I truly appreciate a well-designed and functional lighting design with some aesthetic value. But besides these three holy grails, it also helps if the light is compact and doesn’t occupy too much precious real estate on your desk, bedside table, or wherever we place it. Besides that, a well-designed lighting fixture should not only have the ability to illuminate any living space but also add that extra oomph factor! I mean, of course, we need them to see in the dark, but as highly functional as they should be, a lighting fixture also needs to be aesthetically pleasing, adding an attractive and visually soothing element to your home or office space. And, we’ve curated a bunch of compact and exceptional lighting designs that will make excellent additions to your home.
The Sphere in Las Vegas was opened to the public last year and is now one of the most visible buildings on the north end of the Vegas Strip. It has become a sort of a meme because of its massive size, and the hilarious emoji that often looks around and interacts with different objects. YouTuber Carl Bugeja created a homemade version of the Sphere by merging a number of LEDs and some clever programming.
Called the MINI Sphere, this little light is a cute replica of the massive architectural wonder. The tiny sphere lights up, displaying varied graphics such as an eyeball, emojis faces, or even the planet Earth. It features a built-in accelerometer that detects when you lift the sphere off the table, and the sphere then makes a scared emoji face!

Meet the Japanese Lantern Candle – a soft and gentle lighting design inspired by the traditional Japanese ‘chouchin’ lantern. This lighting product features a billowy pillar shape which casts a calming and ambient aura. The lighting design is created to add some peace and tranquility to your living space, while also being quite easy to move around.
Click Here to Buy Now: $69
This candle design is designed to be a contemporary take on a beloved Japanese object. It features a tiny and minimalist ethos which doesn’t take up much space in your home. The lantern candle has a rather ethereal-looking glow which instantly puts onlookers at ease.
This portable lighting design is called the Anywhere-Use Lamp, and it is a minimalist table lamp that offers gentle lighting in a world filled to the brim with large glaring screens and harsh lighting. Featuring a mushroom-inspired head, the lamp radiates an elegant and soft glow, which creates a pleasing ambiance.
Click Here to Buy Now: $149
The Anywhere-Use Lamp has a modular form that offers impressive atmospheric enhancement, no matter where you place it. It is equipped with six high-color rendering LEDs, which provide a soothing luminescence, converting any living space into an oasis of calm and peace.
Dubbed the AwesomePre, this reading lamp was designed for the LED technology development startup MemsLux. The reading light is designed to foster an emotional connection between the reader, and his book after the sun goes down. It is shaped like a big window that you can place on the page you are reading!
The AwesomePre utilizes MemsLux’s LED tech to radiate a light wavelength which helps you to read in the dark, creating a private reading experience. It creates the experience of gazing into your favorite fictional world through a compact portal.

Dubbed the Harmony Flame Fireplace, this elegant brass lamp allows you to build a safe fire within your home. You can enjoy the experience of an outdoor fire in the comfort of your own home. It uses bioethanol to light up your home, spreading warmth within it. It was built using the same technique used to make musical instruments.
Click Here to Buy Now: $239
The fireplace was designed to elevate and uplift the mood and ambiance of indoor space. It features reflective surfaces that work with the vivid flames to create a play of shadows and lights, forming a decorative piece that is quite aesthetically appealing as well.
Say hello to the Tomori Lantern Kit – a unique kit that helps you build your own little lantern. Once you’re done using the lantern, you can easily put it aside. The lantern kit cannot be utilized as a ready-made lantern, and you can collapse it once used. A conventional flashlight can be integrated into the lantern.
Click Here to Buy Now: $39
The Tomori Lantern includes a foldable cardboard piece as the base of the kit, and as a flashlight holder, while providing structure to the lamp. It includes an LED flashlight which you can use separately when it isn’t fitted within the lamp. However, the base can support any other cylindrical flashlight as well.
Called the Port Collection, this ethereal-looking lighting collection is designed by Tom Fereday and Rakumba. It includes two shapes – the circular Round design, and a lozenge-shaped Stadium design. You can pick a tabletop or a wall-mounted version, and each variant is equipped with a solid glass block and a metal base.
