Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are what the founding fathers hoped to bring to their fledgling nation when they signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
As we all take the day to celebrate the beginning of the path which led to the creation of the United States as we know it today, you might be surprised how money is factored into this holiday season.
Here’s a quick look at some of the most interesting financial facts about the Fourth of July.
What’s Ahead:
Americans officially adopted the dollar in 1785
Although the Declaration of Independence did not occur until 1776, the first American currency was introduced in 1775. At that point, the Continental Congress had decided to issue national paper money in an attempt to cover their military expenses.
Of course, the ruling country of Britain outlawed this original currency, but the rebels printed the money anyway throughout the Revolutionary War. This first paper note was taken out of circulation in 1780.
It wasn’t until 1785 that the United States officially adopted the dollar as its unit of currency.
Hot dog-eating contests bring home big cash prizes
The annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest takes place each year. The winner of this competition will take home $40,000.
Joey Chestnut holds the top spot after eating 75 hot dogs and buns in just 10 minutes. Although you may not be able to top that record, it is fairly likely that you will be eating hot dogs as a part of your celebrations. In fact, 150 million hot dogs are sold each year for the Fourth of July. These sales account for a whopping 19% of all hot dog sales for the year.
Americans spend more than $1 billion on beer
What’s more American than a cookout complete with hot dogs and beer?
On the Fourth of July, Americans spend $1 billion on beer.
Plus, U.S. consumers spend an additional $600 million on wine!
Americans also spend a total of $6.7 billion on cookouts to celebrate
According to a survey conducted by the Vacationer, 73.41% of Americans plan to attend a cookout to celebrate this year. That means almost 190 million people are planning to attend a cookout or BBQ.
Cookouts aren’t complete without the mass amounts of hot dogs and beer purchased by Americans each year. All in all, according to CNBC, Americans will spend approximately $6.7 billion on cookouts and related Fourth of July celebrations.
Most Americans traveling to celebrate plan to spend less than $500
The Fourth of July has been a historically busy travel weekend. After a strange summer of 2020, when just 14.72% of Americans traveled for the Fourth of July due to the pandemic, over 51% of Americans are planning to travel for 2021’s Fourth of July.
Of the travelers, most are planning to spend less than $500. With that, the festivities could take a bite out of your budget if you don’t plan ahead.
Americans spend $1 billion on fireworks
Fireworks may be the quintessential activity for a traditional Fourth of July celebration. After all, there is something special about seeing red, white, and blue explosions in the sky, but the experience doesn’t come cheap.
Each year, Americans spend around $1 billion on fireworks to mark the occasion. From small sparklers to major fireworks, you can find a wide range of options around the country.
Summary
Many will be celebrating this special holiday. And many will be stretching their budgets to accommodate their celebrations. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be a terribly expensive day for the average consumer. You can save a lot by turning the weekend into a staycation instead of traveling like most Americans.

Many people know Disney Cruise Line for its family-friendly cruises from North American home ports to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico and Alaska. But did you know that every summer, one Disney cruise ship makes its way across the Atlantic Ocean for a season in the Mediterranean?
Previously, Disney Magic was the lucky ship to cruise among the charming European ports, but in 2023, Disney Dream sailed to the Mediterranean for the first time. The ship will continue to take families to bucket-list-worthy destinations around Europe, including Italy, France, Greece and Norway, next summer, too.
If you’re thinking about taking a European cruise and wondering how to balance traveling with kids and venturing into historic cities, don’t panic. Here are five ways Disney is making the Europe cruise experience as simple and smooth as possible for families of all types.

Children can stay in the kids clubs while parents explore the ports
Long port days can be hard for parents who want to see the historic sites in Rome, visit wineries in Tuscany or enjoy a guided hike in Norway but fear their kids will get bored quickly or are too young to participate in some activities.
One of the biggest perks for families cruising with Disney Cruise Line is that kids can stay in the dedicated kids clubs on board the cruise ship while parents explore the various ports of call on their own. Parents can drop junior cruisers off at the clubs before getting off the ship and know that their children are being cared for by the counselors their kids have already met.
