“Do you remember that scene in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby when Daisy Buchanan is first introduced, and the numerous sheer, white curtains are dreamily streaming in the room? Well, when I want to escape reality for a bit, that’s where I would mentally love to be transported to. Since I don’t live in a mansion on the bay though, and instead have four roommates, my personal way of creating this vision for myself was by hanging up sheer, lightweight curtains in my bedroom. Gauzy curtains like these allow in the perfect amount of diffused natural light, and when I open up my windows, the gentlest of breezes blow them into my room. Though it doesn’t look like Daisy’s enviable sitting area, the sight always makes me feel lighter.”
In the mid 1930s, legendary Vogue editor in chief Diana Vreeland began writing a column for Harper’s Bazaar called Why Don’t You? in which she would encourage readers to try something new, almost as an absurdly glamorous dare. Among her suggestions was the idea that readers might decorate their homes entirely in green, with a verdant mix of houseplants and glazed porcelain. But Vreeland’s personal favorite color was red, specifically “the color of a child’s cap in any Renaissance portrait.”
In 1955, she asked interior designer Billy Baldwin to create her famed New York apartment, which was completed in 1957 and later featured in the September/October 1975 issue of Architectural Digest. The living room, which Vreeland enthusiastically described as “a garden in hell,” is a master class in the art of monochromatic design. It’s not just that the room is all red: It’s that Baldwin and Vreeland combined red carpet, red upholstery, and red paint with objects that are culturally red, like playing cards and plaid throws. (Vreeland herself made the needlework pillows on the sofa.)
From the frescoes at Villa of the Mysteries near Pompeii to the walls of the Louvre to the White House’s Red Room, red conveys a certain storied, regal grandeur like no other hue. AD spoke to designers with distinctly different aesthetic points of view about a color they all love, and asked them to make the case—and share their tips—for the all-red room.
Ashley Hicks, the color-forward British designer and son of David Hicks, recalls that his father had a “flashing red” dining room in his country house in the early 1960s. Years later, at Salone del Mobile in 2022, the younger Hicks designed a red tented room for Buccellati, festooning a dining space with a sumptuous Turkish chintamani-patterned textile and pedestals, hand-painted to resemble red porphyry. Hicks points out that there’s a strong association between red and libraries, from the walls to the books, “particularly in neoclassical and Victorian libraries,” he notes. “One of my father’s great ambitions was to get all his books rebound in red,” he adds. (Hicks reports that his father got about 30 of them done.)
Miles Redd’s AD100 firm Redd Kaihoi also appreciates the shade’s bookish appeal and once designed a deep red library, in addition to using copious amounts of it in other projects over the years. “The thing that no one ever really tells you is that red rooms, they’re nighttime rooms, they’re for the evening, they’re for fires, they’re for softly lit silk shades. And there’s something so enveloping, rich, and wonderful about being in a red room at night with a fire going. It’s just kind of magical.”
Crosby Studio’s Harry Nuriev recently tapped into the nocturnal vibe at the New York outpost of the exclusive members club Silencio, where he put a slick, contemporary spin on the all-red genre. (The otherworldly space was partly inspired by the chic weirdness of David Lynch’s design for Twin Peaks—think Sherilyn Fenn’s lip color and the iconic bright red curtain). Looking at historic nightclub architecture and design, Nuriev found red to be the most evocative hue. “For me, [red] is the color of the 1960s and Studio 54,” he tells AD PRO.
At the new Google Visitor Experience, which opened at the company’s Gradient Canopy campus in Mountain View in October, you can, as you might expect, check out the Google Store, full of the latest tech products and branded Google merch. But nearby, tucked next to a cafe and community space, is a quite different type of store. Here, quirky, handmade art, home decor, skin care products, jewelry and much more are on display – from scented candles to crochet keychains.
This is the MOMENT Marketplace pop-up shop, showcasing the work of more than 75 Bay Area indie makers with a theme that changes every three months. The pop-up is curated and operated by the team behind San Jose Made (SJMADE), which has a long history of working with artists and small businesses (the MOMENT brand also operates several micro-retailer projects in San Jose.)
