It’s no trick, Home Depot will again have Skelly, its 12-foot-tall animatronic skeleton available for Halloween shopping this season. And a few giant friends, too.
The coveted – and colossal – skeleton, which has moving, blinking eyes, has been a Halloween hit since the home improvement giant first made it available in 2020. Skelly, which costs $299, typically sells out just as it did earlier this year during Home Depot’s “Halfway to Halloween” event in April.
Skelly will be available again when this year’s line of Halloween products drops on Thursday, July 18, the retailer told USA TODAY.
Home Depot hinted at the July 18 arrival of Halloween products on Instagram recently.
Here’s what you need to know about how to turn your neighbors’ heads this spooky season.

“Our superfans are the heart and soul of our Halloween program,” Lance Allen, Home Depot’s senior merchant of decorative holiday, said in a statement to USA TODAY. “They inspire us to continually innovate and bring new designs to stores and online year after year.”
Currently available on on HomeDepot.com are several animatronic decorations, all 5 feet or taller: scary butler ($209), talking clown ($199), a trio of witches ($129), a ghostly bride ($99.99), moaning skeleton ($89.98), zombie with a chain saw ($69.99), scarecrow ($69.98), individual witches ($59.99-up), and grim reaper ($59.98).
Halloween: We like to spend and to plan ahead
Halloween is a hallowed holiday for many Americans, with consumers setting spending records each of the last three years – $12.2 billion in 2023, according to the National Retail Federation.
Nearly all Americans (97%) say they plan to buy something to celebrate Halloween – that’s more than any other holiday, according to research firm Numerator, which surveyed more than 5,100 U.S. consumers on 2024 holiday plans. Christmas and Valentine’s Day come in close behind at 96%, the firm’s survey found.
Halloween: It’s a monster holiday for many
Skelly is just one example of how Americans love to go big on the holiday.
Costco has a new big skeleton of its own. The Giant Ground Breaking Skeleton is more than 5 feet tall – and stretches across more than 9 feet – and appears to be emerging from your front yard. It sports red-lighted eyes and makes scary sounds.
Just unveiled on Instagram by several Costco influencer accounts, the picture shows a price of $249.99.
Ashley Hargrove, a wardrobe stylist in Austin, Texas, posted a video on Instagram about how she found it in the store June 29.
“They’re selling out quick!!” she said “Looks like they’re priced at $250 in store but $330 online which includes the shipping cost!”
The giant skeleton was sold out on the Costco site on Friday. Some are selling for more than $700 on ebay.com.
Spirit Halloween will begin helping us all celebrate the holiday as more than 1,500 retail locations nationwide start opening next month. Its flagship store in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, opens Aug. 1.

Party City’s Halloween animatronic presale
Party City, which closed some of its 800 stores as part of a bankruptcy proceeding last year, started its big Halloween animatronics promotion in June.
Many items are currently sold out on the site, but you could check in stores for its giant decorations, including an emerging skeleton and a pumpkin head emerging from the ground. Currently available: a 9.7-foot Dr. Payne the Fire Eater on Stilts ($324.99).

In today’s world, where urban living often means embracing smaller living spaces, maximizing every square foot becomes paramount. Whether you’re residing in a cozy apartment in Minneapolis, MN, a rental home in Overland Park, KS, or a compact studio in Springfield, MO, the art of space-saving is essential for creating a comfortable and functional environment. From clever storage solutions to strategic furniture arrangements, navigating limited square footage requires creativity and ingenuity. In this article, we’ll explore a myriad of practical tips and tricks to help you make the most out of your small space, allowing you to live large even in compact quarters.
1. Built-in storage to optimize every inch of your space
Emer Gillespie, founder and director of modern and contemporary lighting store Spark & Bell, suggests utilizing built-in storage solutions such as recessed shelving, under-stair storage, and custom cabinets to fully optimize your space. This approach not only enhances functionality but also ensures a tidy and organized appearance, allowing you to make the most of every inch of your home or office.
“Built-in lighting is also key,” emphasizes Gillespie. “You can achieve this by either wiring it in behind the storage units or incorporating plug-and-switch lights. This approach eliminates the need to call in electricians for extensive rewiring, saving both time and money. By strategically placing lighting within your built-in storage, you can illuminate your space effectively without compromising on aesthetics or functionality.”
2. Get the most out of your furniture
Prioritizing functionality is essential for crafting a practical living environment within limited space. Below, two furniture experts share insights on selecting the ideal pieces to optimize your home’s layout and functionality.
Utilize multi-purpose pieces
“One of the reasons why we love Danish furniture is its multi-function capabilities and ability to blend in with many styles,” says Jackie Williams, Furnish Me Vintage, offering restored and original mid-century modern and Danish furniture. “Integrate minimalist Danish furniture effortlessly with vintage or contemporary decor. Opt for a teak credenza, serving as both a sleek media center with ample storage and a chic addition to your space. Explore the versatility of expanding draw-leaf dining tables, seamlessly transitioning from compact daily use to expanded settings for gatherings. These tables also double as convenient work desks, ideal for home offices. Danish furniture excels in maximizing utility, offering ingenious solutions for space-constrained European homes.”
Employ the floating furniture technique
“To maximize space in your home, try employing the ‘floating furniture’ technique, which involves positioning furniture away from walls to establish a fluid, open layout,” suggests John Adams of Fine Furniture Los Angeles. “Additionally, it allows for versatile use of space, fosters creativity in layout design, and creates opportunities for focal points. Ultimately, incorporating this technique enhances the perceived spaciousness and livability of your home.”
3. Sometimes more storage isn’t useful
While it may seem counterintuitive, excessive storage can sometimes lead to clutter if not strategically utilized. Jacqueline Chen, founder and interior designer at The Glade Design weighs in on how to appropriately incorporate storage solutions.
