Designers and trend experts have shared with us their favored bedroom trends for 2024, from popular color palettes to furniture styles, lighting and more.
An important room in the home where you start and end each day, your bedroom should be a restful sanctuary of calm and comfort, as well as a joyful showcase of your style.
bedroom ideas, the classics will often remain, such as crisp, quality bedding, good accent lighting and practical clothes storage, but there will always be an array of wonderful new interior design trends to explore that can provide you with some beautiful inspiration for your sleep space.
These are the bedroom design trends to know about for 2024
Whether you’re looking to giving your existing bedroom a much needed refresh, or are starting from scratch in a new space, our round-up of the latest bedroom trends can help you craft the perfect scheme.
1. Embrace a cozy and cocooning color palette
Camilla Clarke, creative director at Albion Nord says, ‘going into 2024, your bedroom should be the ultimate sanctuary space. Fully embrace cozy and calming colors, particularly soft blues, and deep olive greens. Pairing these shades with warm lighting will help to create feelings of restfulness and serenity.’
Calming colors do not always have to be light and bright for bedroom color ideas, sometimes these lighter colors can make a space feel a little cold. Dark, moody and earthy palettes can work just as well in creating a warming, comforting and cocooning space that helps us feel more relaxed and snug.
This chocolate brown bedroom creates a wonderfully inviting, cozy feel, with the beautiful ochre headboard, ceiling wallpaper ideas and flowing curtains creating an elegant, uplifting contrast in the space.
Elicyon says, ‘In 2024, I believe we are going to see an integration of vintage and contemporary design aesthetics to create one cohesive scheme throughout a room or home’.
From paint trends embracing a more heritage feel, to the surging popularity of upcycling second-hand finds and decorating with vintage and antiques, styling your bedroom with a mix of the old and new will create a more eclectic and unique scheme that celebrates styles of the past with designs of the present.
British Interior Designer, Matthew Williamson also supports this and says, ‘as we venture into 2024, I imagine we will see a resurgence of antique sourcing, reclaiming, restoring and upcycling. My favorite interiors to work on are those which don’t necessarily start from scratch or have a huge budget but those which have been designed with all these aspects in play. Considering what you have already and seeing it reworked in a different way can be so rewarding, more personal, and just as effective.’
From a statement antique dresser, to more traditional patterns used across upholstery and wallpaper ideas combined with vibrant, modern paint ideas, exploring more than one style or design influence will make for a more diverse and characterful bedroom space.
accent color, to enhancing a space with eye-catching print and pattern, layering different styles and sizes of cushion will continue to be an enduring bedroom trend throughout 2024.
Brad Ramsey, principal and founder of Brad Ramsey Interiors says, ‘In 2024, expect to see layered collections of mismatched pillows used to style beds. As well as larger anchor pillows, smaller designs that feature beautiful patterns are also on trend for 2024 bedroom trends.’

The Citizenry share with us, ‘according to our data, our top trending materials of 2022 were all natural. High-quality sustainable woods including hinoki cypress from Japan and granadillo or mahogany from Guatemala. Textured, natural materials also had peaked interest including hand-braided palm baskets and rattan and wicker furniture. We see these materials continuing to uptrend into 2023 with an addition of bold marble and unique statement stone that nods to traditional European influences.’
From the timeless use of wood, to locally handmade textiles and pre-loved furniture, there are many steps we can take in our homes to create spaces that are long-lasting and environment-friendly.
5. Statement wallpapers are here to stay
Bedroom wallpaper ideas are a popular choice for many; enriching a space with beautiful color, pattern and eye-catching visual interest, and it seems for 2024, the bigger and bolder, the better.
‘We’re going to see wonderfully whimsical and immersive wallpapers transform rooms into escapist sanctuaries filled with mountains, temples, clouds and dense foliage,’ says Ed O’Donnell, co-founder of Angel O’Donnell.
We are also starting to see the rise of more unique, textured wallpapers in the home, establishing a heightened, tactile effect, ideal for creating an enhanced feeling of comfort and texture in a bedroom.
O’Donnell goes on to say, ‘densely patterned wallpapers and fabrics, nubbly wools, brushed fringes – textures will abound in 2024. Anything that beckons us to reach out and touch it, that feels good against our skin, will be top of our list.’
main bedroom in 2024 then blue – in all its variations – could be the solution.
