The cost of carrying gold in your wallet is about to get more expensive.
As of July 25, 2024, the annual fee on the American Express® Gold Card is increasing to $325, up from $250. Terms apply; see rates and fees. Existing cardholders will see the annual fee increase starting Oct. 1, 2024.
Accompanying the higher annual fee are new dining-based perks; an annual cap on qualifying bonus spending at restaurants; the ability to select a limited-edition card design; and a shake-up of the merchants where the card’s monthly dining credit can be used.
Through Nov. 6, 2024, new cardholders can also grab an enhanced welcome offer.
Here’s what you should know.
What’s new with the American Express® Gold Card?
The American Express® Gold Card hasn’t had an overhaul this significant since 2018, when it increased its annual fee to $250 (from $195) and added more rewards and goodies. Here’s what’s changing this time:
Annual fee: Increase to $325 (up from $250).
Increased welcome bonus: From July 25 to Nov. 6, 2024, new cardholders can earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points, plus 20% back on restaurant spending worldwide (up to $100) after spending $6,000 on eligible purchases on your new card in your first 6 months of card membership
New cap on bonus rewards at restaurants: Cardholders will receive 4x points on dining purchases worldwide (including takeout and delivery) on up to $50,000 in annual spending. Purchases above the cap will earn 1x point. Previously, there was no spending cap in this category.
New $50 semiannual Resy credit: Get $100 in annual statement credits, issued as two $50 semiannual credits, after enrolling and using your card on eligible purchases at U.S. restaurants on the Resy app or on Resy.com.
New $7-per-month Dunkin’ credit: Receive $7 per month in statement credits after enrolling and using your card at Dunkin’ Donuts locations in the U.S.
Updated $10-per-month dining credit: Five Guys is now an eligible restaurant for the $10-per-month ($120 annual) dining credit, adding to the existing list of Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Wine.com and Goldbelly. Milk Bar and Shake Shack have been removed as eligible restaurants for the dining credit.
New card design: New cardholders can select a limited-edition white-gold card design (while supplies last), in addition to the existing gold and rose gold design options.
Terms apply.
What’s staying the same?
New and current cardholders will continue to enjoy the card’s existing credits and benefits, including:
$10 per month in Uber Cash credits (up to $120 annually) toward Uber Eats or Uber rideshares.
4x points at restaurants worldwide (now with the $50,000 annual cap).
4x points at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000 in purchases per year.
3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or AmEx Travel.
Terms apply.
What it means for cardholders
The new $325 annual fee represents a 30% increase over the previous fee of $250. (The fee increase in 2018 represented a 28% hike.) Whether these new changes are worth that much will depend on your spending habits and how well you actively manage your card to take advantage of the recurring credits. The new perks follow the coupon-book model American Express is using to offer more perceived value at a higher cost for their premium cards, like the American Express® Gold Card and the The Platinum Card® from American Express. However, adding more benefits for specific merchants makes the card more complex to optimize for some.
That said, the new welcome offer should suit many people well. Maximizing the 20% cash back on restaurant spending (up to $100) would require only $500 eligible dining expenses, and 60,000 points could take you far. NerdWallet values American Express Membership Rewards points at between 1 cent and 2.8 cents each (depending on how you redeem them). Between the points and the dining incentive, you could easily cover the annual fee for the first year before accounting for any additional monthly or semiannual credits.
According to NerdWallet’s 2024 Summer Travel Report, Americans who plan to travel this summer expect to spend $3,594, on average, on airfare or hotel expenses on their vacations. If you and your partner want to get away on a budget, you’ll need to choose your destination wisely.
Fortunately, there are many cheap romantic getaways that can help you cut costs without sacrificing romance and quality experiences. Here are five vacation ideas for couples to spark your wanderlust.
1. New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans offers a vibrant culture, nightlife and historical sites for visiting couples on a budget. Once you’ve settled in upon arrival, start your visit with beignets at the iconic Cafe Du Monde. This deep-fried pastry is generously smothered in powdered sugar, and one order includes three pieces for $3.85.