Even better, playtime in Disney Dream’s four youth activity spaces is included in the overall cost of the sailing. Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab are dedicated spaces for kids ages 3 to 12, where they can play games, do crafts or hang out with a good book while under the supervision of the counselors.

While you’re out enjoying the port, you can also be assured that Disney is taking care of your children’s rumbling tummies because the kids clubs provide meals inside the club during the day.

Older kids have their own shipboard spaces. Edge is Disney’s tween club for those ages 11 to 14, where guided activities, like video game competitions and dance parties, take place daily. Edge is located inside the faux forward funnel on Disney Dream, so it feels exclusive.
Teens ages 14 to 17 can enjoy Vibe, where they’ll learn how to make movies or watch them on the 103-inch TV. Disney Dream also has a private sundeck for teens, which is only accessible with a Vibe-coded room keycard. (Be sure to check in at Vibe on embarkation day to ensure your teen’s room key will allow them into the deck area.) Both Edge and Vibe have a free come-and-go policy, so kids can enjoy the spaces as they want without parents having to check them in or out.
No matter which club your kids hang out in, they will have plenty of fun, and parents can rest assured that if anything happens, the counselors know what to do. They have access to every phone number for Disney-led port excursions, so if your child has an emergency and the ship can’t reach you directly, Disney can call the tour operator.
If you are touring ports on your own, inform the counselors of your plans and give them your best contact information on embarkation day.
Disney Cruise Line offers both family-friendly and adults-only shore excursions
Disney’s shore excursions in Europe cater to all types of travelers and desired experiences with family-friendly and adults-only options.
Grown-ups who may be traveling without kids or have dropped their children off at the kids clubs can enjoy tours designated for cruisers ages 18 and older. The adults-only tours often move at a faster pace, so pack your walking shoes if you plan to do a heavy day of sightseeing, especially in cities like Rome or Athens.
Adults will find that excursions through Disney Cruise Line encompass a wide range of interests, from wine tastings and local food tours to venturing into historical sites. There are even some adventure sports like riding ATVs.
If traveling with young kids, book the tours labeled “for families” or “featuring exclusive youth activity” early since they fill up quickly.

Family tours are often less strenuous than the traditional or adults-only departures, allowing for little legs to keep up with the group. They feature longer breaks or time on your own, so kids can get a rest and perk up with a sweet treat, like gelato in Italy.
Tours labeled with the phrase “featuring exclusive youth activity” will include time for adults and kids to have separate activities. One of the options with this label is a tour of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, where kids learn how to make pizza at a local restaurant with the help of the Disney Cruise Line youth counselors while parents enjoy time on their own or on a guided tour. Everyone comes back together for lunch.
Booking shore excursions through Disney Cruise Line also guarantees that you won’t be left behind in a foreign city if your tour runs late getting back to the ship.
Casual dining options are plentiful after long days of sightseeing
After a long day sightseeing in port, the last thing your kids want to do is sit through a long dinner in one of Disney’s three main dining rooms. This means finding dinner elsewhere on the ship, which is easy thanks to Disney’s quick-service options on the pool decks.
Families can grab a quick bite from three “Cars”-themed service windows at Flo’s Cafe every evening. The menus here are packed with kid-friendly favorites, such as chicken tenders, burgers, salads, wraps, pizza and more. Flo’s also has sandwich specials that change daily, including tasty options like spicy fried chicken and pulled pork.
You can be in and out in 15 to 20 minutes and then have time to see the nighttime shows or get to bed early before another day of exploration in a new port.
Alternatively, families can order room service, which is included in the cost of your Disney Dream cruise. Room service can take a while to arrive if you, like hundreds of your shipmates, are ordering during peak dinner hours. However, the joy of eating dinner in your pajamas in a space where kids can squirm freely may be just what your family needs after a long day off the ship.

Pro-tip: If you’re a chicken wing connoisseur, Disney Cruise Line has some of the best wings at sea on its room service menu. They are crispy and juicy, served piping hot, and the buffalo sauce is spicy.