“Having lots of storage might not always be the best idea,” says Chen. “Instead of prioritizing quantity, consider the functionality and accessibility of your storage spaces. Evaluate your daily routines and movement patterns within your home to identify areas where storage would be most beneficial. Opt for storage solutions that align with these usage patterns, placing them in convenient locations to streamline organization and minimize clutter buildup.”
4. Clear out unworn clothing items
Ever find yourself overwhelmed by your closet? An overflowing one leads to frustration and inefficiency, adding clutter and disarray to your living space, which affects your overall well-being. We hear from several personal stylists on how to declutter and organize your closet effectively, reclaiming space and restoring a sense of order to your home.
Slowly purge items you no longer love
“The simplest way to maximize space in your closet is to clear out your unworn items,” states personal style expert Elysha Lenkin. “Set aside 30 minutes to sort through your wardrobe, pulling out any pieces you haven’t worn for over a year. Move these pieces to the front to make them more visible. Every day, select one of these pieces and decide whether to wear it that day or clear it from your closet. This daily routine not only optimizes closet space, but also helps you reconnect with your clothes and curate a more functional wardrobe that contributes to preserving the additional space you’ve created.”
Keep your closet neat and tidy
Gab, NYC-based and virtual personal stylist at Wardrobe Editor, advises starting with a cleanout when building an organization system around a smaller wardrobe. “Remove items that don’t fit, are damaged, or don’t make you feel good. Organize each category (tops, sweaters, jeans) together in a designated space, ensuring neatness by hanging or folding items uniformly. Store less-used or seasonal items in less accessible areas, prioritizing easy access for frequently worn pieces.”
Display clothes for the current season only
“I advise all of my clients to only keep seasonally appropriate clothes in their closet,” shares image consultant and personal shopper Katherine Rose of Capsule Wardrobe Stylist. “This minimizes clutter and decision-making fatigue, allowing for seasonal wardrobe curation. Store out-of-season items in canvas garment bags in a designated storage space at home.”
Review your wardrobe with a critical eye
“If you’re short on space, consider going through your wardrobe with a critical eye,” says Tara Williams, Certified Image Consultant/Personal Stylist at Style Elevation With Tara. “Most people only wear 20 percent of their wardrobe 80 percent of the time. That means a lot of clothes are taking up closet space and creating decision fatigue. Ask yourself the following questions when deciding whether to keep an item: Does this fit? Have I worn it in the last year? Does this represent who I am now, in this season of my life? Do I love it?”
5. Opt for smaller furniture
“In compact living spaces, furnishing poses a unique challenge due to the diverse needs of everyday living,” explains David King, president and CEO of DōMA Home Furnishings in St. Petersburg, FL and Tampa, FL. “In a narrow living room, every piece of furniture matters. Opt for slender tables, wall sconces, and compact seating like tight-back sofas or club chairs to save floor space. Choose wall-mounted shelves and floating desks instead of bulky furniture. Divide the space with furniture, such as a smaller sofa in the center, flanked by a convertible console table and smaller dining chairs, creating a versatile and intimate area.”
6. Utilize vertical space
Maximizing vertical space offers numerous benefits for organization and functionality within a room. Denise Allan, a Certified Professional Organizer at Simplify Experts in Seattle, WA, emphasizes the advantages of utilizing bookshelves.
“It is great to use your vertical space well with bookshelves,” shares Allan. “I prefer those with cabinet doors below and shelves above to avoid excessive visual clutter, minimize noise, and ease dusting. A golden rule of organizing is to not fill spaces, drawers, or cupboards over 80% full, you need some empty space to make retrieval of items easy.”
7. Use the back of the door in the bathroom
“Struggling with limited storage in a small bathroom?” asks Susan Stewart, owner and professional organizer at Perfectly Placed St. Louis, MO. “Utilize the back of the door with an organizing system like the Elfa from The Container Store, featuring versatile baskets perfect for towels, bath toys, and other essentials. You can find options in various sizes that offer customizable storage solutions to optimize your space.”
8. Purge and declutter
Over time, we gather possessions that may outlive their usefulness, often without noticing the gradual clutter accumulating in our homes. It’s natural to hang onto items for their potential future utility. However, overlooking the clutter can take a toll on our mental well-being and our usable space. We hear from professional organizers on hacks to keep clutter at bay.
Practice the one-in, one-out rule
“You control your space, not the other way around, so choose to be picky about the things you own,” advises Kammy Lee, professional organizer at Organized By Kammy in Chicago, IL. “Avoid defaulting to accumulate ever-growing collections by using the ‘one-in, one-out’ rule, limiting once-a-year items (such as Halloween mugs and Valentine’s Day towels), and specialized purpose items (such as juicers, breadmakers). Let go of ‘someday’, ‘meh’, and ‘just in case’ items, and fill your space with only the things you truly need, use, and love.”
Create a donation station
“The key to maximizing a small space is owning items you truly love and use,” explains Mary Ann, professional organizer at Find Your Gold. “Create a donation station — whether it’s a box, bin, or bag—and easily declutter as you go about your daily routine. Once it’s full, drop off donations, return items, pass along to friends, or prepare items for sale. Your donation station serves multiple purposes beyond just donations.”
9. Establish a nightly home reset routine
“Your living space can instantly feel more organized if you commit to resetting it each evening,” explains Anne Lunsford, professional organizer at Simply Easy Organizing in North Carolina. “Tidy up your space by putting away stray items and completing kitchen tasks. Prepare for the next day by creating a to-do list and gathering the necessities for tomorrow. With consistency, this 5-10 minute routine will keep your space organized and cultivate positive habits that will spill over into other aspects of your life.”
By tidying up regularly, you prevent clutter from accumulating, making your space feel more spacious and organized. Additionally, a nightly reset allows you to start each day with a clean slate, reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm in your living environment. This routine also ensures that essential items are readily accessible, saving time and effort in your daily activities.
