The Halloween spirit began to possess Goodwill Southern California back in August.
In Lincoln Heights, a creepy doll with blood-red tears and a stuffed animal in a Grim Reaper cloak posed amongst the seasonal tchotchkes. At the regional flagship store in Glassell Park, a witch and a flapper were amongst the mannequins dressed in their Halloween party finest to welcome shoppers.
“Halloween is like Christmas for us,” says Marla Eby, director of marketing and media relations for Goodwill Southern California, which covers Los Angeles County north of Rosecrans, as well as Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

While seasonal items might pop up at one of the 80+ stores in Goodwill Southern California’s territory throughout the year, staffers often save Halloween donations for the two months leading up to the holiday. It’s a popular spot for costume shopping; in fact, that’s the focus of Goodwill Southern California’s September and October lookbooks. But like most thrift, vintage and antique shops, it’s also a great place to source decorations. As we toured the Glassell Park facility, I spotted a small chandelier, a smattering of goblets and an ornate mirror amongst the Halloween merchandise.
There are a lot of benefits to shopping secondhand for Halloween decorations. Choosing a pre-owned item over something new is an environmentally friendly option since you’re extending the lifespan of a good and potentially saving it from a landfill. Depending on when, where and how you shop, it can be easier on your wallet, too. But perhaps the most attractive benefit of shopping secondhand is the knowledge that you’ll find something far more interesting than the seasonal products at big box stores.
“They’re a statement piece,” says Chuck Garcera, who co-owns King Richard’s Antique Center in Whittier. “It’s exciting because it’s broken-in. It’s got some character.”
At King Richard’s, where more than 140 dealers occupy 302 spaces in the four-story complex, the Halloween season starts around mid-September. However, some vendors, like Creep & Kitsch, located downstairs from the main floor, offer spooky items all year. On a trip to King Richard’s in August, I came across potential Halloween decorations throughout the market, including a Wigglin’ Hand, a painting of a skull surrounded by candles and even a prop electric chair.
But shopping secondhand for Halloween can be tricky. If this is your favorite holiday, you might be on the lookout for themed goods all year. If not, know that you should start your shopping early. “Now is the time to shop because I promise, the closer it gets to Halloween, the more treasure hunting you have to do,” says Eby.
If you’re working with a small budget, Goodwill Southern California has a plenty of affordable options, including monthly coupons for those who sign up to their email list and discounts for military, seniors and students. They also have color tag sales. When you’re shopping, you’ll probably notice that the tags are coded in various colors. Each week, one of those colors is half-off. On Thursdays, a designated color tag will be sold for $1.99. “It’s a really great way to save,” says Eby.
This is also a good option for those who like to reimagine secondhand items for Halloween. Eby points to a recent social media trend where people paint spooky images on existing artwork. You can find base pieces for these projects amongst the home decor at Goodwill.
For those with a larger budget or who want items that can hang around the house long after October 31, vintage and antique shops might be the best option. Your choices here aren’t just the ones that scream Halloween. Vintage horror movie posters and memorabilia, memento mori and home items with a Victorian look are just a few things that can take you through the spooky season and beyond.
Wherever you shop, look beyond the designated Halloween displays. Pick up horror movies on VHS, DVD or Blu-Ray to play in the background at parties. Seek worn books, particularly ones with creepy cover illustrations, that can be used as coffee table decorations. Thrift clothes and accessories to outfit any prop witches and creatures you might be building. Look for old dolls and toys to reappropriate as Halloween decorations. Sift through photographs, film slides and postcards, which can be used in a variety of different projects.
Whether you are thrifting or antiquing, you should use the same plan. Note the best shopping options in your area, including both brick-and-mortar stores and events like flea markets. Make time to shop and break up the excursions over a period of weeks if that’s easiest on your schedule.
Be sure to shop with an open mind. You never know what you’ll find inside a thrift store or an antique shop. The most important advice, though, is to be prepared to buy what you love when you see it.
Says Garcera, “It’s like we tell customers, if you see something at an antique store, you better buy it now. It might not be there tomorrow.”
Which continuity error or plot hole in a movie always sticks out in your mind? After someone polled the internet, here are twenty-five top-voted films that stuck out.
1. The Butterfly Effect (2004)
“In The Butterfly Effect, it’s repeatedly shown that when Ashton Kutcher goes back in time and changes something, he is the only one who is aware of the changes, as he is then propelled back to the new future he created from that aberration.”
“So, for example, when he blows off his arms, he wakes up in the future and is shocked to be limbless, but all his roommates are like, ‘duh dude, of course, you have no arms.’ However, Kutcher is in prison at one point and attempts to make another prisoner believe his powers.”
