Joanna Gaines took to Instagram at the weekend to announce the twenty-year anniversary celebratory event for her home and lifestyle brand, Magnolia, alongside co-founder and husband Chip Gaines.
As to be expected with Gaines’s visually-led Instagram content, the background in the video is much like the rest of her social content: full of home decor ideas and inspiration.
mid-century modern design. A style that’s seen a rise in popularity recently, with the likes of Emma Chamberlain’s LA home mastering the look, it’s a timeless style that celebrates the understated nature of design from the 1940s – ’60s era, while elevating and upgrading with more modern pieces.
The sofa shown in the video is very typical of mid-century design: low to the ground with an angular wooden frame, and complete with rich, forest-green upholstery. Whilst the sofa feels very representative of last century’s iconic design movement, we love the way that Gaines has uplifted the space with the addition of bold, modern pieces, most notably the coffee table.
Heather Humphrey, principal at interior design agency Alder and Tweed approves of Gaines’s choice of furniture, explaining: ‘This neutral living room blends modern pieces with traditional elements, creating a captivating juxtaposition that adds depth and character to the space.’
‘The interplay between sleek contemporary lines and the timeless charm of the classic design evokes a sense of intrigue and sophistication, adding personality to the room.’
marble coffee table, pictured in the video above, is a key trend piece this season, sculptural in form and to some extent a statement piece to center the living space around. Although bold and heavy, the addition of this piece offsets the sofa perfectly, ensuring the room doesn’t feel dated or too traditional.
The addition of a houseplant, in Gaines’s case a fiddle-leaf fig, brings the outdoors in and uplifts the space thanks to its rich and bright green color. When designing a room in a mid-century style, making sure to bring in plants such as this ensures the space feels bright, in comparison with the heavy, dark-toned wood that’s synonymous with the design era.
Shown above is another example of the designer’s interior styling and the use of lots of indoor greenery, this time one of the rooms in the married couple’s ‘The Castle’ project.

With its centuries-old weaving technique and organic textures, wicker offers a delightful way to infuse warmth and character into the living spaces of your home. From a coastal-inspired oasis to a bohemian retreat to a classic and inviting atmosphere, wicker seamlessly adapts to a diverse range of interior styles. In this Redfin article, we will explore the versatility and allure of wicker furniture, decor accents, and even textured wallpapers that can breathe new life into your home. So whether you’re looking to rent an apartment in Indianapolis or purchase a home in Charleston, discover the beauty of this age-old craftsmanship and uncover how wicker can elevate your home’s design.
What is wicker and how to apply it to your home
Wicker is a versatile and time-honored material used to craft furniture, baskets, and various decorative items. “Wicker furniture and accessories are made from natural materials such as rattan, bamboo, or reed. It brings an organic and earthy vibe to your living space, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere,” says Santa Barbara Interiors.
Creating wicker involves intertwining these flexible materials into intricate patterns, often forming a strong and lightweight structure. Wicker’s history can be traced back to ancient Egypt, and its popularity has endured through the ages due to its durability and aesthetic appeal.
“Wicker and rattan are popular choices for interior design as these materials are lightweight, durable, and add natural texture to the home,” shares Morgan Desquenne of 3DVIA. “Wicker and rattan can be used in various ways, from side chairs to coffee tables to poofs, stools, and even bed frames.”
CASS Design Co. notes, “Our best tip to use wicker in a way that elevates your space versus making it feel dated is to use it sparingly. Think accent pieces like lighting, side tables, side chairs or benches, or even vases. When you add these pieces here and there, it adds an element of warmth and interest. If it’s overdone, like an entire matching set, there isn’t as much visual interest.”
Here are 10 more ways to easily include wicker design in your home.
1. Wicker planters
Wicker planters are stylish and functional containers specifically designed for holding and showcasing plants, flowers, and herbs.
“Bring a touch of nature indoors by using wicker planters to display your favorite houseplants. These planters can be placed on window sills, shelves, or even hung from the ceiling to create an eye-catching display. The combination of green foliage and the earthy tones of wicker creates a soothing and inviting atmosphere in your home,” notes Wicker Guides.