10. Choose similar colors
Jacqueline Chen of The Glade Design suggests incorporating bold colors sparingly, focusing on one or two key elements, while maintaining the majority of the palette in neutral tones.
“Picking items with similar colors can make a room feel larger than it actually is,” emphasizes Chen. “If you’re into bold colors, try limiting them to just one or two items, and keep the rest in neutral tones. This not only makes those bold items stand out, but it also creates the illusion of a bigger, tidier space.”
11. Opt for the minimalist approach
“The minimalist choice, in furniture and decoration, is fundamental if we are facing small spaces,” shares interior designer Sergio Nistico. “When it comes to furniture and decoration, prioritize essentials. Opt for a strategically placed, sizable painting over numerous small objects. Consider structural interventions like combining the kitchen with the living room to create larger usable spaces, complemented by a suitable color scheme. Choose furniture with dual functions, such as a breakfast table that doubles as a workspace, to maximize space efficiency.”
12. Be mindful of what’s in your space
Give thoughtful consideration of every item’s purpose and value within your living environment while prioritizing functionality and ensuring that each object serves a specific need or brings joy to your life. Below are expert strategies from organizing and cleaning professionals to help you make intentional decisions about your belongings.
Minimize belongings on display
“You can maximize your space by being very mindful of what’s in it,” explains Brittany Overstreet, Owner and Lead Organizer at Organize with Brittany serving South Carolina. “Ideally, your horizontal surfaces like counters and dresser tops should only house items that you use daily while your display shelves should only contain items that have sentimental value. If possible, nothing should be touching your floor except furniture. Bonus! Picking up or cleaning will be so much easier when you have less to put away or clean around.”
Keep your space clutter-free
“The key to maximizing your living space is to keep it simple,” states Cleany NYC. “Don’t try to cram too many items into your area, and focus on creating a clean, clutter-free environment. Designate zones for specific activities and keep items related to those activities within their respective areas. Implement a regular tidying routine, like dedicating 15 minutes each day to quickly clean and organize one part of your home, to keep clutter from building up. Additionally, adopt a digital mindset by scanning and storing documents and photos electronically, reducing the need for physical storage.”
13. Embrace a cleaning routine
Cleaning and decluttering are essential for small-space living because they help maximize the available space and create a more organized and functional environment. Here’s expert advice from professional house cleaners on the most effective methods for maintaining a tidy household.
Keep your home clutter-free
“To maximize space in your living area, embrace a regular decluttering routine to keep unnecessary items at bay,” suggests Comforts Cleaning Services in Chula Vista, CA. “Utilize vertical storage solutions like shelves or wall-mounted organizers to free up floor space or incorporate multifunctional furniture pieces such as ottomans with hidden storage or sofa beds to optimize functionality without sacrificing space.”
Set a monthly cleaning schedule
“Integrate both cleaning and decluttering into your regular routine,” advises Poiette Noel
Owner/Executive Manager at No More Dust Maid Services in Baltimore, MD. “Start by setting a monthly schedule to sort through and remove items that are no longer needed or used. As you declutter, clean the newly freed-up spaces before rearranging remaining items, which can often uncover additional storage opportunities. Regularly cleaning and decluttering not only maintains a tidy environment but also enhances the perception of space, making your living area feel larger and more organized.”
15. Enhance the perception of space with the use of mirrors
It’s no secret that mirrors are versatile and practical decor elements that not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space but also serve functional purposes. Sarah Chapman, owner and designer of Sarah Lorraine Interiors, explains how mirrors also serve as versatile additions to small rooms.
“Mirrors are a powerful tool for enhancing the perception of space and brightness in small rooms,” shares Chapman. “Strategically placing mirrors across from windows allows them to capture and reflect natural light, effectively brightening up the space. This reflection creates an illusion of depth and openness, making the room appear larger and airier than it actually is. Additionally, mirrors can be used to reflect other sources of light, such as lamps or overhead fixtures, further amplifying the brightness in the room. Choosing mirrors with decorative frames or unique shapes can also add visual interest and style to the space while serving their practical purpose of expanding and illuminating the room.”
14. Create ambiance with strategic lighting choices
Jenny Neilson, principal designer at Neilson Design Studio, underscores the significance of strategic lighting in creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
“Soft, intimate lighting, like lamps, cultivates a cozy space, in stark contrast to harsh overhead lighting’s impersonal glare,” explains Neilson. “Wall sconces and directional spotlights further enhance the atmosphere and visually expand the space, especially when paired with light-colored walls. These fixtures offer versatility, providing targeted illumination for tasks and highlighting focal points such as artwork or architectural features. By strategically placing lighting fixtures and avoiding harsh overhead lighting, you can create a welcoming environment that feels both comfortable and visually spacious.”
16. Use area rugs to define visual boundaries
“It’s counterintuitive, but an appropriately scaled rug will pull your focus outward, away from individual pieces of furniture, creating a sense of expansiveness,” explains Naomi McCormick, Principal Designer at Naomi McCormick Design serving Philadelphia and New Jersey. “They’re also incredibly useful for breaking up an open, multi-purpose space because they help to visually anchor separate areas within the space. Another bonus: They’re one of the best ways to embrace and amplify the coziness of a smaller space by incorporating added color and texture.”
17. Don’t forget about corner space
With thoughtful design choices, corners can transform from overlooked areas into useful space, contributing to a more functional and visually pleasing room. Spector Furniture in Ansonia, CT, highlights the importance of utilizing corners effectively.
“Corners often remain underutilized in rooms, presenting untapped potential for maximizing space efficiency,” explains Spector Furniture. “By strategically incorporating corner furniture pieces such as entertainment units and curios, you can fully utilize this valuable space while adding both functionality and visual interest to your room.