The Butterfly Effect Prison Error
“So he travels back in time, stabs his hands, and returns to prison. Despite minor changes having the potential to create new timelines, he’s right back in prison, and the prisoner recognizes the new scars, which goes against all the logic the movie showed.”
2. Mean Girls (2004)
“In Mean Girls, when Cady comes home from the Halloween party, and Janis and Damian are watching a movie, and they get scared by her costume, the popcorn in the bowl goes flying everywhere, then the camera cuts back to them, and the popcorn bowl is full again,” another shared.
3. Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
A Harry Potter fan asked, “Why don’t Fred and George Weasley see Peter Pettigrew on Ron’s shoulder on the Maurader’s Map while they’re at Hogwarts before his third year?” “If we’re gonna start in on Harry Potter, we’re gonna be here awhile,” joked another.
4. Remember The Titans (2000)
“In Remember the Titans, there’s a montage scene of football highlights where a Titan’s Corner Back intercepts the ball and continues running in the same direction as the receiver was,” someone pointed out.
5. Wonder Woman (2017)
All Ares had to do in Wonder Woman to win was nothing. His goal was to enlist Diana to his side by showing that humans are inherently evil and beyond redemption. But, of course, she would’ve come to that conclusion if he didn’t show up saying, “I influenced them.”
“Furthermore, Wonder Woman can kill him. But he can teleport and shapeshift, so the only way for her to ever reach him would be for him to present himself, which he does, and then gets destroyed.”
“It’s stupid. The villain could’ve won by staying home, eating a bowl of cereal, and walking outside. And this villain is the literal god of war but has no sense of any tactic ever.”
6. A Quiet Place (2018)
Someone asked, “If the creatures in A Quiet Place are blind and hunt via hearing, then why is their hearing threshold only slightly better than a human’s whenever someone is two feet away from them? Can they not hear heartbeats? Breathing? Fear-induced bowel movements?”
7. Ant-Man (2015)
“Ant-Man,” one replied. “Do the things that shrink keep their density or not? Paul Rudd is shrunk down and still packs the punching power of a grown man in tiny size, but a tank can be shrunk down and carried on a key chain?”
8. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
“My standout Star Wars continuity error is when young Anakin activates C-3PO while he’s still a build-in-progress. Anakin goes to plug in the C-3PO eye, picking up the eye part with one hand and installing the eye using his opposite hand in the next cut,” one Star Wars fan declared.
9. Batman Returns (1992)
“Batman Returns. Bruce rips his mask off, and his eye makeup is gone,” someone noted. “I like that Matt Reeves fixed this in the new The Batman,” another volunteered.
10. Superman Returns (2006)
“The entire conflict of Superman Returns,” shared one. “Lex Luthor brilliantly creates an entire island made of kryptonite. Superman can’t stop him there! But five rent-a-cops in a dingy could,” shared one disgruntled fan.
11. Monsters University (2013)
“Monsters Inc. Mike: You have always been jealous of me since the fourth grade. Next movie, they meet while in college,” said one. Another agreed, “It has always bothered me!”
12. Gremlins (1984)
“I just watched the original Gremlins,” confessed one. “They realize they can’t get wet but are all running around in the snow the entire movie—also, the bar scene where they’re all drinking beer, and it gets splashed around a lot.”
“It’s not meant to be a serious movie. But the whole first 30 minutes is setting the rules. Then, like 3/4 of the film, they make no difference after Stripe falls into the pool and multiplies like crazy.”
13. The Dark Knight (2008)
“I want to make it clear I LOVE the movie, and this doesn’t affect my enjoyment of it at all besides a ‘well huh’ every time I watch it. However, the dinner party scene in The Dark Knight, just ending after Bruce catches Rachel, has always stuck out to me,” shared one.
“There’s no explanation or follow-up, the scene ends, and the Joker somehow gets out of the Wayne building, and Bruce doesn’t try to catch him despite being on the ground while they’re all upstairs.”
14. The Karate Kid
“The Karate Kid wins the match with a kick to the face when kicks to the face get you disqualified,” stated one. A few people argued about the rule not being relevant to the third Karate Kid film before one said, “Daniel is the true bully. Watch Cobra Kai.”
15. King Kong (1976)
“An old one: Why did the natives build a big door for King Kong to get through? And why couldn’t he climb over the wall anyway? He climbed the f***kin’ Empire State Building!” one user exclaimed.
16. Beauty and The Beast (1991)
“Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. In the opening sequence, the Beast rips his portrait to shreds with his claws from the upper left corner to the bottom right. Later in the movie, when Belle discovers the picture, it’s torn from the bottom left to the upper right corner,” another reported.