2. Wicker lighting
Wicker lighting fixtures bring nature-inspired aesthetics and warm illumination to any living space. Whether in pendant lights, chandeliers, or table lamps, these fixtures cast beautiful patterns of light and shadows that infuse the room with a cozy and inviting ambiance.
“Wicker lighting is a great way to create ambiance,” notes Cottage Culture. “The natural fibers of the lamp soften and warm the space while the soft cascading pattern of light that falls from a chandelier truly sets a mood. Don’t have space for a chandelier? Try a wicker floor lamp to add interest to your space.”

3. Wicker headboards
Wicker headboards offer rustic charm to bedroom decor, adding texture and warmth to the overall ambiance. Their woven design, typically crafted from materials like rattan or willow, provides a lightweight and airy feel while still serving as a sturdy and supportive backdrop for the bed.
Bree Kotwitz of Wicker Baskt says to, “Give your bedroom a touch of bohemian charm by incorporating a wicker headboard. The natural texture of wicker adds a cozy and inviting feel to the room, especially when paired with soft bedding and neutral tones to create a serene and stylish haven.”
4. Wicker coffee tables
Wicker coffee tables are eye-catching pieces of furniture. “An easy way to add wicker into your home is through a coffee table tray. Add a cute book and plant, and you’ve got a beautiful vignette,” says NB Design Group.
5. Wicker trunks
Wicker trunks come in various sizes, from small decorative pieces to larger storage containers, making them suitable for use in bedrooms, living rooms, or even outdoor spaces.
Kim Turner, Principal and Designer at Kim Turner Design, and Advancement Director at Dwell with Dignity notes, “A wicker trunk placed at the foot of a bed serves as an excellent storage solution for extra bedding. In a guest room, it provides a convenient space to stash additional blankets for those who might feel chilly during the night. It also allows you to include extra pillows with varying firmness levels, offering guests a personalized and comfortable sleeping experience.”
6. Wicker chairs
Wicker chairs are classic seating options that combine comfort, style, and natural elegance. With their lightweight yet durable construction, wicker chairs are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
“Place wicker chairs in your living room, paired with plush cushions to create a cozy reading corner,” recommends Zen Candles Design. “Opt for neutral colors like cream, beige, or pastel hues to create a cohesive look that is both serene and sophisticated.”
7. Wicker panels and wallpaper
Wicker panels and wallpaper are innovative and stylish ways to incorporate the natural appeal of wicker into interior design without the need for actual woven materials.
“Make a striking first impression by covering an accent wall with woven wicker panels or textured wicker wallpaper,” says Lori of Our Repurposed Home. “ Wrap some old books with wicker wallpaper sheets and place them on a shelf and a few plants in wicker baskets. It will give your arrangement some texture and interest. Cover your traditional painted stair risers with wicker panels or wallpaper, adding a unique and unexpected twist to your staircase.”
8. Wicker baskets
Wicker baskets come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and designs. “They are the perfect solution for storing items around the house while presenting an aesthetically pleasing decor element. Store blankets, toys, and more in any room while hiding out of view in decorative wicker baskets,” notes Lauren Tieru of Paige & Rye.
9. Outdoor wicker furniture
Wicker outdoor furniture comes in various forms, including chairs, sofas, dining sets, loungers, and more, catering to different seating and entertainment needs. Its timeless and versatile design allows it to blend seamlessly with various outdoor settings, from garden patios and balconies to poolside areas and porches.
“Wicker is a great option for outdoor furniture,” notes Tara Rydl, Mom Can Do Anything. “I love my outdoor living space with a wicker couch and wicker swivel chairs. As long as I keep it covered during the winter months, it wears well and holds up nicely.”
10. Indoor wicker furniture
Wicker indoor furniture brings a charming and natural touch to interior spaces, infusing them with warmth and texture. Due to its lightweight and versatile nature, wicker furniture can easily move around to suit various arrangements and decor styles. Wicker chairs and sofas are often paired with cushions and upholstery for enhanced comfort and a personalized touch.
