a little dated. In 2024, go for patterned tiles. We love floral patterned tile that can deck your walls and floors.
If you don’t want to stray too far from white tiles, this mosaic tile comes in a simple black and white floral motif.

After years of embracing colorful lights inside your home with sunset lamps and smart bulbs, it’s time to embrace your home’s natural light.

Capital One Shopping is one of the best coupon apps. This is a browser extension that finds coupon codes for you when you shop online.
This is one of the best automatic savings apps because you don’t have to do anything extra. The Capital One Shopping app does the work for you by running through available coupon codes as you check out, and then it automatically applies the best digital coupons for you and your purchase.
It’s free to use Capital One Shopping, and it is a browser extension that works with all major browsers.
You simply just shop as you normally do, and the Capital One Shopping app works in the background. I have it installed on my laptop; it works great and I am always able to find the best deals with no extra time spent on my end.
You can sign up for Capital One Shopping here.
Below is my Capital One Shopping Review.
Capital One Shopping is your go-to tool for smart and easy online shopping.
Formally known as Wikibuy, this tool is a browser extension and a mobile app. You can add it to browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari. For when you’re shopping from your phone, the Capital One Shopping app is available for iOS and Android devices, so that you can make sure you’re saving money no matter where you are.
Here’s how it fits into your shopping routine: as you shop online, the extension automatically looks for lower prices and applicable coupon codes. If you’re thinking about buying a particular item, Capital One Shopping will let you know if it finds the same item at a better price elsewhere.
Capital One Shopping is even more rewarding too because you earn points for your purchases. These points can be redeemed for gift cards at many different retailers. So, you save money and get rewarded – it’s a win-win!
Capital One Shopping is designed to be easy for everyone, whether you’re good with technology or not. All you have to do is install it, shop, and you’ll save money. It’s that easy!
To start saving money with Capital One Shopping, you just need to download the browser extension or mobile app.
For your desktop, visit the Capital One Shopping website and click on the option to add the extension to your browser. If you’re on a smartphone, download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store by searching “Capital One Shopping.”
You can download Capital One Shopping here.
Capital One Shopping has several different tools to make sure that you save the most money when shopping online. These tools include:
While shopping online, Capital One Shopping’s browser extension can automatically apply coupon codes at checkout.
This means you don’t have to look around the internet for coupons, as the tool seamlessly searches for and applies the best available codes for your purchases.
This is my favorite thing about Capital One Shopping. I love that I don’t have to look on a bunch of websites to find coupon codes. Instead, the Capital One Shopping browser extension does everything for me and helps me save money. This way, I don’t forget to enter coupon codes either, as it automatically does it for me!
According to my Capital One Shopping dashboard, this tool has saved me $1,047.26 since I started using it over 32 shopping transactions!
As you shop with participating retailers, you can earn rewards points in your Capital One Shopping account.
You can then redeem these points for gift cards at different stores, giving you sort of like cash back on purchases you would be making anyway.
You simply just go to the Rewards & Savings tab when you are logged in on Capital One Shopping to see how much money you have available in shopping rewards. You can then exchange this for a gift card to places such as Adidas, American Eagle, Hotels.com, Kohl’s, Chewy, and so much more.
I recently redeemed my points for a $50 gift card to T.J.Maxx – couldn’t have been easier, as you don’t have to do anything extra.
Capital One Shopping’s price comparison tool helps shoppers find lower prices across different online stores.
Before you buy an item, this feature shows you where it may be available for less, sometimes including the costs of tax and shipping to give you a good idea of how much money you can save overall.
I really like this feature as sometimes the price can vary by a lot between different stores and even on Amazon. In fact, I was recently looking at furniture online, and the price difference from one store and another was nearly $500.
Note: This part of the program just ended. Here’s what they have said: “What happened to Price Protection? Capital One Shopping is no longer offering our Active Savings Monitoring/Price Protection product. We have updated our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to reflect this change. We will still be offering many other opportunities for you to save with Capital One Shopping via our browser extension and emails.”
If you purchase an item and the price drops shortly after, Capital One Shopping tracks and alerts you to the price drops. It can help you request a refund for the difference without needing to monitor prices after you’ve made your purchase manually.
