Humana is the second-largest Medicare Advantage provider and gets high star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), as well as high member experience scores. More than nine in 10 Humana members are in plans rated 4 stars or above.
UnitedHealthcare is the biggest Medicare Advantage provider and offers the largest Medicare Advantage network, but star ratings from CMS are slightly below the industry average. UHC member experience ratings are middle of the road. Both providers are available in 49 states and Washington, D.C., and Humana is also available in Puerto Rico.

Retired couples who are Medicare beneficiaries could need as much as $413,000 saved to cover medical expenses in the latter stages of life, an increase over the previous year’s estimate of $383,000. This is according to new findings from the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI).
The figure is the “predicted savings target for Medicare beneficiaries to cover premiums, deductibles, and prescription drugs in retirement,” EBRI explained.
The estimates break down differently for single men, women and couples who are part of Medicare supplemental insurance plans, and the figures aim to offer retirees “a 90% chance of meeting their health care spending needs in retirement.”
For single men, the savings figure is $184,000. For single women, the estimated figure is $217,000, while couples in supplemental insurance plans would need an estimated $351,000.
“Health care costs in retirement can be considerable and may not necessarily be a salient issue for workers,” said Jake Spiegel, research associate for health and wealth benefits Research at EBRI. “To project how much Medicare beneficiaries may need to save to have a reasonable chance of meeting their health care spending requirements in retirement, EBRI built a simulation model allowing for uncertainty due to mortality and rates of return on assets in retirement.”
The model takes recent changes to Medicare Part D into account, enacted as part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden.
The EBRI model “tests varying assumptions about Medicare Advantage and [supplemental insurance] plans that Medicare beneficiaries may purchase,” Spiegel explained. “The output of this updated simulation model is the basis of this new report.”
The $413,000 estimate is an “extreme case,” the results explain. A couple would need to have “particularly high prescription drug expenditures” for that savings figure to adequately have a 90% chance of meeting health care spending needs during retirement.
The study also found that those enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans — private plans that “provide all of your Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) coverage” and that are separate from supplemental plans — have “generally lower savings targets” than those not enrolled in such plans.
“The results from EBRI’s projection model indicate that basic health care costs incurred by Medicare beneficiaries are high,” Spiegel added. “While the savings targets tend to be lower for Medicare Advantage enrollees relative to Medigap enrollees, there are important limitations to take into account.”
A recent survey found that nearly 25% of adults have no retirement plan besides Social Security, a benefit program that accounts for many older Americans’ primary source of cash flow in retirement. Social Security benefits rose in 2024 by 3.4%, but seniors continue to express concern over their ability to make ends meet.
Kaiser Permanente Medicare Advantage plans are available in only eight states and Washington, D.C., while Anthem-branded plans are available in 14 states. While Kaiser Permanente’s average star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are higher than those from Anthem, neither company is above the industry average. Member experience scores from CMS for both Kaiser Permanente and Anthem are lower than most major providers.

When we ran all of our numbers to figure out how much is $11 per hour is as annual salary, we used the average working day of 40 hours a week.
40 hours x 52 weeks x $11 = $22,880
$22,880 is the gross annual salary with a $11 per hour wage.
As of June 2023, the average hourly wage is $33.58 (source).
This you are making WAY LESS than the average wage.
Let’s breakdown how that number is calculated
Typically, the average work week is 40 hours and you can work 52 weeks a year. Take 40 hours times 52 weeks and that equals 2,080 working hours. Then, multiply the hourly salary of $11 times 2,080 working hours and the result is $22,880.
That number is the gross income before taxes, insurance, 401K, or anything else is taken out. Net income is how much you deposit into your bank account.
Work Part Time?
But you may think, oh wait, I’m only working part time. So if you’re working part time, the assumption is working 20 hours a week at $11 an hour.
Only 20 hours per week. Then, take 20 hours times 52 weeks and that equals 1,040 working hours. Then, multiply the hourly salary of $11 times 1,040 working hours and the result is $11,440.

On average, the monthly amount would average $1,907.

Since some months have more days and fewer days like February, you can expect months with more days to have a bigger paycheck. Also, this can be heavily influenced by how often you are paid on and on which days you get paid.

