An upcoming new year brings excitement for new opportunities, both big and small. The ability to reset your space by cleaning, reorganizing and decorating is one exciting venture renters can join. As you embark on the journey of refreshing your living space for the new year, don’t overlook the small yet impactful task of cleaning your baseboards— a simple step that can contribute to the overall cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of your home.
Cleaning baseboards is a simple task that not only enhances the visual appeal of your living space but also promotes a healthier indoor environment by eliminating dust and grime. We’ll help you kick off your new year on the cleanest note with this ultimate cleaning baseboards guide.
Materials needed
For those baseboards to sparkle, gather these materials. We recommend utilizing gloves as well, to protect your hands from any cleaning products.
Microfiber cloth
Sponge
All-purpose cleaner or Bucket of soapy water and white vinegar mixture (1:1 mixture)
Broom
Vacuum cleaner
Dryer sheets
Old toothbrush (optional)
Magic Eraser (optional)
How to clean baseboards: Step-by-step guide
Now that you’ve gathered your materials, it’s time to tackle those baseboards. Depending on your cleaning style, this guide is a little more meticulous; however, the satisfaction of seeing your baseboards restored will make for a worthwhile effort.
1. Remove any loose dirt
Take your broom and go over the baseboards to remove any accumulated dust or crumbs. You’ll go in for a deeper clean in the next steps, this is just to remove the loose layer of dust to get to the deeper grime. Once you’ve gone over your baseboards a few times with your broom, vacuum the surrounding floor area to clean the loosened grime.
2. Select your cleaning solution
You have a few options for this step, your selection boils down to what you have on hand. Depending on what room the baseboards you’re cleaning are in (some are dirtier than others), you may need extra strength cleaning solutions to fully remove dirt and grime, we recommend all-purpose cleaner for dirtier baseboards while soapy water and vinegar work better for standard dirt and grime.
If you have an all-purpose cleaner or cleaning wipes of any sort, you can utilize those for this step. If you’re using a spray cleaner, dilute it with a little water and utilize either a microfiber cloth or sponge for application. Wipe over the baseboards, scrubbing in circles over dirtier or grimier spots.
If you don’t have any all-purpose cleaner on hand, don’t worry. You can create a 1:1 solution of soapy water and white vinegar to work as your baseboard cleaner. Use a sponge to wipe over the baseboards, paying extra attention to any stained spots or caked-on dirt.
3. Fight tough spots with a Magic Eraser (optional)
Once you’ve done a base level of cleaning, with your cleaning method of choice, there may be spots that remain. These spots need a tougher agent to break through the dirt and grime. Use a Magic Eraser according to user instructions to scrub through these tough stains. Typically, dirtier baseboards are those that are in stain-prone rooms like entryways and kitchens.
If you don’t have this product on hand, you can utilize an old toothbrush or cotton swabs, dipped in your cleaning solution of choice, to scrub extra tough spots.
4. Dry your boards
When the boards are cleaned to your liking, take your microfiber cloth and swipe over your baseboards. This is an important step as it prevents any water damage from your baseboards.
5. Regularly maintain
Maintain clean baseboards by using a dryer sheet over them. Rubbing a dryer sheet across your baseboards prevents static which attracts dry dust. Utilizing dryer sheets is a simple way to ensure your hard work lasts.

Sound the alarm. Alert the people! Apartment 34 dove head first into the realm of DIY this week!! This is a big deal for a self professed DI-buy girl. I’ve tended to take the “lazy” way out, convinced that my creations could never be as good as anything in a store. But with help from my team, I broke out of my comfort zone and I hate to toot the ol’ horn but…, we DIY’d something that turned out so many different forms of amazing, I can hardly believe it!
I must first start with a little confession: things haven’t been as organized around here as we may have led you to believe. From hopping on a plane every week to juggling meetings and projects, let’s just say it’s a miracle I’ve even remembered to eat. Things have been shoved behind closed bathroom doors, crammed into cabinets and buried at the bottom of closets – anything to hide the growing mess.
The office closet has suffered the most. You may remember seeing it here and here, always with the doors tightly closed!! I decided it was time to practice what I preach and get back to basics with a good ol’ clean out and DIY upgrade. Here’s how it went down:
We began with the purge. Everything was cleared out and laid aside to be sorted. Hours of shredding and trips to Goodwill over the weekend and it’s like a breath of fresh air!. We went so far as to take out the closet shelves in order to give it a fresh coat of white paint, immediately making her look a million times better. However, that was just the beginning. Your closet is actually a great place to have a little fun with design. We wanted to really bring some fun personality by adding pattern so we set out on Pinterest looking for inspiration.
