Are you looking for the best summer side hustles?
There are plenty of ways to make extra money that can fit into your schedule and match your interests.
Whether you prefer working outdoors or want to sell handmade crafts, there’s a summer side hustle for everyone. Picking the right one can help you enjoy the warm summer months and even develop new skills.
Summer side jobs are great because you can work when you want and make extra money while enjoying the summer. They can help you save more money, reach your money goals faster, and even let you try new things you’re interested in.
For me, I have always liked side hustling in the summer. The days are longer, so it feels like I have more time to work on projects!
Best Summer Side Hustles
Below are the best summer side hustles.
1. Blogging
Blogging is a great way to make extra money during the summer. It’s perfect if you enjoy writing and sharing your thoughts.
I actually started this blog as a summer side hustle. I was looking for a way to write in my free time, and it eventually turned into a way for me to make extra income. And, now it’s my full-time job!
You can make money from blogging in several ways. Affiliate marketing is popular. This means promoting products and earning a commission for any sales made through your links. Display ads are another way. These are ads that appear on your blog, and you earn money when visitors click on them.
Though it’s hard work in the beginning, blogging can become a source of semi-passive income. Once you have enough content and visitors, you might earn money even when you’re not actively working on your blog. This means you could enjoy your summer and still see your income grow.
I have free training that you can take – How To Start A Blog FREE Course. Want to see how I built a $5,000,000 blog? In this free course, I show you how to create a blog, from the technical side to earning your first income and attracting readers.
2. Online surveys
Taking online surveys is one of the easiest summer side hustles online. Many companies want to know what their customers think about their products and are willing to pay for your opinions.
The survey companies I recommend signing up for include:
American Consumer Opinion
Survey Junkie
Prime Opinion
Swagbucks
Branded Surveys
Five Surveys
PrizeRebel
InboxDollars
I’ve done lots of surveys over the years, and what I like about them is that you can do them whenever you want – in the morning, at lunchtime, or before bed. You don’t need to follow a strict schedule, and they’re really simple to complete. This makes them great for a summer side hustle too!
3. Dog walking and pet sitting
Dog walking and pet sitting can be a great way to earn some extra money during the summer. If you love animals and enjoy being outside, this is perfect for you.
Rover is one of the most popular platforms for dog walkers and pet sitters. It’s user-friendly and has a lot of pet owners looking for help. You can set your own rates and schedule, which allows you to work whenever it fits your lifestyle.
Dog walkers typically earn between $15 and $30 an hour. How much you make depends on the number of pets and the length of time. The demand is usually high, especially during summer when pet owners go on vacation.
4. Freelance writing
Freelance writing is a flexible and rewarding summer side hustle. As a freelance writer, you can work for magazines, blogs, websites, and companies. You get to choose who you work with and what you write about, so this is a side hustle that you can easily just do in the summer if that’s the schedule that you are looking for.
One great thing about freelance writing is that you can do it from anywhere. You can work from home, a coffee shop, or even while traveling. All you need is a computer and an internet connection, and this is another reason that makes it easy to fit writing into your summer plans.
The pay for freelance writing can vary a lot. Some writers earn around $50 for a short article, while others can make $1,000 or more for longer pieces. As you gain experience and improve your skills, you can start charging higher rates.
I have been a freelance writer for around 10 years and I think it’s a great side hustle to get into.
5. Virtual assistant
A virtual assistant (VA) is someone who helps business owners with tasks through the internet. This job is great if you want a flexible schedule and the ability to work from home. You can choose who you work for and even set your own hours.
Virtual assistants handle different tasks like managing social media, organizing emails, scheduling appointments, and data entry. The best part is that you don’t need to be in the same location as your clients.
You can start as a virtual assistant on websites like Upwork or Fiverr. These platforms have many job listings for beginners. Rates for VAs usually start at $15 to $20 per hour but can go higher with experience.
Plus, many people look for extra VA help specifically in the summer so that they can focus on other things, such as going on vacation or spending more time with their kids who may be out of school for the season.
6. Tutoring
Tutoring is a great side hustle for summer. With kids out of school, many parents look for tutors to help keep their children learning. You can teach subjects like math, science, English, or even a musical instrument.
Tutoring can be done both in person and online. Online tutoring is very flexible and allows you to work from home. You can choose your hours and offer lessons at times that fit your schedule.
You can use websites like Tutor.com and Wyzant to find tutoring jobs.
7. Handmade crafts selling
Selling handmade crafts can be a fun and profitable summer side hustle.
Platforms like Etsy help you reach buyers from all over the world. Summer craft fairs and festivals are also great places to sell your handmade goods.
Some things you can sell include:
Selling handmade crafts allows you to be creative and make some extra money. Whether online or at local events, there’s always a market for unique, handmade items.
8. Photography
You can get paid to take pictures, even if you just have a smartphone. There are many ways to turn your love of photography into extra income.
