Do you want to learn how to start a travel blog?
Starting a travel blog can be a fun journey that combines your love for travel and writing. You have the chance to share your adventures, tips, and personal stories with a wide audience.
Starting a blog changed my life. When I began Making Sense of Cents (the blog that you’re reading right now!), I had no idea that sharing my writing would lead to financial freedom and the ability to work from anywhere.
For nearly a decade, I’ve traveled full-time – by RV, sailboat, and plane – and it’s been an incredible way to live. Along the way, I’ve shared my experiences, travel tips, and stories, and it’s allowed me to connect with fellow travelers from all over the world.
Whether you want to turn it into a business, a career, or just a fun hobby, a travel blog lets you connect with other travelers and inspire them to explore new places.
Creating a travel blog doesn’t need to be expensive. With some basic steps, you can set up your blog and start sharing your travel experiences in no time. This guide will help you understand what you need to get started, from choosing a domain name to setting up your website and reaching your first readers.
Quick note: I have a free How To Start A Blog FREE Course you can click here to join. Join over 80,000 people who have already taken the course. Want to see how I built a $5,000,000 blog? In this free course, I show you how to create a blog, from the technical side to earning your first income and attracting readers.
My background with blogging
Over a decade ago, I started my blog, Making Sense of Cents, without much planning. I stumbled upon an article about a blogger and thought it would be fun to share details about my own life. At first, it was just a hobby with no real expectations.
I didn’t even realize you could make money from blogging back then. But around six months in, a blogger friend introduced me to my first advertiser, and I earned $100. That’s when I really started to see the potential.
Since then, my blog has grown far beyond anything I could’ve imagined, and I’ve earned more than $5,000,000 over the years. Blogging completely changed my life, giving me the freedom to work from anywhere.
What kept me going was my genuine love for everything related to blogging but also my love for travel. That passion made it easy to dedicate time and effort to grow the blog into what it is today, because I love running an online business that allows me to travel whenever and wherever I want.
Now, I’m excited to help you start your own blog and find success too.
What is a travel blog?
A travel blog is a website where someone shares their travel experiences, tips, and advice. The person who writes it, called a travel blogger, posts about the places they’ve been, activities they’ve tried, and things they’ve learned.
Many travel bloggers also give recommendations for places to stay, eat, and things to do. It’s a way to inspire and help others plan their own trips.
Travel blogs can focus on topics like budget travel, luxury trips, family vacations, solo adventures, and so much more.
Some examples of topics that a travel blog may cover include:
Destination guides – Detailed information on must-see attractions, hidden gems, and local tips for specific cities, countries, or regions
Travel itineraries – Pre-planned routes for weekend getaways, road trips, or long-term travel, outlining where to go and what to see
Local travel tips – Yes, you don’t need to travel by plane in order to be a travel blogger! You can write articles on things to do in your own town.
Budget travel tips – How to travel affordably, including finding cheap flights, budget accommodations, and saving money on food and activities
Solo travel – Tips and advice for solo travelers, including safety, making friends on the road, and building confidence while traveling alone
Family travel – Tips for traveling with children, including family-friendly destinations, packing lists, and keeping kids entertained (such as listing the top travel toys)
Adventure travel – Guides on activities like hiking, diving, surfing, and more, plus how to plan an adventure-focused trip
Cultural experiences – How to engage with local cultures, learn about traditions, and have authentic travel experiences
Travel gear reviews – Recommendations and reviews for travel gear like backpacks, luggage, cameras, and more
Traveling sustainably – How to reduce your environmental impact while traveling, from eco-friendly accommodations to responsible tourism practices
Travel photography tips – Advice on taking beautiful travel photos, including photography tips, gear recommendations, and photo spots
You can pick one or more of these topics to focus on. When you stick to one or two areas, it does help you become more known as an expert in that field, though.

Who can start a travel blog?
Anyone with a passion for travel can start a travel blog!
You don’t need to be a professional writer or photographer. You also don’t need to be a full-time traveler.
Starting a travel blog is a great way to document your adventures and connect with others. Whether you’re traveling full-time or just on weekends, your travel blog can become a helpful resource for other travelers.
Why should you start a travel blog?
Starting a travel blog has many benefits.
It lets you share your adventures with friends, family, and a worldwide audience.
You can also make money from your blog. If your blog gets popular, you can earn through ads, sponsored posts, or affiliate marketing.
Blogging can help you connect with other travelers. You may meet people who share your interests. This can lead to friendships and collaborations. I have met so many amazing people through my blog, which has been so nice over the years!
Having a travel blog is like having a digital scrapbook because you can look back and remember all of your trips, which I think is absolutely amazing. A travel blog kind of “forces” you to write down your memories and take pictures.
