Loyalty program. Frontier’s loyalty program may not offer a ton of perks, but if you manage to earn top-tier elite status, you and your family will enjoy benefits such as complimentary stretch seating, free checked bags and priority boarding.

Those who have travel protections through a credit card or who book reservations with penalty-free cancellation policies may not need to buy travel insurance for all of their trips. But, a single-trip policy could be a good idea if you want to protect a trip with substantial prepaid, non-refundable reservations. They’re also useful when you want to customize the coverage for each trip.
Annual plan
Those who travel multiple times a year may be better off with an annual or multi-trip plan. These travel insurance plans protect all of your trips during the coverage period. They can be more cost-effective than buying multiple single-trip policies. Plus, you won’t have to remember to buy a policy every time you book a trip.
The downside of annual plans is that they may not be available for all travelers. For example, some insurers don’t offer annual plans for travelers age 70 and over. There are also typically limitations on the length of each trip in order to be covered.
Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance
Most travel insurance policies allow you to get reimbursed for a canceled trip only for covered reasons. If your reason falls outside of those guidelines, you won’t receive compensation. One way to get around this is to add Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage to your policy.
With CFAR coverage, you have more flexibility in canceling your trip while still being eligible to submit a claim. For example, even if a hurricane isn’t headed directly for your destination, you may decide to cancel your beach vacation because of predicted storm-related rain.
Keep in mind that CFAR cancellation coverage amounts are typically limited to 50% to 75% of your prepaid, non-refundable expenses. In other words, you won’t be fully reimbursed for your travel expenses even if you’re using CFAR coverage.

Lauren Gumport was en route to a vacation on the island of Chios, Greece, in July, where she was set to stay in an Airbnb for five nights with her best friend.
But upon her arrival in Athens to connect to her flight to Chios, she received a WhatsApp message from someone stating that their dad owned the Airbnb property, but that they managed it. The son said they’d be out of town — and that their dad didn’t speak English — but that Gumport would still be able to check in with the dad.
Gumport, who works for the travel insurance company Faye, is no stranger to stories of travel mishaps. She sensed something was off but forged ahead with the Chios flight. When she arrived at the meeting spot near the Airbnb, no one was there.
“It was hot and not in a touristy area, so it didn’t feel great,” she says. “We were exhausted from the flights and just wanted to drop our bags, so that was frustrating.”
She had an international cell phone plan, so after 15 minutes of waiting for the owner, she called Airbnb customer service. An hour later, an Airbnb customer service agent finally offered to rebook them elsewhere. But with no other suitable Airbnb listings, Gumport declined the offer. Airbnb then offered to pay for two nights at a hotel.
“Airbnb didn’t give any type of nightly cap on cost, and frankly the island didn’t have a ton of options,” she said. “We found a great hotel and sent Airbnb the receipt.”
The two-night hotel stay came out to $443.50, and Gumport received a reimbursement from Airbnb to her bank account in a few days. Airbnb also refunded the $434.22 cost of her original five-night reservation.
As for the other three nights they were supposed to spend in Chios? Gumport took the opportunity to check out another Greek island, where she booked a last-minute stay.
What happens if your host doesn’t show up?
Gumport contacted Airbnb as soon as she realized her host wasn’t there and says Airbnb appropriately compensated her for the inconvenience.
“Luckily, my friend and I have traveled so much that when things go wrong, we just quickly pivot and laugh it off,” she said. “We stayed two nights in the other hotel, had a great time, then hopped on a ferry to Samos, Greece, for the rest of our trip.”
But not all vacation rental companies have robust customer support, and not all will be as generous with compensation. Plus, not all travelers will be able to pivot like Gumport.
And it’s not just vacation rental companies, like Airbnb or Vrbo, where ghosting is a risk. It’s a challenge facing the ever-growing list of peer-to-peer travel platforms. That includes RV rental companies like Outdoorsy or RVshare, and rental car companies like Turo. There’s also a boat equivalent called GetMyBoat.
Each company has its own set of policies to mitigate mishaps. Some immediately rebook the closest alternative, which can often entail an upgrade. If the owner of the Toyota you booked through Turo doesn’t show up, the company might instead send a Tesla.
But even an upgraded Tesla might not come without some stress. Turo says you need to wait at least 30 minutes past the trip start time before you can contact customer support, according to a note on its help page. That’s 30 minutes you might be sitting on a curb in a foreign city, followed by the transport time hauling your bags to a different location once the company has found an alternative.
Also, the second option might not be exactly what you wanted. You may have to sacrifice features found in your initial vacation rental booking, like laundry or a kitchen, given the last-minute arrangement. Potential “upgrades” might not be much better, such as a larger car that just proves harder to park.
For what it’s worth, many sites that facilitate peer-to-peer rental services have increasingly cracked down on hosts who cancel reservations. In September 2023, vacation rental site Vrbo began instituting financial penalties for hosts. The amount of the fee is based on the overall cost of the listing, as well as how far out they cancel.
Have a plan in case you get ghosted
What if you make it to the check-in time and the host hasn’t canceled but also hasn’t materialized? Sometimes careful pre-trip research can’t prevent ghosting, but backup plans during the trip are critical.
Understand the booking company’s policies. For example, Airbnb promises to help rebook guests into a similar place if the host cancels, but the promise only applies to cancellations made by the host within 30 days of check-in. So, if the host cancels 31 days before Super Bowl Sunday for a home in the host city, good luck finding affordable alternative lodging.
Carefully read the reviews and only book listings that have plentiful, positive reviews. Previous guests might offer insights into the host’s reliability and help indicate which rentals to skip.
Have contact information handy for the host and customer support. Should you be abroad, consider purchasing an international phone plan or at least know where to find free Wi-Fi (such as train stations or cafes).
Research nearby alternatives, including other available listings. Be prepared to be flexible and change plans if necessary.
Take advantage of last-minute deals. Just as Gumport ferried to another Greek island for part of her stay, you could be similarly flexible. Hotels can often be cheaper when booked last minute anyway. Jamie Lane, chief economist at vacation rental data platform AirDNA, says the same holds true with lodging beyond hotels.
“Ask for last-minute deals,” Lane says. “Unbooked weeks or recent cancellations can lead to big discounts to fill open nights.”