One way to make money is by selling your photos on stock photo websites. These sites, like Shutterstock, iStock, and Adobe Stock, let you upload your images and earn money each time someone downloads them.
Another option is taking event photos. Weddings, BBQs, and family reunions are always in need of photographers, and there are typically many events like these during the summer months.

9. Rideshare driving
Rideshare driving can be a great way to make extra money during the summer. Many people use services like Uber and Lyft to get around their town or when they are on vacation.
You get to choose when you work so this means you can fit driving around your schedule. If you have free time in the evenings or weekends, you can make the most of it.
You don’t need any special skills to start. As long as you have a car and a phone, you are almost ready to go. The application process is usually quick too.
Driving in busy areas or during peak times can also help you earn more. Events, weekends, and holidays can be especially busy, meaning more rides and more money for you.
10. House sitting
House sitting is a great way to make extra money over the summer. People tend to go on vacation in the summer and need someone to watch their homes.
You might need to water plants, collect mail, and keep an eye on the house. Sometimes, taking care of pets is also part of the job. Look for house sitting gigs in your local community (you can start by posting in a local Facebook group advertising your service) or try online platforms.
Websites like Rover and TrustedHousesitters can also help you find house sitting jobs. These sites connect homeowners with reliable sitters.
11. Pet grooming
Pet grooming is a great way to earn extra money during the summer. Many pet owners look for convenient and affordable ways to keep their pets looking neat, especially in the summer when it can be so hot.
Mobile pet grooming is especially popular. You can visit pet owners at their homes, and this saves them a trip to the groomer’s and makes your service more attractive.
You can offer services like haircuts, baths, nail trimming, and ear cleaning. Many people are willing to pay well for these services. They love their pets and want them to look their best.
12. Coach
Coaching can be a great way to make extra money during the summer. Do you have a skill or talent that others want to learn?
Summer camps and local community centers sometimes look for temporary coaches. This could be a fun way to spend your summer, and you can make a good amount of money while doing it.
Sometimes, private coaching can be even more profitable. People are willing to pay more for one-on-one lessons. For example, you might charge $30 to $50 per hour.
You can also offer online coaching. This is great if you want to work from home. Websites like Zoom make it easy to connect with students anywhere.
13. Babysitting
Babysitting is a great way to earn some extra cash over the summer. With school out, many parents need help watching their kids. Babysitting is flexible, allowing you to choose your own hours.
To get started, you can talk to families in your neighborhood. Let them know you’re available and you can also post on local Facebook groups or use websites like UrbanSitter.
I do recommend taking a babysitting course, such as one that teaches important skills like first aid and CPR. Knowing these skills can help you feel more confident and assure parents that their kids are in good hands.
14. Deliver groceries
Delivering groceries is one of the best summer side hustles. With services like Instacart, you can shop for and deliver groceries to customers, and it’s easy to start.
You just need a phone and a reliable car. You pick up orders through the app, shop for items, and then deliver them to the customer’s door.
You can choose your own hours. This means you can work whenever you have free time, such as in the summer. It’s perfect if you have a busy schedule or if you want flexible work.
On average, you can make between $11 and $20 per hour. Your earnings depend on factors like order size and tips. The more orders you complete efficiently, the more you can earn.
15. Mow lawns
Mowing lawns is a great way to make money during the summer. Many people need help keeping their yards neat. This means there are plenty of opportunities for you.
You can start by telling your neighbors and friends about the yard work services that you provide. And, of course, you will need equipment like a reliable lawn mower and other necessary tools.
Mowing lawns is great because it can be flexible. You can set your own hours. This makes it easy to fit into your summer schedule.
During the hot months, many people will need regular lawn care. This means you might have steady work all summer long. It’s also a job that doesn’t require a lot of experience.
16. Rent your house
Renting your house can be a great way to earn extra money during the summer. If you have extra space or a vacation home, you can try listing it on rental platforms because many people look for short-term rentals for their vacations.
You can use popular sites like Airbnb or Vrbo to reach a wide audience.
Consider your availability and set clear rules for your guests. You might want to rent your whole house or just a room. Either way, hosting guests can be flexible around your schedule.
I know someone who rents out their house during the summer so that they can travel those months and have money to put toward their trips. Their place always sells out fast, even up to a year in advance! And then for the rest of the year, they live in their house. So, this is definitely something that can be done just in the summer months to make extra money.
17. Clean houses
Cleaning houses is a great summer side hustle. Many people want their homes to be spotless during this time of year. You can provide services like dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and kitchen cleaning.
You don’t need special training to start. Just basic cleaning supplies like brooms, mops, and cleaning products. You can also advertise your services in local community boards or online classifieds.
Sometimes, families prefer a deep clean during summer. This could include windows, carpets, and upholstery. You can charge by the hour or set a flat rate for the whole job.
