10 Movies It Seemed Obvious The Director Was in Love With The Lead

March 17, 2023 by Brett Tams

What are movies where it seemed evident that the director was in love with the leading actress? The Last Picture Show comes to mind. Peter Bogdonavich’s love for Cybill Shepherd while his wife was working on the set. It was pretty scandalous, and the public did not love the pair at the time. Here are ten other films movie fans voted had directors in love with their leading ladies.

1. Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom (1984)

“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Steven Spielberg cast Kate Capshaw as Willie Scott solely due to love,” shared one. Another added, “Forty years later, they’re still together and have seven kids.”

2. A Million Ways To Die in The West  (2014)

“I wouldn’t call it love, but I’ve always thought Seth MacFarlane wrote A Million Ways to Die in the West just so his character could get with Charlize Theron. And then he did it again on The Orville,” commented one. A second suggested that “90% of American comedians make movies where they get with a woman way out of their league.”

Finally, a third stated, “The Adam Sandler technique. Why pay for a vacation when you can write a movie that takes place somewhere exotic and get the studio to pay for it? And remember to hire all your buddies so they can come too!”

3. Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)

“Judy Garland in Meet Me in St. Louis, directed by her future husband, Vincente Minnelli, is a perfect example. She looks gorgeous in the movie and is always beautifully framed,” shared one.

4. Pride & Prejudice (2005) and Atonement (2007)

“I’ve always suspected Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice) is just a teensy bit in love with Keira Knightley, but nothing weird or inappropriate. It’s just in how he loves to shoot close-ups of her face,” someone suggested.

5.  Rear Window (1954)

“I’d say Alfred Hitchcock had a thing for Grace Kelly in Rear Window, but then again, who wouldn’t?” asked one. “He wasn’t in love with Grace Kelly or any of the lead actresses.”

“Instead, Hitchcock fetishized and objectified them – that’s obvious in how he tried to make them all look like versions of one another. In her memoir, Tippi Hedren (Marnie, The Birds) documents what a nightmare he was to work with,” another argued.

“Part of what makes Vertigo so interesting is his meta-commentary on the director molding an actress to their desires. It is a confession as well as a twisted noir story,” a third person replied.

6. Sixteen Candles (1984) and Pretty in Pink (1986)

“John Hughes with Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles and Pretty In Pink,” replied one. “The Hughes infatuation with Ringwald was the first thing I thought of when I saw this post,” another confessed.

7. Bye Bye Birdie (1963)

“Bye Bye Birdie. Anne Margret had one line until the director fell in love with her. Dick van Dyke and Janet Leigh were cast into obscurity, and Ann Margaret went on the be the star,” replied one.

8. Don Jon (2013)

“Don Jon. I don’t know about love, but I really think Joseph Gordon Levitt pulled a fast one. How can I get it on with Scarlett Johansson? That’s right, time to become a director. He won and hasn’t directed a single movie since,” someone stated.

9. Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

“Snow White and the Huntsman,” another said. “Kristen Stewart and the director had an affair. It is a great movie too. Cinematically it’s beautiful. I was bummed when this news came out and took away from the film.”

10. Garden State (2004)

“Garden State is one of these for me. It used to be one of my favorite movies, but then I watched it with the commentary, and Zach Braff is acting like a super freaking creepy weirdo to Natalie Portman the whole time,” one confessed.

Finally, someone shared, “Natalie Portman said in a Mike Nichols book that Nichols was the only director that wasn’t creepy with her. You feel horrible for her, especially since she’d been working since a young age. Her experience with Beck Bennett is gross too.”

Honorable mention for Quentin Tarantino and his female lead’s feet, particularly Uma Thurman’s. What do you think? Did Reddit get this right, or did they seriously miss the mark?