This is a nice feature, as it can save you a lot of money. I know I can’t be the only one who gets a little annoyed when I notice that something has dropped a lot in price right after I buy it. This feature can help you keep track of price drops so that you can maybe try to ask for a refund for the difference in price of an item.
For example, if you buy something for $50, but then the next week it drops to $25, you may be able to ask the online store for a refund of $25.
Another great feature that Capital One Shopping offers is a watchlist.
You can add items to your Capital One Shopping watchlist and receive notifications if prices drop. It helps you be smart about when to buy things. When there’s a sale, it lets you know right away, so you can get the best deals.
To keep an eye on specific products, add them to your watchlist. When you view an item online that you’re interested in, click the Capital One Shopping icon or button to add it. You’ll get notifications, such as email alerts, if there’s a price drop or if a coupon code becomes available for that item.
This feature acts as a centralized search engine, comparing prices of a product across many different online stores. You can find where your desired item is selling for the least amount of money with minimum effort.
For example – if you are interested in a blender, you can simply just go straight to Capital One Shopping’s website and type in “blender” in their search bar.
It will then list out all of the deals and prices on blenders that the tool knows about. This way, you can just search for the best price on a blender on one site, instead of having to go to multiple sites to find the best deal.
When planning travel, Capital One Shopping helps you find the lowest rates on hotels. Just like with products, it compares prices across a number of travel sites to help make sure that you’re getting a good deal on your accommodations.
You can find this feature when you are logged in on their website and heading to the Hotels tab. Then, just enter the location of where you want to travel to, the dates, and the amount of people you are traveling with.
Capital One Shopping has a unique way for you to earn rewards that you can convert to gift cards. By using this service, your regular shopping activities can lead to even more easy savings.
With Capital One Shopping, earning gift cards is tied to the use of shopping credits. When you shop online with Capital One Shopping tools, you can earn shopping credits (also known as points or rewards) on your purchases.
Here’s how you can earn points with Capital One Shopping:
Redeeming your Capital One Shopping credits for gift cards is pretty easy. Once you’ve earned enough credits, you can exchange them for gift cards at places like Macy’s, Nike, Gap, DoorDash, T.J.Maxx, Lowe’s, and more.
To get a free gift card with Capital One Shopping:
I honestly didn’t even know that this was a feature of Capital One Shopping until recently. I was mainly just using this site for the promo code search feature (because it is soooo nice and easy to use!) for my online purchases. One day, I logged in and realized that I had enough points for a free gift card. It’s like a nice little bonus!
When you’re looking for the best deals online, you have several options other than Capital One Shopping. Each alternative has unique features that might fit your shopping habits differently.
Below, you can see how Capital One Shopping stacks up against other popular sites – Honey, Rakuten, and Fetch.
Capital One Shopping and Honey (also known as PayPal Honey) are very similar.
Honey also has a web browser extension that automatically finds and applies coupon codes at checkout. Honey does not compare prices between different online stores, which is the main difference between the two apps.
You can sign up for PayPal Honey here.

Rakuten, formerly known as Ebates, is a popular cash back and shopping rewards program. It differs from Capital One Shopping mainly in its cash back model. Rakuten gives you a percentage of cash back on your purchases, depending on the store. Your earnings with Rakuten are distributed quarterly, whereas Capital One Shopping provides reward points that can be redeemed for gift cards.
All you do is click on a store that you want to shop through (they have tons of stores such as Walmart, Target, Old Navy, etc.) and shop just like how you normally would shop online.
When you sign up for Rakuten through my referral link, you can get a free $10 cash sign-up bonus.
Fetch Rewards is a phone app that rewards you for grocery shopping (yes, just the normal grocery shopping that you do all the time!). With Fetch, you earn points by uploading shopping receipts, which can be exchanged for gift cards.
Capital One Shopping is more versatile since it works across different online retailers and automatically applies savings at checkout, not just on groceries.
But, Fetch is great for in-person shopping. If you’re looking for the best money-saving app for groceries, I’ve been using Fetch Rewards the last few months, and it is so easy to save on groceries and other daily purchases! All you have to do is take a picture of your receipt with your cell phone, and you can easily earn points. I scan any and all receipts into my Fetch Rewards app and can easily earn rewards. You can sign up for Fetch Rewards here.