In our round-up of the 2024’s Colors of the Year from some of our favorite paint brands, beautiful blue shades dominated the selection for upcoming paint trends, so expect to see a big rise in blue bedroom ideas across the home in 2024.
7. Layer your bedroom to perfection
Bedroom trends in 2024 are all about layering – whether that’s tonal variations of color on different surfaces, a mix of patterns that playfully explore a particular palette or a dynamic blend of textures. Two or three variations of each is enough to develop a richly pleasing space that is the last thing you see at night and the first thing the next day.
8. Supersize your headboard
Grand, super-sized headboard ideas have been a thing for a while now but the style is evolving for 2024. Colorful matt patterns have replaced glossy monotonal textures and shapes have become more complex. The rectangle has been superseded by curves and free-form asymmetrical pieces that are almost pieces of art in their own right. Find an upholsterer with headboard experience and discuss your ideas for shapes, sizes and fabrics before you make the order.
‘With the rise of the boutique hotel and its trending look in residential design, the headboard has become a brilliant focal point in bedroom decor. Look to the Firmdale Hotels for inspiration on using brave color and pattern, and have fun coordinating your headboard with a wallpaper or throw. Don’t be afraid to choose a more outlandish style, as this only adds more character,’ says designer, Martin Waller from Andrew Martin.
decorating with art will always win in helping to make a room feel fully finished and more personal. A favorite artwork can be a classic starting point for a bedroom scheme. Make this your color cue – experiment with the colors used, select two or three, then take it from there.
As well as beautiful artworks, accessories such as houseplants, decorative ornaments, books and magazines can work wonderfully to bring a sense of personality to a bedroom.
10. Have confidence when it comes to color
Getting the color right in a bedroom can be a tricky business. Even with all their experience, it can take time for professionals to make a decision. There is a lot to consider – the size and shape of the space, the available natural light and its direction, who it is for, etc.
However, many of us are becoming more confident with color trends in our spaces, moving away from simple, neutral palettes in favor of shades with more depth and personality. For 2024 bedroom trends, embrace shades that bring you joy and work in effortless harmony with your personal style.
Emma Deterding, founder and creative director of Kelling Designs says, ‘where previously muted, neutral bedrooms have been popular, we are now seeing a huge move away from minimalist bedroom schemes, with clients being more daring with design choices. From statement wallpaper and creative wall finishes, such as polished plaster, through to bold and colorful fabrics and bed linen, clients want to inject personality into their homes, and this is no different in the bedroom.’
11. Put bedroom lighting at the forefront
For bedroom lighting ideas, different levels and types of lighting are key to switching the mood from practical – getting ready for work, say – to soothing and relaxing – when reading before going to sleep, for example.
Lighting is also something that needs to be considered when choosing colors – the right lighting can transform a room from cold to warm in an instant.
Sarah Barker from Vanrenen GW Designs thinks about functionality as well as aesthetics when selecting the right lighting for a bedroom. ‘Lighting needs to be low and atmospheric but it is important to be able to read. I am not so keen on overhead lights in bedrooms so we often use small wall lights next to the bed for additional attractive light.’
When exploring bedroom lighting trends for this year, remember, a mix of layered lighting will always create a successful lighting scheme.
12. Bring the outside in
The natural world will always be a timeless influence on interior design, with green bedroom ideas remaining one of the most popular choices for homes of all ages and styles.
For a beautiful, indoor-outdoor natural bedroom scheme, complement shades of green with warming wood tones, and other natural materials such as wool and stone, or bring in beautiful floral and botanical motifs – and plenty of houseplants and flowers.
Interior designer, Peak Petersen, design principal at Hoedemaker Pfeiffer supports this and says, ‘earth tones will reign supreme in 2024, especially for bedroom trends. Soft greens, such as Farrow & Ball – Card Room Green, are perfect for a bedroom.’
Farrow & Ball, Joa Studholme says, ‘we have moved towards the warmer tones of nature, like deep reddish browns and terracotta, which are strong and subdued but achingly fashionable. Incredibly chic by day and cozy by night, they bring a grounded but luxurious atmosphere in a bedroom that is thought-provoking as well as soothing, particularly when paired with other hues found in the natural world.
‘We crave warm tones that will enrich our homes and create cozy sanctuaries away from the outside world. Luxurious colors like red can be added to the most neutral of palettes by using them in the rooms we use at the end of the day, when we most want to relax and be comforted.’