From there, take a leisurely stroll through the French Market, and ride a street car for only $1.25 per person to take you to your next activity.
During New Orleans’ peak season of February through May, you can still find many hotels in the French Quarter, the city’s oldest and most historic neighborhood, at less than $150 per night.
Other affordable things to do: Catch a live street performance of jazz music on Frenchmen Street, see the architecture of the St. Louis Cathedral for free or take a self-guided walking tour of the Garden District.
2. Portland, Oregon
Outdoorsy couples will love the abundant greenery, trails and waterfalls that Portland, Oregon, has to offer. For instance, Forest Park — located within city limits — overlooks the Willamette River and is home to more than 80 miles of lush trails.
Couples who prefer staying on pavement also can appreciate the city’s unique sights. Visit the International Rose Test Garden which has more than 610 rose varieties, or thumb through books at Powell’s City of Books, the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world.
Hotel accommodations in Portland at the start of the peak season in late June are below $150 per night. For the most frugal couples, there are also plenty of private and intimate Airbnb options for under $100 per night.
Other affordable things to do: Visit Hoyt Arboretum, go biking along the Willamette River or go food truck hopping for affordable bites.
3. Key West, Florida
It’s no surprise that summertime is a popular period of the year to soak in the tropical vibes and coastline of Key West, Florida, with your significant other. You can have a relaxing picnic on the sand for two and then go snorkeling at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park.
When you’re back on land, wander through the historic Old Town together and consider visiting the unique Key West Shipwreck Museum, which starts from $17.99 per person.
Like many beach destinations during peak season, hotel stays can be pricey. However, some Key West accommodations, like the Hilton Garden Inn Key West Hotel, offer summer rates under $200 per night.
🤓Nerdy Tip
Several co-branded Hilton credit cards are available, including one without an annual fee, and offer perks like automatic elite status in the Hilton Honors program.
Other affordable things to do: Watch a pink sunset at Mallory Square (a waterfront plaza), visit the Ernest Hemingway House Museum or take a commemorative photo at the Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S.A. buoy.
4. Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada
If the idea of staying in a cozy cabin or lodge is more your pace, some of the best cheap romantic getaways can be found in the towns surrounding Lake Tahoe, which sits across the California and Nevada state lines. You’ll enjoy scenic views of the Sierra Nevada mountains and the lake’s crystal waters.
Riding the Heavenly Gondola offers breathtaking 360-degree views, if you’re willing to budget $75 per person for a round-trip ticket. If you would rather be in nature than above it, plan a picnic or take a guided tour at Emerald Bay State Park.
For an ethereal and minimalist experience, spend a night stargazing together to end your day with tranquility.
Wherever you’re looking for hotels around the lake, you can typically find accommodations under $150 per night.
Other affordable things to do: Hike Eagle Falls Trails, which ends at a waterfall, sunbathe and swim at Zephyr Cove, or visit Truckee Thursdays Summer Street Festival.
5. Albuquerque, New Mexico
If you’re planning a cheap vacation for couples in the fall, Albuquerque, New Mexico, can be a romantic destination. During the first full week of October, hundreds of hot air balloons take flight for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
A hot air balloon ride can be costly (about $275 per person), but general admission tickets are just $15 per person, per session, which is typically half-day access on any day of the Fiesta.
You’ll find many hotels and other accommodations that are reasonably priced at less than $150 per night during the event.
Other affordable things to do: Walk through the shops and art galleries in the city’s Old Town neighborhood, birdwatch at the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park or learn about local cultures at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Hilton’s best hotels in Maui
Similar to Hyatt, Hilton also has a small footprint on Maui with only four hotels (although Hilton is opening a fifth hotel in June 2025).
If you’re looking to book a Hilton hotel with points on Maui, the Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort has the honor of not only being the best overall hotel to book on Maui with points, but also being the best luxury hotel and family hotel.