1. Display large artwork
Incorporating large artwork into your home serves as a great way to bring love into your living space, as it adds visual appeal and reflects personal taste and emotions.
“Any large artwork that depicts love or people working together in harmony is a great way to bring love into your home. Be sure to position it in your hall so it is the first thing you see or in your living room,” notes consultant Feng Shui West Country.
2. Decorate with a custom area rug
Bringing a custom area rug into your home offers functional and stylish benefits.
“It helps define and delineate different living spaces within an open floor plan, creating a sense of organization and intimacy. A custom rug allows you to express your unique taste and tie together various design elements, adding warmth, texture, and personality to your living space,” states family business The Carpet Workroom.
3. Clean with your loved ones
One of the keys to bringing love into a home is to approach house cleaning with a positive mindset and a focus on creating a loving and harmonious environment.
“Involve your loved ones in the cleaning process to promote teamwork and togetherness,” shares Le Vvintre Living Luxury Cleaning Services. “Assign appropriate tasks to each person and work together to clean and organize the home. This not only lightens the workload but also strengthens bonds and fosters a sense of unity.”
“Nothing says you care like a home that’s not only clean but also radiates a welcoming scent that hugs you the moment you walk through the door. Imagine the gentle fragrance filling your home, creating an atmosphere where love thrives in every corner,” adds Affordable Cleaning Today.
4. Hand-select consignment home decor
Hand-selecting consignment home decor infuses each piece in your home with unique character and history, creating a personalized and curated living space that reflects your individual style.
Lori Schroeder of Consign Couture remarks, “Transform your living space into a haven of love by carefully hand-selecting consignment home décor that resonates with your style. Explore local consignment shops or online platforms to discover unique pieces that evoke positive emotions, memories, and love.”
5. Bring in candles
Introducing scented candles into your home is a delightful way to bring love into your space, as the soft, warm glow creates an intimate and cozy ambiance.
“Nothing whispers ‘I love you’ quite like the soft flicker and warm scent of a beautifully crafted candle,” says luxury candle company melt. “Imagine a candle that blends the sultry notes of rose with the exotic whispers of orchid, setting the stage for those oh-so-precious moments of connection. It’s like a love letter but in fragrance form.”
6. Think in pairs of two
Reiko Gomez of Reiko Home recommends, “In the bedroom, create balance and harmony in by having two bedside tables and two table lamps that are relatively equal in size and style. Think of ways to make your bedroom feel like a cozy cocoon of rest. For example, adding a plush rug, pretty bedding and thick curtains, of fresh cut flowers. A space that feels serene, soft, and inviting attracts good experiences into your life.”
Rose quartz crystals are believed to emanate a gentle and compassionate energy.
“In Feng Shui, love is associated with the element of earth, shares transformation expert LMG Creative. “Bring loving earth energy into your home with two rose quartz crystals. Ensure the pair is balanced in size to symbolize an equal partnership.”
7. Bring in love through floral designs
Incorporating floral design adds a touch of nature’s beauty, infusing the space with freshness and positivity.
Designer Avalana Simpson from Avalana Design comments, “Romantic florals in interior design will always stand the test of time. There’s something about hand-painted cascading flowers in full bloom, which brings a level of warmth, love, and contentment to a space. Often, flower power is overlooked for bedrooms, but intricate oversized blooms are perfect for adding a little love.”
8. Decorate with flowers
Flowers’ vibrant colors and natural fragrances create a visually appealing and emotionally uplifting atmosphere, thus bringing love into your home.
“Flowers are consistently a quintessential way to bring feelings of love into your home. From the sweet fragrance to the eye-catching color palette of a spring bouquet, bright blossoms emit an aesthetic that elevates your mood,” says flower company Fleurish Floral Studio.
“Try introducing fresh-cut flowers for a touch of natural beauty and freshness in your home while creating a warm and inviting atmosphere with soft lighting to enhance feelings of comfort and connection,” adds cleaning service Elite Maids RVA.

9. Hang photos of loved ones
Hanging photos of loved ones is a heartfelt way to bring love into your home, as the visual reminders of cherished moments and relationships.
“Hanging a framed photo of loved ones or special moments in your life can create a positive and nostalgic atmosphere in your living space. They also serve as great conversation starters as guests will inquire about the story behind the photos,” shares Kyle Cong Photography.
Brindy Ruby Photography says, “One of my favorite ways to bring love into my home is through photographs. The best photos to hang up are the ones where there is a true connection between loved ones. This could look like giggles while running through a field or snuggles on the couch.”
“Photos are a great way to bring love into your home. Display some in photo frames on shelves or cluster them together on a living room wall. A scrapbook or photo album can hold more loving memories. If you prefer digital, there are several digital photo frames that keep a slideshow of all of your favorite photos and can be updated at any time,” adds Leslie and Carlos of Absolute Luxury LLC.
10. Bring in plants
Taking care of plants fosters a sense of responsibility and connection with nature, contributing to a home environment that radiates love, care, and a touch of the outdoors.
“To bring more love into your home, fill it with things you love,” recommends watercolor painter My Giant Strawberry. “I’m an artist and a gardener so I always need to be surrounded by plants and art. Think about what brings you the most joy, whether it’s a reminder of those you love, mementos from special trips, or even just your favorite colors.”
“The bathroom rarely receives the kind of interior design attention our living rooms or bedrooms enjoy. Still, these smaller, occasionally steamy spaces are the perfect environment for all sorts of potted pals. Spider plants thrive in bathrooms due to their ability to tolerate low light and high humidity levels, for example, and it’s a similar story to the ever-in-vogue Monstera. Don’t be worried about accidentally killing them, either. Both of these specimens are extra hardy and require very little care,” adds Plant Studio.