17. Back to The Future (1985)
One user noted, “Back to the Future is a great movie, but in the final scene, Doc comes back and says quick Marty, you need to go with me now into the future. It’s your kids. Why does he have to hurry? It’s a Time Machine!”
18. The Goonies (1985)
In The Goonies, when the Fratellis are kidnapping Chunk, the driver starts singing, and you can still hear him in the next shot. But his reflection in the side mirror is just still. First continuity error I noticed as a kid, and it sticks with me,” one answered.
19. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
“In the climactic fight scene towards the end of The Dark Knight Rises, after Batman has freed the Gotham Police force from the sewers and they go to confront Bane’s thugs.”
“Despite both opposing groups being armed, and there is at least some exchange of gunfire at the beginning, both sides quickly seem to forget that they possess firearms and instead engage in a ma-ive hand-to-hand brawl,” one user confirmed.
20. Double Jeopardy (1999)
“The entire premise of the Ashley Judd movie Double Jeopardy has always bothered me,” shared one. “It says that if you’re wrongly convicted of killing someone who faked his death, you can kill them for real after you get paroled and not face any legal consequences.
“It’s one big hole for a plot. The person who told her that was a former lawyer, and her parole officer (another former lawyer and law professor) didn’t correct her and even helped her hunt down her ex-husband.”
Double Jeopardy Cellmates
“Any lawyer would know it was BS, and I would have thought that even a regular person would instinctively know that there’s no legal loophole that will let you hunt someone down and kill them in cold blood.”
21. Jura-ic Park (1993)
“The elevation change in the T-Rex paddock in Jura-ic Park. No matter what the defenders say, that gap in the electric fence was not wide enough to warrant two ma-ively different elevations. The 100ft drop was ridiculous,” one suggested.
22. Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
A Marvel fan asked, “If Thor could share his powers like in Thor: Love of and Thunder with others, then why didn’t he do that in Avengers: Endgame?’ Another answered, “He can’t. But Zeus’ lightning bolt let him do that.” However, many argued that it wasn’t explained in the film.
23. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
“Top Gun: Maverick,” one stated. “There is no way anyone survives a crash at Mach 10. But I still love the movie.” Another argued, “Top Gun: Maverick is Star Wars with fighter jets.” Finally, a third added, “Star Wars is Dambusters with spaceships and no awkwardly named dogs.”
24. How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” one asked. “Why didn’t she make the article up once she started falling in love with Matthew McCaughey? I know there’s journalistic integrity and stuff, but she didn’t have to keep torturing the guy. When she was at his parent’s, playing cards with his whole family was an excellent time to pull back on it.”
25. Forrest Gump (1994)
Finally, someone noted, “Forrest Gump. When Forrest realized that little Forrest was his son was one of the most emotional moments in the film, AND THAT IRON IN THE BACK KEEPS SWITCHING POSITIONS!!! I can’t ever unsee it now. And you won’t either. You’re welcome.”

Target’s fall home decor is here, and no surprise, I want everything. The pumpkins, candles and extra cozy throws hit the retailer a couple of weeks ago, but now that Labor Day has come and gone, we can finally turn our full attention to all things fall.
For me, Target’s candles — specifically the Heritage Pumpkin scent — are a seasonal favorite. However, you may be excited to hear that Joanna Gaines’ Hearth & Hand with Magnolia brand has a few new launches for the season, and so does Shea McGee of Studio McGee with Threshold.
You can go to your local Target to see the fall decor on display, or you can shop the wider selection online. But I should warn you — shopping online is a lot like shopping in store. You may go online thinking you know what you want, but you’ll probably end up buying a lot more. And with so much good stuff, I don’t blame you.
Prepare your bank account and take a look below at a few sure-to-be top sellers from the new fall collection to get you started.
1. Stanley 40oz Stainless Steel H2.0 Flowstate Quencher Tumbler – Hearth & Hand™ with Magnolia, $45
Full disclosure: This isn’t new this month. But this summer, Hearth & Hand with Magnolia collaborated with Stanley on a few new fall-appropriate colors for its iconic tumbler. The newer colors include brown, navy, dark green, taupe, white and a light green.
2. Teddy Boucle Throw Blanket – Threshold, $49
Teddy or sherpa fabrics aren’t going anywhere this year. Snag this extra cozy teddy blanket in three colors to drape over your bed or curl up with on the sofa.
This is a pumpkin-scented candle in an actual pumpkin — too cute. It even takes things to the next level with a wooden wick, which crackles like a fireplace.
