The Adirondack Mountains are a gorgeous outdoor wonderland, attracting tourists from all over the world. The park covers 20% of New York state (3x larger than Yellowstone!). Perhaps the “ADK’s” most extraordinary natural resources are the 46 “High Peaks” in the park’s northeast corner.
Friend-of-the-blog/pod Tyler led me on one of my first High Peak adventures (hey Tyler, thanks for reading!). We conquered the Dix Range, summiting four peaks in one day, trudging ~15 miles through the mountainous woods over 11 hours
Hiking is Hard Work
It was a draining day. I drank more water than expected and chafed in…uncomfortable…ways. I ate dinner for two that night and slept like a baby and learned many applicable lessons for my next hike.
For example, during our rest breaks at the summits, I observed the other hikers around us. What were they doing that I wasn’t? Some were fit and lean, others a bit overweight. Some had expensive gear, others had gym shorts and sneakers. The pros drank from Nalgene bottles and ate rehydrated meals. The amateurs had Poland Spring bottles and Nutrigrain bars.
All shapes and sizes. There was a broad spectrum between the expertly prepared and the woefully inexperienced. Yet all of these hikers had reached the top. And hopefully they all got back to the bottom, too.
Are You Prepared?
More preparedness requires more research, more time, and more money. But it provides a higher probability of summiting the mountain(s), a more straightforward path, and the mental confidence of knowing you’re prepared.
Less preparedness is easier upfront. But is it easy in the long run? Likely not. “A stitch, in time, saves nine,” as Ben Franklin said. This idea rhymes with the concept of, “Hard choices, easy life. Easy choices, hard life.”
Where do you want to fall on the spectrum of preparedness? That’s totally your call. There is no correct answer in general, but only a correct answer for you.
You’ll hopefully reach “the summit” either way. But your preparedness provides flexibility in how easy or hard that journey will be.
Retirement Works the Same Way
In my experience running The Best Interest and working professionally in financial planning, retirement preparedness works the same way. I received a perfect example last week via email from a blog reader, Jon…
Hi Jesse, my wife and I are 56 and 58 years old, respectively, and on the verge of retirement, I hope. We have about $2M in Traditional accounts, $510K in Roth accounts, and $430K in taxable accounts. 95% of that money is invested in diversified stocks. We’ll both receive significant Social Security benefits (north of $3K/month each at age 67). We live within our means…last year our total outflow of money was just shy of $90,000. Do you think we’re ready to retire? Can we chat with you about retirement readiness?
Jon (and Eva)
Some quick math: Jon and Eva have $2.9M in assets to support an $90,000 annual lifestyle. They’re at less than a 3% annual withdrawal rate, and we haven’t even accounted for their Social Security income. They are more than set!
Do Jon and Eva need professional help? I don’t see how.
Could Jon and Eva benefitfrom professional help? I’m positive.
It’s like my adventure in the Dix Range. I conquered the mountains! I didn’t need to be more prepared. But I could have (and should have) done many things differently to make my day more manageable and eliminate the probability of failure.
Many of us don’t need intervention. But it would undoubtedly help.
Questions for Jon and Eva
I find it hard to imagine a scenario where Jon and Eva live a failed financial retirement, regardless of professional advice. They’re on course to “summit the mountain.” Still, many critical financial questions come to my mind:
They’re retiring before 59.5 (the age of normal IRA distributions). What’s their plan for funding those intervening years?
Fof 99%+ of people on the verge of retirement, a portfolio of 95% stocks is inappropriate. Red flag!
In general, how do they plan on balancing withdrawals from their Roth accounts (no tax), their Traditional accounts (fully taxable as Income), and the taxable accounts (with capital gains)? Done poorly, they’ll “leak” money to taxes.
Are they sure waiting until 67 is the optimal Social Security move for both of them? It usually isn’t.
What’s their healthcare plan before Medicare?
Do they have any significant financial goals beyond “live our normal lifestyle?” Are they prepared to fund those goals?
And many more. There are lots of puzzle pieces to retirement and many ways to arrange them.
I’m sure Jon and Eva have answers. However, my experience with similar families is that their answers are rarely optimized. While it’s terrific that they’re better off than most, there’s still room for optimization – and therefore, room for dollars saved and dollars earned.
If they were hikers, they’d be in peak physical shape (peak?!) with plenty of water. I can’t see them failing to get up the mountain. But did they bring a map and compass, just in case? Are they aware those cotton underpants are going to get very uncomfortable? Or that the trailhead parking lot is “by reservation only?”
They’ll reach the summit regardless. But their day will be more annoying than it needed to be. Who wants that?!
Is Preparedness Worth It?
Just as I wrote earlier, I’m asking Jon and Eva,
“Where do you want to fall on the spectrum of preparedness? That’s totally your call. There is no right answer in general, but only a right answer for you.”
Based only on Jon’s short email, I have plenty of questions for them. They could use a sanity check (or more) for retirement preparedness.
But preparedness costs money, time, energy, etc. Do they want to incur those costs to get more prepared? Will they see enough benefit from those costs, or are they beyond the point of diminishing returns?
Perhaps they’re ready to hit the trail as is. They’ll reach their retirement goals regardless. But they might have more annoying financial moments than needed. Who wants that?!

Real estate finished November as the second best performing group in the S&P 500 Index adding 12%, trailing slightly behind tech’s 13% gain. The momentum was fueled by bets the central bank may begin cutting rates as early as next year.
RELATED: Mortgage rates will decline further, economic signs indicate
In November, the interest-rate sensitive sector was a market outperformer as investors poured capital into the group. A pullback in Treasury yields has also supported trader optimism that the worst of it could be over. Additionally, U.S. real estate investment trusts, which have been beaten-down by surging interest rates and economic uncertainty, are now flashing signs of strength.
The group rallied 12% in November versus the S&P 500’s 9% gain, notching its best month since 2011. Bank of America said it’s overweight the real estate sector ahead of 2024, with Jeffrey Spector calling the REIT sector equity’s “diamond in the rough.” He listed American Homes 4 Rent, Americold Realty Trust, Empire State Realty Trust, Kimco Realty Corp., Prologis Inc. and Welltower Inc. as his top picks in a note to clients Friday.
Battered office landlord stocks have placed a overcast on the REIT sector as a whole, though office only represents a sliver of the group. Investors have been fleeing the office sector as fears of remote work and elevated borrowing costs destabilize the sector.
