An hour north of Atlanta, we find the small but vibrant community of Dahlonega. The site of the nation’s first major gold rush in 1829, this mountain getaway is nowadays best known for its countless local vineyards and picturesque views (and, possibly, for the many Hallmark movies that film here).
But Dahlonega is also home to some spectacular real estate, and a gated property currently on the market for $2,299,000 is the perfect example of what North Georgia’s wine country has to offer in terms of luxury living.
Built in 1999, the sprawling 8,480-square-foot residence has 6 bedrooms, 6 full baths, and 3 half baths spanning three finished — and luxuriously appointed — levels.
Listed with Marc Castillo (of Coldwell Banker Realty Atlanta), the elegant home has multiple entertaining areas that open onto porches overlooking the shoals of the Chestatee River, adding to the appeal of the property.
Formal areas in the home include a two-story dining room with seating for 12 and soaring ceilings punctuated by a mesmerizing $40,000 chandelier.
There are multiple primary suites throughout the 8,480-square-foot, many of them featuring sitting rooms, fireplaces, enormous walk-in closets, and spa baths with jetted tubs.
Per the listing, an expansive den over the garage is a fantastic flex space ideal for corporate functions, while the fully finished terrace level acts as the fun place in the house. This space features a bar, billiard room, two lower bedrooms, and marble floors throughout.
To help it stand out, the property’s exterior was reimagined with designer lime-washed brick, copper gutters, and industrial-style downspouts.
Next to the house, a hiking path leads down to a cabin and gazebo overlooking the rapids of the Chestatee River, allowing residents and guests to soak in the natural beauty.
Being set within a short drive to many of North Georgia’s wineries and a host of other eco attractions and event spaces, the Dahlonega house is an income-driving property, and has been operating as a turnkey short-term rental with solid income. It even has rentals on the books for most of the year, making it a solid potential investment opportunity.

There is a tremendous fascination with mysteries. Many cannot get enough of these types of stories, whether it be mysterious deaths, disappearances, or unexplained happenings. Anyone who listens to murder podcasts or watches Dateline understands.
That interest can also be in fictional mysteries, a genre that is one of my favorites. There is a multitude of tremendous mystery films to discover. An online forum discusses these types of movies and some of their fine qualities, such as an intelligent (and often attractive) main character and the compelling nature of solving the case or problem in the story.
1. Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
One of Agatha Christie’s greatest stories featuring the brilliant and intrepid detective Hercule Poirot gets the remake treatment in this 2017 film from star/director Kenneth Branagh. Aboard the glamorous Orient Express, which travels through the snowy mountains of Europe, a man is murdered in his cabin during the night.
1. Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Poirot takes it upon himself to solve the crime with challenging clues, suspects, and misdirection at every turn. This film is well-acted and directed, with a genuinely surprising and unexpected resolution to the mystery.
2. Clue (1985)
The family board game featuring characters Colonel Mustard and Professor Plum seems like something other than apt source material for a cla-ic movie. And yet Clue works so well because it features the game’s basic mystery tropes and elements and adds a healthy dose of zaniness.
2. Clue (1985)
In this story, a group of individuals receives invitations to a grand mansion on a stormy evening, utterly unaware that their host, Mr. Body, holds incriminating secrets over each of them. When Mr. Body meets an untimely demise, they find themselves entangled in a comical quest to unravel the mystery of his death. This hilarious film promises plenty of laughs along the way.
Clue is unique in that, much like the game, there are many possible suspects, murder weapons, and locations in the house. Multiple endings were filmed, and you can choose to watch a single conclusion or all the various ones. It’s raucous fun.
3. Rear Window (1954)
Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, which stars James Stewart and Grace Kelly, is one of the most unique and riveting mysteries ever. And that is because it takes place in one small location with the mystery playing out right in front of the characters.
3. Rear Window (1954)
The movie follows a photographer named Jeff, who has a broken leg and uses a wheelchair until it heals. With little to do to pa- the time, Jeff spends his days looking out his rear window at the courtyard and apartments across from his.
Upon witnessing his neighbor’s peculiar behavior, he begins to suspect that the man may have killed his wife. Before long, Jeff’s girlfriend, Lisa, and housekeeper, Stella, also become convinced of this unsettling possibility. As they unite to uncover the truth, the unfolding events on-screen deliver some of the most heart-pounding and suspenseful moments ever captured.
4. Knives Out: A Gla- Onion Mystery (2022)
The sequel to the original Knives Out movie by writer/director Rian Johnson once again features detective Benoit Blanc and his unique demeanor and deductive skills on full display. Blanc is invited to join in a weekend at the private estate of a tech billionaire, along with a group of their steadfast friends.
4. Knives Out: A Gla- Onion Mystery (2022)
They may or may not all be terrible people, as multiple crimes must be solved, and the truth is very complicated. This film’s plot is even more mysterious than the first, with surprising twists and an exceptionally entertaining cast.
5. Sherlock Holmes (2009)
One of the best depictions of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s cla-ic detective Sherlock Holmes is this Guy Richie-directed gem that stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. The movie has a gorgeous moody atmosphere and stylish direction, with Downey and Law proving formidable on-screen.
5. Sherlock Holmes (2009)
The film’s riveting mystery involves a sadistic man named Lord Blackwood, his unexplained return from the grave, and a plot against the British parliament. Holmes and Watson are thrust into this dark plot, and it plays out with fun, tension, and excitement.
6. Death on the Nile (2022)
Kenneth Branagh’s second turn at the Hercule Poirot character is just as entertaining and captivating. This story follows a group of friends and family aboard a small steamboat to celebrate a wedding. The awkward moment is when the groom’s former love arrives with the intent to spoil the fun.
6. Death on the Nile (2022)
When the bride ends up murdered, the suspect feels obvious. But things are not what they seem, making this one of the most mind-boggling cases for Poirot. Chances are, the audience will also be guessing until the end.