4. Large Champagne Glass Pumpkin – Threshold, $25
You can never have enough pumpkin decor. Grab this pretty glass pumpkin for Halloween and Thanksgiving festivities. It’s not too spooky or Halloween-specific, so you really can keep it out all season long.
5. Fall Floral Branch – Threshold, $15
Build your own gorgeous fall floral display with these single branches. You can pair a few of them together or pair them with other faux florals for the season in your favorite vase.

Howdy, friends! This summer, there will be another chautauqua on financial independence in Ecuador. You should consider attending. These Ecuador chautauquas — which are unrelated to the European chautauquas — are always a fun, educational, and bonding experience.
Clarification: At some point, chautauqua founders Cheryl Reed and JL Collins parted ways. Now JL runs the European chautauquas — which are on hiatus — with Katie and Alan Donegan. Cheryl continues to run the unrelated Ecuador gatherings. Both events are excellent.
I often speak about the intersection of money and meaning when I attend.
How can you find purpose in your life — with or without money? How much money is enough? What should you do after you’ve achieved financial independence? These are the sorts of questions I’ve explored at past chautauqua events. I expect these are the same questions being explored in July.
Speakers this year include:
Tanja Hester from Our Next Life. Tanja is an outspoken voice in the personal-finance community, working hard to challenge assumptions and to promote financial freedom for all. She’s the author of the excellent Work Optional and the award-winning Wallet Activism. (Tanja is also a fellow office-supply nerd. Seriously, our chat history is filled with geeky discussions of favorite pens and notebooks.)
Piggy and Kitty (a.k.a. Jess and Lauren) from Bitches Get Riches. Long-time readers know that BGR is one of my favorite money blogs. I admire how Jess and Lauren blend biting humor with deep dives into personal-finance topics. Not an easy task. And the Bitches are just as funny in person as they are on the web. (I turn to Piggy and Kitty when I need help with modern pop culture. “What does S-tier mean?” “How do I make a Taylor Swift animated GIF?”)
Jessica and Corey from The Fioneers. While I’ve met Jessica and Corey, I’ve never really had a chance to get to know them. I’m eager to change that in Ecuador. I find their writing considered and thoughtful. I’m particularly fond of their concept of Slow FI, the notion that you can use “the incremental financial freedom [you] gain along the journey to financial independence to live happier and healthier lives, do better work, and build strong relationships”. This meshes well with my own vision of the stages of financial freedom. (Last Halloween, Jessica and Corey published an interview with me: Money doesn’t magically fix our problems.)
And, of course, we’ll enjoy a presentation from our host, Cheryl Reed. Cheryl founded these money chautauquas with JL Collins in 2013 and she’s hosted ten of them in the past. She likes to discuss happiness and joy and how to develop it in your life.
If you’re interested in attending this chautauqua, you can find more information at the official website. Note that there are two gatherings in Ecuador this year. If it doesn’t work to join this one, perhaps you can attend the second event.
Each chautauqua is different, of course, but the four previous retreats I’ve attended all had similarities:
Attendees gather at a resort for a week of conversation and camaraderie. These are smallish facilities that allow us to spend time together with few other guests. We eat and drink together. We walk together. We play games together. We talk about money together. We have fun!
Each day, one (or more) of the presenters gives a talk about a subject dear to her heart. (I talk about money and meaning, for instance.) These are l-o-n-g presentations but they’re fun, interactive, and informative.
Each attendee meets one-on-one with a presenter. What you do with that time is up to you. I’ve had people bring detailed spreadsheets and questions about retirement. I’ve had people chat with me about travel. I’ve had people ask for relationship advice (no joke!). Generally speaking, it’s a chance for you to pick a person’s brain about some sort of topic related to their area of expertise.
There are various (optional) off-site trips to visit the local area. In Portugal, we visited a winery. In Ecuador, we’ve visited thriving markets, chocolate factories, and butterfly preserves.
From what I’ve seen, however, the real value is in the friendships formed during these weeks. Much of our time is spent sitting together discussing life, the universe, and everything.
I’m still in contact with folks from each of the chautauquas I’ve attended in the past. Some of these folks have become close friends with whom I have frequent contact. (Our 2016 crew — the Werewolf Hunters — even rented a house in Utah for an in-person reunion. We visit each other whenever we’re in each other’s cities and have a semi-active group chat.)
I can’t promise that you’ll form life-long friends during this week, but from what I’ve seen, the odds are good. And no wonder. You’re gathering with a group of like-minded people to talk about some deep, personal subjects. Bonding is bound to occur.