“Most think of coastal design or outdoor design when they think of using wicker or rattan, but like wood, wicker can warm up any interior space and add some needed texture so a space doesn’t feel cold,” explains ReAbode. “Don’t be afraid to use wicker or rattan furniture indoors mixed with other contemporary furniture, especially with a cool color scheme of blues and greens – a chair or coffee table can add some much-needed warmth and texture.”

Today I’m excited to feature a dear friend and fellow Seattle-ite, interior designer, Brian Paquette! Brian and I had the pleasure of working on the Sunset Reimagined Home he designed the kitchen! together, but if that wasn’t enough work, Brian was also in the process of designing, not one, but two more entire homes for Sunset Magazine’s Idea Town in Seabrook, Washington.
Brian designed two color-filled beachfront homes with guest cottages that exemplify what Sunset is all about: casual, beautiful interiors and innovative ideas. I am in awe of interior designers like Brian, so I was dying to ask him for some advice. From color application tricks, financial planning tips and his favorite Etsy shops…it’s all right here – along with stunning images of his designs of course!!
Tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind this project. Where did you start in the design process?
I let the natural landscape that surrounded Seabrook be the guiding force here, amplifying the tones a bit to bridge the gap between inside and outside. While walking the massive beaches early in the morning, you can be surrounded by this overwhelmingly comfortable purply fog to the point that you don’t know where the ocean, sand and sky begin or end. All of a sudden, something like the sharp green of the lush landscape or even a piece of colored ship rope pops into view. This stark contrast was how I approached the homes. Being true to nature while also turning it on it’s head, just a tad!
What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome when designing the homes?
Honestly, most of the process for me is intuitive at this point, but trusting my gut and my inspiration can be a little scary, especially when you have the wandering imagination and bold inclinations that I sometimes have. Time was also a big hurdle, we all had to work fast and smart.
The homes are full of color. What is your fail-proof color palette trick?
When using a bold color, use it in more than one way. For example, we can look at the true green you see throughout the project. I used it in everything from upholstery, to tile, trim paint, pillow welting and in accessories. By using variations of the green hue throughout all of those details, it makes the room look more thought out and textured.
Do you have a design mantra or rules you live by that other people could follow and apply in their own home?
Never stop evolving and changing and looking and learning. The process and excitement of discovering something new and the inspiration that could follow is priceless. Take every trip possible, go down the unexpected path that says “no entry”, read everything!
What is your go-to, perhaps insider!, source that is open to the public? A great Etsy shop or maybe a box store that carries your favorite items?
Not so much of a secret, but after getting the first layer of upholstery, rugs and textiles in a room and then piling in the old stuff like antiques, found pieces and art, I like to pepper in accessories from a lot of different box stores, but my fail-proof stop has to be West Elm. They really have it down, from bedding to vases and ceramics! I am also constantly inspired by some of the artists on Etsy like Jeremy Miranda and Michelle Morin.
Running your own business and being an entrepreneur is a challenging thing. What has been the most surprising thing you’ve learned? Any advice you would give your 25 year old self?
Oh gosh, don’t get me started! I will say I have had some of the best mentors a boy could ask for, but when it comes down to it, I’d suggest two things:
1. Get a financial planner now. You could have 5 dollars in your bank account and a steady job and they could still help you.
2. Not only build, but maintain your network of tradespeople, mentors, creatives etc. It isn’t enough to just meet someone at a party and take their card. True and real connection and an interest in humbly learning something new is where dreams become realities!
There are just so many good things about Brian’s designs. I love that he relied on Seattle based designers in the blue dining room and for his custom artwork from Jennifer Ament hello, crazy good gallery wall in a stairwell! taking notes on this one. I love that Brian is making our hometown proud!!
And did you notice the special project on the stairs? Brian blew up and pixelized images he found of clam diggers on the beaches just outside the homes, from the 1920’s. He then decoupaged them onto the stair risers. It’s such a fun DIY that anyone can do in their home!
I want to thank Brian for all of the great advice he shared with us. It’s such a treat to get behind the scenes of the thought process that goes into design! If you are in the Washington area, the homes will be open to the public through October. If you’d like to tour these beauties in person, find more info here!
We hope you enjoyed today’s decor double whammy!!

When it comes to home decor, it takes a certain level of assuredness to commit to color. Whether it is painting your walls green or investing in a bright blue couch, staying safe seems like the only option with neutrals like grays, beiges, and greiges.