Working as a house cleaner can be flexible. You set your own hours and can choose how many clients to take on. If you do a good job, you might get regular clients who hire you every summer.
18. Lifeguard
Being a lifeguard is one of the best summer side hustles. If you love being by the water, this job is perfect for you. You get to work at pools, beaches, or water parks.
To become a lifeguard, you need to get certified. This usually involves taking a class where you learn swimming skills and rescue techniques.
Lifeguards have important responsibilities and they have to watch over swimmers and make sure everyone is safe. They also need to be ready to help in case of an emergency.
19. Rent your car
Renting out your car can be a great way to make extra money during the summer if you have a car just sitting around.
There are platforms where you can list your car for rent, such as Turo. This can be especially useful if you’re going on vacation or don’t need your car for a little bit.
Some travelers prefer renting from private owners because it’s often cheaper and more convenient than traditional rental companies. For me, I enjoy renting cars on Turo because I can get the exact car I want, and usually the car is closer to where I need to pick it up, so I waste less time.
20. Have a garage sale
Having a garage sale is a great way to make extra money during the summer. You can sell items you no longer need, like clothes, toys, and old electronics.
Start by going through your home and gathering things you want to sell and cleaning them up if needed (this will help you to get more money).
Next, advertise your garage sale. You can do this by putting up signs around your neighborhood and posting on social media sites like Facebook.
One thing I have noticed more and more people doing is having a community yard sale as well – this is where you may have your friends, family, or neighbors join in on one big yard sale. So, if you don’t have a ton of things to sell, this may be one way to still have a garage sale, declutter, and make some money.
21. Sell stuff
Similar to having a garage sale, you can also try selling stuff online, which is a great way to make some extra money in the summer. Look around your house for items you don’t use anymore. This could be clothes, toys, or old gadgets.
One of the easiest ways to sell your things is through online marketplaces like eBay or Facebook Marketplace.
For years, I had a business where I flipped items for resale. It was an easy way to make extra money!
22. Sports referee
Being a sports referee is a great side hustle for summer. Most games happen in the evenings and on weekends, so it fits well around a regular job.
Youth sports leagues are always looking for referees. You can earn around $25 to $50 per game. Higher levels, like high school or college, pay even more. Some college games can pay up to $150 per game.
To become a referee, check with your local sports departments. You might need some basic training, but it usually isn’t too hard. It’s a fun way to earn extra money and enjoy sports at the same time.
If you know the rules well and enjoy being on the field, this could be the perfect summer side hustle for you.

Whether you’re looking at homes for sale in Charlotte, NC, already renting a home in Atlanta, GA, or looking for your first apartment in Charleston, SC, decorating your child’s room is no easy feat. Their rooms are more than just a place to sleep; it’s a space where they can play, learn, and grow. Designing a kids’ room requires careful consideration of their current needs and future growth, ensuring the space is adaptable and flexible.
From selecting the right color palette to incorporating educational elements and ensuring the room is safe and organized, every detail contributes to creating an environment that nurtures your child’s development and happiness. Taryn Pratt reminds moms and parents alike to keep an open mind when curating a kids’ space. “Don’t underestimate what you can transform your spaces into,” Pratt shares. “Simple is best. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to make your room look nice.”
Inspiring and practical kids’ room ideas
Whether you’re designing a nursery for a newborn, creating a fun and functional space for a toddler, or updating a room to suit the evolving tastes of an older child, these inspiring and practical kids’ room ideas will help you transform a simple room into a magical haven that your child will love and cherish.
1. Embrace fun
Before diving into the journey of decorating your kid’s room, it’s important to channel the fun spirit of kids. “Kids are passionate about their favorite characters and interests, making their interests the center of the decorating = FUN,” Eboni with CR8JOI shares. “Whether it’s Batman, Barbie, sports, or a particular trending “aesthetic”- use toys and color to bring the theme to life. Since childhood interests change like the wind, focus on elements that can be easily updated. A themed pillow or picture, for example, can be easily swapped out. A themed room can be a joy-filled space where their creativity can shine.”
2. Themed rooms
Themed rooms, like Eboni shared above, can ignite your child’s imagination and make their space uniquely theirs. These spaces can provide a sense of adventure and excitement, creating an environment that stimulates creativity and play. Themes can also serve as an educational tool, teaching children about different worlds and concepts.
Space explorer: Use starry wallpapers to give the illusion of outer space, along with glow-in-the-dark ceiling stickers of planets and constellations. A spaceship bed can become the centerpiece, making bedtime an intergalactic adventure. Incorporate elements like moon and star-shaped cushions and posters of astronauts and spacecraft.
Nature lover: Create a forest ambiance with treehouse beds and leaf-shaped rugs. Wall decals of animals, trees, and birds can make the room feel like a walk in the woods. Consider adding a small indoor tent or a reading nook with a nature-themed design to enhance the outdoor feel.