Featured now is the Clay & Craft Pop-up Shop, highlighting clay-based goods as well as other products featuring “natural and Earth elements,” which will be up through April 22, according to MOMENT project coordinator Audrey Yeung.

‘Unabashedly feminine’: Little Shop of Florals
Erin Salazar’s “unabashedly feminine” work – stylized, colorful florals, often against bold black backgrounds, hand-painted on candles, earrings and even vinyl records – immediately stands out amongst the MOMENT Marketplace offerings, with each piece one of a kind.
“My work in that context revolves around this particular type of folk painting called one-stroke floral painting, a technique that is largely used in the decorative arts” (such as on bowls, plates and other decorated utilitarian objects), said Salazar, who is also a muralist. She paints with awareness of and appreciation for the generations of uncredited female artisans who came before her.
“Women’s work has not historically been valued in the way men’s has,” she noted, so for her, “the essence of the work is rooted in paying homage to the anonymous women who helped define visual culture through the decorative arts.”
The technique also helps her keep up an active painting practice even when life gets hectic. In addition to being a working artist, Salazar is the executive director of the San Jose-based arts nonprofit Local Color (which, among many other endeavors, hosts community art-making experiences at the Google Visitor Experience).
“I just like to paint a whole lot,” she said, but since she’s extremely busy, “I need something that goes fast, that’s rewarding immediately.”
She sees the “little commodifiable goods” she makes for spaces like MOMENT Marketplace under the name Little Shop of Florals as creating “an entry point into seeing my bigger, more expressive studio and gallery-related work,” she said.
“It’s been really wonderful to watch our businesses grow at the same point,” she said of San Jose Made and Local Color, “doing the good work of keeping the creative community going.”

LED light strips give Bilal the ick because they tend to look cheap, when that is not the desired effect. “They do not look expensive, they don’t look high-end, they don’t feel like elevated decor,” he says. “They literally just feel like you ordered an LED strip off Amazon and stuck it to your wall. And that’s exactly what it is.”
Vivien of Posh Pennies is particularly averse to battery-operated sconces, detesting the fact that they require remotes and batteries, and that they eventually stop getting used because they require recharging. “If you’re serious about where you want your light, then get it wired, pop in a smart bulb, put it on a schedule, and call it a day! So worth it,” the interior design blogger and YouTuber explains. Bilal agrees that smart light bulbs are a much better alternative, especially if you’re looking for the ability to easily change the mood of a room with lighting.
Focusing on the screen, rather than the big picture of your space
As sharing interior design on social media gains more and more traction, and we become accustomed to seeing beautiful rooms on the reg, it can be tempting to focus only on what looks good onscreen. Imani Keal, a design blogger who specializes in renter-friendly decor and DIY, often wonders what’s going on beyond the frame of a quirky DIY space she sees on TikTok. “They sometimes don’t show the project in the context of the rest of the room or apartment, and it’s often because that project only looks good from one angle or as a vignette,” she explains.
It’s important to make sure a fun project actually works with the rest of your living space, rather than just conforming to the latest trend. “The purpose of creating a beautiful space is so that it looks and feels warm and welcoming in real life and on the internet, not just in five-second clips,” she adds. Garrett Le Chic fully agrees. As an interior designer, he’s all about making updates to your home that are consistent with its architecture.
“Renovating to change the style of your house in the long term doesn’t always make the most sense because it just requires a lot more effort, a lot more money, a lot more work than is really necessary,” he says. “When, if you took the core elements, the backbone of what the architectural style of your house is, and you apply that, it works better in the long term.”
Bland dust-collecting decor
There’s nothing like a good knickknack or piece of art to really liven up a room. With so many affordable online and brick-and-mortar home-goods stores, it’s easier than ever to find what you need to add in a space. This is both a blessing as a curse, as it means that now more than ever, there’s a plethora of mass-produced items with no personality taking up space and collecting dust over time.
On the subject of word art, Phoenix has one question: “Who is buying this?” He continues, “I know the ‘Live, Love, Laugh’ signs of the early 2000s have faded out, but now it’s like very weird quotes on boards that people are spending between 10 and 20 dollars on. The amount of staged homes that I’ve seen from real estate agents that have those too.”