Knowing the pros and cons about the different sites can help you pick the right one. Capital One Shopping is great for finding coupon codes that actually work, comparing prices, and earning rewards that turn into gift cards. But maybe you like Rakuten for simple cash back, Honey for instant coupons, or Fetch for rewards on groceries.
Think about what matters most to you – getting discounts right away, having rewards, or sticking to a specific loyalty program. This way, you can choose the shopping rewards that suit you best.
Below are answers to common questions about Capital One Shopping.
Yes, Capital One Shopping is both safe and legitimate. It’s a browser extension and app provided by a reputable financial services company (Capital One), endorsed by many different trusted websites, and has great user reviews. I personally have Capital One Shopping downloaded on my laptop and it has saved me a ton of money.
Capital One Shopping is free to use, with no hidden fees. You don’t need to have a Capital One account or pay with a Capital One credit card to use this service. It’s a completely separate and free service.
The time it takes to receive cash back from Capital One Shopping can vary. Once you’ve earned enough rewards, processing for cash back typically takes a few days to a few weeks.
I get it – this app has a ton of really nice features that can save you a lot of money. So, what’s the catch? The Capital One Shopping extension earns money through affiliate marketing. When you buy something through the extension, the store pays Capital One Shopping a commission.
It’s hard to definitively say which is better, Capital One Shopping or Honey, as both offer similar features. Your choice might depend on which platform provides better deals or rewards for the stores you shop at.
No, a Capital One account isn’t necessary to use the Capital One Shopping browser extension. The service is available to anyone looking to save money online.

What is a prepaid debit card? These cards are similar to standard debit cards, with a few exceptions. Just like standard debit cards, you can use prepaid cards to make in-person purchases at most locations that take Visa or Mastercard. In many cases, you can even use these cards to make online purchases.
Instead of depositing money into an account at your local bank, you load money directly onto a prepaid debit card. Some cards also let you set up a direct deposit so you can have the funds from your paycheck directly loaded onto your card.
You can only spend up to the amount of money you have on your card. This may help prevent hefty overdraft fees that some banks and credit unions charge. However, most prepaid debit cards charge other fees, such as monthly maintenance and transaction fees.
There are many reasons you might want to consider purchasing a prepaid debit card. For starters, prepaid cards are often more convenient and safer than carrying cash around. These cards can be a good option for those having trouble getting a standard bank account or facing excessive overdraft fees.
Because prepaid debit cards only allow you to spend the value on your card, they can help you curb your spending and gain better control of your finances. It’s important to note that prepaid debit cards don’t help build your credit. They also don’t accrue interest no matter what your balance is.
Prepaid debit cards are fairly easy to obtain. Many major retailers, such as Walmart and Target, sell these cards. Prepaid cards are also available through some banks and credit card companies. You may be required to provide proof of identification and incur a one-time activation fee.
When choosing a prepaid debit card, be sure to compare your options. Most prepaid cards charge a variety of fees, such as monthly maintenance and transaction fees. Be sure you understand all the costs involved when choosing the right prepaid debit card.
You also want to compare added features. For instance, if you want a prepaid card that allows you to have your paycheck directly deposited onto your card, make sure it offers this feature before purchasing it. Other features you may want to consider are the ability to link your bank account to your debit card so you can transfer money quickly or the ability to give a family member access to your account.
Using a prepaid debit card is pretty simple. Once you purchase the card, follow the activation steps before using it—keep in mind that you may incur a one-time activation fee. If you didn’t load money at the time of purchase, you must do so before using it.
Most prepaid cards allow you to add money by phone, online, or in person at the location you purchased the card. Depending on the type of prepaid card you purchase, you may also be able to set up a direct deposit to have your payroll check load directly on your card.
Once you have money on your card, you can make purchases at most locations that accept Visa or Mastercard, such as retail stores, restaurants, and grocery stores. You can also use ATMs to withdraw cash.
Additionally, you can use your card to pay bills or shop online. However, some cards require you to register your card before making online purchases. To register your card, you just need to follow the instructions that came with it.
Keep in mind that your purchases can’t exceed the balance on your card. For instance, if you try to purchase an item for $300 but only have $275 on your card, the transaction will be denied. The good news is that you won’t face any overdraft fees, and you can’t spend more money than you have available.