Fairy tale: Canopy beds draped with soft, flowing fabrics can evoke a princess’s castle or a knight’s tent. Pastel colors and whimsical furniture like mushroom stools and fairy lights can transform the room into a magical kingdom. Add storybook characters on the walls and a treasure chest for toy storage.
3. Educational spaces
Incorporating educational elements into your child’s room can promote learning and curiosity. This approach ensures that learning is seamlessly integrated into daily activities, fostering a love for knowledge from a young age.
World maps: Use wallpaper or decals featuring world maps to teach geography. This can be both decorative and educational, helping children learn about different countries, continents, and oceans. Add interactive elements like map pins or stickers to mark places they’ve learned about or visited.
Bookshelves: Accessible bookshelves filled with age-appropriate books encourage reading and independence. Organize books by theme or reading level, and create a cozy reading corner with comfortable seating and good lighting to make reading time enjoyable.
4. Multi-functional furniture
Kids’ rooms often require flexibility as they grow. Multi-functional furniture can adapt to their changing needs, maximizing space and usability. Investing in versatile pieces can save money and space in the long run.
Bunk beds with desks: Ideal for shared rooms or small spaces, bunk beds with built-in desks provide sleeping, studying, and storage areas. The desk underneath can be used for homework, art projects, or computer time, making efficient use of vertical space.
Convertible cribs: Cribs that transform into toddler beds and later into daybeds or full-sized beds grow with your child. “Kids grow fast,” shares Mikayla Taylor. “Opt for an heirloom-quality convertible crib. With this crib, you can update your kids’ room with each stage up to a full-size bed. It’s a nice keepsake to remember those precious baby days as your child grows.” This adaptability ensures that the bed remains a fixture in the room for many years, making it a smart investment.
5. Creative storage solutions
A well-organized room can make playtime and cleanup easier. Creative storage solutions help keep toys, clothes, and books neatly tucked away, ensuring the room remains tidy and clutter-free. John with RAD Children’s Furniture recommends implementing a toy rotation system to keep their room organized and uncluttered. “Display a few toys at a time and store the rest out of sight. Regularly rotate the toys available to the child. This not only keeps the environment tidy but also renews interest and engagement with their toys. A minimalistic approach reduces overwhelm and helps children focus better.”
Under-bed storage: Utilize the space under the bed with drawers or bins for toys, clothes, and out-of-season items. This is a great way to keep the floor clear and make use of every inch of the room.
Height-appropriate, kid-friendly shelves: Use vertical space for storage by installing shelves for books, toys, and decorative items. Wall-mounted shelves keep items off the floor and within reach, creating a clean and organized look.Choosing shelving that matches your child’s height, such as our infant and 3-tier shelves is another great option, John with RAD Children’s Furniture also recommends. “This design allows children to easily access their belongings, fostering independence and encouraging self-directed play. It also enhances safety, reducing the need for children to climb or reach for items.”
Toy chests: Classic and functional, toy chests can double as benches. Opt for designs with soft-close lids to prevent pinched fingers and add cushions on top to provide extra seating.
6. Personal touches
Adding personal touches makes the room feel special and uniquely suited to your child’s personality. These elements can reflect their interests, hobbies, and achievements, making the space truly their own.
Customized art: Frame your child’s drawings and paintings to create a gallery wall. This not only showcases their creativity but also boosts their confidence and sense of pride in their accomplishments.
Name decals: Wall decals or wooden letters spelling out your child’s name add a personal touch. Choose designs that match the room’s theme and color scheme for a cohesive look.
Photo displays: String lights with clips can hold photos, drawings, and mementos, creating a dynamic and ever-changing display. This adds a warm, personal element to the room and allows for easy updates as new memories are made.
7. Interactive play areas
Incorporating areas dedicated to play within the room encourages imagination and activity. These spaces can be both fun and functional, providing a dedicated area for various activities.
Reading nooks: Create a cozy corner with bean bags, soft cushions, and shelves of books. A small canopy or tent can make the nook even more inviting, offering a quiet retreat for reading and relaxation.
Art stations: Set up a small table with art supplies for drawing, painting, and crafting. Ensure the area is well-lit and equipped with storage for supplies to keep the space organized and ready for creativity.
8. Lighting
Proper lighting can make a big difference in a child’s room, affecting both functionality and mood. Layered lighting ensures the room is versatile for various activities.
Layered lighting: Combine ceiling lights for general illumination, wall sconces for ambient lighting, and table lamps for task lighting. This approach provides flexibility and ensures that the room is well-lit for different activities.
Night lights: “Using nightlights is also essential to help with any potential nightmares or night terrors that may be happening,” Unnati Patel, certified pediatric sleep consultant and owner of Nested to Rested Sleep Consulting notes. “It also helps provide a clear path at night to the restroom in case they need to use the potty.”
