Inside: Learn how to save 5000 in a year by following this step-by-step guide. You’ll be able to save money for your goals – retirement, vacation, or emergencies.
I started my $5,000 Savings Challenge on February 16th and haven’t missed a day since. I’ve already saved over $3,500 so far – can you beat that?
A savings challenge is just like any other contest or competition that is designed to get people motivated into saving more than what they normally would.
It works by setting short-term goals for yourself (such as opening one additional account per month), rewarding your progress with some kind of prize at the end (in this case, a $5,000 gift card), and tracking your progress with some kind of tool.
The average person spends $1,000 per year on fast food. If you can save that money by eating out less, you could put it towards your retirement fund or any other savings goal.
There is always a reason not to save money, but once you prove to yourself you can save money, that is a gamechanger.
In this post, find out how this $5000 saving challenge works as well as tips for setting goals that will work best for you.
Why Save $5000 in a Year
One of the most common questions I get is “How do you save so much money in a year?”. The number one reason people don’t save is that they think it’s impossible. The truth is, anything in life worth doing takes time and energy to achieve.
Typically when people think about saving money they think of it as a one-time event that would only save them $50-$100, which is not worth the time or effort.
But when you think about saving money as making a small change to your daily life that will lead to long-term savings, it’s a lot less intimidating.

Reasons to Save $5000 a Year:
I saved 5000 dollars in a year when I started to realize I was spending my money in ways that were frivolous and did not align with my long-term financial goals.
You can do the $5k saving challenge too!
You can fund any of the following by saving 5 grand a year:
You cannot afford to start saving now.
If you want to save more, then start looking at your saving percentage!
How to Save 5000 in a Year
This is how to save $5,000 in a year.
Saving $5,000 in a year is no small feat.
But if you’re feeling excited about what that could do for your future with just this one investment of time and money, you’re not alone.
No matter what your financial goals are, saving $5k in a year will help get you there faster and with less stress.
That’s why we are challenging you to the $5,000 savings challenge.
We want to help you save more and build your financial future.
1. Save a Flat Amount
Each month or week you will need to save the same amount.
This is the easiest way to save $5,000 in one year is by saving the same amount (e.g., $416.67) each month for 12 months.
If you are saving on a weekly basis, you will be saving $96.15 a week.
If you are saving on a bi-weekly basis, you will be saving $192.31 a week.
Monthly Amount Saved = $417
Semi-Monthly Amount Saved = $209
Weekly Amount Saved = $97
Bi-Weekly Amount Saved = $193
Knowing these amounts helps you to deduct these amounts straight from your paycheck into your saving account for the $5k savings challenge.
This is a great challenge for those who make 5000 a month.
2. Start Small and Save More
With this method, you will start saving a smaller amount of money and grow to save more each month.
By starting to save smaller amounts of money, you can find ways to become more frugal as you continue with the challenge. Also, this works well if you plan to make more money throughout the year.
You start by saving $120 and add an additional $50 to the previous month’s total.
Month 1 = $150
Month 2 = $200
Month 3 = $250
Month 4 = $300
Month 5 = $350
Month 6 = $400
Month 7 = $450
Month 8 = $500
Month 9 = $550
Month 10 = $600
Month 11 = $650
Month 12 = $700
At the end of one year, you will save $5,100!
The downfall to this challenge is things get more difficult. Thus, making you more likely to give up.
3. Start Big and Save Less
This will give you a buffer if something happens in your life.
You save more money upfront and then taper how much you save each month or week.
This method is preferable especially if you start with a no spend challenge.
You start by saving $600 and deduct $33 from the previous month’s total.
Month 1 = $600
Month 2 = $567
Month 3 = $534
Month 4 = $501
Month 5 = $468
Month 6 = $435
Month 7 = $402
Month 8 = $369
Month 9 = $336
Month 10 = $303
Month 11 = $270
Month 12 = $237
At the end of one year, you will save $5,022!
The upside to this challenge is you get the majority of saving completed in the first part of the year. Thus, you get a jump start on seeing progress and sticking to habits.
Savings Challenge Tracker
A savings challenge tracker is a tool that helps people with saving money.
It offers an interface to track various savings goals, such as retirement, education, and emergency funds.
These goals are set by the individual and can be changed at any time. The tool also offers a goal calculator, which allows users to predict how much they will need to save in order to meet a certain goal.
This is why you need a savings challenge tracker.