Starting a travel blog can be a fun and rewarding way to combine your love for travel with new skills and opportunities.
How To Start a Travel Blog
Below is how to start a travel blog and make money, step by step!
1. Choose a travel niche
Choosing a niche is the first step in starting a successful travel blog. A niche is a specific topic or focus area for your blog. Picking the right niche helps you stand out and attract readers who are interested in that topic.
Think about what you love most about travel. Do you enjoy food, adventure, or culture? Your niche could be anything from luxury travel to budget trips, or even solo adventures.
Another great idea is to think about who you want to help with your blog. Are you writing for families, couples, or solo travelers?
It’s also smart to see what’s trending. Wildlife travel, romantic getaways, and travel for digital nomads are popular niches right now. Research what’s trending and pick something that excites you.
Once you have your niche, you can create content that matches what your readers are looking for. This way, you make sure your blog is both fun to read and useful.
2. Start a self-hosted WordPress blog
To start a travel blog, you’ll need a blogging platform. WordPress is my favorite choice, and it’s what I use for my blog.
WordPress is where you create and manage your blog posts. It’s like the main hub for your blog. You can log in, write new posts, add pictures or links, and publish them for your readers. It’s a simple tool that makes running your blog easy. Plus, one of the best things about WordPress is that you don’t need to know how to code. It’s user-friendly and has lots of ways to customize your blog.
Here are the steps to start a self-hosted WordPress blog:
Get a web hosting service. A popular choice for new bloggers is Bluehost (you can start your own blog for as low as $1.99 per month).
Install WordPress. Most web hosts have a one-click installation to make it as painless as possible.
You can see my full tutorial for this at How To Start A WordPress Blog On Bluehost. There are step-by-step directions included here if you want more detail and/or want to see screenshots of the exact things you should click on.
Plus, if you use my tutorial, you can get the lowest pricing as well as a free domain name!
3. Pick a travel blog name
Deciding on a travel blog name is a big step. You want it to be fun and easy to remember. It’s also good to make it tell what your blog is about.
Here are some more tips:
Think about what makes your travels special. Are you an adventurer, a foodie, or a luxury traveler? Use that in your name.
Using “.com” is the best choice. It’s what most people type first.
Avoid names that are hard to spell or have numbers in them. Simple is best. You don’t want people to get confused or forget your name.
Before you decide, check if the name is available on social media. You’ll want the same name on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, and other sites.
Take your time and have fun with it. Your blog name is the first thing people see, so make it catchy and memorable.
Don’t forget, you can get your domain name (your blog name) for free when you sign up for Bluehost! Click here to claim your free domain name.
4. Design your blog layout
With a travel blog, your site design is very important.
Your travel blog’s design and layout are important because readers like to see a clean and easy-to-navigate blog design. It makes it easier for them to find what they are looking for, and this helps to keep them on your site longer.
Plus, we’ve all seen a bad site design in the past, and when that happens, usually you don’t stay reading that blog for very long (right?!).
So, your blog design is important because you want readers to continue reading and to even come back in the future!
There are three options for designing your travel blog:
Creating your blog design yourself (DIY such as with paid or free themes)
Paying a blog designer for a custom site design
Buying a premade blog layout – this is what I recommend bloggers do!
Doing it yourself is usually the cheapest, but it can take a lot of time. Paying for a custom site design is usually fairly expensive.
My favorite option – I’m a big fan of simply buying a premade blog design. They are a lot more affordable than a custom design and look amazing. One premade blog design site that I recommend is Restored 316. Restored 316 is super easy to use and they have a lot of great blog design options, especially for travel blogs.
Please click here if you’d like to go the easy way and get an affordable premade blog design (this is what I recommend).
5. Make important pages for your blog
To make your travel blog successful, start by setting up your main pages. These pages help your readers easily navigate your site.
Your important pages should include:
Homepage – This is the first impression visitors get of your blog. A clear and organized homepage helps readers quickly understand what your blog is about. Clearly state what your blog focuses on, such as destinations, travel tips, or itineraries, and provide links to your main sections.
About page – Share your story here and explain who you are, why you started traveling, and what kind of travel experiences you write about.
Contact page – Make it easy for readers, tourism boards, or brands to reach you by listing your email address.
Privacy Policy page – Outline how you collect and use data, especially if you collect any personal information. For legal templates, you can search for these online or buy a premade privacy policy here.
Disclosure page – If you earn money through affiliate links, sponsored trips, or partnerships, you need to be transparent about it.
6. Start social media accounts for your travel blog
Creating social media accounts can be super helpful for growing your travel blog.
Social media allows you to share your pictures, travel tips, and stories, making it easier for people to find your blog and follow your adventures.