9. Safety protocols
Safety is paramount in any child’s room. Ensuring the room is secure and hazard-free allows for peace of mind and a safe environment for your child to play and sleep.
Furniture anchors: Secure heavy furniture like dressers and bookshelves to the wall to prevent tipping. This is especially important as children may climb or pull on furniture.
Allergy considerations: Something you may not have thought of when planning your child’s perfect bedroom space is how to provide a healthy space with regard to allergies, asthma, sensitivities, and general health. from The Allergy Mom, Melissa Scheichl recommends paying extra attention to materials that attract dust mites.
“Dust mites affect quality of sleep, breathing, and general health and well-being and are attracted to carpeting, upholstery, drapery, stuffed animals, bedding, and mattresses. The dust mite feces can wreak havoc for allergies, asthma, skin sensitivities, etc,” Scheichl warns. “To reduce the effect of dust mites, consider protective mattress and pillow covers that advertise dust-mite protection (they need to be of a particular quality and fabrication to be effective – not just any mattress cover will do – and they need to completely encase the mattress.”Scheichl also recommends purchasing a portable HEPA filter or other indoor air purifier to remove particulate matter from the air in the bedroom.
Soft flooring: Use rugs or padded mats to cushion falls and provide a soft surface for play. Choose non-slip options to prevent tripping and sliding.
10. Don’t discount teenage years
As children grow into teenagers, their room becomes a vital personal space that reflects their evolving identity and provides a sanctuary for study, relaxation, and socializing. It’s important not to discount the teenage years when designing a child’s room, as their needs and tastes will change significantly during this period. Creating a flexible and adaptable space ensures that the room can evolve with them, accommodating their growth and changing interests.
Reduce clutter: “Your teen has a lot going on in their mind so try to keep things less noisy (in the visual sense),” shares Leyla Preston, founder and editor of Motherhood Diaries. “Studies show that maintaining a serene bedroom environment by minimizing clutter can enhance sleep quality. Make sure the room is free from excessive stimuli beyond schoolwork, including electronic devices that emit blue light to help maintain a conducive sleep setting. Blue light exposure from screens is known to disrupt the circadian rhythm, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Tech integration: On the other hand, modern teenagers rely heavily on technology for both schoolwork and entertainment. Incorporate solutions for managing electronics, such as a charging station for devices, a desk with built-in cable management, and adequate outlets. Ensure the room has reliable Wi-Fi coverage and consider adding a comfortable seating area for reading or using a laptop when necessary.
Designing a place where kids can be kids

The move was risky. And I don’t regret it one bit.
I’ve always thought animal prints were for other people. That was then. I now have two zebra-striped chairs in my living room. With the blessing of a designer I trust, I tapped the animal within. Now I wonder what took me so long.
A few months ago, I realized my adjoining dining and living rooms looked tired. I wanted to update them, make them come alive, but I couldn’t afford to start over.
So, I called Los Angeles designer Christopher Grubb, whom I’ve known for years, and asked for a consult. I would do all the legwork, if he could just tell me what to keep, get rid of or revamp. We agreed I would keep the traditional dining table, but replace the stodgy tapestry dining side chairs with more modern ones. And keep the two dining room armchairs but reupholster them in a more contemporary fabric and move them into the living room.
I gathered nine fabric swatches to test drive and sent photos to Grubb. Then, before he could answer, I narrowed the selection and sent him a picture of the finalists, eliminating a bold zebra print I grabbed on a whim but ruled out. (It’s for other people.)
“What happened to the zebra?” Grubb asked.
“Oh, it seemed a little, well, wild.”
“It would look fantastic on those chairs,” he said. “And paint the wood glossy lacquer black.”
Designers take risks where the rest of us fear to tread. My little heart turned a somersault.
Next day, the tired tapestry armchairs, seven yards of zebra fabric and I were exuberantly off to the upholsterer, who took one look at the project, raised his eyebrows and said, “That will be fun.”
When the chairs came back, I sent Grubb a photo.
“Dang!” he said. “You turned them into not just useful pieces of furniture, but pieces of art.”
Many homeowners have furniture pieces that would look great flipped, but they just don’t see it. “They have heavy Mediterranean furniture they are trying to bust out of to make their homes more contemporary,” he said. “Then we give it a twist. Maybe we paint a humdrum brown end table robin’s egg blue and turn it into a fun and functional accessory.”
Worried it will “ruin” the piece? “You don’t like it anymore as it is, so what’s to lose?” he said.
“I’m a big fan of doing what you did,” said Dean Stills, co-owner of Stills Upholstery in Longwood, Fla. “I love to see people repurpose old furniture to make it fit their homes today by recovering it with more modern fabric and changing the finish. It’s so much better than taking it to the curb.”
Grubb encourages DIY decorators to work with designers the way I did. “Do the legwork, then hire a designer to consult for an hour or two,” he said. “People don’t take risks, so we walk through room after room of beige and grey.”