Best overall Hilton points on Maui: Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort

The Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort is a massive property, sitting on 40 acres with 844 rooms (of which 57 are suites and 50 are villas) that range in size from 640 square feet to 1,300 square feet. The hotel is perhaps best known for its Wailea Canyon Activity Pool, which is actually a collection of nine pools spanning 25,700 square feet that are connected by waterslides and a lazy river.
The Wailea Canyon Activity Pool is enough to make the Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort the best resort for families (and arguably the best hotel for families on the entire island of Maui).
Not only does the pool feature a lazy river and waterslides connecting the nine pools mentioned earlier, but it also features a Tarzan pool with rope swing, six waterfalls, caves, a sand “baby” beach and a swim-up bar for parents who need some time away from the kids. If you or your kids are more adventurous, you can enjoy the Lava Tube Slide, a three-story waterslide with 360-degree turns where you can reach speeds as fast as 22 miles per hour.
The hotel also offers a Grand Passport for kids. During check-in, children are given a passport that maps and lists all educational and cultural activities on the island to keep them engaged during their stay.
After a day at the pool, be sure to make reservations for dinner at Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, the hotel’s signature beachfront restaurant that specializes in seafood.
Rooms at the Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort start at 110,000 Hilton points per night.
While Hilton does have another luxury option on Maui, Ho’olei Villas at Grand Wailea, rooms at that hotel will set you back around 574,000 points per night. Given that you can stay at the Grand Wailea for 110,000 points per night, the Grand Wailea wins as the best Hilton points hotel on Maui for a luxury experience.

Everybody loves a relaxing vacation, but the chaotic nature of an airport terminal can induce anxiety in even the most zen of travelers. Loudspeaker announcements, beeping golf carts and crying children create a cacophony — wouldn’t it be nice to wait for your flight in a peaceful environment instead? Enter airport lounges.
Hanging out in an airport lounge before a trip or on a long layover can enhance your travel experience by a mile. And these havens aren’t just for those flying in fancy cabins.
What are airport lounges?
Airport lounges are quiet areas inside the terminal where passengers can relax before a flight or during a layover, eat snacks, work using the lounge’s Wi-Fi network, and sometimes even shower. Typically only paying members, passengers flying in business or first class, or cardholders of certain travel cards are allowed access. Here’s how to get in to airport lounges.
How to get in to airport lounges
There are six ways to get access to airport lounges.
1. Fly in a premium cabin
One of the most reliable ways to get airport lounge access is to fly in first or business class (typically on international routes and select transcontinental flights). This may sound like an expensive way to access a lounge, but if you purchase your flight with airline miles, your ticket still grants you entry to a lounge — either the one for your carrier or for one of its partners.
2. Reach elite status with an airline loyalty program
Frequent flyers are typically rewarded for their loyalty, and if you fly enough with one carrier or multiple carriers in the same alliance, you can enter airline lounges when flying on select routes.
For example, Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro or Platinum elite members of the American Airlines AAdvantage program can enter an Admirals Club on departure or arrival on qualifying international flights operated by American or Oneworld partners, even if they fly economy — and they can bring one guest with them.
Additionally, if you reach status with an alliance, which usually requires earning status with a specific airline, you’re able to get free airport lounge access when flying on a member airline.
3. Purchase a day pass
Another option for accessing an airport lounge is to pay for it.
United Airlines sells one-time passes that allow you to enter a United Club a single time, either before your flight or on a layover. Alaska Airlines also sells single-entry passes to passengers wishing to enter an Alaska Lounge. American Airlines sells day passes that are valid for 24 hours and allow you to enter multiple Admirals Clubs within that period.
Here’s how much airline lounge access will cost you with the following carriers:
Alaska — $60.
American — $79 or 7,900 AAdvantage miles.
United — $59.
Delta Air Lines no longer sells single-visit passes to Delta Sky Clubs, and annual membership is available to Medallion members only, meaning holding certain credit cards is the only way to access Delta lounges for general SkyMiles members (more on that later).
4. Purchase an annual membership
If you’re a frequent traveler, buying an annual lounge membership instead of repeatedly buying day passes can make sense. Of course, the value will depend on how often you fly with that specific airline.