The disco ball, while always beautiful, has undergone a glow-up in the 21st century. No longer relegated to the nightlife scene that birthed it, the mirrorball crept into our weddings, our homes, our earlobes. Then it escaped its spherical form entirely—now martini glasses, cowgirl boots, even mushrooms gleam with silver-tiled radiance. What could they possibly disco next?
Sofie Berarducci has some ideas.
The 24-year-old entrepreneur honed her design savvy building furniture in her parents’ garage during the pandemic. When she returned to college in San Francisco, she had to settle for smaller projects. One night, while watching The Bachelor, she and a handful of friends covered a Styrofoam mushroom from Michaels in shiny, mirrored tiles. “Anytime someone would come over and see it in my room, they’d love it,” Berarducci recalls. “It was such a showstopper.”
After graduating in 2019, Berarducci started crafting more disco mushrooms as Christmas presents. She posted surplus ’shrooms on Facebook Marketplace, where they sold out overnight. “People were messaging me, ‘Where can I buy more?’” Berarducci recalls.
Berarducci capitalized on the disco fever with an Etsy shop and, eventually, a business account on Instagram. She developed new products, pivoting from Styrofoam bases to 3D-printed fruit, liquor bottles, and other fun shapes. Berarducci was still working full-time at a San Diego marketing agency, running her side hustle with help from family. “In the morning, my mom and I would pack orders together, go drop them off at UPS, and go do our nine-to-five,” she says. “Five would hit, and we would turn on a movie and get to tiling.”
Six months in, she decided to launch the brand’s e-commerce site and quit her job to focus on Sofiest Designs. “It was kind of a huge risk,” she adds, “but I haven’t looked back.” After all, the gamble paid off handsomely: In addition to 80,000 Instagram followers, Sofiest Designs boasts partnerships with Urban Outfitters, Free People, Dormify, and Aerie. Berarducci has designed custom disco doodads for celebs such as Lizzo, Kourtney Kardashian, and Shania Twain, and outlets like Architectural Digest, HGTV, Apartment Therapy, and Time have taken notice.
Though her company ships out 15 to 20 orders per day, Berarducci continues to hand-make each product in a San Marcos warehouse with the help of a small team of family and friends. “My business is part e-commerce manufacturer and part art,” she explains. “It’s still really time intensive. I’m touching every single [piece].”
All those hours tiling haven’t stopped her from pushing Sofiest Designs forward. She added additional, less shiny homewares in the form of surreal shelving and pastel lamps and partnered with other woman-owned small businesses to expand the company’s e-commerce offerings. Nevertheless, what Berarducci calls “disco therapy” remains core to her company’s ethos. “The disco ball is timeless and gorgeous, but it hadn’t been remodeled in, like, 50 years,” she says. “We wanted to make something more appropriate for Gen Z. Our goal is to make disco items that double as art for your home that you can have forever.”

Perera says that evaluating the air quality is her first move when starting a project. She favors using a whole-house air purification system to remove dust, chemicals, and mold/mycotoxins from the air. “I’m partial to IQAir,” she offers, “because it’s the only company I have found to filter particles down to .003 microns, whereas most others are .3 or .03. That extra level of filtration makes all the difference in air quality for sensitive individuals.”
Designer Lonni Paul, who suffers from allergies herself, also opts for hospital-grade IQAir high-performance purifiers to remove allergens from the air, as does Doykhen, who further appreciates Dyson and Molekule for their sleek and stylish options. Her favorite solution, however, is a whole-house system like Zehnder, which attaches to ducting.
“Proper ventilation throughout the home helps reduce indoor humidity and prevents mold growth,” says Garcia, who adds air purifiers with HEPA filters in bedrooms and offices and deploys exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms. “Installing window screens is a great trick for keeping outdoor allergens from entering the space. I also tend to avoid heavy drapery and choose light washable curtains instead.”

Doykhen concurs on the last point, and opts for roller shades in her projects. “If clients prefer curtains,” Doykhen notes, “I would recommend washable, organic hypoallergenic textiles.”