If your family wants to eat in the main dining room, and you’re on the early seating rotation, Disney offers some leniency on longer port days when tours tend to return to the ship late. A ship officer or dining team member will often be out on the pier announcing that the main dining rooms are still seating guests until a certain cut-off time. If your family can make it to your assigned dining room in time, you can enjoy a meal there.
Just know that if you miss a dinner show one night, there’s no second opportunity to see it again, even on longer sailings. So, if your family is set on seeing or participating in a certain dinner show, like “Animation Magic” – where you draw a figure on a special sheet of paper and it comes to life on screens around Animator’s Palate – you will want to ask your dining team which night that show is being performed.
The cruise ship is a familiar home base with plenty of Disney charm
Visiting new cities and towns can be as draining as it is exciting. Riding for hours in a bus and walking around all day in the warm European sun can wear out both adults and kids. Also, the stress of navigating different languages and unfamiliar cities can be unsettling if you’re not used to it. That’s why it’s nice to have a friendly home base for your travels on a Disney cruise ship.
One of the biggest perks to cruising, in general, is that you unpack once. You don’t need to deal with the hassle of packing up and swapping hotels mid-trip.
Upon returning to the ship each day, children can enter a familiar world where they have their stuff set up how they like in their cabin, they can interact with their favorite Disney characters, and they can join friends in the kids clubs to play games and swap stories about the day’s adventures. Parents can relax and not worry about where to eat dinner in a strange city.
Around the ship, families will find plenty of familiar Disney fun, so evenings are easy and carefree. Most nights, families can watch a live performance in the main Walt Disney Theater or catch a movie in the Buena Vista Theater, including newly released movies currently playing in theaters at home.

If your kids are into meeting characters, they are in for a treat. Mickey Mouse and all his pals will dress up in themed outfits for the various European ports of call and come to the ship’s public spaces for meet-and-greets.
The Disney princesses are also onboard to greet everyone and pose for photos. They also host tea parties, but parents be warned, the tea party is an added cost, and reservations fill up quickly.
Of course, no Disney cruise is complete without a deck party or two. On select Mediterranean sailings, fireworks will light up the sky over the Mediterranean Sea with Disney’s iconic Pirate Night deck party.

Extending your stay in Europe is a great way to take advantage of flying halfway around the world to get on a Disney cruise. Take the hassle out of planning what to do before or after your cruise by booking an Adventures by Disney guided tour.
Families with kids ages 5 and older are allowed to book, though Adventures by Disney does suggest that kids are at least 6 years old. Children under 5 are not permitted on these tours.
The tours take place in Barcelona, London and Rome, all of which have associated ports that Disney Cruise Line sails from throughout its European season. The guided tours include meals, hotel accommodations, transportation to and from the ship and tours of the major sites in each city.
Escapes in Barcelona are four days long. Families can enjoy a privately guided tour of La Sagrada Família cathedral and Parque Güell, plus time at the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona and the medieval abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat.
If your cruise departs from Civitavecchia, Italy, the Rome escape may be a fun add-on to your trip. The four-day tour includes a VIP Colosseum tour, a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, and plenty of time to explore the city on your own.
Families departing on Disney Cruise Line from Southampton, England, can book the London escape, which is only three days. The trip starts with a high-speed boat ride on the River Thames and dinner at a local pub. Other activities on the tour include a private viewing of the Crown Jewels, afternoon tea and a private tour of St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Bottom line
Whether you’re a cruise pro or sailing around Europe for the first time, Disney Cruise Line makes sailing the historic coastlines of Europe easy and fun for families.
The ship makes for a familiar home base, with plenty of activities for kids and adults. The cruise line’s shore excursions satisfy the interests of families exploring together while providing options for adults who need a more grownup experience in port. Just be sure to pack your walking shoes and a positive attitude!
Mortgage rates were near 7% last week but purchase applications were still able to pull out an 8% week-to-week gain. That was surprisingly strong, but as I have always stressed, context is critical. Purchase apps were coming off a four-week losing streak and even though those were mild week-to-week declines, it was still four weeks of weakness. The recent growth broke that streak, but demand is still low.