Here are a few favorite photos from past chautauquas…
These chautauquas aren’t for everyone, and I know that. But they’re perfect events for a certain class of people. If you think that you are one of those people, hop on over to the website to take a look at the details. Maybe I’ll see you in Ecuador this summer!
One more quick note: I recently joined my pal Grant Sabatier on the Earn & Invest podcast for a discussion about money burnout. These conversations with Grant and Doc G are always entertaining and enlightening.

Death may be a natural part of life, but it still catches us off guard. Even when we hear about the passing of our favorite celebrities we’re left with disbelief and heartache. This post will take you on an emotional rollercoaster as we look back at 13 celebrities who died way too soon and sent shockwaves through their fans all over the world.
1. Alan Rickman
“Alan Rickman,” one Redditor commented.
Another user shared, “I heard once that he was the only one who knew Snape’s ending because Rowling told him so that he could play the character more accurately. And the director used to get angry, but Rickman knew he was doing it right. I don’t think it’s true, but I like to think so.”
One user added, “I think it was that he asked her ‘What’s something important about Snape that no one else knows?’ Whe told him he was in love with Harry’s mom. Apparently, this heavily influenced his performance from the start.”
2. Anton Yelchin
One user posted, “Anton Yelchin. He was so young and had such a bright future, and for him to die in such a senseless way was heartbreaking. I still think about it.”
Another commenter replied, “All because of a faulty car.”
3. Grant Imahara
“Grant Imahara,” one user shared.
One user replied, “The Grant Imahara award they give out on BattleBots is a great tribute to him.”
Another user commented, “This is going to sound stupid, but he had an open Facebook account, and I added him; it turns out we shared a birthday; he even posted on my wall one time for it.”
One commenter responded, “It doesn’t sound stupid. It sounds awesome.”
4. Chris Cornell
One user added, “Chris Cornell.”
A second replied, “Black Hole Sun, ‘no one sings like you anymore,’ hits differently now.”
Another user shared, “This one hurt the most. I grew up with his voice, and the worst part was the reminder that you can never outrun your demons, and they can still show up at any age. His voice could always break my heart, but now more than ever.”
5. Norm Macdonald
“Norm Macdonald. Came out of nowhere, such a unique comedian,” one user shared.
Another commenter replied, “I didn’t even know he was sick.”
One Redditor added, “At least he went out killing the cancer too. I call that a draw.”
Another user responded, “One of the funniest norm bits, IMO. Especially after knowing he had cancer when he wrote it.”
6. Phil Hartman
“Phil Hartman,” commented one user.
Another user shared, “Yeah man… saw Andy Dick on tv last night, f- that guy.”
“Remember hearing about Jon Lovitz laying the smackdown on Andy? Yeah, I’d like to see the video,” one user replied.
7. Steve Irwin
One user commented, “My favorite thing was I was mad at the stingray taking him out. Saw another dude who posted a fist at an aquarium saying he should beat up sting rays to let them know Steve Irwin still got shooters out here. Then he posted another picture with his hand to the same sting rays and said, ‘That’s not what Steve Irwin taught me.’”
Another Redditor replied, “I remember seeing a post somewhere some time ago saying that Steve is probably in Heaven now patting that stingray and apologizing to it for startling it and saying ‘No hard feelings mate’ and that made me cry again. It’s definitely him.”
8. Carrie Fisher
“Carrie Fisher followed by her mom, Debbie Reynolds, the next day,” one user exclaimed.
Another user responded, “Man, that was a terrible year. Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen….”
One commenter added, “The way that year started with David Bowie, then a week later Alan Rickman really set us up for depression. George Michael going on Christmas Day, and Carrie Fisher to end the year was brutal.”
9. Cameron Boyce
One user posted, “Cameron Boyce—grew up with Jessie playing now and then. Awful to lose someone so young.”
Another user replied, “This was my answer too. I’m older, but I watched Jesse with my kids, and we LOVED the Descendants movies!! He was so young and multi-talented. He had a great career ahead of him, and I feel for his family.”
10. Heath Ledger
“Heath Ledger,” one user said.
Another user replied, “The career this man was about to have.”
One Redditor commented, “Same. I had always appreciated him as a teen and then loved the leading man he was turning into heading into my twenties. His death was so surprising and sad.”
11. Anthony Bourdain
One user mentioned, “Anthony Bourdain.”
Another user shared, “That was a gut punch. Even worse that it was suicide.”
One commenter replied, “I don’t usually hold celebrities—people I don’t know—in admiration, but I absolutely did with Anthony Bourdain. He seems like he tricked the world into letting him live his best life while paying him handsomely for it. And in doing so, he injected some much-needed humanitarian perspective into often-forgotten parts of the world.