Social media is especially helpful for a travel blog because it allows you to reach a larger audience and engage with readers in real time. Posting pictures and videos of your trips on Instagram or TikTok, for example, can inspire people to visit your blog for more detailed itineraries and travel advice.
The social media platforms you can start include:
Facebook
Pinterest
Instagram
Twitter
TikTok
You don’t have to be active on all of them, but claiming your blog name on each platform is a smart move to keep your brand name consistent. Then, I also recommend adding social media buttons to your blog so that readers can find you on social media from your blog.
7. Create a blog post plan
A blog content plan is a simple way to organize what you’ll write and post on your blog.
It helps you stay on track and reach your goals, like getting more readers or making more sales.
A good content plan includes a list of topics, post titles, when to publish, and the goal of each post (like promoting something or helping your readers).
It can also include keywords, picture ideas, and how you’ll share your posts. It’s basically a guide to keep your blog running smoothly and growing.
Your travel blog content plan doesn’t need to be complicated, though. It can be as simple as a list of trips or destinations you want to write about. How detailed you make it is up to you.

8. Write your first post
Writing your first post can be exciting and a bit scary. I think pretty much every blogger is a little nervous to share their first blog post – this is completely normal.
Here are some things to think about when writing a blog post:
You can easily start with an introduction. Tell your readers who you are and what your blog is about, and share a bit about why you love to travel.
After the introduction, get into the main content of your post. Share your travel experiences, tips, or plans.
Divide your post into short paragraphs because this makes it easier to read. Use bullet points or numbered lists to break up the text.
I also recommend that you include photos to make your post more appealing. Pictures of your travels can help bring your story to life. It is a travel blog after all, so readers most likely want to see pictures!
Then, I recommend that you end your blog post with a call to action. Ask your readers to leave comments or share your post with their friends.
Remember to proofread your post before publishing.
9. Find ways to make money with your travel blog
You can make money from your travel blog in many ways, such as:
Placing ads on your blog. Companies will pay you to show their banners or links. This can be a good way to earn an income.
Affiliate marketing is another great option. You can recommend travel gear, hotels, or tours and get a commission for every sale made through your links. It’s a win-win for both you and your readers. I have a free ebook to learn more – Affiliate Marketing Tips For Bloggers.
Sponsored posts can bring in extra money too. Brands might pay you to write about their products or services.
Selling digital products like travel guides or ebooks can also be profitable.
You could also sell paid memberships. Members could get access to exclusive content, special travel deals, or even a personal Q&A session with you.
Running webinars or online courses about travel planning can help you earn money. People love learning and are willing to pay for good advice.
Don’t forget about social media. You can get paid for sponsored posts or partnerships on platforms like Instagram and YouTube.
Freelance travel blog writing – There are websites, such as larger travel blogs, that will pay for content as well.
10. How to grow a travel blog
To get readers to your travel blog, you need to promote it.
Here are some ways to get pageviews on your blog:
Share your travel posts and photos on social media platforms like Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.
Guest post on other travel blogs. This can introduce you to new readers who are interested in travel.
Email marketing is one of my favorite ways to grow a blog. You can persuade readers to subscribe to your newsletter and send them updates and new travel posts regularly. If you are looking for a way to send newsletters or emails to your readers, I recommend Convertkit.
Use search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to help your blog appear in search results when people look for travel tips or destinations.
Create helpful video content: Many travelers love visual content, so creating travel vlogs or short clips on YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok can bring traffic to your blog.
Create downloadable resources. Useful resources like packing checklists, travel itineraries, or budget travel guides can get more readers to your blog.
My favorite guide that teaches many different strategies to grow your pageviews is 21 Strategies I Used to Increase My Monthly Page Views from 17k to 400k+ in 10 Months. If you are a new blogger, check out this resource! The author went from 17,000 monthly pageviews to 400,000 and shares all of her best tips in this guide.

Named one of the cloudiest, snowiest, and coldest U.S. cities, Anchorage AK, is also one of the prettiest. With the Chugach Mountains in the distance and lots of gorgeous water, Anchorage truly has an abundance of natural beauty. Not to mention, Anchorage was also named one of the most affordable places to live in Alaska!
However, if you’re not sure where to start your sightseeing journey, don’t worry. We’ve compiled Anchorage’s 10 top beautiful places to check out whether you’ve just signed a lease for your rental home, are looking for an apartment, or have lived in your Anchorage, AK home for several years and many more to come.
1. Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
In no particular order, our first recommendation is the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. This is one of Agnes Stabinska’s, of travel blog Alaska Itinerary, favorites for a reason. She particularly loves the stunning views of the coastline, Chugach Mountains, and if you’re lucky – Denali in the distance.