Natasha Bradley, Lick Home’s director of interior design and color psychologist also says, ‘we have seen a huge trend in colors that make your bedroom a calm and comforting space that you can come to after the working day. As more people look to finding a balance between work and home life. These restful colors include both blue and green, and will work with a larger palette of colors influenced by the beauty of the natural world.’
Recipes for Decorating and How to Decorate, it’s no surprise that Joa Studholme knows Farrow & Ball’s palette and finishes inside and out. Joa has been with the brand or over 25 years – in that time, she’s developed color ranges and consulted on design projects all over the world, as well as helping countless color consultancy customers to transform their homes.
luxury bedding for our homes.
We spend so much time in our beds – nearly half of are lives – so it is crucial to invest in the right bedding, ensuring that your body is supported and comfortable and you feel fully relaxed and cozy.
‘There’s definitely a move towards relaxed bedding and comfy sheets,’ says Gemma Gordon Duff from Gordon Duff & Linton. ‘Linen, organic bedding and chunky wool throws are hugely popular right now and add to that feeling of sanctuary.’
Is gray still in style for bedrooms in 2024?
Gray bedroom ideas are still incredibly popular, but as we spend more and more time in our home, we have started experimenting with warmer neutrals, especially in the bedroom.
According to designer Tiffany Duggan, gray has very much been and gone, ‘we love color and a fully gray palette has never really been our thing. We do love neutrals too but err towards warmer colors such as soft buttery whites, bones and plaster hued nudes. I think gray based greens and blues are lovely and a perfect foil to brighter more impactful patterns and colors but the cool, commercial grays of the last decade do seem to be fading in popularity.’
On the other hand, ‘decorating with gray will always be in style because there are so many easy gray tones to work with,’ says Natasha Bradley from Lick. ‘They allow you a base shade that you can then bring other shades such as greens and blues in too.
Choosing the right grays for your home is really important as you can end up falling into a trap where the gray hue you have chosen ends up making your home feel dull and lifeless. When in reality the right shade of gray can make a space feel warm and sophisticated. Choosing a gray hue with a warm undertone of soft green can bring character and color into your home.’
We explore, is gray still on trend, in a separate piece.
If you’ve been inspired by these bedroom trends but want to ensure that you incorporate them in the right way to create a truly enduring design, we explore how to create a timeless bedroom in our dedicated feature.

Manifestation practices—or rather, the routines and rituals you can use to turn your thoughts into reality—can luckily be done anywhere. But as someone who has a soft spot for interiors and is hyper-aware of her surroundings (I am a home and living writer after all!), I believe that your living space plays a crucial part in supporting your dreams. Whether you live in a tiny dorm room or your very own dream home, your environment can help keep you focused, calm, and positive—which is key to achieving your goals.
To learn more about the link between our homes and manifestation, I chatted with manifestation expert Haley Hoffman Smith, and her tips are sure to get your creative ideas flowing. If you’re ready to level up your living space, here’s how to make sure your home supports your ideal lifestyle and the best version of you.
1. Start with gratitude and appreciation.
“You can manifest anywhere at any time, and so much of it is about appreciating where you are,” Hoffman Smith said. Practicing gratitude for what you already have is a huge part of manifestation, and if you’re struggling with where to begin, start with the roof over your head. Even if you’re not living in your dream home (yet!), focus on the things you love about your current space and express your appreciation for them. Whether you simply look around your space and make mental notes or write your thoughts down in a journal, having gratitude for your current home will help you stay positive and uplifted.
Hoffman Smith, for instance, moved into her dream New York City apartment a few years ago, but before that, she was living in a modest home in Colorado. “I focused so much on what I appreciated in that home and the fact that I had a home and a front door and that it provided safety and comfort,” Hoffman Smith said. Focusing on the positive attributes of your surroundings will help you stay in a high vibrational state, or in a state of contentment and peace, which makes you a magnet for whatever it is that you desire. As Esther Hicks, another manifestation expert, famously says, “As you think, you vibrate. As you vibrate, you attract.”
2. Know what your vision is, and keep it in sight.
Vision boards are a go-to practice for manifestation. While you can easily use your vision board as a phone background or laptop wallpaper, strategically placing images and positive affirmations around your home is another sneaky way to keep your vision in front of you. Consider displaying reminders of your vision on your fridge, the bathroom mirror, or your coffee table. “What matters most is having them someplace where you’ll see them all the time,” Hoffman Smith said.