“Real estate has seen the biggest de-rating since 2021 among all industries on concerns over office, but office is less than 5% of real estate’s market cap,” he said.
While Bank of America remains cautious on the market entering 2024, it still sees real estate as underappreciated.
For homebuilding stocks, the bulk of the monthly advance was made during the first three sessions of November after the Federal Reserve announced it would hold its benchmark rate steady for a second meeting. The index posted three back-to-back gains of more than 4%, ultimately sending the index to post its biggest monthly gain since 2020.
The recent pullback in mortgage rates is likely to further support the sector’s gains, enabling builders to buy down rates to 5.5%, a level that has previously helped demand, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Drew Reading said.
“This would actually make new home payments more favorable versus resales heading into the spring selling season, so the timing is great for the group,” he noted.
Although builder confidence has been on the decline, Capital Economics U.S. Property Economist Thomas Ryan says the sentiment is a misrepresentation of where larger public builders actually stand, as the gauge is largely comprised of smaller private builders.
As such, the typical strong correlation between NAHB homebuilder confidence and housing starts has broken down recently, he said. That divergence was underscored in November after the confidence gauge fell to its lowest level this year, despite housing starts unexpectedly rising to the highest in three months.
“While smaller homebuilders are finding it increasingly difficult to access the credit required to maintain construction activity, their giant competitors are in an extremely strong financial position,” Ryan wrote.
The real estate sector still lags behind the broader market year-to-date, but according to Bank of America, the group may be a bright spot heading into 2024.
All of us have done some foolish things when we were just little kids. Most of those are only for fun and are seemingly safe. However, it’s not always the case; some of the things we do as children can have a greater impact on our childhood—or worse, they’re affecting us in still as adults. Here are 12 things people did innocently as children that affected their childhood. Let us know in the comments if you resonate with some of the things listed here!
1. Messenger Bags and Side-Bangs
Do you like wearing messenger bags? Having bangs when you’re a kid?
Well, one Reddit user shared, “I used to wear messenger bags in the 6th grade to be trendy, and wore my bangs to cover my left eye. Now I have borderline severe scoliosis from the weight of the bag being on one side, and my left eye is lazy.”
2. Playing Music Too Loud
One commenter said, “Wear headphones and play the music as loud as my walkman/discman would go. Now I have tinnitus.”
Another one replied, “Oof it’s rough! I have a particular day and time that I know I screwed my hearing up, and I’ve had tinnitus ever since.”
One Redditor added, “It’s literally what happened to me. I always used to get it would last like 30 seconds and go away. It would suck, but I always knew it would stop. And then… one night, I was sleeping, and it woke me up out of my sleep. It never went away. I’ve had it for 8 years now. Some days are bad, and some days I barely notice it. It’s always noticeable when I’m going to sleep. Just gotta learn to live with it, sadly.”
3. Not Brushing Your Teeth
Were you also lazy about brushing your teeth? Well it doesn’t take long for you to start having dental problems.
“Was too lazy to brush my teeth. My parents didn’t seem to notice if I did it or not. I’d probably only do it for like 30 seconds every other day. And only ever once a day. I’m now facing lots of expensive treatment and having to go to private because getting an NHS is nigh on impossible,” one user shared.
“Same. Spent over £3k sorting my teeth in my 20’s, from years of neglect. 12 fillings, two root canals and 3 years of braces. Decent enough teeth now thankfully, but could have [saved] much pain if I’d [brushed] and [gone to the dentist],” someone replied.
4. Lying on One Side Too Much
One Reddit user shared, “I used to use my laptop lying down on one side with my arm propping up my head, for hours and hours. I have permanent back alignment issues.”
Another user replied, “I still do this when I’m tired, and it always ends up with a first rib subluxation. I’m used to doing it, though, it’s a tough habit to break.”
Another one added, “I have always leaned on my right side, and now I have tendinitis in my rotator cuff, and I’m only reminded not to lean if it starts hurting shortly after I start leaning that way.”
5. Finding Safe Places
Some of us have had a terrible childhood, and sadly, most of those memories and defense mechanisms we’ve come to use as children will still greatly affect us in adulthood.
One person stated, “Hide in small spaces to get away from my abusive parents. Now whenever I’m panicking, I try to look for small spaces to hide in and will panic more if I can’t find one.”
The second person replied, “The feeling of despair I get when I realize there’s nowhere for me to hide is terrible. It’s like being stuck in the middle of the ocean. I’m sorry you experienced the same thing.”
6. Being Antisocial
While you may have enjoyed your own company as a child by playing video games all day, it may ultimately significantly impact your adulthood.
One Redditor stated, “Being an introvert and staying home playing video games all the time, now that I’m 28 don’t have any friends, the loneliness is getting worse.”
Another one replied, “Oof I feel this. I never really learned how to be social and make lasting friends. At least I found a husband who also avoided everyone and played video games lol.”
One commenter said, “I kinda feel this, but I don’t regret the gaming. It was fun. And I still made lots of friends when I went to college, who I still hang out and play games with. Maybe I’m just lucky, but you might find some luck too if you manage to find people who share your interests.”
7. Wearing Bad Shoes
“Wore nothing but chucks and flats from age 12 to my late twenties and now my feet are messed up,” someone shared.
“Really? How is that harmful?” another user asked.
“No arch support,” someone replied.
A fourth commenter added, “No. Humans were never made to need arch support. Muscles in the foot should be strengthened by use (barefoot walking). Now we need arch supports because we smash our feet so dang narrow and reshape the foot with modern footwear our feet are literally deformed. Hence the need for supports, cushioning, toe spring, shoes with heel drop, etc.”
8. Not Showing Emotions
One person shared, “Hid my emotions because I was trying to be ‘manly.’ Now I have psychological issues from trying to be someone other than myself, not to mention high blood pressure, back and neck pain, hair loss, and a number of other ailments.”
Then the second person replied, “I’m sad that the older generations were taught that men shouldn’t ‘have emotions’, I’m glad it’s being realized that everyone has emotions, we’re not robots after all! I hope you find peace.”
9. Eating Your Feelings
Do you binge eat when things get too complicated and too much to handle? While it can help you a bit when dealing with stress, it actually does more harm than good.
“I have a weird relationship with food from binge eating so much and my dad basically getting us McDonald’s on the daily. I’m not overweight, but I’m definitely unhealthy and steadily gaining more weight than I’m comfortable with. Cooking somewhat healthy meals at home is easy for a week, then I fall back into my old ways.”
