There aren’t many people who know that many major credit card issuers including American Express and MasterCard offer a program known as price protection. Just like at Wal-Mart, if you buy something today and find it at another store tomorrow for twenty dollars less, you may be able to seek reimbursement for the difference from your credit card company.
The same goes for if the product suddenly comes down in price later. If you buy something from a store one day with your credit and its ten bucks less the next day, you can contact your credit card company and seek those ten dollars in reimbursement.
It sounds too good to be true, but with just a little research you could find yourself saving hundreds of dollars every month.
How Credit Card Price Protection Works
For demonstration purposes, we’re going to say that you bought a $500 television for Christmas. But, before New Year’s Day, you see it for $400 at another store – same television, same size, same features, for less money.
I’ll wager this is something that’s happened to all of us at one point or another. But if you bought that television with your credit card, you might be able to get reimbursed for that extra hundred you spent if your issuer offers a price protection policy.
It is likely that your credit issuer will request information, like a copy of your receipt, an advertisement for the cheaper product in question, and possibly the item or model number. If you can provide the information they require within the time specified in your contract (usually 30-90 days), they will investigate. If they find that the item is indeed cheaper somewhere else or at a later time, they will return the $100 you lost in the transaction.
Check with the company that issued your credit card to find out if they participate in the price protection policy. You may also want to familiarize yourself with they’re specific rules and policies pertaining to price protection. But, if this seems like something that happens to you often, it’s well worth the effort.
