For most people, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a better starting point in the travel rewards market. (There’s a reason NerdWallet describes it as “nearly a must-have for travelers.”) It offers higher rewards earnings on everyday purchases, and those rewards carry a 25% higher redemption value when used to book travel through the Chase travel portal. That’s a lot of value for a modest annual fee of $95.

The Platinum Card® from American Express is marketed as a premium travel card. Its rewards earning rates focus on select travel spending, and it carries more luxury benefits, including lounge access, high-end fitness, shopping and hotel credits. However, those premium benefits come with a premium annual fee of $695 — a hard cost to justify for many people.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison so you can decide which card is right for you.

Still not sure?

Why the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is better for most people

Lower annual fee

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card packs a lot of punch in terms of travel rewards value, all with a manageable $95 annual fee. Compare that with The Platinum Card® from American Express’s eye-popping $695 annual fee — an intimidating figure for many travelers. While the Amex Platinum does advertise a wide range of travel and shopping credits to offset that fee, taking full advantage of those benefits can be burdensome.

More value, more dometic transfer partners

When using your points to book travel through the issuer’s portal, Chase Ultimate Rewards® are more valuable. Points earned from the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card are worth an impressive 1.25 cents per point. That’s an outsized value compared with the American Express travel portal, where Membership Rewards points are redeemed at one cent per point on flights and certain hotel bookings. Other hotel bookings made through AmEx carry a value of 0.7 cent per point.

Plus, Chase’s transfer partners include several well-known domestic airlines and hotel brands, offering easy accessibility for points redemption. American Express offers more transfer options than Chase, and savvy travelers can find outsized value for their points. But AmEx’s transfer partners are primarily foreign airlines, making Membership Rewards points more challenging to transfer for U.S.-based domestic travelers.

Better earnings rates on everyday spending

Both cards earn 5x per $1 spent on travel booked through their travel portals, but the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the clear winner for everyday spending. It earns 3x on dining, streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target and wholesale clubs), while the Amex Platinum earns 1x in each of those categories. Terms apply.

Why you might want The Platinum Card® from American Express

Lounge access

In this category, there’s no competition. If airport lounge access is a high priority, you’ll be best served by The Platinum Card® from American Express.

Where the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers no lounge access, the AmEx Platinum is known for its top-notch airport lounge benefits, including access to over 1,400 lounges in more than 500 airports worldwide. Those include more than 40 American Express Centurion and Escape lounges, and additional access through partners like Priority Pass and Plaza Premium Group. Terms apply.

Booking with the airline

When it comes to booking flights, experienced travelers know that the way you book can make a big difference in the ease of changing or canceling your plans. So while both the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Amex Platinum offer 5 points per dollar spent on flights booked through their respective travel portals, The Platinum Card® from American Express has a leg up in offering that same earnings rate for flights booked directly through the airline. Terms apply.

The Sapphire Preferred, on the other hand, offers the 5x points rate only if you book your flights through the Chase travel portal. That can pose a problem in the event of a weather delay, cancellation, or any other trip interruption.

The prestige factor

Both cards are metal, but The Platinum Card® from American Express carries a certain luxury gravitas that the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card can’t compete with — and doesn’t try. That prestige has some cash value, too. When used correctly, the card’s luxury perks add up quickly to help offset its eye-popping annual fee. When you enroll, those include statement credits of up to $300 per year toward an Equinox gym membership, $50 twice per year at Saks Fifth Avenue, $200 per year in Uber cash ($15 per month plus an extra $20 in December), and $200 a year for prepaid hotel bookings through The Hotel Collection or Fine Hotels + Resorts properties, just to name a few. Terms apply.

However, if these benefits don’t match your lifestyle, you’ll be paying mostly for the cachet of pulling the famous platinum card out of your wallet. Only you can decide how much that prestige is worth.

Which card should you get?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express are two of the best travel rewards cards on the market, but they have different strengths and weaknesses. Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a great choice for travelers who want a card with a low annual fee and great rewards for everyday spending. The Amex Platinum may be the better choice for frequent travelers who value lounge access and luxury benefits — but given the card’s steep $695 annual fee, it’s important to make sure you can take full advantage of all those benefits before you sign up.

Delta Air Lines is implementing some major changes to its SkyMiles program. The airline is overhauling how members qualify for elite status. In making the changes, Delta will do away with requirements for Medallion Qualifying Miles (MQMs) and Segments (MQSs). Instead, SkyMiles members will qualify for Medallion elite status solely through Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs).

Customers will be able to earn MQDs through spending on flights, rental cars and hotels booked through Delta Air Lines, along with everyday spending charged to co-branded Delta credit cards.

The changes take effect Jan. 1, 2024. Delta officials say the move is designed to simplify the program.

“One of the consistent pieces of feedback is to earn status can sometimes be complicated,” says Dwight James, Delta’s senior vice president for customer engagement and loyalty. He explained customer feedback also prompted Delta to add more rewards for loyalty beyond traditional air travel.

In conjunction with the SkyMiles overhaul, Delta plans to significantly restrict access to its Sky Club airport lounges, which have been plagued by overcrowding in recent years. And company officials told NerdWallet that more changes to its elite status benefits are on the way, too.

Here’s what you need to know about the changes.

How to earn elite status with Delta in 2024

In perhaps the most significant change, Delta will tie elite status qualification more closely — indeed, solely — to spending. Starting in 2024, MQDs will be the lone measurement for how members qualify for Medallion elite status.

How to earn Medallion Qualifying Dollars

Delta members will be able to earn MQDs through a variety of avenues:

Terms apply.