“‘Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts; it even breaks your heart. But that’s OK. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.’
That his death was a suicide—and knowing that he, like me—suffered with anxiety and depression, made this one a blow that really, really hurt.”
One Redditor added, “It’s interesting that everyone was jealous of the lifestyle he seemed to have on his shows. Traveling to incredible destinations and learning about new cultures is something a ton of people were envious of. But he did one interview where he talked about how grueling the schedule was for him. I remember when he talked about the fact that he was rarely home long enough for him to do a whole load of laundry. That always stuck with me,” one user commented.
One Redditor commented, “That was the reason why his second wife, Ottavia, divorced him. During an interview, she said she still loved him and would always love him, but being without a partner for 8 months out of the year wasn’t the life she wanted anymore.”
12. Chris Benoit
One Redditor posted, “[Chris] Benoit. I was a huge fan of his for a very long time and followed his whole career. I had no idea he could do something like that; it was horrifying.”
One user commented, “I remember watching the WWE tribute to him before the circumstances were revealed. They were doing a storyline in which Vince ‘died’ then to see him the following week with everyone one stage was odd. The news was crazy. Even more so later.”
13. Chadwick Boseman
One user answered, “Chadwick Boseman. No one really had any idea of his struggle with cancer and only knew him as a beefed-up Black Panther. Dude was a Marvel Superhero, for crying out loud, then one day… gone.”
Another user agreed, “Same here. It was a shock for sure.”
One Redditor added, “That death really hit me hard. It still does to this day—one of the few deaths that made me break down crying. He wasn’t only a comic book hero. He was a hero for so many black children (even adults like myself) because seeing ourselves represented in such a positive and impactful way invoked so much pride. Because I had most of what I needed, I went as Killmonger for Halloween after that movie came out!
“That movie hit differently for the black community, so his death was devastating. To know he was battling that cancer while he was filming Black Panther, while also visiting children with terminal cancer, just… Ugh… We lost a good one. RIP.”
One user shared, “That one hit my son hard. We’re actually white, but Black Panther was his absolute favorite superhero and still is. And that was such a significant relief to me. As a parent, particularly in a rural area, I’m always concerned that he may pick up bad ideas from kids at school or wherever. While I don’t think it should be necessary, Black Panther was a great representative of positivity for the black community, and for my white son to have a black superhero as his favorite gave me quite a bit of relief that he’s not picking up racist ideas from his peers.
“When I told my son what happened, he teared up. He didn’t cry, but he’s still bummed to this day about him dying.”

1. Jimi Hendrix at Winterland Auditorium
One user posted, “Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall, and Albert King at the Winterland Auditorium in SF on February 2, 1968, on my first date with my husband.”
Another added, “Outstanding… You win. I am so jealous you saw Jimi in person.”
One user also replied, “The ticket alone is practically an engagement ring in sentimental value. I mean, how could anyone resist an opportunity to fall head over heels when Jimi Hendrix is playing the soundtrack to your beginning, live? The man played his cards very wisely. Please give him props from a random internet millennial who’s obsessed with the era!”
2. GWAR, 2004
One Redditor posted, “GWAR. Halloween. 2004. They fought a dinosaur after decapitating both GW and John Kerry… A vulgar live-action bug bunny cartoon.”
Another user said, “Gwar is one of those bands I always tell people they need to see live once, even if they’re not fans. It’s a wild experience,” a user commented. Another replied, “Coolest show ever!! I’ve seen them 15+ times, and I have a blast every time! What the people want could only be the senseless slaughter of the gutter slime that litters this nation for cash and prizes.”
One user shared, “My first Gwar show was with Misfits, Mephiskapheles, and Earth Crisis, the late 90s. Maybe not the greatest concert music-wise, but hands down one of the most entertaining. Totally agreed that everyone should see them once, I brought a bunch of friends that might listen to Green Day on an especially rebellious day, and they all had a blast. But, they’re really not the same since Oderus died, unfortunately.”
3. Queen with Thin Lizzy Opening, 1978
One user shared, “Queen with Thin Lizzy Opening, 1978”
Another user replied, “Saw that show in Houston. Fantastic.”
A third user added, “I hate you now because I’m overcome with jealousy.”
Another commenter said, “I saw that show in San Diego. Definitely the best of the best!”
4. Nirvana, 1992
Nirvana played their first (and only) show in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 30, 1992. The performance at Estadio José Amalfitani became infamous for several reasons: it followed on the heels of Nevermind and was one of the band’s largest shows to date.
One Redditor posted, “Nirvana 1992.”