So, here are the scenarios for both cases.
For general purposes, we are going to assume you work 40 hours per week over the course of the year.
Case # 1 – With Paid Time Off
Most hourly employees get two weeks of paid time off, equivalent to 2 weeks of paid time off.
In this case, you would make $22,800 per year.
This is the same as the example above for annual salary making $11 per hour.
Case #2 – No Paid Time Off
Unfortunately, not all employers offer paid time off to their hourly employees. While that is unfortunate, it is best to plan for less income.
Life happens. There will be times you need to take time off for numerous reasons – sick time, handling an emergency, or even vacation.
So, let’s assume you take 2 weeks off without paid time off.
That means you would only work 50 weeks of the year instead of all 52 weeks. Take 40 hours times 50 weeks and that equals 2,000 working hours. Then, multiply the hourly salary of $11 times 2,000 working hours, and the result is $22,000.
40 hours x 50 weeks x $11 = $22,000
You would average $88 per working day and nothing when you don’t work.
$11 an Hour is How Much a year After Taxes
Let’s be honest… Taxes can take up a big chunk of your paycheck. Thus, you need to know how taxes can affect your hourly wage.
This is why you always wondering why your take-home pay is so much less.
Also, every single person’s tax situation is different.
On the basic level, let’s assume a 12% federal tax rate and a 4% state rate. Plus a percentage is taken out for Social Security and Medicare (FICA) of 7.65%.
Gross Annual Salary: $22,880
Federal Taxes of 12%: $2,746

While individual needs and health issues will primarily dictate how a person spends their final years, a new study shows that home-based care is a leading outcome for older Americans. This conclusion comes from a new study by researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Hospice News first reported the findings.
“The aim of this study was to determine the trajectories for place of care in each quarter during the last three years of life among Medicare beneficiaries and the factors associated with these trajectories,” the researchers explained. “A retrospective cohort was assembled from Medicare beneficiaries who died in 2018, and a 10% random sample of the cohort was analyzed.”
The final results were ultimately sorted into three predominant “clusters,” they explained, including home care, skilled home care and institutional care. The far-and-away preference for the sample was in some type of home-based care, according to the findings.
“Nationally, over half (59%) of Medicare beneficiaries were in the home cluster, one-quarter (27%) were in the skilled home care cluster, and the rest (14%) were in the institutional cluster,” the researchers said. “There were large variations by state in the use of services during the last three years of life.”
Home care without a skilled nursing element was most frequent among Medicare beneficiaries in Alaska (81.5%), Puerto Rico (81.4%), Hawaii (72.9%), Arizona (69.2%) and Oregon (68.9%). They were least frequent among beneficiaries from Massachusetts (47.1%), Louisiana (47.8%), Rhode Island (48.3%), and Connecticut (48.6%).
“Our findings are similar to those reported in a recent prospective cohort study using a representative sample from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), which also found that 58% of NHATS participants remained at home and 17% transitioned to or died in an institutional setting,” the Rutgers study found. “Our findings are also consistent with the recent downward trend of deaths in acute care hospitals and upward trend of deaths in home and community settings.”
Still, while the primary preference appears to be aging at home, more information is required to fully understand these preferences, the researchers concluded.
“While the majority of older adults spent their final years at home with minimal use of skilled home care or institutional care until the final months of life, 40% had major health service needs,” they said. “Extended use of skilled home care or institutional care was more frequent among older adults living with multiple chronic conditions, including dementia.”
Future research that aims to understand “the health care systems and policy factors that influence place of care trajectories” could help advance refinement of the care experience, health of the population and associated care costs, they added.
Aging-in-place preferences among older Americans are well documented, and the drivers of these preferences have also been subjects of recent discussion. Long-term care is also an increasingly large priority for older Americans.
The reverse mortgage industry often aims to position its product offerings as conducive to the goals of aging in place. The results of the Rutgers study may shed light on the broader considerations that lead older Americans to seek out certain end-of-life care paths, particularly as the U.S. population grows older more quickly.