2024 Delta elite status requirements

Since MQDs are the only metric for reaching Medallion elite status, Delta will roll out new benchmarks.

Members will qualify for 2025 elite status upon reaching the following benchmarks in 2024:

  • Silver Medallion: 6,000 MQDs.

  • Gold Medallion: 12,000 MQDs.

  • Platinum Medallion: 18,000 MQDs.

  • Diamond Medallion: 35,000 MQDs.

What happens to MQMs?

Since MQMs will be going away, SkyMiles members with rollover MQMs from 2023 will have a one-time choice to convert their MQMs into redeemable miles, MQDs or a combination of both.

Million Miler Status changes

Delta is also making some changes for Million Miler Status members. Starting next year, Million Miler members will be in the number three priority position for complimentary upgrades. That means they will now get selected for upgrades over Delta SkyMiles Reserve credit cardholders and Delta corporate travelers.

Any MQMs earned toward the status will remain, and going forward, all flight miles earned will be added to customers’ Million Miler balance.

2024 Delta Sky Club access changes

Delta has tweaked its Sky Club access policies next year in an effort to stem overcrowding — an issue the company has worked to address for years.

“Visit growth has outpaced seat growth,” James acknowledged, noting Delta’s hope to preserve the “elevated experience,” especially for Delta’s most premium customers.

Sky Club access changes

Cardholders will receive 10 visits per program year.

Members can earn unlimited visits after spending $75,000 on the card in a calendar year. Once earned, unlimited visits will last through Jan. 31 of the following year.

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card members

Cardholders no longer receive access to Sky Club.

The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express members

Starting Feb. 1, 2025, members will receive six visits per program year.

Members can earn unlimited access after spending $75,000 in a program year. Unlimited access remains through Jan. 31 of the following year. Spend tracking begins Jan. 1, 2024.

Travelers with a basic economy ticket

No Sky Club access.

What these changes mean for Delta flyers

Delta’s changes for next year represent a major overhaul for the SkyMiles program. In tying elite status qualification more closely to spending, Delta’s changes have some resemblance to American Airlines’ shift to Loyalty Points for its AAdvantage program. In theory, you could now reach Medallion status while flying sparingly.

Delta says the changes are a way to appeal to a higher number of members while continuing to emphasize its premium customers and rewarding other travel engagement with the company, which James notes is up 50% since 2018.

“This program is something that we think we have built very uniquely for all levels of membership, whether you’re a new member or Medallion,” he says.

The people affected perhaps the most negatively by the changes are the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card members, who will lose Sky Club access as part of the company’s ongoing effort to reduce overcrowding.

Meanwhile, what elite status tiers will look like in the future may change a bit, too. Company officials say they’ll announce additional and revamped elite status benefits at a later date.

Some AmEx lounges stand out for their unexpected amenities. The JFK Centurion Lounge has a mini spa. The Denver version has bar games like pool and table shuffleboard. But the newest AmEx lounge will have a first-of-its-kind amenity: a piano bar.

You’ll get to hear a professional musician tickle the ivories over at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), which will host the newest Centurion Lounge when it opens in 2026. The new, 17,000-square-foot Centurion Lounge will be located in Terminal A.

It joins a list of what is now more than 40 lounges worldwide, and it also rounds out the company’s lounge offerings in the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut — joining existing lounges at John F. Kennedy Airport and LaGuardia Airport.

Newark AmEx Centurion Lounge amenities

Each AmEx lounge exhibits some local flair. For example, the San Francisco Centurion Lounge has a wine tasting area stocked with bottles from nearby Napa Valley.

The amenities set to be a part of the new Newark lounge might be the most charming yet. AmEx said it will include features inspired by New Jersey’s history and culture, including:

  • A jazz bar: The cocktail bar is inspired by the 20th-century jazz era in the state.

  • A piano lounge: AmEx says it’ll feature live music.

  • An indoor terrace: A 1,400-square-foot indoor terrace will overlook the airport’s airfield while providing views of Manhattan.

  • An archival collection: This exhibit will feature artifacts and antiques celebrating New Jersey history.

Other common amenities in AmEx Centurion Lounges that you’ll find at the EWR location include a hot food buffet, complimentary Wi-Fi, showers, work stations and a family area.

Platinum and Centurion Card Members can bring up to two guests, but for a fee. Under the recently updated Centurion Lounge guest policy, cardholders owe a fee of $50 per adult guest they choose to bring in. Rewards optimizers use the term “trifecta” to describe a combination of three credit cards from one issuer that have complimentary benefits. When combined, the cards create a rewarding synergy that helps you earn more points and get more value out of your redemptions.

Chase and American Express offer popular trifecta combinations for people seeking travel rewards. While you can mix and match different cards to create an optimal trifecta based on your spending habits, there is a recommended combination for each issuer.

In a head-to-head showdown, the Chase trifecta comes out ahead for most people — you’ll pay significantly less in annual fees, get easier-to-use travel credits, rewards and travel partners, and have broader acceptance around the world. The Chase trifecta is also more accessible for people who don’t qualify for a small-business credit card.

At a glance

Here’s a look at the rewards-earning rates for each trifecta. (For details about specific benefits and statement credits offered by each card, check out the individual review pages linked above.)

Chase trifecta

AmEx trifecta

Rewards earning rates

Chase Sapphire Reserve®:

  • 10 points per dollar spent on hotels and car rentals booked through Chase and Chase Dining purchases.

  • 5 points per dollar spent on flights booked through Chase.

  • 3 points per dollar spent on travel and dining.

  • 1 point per dollar on all other spending.