11. Create a cozy corner
“We love the ‘cozy corner’ trend,” states luxury gift company MyCOCCO. “It’s all about carving out a little nook of comfort and tranquility in your home. Drawing inspiration from the Danish hygge concept, which is all about coziness and finding joy in the simple things.”
Add a snug armchair with a fluffy blanket thrown over it, a small shelf within arm’s reach stocked with beloved books, and a soft lamp casting a warm glow. This spot can become a private retreat for enjoying those quiet moments of reflection or losing oneself in a good read, creating the perfect backdrop for love to bloom in the simplest of activities.
12. Scent up your space
The subtle aroma of scents like vanilla, lavender, or citrus can foster a loving and cozy atmosphere.
“One of the ways to bring love into your home is through fragrance. This could be in the form of candles, diffusers, and room sprays. Pick up a candle or reed diffuser on your next grocery shopping trip and bring love into your home,” recommends candle business Nneka’s Candle Blog.
“If you’re looking for a fragrant welcome to your home, why not try a reed diffuser in your hallway or porch? There are many refreshing scents like Rhubarb & Ginger Gin with a touch of lime. Bring some love back into your bathroom with a eucalyptus and peppermint room spray with a built-in odor eliminator, making it the perfect choice to freshen any room,” shares scent company Lumiescents.
13. Paint the walls in a different color
Selecting warm and soothing tones can also create a loving environment.
Brilho Cleaning Services says, “Consider using warm and inviting colors like soft shades of red or muted tones of pink to create a cozy atmosphere in your home. Opt for colors that resonate with positive emotions, bringing a sense of warmth and connection. Balance vibrant hues with neutral tones for a harmonious and comforting environment.”
14. Hang plates on your walls
Hanging plates is a charming way to bring love into your home, as the carefully arranged display not only adds a touch of personal style but also reflects a sense of cherished memories.
“One way I bring love into our home is to decorate with plates we find at stores,” notes photographer Jeanna Hayes. “Sometimes, they have special meaning to us, and other times, we just like the pattern and buy it while we are together at the store. We are always on the hunt for our plate wall.”

15. Adding cool furniture pieces
Adding carefully chosen furniture pieces to your home is a thoughtful way to bring love, as each item can contribute to making the space feel like your own.
“Enhance the love in your home by incorporating comfortable and inviting furniture, creating spaces that encourage togetherness and relaxation,” shares mindfulness expert Still Jacey. “Select pieces with sentimental value or unique designs that resonate with your personal style, infusing warmth and personality into your living spaces.”
“My Uncle John would probably roll over in his grave to see his favorite chair covered in pale coral and pink. But I loved my Uncle and the memory of him sitting in his cozy, comfy chair with brown upholstery,” remarks florist Camrose Hill. “Instead of getting rid of the chair, I transformed it by upholstering it into something that fits my space and that I love.”
16. Host dinner parties
Hosting dinner parties and wine nights is a delightful way to bring love into your home, fostering a sense of connection and warmth through shared meals and good conversation.
“I love hosting dinner parties and wine nights for friends and family, which has resulted in the most beautiful memories in this space. I believe that the best parts of a home aren’t the physical items you have in it, but the people who are there to share moments with you,” shares photographer Taylor Rossi.

Interior design enthusiast Ruqiya (@studioriuhome) knows a thing or two about how to make your home look chic without spending a ton of money.
She offers decorating and DIY tips and thrifting advice online for those on a budget.
She brought viewers to her local Dollar Tree in a TikTok video as she scanned the aisles and picked out several products that would work well in any home.
“What I would buy as a designer from Dollar Tree,” the subtitle read.
First up were Iridescent Glass Candleholders, which were great for holding makeup, cotton balls, or cotton swabs.
Next, she held up an incense holder with a wood design that she loved the “simplicity” of.
She then moved on to the huge display of two-pack pink and purple candles at the discount store, which she called a “perfect pop of color” for Valentine’s Day.
They had great decor up for the holiday, so Ruqiya showed off a few items that stuck out to her.

She thought a two-piece set of red “twisty candles” was a “must” because they usually sell for about $40 at Anthropology and more than $10 anywhere else.
There were also pink Luminessence Taper Candles that she thought were “so pretty.”
The decor expert loved the design on small pink candle holders and thought a mini off-white rainbow-shaped sculpture was “perfect for a girl’s room or nursery.”
Even though she thrifted a ton of her glass candleholders, she admitted she had no idea that Dollar Tree sold them.
At the time she recorded the video, she said her favorite piece was a “beautiful” Burnt Amber candle, which is set to be “all the rage in 2024.”
Afterward, Ruqiya wrote in the caption that her “favorite has to be the twisted candles and burnt amber candle holders.”
She added that the iridescent candle holders were “adorable” and “look identical to the collection at World Market,” which retail for almost $10.
She also pointed out a Bubble Square Scented Pillar Candle that was so popular that there was only one available at her store.
Lastly, she capitalized on the many baskets available at the store in different shades and sizes.
She picked a pink one up for a baby shower gift basket she was making.

Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays you either love (no pun intended) or hate. Me? I love it. It’s my favorite holiday. Candy and chocolates are in full supply, pastel colors are everywhere you look, and you get an excuse to celebrate the ones you care about (romantic and platonic alike)—what’s not to love? Plus, all the pink and red decor is a nice pick-me-up after the gloomy month of January. To me, Valentine’s Day decor serves as a nice reminder that spring is almost here and love is in the air, which is why I don’t hesitate to add a few fun accessories to my space for February.
So whether you’re gearing up for a girls’ night with your Galentines or just trying to get into the spirit of love, check out these heart-eye-worthy Valentine’s Day decor pieces to add to your home.
The Best Valentine’s Day Decor for February and Beyond
Candles + Decor
If you’re keeping your Valentine’s Day decor on the simpler side this year, a few accessories can go a long way. Here are some of our favorite pieces to make a statement, big or small:
Kitchen + Drinkware
Whether you want to romanticize your at-home happy hours or go all out for a Galentine’s Day dinner, these kitchenware finds are too cute to pass up.