Let’s take a look at how much an annual airline lounge membership will cost for individual, non-elite status flyers.
Alaska — $550.
American — $850 or 85,000 AAdvantage miles.
Delta — $695 or 69,500 SkyMiles.
United — $650 or 85,000 MileagePlus miles.
So, for example, if you’re going to fly round-trip with United six times in a year (12 individual flights), buying a day pass to the lounge each time would cost you $708 total ($59 x 12); an annual membership at $650 would be a better deal.
5. Present your military ID
Sometimes, being a military member can get you access to airport lounges. For example, the USO airport lounges are designed for active-duty service members and their families who are stationed around the globe.
Additionally, some airline lounges, like Admirals Clubs, offer complimentary access to U.S. military personnel in uniform traveling on American Airlines flights. United also provides complimentary access to U.S. military personnel at its United Club locations.
6. Open a credit card with airport lounge access
Many premium cards on the market offer some kind of lounge access to cardmembers. Premium co-branded airline cards typically offer access to the respective airlines’ lounges, and bank cards typically offer access to their own lounges and to lounges in the Priority Pass network.
Travel cards that give you lounge access
Let’s take a look at some of the best credit cards with lounge access.

Kudos Review 2024
Below is my Kudos review.
What is Kudos?
Kudos (also known as Kudos Technologies, Inc.) is a helpful AI-powered browser extension and app designed to help you make the most of your credit cards, particularly when shopping online. It was founded by Tikue Anazodo and Ahmad Ismail, and Kudos has been featured on Forbes, Yahoo Finance, Bloomberg, The Motley Fool, Nasdaq, and more.
Think of it as a smart wallet for your browser. Driven by the complex world of credit card rewards, the Kudos team created this tool to simplify the process.
Here’s how it shines: Select the cards you commonly use (without the need for any sensitive bank details) and Kudos tells you which one to use at checkout. You see, your cards might be packed with potential rewards for different spending categories—travel, groceries, or dining.
Different credit cards have so many different benefits (such as the rewards percentage, extended warranties, purchase protection, insurance, and more), which can be difficult to keep track of.
Kudos makes sure you’re using the best card possible to earn the most rewards, which is especially useful if you have more than one rewards credit card.
Members have collectively earned over $150 million in rewards with Kudos. On a personal level, you could boost your annual shopping rewards by an average of $750 just by using Kudos.
Plus, Kudos is super user-friendly. You can add it to your preferred desktop browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge) or use it on your iPhone, and it’s completely free. The service makes money by earning a small commission when you shop at participating stores or sign up for a card through their recommendations.
When you shop without Kudos, you could be missing out on opportunities to earn rewards with your purchases. Why miss out on potential earnings when Kudos provides a free and simple solution?
Kudos also has a really helpful Instagram account full of helpful credit card tips. I highly recommend checking that out here.
How Kudos works
Imagine you’re online shopping, ready to checkout, and you pause, thinking, which credit card do I use? That’s where Kudos steps in, always there to give you the best advice.
Kudos knows your cards and suggests which one to use at checkout. But how? First, you add your credit cards to the Kudos wallet. It’s safe and simple. When it’s time to buy something, Kudos pops up and says, “Hey, use this card!” Why? Because it’s the card that will give you the most rewards or savings for that purchase.
Here are the steps to get started:
Download the Kudos browser extension (takes less than a minute to do) on your desktop browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge) or iPhone. You’ll also answer basic questions like your name and the type of credit card you have (such as the Chase Freedom card).
Shop like you normally do.
Once you’re ready to checkout, Kudos will automatically appear to let you know which credit card you should use to get the most rewards and benefits.
Click the card you want to use and Kudos will then autofill the card info, making checkout a breeze.
What stores does Kudos work on?
Kudos works at over 2 million online stores and with over 3,000 credit cards – so there’s a very good chance that it’ll work for you.
Don’t see a store supported or can’t find your card? Their support team is super responsive and will help you out!
After I told Kudos what credit card I wanted to add, the site then told me what benefits I have.