But anyone can gain confidence designing their own space by adding low-stakes, vibrant touches in noncommittal ways. Here, five experts offer their best tips to brighten up your living room—each impermanent and cost-effective—sure to leave you inspired. Once you’ve got an idea in mind, head over to homedepot.com/decor to shop top trends and brands, and find your personalized pops of color.
1. Vibrant Rugs
“Look down on the ground. All you need is a new rug and voila, your space is totally transformed,” says Brad Ramsey, principal designer and founder of his own studio in Nashville. “Rugs can provide a room with texture, pattern, or color—and sometimes all three in one. Depending on your style, you can go for modern patterns, saturated solids, soft organic textures, or muted antiques to change the feel of your home.”
2. Contrasting Textures and Elements
“Think of your upholstery like good basics in your wardrobe: You can always layer underneath or on top of those base pieces—and change the feel of a space without a substantial renovation,” says Ramsey.
For example: If you have a leather or velvet couch, opt for an oversized natural jute or sisal rug that takes up the majority of the space. Then, add a brighter and smaller rug over top. “Scale the colorful rug to ground the seating area and then let the natural rug provide more texture,” he adds. “Then you can contrast and accessorize with fun art and metal accents.”
3. Powerful Pillows
All of our experts could agree on this: Never underestimate the power of pillows. “I love to add a color accent to a room with throw pillows. But don’t settle for two of the exact same,” says Ramsey. “Instead opt for a collection of coordinating pillows.”
If you want to revitalize your oatmeal or charcoal sofa, “selecting a fun, colorful print fabric for pillows will bring it back to life,” says Susan Spath, principal designer of Kern & Co in San Diego.
4. Lively Curtains and Blinds
“What will give you the biggest bang for your buck are colorful drapes,” says Mimi Meacham, founder and principal designer of Marian Louise Designs. “Frame your windows with a fun, colorful print, or choose a solid color fabric with a chic trim.” Meacham prefers darker, heavier tones paired with velvet and wool textures, which “add a soft, yet impactful statement to the space.” If you prefer something more open, linen or sheer fabrics can create a light and airy feel.
5. Natural Accents
“A natural way to liven up any room is to incorporate plants,” says Ramsey. “If you get great light, try a fiddle-leaf fig tree in the window. They love to sunbathe and cast gorgeous shadows from their large, waxy leaves.” Colorful planters can also infuse a joyful atmosphere in any space. In an area where sunlight isn’t abundant, try something lower maintenance, like a snake plant, or add dried or faux flowers to empty shelves, bookcases, stairwells, and entryways.
6. Subtle Lamps and Lights
Whether you’re adding decorative lighting over a piece of artwork or a stand-alone lamp for added ambiance, seize the opportunity to shake things up. “A lamp or sconce with a white lampshade is boring,” says Meacham. “Invest in some fun, colorful lampshades” that project their hues around the room.
7. Bold Bookcases
Adding wallpaper to built-in or freestanding bookcases “will add depth, layering and interest to the living room. Plus, it’s much simpler and a more minimal investment than covering your walls,” says Mindy O’Connor of Melinda Kelson O’Connor Architecture & Interiors in Philadelphia.
Alternatively, add a coat of fresh paint to your shelves. “If your living room is mostly neutral, changing the color of your customized built-in or freestanding shelves to a darker tone, such as navy, black, chocolate brown, or forest green creates a striking visual contrast against white walls,” says the principal designer at Miss Alice Designs, Alice Chiu. “Your eye will be drawn to the visual weight of the contrast, which presents a nice focal point.”
8. Refreshed Knickknacks
Ramsey recommends swapping outdated tchotchkes for items that feel more current. “We can get stuck with the same decorative items in our homes for years out of fear that it’s wasteful to discard them. But I say donate those items and look for new ones that speak to you! Would you wear the same shoes for 10 years and expect to still like them? In most cases, no! So don’t treat your decor like it’s too precious,” he says. “As styles and trends change, you can update along with them.”

Kathy Robb always knew she wanted to do interior design, back as far as high school.