Dollar Tree Plus might prove to be one of the best home decor stores for your style if your style includes design on a budget. For instance, do you want to add some playful charm to your home with adorably fluffy pillows? Check out the Plush Fluffy Pillow, selling for $5 per pillow at Dollar Tree Plus. A happy customer gave these soft pillows five out of five stars. You should consider buying a bunch of them to add to various locations of your home for fun charisma. While Dollar Tree — without the Plus — sells some pillowcases, they don’t have any decorative pillows.
Alternatively, do you want to light up your home with beachy details? Make a splash with the Marine-Themed String Lights, available for $5 at Dollar Tree Plus. At over 5 feet long with seashell-like, starfish, and other beach-inspired aspects, the ocean-esque string lights have a perfect five-star rating. Although classic Dollar Tree offers some Valentine’s Day-themed and a few other options for string lights, you’ll only find the creative, ultra-specific ocean theme from Dollar Tree Plus.
Dollar Tree Plus also offers many fake plants, including the Faux Plant, 12-in., the Artificial Potted Topiaries and Snake Plants, 12-in., and the Decorative Faux Potted Plants, 14.17-in. to spruce up your home. The original Dollar Tree has no such products.
When you think of the world today, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the negativity that saturates our news feeds and social media. But beneath all the grime and grimness lies a world full of countless wholesome people and things. To prove this point, we’ve compiled a list of some awesomely heartwarming behaviors below.
1. When People Get Really Excited Over Something
One user posted, “When people get really excited over something they enjoy.”
Another user replied, “I’m like 99% certain this is the only reason my girlfriend is into me. I’ll catch myself getting way too into the weeds explaining some tedious technical thing that she obviously couldn’t care less about, start apologizing for getting carried away, and say, ‘No, keep going. I love seeing you get really into things you care about, even if I don’t understand!’ She’s a keeper.”
2. When Someone Remembers a Really Small Detail I’ve Only Mentioned Once
There’s very little that can make you feel more loved than when you feel seen. There’s something uniquely special to knowing that somebody paid close attention to you, to what you said and what you love.
One user shared, “When someone remembers a really random small detail I’ve only mentioned once.”
Another user commented, “Bought a girlfriend her favourite flower for Valentine’s Day. She was blown away because she didn’t remember ever saying it was her favourite. She had mentioned it in passing on maybe the second date. But yeah, I won a billion brownie points for that.”
3. Doing the Right Thing Even When It’s Inconvenient
It’s hard enough to do the right thing when it seems minor or negligible, or when nobody’s going to know. But if you choose to do the right thing even when it might hurt other people’s perception of you, that’s a pretty incredible display of character.
Another Redditor posted, “Doing the right thing even when it’s inconvenient. I was on a date, and he took a call from a friend in crisis. They worked the problem out, and he said ‘I love you’ to his friend (who said it back). He explained he needed to take the call and apologized that it happened during the date. No apology is necessary! He demonstrated loyalty and vulnerability, and it was incredibly [attractive]. Even better that it’s just who he is; none of it was for show.”
4. Fully Present Parenting
There’s a lot of different methods and theories for parenting out there, but no matter what route you take, it’s crucial to remember that children are whole persons. Their desires matter and make a difference, even when correction is needed. And there’s nothing more beautiful than seeing adults treat children with respect and personhood.
“My husband will run around playing games with our son in the playground and fully commit to whatever game. There’s no standing around talking to the adults; he will get fully involved in the make-believe world. 10/10, fully present parenting,” stated one user.
5. People Who Make Themselves Crack Up
One Reddit user shared, “People that make themselves crack up. People with their particular and weird little sense of humour that unashamedly laugh at what they think is so funny. Extra points if they’re laughing because of a joke they’re telling themselves. It’s my favourite thing to see someone do.
“As long as the joke doesn’t seriously hurt other people. I love good dark humor. If someone’s genuinely trying to be hateful, it loses appeal completely.”
6. Seeing a Man Be Genuinely Happy for Someone Else
One user shared, “Seeing a man be genuinely happy for someone else, I recently discovered this about myself.”
Another user replied, “As an add-on to that—when a man is so supportive of his partner and their goals but does not feel threatened by them. I have a bachelor’s degree, while my husband has an AA, so I’ve always made more money than him. I intend to go back to grad school someday & he recently even asked if I’d do my PhD after, something I hadn’t even considered, not because I don’t think I could do it; I just hadn’t thought that far ahead. It made me so giddy knowing he fully believes in my capabilities & is ready to support me no matter what.”
7. When Someone Helps Old People
The same ego-centric attitude that blinds people to the personhood of children often makes them blind to the personhood and respectability of the elderly. But each of us has been young, and we will eventually be old. We were whole persons then, we are now, and we will be as we age too. We should treat other people with the respect we hope will be offered to us.
“When someone helps old people. Maybe getting up to give their seat to them in a public bus or, in general, helping them carry their heavy bags or something,” one user shared.
One user replied, “Compassion, in general, is such an attractive quality.”
8. Making Sure That Everyone Around Her Has Eaten on Time
At some point, we’ve all been victim to low blood sugar. Whether you actually felt weak and shaky, or you just got grumpy and irritable, or you noticed it was harder to think clearly, at some point we’ve been affected by the symptoms. So how incredible would it be to have a friend who didn’t take your attitude personally, but just asked if you’ve eaten anything?
Another user shared, “A friend of mine has this habit of ensuring everyone around her has eaten on time. ‘A well-fed tummy makes the brain think properly.’ That’s her exact words.”