For example, Hoffman Smith decorated her coffee table with a book on the Amalfi Coast, one of her favorite travel destinations. “It’s nice to be able to flip it open to a page and have it be like a vision board on my coffee table,” she said. This is great advice if you have a dream destination you’d like to visit—in addition to a coffee table book, you could also frame pictures of places on your bucket list.
Other easy ways to keep your vision in sight include placing sticky notes with positive affirmations around your home or using everyday items that remind you of your dreams. Hoffman Smith also has a collection of coffee mugs that all reflect things that make her happy. If you’re trying to manifest something specific (like a new job or a dream vacation), find a mug that has a design or words that relate to that goal and can help you imagine that it’s already a reality.
3. Maximize the space you have by keeping it tidy.
A clean, clutter-free home can help you stay focused and at ease as you work toward your goals. Even if your current space is less than ideal, keeping it tidy will help make the most of the space so it can best support your dream lifestyle. If there’s a room in your home that feels off even after cleaning and organizing, however, Hoffman Smith recommends rearranging the furniture. “If you’re about to embark on a new chapter of your life, or if the energy is just stagnant, shifting around the placements of certain things can really help,” she said. Keep rearranging until your space feels right.
4. Fill your home with things you love.
Additionally, be sure your home includes items that reflect your desires and passions. Adding beauty, like flowers for your kitchen table or art that inspires you, can have a big effect on your mood and make you feel like you’re already living your best life. For Hoffman Smith, seasonal decor helps her add joy to her space. “Changing things up with the seasons can make it feel really cozy,” she said. Consider this your sign to light a candle or hang those twinkly lights if those things make you happy. At the end of the day, manifestation is about keeping your vibration high, so be sure to sprinkle items throughout your space that bring you joy, no matter how small.
5. Set up your home for your morning and nighttime routines.
“Manifesting really comes down to the routines we do, such as meditation, gratitude, and journaling,” Hoffman Smith said, “and having a space for each in your home can help it become a ritual that you get used to and can look forward to.” Whatever you want your morning and evening routines to look like, create a dedicated space that supports those activities. If you like to start each day by journaling while you sip your morning tea, place your journal and a pen near your tea kettle and mugs. If you want to meditate each night before bed, outfit your bedroom with soft lighting and a meditation pillow. Creating the space for the routine will make it that much easier to settle into the habit, Hoffman Smith said.
6. Prepare your space for your ideal lifestyle.
Even if you don’t feel like you’re living your dream life yet, you can prepare your space for those dreams to become a reality. Does your future self like to host dinner parties? Spruce up your dining area, tidy up your kitchen, and gather up a few recipes you’d like to prepare for friends or family. Does your future self have a consistent meditation practice? Create a cozy meditation corner with a floor cushion and a small table for candles or an essential oil diffuser. By creating space for your goals, you can prepare yourself for all of the abundance that is no doubt already on its way to you.

If you’re looking to buy a condo or townhome, understanding the distinctions may help you home in on the choice that better suits your lifestyle and needs. Read on to learn the major differences between these two kinds of property.
What Is a Condo?
A condominium is a private property within a larger property, whether that be a single building or a complex. Residents share amenities like clubhouses, gyms, pools, parking, and the common grounds, and pay homeowners association (HOA) dues to support those shared assets. If you buy a condo, you’ll own your interior space only.
What Is a Townhouse?
A townhouse is a single-family unit that shares one or more walls with another home, usually has two or more floors, and may have a small backyard or patio. If you buy a townhouse, you’ll own the interior and exterior of the unit and the land on which it sits. Upkeep of the exterior could be split between you and the homeowners association (HOA).
💡 Quick Tip: When house hunting, don’t forget to lock in your home mortgage loan rate so there are no surprises if your offer is accepted.
Condo vs Townhouse: Differences
Both are part of a larger structure, unlike some other house types, and both usually share one or more walls, but some similarities end there. Here are the key differences.
1. Construction
In the condo vs. townhouse debate, construction differs. A townhouse will share at least one wall with a property next door. A condo could have another unit below and above it, in addition to neighbors on either side. That could mean sharing all surrounding walls and floors/ceilings.
2. Actual Ownership
If you’re considering townhouse vs. condo, what would you actually own? With townhomes, the buyer owns the land and the structure. That could mean some creativity with decorating the lot or the home’s exterior. With condos, the buyer owns the interior of the unit and an “interest” (along with all of the other owners) in the common elements of the condominium project.