It looks like nearly half the fiscal year could be over before Congress gets around to funding for it.
With under 36 hours left before the government was expected to shut down, Congress passed a continuing resolution to extend funding until March 1 and March 8, depending on the department that needs funding approval.
The move effectively kicks the can down the road for a deeply divided Congress to agree on spending levels for the fiscal year that began on Oct. 1. It’s the third stopgap in the government shutdown saga that began back in September.
The short-term bipartisan funding bill was introduced on Sunday and approved by the Senate and the House on Thursday. President Joe Biden is expected to sign it.
The stopgap is only a delay, and the government could still shut down come March. A government shutdown probably won’t greatly impact your day-to-day life unless you work for the federal government. But it could result in a slew of bothersome disruptions.
Key context
Congress must approve 12 key appropriations to fund federal agencies for each fiscal year. The 2023-24 fiscal year began on Oct. 1.
Two continuing resolutions made last year extended funding for the 2023-24 fiscal year. That means funding remained at 2022-23 levels and allowed federal agencies to continue operations.
The previous extension was set to expire on Jan. 19 for military and veterans programs, as well as the departments of Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Agriculture. Spending for energy and water development and related agencies also would have been affected. A second expiration date was set for Feb. 2 that included the State, Justice, Defense, Commerce and Labor departments, as well as Health and Human Services.
For a moment, it looked like Congress had come to a consensus on a spending bill with a $1.7 trillion bipartisan deal reached by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Mike Johnson last week. But its chances of passing soon crumbled when hardline House Republicans declared it dead on arrival.
Both deadlines have been extended to March 1 and March 8, respectively.

Congress has until March to finally agree on spending levels for the 2023-24 fiscal year.
Any funding agreement would likely include all 12 appropriations, as Schumer and Johnson’s proposed spending bill did last week.
What services could shut down?
The worst effects would be felt by government workers. Some would be furloughed without pay. Others would continue to work but would also go without pay for the duration of the shutdown. Everyone would receive back pay when funding is restored.
Certain nonessential services would be suspended. National park operations, the IRS’s customer service and Federal Student Aid assistance would close up shop.
What programs would continue?
Anything that receives mandatory funding would continue, such as law enforcement and power grid maintenance.
Air traffic control would continue, but you could experience some travel disruptions anyway.
What else could be disrupted?
Programs like Medicaid and Medicare, Social Security and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits would continue. But if a shutdown went on long enough, there could be delays in approvals and the delivery of certain benefits.
Homebuying could prove more difficult if you plan to get a reverse mortgage, Title I loan or a loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
What’s next?
Congress has until March 1 to get its act together.
Without a deal or another continuing resolution, you can expect a partial shutdown as soon as March 1 and, if no action is taken by March 8, there would be a full shutdown.
With the way this divided Congress is acting, it’s likely any future decisions — to fund or extend again — will be made under the gun.

A reverse mortgage can be a way to translate your home equity into cash, but, you guessed it: There are downsides along with the benefits. Whether or not to take out a reverse mortgage requires careful thought and research.
Here, you’ll learn the pros and cons to these loans, so you can decide if it’s the right move for you and your financial situation.
Reverse Mortgages 101
There are many different types of mortgages out there. Here are the basics of how reverse mortgages work.
• A reverse mortgage is a loan offered to people who are 62 or older and own their principal residence outright or have paid off a significant amount of their mortgage. You usually need to have at least 50% equity in your home, and typically can borrow up to 60% (or more, but not 100%) of the home’s appraised value.
• The lender uses your home as collateral in order to offer you the loan, although you retain the title. The loan and interest do not have to be repaid until the last surviving borrower moves out permanently or dies. A nonborrowing spouse may be able to remain in the home after the borrower moves into a health care facility for more than 12 consecutive months or dies.
• Here’s another aspect of how reverse mortgages work: Fees and interest on the loan mean that over time, the loan balance increases and home equity decreases.
• You may see reverse mortgages referred to as HECMs, which stands for Home Equity Conversion Mortgage. This is a popular, federally insured option.