7. The Fugitive (1993)
The Fugitive may not be the most obvious choice when considering mystery films, but it certainly counts. Harrison Ford stars as Dr. Richard Kimble, a man falsely accused and convicted of murdering his wife. When an accident allows him to escape, Kimble goes on the run, determined to find the real culprit, while a curt U.S. Marshall relentlessly pursues him.
7. The Fugitive (1993)
The Fugitive is a fantastic thriller, but the mystery of who killed Kimble’s wife is just as compelling. Led by Ford’s exceptional performance, the audience is rooting for him as the truth unfolds.
8. Enola Holmes (2020)
The Sherlock Holmes story gets a fresh new take on the characters with Enola Holmes, Sherlock’s feisty and equally brilliant younger sister. Enola is reaching the age where society, and her brothers, expect her to “act like a proper young lady.” But Enola has no desire to do so, having been raised by her mother, who taught fencing and martial arts alongside literature and history.
8. Enola Holmes (2020)
Enola sets out to find her when her mother mysteriously disappears and stumbles upon an a-a-ination plot targeting a young Duke. This film is fantastic, especially the fun, tongue-in-cheek way Enola breaks the fourth wall and talks directly to the audience. And it’s great fun watching the two mysteries unfold and begin to intertwine.
9. The Forgotten (2004)
The mystery of The Forgotten is a chilling one. The film’s protagonist, played by Julianne Moore, is a mother grieving the loss of her son, who, along with a group of other children, inexplicably vanished on a flight. She is not giving up hope. But one day, her world changes when everyone around her denies her son exists.
9. The Forgotten (2004)
Her tireless effort to discover the truth and find her son makes for a thrilling but poignant film showcasing the depth of a mother’s love. The ending is wild but wholly satisfying.
10. Unknown (2011)
If you are looking for a different kind of mystery with an exceptional leading man, Unknown is the way to go. Liam Neeson had carved out a niche in the film industry with action thrillers. Unknown is one of the greatest because it offers not just action but also entirely unexpected twists.
10. Unknown (2011)
The mystery laid before Neeson is one of identity. After a car accident leaves him in a coma, he wakes to find another man claiming to be him. However, his wife, nor anyone else, seems to know him. As he attempts to regain his identity, the race is on to thwart an even more sinister plot. This layered and engrossing film is a must-see for mystery fans.

We’ve all heard the famous adage that “no publicity is bad publicity,” and while it tends to be accurate, there are certainly exceptions. But what about those few stars who stay out of the limelight and get along without a hint of trouble?

These 10 Activities Are an Immediate Red Flag
We’ve all been there – sitting through a movie that we can’t help but cringe at, but somehow it still manages to hold a special place in our hearts.
These 10 Terrible Movies Are Still People’s Favorites
For years, developers have considered downsizing to be an old man’s game. Downsizing, it was assumed, fit the budgets of retirees with empty nests.
Then came the tiny house movement and with it a whole group of young people devoted to downsizing. Now, people across age groups are attempting to spend less on property to free up cash for recreation, travel, or investment. Why not minimize housing costs and maximize fun?
But when a building trend receives no less than three shows on HGTV, you know the real estate community has achieved peak hysteria. Sure, downsizing has become a young person’s game, but when is it actually right for you? These experiments in small living can often go awry. One tiny house builder ended up spending $220,000 to build a 500ft2 cabin in Colorado—that’s $440 for every square foot of her small cabin!
Downsizing Is Ultimately A Cost-Cutting Move
The lessons of tiny house hysteria perfectly apply to the situation of an average downsizer; it is important to manage expectations and prices. Unless you have decided to move to a radically more expensive neighborhood, the price of your new home should cost a fraction of your previous one.
The goal here is to free up cash. Especially during retirement, this extra money can be critical for quality-of-life improvements.
According to the Center for Retirement Research, downsizing can lead to major financial gains. Home equity is your largest store of wealth while, paradoxically, home ownership is often your biggest single expense.
Researchers at the center hypothesized that downsizing from a house that costs $250,000 to one that costs $150,000 could increase yearly income by $3,000 and reduce annual expenses by $3,250. Overall, the household expenses of the downsized home are half those of the costlier one, from $8,125 to $4,875.
Who Is Downsizing, Why, and How
For the older crowd, downsizing is still an alluring concept. Who needs 4 bedrooms once the kids have all moved out? Who needs to climb multiple sets of stairs when their knees start to go?
In these cases, smaller homes carry the added bonus of being a health and sanity booster. Homes adapted to older communities eliminate the stairs and provide single-floor living spaces, wide hallways, and outlets accessible at any height. For a vastly reduced price, you can get a livable, affordable new home with minimal upkeep.
Others choose to downsize for environmental reasons. A larger house leaves a noticeably larger carbon footprint on the world. In contrast, smaller homes require less energy and have the ability to run self-sufficiently if supplied with solar panels and other green devices.
If you plan on staying in a large home, fortunately there are some green energy solutions that can help minimize your costs, but the fact remains that smaller homes are a vastly more sustainable option.
A Final Word on Financing Your Downsize
If you are seriously considering a downsize, it would be advantageous to get the equity back on your home first. Experts suggest that you close on the new purchase after closing on the current home’s sale. Once you have secured the funding, it’s time to go ahead and purchase that dream home—tiny, small, and anything in between.

Spirit Airlines Safety Record
Maintaining an exceptional safety record is vital to any airline, and Spirit Airlines is no exception. Their commitment to passenger safety is reflected in their pre-flight safety briefings, proactive lines of communication, and strategic safety initiatives. IATA’s assertion that ranking an airline’s safety based on customer reviews is flawed reinforces the credibility of Spirit Airlines.
We delve deep into the safety record of Spirit Airlines, shedding light on their dedication to passenger safety, and the successful strategies they have implemented. A key point here is the absence of significant safety incidents within the past decade.
1. Airline Safety Rating
Safety ratings reflect an airline’s safety record and compliance with aviation standards – they’re pretty crucial when choosing who to fly with.