9. Silliness, the Sillier, the Hotter
There is something magical about having friends who know how to be silly. It’s as if the walls really come down and they let you see the playful heart they’ve been holding on to since childhood. Silliness is about as wholesome as it gets.
“Silliness, the sillier, the hotter,” posted one user.
10. When a Person Knows the Right Time to Listen
Being able to problem-solve is wonderful, and being the friend who motivates others to take action is impressive. But in an emotional crisis, everybody needs a good listener. It’s extra special to have people you can rely on to listen and understand without feeling the need to solve or fix your problems.
One user shared, “When a person knows the right time to simply listen to someone in distress and the right time to offer advice.”
11. There Is Nothing Like Seeing Compassion in a Man
There is something almost universally wonderful about meeting a man who has tenderness and compassion.
Another Redditor shortly shared her husband’s story and said, “My husband grew up extremely poor. Not homeless, but close. Whenever we’re out, and we see someone asking for food, he will quietly walk over and take them to whatever restaurant they want. He will then order them whatever they want. When we met, he was in grad school and had no money. He still did this. It made me swoon.”
One commenter replied, “There is nothing like seeing compassion in a man.”
12. Confident Without Being Cocky
It takes a lot of character to be willing to let others get the credit, to show of that they know the answers, while you also know the answers. That’s humility. And humility with intelligence is an incredible trait. Humility allows us to see others and serve others, and help others do well; but paired with a good intellect and the ability to succeed well? That’s nearly unbeatable.
“How to explain this…? When I was in junior high, all the good students would raise their hands, barely staying in their seats, just desperately trying to get called on. There was this one guy, Jack, who just leaned back and watched. Totally chill. Jack NEVER raised his hand. But any time the teacher called on him, he knew the answer.
“He was the smartest guy in the class, but he felt ZERO desire to prove it or show off. I found that So. [Dang]. Hot. I’ve been drawn to quiet confidence ever since,” shared one Redditor.
13. They Cared About the Burdens I Face
Sympathy is the ability to care about somebody’s problems, but empathy is when you’re able to feel some of the same things they feel, either because you’ve been in the same circumstance or because you’ve felt those feelings in another situation. And empathy will win loyalty like no other skill or trait.
One user stated, “Empathy. I would follow someone into battle at the Fields of Pelennor or the Black Gate of Mordor if I got the sense that they understood and cared about the burdens I face.”
Another user confirmed and responded, “100% the same.”
14. When They Cook for Me
I’ve heard it said that when a friend or family member is grieving, instead of asking how they are, you can just ask if they’ve eaten yet today. And if they haven’t, you can take care of them and make them feel loved just by making them a meal to eat. Food really does act as a love language.
“Being cooked for. Nothing better than your significant other making sure you’re fed.”
15. He Can Talk to Anyone
“My husband is basically a collection of wholesome traits that I find outrageously attractive. He never snarks, gossips, or puts people down. He’s all about lifting people, whatever their life may be. He loves to hype people and celebrate life.
“He can talk to anyone and make a connection. He would go to anyone’s family cookout and legitimately be so happy to try the food and find out what your aunts and uncles were like. When I say, ‘Hey, someone new is coming to our house for dinner/to spend the weekend,’ he’s just like, ‘Cool! Let’s plan recipes!’
“Our Maine Coon has him absolutely under her control. He talks to her so sweetly. He’s precious with our old lady dog. One of my favorite pics of him is from a hike where her joints started hurting. He carried her like a baby the rest of the way, and she looks so happy in the pic.
“No matter how tired he is, when we are visiting any of our parents, he fixes things around their house for them. It’s nothing for him just to install a dishwasher or move machinery equipment.
“He really, really appreciates anything new he gets. Like I got him some nice sandals a few weeks ago, and he has told me how much he likes them at least four times.
“When we became a couple, he made a video for me. It was a screen recording of him deleting all his dating apps. Each one asked why he wanted to cancel/delete, and he gave them a 1-star review and wrote, ‘Didn’t have BurntGreens.’ And the two apps he did match with me on, he gave five stars and said, ‘Found BurntGreens.’
“In every decision I’ve seen him make, he chooses what’s best for the greater good over what’s easiest for himself.
“He’s become fishing buddies with our neighbour, who is a very good dude as well. My husband recently bought a boat—something both guys have wanted for a long time and the neighbor couldn’t afford. My husband said, ‘Now, this isn’t my boat. It’s our boat. We’re both captains.’
“When I told him how much I struggled with self-esteem stuff once, he bought a heart-shaped bowl and filled it with little folded pieces of paper, each describing something different he loved about me. …
“EDIT: I’m so glad y’all love him as much as I do! Man, I could talk about that dude all day.
“Someone commented on him sounding too optimistic. If you only knew this dude’s backstory—he’s lived through crazy, crazy life experiences and been so resilient. He wound up dropping out of high school as a result, lived through [some awful things], and pulled himself up. Today, he’s a self-taught IT engineer,” shared one user.
16. When Someone Is Singing or Humming to Themselves
There’s something beautiful about knowing that a person can be content and happy in their own little world. It’s as if they’re able to create their own little contented environment, and people who do that are so often able to invite you into cheerful and contented environments. Those people cultivate joy on purpose.
Another online user posted, “Whenever someone is singing or humming a song to themselves and they seem like they’re just lost in their own world, it usually makes my heart skip a beat. My ex used to do this a lot, and it was one of the cutest things they’d do.”
17. Being Friendly to Animals
It’s been a true test for ages now; if you’re kind to your animals, you’re likely to be kind to people as well. It takes humility and consideration to make sure your animals are taken care of properly, and if you’ve cultivated the ability to be kind and tender towards an animal, then it comes much easier with people.
“Being nice to animals,” one Redditor shared.