Active housing inventory grew while new listing data fell. Mortgage rates hardly budged last week, even with the Federal Reserve‘s announcement it was pausing rate hikes and CPI inflation reports.
Here’s a quick rundown of the last week:
Active inventory grew 8,041 weekly. I am still hoping for some weeks that show inventory growth between 11,000-16,000
Mortgage rates stayed in a tight range between 6.94%-6.98%
Purchase application data showed an 8% growth week to week
Purchase application data
Last week’s 8% week-to-week growth with rates near 7% was stronger than expected. But, last year we had the biggest waterfall collapse in purchase application data ever for a single year, and since Nov. 9, 2022, this data has been forming a bottom-end range.
This dynamic changed the housing market from one where home sales were crashing to one that is now stabilized. I explain how this happened in this recent podcast. As you can see in the chart below, the collapse of the purchase application data has stalled out, and if this didn’t happen, we would be having a different conversation about the housing market today.
Nov. 9 is a critical date because that’s when the housing market turned. Since that date, the purchase application data, after making some holiday adjustments, has had 18 positive and 11 negative prints. Year to date, we have had 11 positive and 11 negative prints.
The growth we saw from Nov. 9 to February was long enough to give us the only big existing home sales print we’ve had this year. In fact, after that, not much has been happening, so the sale ranges should stay between 4 million and 4.6 million this year. However, if we get more weakness in purchase apps, there is a chance that this data line goes below 4 million.
Existing home sales are coming up, but I don’t expect any big surprises in this week’s report. We cannot break over 4.6 million this year unless we get a long string of positive purchase application data, which would require lower mortgage rates. Last year, when mortgage rates fell from 7.37% to 5.99% for a few months, we had a string of positive purchase application data that facilitated that big home sales print. Imagine what the housing market would look like if rates stayed between 5.5%-6% for a year.
Weekly housing inventory
This year’s housing inventory theme has been a walking dead musical chorus of a zombie trying to escape a grave. Slow and steady and late! It took the longest time ever recorded in U.S. history to find the seasonal inventory bottom, which occurred on April 14, and it’s been a slow rise since then.
But, it’s still a rise! A normal housing market always has a spring inventory increase and then inventory fades in the fall and winter. While I wanted to see more inventory growth this year, I will take what I can.
Weekly inventory change (June 9-16): Inventory rose from 443,006 to 451,047
Same week last year (June 10-17): Inventory rose from 392,792 to 415,582
The inventory bottom for 2022 was 240,194
The peak for 2023 so far is 472,680
For context, active listings for this week in 2015 were 1,173,793
As you can see in the chart below, the inventory growth has been so slow that we are on the verge of showing some negative year-over-year inventory data. This happens with purchase application data being flat year to date. Of course, if we get some weakness in demand, then days on the market can grow and allow inventory to accumulate.
New listings data is another big story with housing inventory. Since the second half of 2022, it has been trending at all-time lows This trend has continued all year long, so we have limited new housing to work with.
Below are some numbers to compare the new listings data in recent years. As you can see, last year we were showing some year-over-year growth, but that’s not the case this year.
2023: 63,293
2022: 89,166
2021: 82,815
We only have a few weeks left before we will see the traditional new listings data decline and only a few months left before we see the traditional active listing supply decline. This week we will get the NAR existing home sales report, which will update that inventory data line, but total inventory levels are still historically low
NAR total Inventory levels:
Historically inventory is between 2-2.5 million
The peak in 2007 was a bit over 4 million
Currently we’re at 1.04 million
The 10-year yield and mortgage rates
We just had a surprisingly boring week with mortgage rates, considering we also had the CPI report and the Fed meeting. Not much happened last week with mortgage rates, as they stayed in a very tight range between 6.94%-6.98%.
However, the bond market had some exciting action that I should explain. First, the bond market didn’t react much to the CPI report; I wrote about the report itself here, which still shows the downtrend in the growth rate of inflation.
