Sustainability has been a buzz word in the home décor industry for years, but the types of eco-friendly practices and products that consumers gravitate towards change often. According to a 2023 study by NielsenIQ, 78 percent of U.S. consumers say that a sustainable lifestyle is important to them, and in a survey from digital supply chain company Blue Yonder, 69 percent of respondents said they would pay more for sustainable products. But, even though they are seeking out those sustainable products and brands, after so many years of pursuing “greener pastures” consumers have wised up to many of the greenwashing practices that have permeated the industry and marketing tactics.
Now, customers are doing their research before they align their dollars with sustainable and eco-friendly brands and products, and that means retailers need to do the same in 2024.
Authenticity First
Before carrying any eco-friendly products and brands, retailers should invest time into researching them just like their customers. Terms like green, eco-friendly, all-natural, earth-friendly, plant derived, organic — but not organic certified — and non-toxic can be used by manufacturers without meeting any legally required testing or standards.
Retailers should look for third-party certifications — examples include Fair Trade certified, Environmental Working Group Verified, B-Corp, Made Safe and Cradle to Cradle certifications— to be sure they are picking vetted products that meet basic industry standards for those labels. Transparency also goes along way when vetting new products and brands. Consumers gravitate towards brands that feel like they have nothing to hide, so brands that are willing to share their sustainability goals, production processes, and waste and recycling statistics, will continue to resonate with them in 2024.
Material World
Following the rise of biophilic design — or design trends that prioritize connections with nature — green home décor trends in 2024 will be founded on their materials. Sustainable natural materials like bamboo, cork, coconut, straw, cob and natural fabrics like hemp, wool and jute will be more popular because of their renewability, natural origins and — in some cases —recyclability over materials like resin and synthetic fibers. Real woods and stones will be less popular in this category because they are perceived as less renewable and/or recyclable. Carrying products made with recycled metals, plastics and other materials will be key in attracting eco-conscious consumers who want the look of synthetic materials like plastic. Repurposed objects — think newspapers, license plates, fabric scraps, discarded books, and deadstock wallpaper, carpeting, paint and fabric — will also make a big impact.
Demand for home decor products is surging as people are inclined to show their creativity through DIY activities. Consumers prefer sustainable options to decorate their home interiors because of growing concerns about environmental impacts.
NEWARK, Del, Oct. 05, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The home decor market is projected to register a valuation of US$ 216,291.4 million in 2023 and reach up to US$ 394,715.7 million by 2033. The global market is securing a CAGR of 6.2% during the forecast period.

“Schlotzsky’s Sandwich Studio Line” celebrates the legacy of the one iconic sandwich: The Original
KSNF/KODE — Thanks to a popular sandwich shop, you can take your home’s décor back to the ’70s — if you don’t mind that décor having a sandwich-centered theme.
Schlotzsky’s, the pioneer of “The Original” sandwich that has been popular with guests since 1971, is now venturing into the world of home décor with the launch of the Sandwich Studio Line.
Drawing inspiration from the iconic Original Sandwich and its staple ingredients — this collection embraces the 1970s — offering a blast from the past for sandwich lovers and interior design enthusiasts alike.
The Original was the very first menu item by Schlotzsky’s. It features ham, Genoa and Cotto salami, tomato, lettuce, onion, three cheeses, olives, mustard, and signature sauce on a sourdough baked bun. Now, The Original will transcend beyond the restaurant and into homes across America.

As locals who’ve struggled to find fresh sources for furnishings and décor can attest, any time the phrases “home goods” and “new store” are bandied about together, our ears instantly perk up. And when they come attached to an up-and-coming name in the interior design world, as they have in the case of designer Shaolin Low’s recently opened Woven by Shaolin boutique-showroom, we do more than pencil in a visit—we clear our schedules (and trunk space) and make a beeline down to get first picks.
“We had a lot of people contacting us, wanting some elements of what our interior design firm Studio Shaolin does,” says Low of the impetus for the shop’s opening. That included sourcing custom and ready-made furniture and home accents from B2B-exclusive brands usually only accessible to industry insiders. “I got enough of those calls over the last two years that I was like, clearly there’s a need here. It just made sense to start opening the curtains.”