Vueling Airlines is a low-cost European carrier based in Spain. As is typical with budget airlines, you’ll need to pay for all add-ons when you fly, and all seats on the plane are economy. However, if you’re looking to save money and don’t care about these extras, Vueling could be a good choice.
Here’s a review of a Vueling Airlines flight from Barcelona, Spain, to Amsterdam and what you can expect when flying with this carrier.
What is Vueling Airlines?
Vueling is a budget airline, flying to over 100 destinations within Europe and to various countries in Africa and the Middle East. Vueling Club, the airline’s loyalty program, allows you to earn Avios on your flights. The airline also has an app where you can book trips, check into a flight, review flight info and more.
Airport experience: Check-in and baggage drop
The entire airport experience from the check-in kiosk to the bag drop was fast and efficient. It took no more than 10 minutes.
Vueling check-in kiosk
I saw many self-service check-in counters at the airport and followed the signs to Vueling’s check-in area. I had already checked in on the app, but I used the kiosk to print a luggage tag since I had a bag to check. (You can also check in at the kiosk).
After printing my luggage tag, I attached it to my bag based on the easy-to-follow instructions displayed on the kiosk. When attaching the luggage tag to your bag, you keep a part of the luggage tag that displays your bag tag information. I took a photo of this like I always do, in case I lose the piece of paper.
Vueling baggage drop
Right next to the check-in kiosks is the self-service baggage drop section. I was impressed with this area rather than the usual long line I am used to seeing when I want to check luggage at the airport. In addition, plenty of Vueling employees were walking around offering help to anyone who needed it.
In the bag drop area, I found an empty station and placed my luggage on the conveyor belt so that it could be weighed. I also scanned my boarding pass using the handheld scanner attached to the screen, which then displayed my flight information. I would assume that if my bag were overweight, I would have been prompted to pay extra for the weight.
My bag was within the allowance, so at this point, the conveyor belt began moving and took my bag. The entire process was straightforward between the check-in kiosk and the self-service baggage drop area. I wish more airlines would adopt this approach.
Vueling baggage policy
It’s important to remember that since Vueling is a budget airline, checked luggage or even a carry-on bag isn’t free on most fares. However, Vueling allows all passengers to bring an underseat cabin bag for free.
Only the TimeFlex Fare includes a carry-on bag up to 10 kilograms (22 pounds) at a maximum size of 55 x 40 x 20 centimeters (21.6 x 15.7 x 7.9 inches). If you’re flying on another fare, you can add a carry-on on the app or website for 24 to 59 euros (about $26 to $65). Doing this at the airport will cost 55 to 75 euros (about $60 to $82).
If your carry-on is larger or heavier, it must be checked. When adding checked luggage to your reservation, Vueling provides different prices depending on the weight of your bag. The weight options range from 15 to 30 kilograms for a checked bag.
According to Vueling, you can save up to 50% on your luggage fees if you purchase your checked bag up to a day before your flight on the website or app. I had a 20-kilogram bag and paid 35 euros (about $38) at booking for my checked bag.
Seats: Comfort depends on where you sit
My flight from Barcelona to Amsterdam was on the Airbus A320, which features 180 standard economy seats. All the seats are the same, with a seat pitch of 29 inches and a width of 17.7 inches. The only difference between the seats is that some have extra legroom due to their positioning in the front of the plane or at the exit row.
While I was initially seated in seat 22B, I was moved before takeoff into seat 1D. As a 5-foot-5-inch passenger, I had minimal legroom in seat 22B.
The seat pocket in front was large enough to hold my headphones case and power bank. I could have probably stuffed a water bottle into the pocket too. When I moved to seat 1D, there was significantly more legroom.
In seat 1D, the space for storing belongings was reduced. This is a common feature of seats at the bulkhead, along with no underseat storage. I didn’t mind because the space felt much more comfortable due to the extra legroom.
The carpet in this area looked pretty worn and was already dirty, and we hadn’t even taken off yet.
If you plan on flying Vueling and legroom is important to you, sitting in row 1 is your best bet. I didn’t get a chance to check out the legroom in the exit rows. You can also check how much different Vueling seats cost on Vueling’s website.
Food and beverage: Plenty of choice but not free
Although the trip from Barcelona to Amsterdam was only around two hours, there were plenty of drink and food choices for sale on the flight. Each seatback pocket included an extensive menu, featuring a QR code on the front cover to view the digital menu.