Do you want to learn how to get free money on Cash App?
Yes, you may be able to make or get free money on Cash App, and this can be an easy way to make extra money.
Cash App is a free app you can use on your phone to send, receive, and use money. It was started by Square, Inc. and works in the United States and the United Kingdom, and you can use it on both Android and iPhone devices. To use Cash App, you just link your debit card or bank account, and then, you can send money to friends or family by entering their Cash App username ($cashtag), phone number, or email. Think of it as an app similar to Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal.
Getting money in your Cash App account is great because it is just like cash – you can use it to buy and pay for things, and even just transfer money into your regular bank account.
And, yes, this is doable. I have made extra income over the years and have had plenty of opportunities to put it into my Cash App account. I also just recently paid someone via Cash App, so this is an app that I have personally used to both pay someone (for their side hustle!) and to make extra money with.
Best Ways To Get Free Money on Cash App
Below, you will see the different ways to get free cash on Cash App.
Here are my quick picks to get started with:
Cash App referral program
Sell stuff online and get paid through Cash App
Survey Junkie
PrizeRebel
Utilize ATM fee waivers
Cash Card Boosts
Find Cash App giveaways
1. Cash App referral program
If you want to know how to get free money on Cash App, try joining the Cash App Referral Program. This is one of the most popular ways to get free money on Cash App.
When you invite friends to join Cash App using your referral code, you can make money and they can get a sign-up bonus.
The referral amount can vary, but usually it is around $5. You will want to verify what the amount is (as well as the stipulations) as they can vary depending on the time of year. They don’t always have a referral bonus, but they do a lot of the time!
Here’s how it works:
Invite your friends – Use Cash App’s invite link to send to your friends to download the app.
Enter your referral code – Make sure your friends enter your referral code when they sign up for Cash App.
Link a new debit card or bank account – Your friends need to link a new debit card or bank account to their Cash App account.
Send $5 – Your friends need to send at least $5 within 14 days of entering your referral code to an account that is not linked to them.
Cash App makes it simple to share its benefits with others, and the referral program lets you earn free money easily. If it’s already an app that you like to use, then this can be a way to share the app you use with the people you know and make some extra money.
Cash App has this referral program to get new people to join and use their app. Plus, by requiring a person to send money in order to qualify for the sign-up bonus, new users are getting used to how the app actually works – which will possibly help turn them into long-term app users.
2. Sell stuff online and get paid through Cash App
Selling items online and in person is a smart way to declutter and earn extra money. Plus, Cash App is a convenient way to get paid for the items you sell.
I have sold a lot of things over the years, and getting paid in cash is, of course, very nice. Cash App makes this possible!
Here’s how to sell your stuff using Cash App:
Find things to sell – Look around your home for items you no longer need, like books, clothes, games, or electronics (like an old cell phone that you no longer use).
Think about where you will sell your items – Popular selling apps and sites like Craigslist, Facebook, or OfferUp make it easy to list your items.
List your items – Take clear photos and write a simple, honest description for each item. Set a fair price by checking similar items’ costs.
Mention Cash App – When talking with buyers, let them know you accept payments through Cash App. You can mention that it’s fast and convenient for both parties.
Stay safe – Be cautious when sharing your Cash App tag and only share it with trustworthy buyers. Of course, like when selling anything online, there can be a lot of scammers trying to waste your time.
3. Survey Junkie
Survey Junkie is a well-known website where you can make money by sharing your opinions through surveys.
If you complete three surveys each day on Survey Junkie, you can earn approximately $40 per month, which can be transferred to your Cash App account.