None of us wants to be that person.
If you’d like to add some pizzazz to your home, here are some moves Grubb and Stills suggest you consider.
Use the power of paint. A glossy fun color on brown wood furniture is an inexpensive way to modernize it and turn it into an art piece. (It’s also easier than refinishing.) Consider painting a chest a glossy lime or a mirror frame bright orange. When Stills painted my wood chairs glossy black, he used Crystal Conversion Varnish, because it creates a tough, hard finish that holds up.
Change the hardware. Switching out distressed iron knobs or ornate vintage pulls for sleek ones in brushed gold or polished chrome can instantly and inexpensively enliven old furniture.
Refresh fabrics. Before retiring a piece of upholstered furniture, think about recovering it. Older furniture, Stills said, is typically much better made than newer furniture sold today. Upholsterers can also replace and repair worn inner springs and foam.
Add a wow fixture. Chandeliers are a great place to take an expressive risk, Grubb said. “These standalone accessories don’t have to go with anything. They could be covered in feathers and look great.”
Incorporate some Lucite. Because it leans contemporary, just one Lucite piece, such as a chair, end table or bar cart, can bridge old and new looks, Grubb said.
Mix in some metal. Shiny metallic finishes also feel contemporary. Adding chrome table lamps, bookends or side tables can modernize an otherwise traditional room.
Reframe the art. Traditional art doesn’t need a traditional frame. Put an old painting in a contemporary frame or eliminate the frame altogether.

Living Wall Art ($319 and up)
Summer 2024 design trends are all about natural living and that means opening blinds and curtains to let in lots of light — and maybe even adding a living wall (or moss wall art) to a living area or bathroom.
Prices for living walls vary widely. The sky’s the limit to how much you can spend for a professionally installed living wall, but this Moss Wall Art from Wayfair won’t break the bank at just $319.

Indoor Trees and Plants ($20 to $70)
If a moss wall feels like too much of an investment, or if you don’t have empty wall space to hang it, consider adding plants and indoor trees to your living room and bedroom. This indoor cat palm from Home Depot stands roughly three to four feet tall and thrives in a moderate sunlight environment, making it the perfect indoor plant. It has air-purifying capabilities to remove toxins from the air. Find plants like this one ranging from $20 to $70, depending on the size and species.
Smart Lighting ($30 to $87)
Smart technology adds style and convenience to the modern home, creating the perfect blend of natural living and high-tech design. Sophisticated smart home systems, professionally installed, can cost tens of thousands of dollars. But, you can upgrade various components over time on a budget and use a consumer smart home hub, like Hubspace, for control.
The Denning 13-inch Brushed Nickel Smart Voice Controlled LED Light from Home Depot’s Home Decorators Collection works with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or The Home Depot Hubspace App. If you’re upgrading the lighting in your home, there’s no reason not to choose smart components — particularly since prices compare to regular lighting.
Large Mirrors ($56 to $300+)
Mirrors reflect light to make a space feel bigger and brighter. Oversized mirrors can be propped against a wall or hung on a door, The Glass Guru suggested. Make sure you choose one with a frame that matches your room to create a cohesive look.
This Metal Arch Mirror from Wayfair is just $76, but you can spend a lot more (or less) depending on the size and style mirror you need.
Large, Bold Tiles in Unexpected Places ($500 to $1000 and up)
Tiles make their way out of the bathroom and into dining rooms, living rooms, and even on walls. The bigger and bolder the design, the better. Floor & Décor has a wide variety to fit any budget. You can outfit an accent wall with these Pianetto Monaco Noir polished porcelain tiles for under $500.
Accent Walls ($40 or less)
If $500 is to steep for your budget, a simple coat of paint can also create a focal point in any room. Accent walls remain popular as a way to infuse personality and visual interest in your space. A gallon of Behr paint sells for around $40 at Home Depot, and is more than enough to cover one wall in a 12′ by 12′ room. For more savings, check out the bargain bins, where stores sell paint “mis-tints,” or paint that customers rejected, at a discount.
Boucle Pillows ($23 to $50+)
USA Today’s Reviewed called boucle “one of 2024’s biggest design trends.” This fabric is replacing velvet as the hot upholstery, adding texture and visual interest to any room. If you aren’t ready to upgrade your sofa, you can embrace boucle in a minor way with fun throw pillows. Pottery Barn sells boucle pillow covers that you can add to existing throw pillows for under $25, or choose a pillow stuffed with down features (or a down alternative) for less than $50. Colors range from bright cardinal red to neutral ivory or camel to match any design aesthetic.

When interior designer Mandy Cheng agreed to take on a project in LA’s upscale Pacific Palisades neighborhood, she came prepared to discuss ideas for how the clients wanted to live and function in their new surroundings. The clients, tech-industry executives Stuart Leung and Monika Shah, “wanted me to collaborate on ways to make the home express their own distinctive style,” says Cheng, an AD100 designer who parlayed her experience in television and film into a career as one of LA’s top decorators.