“Put a stop to it now seriously i was raised on McDonald’s and Burger King. I’m 32 and literally… I’m the fattest I’ve ever been. Just got a trainer, and his reaction to my soda intake was an eye opener,” someone replied.
10. Staring at the Sun
Do you remember staring at the sun when you were a kid? Well, you’re not the only one.
“I don’t know why, but I stared at the sun wearing 3d glasses for a minute or two. Now, when I close my left eye, the white walls are very slightly reddish. When I close my right eye, the white walls are very slightly bluish. Definitely damaged some cones in my eyes,” shared one person.
11. Bullying Others
One person stated, “I was a bully. A horrible bully. And I live with shame every day of my life because of it.”
The second person replied, “You can’t undo your past, but you can work on doing some ‘good’—help the underprivileged, something for the environment, kids, animals… Lots of ways to give back to society and feel better. Make it happen!”
A third commenter added, “Think of it this way: the fact that you feel bad about it now means that you have grown as a person. You know how bad you were before and have the knowledge of how to be good now. A lot of people don’t come to this realization in their whole lives, so you did something special.”

Online banking has made managing money easier than ever. However, it has also led most people to rely solely on digital assets.
Precious metals are a popular investment choice for people wishing to buy a tangible asset that retains its value over time. In particular, gold and silver generally maintain their value even when the stock market faces major financial fluctuations.
They also do well in times of inflation and political uncertainties. When traditional stocks fluctuate due to these external factors, precious metals only become more valuable.
Investors who prefer a hands-off approach have the option of purchasing gold and silver stocks. These stocks are traded daily just like any other stock. However, many people prefer to keep a physical store of their precious metal.
While relatively illiquid, buying physical gold and silver is typically viewed as a long-term investment. It’s certainly a practical option if you’re concerned about inflation or the future of fiat currency.

There’s a flat rate shipping fee of $25 for any order under $500. Otherwise, shipping, handling, and insurance are free. In addition to traditional payment options, GoldSilver also accepts PayPal.

The Basics of Precious Metals
Before buying gold or silver, it’s important to understand the different forms they come in. Each type has its pros and cons. Some people focus on one kind they prefer, while others create a diverse mix of different kinds. Before you buy precious metals, figure out which strategy is best for you.
Silver
Let’s start by talking about silver. Typically, you can buy silver either in the form of bullion or junk silver. Silver bullion refers to silver as a bar, coin, ingot, or round.
Silver Coins
The most popular silver coins you’ll come across are as follows:
American Silver Eagle
Canadian Silver Maple Leaf
British Silver Britannia
Mexican Silver Libertad
Austrian Silver Philharmonic
South African Silver Krugerrand
Australian Silver Kangaroo
Chinese Silver Panda
Junk Silver
Junk silver, on the other hand, is any type of old U.S. currency containing real silver. Any U.S. half-quarters, quarters, or dimes minted before 1965 are considered junk silver. However, in reality, they aren’t very junky at all.
You can sometimes find junk silver below the spot price. This can often allow you to start with a profit on your investment.
Silver Rounds
Silver rounds are privately minted silver pieces shaped like coins but produced by private mints. They are not government minted or legal tender, so they are not referred to as coins. The most popular silver round is the American Silver Buffalo. However, Scottsdale Mint also produces some beautiful rounds called “Omnia.”
Gold
Gold also comes in bars and coins, each one giving you a different type of entry point into precious metal investing. Buying gold coins is the easiest way for gold investors to start because you can begin by just purchasing a few at a low price point.
Gold Coins
The most popular gold coins to buy are as follows:
American Gold Eagle
Canadian Gold Maple Leaf
British Gold Britannia
British Gold Queen’s Beast
Mexican Gold Libertad
Austrian Gold Philharmonic
South African Gold Krugerrand
Australian Gold Kangaroo
Chinese Gold Panda
Gold Rounds
Similar to silver rounds, the most popular is the American Gold Buffalo.
Perhaps you’re stocking up as a hedge against inflation or to use as currency in a potential crisis. If so, you’ll find that coins of any type (gold or silver) will be easier to barter with than bars.
If you decide to buy bars, you can get them in different sizes to suit your space or budget. For example, you can purchase 1 to 10-ounce gold bars or up to 100-ounce silver bars. You can even find bars at just a fraction of an ounce if you want to start small.
One of the most significant advantages of this tactic is that you get the lowest premium when you buy larger bars. So while they might not be as easy to sell when you’re ready, you’ll get a better value if you can make that large of an investment upfront.
Copper
While silver and gold are the most popular, there are other precious metals to consider as well. For example, copper also comes in bars, rounds, and coins and is very affordable for novice investors.
Some experts believe it’s a wise investment opportunity because of its rising demand and shrinking supply.
Platinum and Palladium
Platinum is perhaps the most precious of all metals. It’s 15x rarer than gold, and its value exceeds that of gold. Platinum is usually sold as coins minted in the U.S., Canada, or Australia.
Palladium is similar to platinum in its properties and is actually 30x rarer than gold. Because these metals are so rare, not many people invest in them. However, a growing number of investors are adding them to their portfolios. It’s something you may want to consider as well.
Gold and Silver: Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the best place to buy gold?
The two best places to buy gold are online retailers and local coin shops.
Online retailers, such as the ones we’ve listed above, offer a wide selection of gold coins, bars, and rounds at competitive prices. These retailers often offer free shipping and insurance, making it easy and convenient to buy gold from the comfort of your own home.
Local coin shops are another great option if you want to prefer gold in person. These shops often have a knowledgeable staff who can help you find the right gold products for your needs and budget. You may also be able to negotiate on price of the gold.
Where is the best place to buy silver?
The best place to buy silver is typically also the best place to buy gold: online dealers and local shops. These options provide a wide range of products to choose from and allow you to compare prices and quality before making a purchase.
Online dealers offer the convenience of shopping from home, while local shops provide the advantage of in-person interaction with knowledgeable staff who can answer your questions and guide you towards the right products for your investment goals.
Whether you want to buy silver coins or silver bars, these options typically offer competitive prices, flexible shipping policies, and convenient payment options.
We recommend checking out at least a few of the best online gold dealers we mentioned above, regardless of what your needs are. Compare prices, selection, and shipping policies on numerous sites.
What is the cheapest way to buy gold and silver?
The most cost-effective method of acquiring gold and silver is by buying bars. They tend to have smaller markups compared to spot prices compared to coins, due to their lower production costs.