The metal base offers support to the glass block which features an intriguing conical shape, marked by an internal stepped form. This rather interesting form facilitates the refraction of light when switched on, creating a mesmerizing and alluring effect that draws attention.
Called the Matin Lamp, this rather quizzical-looking lamp was designed by Inga Hempe. The lighting design is intended to be a contemporary and refreshing interpretation of a common lighting piece that utilizes a steel wire frame to condense the form to its most basic and raw. The result is a unique lamp with a design language of its own that seems quite familiar.
The Matin Lamp features a unique pleated lampshade which offers a distinctive and impressive character to the lighting product. This lampshade creates an interplay of shadows and shapes, which interestingly contrast with the plain block of color. The lamp would be a welcome addition to any home, sparking conversation and discussions.
Meet the Z Lamp, this unique lighting design is truly one-of-a-kind. It features a collapsible design which makes it portable and easy to carry about. It is equipped with a ridged silicone shade, which enables the lamp to expand or contract at will, allowing you to have complete control of the lamp’s overall brightness.
If you expand the silicone cover, the lamp serves as a large diffuser, and light is scattered in different directions. Once the lamp is contracted, the diffuser’s size reduces and the light’s intensity is diminished.
Designed by UK-based Jones and Partners, the Current Task Light is a small and compact lighting design that perfectly merges with the brand’s collection of highly functional and simple products. The Current Task Light is peak minimalism, and it serves as a valuable lighting design that occupies minimum space.
It is an award-winning task light & charging concept that serves as a multifunctional product designed to help you with your daily multitasking. The versatile and thoughtfully designed product works well in both residential and commercial spaces. It looks like an ideal addition to your workdesk!

Across several countries in West Africa, skilled artisans are hand carving furniture and accent pieces, passing down and preserving skills that are slowly being wiped away by mass production.
As the founder of the newly established Roots Décor Co., Iman Abubakar is determined to not only preserve these traditions but introduce them, along with West Africa’s cultural heritage, to a new and wider audience.
Roots Décor, which is based in Naples, Fla., offers highly carved mahogany wall panels, rocking chairs, chests, consoles, armoires and picture frames. The wood is sourced from the roofs of 80 -to 100-year-old colonial buildings that are earmarked for demolition. They are made in a factory in Lagos, Nigeria. Each piece, depending on its size and intricacy, takes about one to three months to produce (their artistry is highlighted on Instagram.) Retail prices range from about $250 for a picture frame to $7,500 for wall décor.
“We try as much as possible to make sure they are one of a kind,” Abubakar said. “We can try to reproduce a piece, but it is never exact because each piece of wood is unique.”
Roots Décor is also committed to empowering local communities. “We get underprivileged kids and kids from local communities that need help,” said Abubakar. “We get them enrolled in a training program where they shadow experienced artisans. After the one-year training program, they can stay or go off on their own.”
Abubakar arrived in Naples, where she has family members, in March, after two years of preparation and planning and just ahead of the first furniture shipment. Her initial plan was to get into furniture showrooms and work with furniture retailers and then return to Nigeria to focus on vocational training and production. “As much as it is a business, that part of it is very important to me,” she said.
But she soon discovered that this heavily carved style of furniture is a little out of step with coastal Florida, although she is confident that it is a look that people in other regions of the country would like. “This is rustic design. However, you can always use it as home accents in a more modern setting,” she said.
She has changed direction and is now reaching out to designers and selling directly to consumers online. She hopes to exhibit at High Point Market in October and might consider Las Vegas.
She is also planning a private gallery exhibition in London in August and a larger one in November with Nigerian-born painter Lanre Olagoke, who was recently awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) by King Charles. His studio and gallery are located on Regent Street. Olagoke, who overcame drug addiction to become a successful artist, founded the Art-Alive Trust which works with vulnerable young adults to develop their artistic skills.
Roots Décor is partnering with Art-Alive to provide vocational training programs.
“We believe this partnership will create lasting positive impacts on the lives of young vulnerable individuals in Nigeria, helping them find their place in society through the power of arts and craftsmanship,” Abubakar said. “We are excited about the possibilities this collaboration brings.”

Shuffling around the living room to make space for some new summer home decor is one of my favorite ways to mark the start of the season. Sometimes, the changes are small—a new scented candle here and a fresh bunch of greenery there. Other times, they’re more noticeable, like a new throw pillow for the couch or a piece of artwork for the bathroom.