The designer’s penchant for employing light, earthy tones, and organic textures helped to showcase that distinctive style while creating an interior scheme that radiates easy, unpretentious livability.
Though the Spanish Mediterranean residence stretches more than 5,800 square feet, Cheng manages to inject warmth and intimacy into each of its rooms using decor that suggests a sophisticated, urbane sensibility. Cream-colored accent chairs with curved frames greet visitors in a living room that includes a deep and spacious velvet sofa. Rounded coffee and end tables add a soft sculptural form to the space.
Wood beams were added to the living room and throughout the house to provide more visual interest to the ceilings, Cheng says. The beams are appropriate for the architectural style of the house and allow visitors to appreciate the entire space from floor to ceiling, she adds.
Custom bifold arched doors were installed to separate the living and dining rooms and create a bold statement upon entering the house. The steel doors—added with the help of SZK Metals—are a nod to the iron doors found in older 1920s Mediterranean- and Spanish-style homes. Cheng says, “These doors really helped elevate the look of these two rooms and framed them nicely, allowing for visual separation.”
The homeowners say Cheng was able to find harmony in blending modern forms and understated colors that naturally reflected their lifestyle. The couple, who have two small children, relied on the designer to synthesize their broad ideas for the home into actionable interior themes.
“When the project started, we kept using a certain set of words as a reference like ‘organic‘ and ‘comfy,’” says Leung. “Mandy understood right from the start what we were after and really brought all of those ideas together.”
Those design aesthetics are on display in the home’s kitchen and breakfast nook, which emphasize craft and materiality. The stools next to the kitchen counter have wood finishes and natural seat cords that give the space an easygoing style that’s welcoming and calming. Floating shelves were added in a kitchen that includes a brass with white leather pendant light. A custom wrap-around bench in the breakfast nook includes an expandable dining table and upholstered chairs. A handwoven pendant light in natural rattan adds a soft, sophisticated tone to the space.
“Our priority was to create a home for our family that fit to our functional and practical needs,” says Shah, whose youngest son was a newborn when the project began in 2021. “The flow from the kitchen into the nook shows how Mandy anticipated the things that would become important to our family.”
Cheng’s talent for blending understated colors with natural textures is also showcased in the primary bedroom. A Noguchi Akari pendant light created from handmade washi paper and bamboo ribbing hangs above a soft-hued bench that’s wrapped in velvet upholstery with a foam-padded frame. An ottoman in cotton velvet with fluting and a piped rim adds to the bedroom’s balance of material, color, and texture.
“Stuart and Monika had a strong sense of how they saw this design unfolding,” adds Cheng. “So we really wanted interiors that didn’t take away from their own tastes.”
For many of us, leather has become synonymous with luxury, elegance, and quality.
Famed for its durability as well as its beauty, the material is a staple of high-end interior design, especially when it comes to furnishings. From sofas and ottomans to accent pillows and wall coverings, leather can be an excellent choice for interior furnishing.
However, as with any material or design choice, there can be downsides. Leather may or may not be the best choice for furnishing your luxury space, and here we’ll explore some of its advantages and disadvantages — so you can decide whether it’s a good fit for your space.
The disadvantages of leather furnishings
Cost: Real leather can be significantly more expensive than fabric. This cost can vary depending on the quality and craftsmanship of the leather, and the brand’s reputation.
Susceptibility to damage: Unfortunately, sharp objects can scratch, tear, or puncture leather surfaces. Thankfully, you can repair leather with household products like shoe glue. To repair a tear with shoe glue, clean the surface of any dust or dirt, apply the adhesive, and tape it into place. Once the glue is dry, the tape can be removed.
Sensitivity to environmental conditions: In warm climates, leather can become hot and sticky, and in cold ones, it can become uncomfortably rigid. When exposed to direct sunlight or moisture, leather can fade or discolor.
Limited style and color options: Although leather furnishings come in various colors and finishes, options may be more limited than with fabric upholstery.
The advantages of leather furnishings
Elegance and sophistication: Leather’s natural texture and color variations can add a touch of elegance to interior spaces. It’s a highly versatile material, suiting classic, contemporary, and even more leftfield design styles.
Comfort: The soft, smooth feeling of leather is one of its most prized features. It also molds to the body over time, so it can get even more comfortable over the years.
Durability: High-quality leather is extremely durable when compared to fabric upholstery. With the right care and maintenance, leather furnishings can last many years or even decades.
Easy maintenance: Compared to other materials used in upholstery, leather is easy to clean and maintain. You can often simply wipe away spills and stains with a damp cloth, and the leather’s smooth surface makes it easy to dust. To prevent damage from light or moisture, you can keep leather furnishings out of direct sunlight and use widely available protective coatings and leather conditioners.