Before you purchase a prepaid debit card, it’s important to consider the advantages and disadvantages of using this card.
Reloadable prepaid debit cards have several great benefits, including:
These cards also have numerous disadvantages that you should be cautious of, including:
Before purchasing a prepaid debit card, it’s important to understand its fees and limitations. Be sure to read the fine print so you understand exactly what fees you might incur while using the card. Additionally, read through the policies to see if the card includes any deposit, withdrawal, or balance limitations that may hinder your ability to use and save funds.
Because prepaid debit cards don’t help you build credit, you may want to consider applying for a credit card instead. Start by checking your Free Credit Score to see if you might qualify for a credit-building credit card.
If your credit score is too low to qualify for a credit card, a prepaid debit card may be a good solution while you work on rebuilding your credit. Credit.com’s Extra Credit® subscription has tools that can help you take steps to build your credit and track your success.

There are plenty of trends that used to be mostly popular among the low-middle income people that changed when they became popular with rich people. Whether it is a band, a clothing style, or a hobby, nothing remains the same once wealth and status get involved. But what are some of the things that poor people loved before they were spoiled by the wealthy? Here, we look at 20 things that once brought joy to those without much money—until their newfound popularity caused them to be re-crafted as symbols of luxury and extravagance.
One user shared, “Living in warehouses in the industrial, rundown side of town.”
Another user agreed and commented, “Yes! They tore down all the real lofts to build condos they call lofts.”
“Etsy,” posted one user.
Another user commented, “There are SO many accounts for cheap stuff from China that you could get on many other websites as well. No, I come to Etsy for homemade stuff and to support artistic individuals.”
One user added, “Yep, I remember trying to avoid the temptation of Shein by almost buying some unique pearl belly dance waist chains from there for 20 dollars. Dear reader, they were from Shein, without the tags and with a hefty 200% price increase. Thank God for the reviewer who exposed them.”
One Redditor unfolded the riches’ hack and posted, “Food banks. My local food bank put out a news article basically saying that rich people need to stop using the food bank as a ‘life hack’ to lower their grocery bills.”
One user grasped and commented, “OMG. That’s so evil. Some people really have no conscience.”
One Redditor shared, “Living in arty neighborhoods.”
Another user replied,” This is what I was looking for. Creative poor people have been investing in poor neighbourhoods forever. They use their talent to make it an excellent place they enjoy living in. The rich say, ‘Hey, I want to be cool, let’s buy this.’ And then they price the poor out of the haven they created and turn it into a stale, crowded, overpriced place. TL;DR—Gentrification”
“Champion brand clothes. I had a lot when I was a kid because it was the cheapest possible, and now all that s- is considered ‘vintage,’” posted one user.
Another responded, “Reminds me of Fila and Puma.”
An online Redditor commented, “Ebay. It used to be so useful to get all kinds of cheap or unique things. Then more and more big commercial sellers joined the club, and eventually, eBay itself forgot about what and who made their platform a success in the first place.”
“I’ve had my eBay account since ’98 when you had to send physical checks/money orders through the mail. It felt like an online flea market or garage sale where you’d get to know certain buyers and sellers. Feedback was critical, and you never bid on something you didn’t plan to buy because any hit to your reputation was a huge deal.
“It was a nice little collecting community until they allowed resellers of knock-off goods in and turned the whole thing into another Amazon. I occasionally still sell collectibles, but the number of people who don’t bother paying is huge now. I miss old eBay,” stated one user.
One user also shared, “Blue-collar residential neighborhoods in the city.”
Another user commented, “Yes! This is my answer, too. Not just houses in general but poor neighborhoods, in particular, are being f- over. You can see the tale here in the property history on Realtor.com. Lots and lots of houses were previously on the market for $50,000, bought, and then flipped and listed for $250k to $300k in a ZIP code where the median income is $34.5k, a good $20k less than the median income for the city. Shockingly, no one wants to spend $300k for a s- remodel in the ‘hood, so most of these houses sit empty unless/until they’re put on Airbnb.”
One added, “I think the problem with gentrification in the US is twofold: a failure to provide a path to ownership for often at-risk residents (which leads to slumlords) and a failure to protect the at-risk pop who DO own property from massive tax hikes.
“No one is opposed to tearing down condemned houses and building new ones, but the neighbours who have been there should not get affected by massive tax increases.”