Chase Freedom Flex℠:

  • 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases each quarter on bonus categories that you activate (1% back after).

  • 5% back on travel booked through Chase.

  • 3% back at restaurants and drugstores.

  • 1% back on all other non-bonus-category spending.

Chase Freedom Unlimited®:

  • 5% back on travel booked through Chase.

  • 3% back at restaurants and drugstores.

  • 1.5% on all other spending.

The Platinum Card® from American Express:

  • 5 points per dollar for flights booked directly with airlines or through AmEx Travel (on up to $500,000 per calendar year, then 1x).

  • 5 points per dollar for prepaid hotels booked with AmEx Travel.

  • 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

American Express® Gold Card:

  • 4 points per dollar at restaurants, including takeout and delivery in the U.S.

  • 4 points per dollar at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year in purchases, then 1x).

  • 3 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or through AmEx Travel.

  • 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express:

  • 2 points per dollar on the first $50,000 in purchases per calendar year (then 1x).

Terms apply.

Overall annual fees

$945. Terms apply.

Why the Chase trifecta is better for most people

Lower annual cost

The collective annual cost of the Chase trifecta is $550, with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® having the only annual fee.

That’s 42% cheaper than the $945 annual cost of the AmEx trifecta, which includes annual fees of $695 on The Platinum Card® from American Express, $250 on the American Express® Gold Card and $0 on The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express.

Sure, the AmEx trifecta offers hundreds of dollars worth of coupon-book style credits for services like Uber and Walmart+ that can help offset the higher annual cost. But the catch is that many of these credits are limited in scope: the $240 annual entertainment credit, for example, is doled out in $20 monthly increments and applies to a handful of entertainment subscriptions only. You may have to go out of your way to optimize the potential value of the credits.

Easier-to-use travel credits

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® comes with a $300 annual travel credit that applies to all eligible travel purchases. It doesn’t get any easier — simply book travel like hotel, airfare or rental car with your card, and receive a statement credit.

By comparison, The Platinum Card® from American Express comes with an annual $200 airline fee credit (enrollment required), but it too has several caveats. You must select only one airline from a short list of options to apply the credit. It only applies to incidental charges like in-flight refreshments and checked baggage, and the charge must be made separately from the ticket purchase. The card also comes with an annual $200 hotel credit, but that only applies to specific luxury hotels that are prepaid through the American Express travel portal. Since prepaid hotels are often nonrefundable, you could incur a significant out-of-pocket expense if your plans change. Terms apply.

More valuable rewards

All three cards in the Chase trifecta earn Chase Ultimate Rewards®. These rewards can be combined into your Chase Sapphire Reserve® account, where they are redeemable through the Chase Ultimate Rewards® travel portal at a rate of 1.5 cents each. That makes 6,666 Ultimate Rewards® worth $100 in travel.

American Express Membership Rewards points are worth 1 cent each when booking airfare and 0.7 cent a piece when booking hotels through the AmEx travel portal. It would cost 10,000 points for $100 in airfare, or 14,286 points for a $100 hotel stay. That’s significantly less value than you can get for the same number of Ultimate Rewards®.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Though classified as cash back cards, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ and Chase Freedom Unlimited® earn Ultimate Rewards® points. But if you hold just those cards, the points are worth 1 cent each toward travel booked through Chase and are unable to be transferred to travel partners. Adding the Chase Sapphire Reserve® unlocks the ability to transfer to partners and increases the value of the points to 1.5 cents each.

More accessible travel partners

Both Chase and AmEx have a broad list of airline and hotel transfer partners — American Express has 21 travel partners compared with Chase’s 14. But more isn’t always better.

In this case, Chase wins for many travelers with quality over quantity. Ultimate Rewards® can be transferred to partners like United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Hyatt at no cost.

While American Express boasts more partners, the majority of them are international airlines and not as familiar to many. Transferring points to these airlines can yield impressive value, but can also cause more headaches and confusion to navigate. The biggest domestic transfer partner for AmEx is Delta Airlines — however, you’ll pay an excise tax for transferring points to Delta (and a few others).

No business cards required

Our recommended Chase trifecta consists of all personal credit cards. That makes it broadly accessible to anyone with a credit profile that qualifies for the three cards. However, you’ll have to be eligible for a small-business credit card to craft the ideal AmEx trifecta.

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express and its ability to earn 2 points per dollar for all purchases on up to $50,000 annually is the glue that really holds the AmEx trifecta together, since the other cards only earn 1x on non-bonus spending. If you don’t qualify for a small-business card, the Chase trifecta is the easy choice. Terms apply.

Better international acceptance

All Chase credit cards carry the Visa or Mastercard logo, making them usable nearly anywhere credit cards are accepted throughout the globe. American Express has closed the acceptance gap domestically, but still lags behind Visa and Mastercard abroad. If you’re looking to use your card internationally, your surefire bet is the Chase trifecta.

Why you might want the AmEx trifecta

Big grocery and restaurant spend

The American Express® Gold Card offers a sky-high 4 points per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 in annual spend) and restaurants. The Chase trifecta earns an everyday 3 points per dollar at restaurants, and the potential to earn 5 points per dollar on up to $1,500 in quarterly spend if grocery stores are selected as a rotating bonus category on the Chase Freedom Flex. If you have an outsized budget for dining out or groceries, the math may have you leaning toward the AmEx trifecta. Terms apply.