We came across this and loved the bold statement a stripe makes. We just decided to take it a step or two further. We sketched out our plan of doing one big 4” stripe surrounded by asymmetrical smaller ones, one 2” and 1”, on either side for a little riff on a sporty look!
Once we had our supplies in hand: ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape, paint, a handful of brushes and measuring tools, we were set! We wanted a subtle color palette so we chose Chalkboard White as our base and Benjamin Moore’s Sail Cloth as our accent with a little gold craft paint thrown in for a glam touch!
We started by finding the middle of the cabinet and marked off every six inches from top to bottom, setting where our big stripe was going to be. Starting from the top, we followed our marks, taping off the middle section. We found it easiest to just use one big piece of ScotchBlue Painters Tape. Trust your eye, if you see your line going a little crooked, double check your measuring and just lift up the tape and rework it. It’s so easy! Then simply paint inside your ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape column.
When the paint is dry to the touch about 30 mins for a single coat, lift up the tape. You’ll have a perfect stripe!
A key to making asymmetrical patterns work is to make sure you’re working with the same spacing on both sides of the middle stripe for balance. So we taped off our most outward stripe of the pattern and worked our way back in towards the middle.
During the creative process we felt like challenging ourselves even more. DIY is all about improvisation, right? So, we strayed from our original sketch a little. Thinking another gold painted stripe would be too heavy, we called an audible and used gold striped Washi tape instead!
We also decided to paint the face of each shelf to give an often overlooked detail a touch of shine and glam! We used Martha Stewart’s Metallics line in gold and really liked the reflective quality it has.
Et voila! There you have it. The perfect backdrop for a beautiful cabinet, closet, wall, dresser…the possibilities of where this look can work are endless.
Here’s a little sneak peek of the finished office supply closet! We’re so excited how the entire project turned out. You’ll just have to stay tuned for the full reveal – we promise it’s coming soon!!

DIY’s don’t have to be humongous projects that require tons of planning and take even more time to execute. In fact, a small and quick DIY can prove to be that extra facelift needed to take something from good to gorgeous! Case in point: our 10-minute candle makeover perfect for the level one DIY’er such as ourselves!!
For the holiday scene we created for Martha Stewart Living, the fresh garland on the fireplace was really the centerpiece of the room. It is the focal point after all. We knew we wanted to keep the rest of the vignette relatively clean, so we decided to simply dot pillar candles along the mantel, just for that added dose of ambiance. We picked up super inexpensive gray and white tapers sold individually as well! from CB2. They looked nice at different heights due to the varying antique brass candlesticks and a couple of modern candleholders that we used, but the candles ended up feeling plain. Compared with the rest of the scene they fell a little short on the amazing scale.
So, we went into our growing! craft drawer and pulled out the two magic DIY makeover tools that can instantly upgrade what seems to be anything in the world: metallic craft paint and Washi tape.
Here’s how we created our look:
Step 1: For the sporty chic looking candles, apply washi tape to create stripes, reminiscent of baseball tees or varisty jackets. Wrap your tape towards the top of the candlestick about 1/2 inch to an inch down.
Step 2: For more holiday inspired candles, start your washi tape at an angle at the top of the candle and twirl all the way down, making candy cane like swirls.
Step 3: For the ombre effect, take a copper paint we love this metallic paint that we also used here! and apply a thick coat around the base of the candle.
Step 4: Paint upwards towards the wick until the brush has no more wet paint. Try not to continually add more paint. The key is to apply indiviual long strokes that achieve a really smooth and gradual fade effect. They dry in minutes! Simply start from the opposite end of the candle to create an ombre effect from the wick down.
And voila, you’re done!
This is a seriously quick makeover that you can create, even right before your holiday guests come over. It personalizes ordinary candles and just adds that extra layer of gorge to your holiday decor!

Having the office done is Such. A. Relief. From day one, I set out to create a space that would really help get the team’s creative juices flowing. I wanted ideas to literally bounce off the white walls. But trying to stay minimal can be a bit tricky – design is very much in the details when every piece counts. And when you’re working on a budget making the perfect choices definitely took more time than expected!