While her degree is in accounting, she took classes focused on upholstery and interior design in hopes of one day breaking into the business.
She started by selling at Round Top Texas Antiques, one of the largest flea markets in the world, in her native Texas. Interior designers would come from other countries and set up shop. She also did vetted pop-up shows between Texas and Charleston, South Carolina.
When she moved to Birmingham, she met Tom Findlay of Thomas Andrew Art Gallery, who invited her and her daughter, Penelope Baggett, to open their own shop, The Blended Bungalow, in the front of his store.
Their ideal customer is someone buying their first or second home, Robb said, and they want to help blend new pieces with any family heirloom pieces that are coming into the home. If every piece of furniture is new, it looks staged, she said, but if everything is an heirloom, it looks old.
The pair also want to avoid giving people “sticker shock,” with affordable pieces that don’t break the budget, Robb said.
The store offers furniture, home decor, candles and some women’s clothing as well, Robb said. There are also fun seasonal items and vintage china, she said.
Baggett, who lives in Texas, handles the behind-the-scenes work, social media and more, Robb said, and will fly in to help at times. Baggett opened her own business focused on refinishing furniture nine years ago, before joining her mother at The Blended Bungalow. The store features her “uniquely refinished dining sets” and Robb’s custom-upholstered chairs blended with “new, traditional pieces for a blended home that’s unique to the owner,” Robb said.
“Our mission and our goal is to bring affordable, gorgeous furniture to the public,” she said.
The store is located at 1925 29th Ave. S. and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
For more information, visit the shop online at The Blended Bungalow on Facebook and Instagram and at their website, blendedbungalow.myshopify.com.

- Create custom artwork: Add a personal touch to your walls by creating your own artwork. You don’t need to be an experienced painter to make beautiful pieces. Experiment with abstract painting techniques using budget-friendly acrylic paints on canvases or repurpose old wooden frames by filling them with fabric or scrapbook paper collages.

Digital textile printing offers several advantages over traditional dyeing, starting with its ability to reduce waste and address the water pollution caused by dyeing, which is known as the second leading global water polluter.
Further, the agility & flexibility of digital production and textile printing allow manufacturers to efficiently handle both small boutique orders and large retail orders using the same equipment, making it an attractive option.
With a lower cost per print and the convenience of print-on-demand, fast production is possible, enabling profitability from orders of any quantity with just a single button push.
Digital textile printing provides designers with nearly limitless graphic and color capabilities, surpassing traditional printing technologies. This freedom allows designers to unleash their creativity and produce unique designs.
The benefits extend to the supply chain as well. Meeting production and shipping deadlines become easier with digital printing, thereby preventing overstocking. Designers can constantly produce new collections to keep up with ever-changing fashion trends, while customers can satisfy their desire for customized apparel, décor, and gift items.

Here at the Koke-Long house we’re in the market for some furniture. Our living room is currently semi-furnished with a comfortable but deteriorating Ikea couch and some leftover dining chairs; we’d like a nice armchair or two and some tables.
I’ve mostly gone for Ikea ‘cheap and new’ furniture in the past, but I’ve been disappointed by its (understatement alert!) lack of durability. This time I’d like to try buying used but higher-quality. As I began to look around, though, I realized that I knew very little about what makes for a strong, long-lasting piece of furniture.
Anyone can identify a rip, scratch, or stain, or decide whether they like a certain color, without special knowledge. But judging whether a piece is likely to last two years or twenty — just by looking at it — is harder stuff. Time to research! Here’s an overview of what I learned, with a checklist at the end.
Wood Furniture — Composition
I used to think hardwoods were hard and softwoods were soft. Silly me! Actually, hardwood just means ‘from a deciduous tree’ and softwood means ‘from a coniferous tree’, and some hardwoods (like aspen) are softer than some softwoods. What you want on exposed surfaces is a wood that’s reasonably scratch-resistant. You can test this easily enough by attempting to draw a thin line with your fingernail across the wood; if it makes a visible dent (use a flashlight here if necessary) you know it won’t stand up to much use.