Elite status and luxury perks

You might prefer the AmEx trifecta if you value elite status and exclusivity. By holding The Platinum Card® from American Express, you’ll get complimentary gold elite status with Hilton and Marriott (enrollment required), President’s Circle status with Hertz, Emerald Club Executive status with National, 24-hour access to a concierge for those hard-to-access reservations or tickets, and access to members-only VIP experiences at prestigious events like Wimbledon and the Kentucky Derby. Terms apply.

If you value these perks, the AmEx trifecta may be worth the added annual cost.

Airport lounge access

If you’re a frequent flyer and often find yourself in airports, lounge access can be a great way to escape the commotion of the terminal. In addition to a Priority Pass Select membership (which the Chase trifecta also has), the AmEx trifecta also lets you access AmEx Centurion and International Lounges, Delta Sky Clubs (only when flying Delta) and Plaza Premium, Escape and Airspace network lounges.

That’s a huge footprint that includes complimentary access to over 1,400 airport lounges. If you want lounge access, the AmEx trifecta may be better for you.

🤓Nerdy Tip

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers a dining credit (normally $28 each) for you and a guest at participating Priority Pass restaurants. The Priority Pass access granted by AmEx cards excludes these restaurants.

Which trifecta should you get?

Most people will do better with the Chase trifecta. The annual cost is significantly lower, the benefits and rewards are more transparent and easy to use, and your points are worth more when booking travel through the Chase travel portal. The AmEx trifecta could be a good choice for those who value a broader airport lounge footprint and luxury benefits, but realize you’ll be paying a lot more for those perks.

Disney has a massive global footprint across its theme parks, films and merchandise. And it doesn’t stop there. Among its many offerings is the Disney Cruise Line, whose fleet of five ships sails all over the world.

Family-friendly but with adults-only areas, Disney cruises offer some of the most comprehensive cruise options around. Let’s break down everything there is to know about the Disney Cruise Line, including pricing, destinations and its loyalty program.

About Disney Cruise Line cruises

You can always expect some magic from Disney, and there is no exception when sailing on Disney Cruise Line. Although its fleet is small, it offers a high-end, family-friendly experience for guests. Here’s a quick overview of Disney Cruise Line’s key features.

  • Cabin types: Disney Cruise Line offers all the usual cabin types, including inside, oceanview, verandah and concierge-level rooms. Disney Cruise Line’s cabins are larger than average and designed for families, with split bathrooms and privacy curtains. Their largest rooms can accommodate up to seven guests.

  • Main U.S. routes: Disney has several departure points from within the United States, including options from San Diego, New York City, Miami, and Galveston, Texas. However, its most frequent departures are from Port Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida, to the Bahamas and the Caribbean or from Vancouver, British Columbia to Alaska.

  • Loyalty program: Disney Cruise Line offers the Castaway Club to repeat guests. It has four membership levels — Silver, Gold, Platinum and Pearl. The first level is earned by completing a single cruise.

Disney Cruise Line destinations

Although Disney currently operates only five ships, the cruise line still manages to cover most of the world. Here are the locations you can currently sail on a Disney cruise:

Disney cruise destinations

  • Australia.

  • Caribbean.

  • New Zealand.

  • Pacific Coast.

  • Panama Canal.

  • South Pacific.

  • Transatlantic.

Cruises are available in a variety of lengths, from three nights up to 15 nights.

Disney Cruise Line prices

Disney cruises tend to be more expensive than the average cruise. Currently, for example, the cheapest cruise departing from Port Canaveral is a three-night trip to the Bahamas, which costs $1,958 for two guests.

And you’ll pay more to take a “special occasion” Disney cruise. The same three-night Bahamas cruise sailing during Disney’s Silver Anniversary at Sea starts at $2,345 for two guests.

When it comes to timing, standard logic applies. The high season will cost more, especially during holidays and the summer break.

The cheapest rate we found — the previously-mentioned $1,958 — is for a cruise in late January, a time when those with school-aged children might have trouble getting away. Meanwhile, the most expensive period for this cruise takes place over the Christmas holiday and rings in at $3,737 for an inside stateroom.

For all destinations, if you’d like to save money, avoid peak periods and search all available dates to find the lowest rates. This is true even on less popular cruises, such as those sailing up to Alaska.

The cheapest cost for two guests to Alaska from Vancouver is $2,983 in mid-September, while the same cruise will cost you $4,607 if you sail over the Fourth of July holiday.

🤓Nerdy Tip

One-way positioning cruises — that is, those that end in a different location from where they started — are often much cheaper per night than standard round-trip cruises.

What’s included

Disney cruises are more inclusive than most cruises. You don’t, for example, need to pay extra for soft drinks on a Disney cruise like you would on Norwegian Cruise Line. You’re also entitled to complimentary room service 24/7, unlike on Virgin Voyages, where you’ll be charged a $5 fee for each delivery.

Here are more inclusions you can expect.

  • Live, high-quality entertainment.

  • Large staterooms (designed for parties of up to three guests).

  • Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay (on most Bahamas and Caribbean cruises).

  • Upscale restaurants, quick-service dining, poolside snacks and room service.

  • Adults-only lounges and pool areas.

  • Waterslides (on some ships).

Disney Cruise Line loyalty program: Castaway Club

Disney isn’t known for its loyalty programs. For example, there is no frequent traveler program associated with staying at one of its resorts or frequenting its parks. However, Disney Cruise Line rewards repeat customers with various benefits, including a complimentary specialty dinner, free photo downloads and an exclusive terminal check-in area.

Castaway Club levels

The Castaway Club levels are Silver, Gold, Platinum and Pearl.

Silver

  • How to earn: Sail on one cruise.

  • Best benefits: Book cruises one day before the general public, online activity planning 90 days before sailing, check in 33 days early, exclusive terminal check-in.