Come summertime, it’s all about lightening things up with linens, florals, woven textures, and cheerful accessories. The goal for my summer home decor is to match the mood I’m in when the sun is shining and I’ve got a spicy margarita in one hand. Of course, the big investment pieces like couches, rugs, and window treatments often remain untouched. But there are plenty of little ways to bring in nods to the warmer weather and make a home feel brand-new with decor. Below, we’ve rounded up the best of the best summer home decor to make the most of the season.
Adding patterns is a foolproof way to bring fresh energy to your home, and with longer days and plenty of time outdoors ahead, that’s just the vibe we’re after. Try swapping in a patterned pillow or a fun throw on your living room couch for some extra flair.
A few extra special accessories, like a framed art print with a summer scene or a hand-painted vase for fresh flowers, can truly transform your space. Focus your attention on surfaces like coffee tables or bookshelves, which are often focal points in the room.
If a room in your house feels gloomy or unfinished, just add a plant! I used to think faux plants were a no, but after my third dead fern, I decided to embrace them, and I’ve never looked back. Pro tip: Make sure to style and zhush the branches to make them look as authentic as possible.
Come summer, you can catch us in floral printed bed sheets à la Kathleen Kelly in You’ve Got Mail until further notice. Don’t worry if flowery patterns aren’t your thing, though. There are plenty of other dreamy, lightweight summer bedding options that will give your boudoir an instant refresh—and put an end to sweating through your sheets!
Summer is high time for entertaining, and we plan to make it special with a few summery additions to our tabletop decor. All of these versatile pieces are perfectly in tune with the warm-weather season, but you can also mix them up and use them year-round to get the most bang for your buck.

If you want to update your color scheme and get the look of some of 2024’s most popular colors without painting your whole house, you’re in luck: There are plenty of projects that you can do to add some new color with just a gallon or even a quart of paint. If you’re looking for a simple DIY project to add some color to your home, here are a few ways to add 2024’s most popular colors.
Ever year, designers as well as color experts from major paint manufacturers choose a color of the year based on global trends. This year, the color palette seems to be nature-inspired, with a lot of blues, but also greens, darker black and brown tones, and some floral notes like yellow and peach.
To add color to a room without needing much paint, consider painting your door frame or window frame. For smaller frames, you should only need a quart of paint, but if you have more trim in your room, a gallon should do it. Try adding some Renew Blue from Sherwin-Williams or some Cracked Pepper from Behr to your trim to make it pop and give your color scheme a refresh. When painting trim—especially trim that is likely to be touched, like window and door frames—it’s a good idea to use semi-gloss or gloss paint to avoid damage and make it easier to clean.
If you have doors that have seen better days, you can give them a facelift with a new coat of paint. Standard sized doors without much damage might be able to be painted with a quart of paint, but if you need to do multiple coats, or if you have an oversized door, you should get a gallon, just in case. Try painting a door with Blue Nova from Benjamin Moore or Dark Auburn from Sherwin-Williams. Remember that removing a door before you paint can often make it easier to mask and will make your project go faster.
If you have metal hardware that needs a refresh, you can try spray painting it with some Krylon Bluebird. Spray painting your drawer pulls, knobs, and handles for cabinets or furniture can give you a pop of color without spending much money—just remember to use your spray paint outdoors or in another well-ventilated area. If you have wooden drawer pulls or knobs, you can try adding some peach fuzz from Pantone’s color of the year as a brush-on.
If you have a piece of furniture that needs a new coat of paint, you can incorporate a color of the year easily into your space. For most furniture, you can use a spray paint like Satin French Blue from Rust-Oleum. Just scuff up the surface a little bit with some fine grit sandpaper to make sure the paint sticks well. If you have wooden furniture that could use a boost, you can try using a sky-inspired blue like Upward from Sherwin-WIlliams to add a stripe or paint an edge. If you’re painting only a small piece, you can likely get away with just a quart of paint for this project.