Kudos vs. other rewards tools: What sets Kudos apart?
When it comes to maximizing credit card rewards, Kudos stands out from other popular tools like Rakuten, Honey, and Capital One Shopping.
While these platforms primarily focus on providing cashback offers or coupon codes, Kudos takes a more comprehensive approach to optimize your entire credit card strategy.
What sets Kudos apart is its AI-powered technology that analyzes your specific credit cards and spending habits to recommend the best card for each purchase.
This makes sure that you’re not only earning cashback but also maximizing your points, miles, and other card-specific perks. By considering factors like bonus categories, statement credits, and exclusive benefits, Kudos helps you get the most value out of your credit cards.
Key Features of Kudos
When shopping online, you want to stretch your dollar as far as it can go. Kudos has features that make this easy by helping you get the most out of your credit cards such as:
Maximize your credit card rewards
When you’re shopping online, Kudos helps you pick the best card to use to maximize your rewards and benefits.
With Kudos, you no longer have to guess which credit card to use. This AI-powered wallet automatically recommends the best card for each purchase, making sure you always receive the highest cashback, points, or miles possible.
I personally didn’t even know that one of my credit cards had some of the benefits that Kudos listed, and I can’t believe I had been wasting so much money by skipping out on such a valuable benefit! Kudos makes it very easy for me to see my card’s benefits all in one easy place.
Plus, if you’d like, you can add your credit card information to Kudos, and Kudos will autofill your card info (including CCV) to make checking out fast.
Another way that Kudos helps you earn more rewards is because Kudos helps you build your Dream Wallet so you can get the most out of your everyday purchases. You’ll go through a quick quiz to help Kudos gather information about your needs.
Double your rewards with Kudos Boost
With Kudos, you can increase the amount you can get in credit card rewards with just one click.
If you usually earn 4% cash back when shopping at sites like Walmart or Sephora, you’ll now earn a total of 8% back with Kudos Boost. The best part? You can earn Boost at participating stores even if your card doesn’t offer its own rewards.
Kudos Boost are reward points you earn by shopping at Boost merchants.
It works like this:
Shop at one of Kudos’ 15,000 participating Boost merchants
Click “Activate Boost” on the bottom right corner of the screen
Use Kudos at checkout – At checkout, Kudos will find your best credit card to use, autofill the payment forms, and match your credit card rewards.
Redeem rewards for a gift card
You’ll receive an email from Kudos around 1-2 days after completing an eligible transaction. After the store confirms your purchase it usually takes between 60 to 120 days for your rewards to be available, and you can then find your rewards on your Activity page on Kudos.
When you’ve earned 1,000 Kudos Boost points (equal to $10.00 USD), you can exchange them for an Amazon gift card.
Receive personalized credit card recommendations
Stop wasting time opening up credit card application pages on incognito. You can receive access to elevated card offers on Kudos’ Explore Tool through their partnership with The Points Guy.
So, if you are looking for a new credit card, use Kudos to help filter the best one for you and your situation and compare different cards in one easy place.
For example, Kudos member Christina L. was able to get 150,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $6,000 on the Amex Platinum card within the first three months of account opening. That’s almost double the 80,000 points after spending $8,000 found on the American Express website!

Do you use Kudos? What other questions do you have for this Kudos review?
Eurostar offers high-speed train travel between the U.K., Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Germany. Its trains can reach 186 mph, which means a train from London to Paris takes only 2 hours and 16 minutes. Eurostar merged with Thalys — another European high-speed train company — in 2023.
Taking a Eurostar train between these five countries can be more seamless than flying because you get a solid baggage allowance and don’t need to deal with airports, liquid restrictions in your carry-on and long security lines.
Here’s what you need to know about Eurostar’s destinations, cabin classes, lounges, loyalty program, amenities and pricing.
Destinations
Eurostar offers direct train service to London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Netherlands. For all other destinations, you must connect to a different train, potentially with another carrier.
The fastest train journeys are the following:
Paris to Brussels – 1 hour, 22 minutes.