Gold

  • How to earn: Sail on five to nine cruises.

  • Best benefits: Book cruises two days before the general public, online activity planning 105 days before sailing, check in 35 days early, onboard reception, special discounts.

Platinum

  • How to earn: Sail on 10 to 24 cruises.

  • Best benefits: Book cruises three days before the general public, online activity planning 120 days before sailing, check in 38 days early, complimentary specialty dinner.

Pearl

  • How to earn: Sail on 25+ cruises.

  • Best benefits: Book cruises four days before the general public, online activity planning 123 days before sailing, check in 40 days early, complimentary unlimited digital photo package.

What is the best Disney Cruise Line ship?

The Disney Wish is the newest Disney Cruise Line ship and certainly its best. It just launched in the summer of 2022. Among its many amenities, guests can find the first-ever Disney attraction at sea. It’s a 760-foot water slide filled with show scenes, lighting, music and more that touches down into a lazy river.

The Disney Wish also has dedicated areas themed for “Frozen,” the Marvel Universe and “Star Wars.”

In addition, the Disney Wish has all the regular amenities you’d expect on a Disney cruise, including live entertainment, pools and spacious staterooms.

Frequently asked questions

Does Disney Cruise Line have free Wi-Fi?

Disney Cruise Line does not offer free Wi-Fi. Instead, it has three levels of packages from which to choose:

  • Stay Connected: $10 per day for the entire cruise or $12 per day for a 24-hour period.

  • Basic Surf: $20 per day for the entire cruise or $24 per day for a 24-hour period.

  • Premium Surf: $30 per day for the entire cruise or $36 per day for a 24-hour period.

These packages are available on the Disney Wish, Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream. The Disney Wonder still operates on the old data-usage Wi-Fi packages.

Is Disney Cruise Line all-inclusive?

Most of your daily expenses, including your food and non-alcoholic beverages, are included when sailing on a Disney cruise. However, if you’d like specialty drinks or alcohol, you’ll need to pay extra. Gratuities are not included, and Disney Cruise Line’s recommended tip is a minimum of $14.50 per guest, per night.

How much is the Disney Cruise Line drink package?

Disney Cruise Line doesn’t offer the standard drink package other cruise lines offer. Drink packages allow you to pay a flat-rate price and drink as much alcohol as you’d like.

Instead, you’ll either pay per drink or purchase bundled quantities onboard. It’s also possible to purchase a specialty beer mug at the pub onboard, which can then be refilled across the ship. Much like Disney’s popcorn buckets, your beer mugs entitle you to cheaper refills on all your beer.

Does Disney Cruise Line require COVID-19 vaccine or test?

In the past, Disney Cruise Line required that you be vaccinated or tested for COVID-19 before sailing, but this is no longer the case. Guests departing from the United States are not required to do either, though the cruise line highly encourages you to get vaccinated before sailing.

Highland Park and University Park top the list for most expensive markets, with homes selling for a median price of nearly $3.2 million and $2.7 million, respectively. The high price tag is for good reason as these homes feature meticulously crafted architecture, spacious interiors, and upscale finishes. Tree-lined streets, manicured gardens, and proximity to cultural amenities characterize these exclusive areas, offering a blend of prestige and comfortable sophistication.

Homes in Preston Hollow, known for their sprawling estates, lush landscapes, and architectural grandeur, saw a median sale price of nearly $1.3 million. Bluffview homes, with a median sale price of almost $2 million, exude timeless charm, featuring elegant designs, scenic vistas, and lush surroundings.

Spa-like bathrooms feature deluxe fixtures, soaking tubs, and spacious walk-in showers. Intricate crown molding and coffered ceilings adorn living spaces, while smart home systems offer advanced automation. Expansive windows invite natural light and reveal manicured outdoor spaces with lavish pools and landscaping. These homes often showcase grand entrances, wine cellars, and entertainment areas, combining upscale materials and meticulous craftsmanship for an unmatched luxurious living experience.

2. Top-of-the-line appliances

Indulge in professional-grade ranges, built-in espresso makers, and wine refrigerators that cater to the connoisseur’s desires.

3. Backyard oasis

You’ll often find that a backyard oasis in Dallas, TX, is a common home feature among luxury homes, often featuring amenities like a resort-style pool with cascading waterfall, soothing spa, and lush landscaping. Alfresco kitchens, fireplaces, and lounges create spaces for leisure and entertaining. High-end finishes, like premium outdoor furniture and artistic lighting, enhance the ambiance. Thoughtful design elements offer privacy, such as elegant pergolas or tall hedges, and the inclusion of natural rock features adds an organic touch, seamlessly blending opulence with nature. Silversea is a leader in the luxury, small-ship cruising market. These cruises typically appeal to the high-end traveler looking for personalized service, upscale dining and accommodations, access to smaller ports and a top-notch vacation experience.

If you’re in the market for a high-end cruise vacation, here’s everything you need to know about Silversea.

About Silversea

You won’t find waterslides, kids clubs or roller coasters on a Silversea cruise.

Instead, expect an elevated experience designed for those looking for a relaxing yet entertaining sailing. Here are a few key features of Silversea cruises:

Accommodations

Every one of Silversea’s cabins has an ocean view, and they’re all designated as suites with a high space-to-guest ratio. For guests’ needs throughout the cruise, butler service is available in every room.

Some suites are more luxurious — smaller suites only have windows overlooking the ocean, while classic veranda suites and many others come with a balcony.

Some room categories, such as the ultra-luxurious Otium Suite, are exclusive to Silversea’s newest ship, Silver Nova. Others are found across the fleet, although accommodations on board each vessel may differ slightly.