“Quiet out-of-the-way country cabins sitting by lakes. Now they are overpriced Airbnbs,” posted one user.
Another user commented, “I’d even say Airbnbs themselves. They started as a potentially cheap alternative to hotels run by people with extra space they aren’t doing anything with. Now people build guest houses specifically for Airbnb and treat It like a full-on rental.”
One user suggested, “If you do decide to go to an Airbnb as a getaway, I’d recommend looking for one on a farm. From what I’ve seen, they’re usually run by the farmers as a sort of side gig and not some company or wealthy person.
“The last one I went to was out in the middle of nowhere with like 70 acres that you’re free to explore, and it was actually at an animal rehabilitation center. They rented out their spare room as an Airbnb as a way to bring in more money to put towards the animals. It was insanely cool.
“They had a ton of animals that were being rehabilitated. The living room had a giant window that looked straight into the snow macaque enclosure. It was their inside feeding area, so you could watch them chill and eat like 2 feet away. There was a flock of chickens that would follow you around; most of them were bald or had b-m legs or other issues that would get them slaughtered at a farm. There were storks, peacocks, a very playful otter, spider monkeys, a d-head heron that kept pecking at my boots, boxes, and a lot more, but they even had tigers. Apparently, they were rescued from a carnival and couldn’t be released into the wild. It was so calm and also sweet to know that you were contributing a bit just by staying there.
“Edit: guess I should’ve included it in the original comment. It’s called ‘The Suite at the Ridge’ in Hocking Hills, Ohio. The Airbnb itself wasn’t crazy lovely or anything, but it was perfectly fine, and you’re there to be around the animals anyways. Unfortunately, I can’t post pictures here because I have some I’d love to share.
“Edit 2: I can’t seem to get the listing to show up in a search, only by looking through messages and it says that the host ‘no longer has access to Airbnb’ so I’m not sure what happened. We went in January, so it wasn’t even a year ago. But if you want to look at other sites, the sanctuary is Union Ridge Wildlife Center.
“Edit 3: Don’t Google the name of the wildlife center unless you want my happy post to become a sad post. Turns out it wasn’t as wholesome as I thought it was.”
One online user stated, “Van life and tiny house living.”
Another user replied, “It’s like they gentrified the trailer park.”
Another user commented, “Not where I live. We still have proper trailer parks loaded with meth, pit bulls and domestic violence.”
A user commented, “Buying a “fixer-upper” home and spending weekends working on it. I was really looking forward to that.”
One user responded, “I’ve seen so many nice period houses completely gutted on the inside by modern renovations. If I buy a 1930s house, I don’t want a stupid Scandinavian minimalist interior!”
“Thrift shopping. I’m not *thrifting* I’m f- broke,” one user commented.
Another user added, “Sometimes I feel like it’s cheaper to buy clothes at Target or Walmart brand new than it is to buy from a thrift store.”
A Redditor stated, “Counterculture-based festivals. Burning Man was on my bucket list until rich folks started showing up with bodyguards and started establishing private zones.”
One user added, “Counterculture as a whole seems to be getting gentrified. In the Netherlands, there are a lot of places you can go to that have a ‘counterculture aesthetic’ or more specifically, ‘squat aesthetic’ but have exorbitant prices. Squatting used to be vast, and multiple venues in the Netherlands (like Paradiso and Melkweg) have their humble beginnings as a squat. Ruigoord, a village close to Amsterdam that got squatted 50 years ago, also completely lost its soul and is filled with yuppies.
“Counterculture is being gentrified, sanitized and sold back to people at exorbitant prices as something ‘new, weird and hip.’”
One user posted, “Going to the farmers market.” A user replied, “I went to a farmer’s market where only one vendor sold fruits and vegetables. There were three boutique honey stands and an old white lady selling ‘native’ art. St Philips Plaza in Tucson, for anyone who knows what I’m talking about. So dumb.”
“Houses. We poor people would work our entire lives to own one. Property became a great investment and a way to increase wealth, so rich people bought them. Not to live in as intended but to rent to the poor and keep them poor by renting so they will never be able to save enough to afford their own.” a user added to the thread.
One Redditor shared, “Fajitas. I remember being able to get skirt steak really cheap and sometimes for free.”