“It’s perfect for walking, biking, and photography, especially around sunset when the light beautifully illuminates the landscape. This 11-mile-long scenic path stretches from downtown Anchorage to Kincaid Park. Along the trail, some of the best viewpoints include Earthquake Park, which offers historical insights and beautiful coastal views, and Point Woronzof, where you can catch stunning sunset views and spot airplanes taking off from the nearby airport,” says Agnes.
2. The Turnagain Arm
Another great option is The Turnagain Arm located just thirty minutes from downtown Anchorage. Bloggers José Luis Vílchez and Cora Rose of Art We There Yet? love this spot for three main reasons: to “1) Watch surfers ride the bore tide (a unique phenomenon that only happens in a few key places on the globe). 2) Look for eerie stands of dead trees along the Upper Arm. Often called “ghost forests”, these trees died when the land suddenly fell 6-8ft during the historic 1964 earthquake (second largest in recorded history). 3) Drive up Portage Valley Rd and view glacier after glacier clinging to the valley walls.” Their absolute favorite is the 14-mile isthmus trail which is the only stretch of land connecting the Kenai Peninsula to mainland Alaska, so make sure you add that to the top of your list.

3. Mount Baldy
Next up, we have Humphrey Hawksley’s favorite place – Mount Baldy. “Matt Worden from Go Hike Alaska led me on the thousand feet climb along well marked trails where you can absorb Alaska’s expanse, beauty and tranquility,” notes Humphrey. “Roaming the ridgeline, you have mountainscape on one side and panoramic scenes across the Eagle River on the other,” he describes.
Afterwards, Humphrey recommends checking out the Writer’s Block Bookstore and Cafe for a cup of joe, a new read, and some music. As the author of the Rake Ozenna thriller series (set in Alaska), we know his suggestion is foolproof.
4. Potter’s Marsh
“A hidden oasis in Anchorage is Potter’s Marsh, a wildlife viewing boardwalk and bird sanctuary,” says Your Alaskan Adventures’ Deborah Raarup. On this boardwalk stroll, you can expect to see moose, a variety of birds, and even some muskrats year round, as well as swans and their baby cygnets in the spring.
Additionally, “On a clear day, you can see the beautiful Chugach Mountains to the east and the Turnagain Arm to the west,” tells Deborah. With the abundant wildlife and beautiful backdrop. Potter’s Marsh is truly “one of the best places in Anchorage to get outside on an easy hike to see wildlife.”

5. Earthquake Park
Add in a bit of Alaskan history with your nature outing at Earthquake Park. Although a tragic event, this spot commemorates the 1964 earthquake with several signs explaining the effects of the disaster. Beyond your daily history lesson, this park also features incredible trails with the best coastal views and if you’re in luck, gorgeous wildflowers. Don’t forget to stop at the oversation points to take in a grand sight of Cook Inlet and the surrounding mountains.
6. Chugach State Park
It wouldn’t be an Anchorage article without the mention of Chugach State Park! This beloved spot “provides Anchorage residents and visitors with world-class backcountry recreation via numerous trailheads within a half hour drive from the international airport and downtown of Alaska’s largest city,” says Mat Brunton, mountain guide and outdoor educator of Chugach Mountain Institute.
It’s hard to find a park with more diverse landscapes as Chugach has it all: rugged mountains, glaciers, lush forests, and pristine lakes. Beyond hiking, this park is great for biking, spotting wildlife (moose, bears, eagles, etc.), fishing, camping, snowshoeing, and more. With the beautiful scenery and several activities to enjoy, it’s truly a favorite destination for outdoor lovers of all levels for a reason.
7. Adventure in the backcountry of Anchorage, AK
Looking to explore? The National Center for Outdoor & Adventure Education (NCOAE) offers the best wilderness adventures for both teens and adults. Starting in Anchorage, you’ll travel to McCarthy, settle in, and trek across the Alaskan wilderness to a rendezvous point.
What next? Great question! At this remote airstrip, a bush plane will pick you up for a journey further into the backcountry – how cool! “During these days, participants hone their outdoor and leadership skills in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness. The landscape and wildlife provide a dramatic backdrop for the learning experience. Participants may encounter moose, lynx, bears, ground squirrels, Dall sheep, and other wildlife during their guided trip. Whatever challenges the Alaskan wilderness presents, you’ll gain the skills to endure and enjoy it with confidence and style. And once your adventure is complete, you’ll be returned safe and sound to Anchorage,” describes brand and business journalist Mikal Belicove.
8. Flattop Mountain
Indigo Alpine Guides owner Jack Bynum’s perfect day includes a hike to Flattop Mountain. An accessible hike for all levels, this mountain is arguably the most climbed in all Alaska. There are several different paths to choose from, so enjoy having a choose-your-own-adventure moment. Before the hike, Jack recommends fueling up at Fire Island Bakery and/or grabbing breakfast at Middleway Cafe. If you’re doing a late afternoon hike, Jack suggests stopping for a bite at Hearth Pizza for a well-deserved slice or two.