18 Watching Anyone Be Good With Kids
One user shared, “Watching anyone be good with kids, really listening and engaging with them makes me think nothing but about how nice they are, and I bet they’d look great being not nice to me in the bedroom …”
Another user replied, “I’ve been on the receiving end of this several times. First time it ever happened as a teen. I didn’t realize she pounced on me once we left the house because I was nice to her nephew and niece … “
19 When a Guy Has a Positive Mindset Despite All Odds
There’s a time for compassionate listening, and there’s a time for getting down to the solution. And sometimes finding a solution takes lots of work and gets pretty stressful. It requires the ability to come up with lots of ideas and the ability to cheerfully accept that many of those ideas may not be the right ones. That’s a pretty rare trait all around, but for women who are more focused on emotional connection, holding a relationship as separate from the process of finding a solution and shooting down ideas is extra hard. And therefore, extra fantastic.
Another user stated, “When a guy has a positive mindset despite all odds. The ability to find a solution instead of being negative is hot …”
One user replied, “In the same vein, women who can collaborate to solve a problem. I do IT work, so it’s a requirement at work, but when it happens outside of work naturally, it’s pretty f- awesome.”
20. Being Genuine
All of us put up some kind of front, at some point. But there’s a huge difference between simply toning down your normally exuberant behavior so you don’t disrupt a classroom, and practicing a masking behavior with the hope that nobody will see past it. And occasionally, you’ll meet someone who tries to keep the mask off entirely as often as possible, and their honest and openness can be really refreshing.
“Being genuine. So many people I deal with try to project this attitude and personality that just [isn’t] them, and it shows. It feels dishonest, and it feels shallow. Like they are trying to be some idealized person to capture someone they want, and then what will they do? Keep up the lie forever, change, or revert to who they are and hope the person will stay. It just is something that really means a lot to me is when someone is genuine with who they are. Even a s- person is less s- to me if they are true about it,” one user shared.

13 Things You Shouldn’t Do When You’re in the US
Are you planning a trip to the US? Culture varies a lot between countries, even countries that share borders. So if you’re headed to the good old U. S. of A, here are a few pointers to make your travels go more smoothly!
I don’t like Valentine’s Day — it fosters the notion that romance is something for special occasions. Worse, it’s yet another commercial holiday filled with cards, chocolates, flowers, and gifts. I reject the idea that romance is only for special occasions, and I reject the idea that buying stuff somehow demonstrates affection.
I believe it’s important for couples to find ways to express their love year-round. If you do choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, don’t feel obligated to give a dozen roses and a card — there are plenty of low-cost ways to say “I love you”. Here are just a few:
Love Letters
Instead of a card, write your partner a love letter. A mass-produced card isn’t nearly as romantic as a hand-written note. I don’t remember any of the cards that Kris has given me for Valentine’s Day, but I do recall with fondness all the notes and letters I’ve received. It’s a treat to sort through a pile of old papers and to stumble upon a note she wrote to me years ago.
Flowers
It can be fun to give flowers to your sweetheart, but think outside the box. Consider something other than roses. If your partner likes carnations, buy her carnations. If he likes irises, give him irises. Don’t be slavish to the red rose mentality. In some cases, a live plant may be most appropriate. I’ll bet Kris would be happier with potted tulips than with a bunch of roses.
Love Coupons
Use a word processor and clip art to create 8-12 “coupons” the size of a business card. Each coupon can be redeemed for something the recipient will appreciate. You might create love coupons that your partner can use for a night on the town, a candle-light dinner, a movie of their choice, a weekend getaway, guilt-free time with friends, or — if you’re feeling particularly romantic — fantasy fulfillment.
A Second “First Date”
The easy familiarity of a long-term relationship is a wonderful thing. But that familiarity can easily become a “rut”. Shake things up by pretending you’re going on your first date again. Give yourself a college student’s budget, and do the sorts of things you might have done when you were younger. Eat at the local burger joint or pizza parlor. Go bowling or roller-skating. Attend a free concert. Make out in the back row of the movie theater.
Dinner For Two
Prepare a romantic dinner at home. Instead of spending $50 or $100 for a night on the town, spend $25 to prepare a special dinner with your sweetheart. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also share the joy of cooking together. Here’s an easy, delicious recipe that’s perfect for a special occasion:
Port- and Soy-Glazed Beef Tenderloin (recipe by Caprial Pence, modified by J.D.)
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
2 (6-8 ounce) beef tenderloin
freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/2 cup port
Preheat the oven to 400 F. Season the tenderloin heavily with pepper. (I grind a couple tablespoons of the stuff so that the steak has almost a crust of pepper — you might want to start with less.) Heat the olive oil in a large ovenproof pan over high heat until smoking hot. Add the tenderloins to the pan and sear well, about 3 minutes per side. Set the pan in the oven and roast the tenderloins for about 6 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and set it over high heat. (Place a potholder over the handle of the pan — it’s hot!) Add the butter, soy sauce, and port, and cook until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 3 minutes. Turn the tenderloins over to coat well with the sauce, then serve hot. Drizzle with any remaining sauce.
This recipe isn’t exactly frugal — beef tenderloin is expensive — but it’s restaurant-quality and hard to goof up. Serve with potatoes and a glass of cabernet sauvignon. Dine by candlelight.
Private Rituals
Every couple has a collection of private rituals and symbols. These silly phrases and routines are like glue for a relationship. When Kris and I were first dating in college, for example, I picked up a horse-chestnut from the quad. It was smooth and strong and beautiful. I liked it. On a whim, I gave it to Kris. “This is a love nugget,” I told her. “It’s a reminder of how much you mean to me.” For almost twenty years now, horse-chestnuts have been a sort of secret code between us. I know it’s silly, but I’d rather have Kris give me a “love nugget” than have her buy me something new.
Saying “I love you” doesn’t have to be expensive, no matter what marketers want you to believe. Love comes from communication, shared ideals, and togetherness , not from buying things.