For Spirit Airlines, the rating is impressively high!
Certification: Spirit holds an Air Operator Certificate from the FAA (source).
Safety record: Even though they’ve had a few emergency landings, Spirit has had no fatal accidents in its history (source).
Remember, though, safety isn’t the entire story. Where Spirit excels in safety, the experience is defined by customer satisfaction and services.
2. Safety of the Spirit Airlines Fleet
The Spirit Airlines fleet is composed completely of Airbus aircraft, with the Airbus A319, A320, and A321 among them.
Modern and reliable, the average age of the aircraft Spirit utilizes is merely six years old with their 200th plane just delivered. This relatively youthful fleet is one reason why Spirit is counted among the top 20 safest low cost airlines worldwide.
Additionally, Spirit Airlines is constantly investing in new technology to augment the safety and efficiency of its aircraft. This commitment to safety and innovation is proven through regular inspections, diligent maintenance, and strict adherence to the manufacturer-recommended service schedules.
3. Flight Safety Protocols
Spirit Airlines, a certified member of IATA, takes passenger safety quite seriously despite its low-cost status.
Here are some of the key safety protocols they follow:
The Spirit team is trained for various emergency situations, including necessary medical measures.
For urgent support, passengers can reach out to an agent using the free mobile app developed by Spirit Airlines. This assures on-the-go assistance.
In adherence to FAA rules, Spirit Airlines provides each passenger with a life vest stowed under the seat or between armrests.
Prior to each flight, passengers are made aware of vital safety instructions through pre-flight briefings such as proper usage of safety equipment and emergency actions.
In-flight safety cards are utilized as visual aids to facilitate a better understanding of these safety guidelines.
Spirit Airlines encourages passengers to report potential safety issues for a quick resolution.
Thus, flying with Spirit Airlines is indeed quite safe.
Note that Spirit Airlines operates under stringent rules set by leading regulatory bodies such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
4. Safety Training of the Crew
When it comes to air travel, safety is king! One crucial aspect is the training of flight crews.
As such, Spirit has a rigorous training program for pilots and cabin crew. Their focus? Emergency procedures, handling tricky weather, and managing complex flight situations.
Let’s see how Spirit Airlines ensures its crew is well-prepared for any scenario:
Regular simulator training keeps the pilot’s skills sharp. Flying virtual skies means quicker, smarter decisions in the real world.
Spirit doesn’t just hire anyone. They’ve got strict criteria, ensuring only qualified, experienced folks join the team.
Continuous evaluations keep the crew’s performance top-notch. Spirit never stops improving its safety standards.
Onboard safety protocols. Crew members undergo safety classes, learning how to respond during emergencies.
Real-life simulated scenarios are part of the training. Fires, water landings, you name it. Spirit’s crew is ready for action!
That’s Spirit Airlines – keeping you secure, one flight at a time!
5. Pilot Qualifications
Pilot qualifications at Spirit Airlines are stringent to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
Each pilot is required to have a minimum total of 1500 hours in fixed-wing aircraft, however, they prefer 2500 hours. They must possess a current FAA First Class Medical Certificate, an unrestricted Airline Transport Pilot License, and an FCC Radio Telephone Operator Permit. This consolidates their hands-on expertise, their medical fitness for flight duties, and their understanding of complex flight communications.
This rigorous screening guarantees that passengers are in the hands of highly skilled professionals capable of managing various flight scenarios.
Also, the good news, they have increased their pilot pay, which attracts higher-quality candidates!
6. Emergency Landing Procedures
Emergency landing procedures are rigorously implemented and followed to ensure the safety and well-being of Spirit passengers.
In the event of an unforeseen complication or hazard, such as equipment failure, bird strikes, or detection of smoke or unknown odors on the aircraft, an emergency landing may be necessitated. Emergency landings can also happen due to severe weather turbulence that can potentially lead to risks during a flight.
Spirit Airlines has a commendable safety record, often resorting to these emergency landings as a safety measure to keep the passengers safe.
Despite having to make a few emergency landings over the past thirty years, it is noteworthy that Spirit has not faced any fatal accidents or crashes during this period.
7. Safety Checks of the Airplanes
Safety checks are the lifeline of any airline industry, making sure your travel from point A to B is as safe as can be.
When you’re traveling with Spirit Airlines, these safety measures are taken to a whole new level.
First and foremost, seasoned mechanics inspect the Spirit aircraft from top to bottom. They check every little component – inspecting engine performance to the seat pitch, ensuring everything functions as it is supposed to.
Moreover, they keep a keen eye on the boarding processes, ensuring the necessity and safety protocols are met to precision. These inspections are not just occasional but happen on-ground prior to every takeoff. This allows any issues spotted during preflight checks to be rectified before the plane leaves the ground.
No stone is left unturned when it comes to the training of Spirit’s staff. The staff undergoes intensive training sessions to equip them with the aptitude to handle unexpected in-flight situations promptly and efficiently. It’s the people behind the scenes who add to your safety during a flight after all.
Remember, when flying Spirit, your safety isn’t just a priority, it’s their mission.
My Experience Flying Spirit Airlines
Flying with Spirit Airlines may be a basic experience, but it’s honestly not all bad. It’s an unpretentious, no-frills airline that delivers exactly what you’re paying for–a cost-effective flight.
Personally, I don’t get why Spirit gets a bad rap because every flight I have taken with Spirit Airlines has always been a good experience.
The cleanliness and modern simplicity of the newly operated Airbus are clean, but the seats remind you of any lack of luxury. Punctuality was another impressive aspect, as both my flights arrived right on schedule, if not a bit earlier.
Many people complain about the absence of an in-flight entertainment system, but it doesn’t affect me as my kids and I were well-prepared with my personal entertainment on my phone and a book as a constant companion – one of my many travel essentials.
Most importantly, Spirit Airlines offers the advantage of budget travel, making it possible to explore more without a steep dent in the wallet.
Personally, I never pay for the extras like seat assignments and carry-on items, so being aware and planning ahead saves you from any surprises.