Buying in bulk is also a smart way to lower the cost per ounce as many online dealers offer discounts for larger purchases.
Is it safe to buy gold and silver online?
Buying precious metals online is as safe as any other transaction you make online. It’s also just as safe to buy online is as it is to buy from a physical retailer. The key is to buy gold and silver from a reputable gold dealer.
Is it better to buy gold coins or bars?
There is no right or wrong answer to this question. It depends on your situation, your needs, your budget, and what you prefer. As mentioned, it’s typically cheaper to buy gold bars. However, you will most likely get a better value from gold coins when it comes time to sell your gold.
Gold and silver coins and small bars offer more flexibility when it comes time to sell. Owning smaller units of gold and silver allows you to sell only a portion of your precious metals instead of your whole portfolio.
How much gold and silver should I own?
Experts recommend holding 5-25% of your net worth in precious metals. However, it depends on your goals, your situation, and risk tolerance. Precious metals can be a great addition to your portfolio as long as you know why you’re adding it.
Can I store gold at home?
Storing gold in your home offers a sense of security and privacy for your valuable assets. As a form of wealth preservation, it provides complete control without the need for outside storage. However, it’s crucial to be mindful of potential security threats and to ensure your assets are adequately insured.
To mitigate these risks, it’s advisable to implement a secure storage system. Ultimately, home storage is a viable solution for individuals who value personal ownership and control of their gold holdings.
GuideWell Mutual Holding Corp., the parent company of health insurer Florida Blue, is the biggest company headquartered in Jacksonville.
But as a mutual holding company that doesn’t publicly report financial results, we don’t often have a chance to know how big it is.
However, as the company announced the appointment of a new chief financial officer Sept. 27, its news release indicated GuideWell has grown significantly in just the last two years.
The announcement of Jeffrey Goddard’s appointment said GuideWell has grown into a “health solutions enterprise” with annual revenue of $30 billion.
That would make GuideWell one of the 150 largest U.S. companies, based on Fortune 500 data. But Fortune magazine’s annual list of largest companies doesn’t include businesses that don’t publicly report data.
Just two years ago, GuideWell was saying annual revenue was at $20 billion.
The company did expand in February 2022 with the acquisition of Triple-S Management Corp., licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance brand in Puerto Rico, adding about $4 billion in revenue.
Besides Florida Blue and Triple-S, GuideWell said it owns or has significant interests in several other health care businesses.
GuideWell is about double the size of the largest Jacksonville-based company in the Fortune 500.
Railroad company CSX Corp. ranked 279th with 2022 revenue of $14.86 billion.
GuideWell said Goddard joined the company as executive vice president and CFO, succeeding Thurman Justice, who took over leadership of the managed care business at Triple-S.
Goddard was most recently senior vice president and CFO for CVS Caremark.
ICE: Black Knight deal helps mortgage ‘ecosystem’
After Intercontinental Exchange Inc. agreed in May 2022 to acquire Jacksonville-based mortgage technology firm Black Knight Inc., antitrust officials were concerned the deal would give ICE too much control over mortgage technology in the U.S.
Now that the deal is completed, ICE officials said in a Sept. 28 conference call the merged businesses will benefit everyone involved in the mortgage process.
Ben Jackson, president of ICE’s mortgage technology business, said the company was convinced when it agreed to buy Black Knight that the deal would result in an improved mortgage workflow.
“Over the last 16 months, our confidence in that strategic vision has only increased,” he said.
ICE’s technology will be able to handle mortgage loans from origination to final settlement “in one digital ecosystem,” Jackson said.
Black Knight dominated the market for technology for servicing existing home loans, handling processing for nearly two-thirds of all first mortgage loans.
ICE is the market leader in technology for originating mortgage loans.
“The breadth and depth of what we have assembled touches nearly every home mortgage in the United States and is a platform that we believe will enable us to provide the foundation for improving risk management in this major consumer credit market,” ICE Chief Executive Jeff Sprecher said in the conference call.
“Together with Black Knight, ICE is well positioned to improve the execution and subsequent settlement and servicing of U.S. home mortgages, the major credit exposure for most U.S. consumers,” he said.
To satisfy antitrust concerns and gain Federal Trade Commission approval for the merger, the companies agreed to sell off Black Knight’s loan origination technology business called Empower and its data subsidiary Optimal Blue.
However, the deals to sell those units to Constellation Software Inc. included an agreement that will give ICE mortgage technology clients access to Optimal Blue’s data services under its new ownership.
While ICE’s mortgage technology operations serve business customers, Sprecher said the merged company will be able to provide data that will help its clients deal with consumers.
“With Black Knight, we are now in a position to see data and micro trends that give us valuable insight into existing homeowners and prospective homeowners in the United States,” he said.
Black Knight is a successor to a long line of Jacksonville-based companies that have provided mortgage technology services since the 1960s.
ICE has not announced any specific plans for Black Knight’s Jacksonville operations after the merger.
A company spokesperson said in an emailed statement Oct. 3: “With about two thousand people already in Jacksonville, and room to grow, it will quickly become an important part of ICE’s operations.”
Atlanta-based ICE provides financial technology in a number of areas and is best known as operator of the New York Stock Exchange.
Jackson said in the conference call that with Black Knight added to the company, the mortgage technology business will increase from 14% of ICE’s total revenue to 25%.
St. Joe gains help chairman’s fund
Reuters news service reported that a strong third-quarter stock performance for The St. Joe Co. helped its chairman’s mutual fund produce some of the best returns for the quarter.
St. Joe Chairman Bruce Berkowitz’s Fairholme Fund controls about 34% of the company’s stock, according to its latest Securities and Exchange Commission filings, and Reuters said the fund has more than 80% of its assets in St. Joe stock.
As the overall market fell in the third quarter, St. Joe’s stock rose 14%, with a big gain in late July after the real estate development company reported strong third-quarter earnings.
As a result, Fairholme rose 17% in the quarter while another fund with a large stake in St. Joe, the Schwartz Value Focused Fund, rose nearly 15%, Reuters said.
Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2.6% and the S&P 500 fell 3.6% in the quarter.
Panama City Beach-based St. Joe was a long-time conglomerate headquartered in Jacksonville before selling off its other businesses to focus on real estate development.
The company moved the headquarters to the Florida Panhandle in 2010 to be closer to its real estate holdings.
High rates affect Dream Finders, other homebuilders
Dream Finders Homes Inc. was the best-performing stock among Jacksonville-based companies in the first half of 2023, nearly tripling in price.