3. Community
With both condos and townhouses, residents will have fairly close contact with their neighbors. With shared walls and spaces, residents may have more social relationships with their community than they would with a single-family home. That means it’s important for buyers to research the community when condo shopping. Is the condo social? Does it plan a lot of events, or do people generally keep to themselves? Since there are many shared spaces, understanding how the community functions could directly affect living there.
If a townhome isn’t part of an HOA, living in the complex could feel similar to living in a single-family home. In that case, it could be up to the buyer to create a sense of community.
4. Homeowners Associations
Condos come with an HOA, a resident-led board that collects ongoing fees that can range from $200 to thousands of dollars, and mandates any special assessments. The HOA also enforces its covenants, conditions, and restrictions (CC&Rs).
Not all townhouse communities have an HOA, but if they do, townhouse owners usually pay lower monthly fees than condo owners because they pay for much of their own upkeep.
5. Obligations and Regulations
What’s the difference between a townhouse and a condo when it comes to rules and regulations? Condo owners will be required to meet all HOA standards. That could dictate anything from what residents want to hang on their front door to whether they can have pets, how many, and whether Biff needs to be registered as a service animal or emotional support animal. If an owner wants to renovate their condo, they may have to get the work approved by the HOA.
If a townhome is part of an HOA, many of the above restrictions could apply. However, if it’s not an HOA community, townhouse owners have more freedom to decorate the exterior of their home or maintain their landscape as they see fit.
6. Insurance
Condos have their own form of property insurance. HO-6 provides coverage for the interior of a condo and the owner’s personal belongings. In addition, the entire building needs to be insured, which is paid for with HOA dues.
If a townhouse is part of an HOA community, each property requires HO-6 insurance and coverage for the community through HOA dues. When a townhouse isn’t part of an HOA, buyers are typically required to have homeowners insurance.
7. Fees and Expenses
HOA fees for condos are usually higher than for townhouses because they cover exterior maintenance and shared amenities. If townhouse owners are part of an HOA, they’ll usually pay lower monthly fees because they pay for much of their own upkeep.
Condo owners don’t have to worry about repairing the roof or replacing siding. Everything exterior-facing is managed collectively and paid for with HOA dues, but those fees may be high and are periodically reevaluated, and so may rise over time.
8. Financing
It can be harder to obtain financing for a condo than for a townhouse. Condos may be eligible for conventional mortgage loans and government-insured loans. (Study the mortgage basics to learn more about the difference between these types.) Lenders of conventional loans will review the financial health of an HOA, whether most of the units are owner-occupied, and ownership distribution. Interested in an FHA loan or a VA loan? Both agencies maintain respective lists of approved condos.
In the case of a townhouse, the financing process is similar to that of a traditional mortgage because a townhouse includes the land it’s built on. Its value is factored into the process.
9. Resale Value
A large factor in a condo holding value is the management, which isn’t always in the hands of the owner. Strong management can help a condo maintain or grow in value. Additionally, where the condo is located will influence resale value. Condos generally hold value but don’t see the boost in resale expected with single-family homes. Similarly, buying a townhouse may not usher in the appreciation of most single-family homes.
💡 Quick Tip: Your parents or grandparents probably got mortgages for 30 years. But these days, you can get them for 20, 15, or 10 years — and pay less interest over the life of the loan.
Condo vs Townhouse: Which May Be Right for You?
Condos and townhomes have their fair share of differences, as well as some similarities. Overall, condos can offer a low-maintenance property where owners simply look after their condo interior. With condo ownership comes the added perk of shared amenities. But condos come with monthly HOA fees, which must be factored into any purchase. Additionally, the community association and its management of the property will likely have a large impact on what life is like in a particular condo complex. Condo buyers may be more community-minded, as they share space with their neighbors. (If a condo feels like the right choice, read a guide to buying a condo as you embark on your search.)
Townhouses offer more freedom and privacy than condos. Owners may have the option of personalizing their exterior and enjoying outdoor space if the property has a patio or backyard. Townhomes generally require more responsibility and upkeep than a condo, even if there’s an HOA involved. Exterior maintenance will be required. If this sounds like a good fit, dig deeper by reading a guide to buying a townhouse.
Of course, you may be better suited to a different living situation altogether. House or condo? Take a quiz to learn which of these options might be best for you.