More often than not, I will purchase the Savers Club as the price to join lowers the airline ticket cost by more than the membership.
Also, I love that Spirit Airlines flies into the newer and much larger terminal at San Diego International Airport!

Why is Spirit so cheap?
Why is Spirit Airlines so cheap, you ask? The answer lies in their unique business strategy.
Non-ticket revenue: They adopt a budget-friendly strategy by charging extra for add-ons like seat selection, carry-on bags, and in-flight food and beverages. According to their 2022 financial reports, over half of Spirit’s total revenue per passenger comes from these non-ticket avenues.
Streamlined fleet: Unlike other airlines operating different types of aircraft, Spirit keeps it simple with just one family of aircraft – the Airbus. This significantly cuts down on training and supply chain expenses.
Save on Baggage: You can easily skip checking a bag if you pack everything in your carry-on. Or invest in my favorite seven-pound luggage to save on checked baggage fees!

Use avios.com to transfer Avios from either British Airlines or Iberia to Aer Lingus. If you need to transfer Avios from Qatar, use British Airways as an intermediary first and then follow the next step to transfer them to Aer Lingus.
What are Aer Lingus Avios worth?
NerdWallet values British Airways Avios to be worth 0.8 cent each. Because Avios can be transferred from British Airways to Aer Lingus, we’ll say that they’re worth the same. Keep this in mind and use it as a target value when redeeming AerClub Avios for flights.
How to redeem Aer Lingus Avios for maximum value
You can redeem Aer Lingus Avios for awards on Aer Lingus, British Airways and Iberia only, so you don’t have many options to maximize the value. However, you still can get a decent deal redeeming Avios for award flights.
To redeem AerClub Avios, you have to log in on avios.com with your Aer Lingus credentials. The redemption rates depend on the distance you fly, the season and the class of service.
U.S. East Coast to Ireland on off-peak dates
One of the best Avios redemptions through Aer Lingus is for award flights between the East Coast of the United States and Ireland during off-peak season. The one-way mileage rate is just 13,000 Avios in economy class and 50,000 Avios in business class. You’ll pay $116 to $138 in taxes, but it’s still a great deal.
Ireland routes in the East Coast travel zone include:
Cleveland.
Minneapolis.
Philadelphia.
Washington.
U.S. East Coast to Europe on off-peak dates
If Ireland isn’t your destination, you can connect to other European cities that Aer Lingus flies to for an additional 4,000 Avios. So, you’ll redeem 17,000 Avios for an Aer Lingus economy flight anywhere in Europe on off-peak dates.
U.S. West Coast to Ireland on off-peak dates
West Coast residents can take advantage of some great redemption rates on routes to and from Ireland. A one-way economy flight is going to cost you 16,250 Avios, and a business class flight will cost 62,500 Avios.
Ireland routes in the West Coast travel zone include:
Los Angeles.
San Francisco.
Aer Lingus AerClub, the elite status program
Status levels and benefits
Launched in 2016, AerClub is quite a newcomer to the airline loyalty program scene. It has four membership levels: Green, Silver, Platinum and Concierge. If you sign up for the AerClub program, you automatically become a Green member, so technically there are three elite tiers.
Depending on your elite level, benefits include priority check-in and boarding, lounge access, complimentary bags, complimentary upgrades, free Wi-Fi and waived change fees.
How to earn Aer Lingus elite status
Achieving elite status in the AerClub program requires earning Tier Credits, which are awarded based on your route and fare type. The more Tier Credits you earn within a qualification period, the more you progress in the elite levels. Keep in mind that only Aer Lingus ticketed and operated flights earn Tier Credits.
The qualification period is based on when you join AerClub, so make sure to remember the date you signed up as a member. The Tier Credits reset to zero annually on your anniversary date.
European flights earn a different number of Tier Credits than transatlantic flights ticketed and operated by Aer Lingus.
Here’s how many Tier Credits you’ll earn on flights within Europe:
And here’s how many Tier Credits you’ll earn on transatlantic flights:
Keep in mind that the earning rates will change for travel after Oct. 1, 2023.
Aer Lingus AerClub recapped
As a relatively new airline loyalty program, AerClub still has a long way to go. Members can redeem Aer Lingus Avios for award flights on Aer Lingus or its partners. The option to transfer Avios to British Airways, Iberia and Qatar also greatly expands their use.

How to maximize your rewards
You want a travel credit card that prioritizes what’s important to you. Here are our picks for the best travel credit cards of 2023, including those best for:
Although best known for being one of the largest airlines in the world, American Airlines also boasts one of the oldest airline mileage programs ever created.
The AAdvantage program has changed significantly since being launched in 1981. However, it remains one of the most rewarding mileage programs around.
Curious about the best way to use your AA miles? Let’s first recap how the American Airlines mileage program works and then highlight some of the best uses of AA miles.
Basics of American Airlines AAdvantage miles
American Airlines stands out from its competition in still publishing some sort of award mileage chart.
For award flights on American Airlines, the airline now only lists a starting price with no upper bound on just how high the award price could go.
However, American Airlines publishes a fixed award chart for award flights on partners. Award rates vary based on the region you’re departing from, the region you’re flying to, the class of service you’re booking and sometimes even the partner you’re flying on.
Flight distance doesn’t play a factor in award pricing.
Unlike Delta SkyMiles and — to a lesser extent — United MileagePlus, American Airlines awards aren’t as closely tied to the cash price of a flight. That means you can still find outsized value on American Airlines flights.
However, due to its predictable pricing, partner award flights are generally the best use of American Airlines miles. Let’s take a look at some of the best uses of your AA miles.
Best American Airlines Sweet Spots
1. Domestic American Airlines awards from 6,000 miles
The American Airlines award chart now shows one-way domestic awards starting at 7,500 miles in economy or 15,000 miles in business class. However, in practice, American Airlines still prices domestic economy awards as cheap as 6,000 miles each way.