9. Ship Creek
For the ideal afternoon activity, take artist Duke Russell’s suggestion and scooter down to ship creek and the public boat launch. This spot “provides beautiful views of the downtown skyline as well as the Chugach Mountains and Government Hill,” describes Duke. Additionally, “When the tide is out, you’ll see many sea birds feeding in the flats along ship creek,” he adds. A scooter ride followed by a scenic view and beautiful birds? What more could you ask for?
10. Lake Hood
Thirsty for water? Alaskan Sights and Bites’ co-owners Dan and Chris Morris absolutely love Lake Hood. As the world’s busiest seaplane bases, it’s the perfect spot to watch the takeoff and land. And with the backdrop of the Chugach Mountains? There’s no better Alaskan experience. It’s also “a great spot to take photos, and get a feel for the adventurous spirit of Alaska — a place we often share with guests on our Alaskan Sights & Bites van tours,” add Dan and Chris.

The other day I noticed that mortgage rates were being advertised at some really low levels.
Many quotes in the mortgage rate table on my own site were in the mid-5s.
That got me curious how low rates could be with a really favorable loan scenario, such as a 760+ FICO, 20% down home purchase, owner-occupied, single-family residence.
So I headed over to Zillow’s Mortgage Marketplace to see what I could come up with.
Knowing that VA loan rates are typically the lowest, I threw that in too and lo and behold, saw 30-year fixed rates that began with a “4.”
I threw the screenshot up on Twitter and simply said, “Guys, it’s not a mortgage rate story anymore.”
What Did I Mean?
The tweet got a good amount of traction, likely because of those very low 4.875% 30-year fixed rate quotes in the screenshot.
And some felt it was deceiving to post rates like that, which might not be reflective of the entire borrower universe at the moment.
After all, not everyone has a 760 FICO score or the ability to put down 20%, nor might they be eligible for a VA loan.
I also threw in two discount points, since most of the low rates advertised today require the borrower to pay some money at closing in order to obtain a “below-market” rate.
In reality, you can put nothing down on a VA loan and get the same pricing since there aren’t mortgage pricing adjustments on such loans. The same goes for having a lower FICO score.
So the loan scenario wasn’t as crazy hard to qualify for as it first appeared. And when I re-ran the scenario today you could actually get a rate of 4.75% with just one discount point.
But that wasn’t even the point I was trying to make. It wasn’t about a 4.875% rate vs. 4.75% rate, or a 5.25% rate. Or any specific rate at all.
It was that the high mortgage rate story we’ve been fixated on for the past two hours is over.
The housing market today is no longer being driven by the high rate story. We exhausted it, first being caught off guard by how quickly rates increased in early 2022.
Then wondering how high they might go, if they’d hit a new 21st century high (they didn’t!).
That was followed by pondering when they’d begin to fall again (they peaked last October and have dropped quite a bit since then).
And so it’s not about rates anymore.
If It’s Not Rates, What Is It Now?
That brings me to my point. The housing market is now at a crossroads where high mortgage rates are no longer the focus.
Most prospective home buyers today will see that mortgage rates have come down significantly.
The 30-year fixed was basically averaging 8% just before last Halloween, and today is closer to 6.25%.
As I illustrated with some mortgage rate shopping, it’s also possible to bring down that rate to the high 4% range, or the very low 5s, even for conforming loans backed by Fannie and Freddie.
This means anyone who has been pondering a home purchase during the past couple years is no longer obsessed with rates.
Instead, they’re likely considering other factors, such as home prices, the cost of insurance, their job stability, the wider economy, and even the election.
If they were looking at homes when rates were closer to 8%, they’re surely still looking with rates approaching 5% (they could be there soon without all the perfect FICO scores and discount points).
But if they’re no longer looking to buy, or they’re having doubts, it’s not because of high mortgage rates anymore. Those are no longer to blame.
Perhaps now they’re worried that asking prices are too high and could fall. Maybe they’re concerned that the economy is on shaky ground and a recession is coming.
After all, there’s an expectation that the Fed is going to cut its own fed funds rate 200 basis points over the next year.
That doesn’t exactly exude consumer confidence.
We Finally Get to Find Out!
What I’m most excited about now that high mortgage rates are old news is that we finally get to “find out.”
By that, I mean we get to see how this housing market performs in a period of slowing economic growth, with Fed rate cuts and a possible recession on the table.
Remember, the Fed wouldn’t be cutting rates if they weren’t worried about rising unemployment and a softening economy.