Adding some greenery can help too. “Plants such as ferns, snake plants, and aloe vera are known for their ability to remove indoor air pollutants,” says Garcia—and don’t require a green thumb to maintain.
Avoid common irritants
Formaldehyde, a common allergic bugbear that often crops up in building materials, furniture, flooring, or textiles, should also be on designers’ radars. “Thankfully, in the last five years there has been a premium placed on low-VOC and formaldehyde-free products,” explains Christa O’Leary of Home in Harmony Designs. “For my first layer of defense, I always look for products that are GreenGuard Certified,” she says, an indication that the product has few to no volatile organic compounds.
“Insulation materials such as gas blocks or foam can also be harmful,” Yakusha says, adding that it is crucial to inquire about the materials used in every home’s construction—the fewer materials emitting formaldehyde, the better. She advocates for walls constructed from clay-based materials and natural plasters, using natural elements like wood, wicker, clay, and ceramics, and specifying parquet or microcement for flooring. (Vinyl or linoleum coatings should be avoided.) “Be cautious of using materials like artificial stone, which may contain harmful substances,” she warns. “While it may not always be feasible to surround yourself with entirely natural products, strive to minimize exposure to artificial materials.”
O’Leary says that when a client has allergies in general, “we assume that this includes a sensitivity to dust particles,” which can easily get caught in fabric and carpeting. Going low-“fluff,” as she calls it—especially in bedrooms—can prevent accumulation of irritants in areas where occupants may face exposure. In bedrooms, Perera goes for nontoxic mattresses and sheets, as well as non-upholstered bed frames (metal or wood being go-tos). “We spend so much time in our bedrooms that minimizing chemical and dust exposure during this time is critical,” she says, noting that her firm is partial to Loom and Leaf mattresses and Tencel sheets.
What’s a fair price to pay for mouthwash, soap, body wash, and toothpaste? One TikToker is in shock at their total from Target when buying these items and voiced their concerns about the affordability of basic essentials.
In the video, Steve Owens (@iamsteveowens) is in their car telling viewers about their recent Target visit. They mention that their total price for these essentials was $35, which averages out to about $8.75 per item. They also mention that everything in the store is locked up and that the self-checkout is no longer an option, allegedly due to the store’s concerns about theft. They go on to explain that people are stealing out of necessity, not as a hobby.
“Y’all, people are not stealing because it’s fun. People are stealing because they have to. If you look at what’s locked up—it’s soap, deodorant, toothpaste, mouthwash, body wash. These are essential items, OK? They didn’t lock up the home goods stuff in there,” Owens states about the items at Target.
The video has over 16,000 likes and over 144,000 views since April 10 at 9pm ET.
Owens goes on to contextualize the total of the items based on the average minimum wage in the United States.
“Y’all, people are struggling—that is why folks are stealing. This is $30, OK? Minimum wage in the United States of America, on average, is $11 an hour. You have to trade three hours of your life. Think about this, y’all. You gotta trade three hours of your life for mouthwash, toothpaste. I’mma show it to you again—soap and body wash. This is three hours of your life that you have to trade, and you ain’t never get it back,” Owen states about the Target purchase.

While some sources say the accurate average for minimum wages across the United States is $9.00, the federal minimum wage is lower than this at $7.25 an hour for nonexempt employees, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
People in the comments began to echo their concerns as well.
“Trading your life (work) for items is insane to say…. lordt… that just changed the way I see things,” one comment reads.
“Between essential items and groceries it’s ridiculous,” another wrote. The Daily Dot has previously written about people being overwhelmed by the price of groceries as well.
“Corporate greed,” commented another.
It seems that Owens is not the only one fed up with the price of items nowadays. The Daily Dot has reached out for comment to Target via email and Owen via TikTok comment.

For all my decorating life, decades, I thought animal prints were for other people. Although I coveted the exotic look of a leopard-print throw or a tiger-striped rug, I lacked the courage to put one in my home.
That was then.
I now have two zebra-striped chairs in my living room. With the blessing of a designer I trust, I tapped the animal within. Now I wonder what took me so long.