And these bargain-basement rates aren’t just limited to short flights. For example, you can fly from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, across the country to Burbank, California for just 6,000 miles.
If you booked the same flight using cash, you’d need to pay $295 for a standard economy flight — the most comparable cash fare to award tickets. That means you’re getting almost 5 cents per mile from this mileage redemption. That’s more than three times NerdWallet’s valuation of 1.5 cents per AAdvantage mile.
2. American Airlines awards to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America
American Airlines awards to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America now start at just 10,000 AAdvantage miles each way in economy or 20,000 miles in business class. That’s an excellent price for flights that can cost hundreds of dollars.
These award rates aren’t available during peak travel times. However, travelers with a flexible travel schedule may find pretty widespread pricing at this rate.
3. Off-peak and low-season awards to Europe
American Airlines no longer publishes an off-peak award chart for its own flights. However, you can still book off-peak awards to Europe on partners for 22,500 miles each way.
Even better, you can currently book awards on American Airlines between the U.S. and Europe for 42,000 miles round-trip. Note that you’ll need to book a round-trip to get this rate. American Airlines charges 25,000 miles each way if you book two one-way flights.
4. Award flights to Morocco — or beyond into Europe
If you used American Airlines’ award chart as a reference, you might fail a geography test. That’s because American Airlines treats Morocco as a part of Europe. That’s a good thing for travelers as it means you can fly to Morocco for as few as 22,500 miles in economy or 57,500 miles in business class.
Comparatively, awards to Africa cost 40,000 miles in economy or 75,000 miles in business class. Unfortunately, that’s the price you’ll get stuck paying if you connect onward from Casablanca into other parts of Africa — even on a short onward flight to Tunis, Tunisia.
Treating Morocco as part of Europe means that you can also connect through Casablanca on the way to “other” European destinations for no additional mileage cost. This gives American Airlines travelers another way to fly across the Atlantic without paying high taxes and fees on British Airways.
5. Qatar Qsuite to the Maldives or other parts of the Indian Subcontinent
Qatar Qsuite is widely regarded as one of the best business class products in the world. And one of the least-expensive ways to experience it for yourself is by booking with American Airlines miles.
Nonstop flights from the U.S. to Doha, Qatar cost 40,000 miles in economy or 70,000 miles in Qatar Qsuite business class. Even better, you can connect onward to destinations throughout the Middle East or Indian Subcontinent for no additional miles.
You can stretch this award price to its limits by flying to India, Nepal, Sri Lanka or even the Maldives.
6. Flying Japan Airlines to Japan or Korea
Lastly, we would be remiss not to discuss American Airlines’ partnership with Japan Airlines. AAdvantage members can book travel on Japan Airlines between the U.S. and Japan at the following rates:
35,000 miles each way in economy.
50,000 miles each way in premium economy.
60,000 miles each way in business class.
80,000 miles each way in first class.
Japan Airlines provides a top-notch experience in all cabins, making any of these four options potentially a good deal. Business and first class especially stand out as amazing opportunities for using AA miles.
With that said, premium cabin award availability can be especially hard to find between the U.S. and Japan. On dates where there is any award availability, you’ll often find just one seat available.
Earning AAdvantage Miles
American Airlines offers dozens of ways to earn AAdvantage miles. At last count, we found 32 ways — including:
Flying on American Airlines or its partners.
Booking hotels through AAdvantage partners.
Spending on an AAdvantage credit card.
Shopping through the eShopping portal.
Earning through saving with Bask Bank, and so many more.
One of the biggest limitations of the American Airlines AAdvantage program is its lack of transfer partners.
Of the five major transfer point programs, American Airlines only partners with Marriott Bonvoy. You’ll get one AAdvantage mile for every three Marriott Bonvoy points transferred.
If you’re looking for the best use of AA miles
American Airlines offers a diverse range of ways to use AAdvantage miles for good value — from 6,000-mile domestic awards to flying some of the best business- and first-class products in the world for a reasonable mileage rate.
The best use of AA miles just depends on where you want to go.

You want a travel credit card that prioritizes what’s important to you. Here are our picks for the best travel credit cards of 2023, including those best for:
Disney has a massive global footprint across its theme parks, films and merchandise. And it doesn’t stop there. Among its many offerings is the Disney Cruise Line, whose fleet of five ships sails all over the world.
Family-friendly but with adults-only areas, Disney cruises offer some of the most comprehensive cruise options around. Let’s break down everything there is to know about the Disney Cruise Line, including pricing, destinations and its loyalty program.
About Disney Cruise Line cruises
You can always expect some magic from Disney, and there is no exception when sailing on Disney Cruise Line. Although its fleet is small, it offers a high-end, family-friendly experience for guests. Here’s a quick overview of Disney Cruise Line’s key features.
Cabin types: Disney Cruise Line offers all the usual cabin types, including inside, oceanview, verandah and concierge-level rooms. Disney Cruise Line’s cabins are larger than average and designed for families, with split bathrooms and privacy curtains. Their largest rooms can accommodate up to seven guests.
Main U.S. routes: Disney has several departure points from within the United States, including options from San Diego, New York City, Miami, and Galveston, Texas. However, its most frequent departures are fromPort Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida, to the Bahamas and the Caribbean or from Vancouver, British Columbia to Alaska.
Loyalty program: Disney Cruise Line offers the Castaway Club to repeat guests. It has four membership levels — Silver, Gold, Platinum and Pearl. The first level is earned by completing a single cruise.
Disney Cruise Line destinations
Although Disney currently operates only five ships, the cruise line still manages to cover most of the world. Here are the locations you can currently sail on a Disney cruise:
Disney cruise destinations
Australia.
Caribbean.
New Zealand.
Pacific Coast.
Panama Canal.
South Pacific.
Transatlantic.
Cruises are available in a variety of lengths, from three nights up to 15 nights.
Disney Cruise Line prices
Disney cruises tend to be more expensive than the average cruise. Currently, for example, the cheapest cruise departing from Port Canaveral is a three-night trip to the Bahamas, which costs $1,958 for two guests.