Leather furniture and pets: Challenges to consider
While leather furniture can elevate the look and feel of a space, there are a few very specific potential challenges you need to consider if you have pets. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
Susceptibility to scratches and tears: Pets, particularly cats and dogs, can inadvertently damage leather surfaces with their claws. Scratches can be quite visible on leather, and while some minor damage can add character, deep gouges or tears might require professional repair.
Risk of stains and odors: Pet accidents can stain leather and leave lingering odors. While leather is easier to clean than many fabrics, urine and other liquids can penetrate the surface if not promptly addressed, potentially causing lasting damage.
Comfort for pets: Some pets might find leather to be less comfortable compared to softer fabrics. In cold climates, leather can feel cool to the touch, while in warm climates, it can become sticky. Providing pet blankets or designated pet areas can help mitigate this.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to keep leather furniture in good condition when you have pets. This includes routine cleaning to remove pet hair and dander, as well as applying leather conditioners to maintain the material’s suppleness and prevent drying or cracking.
Protective measures: To protect leather furniture, consider using pet-friendly covers or throws. These can be easily removed and washed, providing an extra layer of protection against scratches, spills, and general wear and tear.
Options to choose from when adding leather to your interiors
There are many categories of furniture where leather upholstery is an option. One of the most popular types of leather furnishing is the leather sofa, due to leather’s comfort and malleability. Leather is also popular for many other types of chairs, such as armchairs, dining chairs, desk chairs, and even bar stools.
Leather ottomans and storage benches are also popular and stylish — not only do they provide a practical purpose in storing possessions, but they can also double as comfortable seats or footrests. Leather poufs can also be versatile accent pieces in lounges, bedrooms, and similar spaces.
Other types of leather furnishings include headboards, accent pillows, and wall coverings. Thinking outside the box, accessories like picture frames, trays, and decorative boxes can add visual interest to tabletops, shelves, and mantels.
Your other options
Before deciding on a material for the upholstery in your luxury living space, it can be worth considering the different options available. There are many luxurious, elegant materials out there.
If softness and aesthetics are your priorities, a material like velvet can add texture and sophistication and comes in many color variations. Silk, satin, chenille, jacquard, and brocade have similar advantages.
If you’re looking for something more durable for furnishings like sofas and chairs, why not opt for a durable material like leather and pair it with velvet or silk drapery or accent pieces, for example?
For warmth, softness, and durability, cashmere or mohair can be an excellent choice for throws, blankets, and pillows. Alternatively, faux fur can closely replicate the appearance and feel of real fur in a cruelty-free fashion. Last but not least, linen is known for its breathability and understated elegance.
Making the right choice for your space (and taste)
Every material has its advantages and disadvantages. When choosing the best material for your upholstery, drapers, and other furnishings, consider what your priorities are.
Some may value longevity and durability, others comfort, others intricate patterns and a wide range of colors. If in doubt, why not visit a store and see (and touch) different materials in person?

Textiles are at the heart of home furnishings, serving a dual purpose of functionality and fashion as the choice of fabric significantly influences a space, elevating aesthetics and functionality. From robust upholstery fabrics designed for durability to opulent drapery that exudes luxury, textiles can change how a house looks and feels.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Saba Kapoor, Co-Founder of Nivasa, advised, “Go for special braids and weaves, showcasing artisanal craftsmanship to elevate interiors. Apart from their practical functions, textiles act as a medium for personal expression, mirroring the homeowner’s individuality and setting the overall ambiance of the space. They have the unique ability to celebrate cultural heritage by incorporating traditional patterns or showcasing expert craftsmanship.”

She further recommended, “Opt for upholstery fabrics that boast dust-proof and spill-resistant properties, ensuring furniture stays pristine with minimal upkeep. This practicality enhances the longevity of furnishings while maintaining aesthetic appeal. Be it elegant throws, rugs or curtains, textiles play a multifaceted role in transforming a house into a home thereby enhancing the functionality and style. More often than not, textiles also also resonate with the individuality and cultural identity of its inhabitants, making the living space truly personal and inviting.”
Bringing his expertise to the same, Sachin Chauhan, Director at Dialogues by Nirmals, said, “Textiles are a way of transforming functionality to become a prominent element in home furnishing fashion. The exploration of this evolution bridges functionality and aesthetics seamlessly. The intrinsic role textiles play in elevating home décor is adding a statement look to any space. As textiles evolve, homeowners and stylists are seeking to incorporate innovative textures, patterns, and materials, turning everyday items into expressions of personal style.”
He concluded, “Textile pieces not only contribute to the overall aesthetic of living space but transform it into a curated and fashionable haven. From luxurious drapes to intricately designed cushions, the broad category of textiles is stealing the spotlight by becoming the ultimate functional source of adding interesting decor and fashion.”