My odyssey began a few months ago when I looked at my adjoining dining and living rooms and decided they looked tired. I wanted to update them, make them come alive, but I couldn’t afford to start over.
So, I called Christopher Grubb, a notable designer based in Los Angeles whom I’ve known for years, and asked for a consult. I would do all the legwork, if he could just tell me what to keep, get rid of, add and revamp. We agreed I would keep the traditional dining table, but replace the stodgy tapestry dining side chairs, which I’ve had for nearly 30 years, with more modern ones.
We would also keep the two dining room armchairs but reupholster them in a more contemporary fabric and move them into the living room. I’m loving this plan.
I gathered nine fabric swatches to test drive. I sent photos of all nine to Grubb. Then, before he could answer, I narrowed the selection down to six and sent him a picture of the finalists. Among the three fabrics I’d eliminated was a bold zebra print I grabbed on a whim but ruled out. (It’s for other people.)
“What happened to the zebra?” Grubb asked.
“Oh, it seemed a little, well, wild.”

“It would look fantastic on those chairs,” he said. “And paint the wood glossy lacquer black.”
Designers take risks where the rest of us fear to tread.
My little heart turned a somersault. “Really?” That permission felt like the time my Dad let me drive our family’s red Dodge Charger by myself.
Next day, the tired tapestry armchairs along with seven yards of zebra fabric and I were exuberantly off to the upholsterer, who took one look at the project, raised his eyebrows and said: “That will be fun.”
When the chairs came back, I sent Grubb a photo.
“Dang! Those look great!”
I had to agree.
“You just created art chairs,” he said. “You turned them into not just useful pieces of furniture, but pieces of art.”
Many homeowners have furniture pieces that would look great flipped, he added, they just don’t see it. “They have heavy Mediterranean furniture that they are trying to bust out of to make their homes more contemporary, but don’t think the pieces belong going forward. Then we give it a twist. Maybe we paint a humdrum brown end table robin’s egg blue and turn it into a fun and functional accessory.”
If they’re worried they will “ruin” the piece, he says, “You don’t like it anymore as it is, so what’s to lose?”
“I’m a big fan of doing what you did,” said Dean Stills, co-owner of Stills Upholstery in Longwood. “I love to see people repurpose old furniture to make it fit their homes today by recovering it with more-modern fabric and changing the finish. It’s so much better than taking it to the curb.”
Grubb encourages anyone who wants to take a risk with their décor to go for it, but to bounce it off a designer first. “Most people know what they like, they just don’t know how to get there. We can help them add the wow factor.”
He encourages DIY decorators to work with designers like I did. “Do the legwork, then hire a designer to consult for an hour or two,” he said. “People don’t take risks, so we walk through room after room of beige and grey.”
None of us wants to be that person.
If you’d like to add some pizzazz to your home, here are some risky moves Grubb and Stills suggest you consider.
Use the power of paint. A glossy fun color on a dull brown piece of wood furniture is an inexpensive way to modernize it and turn it into an art piece. (It’s also easier than refinishing.) Consider painting a chest glossy lime or the frame of a mirror bright orange. When painting my wood chairs gloss black, Stills usedCrystal Conversion Varnish because it creates a tough, hard finish that holds up.
Change the hardware. Switching out distressed iron knobs or ornate vintage pulls for sleek ones in brushed gold or polished chrome can instantly and inexpensively enliven old furniture.
Refresh fabrics. Before retiring a piece of upholstered furniture, think about recovering it with an updated fabric. Older furniture, Stills said, is typically much better made than newer furniture sold today. Upholsterers can also replace and repair worn inner springs and foam.
Add a wow fixture. Chandeliers are a great place to take an expressive risk, Grubb said. “These standalone accessories don’t have to go with anything. They could be covered in feathers and look great.”
Incorporate some Lucite. Because it leans contemporary, just one Lucite piece, such as a chair, end table or bar cart can bridge old and new looks, Grubb said.
Mix in some metal. Shiny metallic finishes also feel contemporary. Adding chrome table lamps, bookends or side tables can modernize an otherwise traditional room.
Reframe the art. Traditional art doesn’t need a traditional frame. Put an old painting in a contemporary frame or eliminate the frame altogether.