But as promised, we’re breaking down some of those details today and over the next couple of weeks!, first focusing on the upgrades to the walls. We found affordable, simple and most importantly fun ways to really make the space feel brand new!
We spend the vast majority of our time glued to screens, so I really wanted to capture wall space for old school inspiration. I used to have boxes and boxes of magazine tears, people – that I moved cross country…twice! As we worked on the redesign, we always kept our eyes peeled for new and interesting ways to display pieces of tangible, physical inspiration. That hunt became the source for our most economical DIY yet! Can you guess what it was??
We’d been seeing metal grates pop up all over our fave Scandinavian blogs, so we decided to try and make one ourselves! A simple trip to the hardware store yielded the perfect large scale wire grating for $7! To take it a little beyond junk yard chic, we simply laid it down on some cardboard and spray painted it white. Now it simply hangs from picture hooks. We call it our modern pin board and we’re all obsessed.
The grate is the perfect solution for an awkward wall space that needs some visual interest it hangs on this weird blank spot right before you enter the bathroom!. It adds texture and interest all on its own, but we use it to hang styling ideas for upcoming shoots, odd knick knacks and our favorite art for a seriously cool 3-D statement!
Since half of the team is facing a wall when sitting at our new co-working desk the now iconic Strut Table from Blu Dot, btw!, we needed something inspiring to look at there too. Instead of doing a typical gallery wall, we loved the idea of creating a rotating inspiration shelf. With acrylic clipboards from Muji they proved more economical than these gorgeous ones from Russel & Hazel! and a simple picture rail, we have a chic and quickly interchangeable moodboard to display our most recent magazine musings!
In our book, no office is complete without a bar and we wanted ours to be a highlight of the space! We started out by creating a black statement wall painted with Flat Silhouette by Martha Stewart Living for The Home Depot. Keeping with the minimal style, we floated a clean-lined Ikea console with white lacquer doors and Ikea-hacked it with a customized black surface aka $10 black contact paper purchased on Amazon! Then we brought in one major piece of artwork. This is an especially meaningful piece, as we commissioned our very own Editorial Director to make it! Bianca recently discovered this stunning hidden talent you may remember the piece she did in her own living room here! and her gorgeous abstract ink on canvas really brought the wall to life inquire about your own piece here!.
When it came to lighting, we didn’t have the luxury of installing a “major moment” over our new desk due to a concrete ceiling, so we figured out how to work with the tracking lighting that was already there. We used a simple custom brass pendant made by studioPGRB! to make a stunning, singular statement. We also added a monochromatic black wall sconce by OneFortyThree to instantly upgrade our lighting game!
Finally, we created a mini-gallery moment in our “creativity corner.” Still wanting to keep things as uncluttered as possible, we focused on four art pieces all with a similar color palette and gold frames. The two new ones are original works by fave artist Jennifer Ament and the last little detail is simply a hand-painted watercolor card that we slapped up, unframed, but it totally rounded out the moment. The fresh combo made us fall in love with our favorite art piece from the original design all over again – our Life Magazine image of Vegas showgirls playing chess backstage! J’adore.
That’s detail on just a few of our favorite mini moments around the office. We hope you can see how the simplest changes can have the biggest impact on a room. Next week we’ll break down the creativity corner, the supply closet remember our most popular DIY to date! and what’s on our prop shelves! Stay tuned.

We all know celebrities for their silver-screen performances and their larger-than-life personas. But we don’t always realize that some famous faces have been involved in shockingly horrific acts of crime. From serious misconduct to premeditated murder, these are the stories of thirteen particularly infamous celebrity criminals whose shocking misdeeds created a media sensation.
1. Mark Wahlberg
One user commented, “Mark Wahlberg, lol.”
Another Redditor replied, “Honestly, it disgusts me every time. I wonder how that man still has a career.”
A user added, “It’s mystifying how the general public doesn’t realize. I’m guessing a lot of PR + white/male privilege from the media (Winona’s reputation was tarnished for shoplifting, etc.).”
“Don’t forget how Redditors rush to defend him every time he’s brought up in these ‘What are the most awful celebrities?’ AskReddit threads they have every single day. He’s white and is in movies they like, so he’s absolved immediately of everything. The posts are usually the same pathetic Reddit defense, like: ‘Yes, he was a literal neonazi who has maimed people for life, but I’m sure Mark has changed and has to live with his past actions.’” another user responded.