And you’ll pay more to take a “special occasion” Disney cruise. The same three-night Bahamas cruise sailing during Disney’s Silver Anniversary at Sea starts at $2,345 for two guests.
When it comes to timing, standard logic applies. The high season will cost more, especially during holidays and the summer break.
The cheapest rate we found — the previously-mentioned $1,958 — is for a cruise in late January, a time when those with school-aged children might have trouble getting away. Meanwhile, the most expensive period for this cruise takes place over the Christmas holiday and rings in at $3,737 for an inside stateroom.
For all destinations, if you’d like to save money, avoid peak periods and search all available dates to find the lowest rates. This is true even on less popular cruises, such as those sailing up to Alaska.
The cheapest cost for two guests to Alaska from Vancouver is $2,983 in mid-September, while the same cruise will cost you $4,607 if you sail over the Fourth of July holiday.
🤓Nerdy Tip
One-way positioning cruises — that is, those that end in a different location from where they started — are often much cheaper per night than standard round-trip cruises.
What’s included
Disney cruises are more inclusive than most cruises. You don’t, for example, need to pay extra for soft drinks on a Disney cruise like you would on Norwegian Cruise Line. You’re also entitled to complimentary room service 24/7, unlike on Virgin Voyages, where you’ll be charged a $5 fee for each delivery.
Here are more inclusions you can expect.
Live, high-quality entertainment.
Large staterooms (designed for parties of up to three guests).
Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay (on most Bahamas and Caribbean cruises).
Upscale restaurants, quick-service dining, poolside snacks and room service.
Adults-only lounges and pool areas.
Waterslides (on some ships).
Disney Cruise Line loyalty program: Castaway Club
Disney isn’t known for its loyalty programs. For example, there is no frequent traveler program associated with staying at one of its resorts or frequenting its parks. However, Disney Cruise Line rewards repeat customers with various benefits, including a complimentary specialty dinner, free photo downloads and an exclusive terminal check-in area.
Castaway Club levels
The Castaway Club levels are Silver, Gold, Platinum and Pearl.
Silver
How to earn: Sail on one cruise.

What is the best Disney Cruise Line ship?
The Disney Wish is the newest Disney Cruise Line ship and certainly its best. It just launched in the summer of 2022. Among its many amenities, guests can find the first-ever Disney attraction at sea. It’s a 760-foot water slide filled with show scenes, lighting, music and more that touches down into a lazy river.
The Disney Wish also has dedicated areas themed for “Frozen,” the Marvel Universe and “Star Wars.”
In addition, the Disney Wish has all the regular amenities you’d expect on a Disney cruise, including live entertainment, pools and spacious staterooms.
Frequently asked questions
Does Disney Cruise Line have free Wi-Fi?
Disney Cruise Line does not offer free Wi-Fi. Instead, it has three levels of packages from which to choose:
Stay Connected: $10 per day for the entire cruise or $12 per day for a 24-hour period.
Basic Surf: $20 per day for the entire cruise or $24 per day for a 24-hour period.
Premium Surf: $30 per day for the entire cruise or $36 per day for a 24-hour period.
These packages are available on the Disney Wish, Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream. The Disney Wonder still operates on the old data-usage Wi-Fi packages.
Is Disney Cruise Line all-inclusive?
Most of your daily expenses, including your food and non-alcoholic beverages, are included when sailing on a Disney cruise. However, if you’d like specialty drinks or alcohol, you’ll need to pay extra. Gratuities are not included, and Disney Cruise Line’s recommended tip is a minimum of $14.50 per guest, per night.
How much is the Disney Cruise Line drink package?
Disney Cruise Line doesn’t offer the standard drink package other cruise lines offer. Drink packages allow you to pay a flat-rate price and drink as much alcohol as you’d like.
Instead, you’ll either pay per drink or purchase bundled quantities onboard. It’s also possible to purchase a specialty beer mug at the pub onboard, which can then be refilled across the ship. Much like Disney’s popcorn buckets, your beer mugs entitle you to cheaper refills on all your beer.
Does Disney Cruise Line require COVID-19 vaccine or test?
In the past, Disney Cruise Line required that you be vaccinated or tested for COVID-19 before sailing, but this is no longer the case. Guests departing from the United States are not required to do either, though the cruise line highly encourages you to get vaccinated before sailing.

Silversea is a leader in the luxury, small-ship cruising market. These cruises typically appeal to the high-end traveler looking for personalized service, upscale dining and accommodations, access to smaller ports and a top-notch vacation experience.
If you’re in the market for a high-end cruise vacation, here’s everything you need to know about Silversea.
About Silversea
You won’t find waterslides, kids clubs or roller coasters on a Silversea cruise.
Instead, expect an elevated experience designed for those looking for a relaxing yet entertaining sailing. Here are a few key features of Silversea cruises:
Accommodations
Every one of Silversea’s cabins has an ocean view, and they’re all designated as suites with a high space-to-guest ratio. For guests’ needs throughout the cruise, butler service is available in every room.
Some suites are more luxurious — smaller suites only have windows overlooking the ocean, while classic veranda suites and many others come with a balcony.
Some room categories, such as the ultra-luxurious Otium Suite, are exclusive to Silversea’s newest ship, Silver Nova. Others are found across the fleet, although accommodations on board each vessel may differ slightly.
All-inclusive sailings
Many cruise lines charge their passengers a base fare for the trip, allowing them to choose various add-ons — such as beverages, specialty restaurants, internet access and port excursions — for an additional cost.
Silversea does away with this. It advertises an all-inclusive cruise package, which includes everything from shore excursions and alcoholic drinks to butler service and gratuities.
Primary U.S. ports
Silversea ships span the globe, but travelers that don’t want to venture too far from home will find many cruises departing from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Trips also depart from New York City for destinations in Canada.