All-inclusive sailings

Many cruise lines charge their passengers a base fare for the trip, allowing them to choose various add-ons — such as beverages, specialty restaurants, internet access and port excursions — for an additional cost.

Silversea does away with this. It advertises an all-inclusive cruise package, which includes everything from shore excursions and alcoholic drinks to butler service and gratuities.

Primary U.S. ports

Silversea ships span the globe, but travelers that don’t want to venture too far from home will find many cruises departing from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Trips also depart from New York City for destinations in Canada.

Those wishing to depart from the West Coast can set sail from San Francisco or Los Angeles. Ships from these ports travel to the Caribbean, Alaska, Canada and other far-flung destinations.

Where does Silversea sail?

Silversea’s destination map is extensive, with over 900 ports on all seven continents. Sailings are at least six days long, but trips can last several weeks to a month or more.

For those with the time and the money, Silversea offers World Cruises that travel from continent to continent in a global adventure that can take as many as 140 days.

How much does a Silversea cruise cost?

Silversea sailings are no discount venture, but the all-inclusive nature of each cruise adds value.

Meals, drinks, entertainment and onboard special events are all part of the price. The rates vary based on demand, destination and time of year.

There are two types of prices: “door-to-door,” which includes airport transfers and airfare, or “port-to-port,” which is the cruise fare without any transportation to or from the port.

Rates can vary from as low as $2,800 for a seven-day trip from Colombia to Florida to $94,700 for a 125-day expedition cruise from Chile to Norway.

Silversea also offers special fares for single travelers on select excursions, which provides a discount instead of paying the full cost of a double-occupancy cabin.

What is the best Silversea ship?

There are 13 ships in the Silversea fleet — with more scheduled for delivery in the coming years — ranging in size from 51 to 364 cabins. The best ship, however, will depend on the type of sailing you want.

The smallest ships are typically expedition ships that sail itineraries like the Galapagos or Antarctica. For example, the 100-passenger Silver Origin was Silversea’s first purpose-built destination ship, built explicitly for cruising in the Galapagos. It is also the most environmentally-friendly ship built by Silversea.

Another small ship is the Silver Explorer, with a capacity for 144 guests and a strengthened hull to sail in Antarctica and the Arctic safely.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have larger ships such as Silver Spirit, which was renovated in 2018. With space for 608 passengers, it spends much of its time sailing around Europe, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.

Ships like Silver Spirit look more like cruise ships, with amenities that include larger pools, lounges and plentiful dining options. Expedition ships are smaller by nature and therefore have fewer onboard facilities.

The best Silversea ship depends on the type of traveler you are, the destinations you want to visit, and the amenities you desire.

What is the newest Silversea ship?

Silver Nova is Silversea’s newest ship, with plans to set sail later this summer. It will also be the largest ship in the Silversea fleet, with space for 728 passengers. Coming in 2024 is a second ship of the same size, the Silver Ray.

These ships feature a new asymmetrical design that gives their interiors a more spacious feel. Additionally, they’ll have the largest pools in the Silversea fleet, and every suite will have a balcony.

What’s included in a Silversea cruise

As mentioned above, Silversea advertises its cruises as all-inclusive, and compared to many cruise lines, this is pretty accurate. Here’s what’s included with all Silversea cruises:

  • 24-hour butler service.

  • Complimentary beverages, including alcohol, around the ship and in minibars.

  • Gourmet meals, including room service and specialty restaurants.

  • Gratuities.

  • Select shore excursions.

  • Wi-Fi access.

  • Onboard lectures and entertainment.

Passengers who opt for the door-to-door all-inclusive option will also receive the following:

  • Private transfers to and from their home airport.

  • Airfare to and from the port city, including international flights.

  • Transfers between the ship and the airport.

  • Overnight hotel stays in the port city on arrival or before returning home, if needed.

A few items are not included in the fare and will incur an additional cost:

  • Meals or accommodations while on shore.

  • Some shore excursions.

  • Reservation fees for select restaurants.

  • Laundry service.

  • Personal spa or beauty services.

Silversea loyalty program: Venetian Society

Unlike other cruise loyalty programs, Silversea’s program — the Venetian Society — does not award points. It doesn’t have elite status tiers, either. Instead, members earn “days” based on the length of each sailing. The more days they accrue, the more benefits they can receive.

Here’s what Venetian Society members can expect to receive based on the number of days accrued:

  • All members. By joining the program and completing your first sailing, you’re eligible for 5% savings on certain upcoming sailings. This can represent great value on expensive cruises, meaning signing up makes sense even if you only plan to sail occasionally.

  • 100+ days. 5% savings on all future door-to-door sailings.

  • 250+ days. 10% savings on all future door-to-door sailings.

  • 350 days. Once you reach this level, you are eligible for one complimentary seven-day sailing.

  • 500 days. Reaching this milestone means enjoying a complimentary 14-day trip.

  • 500+ days. After this landmark, members will receive one complimentary seven-day trip for each additional 150 days they sail.

How to redeem Silversea days

The best part about the Venetian Society is that the benefits are cumulative. It’s not similar to a points program where once you redeem points, your balance gets lower until you earn more. With Venetian Society, you can take advantage of that perk once you hit the next milestone while enjoying previous bonuses.

For example, once you hit 350 days, you are eligible for a complimentary seven-day voyage. But, you can also take 10% off any door-to-door cruises — a perk you receive after reaching 250 days — you book after that.

Frequently asked questions

Does Silversea have free Wi-Fi?