In other words, we’re going to see what this housing market is really made of. As I’ve said many times before, there’s no inverse relationship between mortgage rates and home prices.
One does not go up if the other goes down. And vice versa. We already saw home prices continue to rise as mortgage rates jumped from 3% to 8%.
So is it possible that both mortgage rates and home prices could fall in tandem? Sure. Granted nominal home price declines aren’t common to begin with.
But we’re finally going to put it to the test. And I’m looking forward to it.

Ensuring your home is safe and comfortable for your pet involves more than just providing food and water. A truly pet-friendly home requires thoughtful planning and adjustments to create an environment where your pet can thrive. Whether you are looking at homes for sale in Seattle, already renting an apartment in Boston, or moving to a rental house in Little Rock, here’s a comprehensive guide to pet-proofing your home, covering everything from furniture choices fit for your established dog to safety measures and grooming practices for your new kitten.
The basics: creating space for your pet
First and foremost, your pet needs a space to call their own. “To make your home more pet-friendly, it’s essential to create a safe and comfortable environment for your furry friend. Start by using pet-friendly furniture and flooring that can withstand wear and tear,” shared the team at Purrfect Grooming.
One tip for ensuring that your pet is comfortable is to designate specific areas for your pet in your home. Vânia Boto from 4EveryPet suggests that you “provide a comfortable and secure environment for your pet to relax in, such as a cozy bed, a place to hide when they feel insecure, fresh water, and safe toys. For cats, add scratching areas where they can have fun.” Regular maintenance of your pets’ areas will promote cleanliness and comfort.
Invest in flooring and furniture for a pet-friendly home
Choosing the right materials when furnishing and designing your home can have great benefits for maintaining its integrity when you have pets. “Invest in pet-friendly furniture and flooring that can withstand scratches and stains, such as leather or microfiber couches and tile or laminate floors,” suggests Michael Darville from Burns Court Veterinary Care.
Klarice from Georgia Carpet Industries provided great insights on the best flooring options for pet parents:
Choosing the right flooring can prevent unnecessary wear and tear and is a great solution to aid in creating a pet-friendly home.
Don’t overlook pet-safe decor
Caleb Kidwell, owner of Pet Care for the Palm Beaches, chimed in with some additional tips for pet-safe decor for your home: “Swap out low-hanging drapes for cordless blinds to prevent potential accidents, and consider installing scratch-resistant flooring and stain-resistant fabrics for furniture, which not only protect your home but also reduce the stress of constant cleaning.”
Outfitting your home with pet-safety in mind can be challenging, however Dr. Sarah Wooten suggests that you “Get down on all fours and view your home from your pet’s point of view – you will see the world from a different perspective that may allow you to see hazards that you would otherwise miss.” Furniture and floors aren’t the only things to keep in mind when making your home pet-friendly, be sure to take note of the above advice when renovating and decorating your home for your pets safety!

Both cashier’s checks and money orders are forms of payment that are guaranteed, but money orders tend to be for smaller amounts and to cost less.
With both of these payment forms, the payer’s funds are tapped before they’re issued, so there’s no risk of the money not clearing, which can be a considerable advantage over personal checks. Money orders have limits on the dollar amount but cost less to obtain — and don’t require a bank account. You can get a cashier’s check for a much larger amount, but you generally need to acquire it from a bank or credit union, and it’ll cost a bit more.
What Are Money Orders?
Money orders are a form of guaranteed payment that you can purchase at a bank or credit union, post office, money transfer service company, big-box retailer like Walmart, and even some convenience stores and supermarkets.
A money order offers assurance to the person you’re paying: Because you prepay for the money order, the payee knows that the funds are guaranteed. (This is not the case with a personal check, which could bounce when they go to deposit it.)
Although they are called money orders, this is a form of paper payment, much like a check drawn on your checking account.
How Do Money Orders Work?
Money orders can work well as a secure and convenient way to transfer funds. They typically only cost a few dollars at most, and they’re a great solution for someone who doesn’t have a bank account and thus no access to paper checks. You can fund a money order with cash, a debit card, or traveler’s checks. In some cases, you can also buy a money order with a credit card.
However, money orders usually have a $1,000 limit domestically (and $700 internationally).
What Are Cashier’s Checks?
Like money orders, cashier’s checks are prepaid and thus offer the payee a higher level of confidence that the payment will go through. Available from financial institutions where you bank, cashier’s checks are often available for large amounts (there may not be any upper limit) and with more security features. This can make them useful in real estate and other transactions that involve major sums of money.

How Do Cashier’s Checks Work?
You can usually only purchase a cashier’s check at a bank or credit union — and the financial institution may only offer them to current members. As with a money order, you pay for a cashier’s check in advance but in this case with funds from your account. The bank will hold those funds until the recipient deposits the cashier’s check.
