Trellis Home Design Shop in downtown Hingham is kicking off the new year with the launch of a new custom upholstery program and a not-to-be-missed warehouse estate sale Jan 11-14.
Allison Mattison, who owns Trellis Home Design, a luxury residential Interior Design studio above the Trellis Home Shop at 28 South Street, said clients from Hingham, Cohasset, and surrounding communities may now order their own sectional, sofa, chair, ottoman, and headboard styles and customize them by choosing from a wide selection of performance fabrics and details according to their personal preferences and decor. Performance fabric sample books, such as Thibaut and Kravet, are also available to help clients make their choices.
In addition to vintage and refurbished furniture that can be upholstered in traditional or creative ways, Trellis Home also features lighting, unique and colorful art, designer pillows, and home decor. “Trellis Home Design is my Interior Design business, and Trellis Home Design Shop is my curated space where I can offer some of my favorite finds and favorite boutique lines,” Mattison explained. “They are two separate but related entities.”
For the warehouse estate sale — which runs from Jan. 11-14 — “l’ll be marking down a lot of furniture — including some very cool vintage pieces,” Mattison shared. The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Saturday, Jan. 14, when the hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The warehouse — an open storage space behind the shop — holds all kinds of treasures for clients to choose from that Mattison has acquired from auctions, estate sales, and vintage dealers from New York City to Florida over the past couple of years since Trellis Home expanded its space.
Mattison is particularly attracted to auctions from “renowned estates or estates from the sale of luxury NYC apartments” where she knows there will be some great finds. “I always shop these,” Mattison said. “I follow different auction houses that I have bought from before and who I know only accept quality items. I like to mix old and new in my designs, so I’m always hunting for unique pieces that stand out. Some end up in the shop and others as inventory for my design projects.”
She is drawn to items that have a story behind them. Among the upcoming warehouse estate sale offerings are a set of red Chippendale chairs that were part of the “Arthur” movie set, purchased from a set designer’s NYC estate.
This is the first time she has opened up the warehouse for a sale, which will offer a variety of one-of-a kind items. Many of them are in excellent condition, while others may need to be refurbished — which provides an opportunity to customize the piece.
Offerings will include Hollywood Regency mirrors, unique coffee tables and accent furniture, chairs, sofas, some custom lacquered pieces, and markdowns from the shop — including chairs, barstools, lamps, and pillows, as well as lightly-used items that have appeared in photo shoots or used as floor models.
For the sale, cash or check is preferred, and customers are responsible for picking up the items they purchase within seven days.
Trellis Home staff can recommend a local delivery service to customers who need assistance. Everyone is welcome — first come, first served.
Back to the custom upholstery program, Mattison said the shop clients “can order a brand-new sofa or sectional through this program and build it exactly the way they like.”
For instance, they can choose different arm styles, leg styles, finishes, and cushions on the furniture they build, giving them a completely custom look. Contrast welt and trim options are also available for an even more bespoke look.
“We offer custom upholstery with a designer flair,” she explained. “The fabrics are comfortable and family-friendly but also pretty! They will stand up to dogs and kids, which is important to most of our clients when investing in a custom piece of furniture. Customers can make an appointment with a design shop associate and bring in their own pictures or color swatches from their home to help match fabrics to their existing decor.”
The furniture is manufactured by a family-run business out of North Carolina that Mattison has worked with for years. “They offer great quality at a good price point, and even have a limited lifetime warranty.”
Trellis Home Design Shop “caters to people who know what they are looking for and want to ‘finish’ a room or just buy a few pieces of furniture without the need to hire a designer and without having to go to a big-box store or try to order online,” Mattison explained.
With this program they have access to creating custom pieces on their own or with the assistance of one of the Trellis Home Design Shop associates, who are well trained in the product and can help people with the process.
“Our design associates can even help clients order casegood pieces from lines we carry but don’t have in stock to fill in or finish a room,” Mattison said. “Many of the shop’s clients are familiar with the lines we carry, such as Redford House or Dunes & Duchess, who create colorful, custom-made tables, mirrors, and lighting.”
Everyone is welcome to visit Trellis Home at any time, and be sure to stop by the warehouse estate auction Jan. 11-14.