Yes. Like most of its onboard amenities, Silversea cruises include basic Wi-Fi free of charge. Those in upper suites will receive free premium Wi-Fi speeds, and other guests can pay for a faster speed package. The prices vary by sailing and ship.

Is Silversea all-inclusive?

Yes, everything is included in the “port-to-port” fare. Adding airfare and ground transfers is part of the “door-to-door” offering.

How much is the Silversea drink package?

Drinks are included in the all-inclusive fare, so no additional drink package is offered.

Does Silversea require a covid vaccine or test?

No, but some destinations may have their requirements. For example, there may be some destinations or embarkation points where unvaccinated travelers must provide a negative covid test, and vaccinated travelers would have to show proof of receiving the vaccine. All requirements and protocols are subject to change.

Purchases made with merchants that provide dining related goods or services such as restaurants or bars located within another establishment (e.g., inside a hotel, casino, amusement parks, airport, or event venue), at cafeterias, catering, vending machines, convenience stores, food courts, and food trucks may not qualify for this offer if a merchant does not submit transactions using the anticipated MCC associated with qualifying dining categories.

Our Verdict

These are nice earn rates, just beware of the $2,000/$12,000 limits. The Dining version seems to have been more widely sent out than the Dining + Travel version.

Apache is functioning normally

August 4, 2023 by Brett Tams

Travelers are flocking away from overcrowded airport terminals and into airport lounges. And so, these lounges have a problem. The exclusive spaces that purportedly offer a refuge from packed airports have become just as chaotic as the general terminals.

Overrated or not, airport lounges still tend to stand superior to most airport terminals. In a lounge, travelers can at least munch on a cheese cube without boarding announcements blaring from the loudspeaker.

As a result, people go to great lengths to enter them. They pay hundreds of dollars in annual fees for credit cards that offer lounge access. They linger outside lounges until their names are off the waitlist.

But now, lounge operators have had to step in to reduce overcrowding. Many lounges often have standing room only, while other lounges enforce entry waitlists to prevent the problem entirely. In 2023, Delta Sky Club increased membership and guest fees and put a limit on how many hours people can spend in the lounge. Meanwhile, American Express made its Centurion Lounge guest policy more stringent to cut back on how many people can gain access.

The problem isn’t so much an obsession with airport lounges. Instead, it’s that most U.S. airport terminals are abysmal for a variety of reasons.

Reduced resources and dated design impact terminals

U.S. airports have a backlog of both approved and necessary infrastructure improvements that’s projected to cost $151 billion, according to Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA), an airport trade association that represents about 300 airports in the U.S. and Canada. That’s a 31% increase from the $115 billion backlog cited in 2021. ACI-NA has pointed to inflation as one reason that figure ballooned.

A key revenue source for airport upkeep and maintenance is a passenger facility charge, which Congress capped at $4.50 per ticket. When the charge was introduced in 1992, it was just $3, but the charge hasn’t been increased since 2001.

For context, $4.50 in 2001 would be more than $7.50 today, according to the consumer price index, giving some reason to believe that the cap should be increased to align with today’s equivalent purchasing power.

When the COVID-19 pandemic cut travel, airports lost income from reduced passenger facility charges, as well as other revenue streams like parking and rental car fees, retail sales and concessions. Even with funding, implementing airport improvements can be slow.

“Overregulation of airport land use decisions have delayed project approvals,” according to the ACI-NA’s 2023 U.S. Airport Infrastructure Needs Report.

Airport design significantly changed after 9/11. The establishment of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in November 2001 led to a greater physical footprint for security checkpoints. Unpredictable queues have also increased the number of people in airports, as passengers who might previously have shown up 30 minutes before boarding now arrive much earlier, with hours to spare.

How to make U.S. airports better

If funding weren’t an issue, what improvements could make airport terminals more appealing than lounges?

Activities to pass the time

Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport won a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice award as one of the country’s top attractions. The airport has a seven-story indoor waterfall, a rock wall and a hedge maze.

Airports don’t need to resemble a runway-lined Disneyland, but the best ones have amenities that are especially relevant during long flight delays, like yoga rooms, live music and museums.

Higher ceilings and bigger windows

Not every airport has the benefit of sitting within Grand Teton National Park, but Wyoming’s Jackson Hole Airport — considered one of America’s most charming airports — takes full advantage with soaring windows that frame the mountain range.

Even without picturesque views, other airports could curtail traveler anxiety and claustrophobia with higher ceilings and outdoor seating. Delta Sky Clubs’ Sky Decks are a good example of how airports could build a compelling outdoor space.

Quiet airport programs

In 2018, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) launched a Quiet Airport program. It cut back on sounds emitted from retailers and gate agents, including a reduction in audio paging and boarding announcements for passengers.

Within two years of implementation, SFO officials said that more than 90 minutes of unnecessary announcements had been eliminated daily in its international terminal alone, which they claim makes air travel less stressful for passengers.

Better food

Starbucks and Sbarro might be concession staples, but the best airports are foodie destinations. The 2023 Global Tastemakers Awards from Food & Wine magazine named SFO the winner of Best Airport for Food in America. SFO hosts outposts of beloved local joints, including Ritual Coffee and vegetarian fast food favorite, Amy’s Drive Thru (its owners also run the organic frozen food brand Amy’s Kitchen).

Even if the meals aren’t free (as they typically are in airport lounges), an order of Amy’s mac and cheese — whether the real stuff or vegan — is probably better than a cube of lounge cheese.

Sadly, these examples are the exception, not the norm. For now, options aren’t exactly promising for air travelers — either at crowded and chaotic airport terminals or crowded and chaotic airport lounges.