One user replied, “That goes for any ‘cheap’ cut of meat.”
“Pickup trucks. They used to be much cheaper,” one user posted.
Another user replied, “They’re luxury minivans now.”
One user posted, “Unrestricted land. Everything gets an HOA now, and they try to force you into their jurisdiction.
“My family fought an HOA targeting my grandmother’s house. She had lived there for ten years before the HOA was even an idea, or the new area with big houses was cleared for construction before that.
“We ended up having Rock in her house, skirting, and rock under her deck due to insufficient money to fight an HOA she never signed on to.
“If an HOA comes out where I live (which might happen in the next 15 years), I will fight them tooth and nail for spite alone.”
“Off cuts of meat,” shared one user.
Another user replied, “I remember when chicken wings were 10 cents because they could not give them away. Now, they are an industry. They break a wing in half and call it two wings.”
One user shared, “Concerts and festivals.”
Another Redditor added, “I agree with this one. I have lost all interest in the concert/festival experience.”
“Brisket burnt ends. BBQ joints used to toss them or give them away for free,” One commenter added.
Another user replied, “BBQ used to be poor people’s food. Nobody wanted to eat ribs and brisket because they are hard to cook. Now every upper-middle-class person has a smoker, and BBQ costs an arm and a leg.”

In addition, some employers may even offer to pay a portion of your college tuition as a part of their benefits package.
There are all kinds of jobs for college students — from on-campus jobs with regular hours to side gigs you can do in your spare time. While students often find work in the retail and service industry, it’s also worth exploring other avenues for employment, including office work and even jobs related to your field of study. Working part-time while you’re in college can help you pay for tuition and other expenses. These jobs typically offer flexible hours, allowing you to work around your class schedule.
You might start your search for jobs that help pay for college with businesses you already know and love. For example, you could see if your favorite cafe is hiring or ask about opportunities at the yoga studio you love. Even if they don’t have a paying position, some small businesses offer “service swaps” where you might be able to score free coffee, meals, or exercise classes for some light work. It pays to ask!
Here’s a look at other job opportunities that can help students earn money for college.
💡 Quick Tip: Make no payments on SoFi private student loans for six months after graduation.
Colleges and universities hire students for a variety of jobs on campus. Part-time on-campus jobs are not only convenient but typically provide flexibility so you can work around your class schedule. Plus, a lot of on-campus jobs can help you build relevant skills that will serve you after graduation.
The career center at your school will likely have lots of resources that can help you find employment on campus, including an online job board. Your school can also help you find a job campus through the federal work-study program. To see out if you’re eligible for work-study, which is a needs-based program, you need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.
Below is just a sampling of on-campus job options you might consider, plus what they pay, on average, per hour:
• Administrative Assistant: $16.80 per hour
• Teaching Assistant: $17.56 per hour

• Lifeguard: $16 per hour

• Library Assistant: $14.49 per hour
• Campus tour guide: $14.81 per hour
Your school’s career center may also be able to provide information about internship opportunities in your field of study. Some college internships provide college credits, which can help you pay for college by reducing your tuition bill. In other cases, internships are paid. On average, college interns in the U.S. earn $24.63 per hour.
Don’t want to work during the school year? Summer can be a great time to focus on a career-boosting internship without distracting you from your coursework. According to a 2023 Glassdoor report , some summer internships are paying as much as $9,064 a month.
Securing a paid internship tends to be competitive, so it can be wise to apply early and make sure your application materials are compelling and complete. Internships can provide valuable learning opportunities and some of the top-rated internships even offer the opportunity for future full-time employment.
Many college students work part time in the service industry because the hours are flexible and you can often earn tips in addition to an hourly pay. If you’re looking for a part-time job that will help pay for college, you might consider working in a local boutique or other type of retail store. These jobs also provide you with valuable human and workplace skills that can be used later in your professional career.
A retail sales associate is typically required to set up store merchandise and assist customers with their shopping needs. You also might even be able to get employee discounts or earn a commission. The average retail sales associate salary in the U.S. is $14.90 an hour.
You’ve been hitting the books and now it’s time to put all of that newfound knowledge to good use. You may be paying for your education, but there are also people out there willing to pay you to share what you’ve learned, which can help make college more affordable. Consider tutoring other college students or younger students in your area of expertise. Rates will vary based on location, subject matter, and your experience level. On average, private tutors earn $25.12 an hour.