London to Lille, France – 1 hour, 22 minutes.
London to Brussels – 1 hour, 53 minutes.
Brussels to Amsterdam – 1 hour, 53 minutes.
London to Paris – 2 hours, 16 minutes.
London to Rotterdam – 3 hours, 13 minutes.
Paris to Amsterdam – 3 hours, 20 minutes.
Paris to Cologne – 3 hours, 20 minutes.
London to Amsterdam – 3 hours, 52 minutes.
Depending on where you’re headed, taking the train may take less total time than flying. For example, the train from London to Paris takes 2 hours and 16 minutes, while a flight takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. Though the train takes almost an hour longer, other factors involved with flying, including early airport arrival, travel time to/from the airport, security and boarding, make the train the faster option.
The Eurostar operates out of St. Pancras International Station, located in central London and easily accessible by several tube (underground) lines and buses. By contrast, London’s main airports, Heathrow Airport and London Gatwick Airport, are located outside the city and can take an hour or more to get to depending on where you’re traveling from and your mode of transport.
Furthermore, Eurostar’s rules are arguably more traveler-friendly than those of airlines. On even the cheapest tickets, Eurostar allows adults to bring two pieces of luggage and one carry-on with no weight limit. Children can bring one piece of luggage and one carry-on.
You also don’t have to worry about paying for a seat or dealing with liquid restrictions. You can make fee-free changes to your ticket as many times as you like until seven days before departure. Ticket changes within seven days of departure incur a $40 fee unless you’re in Business Premier.
Club Eurostar
Club Eurostar is Eurostoar’s loyalty program and you can sign up for a free account to start earning points. You earn 1 point per $1 spent on Eurostar tickets. Train + hotel packages also earn points, albeit at a lower rate (1 point per $2).
Eurostar has four membership levels, and with each increasing level you earn more points on travel and get access to additional perks.
Carte Blanche
Points required
Bonus points on tickets
All levels can pool points with friends and family, use points to pay a portion of their tickets and upgrade their seats from Standard to Standard Premier/Comfort. If you’re going for elite status with Eurostar, the biggest advantages are companion vouchers, lounge access and priority benefits when traveling.
Rewards can be used for as low as 100 points on various experiences from free tickets to upgrades.
Eurostar travel classes

Eurostar offers different travel classes, and these travel classes vary by destination. All trains offer Wi-Fi, but in my experience, the Wi-Fi has been awful, with upload and download speeds of less than 1 Mbps.
Trains to/from London
A Eurostar train to/from London offers three travel classes: Standard, Standard Premier and Business Premier. All seats offer U.K. and EU plug sockets. You can also choose your seat when traveling on this route.
Standard: This travel class offers the lowest priced tickets and food and drinks are available for purchase.
Standard Premier: You get free magazines and a more spacious seat, along with a light meal and drinks.
Business Premier: You get the same seat as in Standard Premier, plus additional perks including three pieces of luggage, a carry-on, hot meals created by Raymond Blanc OBE served with champagne, free newspapers and magazines and a dedicated fast-track ticket gate. You also get access to Eurostar lounges and NS International lounges.
Trains between Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany
Premium seats on the train from Brussels to Amsterdam. (Photo by Elina Geller)
When traveling between Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany, there are three travel classes: Standard, Comfort and Premium. All seats include EU plug sockets.
You also have access to Eurostar’s taxi booking service, which allows you to arrange transport to/from the train station. Unfortunately you cannot choose your seat when traveling between these destinations.
Standard: This travel class has the cheapest tickets. Food and drinks are not included but can be purchased onboard.
Comfort: You get a more spacious seat, but still need to pay for food and drinks. Comfort seats have access to premium Wi-Fi, but I found that Wi-Fi to be just as slow as in Standard class.
Premium: You have the same seat as in Comfort class and some additional perks including a gourmet cold meal served at your seat, access to Eurostar lounges and NS International lounges.
