- New pets arrived at shelters this week in the Bedford area, and they are in need of homes. Every year, “6 million pets and other companion animals are surrendered to shelters … nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.” That number includes about 3.3 million dogs and 3.2 million cats as well as hundreds of pigs, birds and even horses.