The 1,200-square-foot space on the Target end of Hekili Street is equal parts vibrant and serene and brimming with chic home accessories smartly arranged in color-coordinated nooks. “My design aesthetic is very contemporary coastal—it’s bright, light, airy, cozy, comforting,” says Low. The mix includes everything from abstract vases and vintage-inspired glassware to squiggly candlesticks and pillows trimmed with pompoms. You’ll also find things for keiki, wellness products and playful gift items.

Separating it all are zones staged with furniture pieces and local artwork that Low and her team are currently loving, stocked in very limited numbers. “It’s basically a mix of our sample closet for our interior design business,” she says. Think modern-organic boucle dining chairs, rattan tables and cane accent chairs.
A portion of the space has been shaved off to house the design team’s office. The store’s opening marked the launch of Studio Shaolin’s newest offering—its mini design service, which provides clients with pared-back versions of its full services, starting at $750 for an individual room.

“I wanted to be able to service local families, families like mine with young children and young working moms who don’t have $100,000 to spend on their space,” says Low. “Oftentimes when people think of designers, they think of untouchable, high-end things that not everyone can have. And that’s the bubble that I’m trying to burst. With Woven by Shaolin, the intention was to open the gates for everyone.”

Hyderabad Bengaluru-based furnishing and décor art brand Purple Turtles has entered Hyderabad’s home décor market with the launch of its new store at Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad. Also, it has brought Beruru, its outdoor lifestyle brand for gardens and homes, to the city. The store open on 6,500 sft, has 6,000 exclusive indoor pieces and more than 1,000 pieces of different stock-keeping units (SKUs) for outdoor.
Besides the newly launched store in Hyderabad, the mid-premium brand has four stores in Bangalore and one in Chennai. The reclaimed and repurposed products are available from Rs 500 – 600 for table décor while the upper limit depends on its uniqueness which can cost Rs 4-5 lakh. The average price of the products available at the store is around Rs 30,000-40,000.
Radeesh Shetty, Founder, The Purple Turtles, said, “There are a lot of home décor brands in the city but not many are into curated products, especially from the yesteryears. People in Hyderabad are extremely home-proud. They spend a lot of time on doing the décor of their homes besides entertaining guests at their space. Our target customers are the discerning crowd who are well travelled and appreciate Indian art and craft.”
The total worth of the interior and outdoor home décor products available at this store is around Rs 4-5 crore wherein the founder has invested a total Rs 6 crore for setting up the new store. Purple Turtles has products sourced from Indian craftsmen including artifacts from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Shetty further said, “The percentage of people importing décor needs has reduced. There is lot of pride in buying local products. In Hyderabad, we have a demand for our lights, and antiques.”
The founder plans on entering new cities such as Mumbai, Goa and Calcutta, besides launching another store in Hyderabad in the next eight or 10 months. “The demand for real estate is growing in Hyderabad. So, our next option would be the Financial District where concentration of the young crowd is high,” Shetty added.

Karrie Trowbridge, the owner of Lark Mountain Modern, had never owned or worked in a home décor shop when she decided to purchase Lark from its original owners.
Lark opened in January of 2020 and soon after that, was forced to shut down due to the pandemic. The team decided to weather the storm by turning to online operations, creating a business that offered in-store pickup. As soon as the online store went live, customers went crazy, said store manager Liz Odell.
(Editor’s note: This story has been updated from the print edition to reflect that Trowbridge purchased the store from its original owners. We regret the errors).
Lark carries specialty home décor as well as furniture, soft goods like table linens and napkins, jewelry and gifts. According to Odell, the retail store attempts to source as many local and women-owned goods as they can.
In addition to the variety of items in the store, Odell mentioned that the prices range greatly as well. Shoppers can find décor and gifts for under $10.

“Anybody can come in and get something,” Odell said. The selection of upscale and carefully picked décor is something that Odell believes makes the store stand out. The location isn’t so bad either; on NW Wall Street in Bend. The downtown building that home décor shop sits in has housed several businesses before them. It was a men’s clothing store, a home goods store and, right before Lark, a record store.
Shoppers can find a variety of goods at Lark.

Odell and Trowbridge have been Bend locals for many years and believe the “mountain modern” décor fits Bend perfectly. “We know what Bend is. . . we love our customers and we love talking to them,” said Odell. The staff hopes that Lark is a place where people come in and feel a sense of happiness and beauty.