However, continued high interest rates are hurting the homebuilder sector, and Dream Finders’ stock has dropped sharply since peaking in early August.
The stock ended the third quarter at $22.23, down nearly 30% from its Aug. 7 peak of $31.60 and down nearly 10% for the entire third quarter.
However, Dream Finders still had a net gain of more than 150% for the first nine months of the year.
FPL parent’s stock drops sharply
NextEra Energy Inc.’s stock dropped sharply after a related business said it was cutting its growth expectations.
Juno Beach-based NextEra is the parent company of Florida Power & Light, which provides electricity to 5.8 million Florida customers. It serves most of the state’s East Coast outside of Jacksonville.
NextEra formed a limited partnership in 2014 called NextEra Energy Partners, or NEP, to own and manage clean energy projects.
The limited partnership announced Sept. 27 it was cutting the expected growth rates for distributions to its shareholders to 5% to 8%, with a target growth rate of 6%, down from the previous level of 12% to 15%.
NEP cited tighter monetary policy and higher interest rates for the cut.
That caused NEP units to lose more than half their value, falling from about $50 two weeks earlier to a low of $24.25 on Oct. 2.
NextEra’s stock fell from the upper $60s to a low of $50.18 on Oct. 2.
Wells Fargo analyst Neil Kalton cut his rating on NEP from “overweight” to “equal weight” Oct. 2 and cut his price target from $80 to $33.
“Despite a still strong secular backdrop for renewables and a high quality sponsor (NEE), NEP’s existing cost of capital raises questions about the partnership’s ability to execute on growth initiatives,” Kalton said in his research note.
In a Sept. 28 note, J.P. Morgan analyst Jeremy Tonet said he was maintaining his “overweight” rating on NextEra Energy Inc., or NEE, after the NEP announcement.
“While these concerns and sharp NEP weakness could weigh on NEE in the near-term, we see the sell off as overdone. We still see FPL as one of the best utilities in the country (benefiting from a constructive regulatory backdrop and favorable economic trends),” Tonet said.
FEC Railway expanding intermodal services
The Jacksonville-based Florida East Coast Railway announced a deal Sept. 27 that will expand its intermodal business.
FEC, which operates a 351-mile railroad from Jacksonville to Miami, said it agreed with Norfolk Southern Corp. to provide intermodal service at FEC terminals in Fort Pierce and Fort Lauderdale.
Norfolk Southern was already providing services at FEC terminals in Miami and Titusville, it said.
Atlanta-based Norfolk Southern is the main competitor of CSX, providing railroad services in much of the Eastern U.S.
Its railroad connects to FEC’s rail line in Jacksonville.
FEC said the new agreements will help it offer services for freight customers to more U.S. cities outside of Florida.
FEC is owned by GMXT, the transportation subsidiary of Mexico City-based Grupo Mexico.
GMXT acquired the Florida railroad in 2017.
Safe & Green Holdings spinoff completed
Safe & Green Holdings Corp. completed the spinoff of its real estate development subsidiary into a separate company on Sept. 28, and Safe and Green Development Corp. is now trading on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “SGD.”
Safe & Green Holdings continues to trade under the ticker “SGBX.”
The company’s main business is converting cargo shipping containers into buildings, and it announced its plan to spin off its real estate development company in December 2022.
The company was formerly known as SG Blocks and was headquartered in Jacksonville, but it moved its offices to Miami in early 2023.
The moving average is a tool that can help investors decide whether and when to buy or sell a stock. It presents a smoothed-out picture of where a stock’s price has been in the past and where it’s trending now. Investors may compute moving averages over a variety of time frames, and they are useful to both long-term and short-term investors.
What Is a Moving Average?
A moving average is a metric often used in technical analysis. For a stock, it’s a constantly updated average price.
Unlike trying to track a stock price day-to-day, a moving average smooths price volatility and is an indicator of the current direction a price is headed. A moving average reflects past prices — usually a stock’s closing price — so it’s not a predictor of future direction, just what’s happening now or in the past.
You can compute moving averages using almost any time frame. Common time frames include 20-day, 30-day, 50-day, 100-day and 200-day moving averages.
While a moving average is useful on its own when analyzing different types of investments, it also forms the basis of other types of technical indicators, such as the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) and the McClellan Oscillator. 💡 Quick Tip: If you’re opening a brokerage account for the first time, consider starting with an amount of money you’re prepared to lose. Investing always includes the risk of loss, and until you’ve gained some experience, it’s probably wise to start small.
Types of Moving Averages
There are three common types of moving averages that investors might consider when deciding when to buy or sell a stock:
Simple Moving Average:
As the name states, this is the simplest type of moving average. You can calculate the simple moving average by finding the arithmetic mean of a set of data points. For instance, if you had an average daily price for a stock each day for the last 30 days, you would add them all together and divide by the number of days.
The Simple Moving Average (SMA) formula is as follows:
P = Price on a given date
n = The time period
Example: Suppose you were trying to find the simple moving average of a stock price over 10 days.
A weighted moving average (WMA) gives more weight to certain price prices. If you overweight recent prices, for example, the measure becomes more responsive to recent price moves and less prone to the lag effect.
Exponential Moving Average:
An exponential moving average is a type of weighted moving average that calculates changes in a price cumulatively, rather than based on previous average. That means that all previous data values impact the EMA, since there is less variation over time.
Why Would an Investor Use a Moving Average?
Using a moving average to analyze a stock can help you filter out the “noise” that comes from random price fluctuations. By looking at the direction of the moving average, you can get a sense of whether the price is generally moving up or generally moving down. If a moving average is moving sideways (neither up nor down), the price is probably sticking within a window and not fluctuating much.
A moving average is sometimes plotted as a line by itself on a price chart to illustrate price trends. And different moving average lines can be used in tandem to spot changes in direction. For instance, an investor might be looking at a faster moving average (one with a shorter period, such as 10 days) versus a slower moving average (one with a longer period, such as 200 days). When these lines cross each other, it’s called a moving-average crossover, and can indicate that the trend is changing or is about to change.
Moving averages can also indicate support or resistance levels. Support levels are a price level where a downward trending line would be predicted to pause, due to demand or buying interest. A resistance level is a price ceiling where an upward trending line would be expected to plateau due to selling interest. Over time, watching moving averages can help investors identify these levels of support and resistance, and use them to make buy/sell decisions. 💡 Quick Tip: How to manage potential risk factors in a self-directed investment account? Doing your research and employing strategies like dollar-cost averaging and diversification may help mitigate financial risk when trading stocks.