Those wishing to depart from the West Coast can set sail from San Francisco or Los Angeles. Ships from these ports travel to the Caribbean, Alaska, Canada and other far-flung destinations.
Where does Silversea sail?
Silversea’s destination map is extensive, with over 900 ports on all seven continents. Sailings are at least six days long, but trips can last several weeks to a month or more.
For those with the time and the money, Silversea offers World Cruises that travel from continent to continent in a global adventure that can take as many as 140 days.
How much does a Silversea cruise cost?
Silversea sailings are no discount venture, but the all-inclusive nature of each cruise adds value.
Meals, drinks, entertainment and onboard special events are all part of the price. The rates vary based on demand, destination and time of year.
There are two types of prices: “door-to-door,” which includes airport transfers and airfare, or “port-to-port,” which is the cruise fare without any transportation to or from the port.
Rates can vary from as low as $2,800 for a seven-day trip from Colombia to Florida to $94,700 for a 125-day expedition cruise from Chile to Norway.
Silversea also offers special fares for single travelers on select excursions, which provides a discount instead of paying the full cost of a double-occupancy cabin.
What is the best Silversea ship?
There are 13 ships in the Silversea fleet — with more scheduled for delivery in the coming years — ranging in size from 51 to 364 cabins. The best ship, however, will depend on the type of sailing you want.
The smallest ships are typically expedition ships that sail itineraries like the Galapagos or Antarctica. For example, the 100-passenger Silver Origin was Silversea’s first purpose-built destination ship, built explicitly for cruising in the Galapagos. It is also the most environmentally-friendly ship built by Silversea.
Another small ship is the Silver Explorer, with a capacity for 144 guests and a strengthened hull to sail in Antarctica and the Arctic safely.
On the other end of the spectrum, you have larger ships such as Silver Spirit, which was renovated in 2018. With space for 608 passengers, it spends much of its time sailing around Europe, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.
Ships like Silver Spirit look more like cruise ships, with amenities that include larger pools, lounges and plentiful dining options. Expedition ships are smaller by nature and therefore have fewer onboard facilities.
The best Silversea ship depends on the type of traveler you are, the destinations you want to visit, and the amenities you desire.
What is the newest Silversea ship?
Silver Nova is Silversea’s newest ship, with plans to set sail later this summer. It will also be the largest ship in the Silversea fleet, with space for 728 passengers. Coming in 2024 is a second ship of the same size, the Silver Ray.
These ships feature a new asymmetrical design that gives their interiors a more spacious feel. Additionally, they’ll have the largest pools in the Silversea fleet, and every suite will have a balcony.
What’s included in a Silversea cruise
As mentioned above, Silversea advertises its cruises as all-inclusive, and compared to many cruise lines, this is pretty accurate. Here’s what’s included with all Silversea cruises:
24-hour butler service.
Complimentary beverages, including alcohol, around the ship and in minibars.
Gourmet meals, including room service and specialty restaurants.
Gratuities.
Select shore excursions.
Wi-Fi access.
Onboard lectures and entertainment.
Passengers who opt for the door-to-door all-inclusive option will also receive the following:
Private transfers to and from their home airport.
Airfare to and from the port city, including international flights.
Transfers between the ship and the airport.
Overnight hotel stays in the port city on arrival or before returning home, if needed.
A few items are not included in the fare and will incur an additional cost:
Meals or accommodations while on shore.
Some shore excursions.
Reservation fees for select restaurants.
Laundry service.
Personal spa or beauty services.
Silversea loyalty program: Venetian Society
Unlike other cruise loyalty programs, Silversea’s program — the Venetian Society — does not award points. It doesn’t have elite status tiers, either. Instead, members earn “days” based on the length of each sailing. The more days they accrue, the more benefits they can receive.
Here’s what Venetian Society members can expect to receive based on the number of days accrued:
All members. By joining the program and completing your first sailing, you’re eligible for 5% savings on certain upcoming sailings. This can represent great value on expensive cruises, meaning signing up makes sense even if you only plan to sail occasionally.
100+ days. 5% savings on all future door-to-door sailings.
250+ days. 10% savings on all future door-to-door sailings.
350 days. Once you reach this level, you are eligible for one complimentary seven-day sailing.
500 days. Reaching this milestone means enjoying a complimentary 14-day trip.
500+ days. After this landmark, members will receive one complimentary seven-day trip for each additional 150 days they sail.
How to redeem Silversea days
The best part about the Venetian Society is that the benefits are cumulative. It’s not similar to a points program where once you redeem points, your balance gets lower until you earn more. With Venetian Society, you can take advantage of that perk once you hit the next milestone while enjoying previous bonuses.
For example, once you hit 350 days, you are eligible for a complimentary seven-day voyage. But, you can also take 10% off any door-to-door cruises — a perk you receive after reaching 250 days — you book after that.
Frequently asked questions
Does Silversea have free Wi-Fi?
Yes. Like most of its onboard amenities, Silversea cruises include basic Wi-Fi free of charge. Those in upper suites will receive free premium Wi-Fi speeds, and other guests can pay for a faster speed package. The prices vary by sailing and ship.
Is Silversea all-inclusive?
Yes, everything is included in the “port-to-port” fare. Adding airfare and ground transfers is part of the “door-to-door” offering.
How much is the Silversea drink package?
Drinks are included in the all-inclusive fare, so no additional drink package is offered.
Does Silversea require a covid vaccine or test?
No, but some destinations may have their requirements. For example, there may be some destinations or embarkation points where unvaccinated travelers must provide a negative covid test, and vaccinated travelers would have to show proof of receiving the vaccine. All requirements and protocols are subject to change.

Carry-ons, rolling luggage, trunks and duffels. There are a plethora of baggage options to choose from before you jet off on your next flight. But can you check boxes on a plane?
There are plenty of reasons you might wish to do so. Perhaps you’re moving across the country, bringing a care package of snacks to a friend or you bought more souvenirs than you expected.
Whatever the reason, the question is valid. Can boxes be checked luggage? Here’s what you need to know.