However, as I have noted in previous weekly tracker articles, we are having some tricky bond auction events since the debt ceiling action, which moved the markets last week. The market didn’t react too much to the Fed meeting, something I talked about on this podcast. With all those events happening last week, the chart below showed how the 10-year yield acted.
In my 2023 forecast, I wrote that if the economy stays firm, the 10-year yield range should be between 3.21% and 4.25%, equating tomortgage rates between 5.75% and 7.25%. As long as jobless claims trend below 323,000 on the four-week moving average., the labor market is staying firm, which means the economy is staying firm.
I have also stressed that the 10-year level between 3.37% and 3.42% would be hard to break lower. I call it the Gandalf line in the sand: “You shall not pass.” Yes, it might be corny, but I believed this level would be difficult to break under, and Gandalf had the right line for this bond market call.
So far in 2023, that line has held up, as the red line in the chart below shows. Mortgage rates have been in the range of 5.99%-7.14%. However, we do have some issues in the mortgage market.
Since the banking crisis started, the spreads between the 10-year yield and 30-year fixed mortgage rates have gotten worse, keeping mortgage rates higher than usual. As shown below, spreads made a noticeable turn when the banking crisis drama started and haven’t returned to the pre-drama trend. It will be a big positive for the housing market when this data line gets back to normal. However, until then, this has been a negative for the U.S. economy.
Another aspect of my 2023 forecast is that if jobless claims break over 323,000 on the four-week moving average, the 10-year yield could break under 3.21% and head toward 2.73%. Last week we didn’t have much movement here. However, as we can see below, the labor market, while still very healthy right now, isn’t as tight as it used to be.
From the St. Louis Fed: Initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits were little changed in the week ended June 10, at 262,000. The four-week moving average increased to 246,750
The week ahead: More housing data coming!
This week we have a series of housing data being released: Builder’s confidence, housing starts and the existing home sales report. Federal Reserve Chairmen Powell will also testify to Congress this week, which may produce fireworks. Of course, I am always mindful of the jobless claims data to see if we can spot more cracks in the labor market.
For housing starts, we want to see more completion of apartments because the best way to deal with inflation is always adding more supply, and we have a lot of 5 units under construction soon This is very key because without rent inflation taking off again, it’s impossible ever to have a repeat of the 1970s-style inflation.
So, let’s hope for some better housing completion data this week! The best news for mortgage rates is less inflation and the best way to deal with that is more supply.
Mikkel Eriksen, one of the two hitmakers behind the production and songwriting duo Stargate, is parting ways with his custom-designed equestrian estate.
Set in Pacific Palisades’ highly sought-after Sullivan Canyon neighborhood in Los Angeles, the music producer’s home oozes style and comfort — and looks like it’s been completely revamped prior to listing.
In fact, Eriksen has partnered with renowned Montalba Architects (the visionaries behind Nobu Hotels and Soho House) to breathe new life into the 1981-built home before bringing it to market. Now, it’s being offered for sale at $14,950,000 with Compass’ Cindy Ambuehl holding the listing.
If Eriksen’s name doesn’t sound all too familiar, the songs produced by Stargate over the years likely will.
Stargate, comprised of Mikkel Eriksen and Tor E. Hermanson, have produced or written songs for some of the biggest music artists in the world including Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez, Sam Smith, Mary J. Blige, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, Ne-Yo, Katy Perry, Coldplay, Whitney Houston, Chris Brown, Nas, and others.
Some of their biggest hits include Beyoncé’s Irreplaceable, Rihanna’s Rude Boy, and Katy Perry’s 2010 hit, Fireworks. And if that leaves you wondering how much house you can buy after making it big in the music industry, Mikkel Eriksen’s impressive equestrian estate might just give you an idea.
“Old Oak is a totally unique experience,” says listing agent Cindy Ambuehl. “There are few properties on huge lots with fully lit tennis courts. There are few properties with a complete wellness center with infrared sauna and cold plunge. There are few properties with an 8th deep large pool and spa. There are very few properties with character using only high end finishes and fixtures. Few homes have the perfect floor plan and abundance of light. There are very few properties that allow you to keep horses in your own backyard. No other property has all of the above.”