Pros of Using a Moving Average
A moving average offers several benefits to investors.
It smooths the data.
Day-to-day price swings can be confusing to track, and make it difficult to determine a stock’s direction. A moving average smooths out volatility, giving you a better look at how a stock is trending.
It’s a simple gauge.
As an analytical tool, a simple moving average is easy to interpret. If a stock’s current price is higher than an upward trending moving average line, the stock is headed up in the short-term. If a stock’s price is lower than a downward trending moving average line, the stock is headed down in the short-term.
Easy to calculate.
A moving average is a relatively easy metric, so the average investor can calculate it on their own.
Cons of Using a Moving Average
It’s important to keep the drawbacks of moving averages in mind when using them to determine whether to buy shares of a company.
They’re not predictive.
As with all investments, past performance is not an indicator of future performance, so a moving average — no matter which type you use — can’t tell you what a stock will do next.
There’s a lag.
The longer the period your moving average covers, the greater your lag — meaning how responsive your moving average is to price changes. A 10-day exponential moving average, for instance, will react quickly to price turns, while a 200-day moving average is more sluggish and slower to react to changes.
There’s trouble with price turbulence.
If prices are trending in one direction or another, a moving average may be a helpful metric. But if prices are choppy or volatile, the moving average becomes less useful, since it will swing along with the price. Allowing for a lengthier time frame may resolve this issue, but it can still occur.
Simple moving averages weigh all prices equally. This can be a disadvantage if a stock’s price has taken a significant but recent shift.
Weighted moving averages may send false signals.
Since WMAs put more weight on more recent data, they’re faster to react to price swings, which can occasionally be misleading.
The Takeaway
Moving averages are just one metric you can use to evaluate a stock. They can help quiet the noise of price fluctuations and show you what a stock is doing over time. That said, in some environments or with specific price patterns, moving averages may lag or send a misleading signal.
With that in mind, knowing what a moving average is can be helpful when learning how to size-up potential investments. It’s critical to consider the pros and cons, of course, but moving averages can be another tool in an investor’s tool chest.

Investing in lightweight luggage helps travelers avoid excessive baggage fees.
This is what we did over ten years ago and I can truly say we have saved thousands of dollars.

Vueling Airlines is a low-cost European carrier based in Spain. As is typical with budget airlines, you’ll need to pay for all add-ons when you fly, and all seats on the plane are economy. However, if you’re looking to save money and don’t care about these extras, Vueling could be a good choice.
Here’s a review of a Vueling Airlines flight from Barcelona, Spain, to Amsterdam and what you can expect when flying with this carrier.
What is Vueling Airlines?
Vueling is a budget airline, flying to over 100 destinations within Europe and to various countries in Africa and the Middle East. Vueling Club, the airline’s loyalty program, allows you to earn Avios on your flights. The airline also has an app where you can book trips, check into a flight, review flight info and more.
Airport experience: Check-in and baggage drop
The entire airport experience from the check-in kiosk to the bag drop was fast and efficient. It took no more than 10 minutes.
Vueling check-in kiosk
I saw many self-service check-in counters at the airport and followed the signs to Vueling’s check-in area. I had already checked in on the app, but I used the kiosk to print a luggage tag since I had a bag to check. (You can also check in at the kiosk).
After printing my luggage tag, I attached it to my bag based on the easy-to-follow instructions displayed on the kiosk. When attaching the luggage tag to your bag, you keep a part of the luggage tag that displays your bag tag information. I took a photo of this like I always do, in case I lose the piece of paper.
Vueling baggage drop
Right next to the check-in kiosks is the self-service baggage drop section. I was impressed with this area rather than the usual long line I am used to seeing when I want to check luggage at the airport. In addition, plenty of Vueling employees were walking around offering help to anyone who needed it.
In the bag drop area, I found an empty station and placed my luggage on the conveyor belt so that it could be weighed. I also scanned my boarding pass using the handheld scanner attached to the screen, which then displayed my flight information. I would assume that if my bag were overweight, I would have been prompted to pay extra for the weight.
My bag was within the allowance, so at this point, the conveyor belt began moving and took my bag. The entire process was straightforward between the check-in kiosk and the self-service baggage drop area. I wish more airlines would adopt this approach.
Vueling baggage policy
It’s important to remember that since Vueling is a budget airline, checked luggage or even a carry-on bag isn’t free on most fares. However, Vueling allows all passengers to bring an underseat cabin bag for free.
Only the TimeFlex Fare includes a carry-on bag up to 10 kilograms (22 pounds) at a maximum size of 55 x 40 x 20 centimeters (21.6 x 15.7 x 7.9 inches). If you’re flying on another fare, you can add a carry-on on the app or website for 24 to 59 euros (about $26 to $65). Doing this at the airport will cost 55 to 75 euros (about $60 to $82).
If your carry-on is larger or heavier, it must be checked. When adding checked luggage to your reservation, Vueling provides different prices depending on the weight of your bag. The weight options range from 15 to 30 kilograms for a checked bag.
According to Vueling, you can save up to 50% on your luggage fees if you purchase your checked bag up to a day before your flight on the website or app. I had a 20-kilogram bag and paid 35 euros (about $38) at booking for my checked bag.
Seats: Comfort depends on where you sit
My flight from Barcelona to Amsterdam was on the Airbus A320, which features 180 standard economy seats. All the seats are the same, with a seat pitch of 29 inches and a width of 17.7 inches. The only difference between the seats is that some have extra legroom due to their positioning in the front of the plane or at the exit row.
While I was initially seated in seat 22B, I was moved before takeoff into seat 1D. As a 5-foot-5-inch passenger, I had minimal legroom in seat 22B.
The seat pocket in front was large enough to hold my headphones case and power bank. I could have probably stuffed a water bottle into the pocket too. When I moved to seat 1D, there was significantly more legroom.
In seat 1D, the space for storing belongings was reduced. This is a common feature of seats at the bulkhead, along with no underseat storage. I didn’t mind because the space felt much more comfortable due to the extra legroom.
The carpet in this area looked pretty worn and was already dirty, and we hadn’t even taken off yet.
If you plan on flying Vueling and legroom is important to you, sitting in row 1 is your best bet. I didn’t get a chance to check out the legroom in the exit rows. You can also check how much different Vueling seats cost on Vueling’s website.
