(Update: see end of post for update on these rules)
New reports indicate that Dell.com consumer accounts might have a limit of placing 6 orders every 6 months.
Many of us are aware of the problems people incur with getting an order through on Dell.com. Lots of us make Dell purchases to use up the $200 American Express Business Platinum credit which is available once in the first half of the calendar year and again in the second half for $400 total per year.
Milestomemories and teetertotterboy on r/churning both heard from Dell reps that consumer accounts have a limit of 6 orders per 6 months. It’s not clear if that 6 months is rolling and unclear whether it counts cancelled orders. According to the reports, the limit is unrelated to XBOX gift card orders and would be the same for any item ordered.
It seems absurd that Dell wouldn’t want a consumer to make more than six purchases, and we might be missing part of the picture.
Calling in to Dell sometimes helps people get orders through too. It might be possible to create a Dell business account to get around these limits. And it’s also still possible that XBOX gift cards are the reason for the cancellations (though the Dell reps may not realize it), which would mean ordering other items would help get orders through. Possibly having more than one Dell account can help as well.
Update: Here’s a good discussion thread on this topic. And here is a list of Dell rules, according to MEAB:
- Any more than five orders in the last six months will get you tagged as a reseller
- The time limits are rolling
- If you order five items in a single order, that still counts as a single order
- Cancelled digital orders do count against the limit, physical goods orders don’t
- Just because you’re tagged as a reseller doesn’t mean your orders will be cancelled, but there’s a much higher likelihood of cancel if so
- You can have multiple Dell accounts to side-skirt these limits, and the order limitations are on a per-account basis as long as you’re not flagged as a reseller. If you get flagged as a reseller, then all accounts at your address have the combined order limit, and possibly further restrictions like the inability to order digital goods.
On a related note, it’s been noticed that some shopping portals show a rewards limit of 3 units per month, more than that and you’re assumed to be a reseller.
