Earnings Calendar Highlights
Stock market closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
IBKR, $69.02), an international broker/dealer, has been on a tear ever since its third-quarter report in late October. Strong revenues growth of 17.6% and a rise in daily average revenue trades (DARTs) helped trigger what has since been a 37% jump in the share price.
Wall Street is expecting another quarter of growth when IBKR reports its Q4 results after the Jan. 19 close. On the whole, analysts are looking for 11.8% year-over-year revenue growth to $558.85 million, and 3.5% profit growth to 59 cents per share.
Piper Sandler analysts, in a recent earnings preview, say that trading activity shot to record levels in Q4 2020, with IBKR reporting 56% YoY account growth to just less than 1.1 million accounts, and that DARTs reached a record quarterly level of 1.9 million (+160% YoY).
While Piper Sandler maintained its full-year estimates for Interactive Brokers’ 2020, 2021 and 2022 earnings, it raised its 12-month price target to $76 per share.
Earnings Spotlight: Netflix
Netflix (NFLX, $497.98) was well-known among most investors as being the belle of the stay-at-home ball. Yes, people forced to remain homebound certainly had more choices thanks to new streaming offerings from Apple (AAPL), Disney (DIS) and others, but even massive Netflix still had more customers to nab.
NFLX shares have been rangebound since July, however, as many investors have turned their eyes to the still-unknown end date of the pandemic and a return to something resembling normalcy – which for many might include more time away from the screen, and a paring-down of their streaming subscriptions.
Fourth-quarter expectations are plenty positive. The consensus estimate is for revenues of $6.61 billion (+21.0% YoY) and earnings of $1.38 per share (+6.2%).
“While not expecting the beats we saw last year, we still expect solid overall global subscriber trends, with revenue benefiting from recent price increases,” write Baird equity analysts, who rate NFLX at Outperform.
What the pros are less certain on, however, is the outlook for 2021.
“While NFLX’s stock has underperformed ((35)% vs +3% SPX) since our July preview, we still don’t have line of sight to get more constructive at current levels against a backdrop of mixed data in our work (price increases demonstrating pricing power but weaker trends in many sub metrics we track outside of some Int’l markets),” writes UBS’s Eric Sheridan, who rates the stock at Neutral.
“NFLX’s 1Q21 guidance (and potentially thoughts on the full year) should provide a baseline level of expectations, though uncertainty around the trajectory emerging from the pandemic will still remain,” add Raymond James strategists (Market Perform).
Netflix will report Jan. 19 after the close.

INTC, $57.58) upcoming quarterly report, due out after the Jan. 21 closing bell, is shaping up to be a lot more interesting than it looked like it would be just more than a week ago.
Intel recently announced that CEO Robert Swan would be transitioned out, and that VMware (VMW) chief Pat Gelsinger would take the reins. Argus Research (Buy) outlines the challenges facing Intel’s new head:
“The company faced multiple stumbles in its in-house development and production of 10 nm CPUs. That allowed merchant foundries such as TSMC to push past Intel, empowering rival AMD with its 7 nm solutions,” Argus’ Jim Kelleher writes. “Simultaneously, Intel’s hegemony in data center processing has been threatened by the development of alternative approaches, including GPU compute from Nvidia and ARM-based processors from Marvell, Qualcomm and others, along with EPYC CPUs from AMD. Pressure from an activist investor may also have accelerated the CEO’s exit.”
Even Gelsinger proves up to the task, investors might need to be patient.
“We also believe any change will take time, particularly with INTC already having addressed many of the easier avenues for improving performance (e.g. divesting modems and memory) leaving the harder questions (manufacturing struggles and its IDM model) as yet to be resolved,” writes Wedbush’s Matt Bryson, who rates the stock at Underperform.
Intel shares are sitting with a small decline over the past 12 months versus a 60%-plus improvement in the VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH), illustrating Intel’s inability to take advantage of trends lifting the broader space.
Analyst expectations for the company’s Q4 also demonstrate its difficulties; the pros are looking for a 13.5% decline in revenues to $17.48 billion, and a 27.6% drop in profits to $1.10 per share.