One commenter replied, “One of his victims has ‘forgiven’ him, so people use that to defend him and say he’s reformed. When in truth, the victim could have forgiven him and moved on with their lives. They never said they excused his behavior.”
One of the users posted, “Here’s a snippet from an article: ‘In 1986, a then 15-year-old Wahlberg and three friends were charged with chasing three black children and pelting them with rocks while yelling [racist slurs] until an ambulance driver intervened.’ There’s more outlined in this article.”
One user also added, “To add to this: only [apologized] so he could get his conviction pardoned so that he could get a liquor license for his restaurant—felons can’t have liquor licenses.”
2. Bella Hadid
One user posted, “Bella Hadid.”
Another commenter asked, “What did she do?”
“She had a DUI that she blamed on her Chronic Lyme IIRC,” one Redditor added.
Another commented, “Yeah, and she was 17 at the time—the leaked email her mom Yolanda sent to Bella regarding the DUI & her dirty/messy car lives in my head rent free.”
3. Ian Watkins
One Redditor commented, “Not a widely known celebrity but used to be quite famous back in the day: Ian Watkins, lead singer of LostProphets. Imo he’s the worst one, no one else compares to his crimes.”
One user added, “I cannot urge anyone and everyone enough NOT to read the details of this. An absolute monster of the lowest form.”
Another user replied, “For real that man is legit a monster; the details really do just get worse and worse the more you read it’s flabbergasting. sent chills down my spine when I remembered LP being on the Warped Tour lineup the very first year I went as a tween.”
One commenter shared, “I used to be a true crime writer and have had to read the absolute goriest, most horrific things you could imagine, and the Ian Watkins court transcripts were the worst thing I’ve ever read—and I didn’t even make it past the first page!”
4. Reese Witherspoon
One user posted, “Reese Witherspoon being arrested for disorderly conduct and pulling the whole ‘Do you know who I am?’ with the cops.”
Another user commented, “I don’t know how she’s still considered ‘America’s Sweetheart’ after that. Props to her PR team, I guess.”
One commenter replied, “Every Karen thinks of herself as ‘America’s Sweetheart,’ so it tracks.”
Another user shared, “This one lives rent free in my mind. I love that video, lol.”
One user concluded, “American citizen, Reese Witherspoon.”
5. Travis Scott
One Redditor posted, “Travis Scott’s Astroworld tragedy, they changed the focus of people by showing the drama of Kanye, Kim and Pete. So many people died and he got away from a lot of attention and bad PR. I think he’s touring or something nowadays.”
Another user added, “While he is still touring, he’s facing multiple lawsuits and I think people need to understand that the legal system takes time when they say that he got away with it.”
One user replied, “I believe the lawsuits were filed in civil court so unfortunately he has a loophole in saying he hasn’t been charged with a crime yet. but hopefully the civil suit will pave the way for him being charged in the future because he was definitely liable for what happened at Astroworld.”
Another commenter exclaimed, “He should have been banned from touring at all. He had similar incidents in the past, and was warned along with his team about the concert and how dangerous it was so many times. They went ahead and did it anyway and he fueled the fire at the concert afterwards. He was terrible and deserves at least some jail time. I feel disgusted whenever I hear about him. He also seemed remorseless. I watched Martin Garrix’s vlogs and he almost had to stop a concert over such an issue with his recent shows in Latin America because the crowd was slowly starting to crush itself.”
6. Tim Allen
One Redditor shared, “Tim Allen was busted with [possession of drugs] in the 70’s…2 years in jail.”
“That’s because he snitched on literally everybody,” one user answered.
Another user replied, “I always post this but the craziest thing about that is that he didn’t get arrested at an airport because he was transporting it via plane, he was arrested there because he had arranged the drug deal to take place at the airport. Who does a drug deal at an airport!?”
7. Allison Mack
One user shared, “Allison Mack and the s*x cult NXIVM.”
“Omg apparently she’s in prison!! I’m actually surprised she wasn’t just let off with a slap on the wrist with the amount of money and vaguely influential people involved that sounds like some… some high stakes scumbag NYC lawyer might be able to buy you out of,” another user replied.
One user added, “That is a slap on the wrist. The leader of the cult will spend the rest of his life in prison.”