Food and beverage: Plenty of choice but not free
Although the trip from Barcelona to Amsterdam was only around two hours, there were plenty of drink and food choices for sale on the flight. Each seatback pocket included an extensive menu, featuring a QR code on the front cover to view the digital menu.
Here are a few photos of what’s featured in the menu to give you an idea of the choices available:
Since it was a quick flight, and I had already eaten in the Priority Pass lounge, I decided to just buy some snacks. I chose a Coke Zero, mixed olives and truffled almonds, which totaled $11. It was really tasty and I was satisfied with my purchase.
Vueling Club
The airline’s loyalty program, Vueling Club, allows passengers to earn Avios on flights at these rates:
Basic fares earn 2 Avios per 1 euro.
Optima, Family and TimeFlex fares earn 4 Avios per 1 euro.
Premium members earn double Avios.
In addition, you can also earn Avios when shopping with Vueling’s partners or through the Vueling eStore.
If you’d rather not earn Avios with Vueling Club, you can credit your flight to Iberia Plus or Aer Lingus AerClub. You can then keep the Avios in those accounts and use them for booking award flights with those programs.
You can also move your Avios to British Airways, providing an additional opportunity for redeeming your Avios. To do so, you’d need to combine your accounts on avios.com.
I credited my Vueling flight to Iberia, because having my Avios with Iberia (or even with British Airways if I choose to combine) provides opportunities for redeeming for award flights with Oneworld airlines.
Final thoughts: Is Vueling a good airline?
Vueling offers many flight options for those traveling within Europe and to certain destinations in Africa and the Middle East at a low cost. The airline provides an opportunity to earn Avios, which are easily transferable to several airlines. However, as a budget airline, you’ll need to pay to check a bag, pick a seat and enjoy food and drinks on your flight.
Nonetheless, I was impressed with the speedy luggage check process and the tasty snacks on board. So if you’re looking to save money while traveling around Europe, Vueling offers a good option.

How to maximize your rewards

It’s a strange time in the world. People are looking for new companionship, especially if they have become permanent remote workers. And everyone is also looking to save a little money. Those are two of the reasons for a recent boom in pet chicken ownership. The “urban chickening” trend has reached all corners. This has left many wondering if a pet chicken is right for me?
The fact is, chickens make wonderful pets and feathery friends. And you might even get to enjoy a trove of fresh eggs along with it. But they’re certainly a far cry from dogs and cats. Pet chickens aren’t for everyone, but if you like the idea, the rewards are many. “They’re cute. They’re fun to watch run around. They’re excited when we come home,” reports pet chicken owners Robert McMinn and Jules Corkery of Queens, NY. What makes this Astoria couple interesting is that they are raising their three hens inside their one-bedroom apartment.
So, can you have a chicken in an apartment? The answer is a wholehearted, yes. But to do so takes time, patience, expense, space and permission, as well as the ability to do so in your location and climate. It’s obviously easier to raise a chicken in an apartment if you have a dedicated outdoor space to house them full time. But what about indoors? Indoor chickens are known as “house chickens,” and this is what it takes to own one.
Are you allowed to keep a chicken in your apartment?
Before you even consider purchasing or otherwise acquiring a chicken, you need to find out if you can even have a chicken in your apartment. There are two forces at work to find out — from your landlord and from the government.
Ask your landlord
First, you’ll need to find out from your landlord if they allow chickens, or birds in general, in your lease. If you aren’t allowed pets at all, the answer is probably no. If your apartment is pet-friendly, read your lease to see if it spells out what kind of pets or what size.
If you’re still unsure, contact the landlord or property manager directly to ask. If it’s not expressly forbidden in your lease, you can make the argument to allow them. Additionally, if you rent a unit that’s part of a homeowner’s association, make sure it’s allowed by that entity, too.
Ask your local officials
If your landlord permits chickens, you also need to find out if it’s actually legal where you live. Unfortunately, rules about chicken-keeping vary from municipality to municipality. The first step is to research rules for raising chickens indoors online. This is a good source to begin with.
For more information or to confirm, contact your local county, township or city hall. Ask for the best person with whom to speak to find the legal answer. Before you make your purchase, make sure every entity — your state, your county, your town, township or city — agrees on the legality. It may also require a call to a zoning board or local health department. Be sure you’re researching indoor rules, specifically. If there’s no ordinance prohibiting it, then you’re allowed as long as you follow other regulations like noise and sanitation.
And be aware. Even if keeping chickens is legal, some ordinances require you to get your neighbors’ approval.
Should you have a chicken in your apartment?
Even if you can raise a chicken in your apartment, there’s a question if you should raise a chicken in your apartment. There are many people, from veterinarians to enthusiasts, who believe it’s not good for the chicken to be indoors in an apartment. In the end, only you can decide if you feel it’s humane in your particular situation.
Pros of urban chickening
If you plan on keeping a chicken as a pet (as opposed to as an egg-laying machine), they make wonderful companions. Chickens easily adapt to your lifestyle, especially if you acquire them as chicks. Indoor chickens get used to being around you and will bond with you. Like any pet, they can learn to interact with you. Many chickens will be quite comfortable curling up with you on the couch and watching TV.
But like any pet, the more they get used to their indoor pet lifestyle, the harder it will be to change. Once you raise a chicken as an indoor pet, it would be unkind to send it away to live outdoors. A typical chicken lives an average of 10 years. Be ready to make that decade-long commitment.
Even if you aren’t raising chickens to save money on eggs, it’s still going to happen if yours is a hen. A hen, if that’s your choice, will lay around 300 eggs a year when properly cared for. And yes, the eggs are perfectly fine to eat. And may even save you some money. As an added bonus, hens lay eggs with a hint of the taste of whatever they themselves eat. Giving your chicken table scraps to eat will make your eggs taste like that.
Cons of urban chickening
But remember, chickens, by their nature, are outdoor creatures. Of course, they can adapt to living indoors, but they can often treat your indoors like the outdoors. They’re dirty, smelly and cause messes. They can eat indoor plants and peck holes in your furniture or floor. And, even with precautions, they can and will poop almost anywhere. They require a lot of time and effort. It’s up to you to discern the ROI.
Many enthusiasts turn to chickens as an alternative to traditional pets. But if allergies are a consideration, it isn’t any better luck. While no, chickens don’t have fur, many people are allergic to feathers, dust and dander. Be sure no one in the apartment is allergic before pulling the trigger.