4. PrizeRebel
PrizeRebel is a website where you can earn reward points by answering surveys and watching short videos. Once you make enough points, you can exchange them for cash.
I personally just redeemed around $150 in points about two weeks ago, so I know this is a real way to get free cash!
PrizeRebel does not have an option for Cash App, but they do have an option to redeem your points for Venmo (among other options as well, such as ACH bank transfer, PayPal cash, and free gift cards), which is pretty close. You can transfer your money easily to Cash App from any of those options.
You can get a free $5 on Venmo for 500 points. This is similar to free Cash App money.
You can join PrizeRebel here.
5. Use their ATM fee waivers
Cash App has free ATM withdrawals as a great perk, so you can access your money without extra fees and keep more of your hard-earned cash.
If you receive paychecks of $300 or more directly into your Cash App each month, you qualify for waived ATM transaction fees. This means you won’t have to pay the usual $2.50 fee when using an in-network ATM, just for setting up your direct deposits.
If you use the ATM a lot, this can be an easy way to save money, and this is like free Cash App money.
6. Cash Card Boosts
Having a Cash App Card comes with a great benefit called Cash Card Boosts. Boosts work like instant coupons and instant discounts that give you discounts when you shop, helping you save money effortlessly.
Boosts can be for places like coffee shops and restaurants.
Here’s how to find and use Boosts on your Cash App card:

Older voters in the battleground state of Pennsylvania are poised to make their presence — and preferences — felt in the upcoming fall elections that will determine control of the White House, the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Chief on their minds are issues that include Social Security and aging in place.
This is according to a poll of voters within the state conducted by AARP Research, which tabulated survey data from voters ages 50 and older. The organization enlisted a “bipartisan polling team” from Fabrizio Ward (described as a Republican pollster) and Impact Research (described as Democratic) and got perspectives from roughly 1,400 voters across the state.
This included “a statewide representative sample of 600 likely voters, with an oversample of 470 likely voters 50-plus and an additional oversample of 328 Black likely voters 50-plus, between April 24–30, 2024,” AARP Research explained.
In addition to the insights into issues driving older voters’ preferences, AARP Research also found that “Pennsylvania voters 50 and older are the most committed age group for voting in the 2024 election and appear to be on track to be deciders” in the contest, according to the organization.
The top six issues isolated to voters 50 and older include Social Security (79%); Medicare (73%), aging in place (or “policies to help seniors live independently at home as they age, 68%); utility costs (67%) and housing (59%).
For those that named aging in place as a concern, 37% of respondents described it as “extremely important,” while 34% said it was “very important.” That’s only 2% to 3% lower than the split for the Medicare issue, according to the survey.
Sixty-three percent of older voters also said they were “very worried” about their own personal financial situation, with older women (69%) more concerned than older men (59%). Republican voters found themselves more worried (73%) about it than Democratic voters (51%).
In terms of candidate preferences, voters in Pennsylvania stated they are more likely to support former President Donald Trump over President Joe Biden on both a full ballot that includes certain third-party candidates (46% to 41%) and on a direct two-way ballot (49% to 45%).
“Trump is ahead in large part due to more consolidated support from Republicans than Biden is getting from Democrats, while Trump also has a slight edge with Independents,” the report explains. “There are large gender, race, education, and regional differences in [the] planned 2024 vote for president.”
According to research from Penn State Harrisburg released in 2017, “the elderly population’s (age 65 and over) growth occurred at [a] rate over 20 times that of the state’s general population — an increase by 16.3 percent from 2010 to 2017.”

Personally, I don’t really keep track of what I can earn extra points with – I just shop like I normally do and scan each and every receipt.
Fetch Rewards is one of my favorite ways to earn free gift cards as I don’t have to do much to get points. I just shop how I normally do, scan my receipt with my phone (I am literally just taking a picture of my receipt), and then I get points. You get points for every single grocery receipt too.

It’s easy to use, but surprisingly, many people do not know about this rewards program.
4. Upside
Upside is an app that will help you get cash back for your fuel purchases (yes, from when you go to the gas station!). With Upside, you can get around $150 per year in estimated cash back.
Plus, the first time you use the app, you can get a higher amount of cash back in order to get you used to the platform. For my first time using this app, I was able to get $0.74 back per gallon. I bought 12.62 gallons, which means I saved $9.33 all by just using this app for the first time.
Not all gas stations are included in the Upside app, but you can earn rewards by choosing from the listed stations within the app. There are several gas stations that qualify near me, so I’m sure there are some that you go to as well.
This app does require you to select the gas station in the Upside app before you actually pump the fuel into your car, so this is an important step.
Then, you earn rewards that can be redeemed for free Walmart gift cards.
You can sign up for Upside here.