One user also responded, “In fairness, Allison Mack was one of 8 ‘first line’ DOS members. Lauren Salzman was also charged and given probation, but six women who committed the same crimes weren’t charged at all. Nicki Clyne is out culting around the US as a free woman despite being an illegal immigrant who committed immigration fraud. The woman who did the branding is free. The only [NXIVM] members who got higher sentences than Allison Mack were Raniere, Claire Bronfman, and Nancy Salzman. Mack’s celebrity probably made her seem disproportionately culpable.”
8. Ezra Miller
One Redditor commented, “Ezra Miller.”
Another user added, “Lawd, that child needs help.”
9. Martha Stewart
One user commented, “Martha Stewart.”
Another user replied, “I love how after prison her and Snoop became best friends. Such a humble ending.”
Another user added, “It really is endearing.”
10. Shakira
“Shakira, Shakira,” one Redditor shared.
Another Redditor asked, “What was her crime? Am OOTL.”
Another commenter answered, “Tax Evasion.”
One user added, “Good old tax evasion.”
11. Errol Flynn
One user replied, “Yuck. Yuck yuck yuck. Another guy to add to the statutory [sexual assault] list. And another addition to the ‘women and girls are lying’ scorecard…”
12. Vince Neil
One Redditor commented, “Vince Neil. He was measured at having a blood alcohol level (at time of testing) of .17 after getting into a high-speed accident that killed the passenger of his car and severely injured the people in the other car in the accident (both had severe injuries and brain damage). He had to do community service, pay over $2 million in damages and spent a little over two weeks in jail for this.”
13. Jimmy Saville
One user commented, “Anybody mention Jimmy Saville yet? (TW if you decide to Google).”
The OP replied, “I’m in the states, so I wasn’t super familiar with this guy. Watched the Netflix documentary on him and he was a genuine monster.”
Another added, “Absolutely vile. And he was so incredibly well connected he was basically untouchable. Those kids were failed by everybody.”

We don’t know about you, but for a couple of years now it seems like we’re pulling fewer and fewer of our Christmas decorations out of storage. I don’t know if it’s just the modern decor trend sinking in deeper or if it’s that the minimal lifestyle is feeling ever more appealing. Whatever the reason, the Scandinavian approach to Christmas is so attractive this year. They somehow get it just right. So with only a couple of boxes of ornaments out of storage and streamlined trimmings on our mind, we DIY’d the cutest birch branch Christmas tree you ever did see- a great alternative to the 9-footer and the perfect festive element for tight quarters! It’s so simple and super cute, even if you are decking the halls with 50 pounds of holly, you’ll want to add it to your home this season!
We love, love, LOVE, simple moments like a sweetly sparse potted tree on the stairs or simple white paper bags wrapped in twine and hung with clothespins for an advent calendar – even live trimmings ’round a homemade candle chandelier. So cozy chic!
Our holiday inspiration is coming straight from Copenhagen right now; craftiness meets chic simplicity. Their secret is a neutral palette: blacks, whites and soft greys, mixed in with natural elements like branches, tree trimmings and small potted evergreens, and lots of texture: think burlap, rope and twine. Mix them all togehther and your Scandi-inspired Christmas is complete!
With these inspirations as our guide, and some help from the DIY queen herself, Martha Stewart, we took to DIYing our version of a modern Scandinavian inspired Christmas tree- no water or vacuuming of pine needles required! We put a slightly more glam spin on Scandi with a mix of metallic ornaments as well as some matte white baubles which were also a DIY!.

> Measure, mark and cut birch tree branches with saw. Bottom branch is 30 inches, then go in increments of 6 inches: 24, 18, 12, your top branch will be 6 inches.
> Lay branches out in shape of Christmas tree, longest branch on bottom, shortest on top with about 8 inches in between each branch. Wrap strong twine around bottom branch three-four times, knot it, then wrap it around next branch, knot it and cut. Repeat for all branches.
> Coat desired ornaments with matte white spray paint. Repeat process until fully covered.
> Cut 6 inch pieces of Butcher’s Twine and string through ornaments and tie on branches.
> Hang tree using fishing line and a 3M hook to your wall! Perfectly thin for a hallway, impactful enough for a corner in the living room and so cute for the kitchen!
> Keep a small bowl and sharpie by the tree and whenever you think of a Christmas wish, write it down on a gift tag and hang it on the tree! They could be something special to read on Christmas morning as a family. And ta-da!
The muted champagne, mocha and silver color palette of the ornaments there are so many options to choose from here! blends in so naturally against the textured white bark of the birch tree branches.