The Takeaway
When it comes to finding a home, the perfect fit is up to the individual, but buyers may want to take a hard look at monthly fees, community rules, how social they intend to be, and precisely what they own and must maintain.

FAQ
Between condos and townhouses, which is cheaper to buy?
The cost of a condo and townhome will vary based on location and size, but condos are often less expensive than townhouses because they come with no land.
Do you own the land around a condo if you buy it?
No. The purchase of a condo only includes the interior.
Is the resale value higher for a condo or townhouse?
In general, condos and townhomes don’t appreciate as quickly as single-family homes. The value will vary based on area, upkeep, and other conditions.
Between condos and townhouses, which has better financing options?
Financing a townhome is like financing a single-family home. A buyer can choose from multiple types of mortgages.
Financing a condo, on the other hand, involves a lender review of the community or inclusion on a list of approved condominium communities. Because a private lender could see a condo as a riskier purchase, the interest rate could be higher unless a large down payment was made.

2023 has seen some wonderful decorative trends. With the evolution of the ‘Minimaluxe’ movement came a wave of beautiful decorative pieces; in the world of decorative lighting, we’ve seen a renaissance, and we’ve embraced a whole new range of textures and materials. It’s been a great year for decor, so it’s no wonder the interior designers have been doing some serious shopping.
We’ve all got a favorite home purchase of 2023 (mine is my pair of wall sconces that sit above my bed), but the tastemakers’ purchases are really telling of what interior design trends have made an impact and what is here to stay. To find out, I caught up with three of my favorite designers to find out their favorite buys of 2023.
1. Fireplace accessories
If there is one major takeaway from 2023, it’s that we want our homes to be cozier than ever before. A key pillar for coziness is warmth and lighting, both of which are covered by open fires or log fires. Fireplaces have experienced a renaissance, and homeowners are enjoying the opportunity to decorate mantelpieces and purchase fireplace accessories that reinforce the cozy living room aesthetic.
Christoffer Du Rietz of Du Rietz Design.
‘Our new open fireplace was made in a Calacata marble we had saved for five years back and designed with some nice details to match the house. It came just in time for fireplace season. Apart from looking great, it helps a lot when lighting the fire, which is many times a week on cold winter days.’
Jumbo Wicker Log Basket
Log Holder
Wrought Iron Fireplace and Hearth Tool Set
For Melissa Warner Rothblum of Massucco Warner, this sculptured marble vanity box by west elm made a beautiful impact on her living room shelf. ‘I think this little box is so chic and is a lot of bang for the buck,’ she says. ‘It’s also perfect for tucking away keys on an entryway, remote controls, bedroom trinkets, or garage clickers.’
Chelsea Cement Box
Marble Vanity Box
Large Marble Box
Stoneware coffee cups that have that handpainted feel have proved popular, used as decor as well as for a functional kitchen necessity, while interior designer Corinne Mathern takes pride in the pair of glass espresso cups she has in her kitchen. ‘One of the best things I bought for under $50 this year was two vintage Art Deco glass espresso cups on a trip to Italy this year. They make my early morning coffee time with my husband really special and they’re so beautiful,’ she says.

How To: Decorate for the Holidays
How Do the Pros Create Holiday Magic? (Yes, You Can Try This at Home.)
Whether you’re a minimalist, a maximalist or agnostic about holiday decorating, these designers have some suggestions for you.
It’s that time of year again. The Thanksgiving leftovers are gone, and the December holidays beckon.
Yes, it’s time to decorate.
Whether that means running wild with ribbon and lights, breaking out the family heirlooms or bringing in greenery and flowering bulbs, there are few firm dos and don’ts. But the goal is always the same: creating a festive environment that makes you happy, whichever holidays traditions you observe.
To see how the professionals do it, we followed a few — Jung Lee, an event designer; Elizabeth Roberts, an architect; and Peter Pennoyer, an architect, and his wife, Katie Ridder, an interior designer — as they prepared for a month of celebration.

A Minimalist, Creative Holiday
Elizabeth Roberts enjoys decorating for the holidays, but you won’t find much in the way of traditional Christmas decorations at this architect’s brownstone in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.
“I don’t typically go all out,” said Ms. Roberts, 54, who shares the home with her husband, Michael McKnight, 55, their son, Dean, 14, and a rescue dog, Ace. “We typically don’t have a tree here. Or, if we’re hosting Christmas, we’ll often get a tree just the day before, and it comes down right after that.”