Can I check a box as luggage?
Can you check a cardboard box on a plane in lieu of a more traditional suitcase? Generally, the answer is yes.
As long as it’s sturdy enough to make it through the rough-and-tumble screening and transportation process, follows airline size restrictions and doesn’t contain any prohibited substances, most airlines don’t have a problem with passengers checking boxes as luggage.
Do all airlines accept boxes as checked luggage?
First, you must determine what the right cardboard box size for an international flight or domestic flight should be.
To do so, check with your airline. Size and weight restrictions vary, though the same rules for more traditional checked baggage apply.
If in doubt, contact your airline and simply ask, “Can I check boxes as luggage?” The airline will likely be more than happy to help you out. Just ensure you’re within its size and weight limits.
Here are some guidelines for several airlines.
Southwest: Passengers are always welcome to check two bags for free on Southwest flights. And that includes boxes. Each one should weigh 50 pounds or less and all measurements combined (Length + Width + Height) should total 62 inches or less.
American Airlines: How many bags or boxes you can check as luggage depends on the class of service and your destination. But a combined measurement of 62 inches and 50 pounds is the maximum for most flights. For travel to and from Mexico, boxes can be a bit larger: up to 80 linear inches, but there are seasonal limitations for checking boxes for destinations with luggage restrictions, so check before you pack.
United: Your MileagePlus status and cabin determine your bag or box allowance. But economy includes a 50-pound max while elite members, first and business class get 70 pounds. All can be max 30 inches x 20 inches x 12 inches. Boxes on flights to Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean can only be a combined 42 inches.
Delta: Similar to other airlines, bags and boxes you plan to check should have a combined measurement of no more than 62 inches and weigh 50 pounds or less. Boxes specifically are not permitted on flights to and from Brazil, Mexico and Chile. And they are only permitted to Central or South America if they are in original packaging in a factory-sealed box.
Content restrictions
Can boxes be checked luggage? Sure, but what’s in them still matters.
No matter what you’re checking as baggage, the rules for prohibited items still apply. Here are some common items you can’t check in boxes or luggage according to TSA:
Items that cannot be checked
Alcoholic beverages over 140 proof.
Bear spray.
CO2 cartridges and oxygen cylinders.
Explosives.
Electronic cigarettes.
Compressed gas or other fuels.
Fireworks.
Lithium ion batteries with more than 100 watt hours.
Power banks.
Spray paint.
Additionally, airlines sometimes have different rules and packing requirements for those traveling with firearms and ammunition, so ask your airline before you pack to find out how best to check those items.
Tips for packing a box as luggage
While your can generally check a box as luggage, you’ll want to pack smart. After all, a box can be more easily crushed, torn or damaged than a hardsided or even softsided suitcase, so you’ll want to make sure the contents are protected.
First, choose a sturdy, heavy-duty box that fits within your airline’s size restrictions. If all you have seems a bit flimsy, line the sides with additional cardboard to reinforce the box.
Then, carefully pack the contents, keeping weight requirements in mind. Use plenty of padding materials if any items are fragile.
Then, when it’s time to seal up the box, tape it well, including on all the seams and corners. You may want to add more than one layer of packing tape, just to be safe.
You may be tempted to wrap your box in plastic wrap, but check with your airline before you do to ensure your arrival and departure destinations don’t have restrictions regarding plastic film.
Finally, it wouldn’t hurt to put an extra roll of tape in your carry-on just in case you have to open your box back up at the airport for a safety check.
Checking boxes on planes recapped
Can you check a box as luggage? On most airlines and to most destinations, the answer is yes.
Just keep airline size and weight restrictions in mind, make sure to leave out restricted items and pack your box carefully so it arrives at your destination in one piece.

Cruising is a huge industry, so it makes sense that the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) — which started out shipping cargo — got in on the venture in 1988 with the purchase of its first cruise ship. Since then, the company has been steadily growing, adding new ships and destinations to its thriving cruise line.
Although it’s headquartered in Switzerland, you’ll find MSC cruises all over the world, including throughout the United States. Let’s take a look at MSC’s cruises, where they sail and what to expect when you’re aboard.
About MSC cruises
Here’s a quick overview of some of MSC’s key features.
Package types: There are three levels of experience to choose from on MSC. Bella is the least expensive, while Fantastica allows you to get free in-room breakfast and select your room type. Aurea is MSC’s top-tier package and includes access to exclusive amenities, as well as additional discounts and dining privileges.
Cabin types: On MSC ships you’ll find the standard cruise ship cabins, including interior, ocean view, veranda and various types of suites.
Main U.S. routes: MSC has only a handful of departure ports from within the U.S. Most of its routes depart from Miami to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.
Points currency and loyalty program: The loyalty program of MSC is called the Voyager’s Club. Points are earned for the cruises you take and the money you spend while on board.

You can find MSC cruises all over the globe, including the Caribbean, Canada, New England, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Northern Europe, South Africa, South America and Asia. There are also worldwide cruises that sail to several regions around the globe.
MSC’s worldwide cruises come in as the longest trips, with itineraries lasting as many as 127 nights. Meanwhile, the cruise line’s shortest options include weekend trips to the Bahamas sailing for just two nights.
MSC cruise prices
The reviews of MSC Cruises will likely mention the price of your trip, which is often cheaper than comparable trips on other popular cruise lines. Of course, the total cost will vary based on the trip duration, time of year and what kind of room you select. The least expensive options you’ll find are on short Mediterranean cruises, which can cost as little as $119 per person.
Prices are also affected by the dates that you’re traveling. A three-night cruise to the Bahamas can cost as little as $149 per person, but that same trip can cost up to $349 per person during periods of high demand.
As you’d expect, the most expensive cruises on MSC are the longest. For example, the 127-night World Cruise costs $21,929 per person.

Neither Wi-Fi nor specialty drinks are included as part of the base price, but they can be purchased separately. The drink package has a range of options, including non-alcoholic drinks such as soda and different types of alcohol.