Structurally, any kind of solid wood or sturdy plywood will do the trick. If plywood, look for at least nine layers. Check the wood for knots, even on unexposed pieces; all knots are susceptible to cracks. Some woods, like pine, are ‘knottier’ than others, and therefore less desirable. Avoid particleboard, pressed wood, or fiberboard.
Veneers — a thin piece of premium wood covering a lower-quality piece of wood — are often used even in very high-quality furniture. As long as the base piece is solid wood or plywood, the only drawback to veneer is that it limits the number of times an item can be refinished.
Wood Furniture — Construction
Joint construction is the main determinant of quality furniture. Anything held together with staples or nails is shoddy construction. Ditto if it’s glued and you can see the glue. Dowels (wooden pegs slotted into two opposing holes) are good, as are screws. The best joints are either dovetail (interlocking squarish ‘teeth’ — see photo) or mortise-and-tenon (narrowed end of one piece inserted into a hole in the other). Corners should have a reinforcing block attached at an angle.
Look for thin sheets of wood between drawers in a chest of drawers or desk. While not necessary, these ‘dust panels’ improve structural strength as well as protect drawer contents. Drawers should run smoothly on glides and have stops to prevent accidentally pulling them all the way out. The best drawers have bottoms that are not affixed to the sides but ‘float’ in a groove, allowing for minor expansion and contraction caused by changes in humidity and providing extra strength.
Lift the piece at one corner — it should not twist or squeak. Check that all legs are touching the floor. Press on various corners to see if the piece rocks or wobbles.
Upholstered Furniture — Composition
For a sofa or chair with removable cushions, unzip a seat cover and have a look inside. You should see a block of foam wrapped with dacron, cotton, or (for very high-end cushions) down, preferably with a protective inner cover (usually muslin). Foam-only cushions are both less durable and less comfortable. If you’re buying new furniture, inquire after the density rating of the seat foam: you’re looking for 1.8 pounds or higher.
Removable back cushions may have foam as well but are more often loose fill. In the latter case, multiple internal compartments are preferred as they prevent the fill from settling.
If there’s a tag or label, look for a cleaning code: ‘W’ means water-based cleaners, ‘S’ means solvent-based cleaners (‘dry cleaning’), ‘X’ means no liquid (vacuum only).
Upholstered Furniture — Construction
According to Consumer Reports, the oft-touted “eight-way hand-tied coil springs” don’t have a corner on comfort; coil, cone, sinuous, and grid springs can all work well. Best just to test the feel of the specific piece by sitting in various spots to see whether you tip or sink. If the cushions are removable, lift and press down on the deck underneath: you should feel even spacing and resistance to pressure.
Squeeze the arms and back: ideally you should not be able to feel the frame through the padding. Lined skirts and ones with weights will hold their shape better over the long run.
Are the cushions reversible? You’ll get twice the wear if they are. Flip them around and make sure any upholstery patterns match up both ways.
Tip: Consumer Reports has a nice diagram to help you assess upholstered furniture construction.
Quick Furniture Checklist
That’s a lot of information. If you’re like me, you might find it difficult to remember all of these factors while you’re actually shopping at the furniture store. To make things easier, I’ve created a basic furniture shopping checklist. You may download the 35kb PDF or simply print the list below:
Wood
- good: solid wood or 9+ layer plywood
- bad: thin plywood, particleboard, pressboard, fiberboard
- bad: knots, cracks
- bad: soft, easily scratched surfaces
Joints
- great: dovetail, mortise & tenon
- good: reinforcing corner blocks
- good: dowels, screws
- bad: staples, nails, visible glue
Drawers
- great: dust panels, floating bottoms
- good: metal glide rails, stops
- bad: wood-on-wood sliding
Frame
- good: even, level with floor
- bad: twists, creaks, wobbles
Springs
- great: hand-tied coil springs
- good: close together, even resistance
- bad: any springs more than a few inches apart
Cushions
- good: firm foam wrapped in padding
- good: protective inner cover
- good: reversible cushions
- bad: bare foam
- bad: loose fill without internal sectioning
Upholstery
- good: aligned patterns
- good: skirts with lining or weights
- bad: skimpy padding along arms and back
Armed with this information, I feel much more confident about approaching future furniture purchases, both new and used. I hope you find it helpful too. Happy hunting!