Pros of Reverse Mortgages
A reverse mortgage offers older Americans the opportunity to turn what may be their largest asset — their home — into spendable cash. There are a variety of ways in which this can be attractive.
Securing Retirement
Many seniors find themselves with a fair amount of their net worth rolled up in their home but without many income streams. A reverse mortgage is a relatively accessible way to cover living expenses in retirement.
Paying Off the Existing Home Loan
While you have to have some of your home loan paid down in order to qualify for a reverse mortgage, any remaining mortgage balance is paid off with reverse mortgage proceeds. This, in turn, can free up more cash for other expenses.
No Need to Move
Those who take out reverse mortgages are allowed to remain in their homes and keep the title to their home the entire time. For established seniors who aren’t eager to pick up and move somewhere new — or downsize — to lower expenses, this feature can be a major benefit.
No Tax Liability
While most forms of retirement funding, like money from a traditional 401(k) or IRA, are considered income by the IRS, and are thus taxable, money you receive from a reverse mortgage is considered a loan advance, which means it’s not.
Heirs Have Options
Heirs can sell the home, buy the home, or turn the home over to the lender. If they choose to keep the home, under HECM rules, they will have to either repay the full loan balance or 95% of the home’s appraised value, whichever is less.
Thanks to FHA backing, if the home ends up being worth less than the remaining balance, heirs are not required to pay back the difference, though they’d lose the house unless they chose to pay off the reverse mortgage or refinance the home.

Cons of Reverse Mortgages
As attractive as all of that may sound, reverse mortgages carry risks, some of which are pretty serious.
Heirs Could Inherit a Loss
While heirs may not be forced to pay the shortfall of an upside-down reverse mortgage, inheriting a home in that scenario could come as an unpleasant surprise. Keeping a home in the family is an accessible way to build generational wealth and ensure that heirs have a home base for the future. Therefore, the potential for them to lose — or have to refinance — the house can be painful.
Losing Your Home to Foreclosure
Unfortunately, losing your house with a reverse mortgage is a possibility. You’ll still be required to pay property taxes, any HOA fees, homeowners insurance, and for all repairs, along with your regular living expenses, and if you can’t, even with the reverse mortgage proceeds, the house can go into foreclosure.
Reverse Mortgages Are Complicated
As you probably realize this far into an article explaining the pros and cons of reverse mortgages, these loans aren’t exactly simple. Even if you understand the basics, there may be caveats or exceptions written into the documentation.
Before applying for an HECM, you must meet with a counselor from a HUD-approved housing counseling agency. The counselor is required to explain the loan’s costs and options to an HECM, such as nonprofit programs, or a single-purpose reverse mortgage (whose proceeds fund a single, lender-approved purpose) or proprietary reverse mortgages (private loans, whose proceeds can be used for any purpose).
Impacts on Other Retirement Benefits
Although your reverse mortgage “income” stream isn’t taxable, it may affect Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income benefits, because those are needs-based programs. (Proceeds do not affect Social Security or Medicare, which are non-means-tested programs.)
Costs of Reverse Mortgages
Like just about every other loan product out there, reverse mortgages come at a cost. You’ll pay:
• A lender origination fee
• Closing costs
• An initial and annual mortgage insurance premium charged by your lender and paid to the FHA, guaranteeing that you will receive your expected loan advances.
These can be rolled into the loan, but doing so will lower the amount of money you’ll get in the reverse mortgage.
Reverse Mortgage Requirements
Not everyone is eligible to take out a reverse mortgage. While specific requirements vary by lender, generally speaking, you must meet the following:
• You must be 62 or older
• You must own your home outright (or have paid down a considerable amount of your primary mortgage)
• You must stay current on property expenses such as property taxes and homeowners insurance
• You must pass eligibility screening, including a credit check and other financial qualifications

Is a Reverse Mortgage Right for You?
While everyone interested in a reverse mortgage needs to weigh the pros and cons for themselves, there are some instances when this type of loan might work well for you:
• The value of your home has increased significantly over time. If you’ve built a lot of equity in your home, you probably have more wiggle room than others to take out a reverse mortgage and still have some equity left over for heirs.
• You don’t plan to move. With the costs associated with initiating a reverse mortgage, it probably doesn’t make sense to take one out if you plan to leave your home in the next few years.
• You’re able to comfortably afford the rest of your required living expenses. As discussed, if you fall delinquent on your homeowners insurance, flood insurance, HOA fees, or property taxes, you could lose your home to foreclosure under a reverse mortgage.
There are options to consider. They include a cash-out refinance, home equity loan, home equity line of credit, and downsizing to pocket some cash.
