There’s more the Vegas than the bright lights of the Strip.
While it’s time to retire that now overused and cliched saying, “Whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” Las Vegas, NV, is still the epitome of decadent fun. But despite this desert town’s reputation for being a hotbed of “sin” and overindulgence, Las Vegas is more than just the Strip or the casinos that made it famous.
Las Vegas is also a home for its more than 660,000 residents (with more than 2.7 million in the greater metropolitan area). While the casino and gaming industry is, of course, big here, you’ll also find other industries in the area, including the headquarters of the Zappos shoe company.
In choosing where to live in Las Vegas, you have many options. While you can enjoy a more urban experience by living in or near Downtown, Vegas is actually a very popular location for people who love the outdoors. Beyond the welcoming and calm suburban neighborhoods you’ll find in the greater Las Vegas metropolitan area, you’ll find amazing nature. Vast state and national parks are at your beck and call for adventures, such as hiking, bouldering and rock climbing.
If you tire of casino gambling, Las Vegas has a lot more to offer. The High Roller is the second largest Ferris wheel in the world, second only to the wheel in Ain Dubai. With roomy glass gondolas that you can walk in, the High Roller is technically an “observation wheel” and sits at 550 feet tall.
You can also enjoy the Las Vegas Philharmonic, the Nevada Ballet and Broadway shows at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Other places of interest include the National Atomic Testing Museum, the Mob Museum and Zak Bagans’ The Haunted Museum.

West Las Vegas
West Las Vegas is actually more north-northwest of Downtown Las Vegas. Also known as Historic West Las Vegas or “the Westside,” this was where segregated African Americans created their own community and nightlife after being banned from enjoying the casinos they worked in during the 1930s. The area along Jackson Avenue (near MLK Boulevard) was the location of what was the “Black Strip.” The neighborhood today contains a large community center, the West Las Vegas Library, which is known for its African American Special Collection and 298-seat theater. The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District’s first dedicated Homework Help Center, all 1,540-square-feet of it, provides free print and electronic materials for K-12 students along with a computer lab and tutoring services.