American Express is notoriously secretive about the details of the Centurion Black Card. For many years, the company didn’t acknowledge the existence of the Black Card. And there’s some evidence that the card became a part of pop culture lore before becoming an actual product.

But today, the Centurion Card very much exists as a product for a select group of high net worth individuals willing to shell out a generous sum of money to carry perhaps the most exclusive credit card out there.

Here are 10 things we know about the AmEx Centurion Card.

1. The Centurion Black Card is invitation-only

You don’t get the Centurion Card by applying for it.

If you want to join the exclusive club of cardholders who carry the Centurion Black Card, you must get an invitation from AmEx. And a Centurion Card invitation isn’t something AmEx hands out lightly. While AmEx services over 100 million cardholders, there are estimates that AmEx only has 100,000 Centurion cardholders worldwide.

2. It will cost you $10,000 to get one

The Centurion Card carries a hefty initiation fee. Reports vary, but the most recent information is that AmEx charges $10,000 to become a Centurion member.

You might think paying a five-figure fee would be enough to grant you a lifetime of benefits, but not with the Centurion Card.

If you want to keep the card, you’ll have to shell out $5,000 per year. And that annual fee is not waived in the first year.

3. You can request a Centurion Card invite online

While the Centurion Black Card is invite-only, it is possible to request an invitation online. You must have an AmEx card to make the request. AmEx also clearly states that an invitation request does not mean you will receive an invitation.

4. You need to be a big spender to get a Centurion Black Card

It is widely accepted that you need to be a big spender for AmEx to give you a Centurion Card.

Reports on the internet range from requiring $250,000 to over a million dollars of annual spending. AmEx has not confirmed any specific spending requirements, and there’s no known threshold at which Platinum cardmembers receive an invitation.

While the exact amount you need to spend on your cards is a matter of speculation, you probably need to spend at least six figures annually on an AmEx card to get a Centurion Card.

5. Centurion Cardmembers still get to bring guests into the Centurion lounge

Centurion cardmembers didn’t suffer this cut and still retain expanded access. Centurion cardmembers may bring in two guests or immediate family members. Eligible immediate family members include a spouse, a domestic partner and children under 18.

6. The Centurion Black Card offers an unbelievable level of concierge service

For the multimillionaires and billionaires who carry the AmEx Centurion Card, probably the most helpful benefit is the Centurion concierge.

The concierge service offered on The Platinum Card® from American Express is limited to helping with travel reservations, getting event tickets, making restaurant reservations and fulfilling shopping requests. The concierge service offered by the Centurion Card offers seemingly unlimited service.

Centurion cardholders report using the Centurion concierge for things you might expect. One cardholder says that his concierge makes travel bookings considering his seat preferences based on the airline cabin configuration. His concierge also contacts hotels to inform them of the cardmember’s arrival time.

But Centurion concierges have also handled requests such as arranging elaborate tours, getting front-row tickets for in-demand concerts, locating personal items lost during travel and even arranging emergency evacuations.

For someone who might not have a full-time personal assistant, the Centurion concierge can offer an alternative.

7. AmEx offers Centurion cardmembers exclusive perks

Like many other things about the Centurion Black Card, the card’s perks are shrouded in secrecy. AmEx doesn’t provide much information about the card on its website and most reports about the card’s perks are based on third-hand accounts and speculation.

However, we have confirmed a partial list of benefits offered to Centurion cardmembers. Here are some of these exclusive benefits:

  • An auto program that allows cardmembers to anonymously negotiate prices on luxury automobile purchases through a members-only website.

  • Global chef partnerships, which grant access to daily table reservations at fine dining restaurants around the world.

  • Exclusive seating in ticket blocks reserved for Centurion cardholders at many major events worldwide.

  • Various onboard credits, excursion credits and vouchers are available exclusively to Centurion cardmembers through Centurion Cruise Partners.

  • Private jet arrangements can be made for Centurion cardholders through the AmEx Private Jet program.

8. Yes, you can buy a mansion or a private jet on a Centurion Card

Like many aspects of the Centurion Black Card, the card’s purchasing power has been the subject of much speculation. The card offers no preset limit, but how far does that go? While there are no credible reports of someone buying a Gulfstream or even a Cessna Citation (private jet) with a Centurion Card, the card has been used for some substantial purchases.

In 2015, The New York Times reported that Chinese billionaire Liu Yiqian purchased a Modigliani painting at Christie’s auction house in New York. The price? $170.4 million. If you can put a $170 million painting on an AmEx card, why not a jet or a mansion?

9. You can get many of the Centurion Card’s perks from The Platinum Card® from American Express

Many of the perks offered by the AmEx Centurion Card can be had with The Platinum Card® from American Express, a card that carries a much more affordable $695 annual fee compared to its counterpart. Here are some of the perks that the Centurion Card shares with The Platinum Card® from American Express:

  • The Global Lounge Collection grants access to 1,400 airport lounges across 140 countries.

  • The AmEx International Airline Program offers preferred airfares with participating airlines.

  • Presale ticket access.

And just like The Platinum Card® from American Express, the Centurion Card earns Membership Rewards, which can be transferred to any of AmEx’s transfer partners.

Terms apply.

10. You can get better rewards on many other cards

The AmEx Centurion Card isn’t the card to get if you want to earn the maximum rewards on your spending. And even if it were, you’d have to chase a lot of category spending to compensate for the card’s annual fee.

If you’re looking for generous rewards on your spending, consider a card that earns 2% cash back on all purchases. Many of these cards have no annual fee.