Cashier’s checks cost more money (around $10, generally), but they offer greater security features than money orders. Cashier’s checks are ideal for large purchases; there isn’t a $1,000 limit as there usually is with money orders.

Pros and Cons of Money Orders?
Money orders offer a number of advantages, but they also have some drawbacks to consider.
Pro: Available to Unbanked Consumers
Money orders don’t require a bank account to purchase them. For the 4.5% of American households that are unbanked, this option provides a way to send money securely.
Pro: Wide Availability
Money orders are available at many locations you may visit during daily errands. You can buy a money order at the post office, the bank, Walmart, Western Union, or sometimes even your grocery store or a nearby convenience store. And with fees of just a dollar or two, they can also be an affordable option.
Pro: Guaranteed Payment
Because you prepay for a money order, the payment is guaranteed. This offers assurance to whomever you’re paying — and is sometimes required for transactions to be completed.
Con: Purchase Limitations
Money orders are typically capped at $1,000 domestically (and even less internationally). If you need to make a larger payment, you may need to get a cashier’s check or find another payment method.
Con: Security Concerns
Both money orders and cashier’s checks offer more security than personal checks — and certainly more security than using cash to make a payment. What’s more, neither payment option displays your account information (like a personal check).
That said, money orders offer fewer security features than a cashier’s check. For example, if a money order is lost or stolen before you fill out all the required information, anyone could fill it out for themselves and take the money. (With a cashier’s check, the payee’s name is filled out when it’s purchased.)
Pros and Cons of Cashier’s Checks
Cashier’s checks also carry a number of pros and cons:
Pro: Larger Purchase Amounts
Cashier’s checks are ideal for larger transactions, like when making a down payment on a new car or paying closing costs on a house. If you need guaranteed payment for more than $1,000, a cashier’s check can be a good way to go.
Pro: More Security
Cashier’s checks are backed by a financial institution and typically have more security features than a money order. This may be worth the cost: For a few more dollars, you may have additional peace of mind.
Pro: Fast Access to Funds
When you deposit a personal check, it could take a few days for the funds to be available. But because cashier’s checks (and money orders) are prepaid, the recipient can usually get immediate access to funds.
Con: Cost
Cashier’s checks are typically around $10, making them more expensive than money orders. Personal checks are free, as long as your bank has already provided you with a free checkbook.
Con: Limited Availability
You can’t get a cashier’s check just anywhere; you likely need to get them at a financial institution where you bank. (In rare cases, you may be able to purchase one at a financial institution where you are not an account holder.)
When to Use a Money Order vs. a Cashier’s Check
While you can use a money order or a cashier’s check in many scenarios, here are times it may be better to go with a money order:
• It’s a small transaction: Money orders are generally secure and are more affordable than cashier’s checks. If the transaction is under $1,000, you can usually save money by going with a money order.
• You don’t have a bank account: If you don’t have a bank account, you probably won’t be able to get a cashier’s check. A money order may be your only option.
• You’re already at the post office: … or the grocery store … or Walmart. If you don’t want to make a special trip to the bank for a cashier’s check, you can pick up a money order at several convenient locations.

When to Use a Cashier’s Check vs. a Money Order
Money orders can be an affordable and useful option, but in some scenarios, you might want to use a cashier’s check instead, such as when:
• It’s a large purchase: Cashier’s checks aren’t bound by a $1,000 limit. If you’re making a big purchase and need guaranteed funds, a cashier’s check can work well.
• You want bank-backed security: If the payee is hesitant about a personal check, they might also pause before accepting a money order. To ease any concerns from the person you’re paying, you may want to give them a bank-backed cashier’s check.
Tips to Protect Yourself When Using Money Orders or Cashier’s Checks
Cashier’s checks and money orders are typically more secure than cash and personal checks, but there are things you can do to stay safer when using these payment methods, such as:
• Filling out money orders right away: If you lose a money order that doesn’t have the information filled out yet, anyone could fill it out to themselves and cash the money order. Banks typically fill out cashier’s checks before handing the paper over to you, reducing this risk.
• Using reputable vendors: Thoroughly research a vendor before buying a money order. Because only banks and credit unions sell cashier’s checks, you can be more confident in the check’s authenticity upon purchase.
• Keeping your receipts: In case any disputes arise, it’s a good idea to have your receipt. This may also enable you to stop the payment (if the recipient hasn’t yet cashed it), if needed.

The Takeaway
Cashier’s checks and money orders both offer a secure way to make guaranteed payments. Money orders can be better for smaller transactions and are available for purchase at more locations. Cashier’s checks, only available at banks and credit unions, offer heightened security and can be purchased for larger dollar amounts.