(Spoiler alert: If you think you’re on Ms. Roberts’s holiday gift list this year, keep an eye on your mailbox.) “You start it at the beginning of December,” she said, “and by the end of December, it’s usually blooming.”

A Traditional Holiday as Homecoming
For years, Peter Pennoyer and Katie Ridder used the holidays as an opportunity to travel with their children, Jane, now 30, Tony, 28, and Gigi, 23.
That meant “we often wouldn’t have as beautiful a Christmas tree,” Mr. Pennoyer, 66, said. “I remember one year in Hawaii when we ended up with something from Home Depot that was pink and about 19 inches tall.”

Residential architecture has developed immensely over the years, with unique features helping homes stand out among the rest. Depending on your lifestyle and individual living habits, some features are more important than others. Walkout basements have grown in popularity due to their dual functionality of extra storage and space, offering renters a separate living space to use for whatever their heart desires.
When considering a rental property with this amenity, it’s important to understand what all it entails; how a walkout basement can enrich your life and some potential drawbacks associated with basement living.
What is a walkout basement?
Source: Housing Design Matters
A walkout basement is defined as a lower level of a home with a ground-level exit to the outdoor space. A walkout basement is unique in the sense that it features windows and doors along its wall, whereas other basement types aren’t nearly as open. Walkout basements are traditionally found on homes built on a slope or hill, due to the natural development of levels.
Understanding types of basements: What makes a walkout basement different?
Basements are typically defined in four categories; crawl space, cellar, daylight basement and walkout basement. As you move down the list, the amount of light and liveability in the basement increases, meaning a crawlspace has little to no light and liveable space and the walkout basement has the most.
Crawl spaces small underground spaces with exposed HVAC equipment or sewage piping, typically not used for anything but storage. Cellars are similar, with less functional use for the home itself and a little more liveable space. Cellars are mostly used for storage or small, single entertaining spaces. Both lack natural light and heating capabilities, making them more practical and useful spaces as opposed to being extra living-enhancing spaces.
Moving more into the light, daylight basements are not fully underground meaning more natural light and more liveable space. These basements are becoming more and more popular as the amount of usable space feels like an extra floor. Walkout basements have one major distinction from a daylight basement, an exit or an entrance from the home. Walkout basement house plans are only made with the ability to build arises due to the home location. Both of these basements provide great additional living space, making them a unique amenity and feature to consider when looking for your next home or making house plans.
Positives of a walkout basement
A finished basement, like a walkout basement, can considerably enhance your living space. Learn more about the possibilities of basement living.
Natural light and ventilation
Natural light and ventilation are huge benefits of a walkout basement. This creates a bright and open space that is versatile and open to multiple uses. With such light and openness, you can maximize your outdoor space as this basement serves as a continuation outside to your backyard.
Versatile living space
The options for a furnished basement are truly endless. Aside from storage potential, a furnished basement can serve as a versatile guest suite, complete with a bedroom, bathroom and sitting area, providing a comfortable retreat for visitors. For those who enjoy working from home, the basement can be converted into a spacious home office or a creative studio. The ability to create a space that caters to specific needs is a massive plus.
Outdoor access
For pet lovers, families and outdoor enthusiasts, the walkout basement just serves as an extension of your outdoor area. The basement offers a convenient entry point for pets to roam freely, families to enjoy outdoor activities and enthusiasts to take advantage of the simple transition from indoor comfort to the open air, whenever they please.
Drawbacks of a walkout basement
With so many opportunities, it’s difficult to see any downsides to a walkout basement. There are a few potential downsides depending on your personal preferences and living situation.
Less privacy
Due to the connection of the outdoor space to the basement, there’s a potential for decreased privacy. While this can easily be fixed for homeowners, renters won’t have the same luxury of making permanent changes that would offer more privacy like a fenced-in yard.
Increased security concerns
Another entrance and exit to the home can pose a security risk. It’s important to remember to lock walkout basement doors and windows like you would on the first floor. Renters can go as far as to install renter-friendly security systems when necessary as well.
Maintenance challenges
For those who enjoy low-maintenance living, walkout basements require some level of outdoor area upkeep. Since the outdoor area is exposed from the basement, this creates another place to decorate, clean and maintain. This could dually serve as a perk for entertainment lovers and landscape enthusiasts, though.