Since it was a quick flight, and I had already eaten in the Priority Pass lounge, I decided to just buy some snacks. I chose a Coke Zero, mixed olives and truffled almonds, which totaled $11. It was really tasty and I was satisfied with my purchase.

However, as a budget airline, you’ll need to pay to check a bag, pick a seat and enjoy food and drinks on your flight.
Nonetheless, I was impressed with the speedy luggage check process and the tasty snacks on board. So if you’re looking to save money while traveling around Europe, Vueling offers a good option.

Delta Air Lines is implementing some major changes to its SkyMiles program. The airline is overhauling how members qualify for elite status. In making the changes, Delta will do away with requirements for Medallion Qualifying Miles (MQMs) and Segments (MQSs). Instead, SkyMiles members will qualify for Medallion elite status solely through Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs).
Customers will be able to earn MQDs through spending on flights, rental cars and hotels booked through Delta Air Lines, along with everyday spending charged to co-branded Delta credit cards.
The changes take effect Jan. 1, 2024. Delta officials say the move is designed to simplify the program.
“One of the consistent pieces of feedback is to earn status can sometimes be complicated,” says Dwight James, Delta’s senior vice president for customer engagement and loyalty. He explained customer feedback also prompted Delta to add more rewards for loyalty beyond traditional air travel.
In conjunction with the SkyMiles overhaul, Delta plans to significantly restrict access to its Sky Club airport lounges, which have been plagued by overcrowding in recent years. And company officials told NerdWallet that more changes to its elite status benefits are on the way, too.

How to earn elite status with Delta in 2024
In perhaps the most significant change, Delta will tie elite status qualification more closely — indeed, solely — to spending. Starting in 2024, MQDs will be the lone measurement for how members qualify for Medallion elite status.

Million Miler Status changes
Delta is also making some changes for Million Miler Status members. Starting next year, Million Miler members will be in the number three priority position for complimentary upgrades. That means they will now get selected for upgrades over Delta SkyMiles Reserve credit cardholders and Delta corporate travelers.
Any MQMs earned toward the status will remain, and going forward, all flight miles earned will be added to customers’ Million Miler balance.
2024 Delta Sky Club access changes
Delta has tweaked its Sky Club access policies next year in an effort to stem overcrowding — an issue the company has worked to address for years.
“Visit growth has outpaced seat growth,” James acknowledged, noting Delta’s hope to preserve the “elevated experience,” especially for Delta’s most premium customers.

What these changes mean for Delta flyers
Delta’s changes for next year represent a major overhaul for the SkyMiles program. In tying elite status qualification more closely to spending, Delta’s changes have some resemblance to American Airlines’ shift to Loyalty Points for its AAdvantage program. In theory, you could now reach Medallion status while flying sparingly.
Delta says the changes are a way to appeal to a higher number of members while continuing to emphasize its premium customers and rewarding other travel engagement with the company, which James notes is up 50% since 2018.
“This program is something that we think we have built very uniquely for all levels of membership, whether you’re a new member or Medallion,” he says.
The people affected perhaps the most negatively by the changes are the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card members, who will lose Sky Club access as part of the company’s ongoing effort to reduce overcrowding.
Meanwhile, what elite status tiers will look like in the future may change a bit, too. Company officials say they’ll announce additional and revamped elite status benefits at a later date.