Are cashier’s checks or money orders easier to buy?
Money orders are typically easier to buy than cashier’s checks. Money orders are available at the post office, banks, Walmart, Western Union, and select supermarkets and convenience stores. They’re also more affordable, and you don’t need a bank account to purchase one.

SoFi members with direct deposit activity can earn 4.50% annual percentage yield (APY) on savings balances (including Vaults) and 0.50% APY on checking balances. Direct Deposit means a recurring deposit of regular income to an account holder’s SoFi Checking or Savings account, including payroll, pension, or government benefit payments (e.g., Social Security), made by the account holder’s employer, payroll or benefits provider or government agency (“Direct Deposit”) via the Automated Clearing House (“ACH”) Network during a 30-day Evaluation Period (as defined below). Deposits that are not from an employer or government agency, including but not limited to check deposits, peer-to-peer transfers (e.g., transfers from PayPal, Venmo, etc.), merchant transactions (e.g., transactions from PayPal, Stripe, Square, etc.), and bank ACH funds transfers and wire transfers from external accounts, or are non-recurring in nature (e.g., IRS tax refunds), do not constitute Direct Deposit activity. There is no minimum Direct Deposit amount required to qualify for the stated interest rate. SoFi members with direct deposit are eligible for other SoFi Plus benefits.
As an alternative to direct deposit, SoFi members with Qualifying Deposits can earn 4.50% APY on savings balances (including Vaults) and 0.50% APY on checking balances. Qualifying Deposits means one or more deposits that, in the aggregate, are equal to or greater than $5,000 to an account holder’s SoFi Checking and Savings account (“Qualifying Deposits”) during a 30-day Evaluation Period (as defined below). Qualifying Deposits only include those deposits from the following eligible sources: (i) ACH transfers, (ii) inbound wire transfers, (iii) peer-to-peer transfers (i.e., external transfers from PayPal, Venmo, etc. and internal peer-to-peer transfers from a SoFi account belonging to another account holder), (iv) check deposits, (v) instant funding to your SoFi Bank Debit Card, (vi) push payments to your SoFi Bank Debit Card, and (vii) cash deposits. Qualifying Deposits do not include: (i) transfers between an account holder’s Checking account, Savings account, and/or Vaults; (ii) interest payments; (iii) bonuses issued by SoFi Bank or its affiliates; or (iv) credits, reversals, and refunds from SoFi Bank, N.A. (“SoFi Bank”) or from a merchant. SoFi members with Qualifying Deposits are not eligible for other SoFi Plus benefits.
SoFi Bank shall, in its sole discretion, assess each account holder’s Direct Deposit activity and Qualifying Deposits throughout each 30-Day Evaluation Period to determine the applicability of rates and may request additional documentation for verification of eligibility. The 30-Day Evaluation Period refers to the “Start Date” and “End Date” set forth on the APY Details page of your account, which comprises a period of 30 calendar days (the “30-Day Evaluation Period”). You can access the APY Details page at any time by logging into your SoFi account on the SoFi mobile app or SoFi website and selecting either (i) Banking > Savings > Current APY or (ii) Banking > Checking > Current APY. Upon receiving a Direct Deposit or $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits to your account, you will begin earning 4.50% APY on savings balances (including Vaults) and 0.50% on checking balances on or before the following calendar day. You will continue to earn these APYs for (i) the remainder of the current 30-Day Evaluation Period and through the end of the subsequent 30-Day Evaluation Period and (ii) any following 30-day Evaluation Periods during which SoFi Bank determines you to have Direct Deposit activity or $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits without interruption.
SoFi Bank reserves the right to grant a grace period to account holders following a change in Direct Deposit activity or Qualifying Deposits activity before adjusting rates. If SoFi Bank grants you a grace period, the dates for such grace period will be reflected on the APY Details page of your account. If SoFi Bank determines that you did not have Direct Deposit activity or $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits during the current 30-day Evaluation Period and, if applicable, the grace period, then you will begin earning the rates earned by account holders without either Direct Deposit or Qualifying Deposits until you have Direct Deposit activity or $5,000 in Qualifying Deposits in a subsequent 30-Day Evaluation Period. For the avoidance of doubt, an account holder with both Direct Deposit activity and Qualifying Deposits will earn the rates earned by account holders with Direct Deposit.
Members without either Direct Deposit activity or Qualifying Deposits, as determined by SoFi Bank, during a 30-Day Evaluation Period and, if applicable, the grace period, will earn 1.20% APY on savings balances (including Vaults) and 0.50% APY on checking balances.
Interest rates are variable and subject to change at any time. These rates are current as of 8/27/2024. There is no minimum balance requirement. Additional information can be found at http://www.sofi.com/legal/banking-rate-sheet.