Sometimes small businesses and entrepreneurs need someone who can answer their emails, perform odd jobs online, and otherwise provide administrative support virtually. You might look for these gigs online or through your school’s career development office. Before you take on a role, it’s important to know what’s expected: Are they looking for someone to be available during specific hours or could you get everything done on your own time?
On average, a virtual assistant makes $19.19 an hour.

Babysitting can be another job option to help pay for college if you’re looking for flexibility. You can schedule jobs for weekends or nights if you’re worried about work conflicting with your school schedule. As a bonus, you may be able to squeeze in some studying while the little ones are asleep. On average, part-time college nanny jobs pay $25 an hour.
Keep in mind that caregiving isn’t just limited to little kids. You may find meaningful roles working with elderly or ill people who need help, either with day-to-day tasks or with errand running, housekeeping, or even just keeping someone company while they shop. On average, a part-time caregiver earns $15 an hour.
Having flexibility during the day can mean everything for people who work 9 to 5 and need someone to care for Fido. Consider working for a walking service rather than striking it out on your own: It may provide guaranteed hours or jobs, so you can get to know the pooches you work with. The average salary for a dog walker in the U.S. earns $17 per hour.
Driving for a ride-sharing or delivery service can be a good option during college, since you can generally set your own hours and fit the job into your schedule. How much you could make will depend on your location and the times you’re available to drive. Many Uber drivers make between $15 and $25 per hour, while the average hourly wage for food delivery drivers nationwide is $19/hour.
It can also be helpful to talk to locals to get the lay of the land — national earnings surveys may be very different from your local area, and it can be helpful to anticipate just how much demand there might be before you sign on.

If you have a sought-after skill or talent, such as writing, website design, photography, or coding, you might consider starting your own freelance business or side hustle. You can advertise your skills on a freelance platform like Fiverr or Upwork. Or, you could solicit clients in your community. For example, you might be able to build a website for a local small business or get hired to manage an off-campus store’s online brand and marketing.
Part-time jobs can be one option to help you pay for college, but what if you can find a job that not only pays you a salary but also pays for tuition? There are some major companies that offer stipends or reimbursements toward college tuition or expenses like books, even for part-time employees.
Employers generally offer tuition assistance in one of three ways:
• Tuition reimbursement Here, the company reimburses you for tuition you’ve paid. There may be a tuition cap and/or a requirement to work a certain number of hours or months before the benefit kicks in.
• Direct payment Some employers will pay eligible college costs directly to the school. In some cases, they only partner with certain schools.
• Scholarships Some employers offer education scholarships to employees for a set amount of money. As with other types of scholarships, you typically need to submit an application for the award and may also be required to maintain a certain GPA.
Here are some national companies that have well-publicized tuition assistance policies:
At Chipotle , tuition reimbursement (up to $5,250 each year) is available for both part-time and full-time employees. They also offer a Debt-Free Degree program, which covers the full cost of a four-year degree at one of 10 universities. Typically, employees must work at least 15 hours a week for four months to qualify for tuition benefits.
Smucker’s helps employees further their knowledge and skills by reimbursing them for some of the costs of qualifying continued and/or higher education. The company also offers a scholarship program for children of employees.
At Publix , associates with 90 days of continuous service who work an average of 10 hours a week are eligible to participate in the company’s tuition reimbursement program. The program covers graduate and undergraduate degree coursework, as well as some individual courses, online programs, and technical training.
Starbucks is often featured on these lists for a reason: They partnered with Arizona State University (ASU) to create the Starbucks College Achievement Plan which offers 100% tuition coverage for a first-time bachelor’s degree through Arizona State University’s online program. All employees eligible for benefits (this includes part-time employees) may take advantage of this program.
If an employee doesn’t qualify for admission to ASU, they can take part in the Pathway to Admission program, which will help them qualify for admission, tuition-free.
UPS offers a tuition assistance program at most locations in the U.S. Through their “Earn and Learn” program, you can receive up to $5,250 per calendar year, with a lifetime maximum of $25,000. There are no course or subject restrictions.