“Oh man, I am so jealous. What do you remember about it?” exclaimed another user.
One user added, “It was just a long, powerful raw show. No elaborate set or tour package (e.g., see Motley Crew or Rolling Stones), and the stage was pretty bare, but the band was all energetic and loud. Kurt captivated the crowd with his emotion and angst. In one of my first big arena concerts, the mosh pit was never-ending and sped up and slowed down to Cobain’s guitar all night. The energy was electric. I’ve seen a ton of shows since, but I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”
“This is the right answer,” another commenter replied.
“I feel like I need to stop reading the answers to this question because I’m just full of endless jealousy. This must’ve been incredible,” One Redditor complained.
5. The Pink Floyd Division Bell Tour, 1994
One Reddit user shared, “The Pink Floyd Division Bell Tour in 1994.”
Another responded, “Saw it in Raleigh. Magical.”
A third commenter replied, “Oh d***, you win! This might be a controversial opinion, but Division Bell is my favorite Pink Floyd album, and I’m glad Roger Waters left when he did.”
6. Nine Inch Nails, Los Angeles
Nine Inch Nails, abbreviated NIN and stylized as NI, is a Cleveland-based American industrial rock band formed in 1988. Trent Reznor, the band’s singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, was the only constant member until his frequent collaborator, Atticus Ross, joined in 2016.
One Redditor posted, “My #1 fav was NIN during Wave Goodbye in 2009 at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. It took me years to wrap my head around the awesomeness. My number 2 fav shows are Guns n Roses from Jan 1992—they were insanely good. Soundgarden was the opener.”
Another user replied, “I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl in 2014 when they played with Soundgarden. I’m a big Soundgarden fan and have always appreciated NIN, but I was there to see Soundgarden. NIN blew my mind and immediately became the number 1 concert for me.”
Another commenter replied, “Seeing them a few times (my fav band) and watching them play Hurt with the giant projector screen like in the music video is always an entrancing experience.”
7. U2, at Sullivan Stadium
A commenter shared his experience, “Before U2 were hated, I stood at the old Sullivan stadium, age 17, Bono with his arm in a sling after falling off the stage in DC. When you’re 17, everything matters more. The show was solid. Edge made a Hendrix impression on Bullet the Blue Sky. The final song was a chorus repeating ’40,’ which the crowd sang over and over again as we exited the venue. Maybe later they did dumb stuff, but that night, U2 gave us a good time.”
Another user agreed, “U2 Joshua Tree tour for me. I’m not a huge U2 fan, but the energy is. They held 50,000 people’s emotions in the palm of their hands.”
8. AC/DC Hockenheim, 2015
A user shared, “AC/DC Hockenheim 2015 first concert ever, and my dad really wanted me to see them. Had a blast because of all the cool shit they came up with. Brought up a bit f- bell and rang it all the time during Hells Bells.
They even sold small blinking horn headbands at the entry point for like 5€ or something. So you could see about 20,000 blinking headbands once it turned dark.
And Angus Young played a solo that felt like it took 20 minutes.
One of the best days I ever had with my father.”
9. Lake Street Dive
One user shared, “Lake Street Dive. Oh, my goodness. They were opening for the Avett Brothers, and I had heard one of their songs before, but I’d never heard of the band or listened to them other than one song in a passive way. Oh, my goodness. They blew me away. I’d seen LOTS of live shows before, but none made me feel the way they did: their close harmonies, their groove. I fell in love with them. Their live sound is better than their album sound. But their album stuff is excellent too. They became my favorite band overnight.”
Another replied, “I saw that lineup. I became a fan, but LOVED the Avett Brothers.”
A third user responded, “The Avett Brothers were good too, but I was just going because my mom is a HUGE fan of them.”
10. Rammstein, Oslo, Norway
One user posted, “RAMMSTEIN.”
Another replied, “Rammstein in Oslo this summer. Standing in a packed crowd for over four hours before the warm-up act started! What a pyro fantastic show.”
One Redditor added, “Rammstein has it all. Fire. Lasers. Fun props. Confetti.”
A fourth commented, “Rammstein 2010. Also, most recently, Birdland’s Big Band, New Year’s Eve, directed by the great David de Jesús.”

These 10 Terrible Movies Are Still People’s Favorites
After opening this spring at 7463 Girard Ave. (behind D.G. Wills bookstore), nationwide creative studio Board & Brush is making a home in La Jolla.
The local studio, run by La Jolla residents Doug Vocelle and Sam Grissom, offers instructor-led art projects — mostly on wooden boards — in the form of home decorations, serving trays, signs and more.