With a relatively small amount of paint, you can add some detail to a floor, wall, ceiling, furniture, or really any surface big enough to hold a stencil. This project will work best on surfaces that are in relatively good shape already, and you might need to add a coat of sealer on top to make it durable for a tabletop or other high-touch areas. Use some Limitless, a buttery, floral yellow by Glidden, or any of the other colors we’ve listed and a stencil to add a colorful motif or pattern to your surface for an instant color pop that’s affordable and simple to do.

Market is always a blast, packed with days of appointments, fresh new fabrics and furniture frames and seemingly limitless inspiration. We go to pick up new products from vendors we know and love, source new merchandise, and scout out vendors we didn’t know we needed!
And while we’re doing all of these things, it’s impossible not to spot the trends as we walk through showroom after showroom. Some of them we embrace, others we enjoy from afar, and all of them we enjoy coming and going as the Markets and years go by.
I’m talking here about trends and the things we loved seeing the most at Spring 2024 Market in High Point, North Carolina.
Let’s kick things off with pastels! A throwback to the 1980s perhaps (and the ‘40s/’50s before that, and the ‘20s before that!)? A colorful yet soft palette, we saw sweet pinks, tender greens, serene blues, and gentle yellows all over market.
Within the pastels family, lavender was a standout color at Market. We spotted purples and plums frequently, but lovely lavender stole the show. Lavender started making an appearance last market and has been all over the world of fashion, but this spring it really was ubiquitous.
But if pastels are not your thing, fear not: Despite the popularity of pastels, moody palettes continued to make their bold statements, with blacks and plums reigning supreme.
Cottagecore, a personal favorite of mine, was making its soft statement all over Market. This shabby chic reincarnation, which is zero percent shabby and 100% sweetly chic, creates soft, cozy spaces often incorporating florals, checks and ticking strips along with wood detailing, woven elements like wicker, and ruffles galore. It made us feel like spending the weekend in the English countryside. The look is a welcome contrast to clean lined, low patterned contemporary spaces and prioritizes warmth and comfort over all.
Mountain Modern plays up the neutral palettes mentioned before, bringing in cool leathers, plush furs, stained woods in varied hues, and accented with black elements. Whether you’re up for a run down the mountain or just here for the apre ski, this vibe will have you feeling like you’re perched in a mountaintop chalet.
In the world of design, it’s all about the layers. Whatever your aesthetic, it’s the layers of elements that pull a space together and give it the overall feeling you want to achieve. Perhaps it’s the resurgence of cottage charm, the return of pattern on pattern in general, or just our collective love of textiles, but ruffles, pleats and fringe were seen everywhere and we couldn’t get enough of them!
Whether it’s a pleated ottoman skirt, ruffles around a bench, bed skirts (I think it’s safe to say these have made their comeback) or a canopy bed draped in layers upon layers of gorgeous fabrics, these elements soften the spaces they fill and offer opportunities to add pattern, color and oh-so-lovely layers for which we are always looking.
In the same vein, while scallops are nothing new, we spotted them being used in fun new ways, including bed frames and furniture aprons and skirting. When a space begins to feel like it’s being overrun with straight lines, a sweet scallop addition is a great way to soften things up. Commit to the curvy lines of a scalloped furniture piece, or tuck in a scalloped tray on a tabletop or ottoman for just a dash of the look.
While we’re on the subject of making old new again, canopy beds are perhaps one of the things I loved seeing most at Market, and not only because they give us just that many more surfaces onto which we can apply color and pattern and use more textiles in general. This historic concept used to serve a purpose beyond their aesthetic contributions – they kept their occupants warm and cozy in a time when central heating didn’t exist, and offered a shred of privacy when privacy could be hard to come by. Today, this style and its many variations are getting plenty of attention and I just can’t get enough.
Mural wallpapers are still going strong and encompass a variety of aesthetics. From bold colors and graphic patterns to idyllic English countryside scenes to classic chinoiserie, they all make their own kind of statement and add large-scale personality to spaces.
While we often build a room from the ground up (if we begin designing around a rug), I’ll have to end this with what we spotted on the floor: hair-on-hide rugs and traditional rugs, both in all types of spaces. Hide rugs, layered or on their own, were featured in a number of spaces, and not just those with a rustic flair. Traditional rugs were also highlighted in settings that ranged from traditional to modern, serving as fantastic foundations to all.