The Eurostar amenities you receive depend on which class you travel in. You receive a complimentary meal in Premium, Standard Premier or Business Premier. Those in Business Premier (only available on London routes) receive three-course meals created in collaboration with Michelin-star chef Raymond Blanc OBE. Passengers in Premium get a meal designed by Belgian chef Frank Fol.
Passengers in other travel classes don’t receive a complimentary meal but can purchase drinks or snacks from the Eurostar Cafe.
Lounge access
Eurostar lounge in Brussels. (Photo by Elina Geller)
Travelers in Premium can visit the Eurostar lounge in Paris and Brussels, and NS International lounges in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Those traveling in Business Premier can use the lounge in London, Paris and Brussels.
Club Eurostar elites traveling on any fare class can access certain lounges depending on their elite status:
Avantage, Carte Blanche and Etoile members: Eurostar lounge in Brussels and Paris.
Carte Blanche and Etoile members: Eurostar lounge in London, Paris and Brussels; DB lounges in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Essen; NS International lounges in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Schiphol airport; Railteam lounges in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria.
Check each lounge’s information page for opening hours. Generally, you can expect to find various seating spaces, complimentary newspapers and magazines, free Wi-Fi as well as food and drinks to enjoy.
Eurostar allows you to book tickets up to 120 days in advance, and the sooner you book the better. You’ll generally find the cheapest tickets on Tuesday and Wednesday. Since you can change your ticket fee-free as many times as you want until seven days before departure, you might as well book as soon as possible.
There are also special or discounted fares for the following groups:
Children under age 4
Kids ages 4-11
Passengers under 26 or over 60
Travelers in a group
Wheelchair passengers and companions
The availability of discounts depends on your destination, so you’ll want to check Eurostar’s page for guidance.

Still not sure?
You can pay in U.S. dollars when buying Eurostar tickets online. However, if you plan to buy anything on board the train, and you’ll be in Europe anyways, you’ll want to use a card that waives foreign transaction fees.
Is it cheaper to fly or take Eurostar?
The answer to this question depends on how far in advance you purchase your ticket, your day of travel, whether you need to pay for luggage, and the difference in costs between traveling to the airport and to a Eurostar train station.
Here’s a sampling of Eurostar fares in September 2024 from London to Paris.
Here’s a selection of flights from London to Paris on the same day.
Although the cheapest flight is $13 less than the train, bag fees are not included in that price. And since Eurostar stations are generally more centrally located, your overall cost may be cheaper on the train after factoring in a rideshare or taxi to the airport.
Eurostar recapped
Eurostar offers a convenient way to travel between the U.K., Belgium, Netherlands, France and Germany. If you’re deciding whether to fly or take a Eurostar, factor in the cost, travel time (including the time spent getting to and from the airport, as well as the time spent at the airport) and how many bags you’re bringing as part of your decision.
How to maximize your rewards
You want a travel credit card that prioritizes what’s important to you. Here are our picks for the best travel credit cards of 2024, including those best for:
Welcome offers make the first year you carry a credit card an especially lucrative one. After that, you’ll earn rewards for your spending, but nothing comes close to that influx of points worth potentially hundreds of dollars upon redemption.
However, a card’s terms and conditions might stop you from getting multiple new cardholder bonuses from the same issuer, which is the case for certain American Express cards. If you open a new AmEx card and earn a welcome bonus, you may not be able to earn a bonus from another AmEx-issued card within the same “family” later on.
Here’s how to navigate AmEx application rules when it comes to restrictions on new cardholder welcome offers.
AmEx card ‘families’
It helps to think of cards that offer similar benefits as “families.” A family of cards has a major thing in common, like what rewards currency they earn (travel points or cash back). They may all be part of a rewards program for a specific airline or hotel brand. Within families, you’ll find different tiers of cards. A more premium card will charge a higher annual fee in exchange for more rewards. A no-annual-fee card provides a lower-cost option, but that card won’t offer as many perks.
AmEx cards fall into several families, each with rules about how many bonuses you can get. If you’re ineligible to get a bonus, you’ll get a notification before your application is processed, so you can decide at that point whether or not to proceed.