To learn more, the La Jolla Light posed the following questions to Vocelle:
Q. When did your business start? Who founded it? What is its mission?
A. Board & Brush was founded by Julie Selby and started as a neighborhood holiday party making wood signs in her basement in December 2014. It quickly turned into a successful business model, opening the first studio in March 2015 in Hartland, Wis. Flash forward to today and there are over 250 studios in 43 states as well as Canada and Japan.
Q. What services do you offer?
A. We offer instructor-led [do-it-yourself] workshops working mainly with wood to create inspirational signs, trays, boxes, planters, trivets, coat racks and so much more. There are over 800 different projects to choose from. We also offer specialty workshops for doormats and totes. Our corporate creative team is constantly adding new and exciting options for functional and decorative home decor.
Board & Brush is an experience. We specialize in birthday parties, girls’ or moms’ nights out, date night, team-building and invite you to grab a friend and join us for a workshop.
Q. What makes you and/or your company unique compared with similar businesses?
A. While we may be similar to those paint-and-sip studios people may be aware of, we’re different in a significant way. Sure, we have great music and videos on big-screen TVs, adult beverages and snacks, but our customers leave our studio with a project that won’t end up squirreled away in a corner of a shelf. When you leave Board & Brush, you’ll leave with a beautiful piece of home decor that you will use and be proud to tell your friends and family, “I made that!”
Q. What’s new recently with the business that you want everyone to know about?
A. We’re excited to offer our first doormat workshop in August and our first Time Crunch Workshop, which is a great first-time option with smaller projects and a shorter workshop time. It won’t be long until we’re busy with Halloween- and fall-themed workshops, which are also a huge hit.
Q. What are the advantages of working in La Jolla?
A. We live right here in The Village and wanted our studio to be here, too! We’ve had wonderful customers from all over greater San Diego, some not familiar with La Jolla. They are thrilled that we have five parking spaces dedicated to our studio right in front. We love giving tips for places for our customers to go eat after a workshop, what to see and where to shop, which happens frequently.
Our website, boardandbrush.com/lajolla, is the place to browse our calendar and book your workshop. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram @boardandbrushlajollaca for our latest updates, flash sales and giveaways.

When you really get down to it, Halloween is about two things: costumes and candy. While some trick or treaters aim to get praise for their creative costumes, most Halloween goals revolve around candy.
Often times, kids will measure the success of their Halloween haul by how many pounds of candy they collected, but as my seventh grade social studies teacher often preached, “Quality is better than quantity.”
After all, no one wants 10lbs of peanuts, pretzels, and candy corn. So to make sure you get the tastiest of treats this Halloween, here are four tips to help you find the best candy houses.
1. They have great decorations
If a household is willing to transform their front yard into an eerily perfect haunted graveyard, there’s a good chance that they’re going to put in the extra effort with their candy.
I’m not saying that there’s always a direct relationship between the amount of decorations and the quality of the candy, but it’s true enough to warrant an investigation of any house with more than just a few jack o lanterns.
2. Lots of kids are going there
I understand that you don’t know what you’re going to get until you walk up to the door, but if a house is flooded with trick or treaters, I’d be willing to bet that they aren’t serving up fun size granola bars.
The key here is to hone in on the details; use all of your senses to try and get a read on the crowd. Are they excitedly skipping down from the front steps? Do you hear high pitched giggles? Smiling faces are the surest sign, but with masks, makeup, and the dark of night, you can’t always count on visual clues.
3. Talk to other trick or treaters
It might seem a little odd to engage in a conversation with a masked stranger, but talking to other trick or treaters is the ultimate way to ensure you are hitting all of the top candy houses.
Maybe try breaking the ice with a comment about their costume. After that, you could get the candy conversation going by talking about one of the best houses you’ve visited so far.
Stepping outside of your comfort zone is definitely worth the satisfaction you will feel when you have a pillow case filled to the brim with king sized candy bars. Who knows, you might even make some new friends.
4. Use an App
For the technologically advanced, you can check out the app Nextdoor, which allows neighbors to post about their surrounding houses.
There’s probably not going to be information on every single house, but it’s worth looking into if you’re really trying to cover all of your angles. You could even get some good karma by posting about the houses you’ve gone to.
Bottom Line
Using a little common sense and some critical thinking will go a long way when you’re out on the candy hunt. Just be safe out there, and after you’ve chowed down on your seemingly endless supply of quality treats—make sure to brush your teeth!

Carter Wessman
Carter Wessman is originally from the charming town of Norfolk, Massachusetts. When he isn’t busy writing about mortgage related topics, you can find him playing table tennis, or jamming on his bass guitar.