As well, if you already have a cat or dog in the house, consider not adding a chicken. Most house pets aren’t used to being around fowl. They may scare or even harm your indoor pet chicken. And just because chickens aren’t flying birds doesn’t mean they can’t fly. Be aware that many chickens can fly or jump up to 15 feet or so.
What breed is best for an apartment and how many?
There is, of course, no standard “chicken.” Like any pet, you have a variety of breeds to choose from. The friendliest breeds are often the most adaptive to living indoors. Many are known as “lap chickens” because they’ll get used to sitting right in your lap. Some of the best breeds for house chickens include:
Silkie
Barbu D’Uccle
Sultan
Cochin
Bantam
Buff Orpington
Salmon Faverolle
Cochin
Easter Egger
Polish
Silkies are docile, very friendly and act quite quirky. Barbus are fairly small, easy to carry around and can learn to sit on your shoulder. Sultans enjoy the indoors and are often described as sweet and warm.
But chickens are social creatures. They’re born to run in flocks. Keeping fellow chickens as social company is crucial. Experts and breeders suggest never raising a lone chicken. In fact, it’s generally recommended to keep three chickens from the chick stage. That’s often how they’re sold, as well. This is to ensure that if one passes, the other chickens will still have each other.
What do you need to keep a chicken indoors?
While chickens are naturally outdoor creatures, you can still raise a chicken in your apartment like a traditional pet. Indoor chickens are as fun and cuddly as having a dog or cat. They can eat and sleep indoors, and interact with you as you go about your day. But keeping a house chicken is expensive, messy and difficult.
And chickens will bond with you just like cats and dogs. Many feel chickens are aloof or even unintelligent, but they are loyal pets. Your best bet for this is to buy chicks very young. The more you imprint on them from a young age, the stronger the bond. And to keep them happy, give them the best living and feeding situation you can.
Your house chicken’s living area
It’s vital to give your indoor chicken an environment for them to thrive. And that starts with a living area similar to an outdoor coop.
You can buy a specialty cage for your chickens, or even repurpose an old doghouse. Your setup should have a coop, a run and a nest box. The coop should also have a roost, raised a foot to a foot-and-a-half off the ground, high enough to jump to and low enough if they fall. The run should have sawdust and straw as that will also be your chicken’s litter box.
Your chickens should never be confined to or denied access from the coop, but rather given free access to it unsupervised. Their home should have four or five square feet per chicken. If they’re too crowded, chickens have been known to cannibalize.
The entire setup should be in an area least disturbing to both you and them. Chickens enjoy taking “dust baths,” covering themselves in detritus from the run. So, it’s advisable to keep it away from kitchens and bedrooms. You must also decide if the chickens have access to your entire space, or only to certain areas.
And lastly, artificial sunlight is also key, just as it would be to incubate an egg. There are many appropriate indoor avian lamps available. This helps keep their vision sharp and allows their bodies to create proper hormones. Keep these where your chick can sunbathe in the light.
Keep your indoor chicken’s living space clean
Clean the living area between one and three times a week. Your chickens will learn this routine and keep away while you’re cleaning. When you clean, remove the feces, replace the litter (compostable is an excellent option) and wash the floors and sides of each surface as well as the feeders and waterers. Use non-toxic soap and hot water. Wash your hands thoroughly immediately after cleaning or touching any areas. Minimizing salmonella germ spread is an important concern.
And if you’re lucky enough to have an outdoor space like a yard, patio or porch, you can set up their living space outside. But again, the chickens must have free access to it at all times.
What to do with your chicken’s poop
For the most part, your chicken will do their business in the litter area of the coop and run you have set up. Chickens are not cats, and won’t naturally seek out the litter. You can potty train chickens to do so, but it’s not simple. How tame and smart enough your chicken is to do so will make a difference, and you’ll have had to build trust.
Litter box training takes time and patience. And in the meantime, there is a lot of poop to clean around the house. And even after training, accidents will occur, so be prepared.
Additionally, yes, chicken diapers do exist. But experts say diapers are not a permanent option, but only for timely convenience. And keep in mind, that hens lay eggs from the general area from which they poop, which means poopy eggs in poopy diapers. And that’s no fun for anyone.
Feeding your apartment chicken
Your chicken’s primary dietary item is fresh pellets as chicken feed. The makeup of pellets will change with your chicken’s age and life stage. Additionally, you’ll need to add “grit” to the chicken’s feed. Broken oyster shells and small stones in their food help them to digest.
As well, your chickens need 24-hour access to fresh drinking water. You may provide this in a retail chicken waterer. It’s also recommended to add commercial poultry vitamins to the water.
Like any animal and any pet, chickens also love treats. Some favorites include dried mealworms, peeled and cored apples, alfalfa and plain yogurt. But every chicken’s favorite is corn. This is the recommended reward for chicken training. And chickens also love table scraps. Suggestions include pasta, green vegetables, dry cereals, raisins and bananas.
But be judicious with treats, especially ones high in fat. An overweight chicken can become sick very quickly. They will also produce low-quality eggs.
Getting your chicken outdoor time
So, you have decided having a house chicken indoors is the right choice for you. But to make sure it’s the right choice for them, too, your chicken must have significant outdoor time. Chickens, as mentioned, are outdoor creatures, and they won’t thrive stuck indoors.
Chickens thrive when given time to forage in a yard or in a park. If they start trying to eat bits of carpet or other non-food items around your house, that’s a sign they need more outside time. “They need to give themselves dust baths, which kills any body parasites and keeps them clean. It’s important for chickens to be able to scratch in the Earth for bugs, grubs, worms, etc.,” says Owen Taylor, city farms manager at Just Food.
Make time in your schedule for you and your chicken to take a walk outside every day. Possibly several times a day. Chickens need access to the outdoors, sunshine and grass as often as possible. It’s not required they run free in an enclosed area. You can even take them for a walk like a dog. Just be sure to purchase a chicken harness and avoid traffic areas.
Welcome to urban chickening
The answer to the question “Can you have a chicken in an apartment?” full-time indoors is yes. But the more important question is “should you?” That’s a decision you have to make dependent on your budget, time, patience, space, situation and permissions.
You’ll need to do significant prep and research before you jump into the world of indoor urban chickening. Read every website you can. Talk to breeders and fellow enthusiasts. And read up in books like “The Chicken Health Handbook.”
And if every light seems green, proceed cautiously, and enjoy getting to know and bond with your new house chickens. If you’re looking for a pet-friendly apartment in your city, be sure to peruse the listings at Rent..