These are the AmEx card families.
Membership Rewards cards
A number of AmEx cards earn Membership Rewards points, which can be redeemed for travel (including transfers to airline and hotel partners), statement credits, gift cards or purchases at participating merchants. There are two sub-families within this category:
For travel

What you can do
Choose your card carefully
If you can only get one welcome bonus per card family, go for the card with the biggest bonus available. That may mean stomaching a higher annual fee (and the annual fees on some of these cards are no joke), but if you choose a card with other perks you’ll actually use, you can get more value out of the card while you carry it.
You can opt to downgrade the pricier card later on to another member of the family with a lower annual fee if you’d like to keep your account open for a lower cost. You won’t earn another bonus this way, however.
Look for targeted offers
Anecdotally, consumers may receive targeted credit card offers from AmEx without this lifetime language, meaning you may be eligible for another bonus despite carrying another card in that family. These offers arrive randomly, so pay attention to what you get in the mail.
Ask for a retention bonus
If you’re considering canceling a card once the annual fee is due again, call the number on the back of your card and ask about retention offers. You’re shut out of bonuses on other similar AmEx cards, but perhaps a kindly customer service representative can convince you to hold onto the card you have now with a waived annual fee or some extra rewards points.
From Feb. 22 to May 22, 2024, certain American Express cardholders can earn elevated rewards if they refer a friend for their own AmEx card, and that person applies and is approved by May 22.
AmEx cardholders who meet the promotion requirements will get an additional 10x Membership Rewards or 10% cash back per dollar spent at restaurants worldwide. The new rewards rates are valid for 3 months, or up to $25,000 in purchases. (Terms apply.)
AmEx cardholders with the following cards are eligible for this offer:
Thanks to American Express’ flexible referral rules, referral recipients aren’t restricted to applying for a card within the same family as the referring friend. For example, if you receive a referral from someone with an AmEx card that earns cash back or Membership Rewards, you may apply for any personal or business AmEx card. However, when the referring cardholder has a co-branded card such as the Delta Gold, the referral recipient may apply only for a co-branded card in the same family.
Is this a good deal?
Earning an extra 10x rewards or 10% more cash back is a great opportunity, especially when those rewards can be had with minimal effort: Sending a referral is as easy as clicking a few buttons online or within the AmEx app. As long as the recipient is approved for the card they apply for, you’ll get that temporary rewards boost.
Say you have the American Express® Gold Card, which earns 4x Membership Rewards at restaurants. If you meet the terms of the referral offer, you’ll earn a stunning 14x on dining. Terms apply.
Those rewards can be redeemed in a number of ways, but you’ll likely get the better value by transferring them to one of AmEx’s travel partners. NerdWallet estimates that 1 Membership Reward is worth 2 cents when transferred.

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) is a collective of high-end properties that meet high standards for service and style. There are more than 500 boutique hotels in 90 countries that make the grade.
SLH will not become one of the many Hilton Honors brands, but the strategic partnership between the two unlocks the door to significantly more luxury properties than are currently in the Hilton portfolio.
For now, the details of using Hilton elite status benefits and credit card perks at SLH properties are still being ironed out, but Hilton members will soon be able to earn and redeem points at the participating luxury hotels.
What happens to the World of Hyatt partnership?
As Hilton Honors ramps up its partnership, World of Hyatt will end its connection with SLH. This comes on the heels of Hyatt’s new acquisition of travel club platform Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which gives World of Hyatt members plenty of opportunity to earn and redeem points at more than 1,500 luxury properties. Hilton will have an exclusive partnership with SLH.
9 Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties to look forward to booking with Hilton points
To book these new hotel options, Hilton Honors members can use any of Hilton’s traditional reservations channels to book a stay at participating SLH hotels. This includes earning and redeeming points, which multiply when you use a Hilton Honors co-branded credit card.
Hilton Honors is also a transfer partner of AmEx Membership Rewards. No matter which credit card you use, these are some of the exciting SLH options that may participate in the Hilton Honors partnership.