If Memorial Day 2023 was any indication, travelers should brace for big Fourth of July crowds at airports. On the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened roughly 2.7 million people at U.S. airports, the highest checkpoint volume thus far in 2023.
And summer travel is only just getting started. In 2019, the Friday before Memorial Day was the third-busiest day at U.S. airports for the entire year, losing only to the Sunday after Thanksgiving and the Sunday after July Fourth. This may indicate that airports could be even busier around Independence Day than Memorial Day weekend.
Making Fourth of July travel predictions is tricky this year because the holiday falls midweek, on a Tuesday. Some folks may take Monday off to enjoy a long weekend, while others may save their vacation time for a different holiday.
With that in mind, here’s some guidance around booking July Fourth weekend air travel and how you might be able to avoid the crowds (and potentially save money on airfare).
The best and worst days to fly July Fourth weekend
TSA collects data daily to capture the number of passengers screened at its U.S. checkpoints. NerdWallet analyzed the past four years of this data for the seven days before and after July Fourth.
In each of the past four years, the Friday before July Fourth was the busiest travel day ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. If that trend continues this year, travelers should expect U.S. airports to be especially full on Friday, June 30.
Are airports busy on July Fourth? The data shows the holiday is the least busy day to fly, with airport crowds averaging just 81% of what they are relative to the busiest travel day.
Based on an average of the past four years, here are the worst days to travel around July Fourth weekend, ranked from most to least crowded.
Pre-holiday:
Friday before.
Thursday before.
Monday before.
Post-holiday:
Sunday after.
Monday after.
Thursday after.
Instead, consider these options. Here’s what the data showed as the best days to travel over July Fourth, ranked from least to most crowded:
Pre-holiday:
Saturday before.
Tuesday before.
Sunday before.
Post-holiday:
Saturday after.
Friday after.
Wednesday after.
The smarter, cheaper Fourth of July travel itinerary
Based on recent historical trends, most people will kick off their Fourth of July weekend as early as possible, jetting off on Friday, June 30 — or even ducking out of the workweek early by departing on Thursday, June 29. Most travelers will likely maximize their weekends, waiting until Sunday, July 9, to fly home.
But following typical July Fourth holiday travel patterns could mean costs in terms of airfare and time spent waiting in line at the airport. Deviate from that schedule to find lighter crowds and perhaps better July Fourth flight deals, too.
Try these travel days instead:
Embrace Saturday travel: Rather than rush out from work on Friday afternoon to jump on a flight, relax at home that evening and depart Saturday morning instead. Simply shifting your trip by one day could likely result in going from one of the busiest to lightest travel days of the July Fourth travel period.
The same goes for traveling back home. While it can be tempting to extend your trip as long as possible before work starts on Monday, skip the Sunday flight and fly home on Saturday instead. Bonus: You’ll give yourself a day at home to rest and recover before you hit the next workweek (how responsible of you).
Fly on July Fourth: If you don’t mind traveling on the holiday, you’re looking at the single emptiest air travel day of the period.
Do one better by flying out early on the holiday. Travel booking app Hopper’s spring 2023 Flight Disruption Outlook found that flights that depart from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. are half as likely to be delayed versus flights with scheduled departure times after 9 a.m.
Plus, a morning flight improves your odds of catching the fireworks at your final destination.
Fly on Wednesday, July 5: Will July 5 be a busy travel day in 2023? Likely no. This year, July 5 falls on a Wednesday, one of the cheapest days to fly year-round. Plus, according to TSA’s data, July 5 has been a consistently light travel day. In 2019, July 5 was the lightest travel day for the week after the holiday (July 5 fell on a Friday that year).
Moreover, for U.S. domestic economy tickets in 2022, Wednesdays were about 22% lower than peak prices on Sundays, according to a NerdWallet analysis of Hopper data.
July Fourth travelers in 2023 can feel confident that a July 5 flight itinerary will afford them cheaper airfare plus less congested airport queues.