Walmart will pay 100% of tuition and books for an associate or bachelor’s degree program through several online accredited universities. This benefit is available to hourly part-time and full-time associates without a prior bachelor’s degree starting on day one.
Amazon offers tuition assistance for employees seeking a Bachelor’s degree, a high school GED, or English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) proficiency certification. You’re eligible for the program after 90 days of employment for as many years as you work in a regular, full-time role at Amazon.

Another benefit of finding a job that helps pay for college: You can figure out what you do (and don’t) want to do for a living. It can also be helpful to assess certain job paths, including how much they may pay entry-level employees. While there are always lists of most and least lucrative majors, the reality is that your major doesn’t necessarily determine your career. Talk to alums and people a few years out of school and have them give you the lowdown on their job path.
When looking for your first full-time job out of college, it’s also important to consider not just your salary, but what benefits may come into play. For example, many companies now offer employees assistance in paying off student loans. How it works varies by company, but the typical plan offers matching funds or a predetermined recurring monthly payment towards your loan. Usually, there’s a maximum dollar amount you can receive and some employers require a minimum amount of time on the job.
💡 Quick Tip: Would-be borrowers will want to understand the different types of student loans that are available: private student loans, federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans, Direct PLUS loans, and more.
The combination of scholarships, student loans, and a part-time job can help you cover the cost of going to college for four (or more) years. A part-time job will not only help you earn some money, but it could also help boost your resume. In addition, some companies offer tuition reimbursement or assistance programs for part- or full-time employees pursuing higher education. These programs may have specific requirements, such as attending a certain school or working a set number of hours per week, so be sure you understand the requirements.
If you’ve exhausted all federal student aid options, no-fee private student loans from SoFi can help you pay for school. The online application process is easy, and you can see rates and terms in just minutes. Repayment plans are flexible, so you can find an option that works for your financial plan and budget.
Cover up to 100% of school-certified costs including tuition, books, supplies, room and board, and transportation with a private student loan from SoFi.
To find out if a company offers education benefits like tuition assistance, you can talk to your manager or HR representative (if you already work there). If you’re in the interviewing process, you can ask the recruiter or hiring manager. Or, you can check the company’s website (often they will describe their benefits, including who is eligible and any other stipulations).
One disadvantage of tuition reimbursement is that you typically need to pay for your classes upfront, then submit the bill to your company for reimbursement. Some tuition reimbursement programs also have strict requirements and limitations, such as a cap on the amount of money that can be reimbursed, or only covering certain types of courses or degrees.
Also keep in mind that balancing work and courses can also be challenging for some employees to manage successfully.
Many companies offer generous tuition assistance programs in order to attract, develop, and retain high-performing employees.

Most purchases made with a credit card are straightforward: Just swipe or tap, and go. But for some things like marijuana, lottery tickets, gift cards and vehicles, it’s a little more complicated. Credit card use for those purchases, for example, may be restricted to certain states, or the transaction amount may be capped.
A money order — a prepaid, guaranteed form of payment that resembles a check — belongs to the latter category. Technically, you can buy a money order with a credit card in a roundabout way that we explain below. But even when it’s possible to pay with plastic, it’s probably not worth it.
Most retailers, banks and credit unions don’t let you purchase money orders with a credit card. Popular places to get a money order — including the U.S. Postal Service, Walmart, Western Union and 7-Eleven — accept only cash or debit cards for money order purchases.
There is a workaround to using a credit card to buy a money order, but it’s expensive. Here’s how it would work:
You could use your credit card to take out a cash advance. In this scenario, you’d use your credit card like a debit card at an ATM and withdraw money. Then, you would use the funds from the cash advance to purchase the money order.
However, unlike cash withdrawn from a bank account, a cash advance must be paid back to the credit card issuer. And that’s far from the only drawback:
Issuers usually charge a cash advance fee, often $10 or 5% of the advance amount, whichever is greater.
Interest on cash advances starts accruing immediately. There is no grace period, as you might have with normal purchases.
The interest rate for cash advances is often higher than it is for purchases.
For the most seamless experience, pay for a money order with a payment method accepted by the retailer or institution. These typically include:
Debit card.
Traveler’s check.
Transfer from your bank.
Note that many places charge a fee to issue a money order, even when you pay with an acceptable form of payment. These fees are usually $5 or less.