You may be wondering how Fetch Rewards and Ibotta differ. They are very similar and I use both. For me, I use Fetch Rewards and Ibotta at the same time for the same receipts. It’s a way to get even more points for doing something very similar.
You can join Ibotta here.

Here are examples of the types of questions you might be asked in paid online surveys:
Frequency activities – “How often do you dine out each month?”

Feature preferences – “What specific features do you look for when buying [insert product]?”
Usage patterns – “How frequently do you use [insert service/product]?”
Income details – “What is your annual income?”
Lifestyle choices – “What activities do you enjoy during your free time?”
Recent purchases – “Have you bought any gadgets or home appliances recently? What did you choose and why?”
Research habits – “Do you research products before making a purchase?”

Media consumption – “How many hours per week do you spend watching TV or movies?”
These questions are straightforward and don’t require any special expertise to answer! Sometimes the answers are multiple-choice, and sometimes you will be asked to write a sentence or two.
The goal is to gather information about your needs and interests, which helps companies determine what products or services might appeal to you. Your feedback is helpful because it influences how companies develop and sell products.

What are some different short story genres?
Short stories can come in any genre and storytelling style. The most popular short story genres include mystery, science fiction (sci-fi), thrillers, fantasy, horror, adventure, historical fiction, romance, personal essays, speculative fiction, and drama. There are many more genres to include, and you can even mix different genres. You can even make money writing poems.

Short stories are by definition fiction pieces, and not non-fiction.
How much money can I make selling short stories? How much is a short story worth?
The amount of money you can make selling short stories depends on factors like the length of the story, the market, the publication, and the popularity of the short story.
You may earn as little as $25 for a short story, or you may be able to earn over $1,000 for a short story. For example, a short story in Reader’s Digest will most likely pay less than a short story in The New Yorker. Or, if you write and publish your own short story on Amazon that becomes popular, you may be able to earn thousands of dollars.
Do short stories sell on Amazon?
Short stories sell on Amazon through the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform. Many people choose to sell on KDP first because of the ease of getting started and publishing on KDP. Amazon KDP also has resources to help you publish short stories like helping create covers for your eBooks.
How do I sell my first short story?
The most important step to successfully sell your first short story is to create a high-quality and compelling story. The story needs to be engaging and free of grammatical errors (of course!). Once you’ve done this, you can choose online platforms, journals, or literary magazines you want to publish the short stories.
You must read the short story submission guidelines for each publication and make sure you pay attention to word counts and formatting requirements the platform is looking for.
You can sell your short story to different platforms. You may even want to try entering short story contests which often provide an opportunity for recognition, cash prizes, or publication opportunities. Market your short story on social media, your website, and other platforms to gain reach.
How many pages is a short story?

Are you interested in selling short stories for money?
I might get a little sentimental today. This is the 20th anniversary of my — well, really our — weekly column. In addition to feeling old, I also feel grateful.
It was actually slightly more than 20 years ago that I was living in Southern California, working as a freelance writer, when an editor from the Orange County Register called. The paper was launching a monthly regional magazine targeting owners of luxury homes — think Laguna and Newport Beach — and he wanted a column that would be the antidote to potentially pretentious content.
“So,” I said, “you want a column that is not about rich homeowners and their chichi architects and their museum-quality art collections and the exquisite homes they build on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific and how the whole experience was one giant lovefest, and they had money left over?”
“Right,” he confirmed, “a reality column.”
He’d found the right writer. At that point, I had built two homes from the ground up, had the debt and cortisol levels to prove it, and had an arsenal of frustrations.
Still disbelieving, I added, “You want me to write about the tile mason with the drinking problem, the neighbors who won’t speak to you because you’ve had an outhouse and a Dumpster parked in your front yard for three months, the dogs who got so fed up with the construction they ran away in search of a rescue, and about how the remodel took three times as long, cost three times as much, and you weren’t speaking to your spouse at the end?”
“Exactly,” he said. “Sprinkle in some advice. Be the girl next door who has the same problems as everyone else but is two steps ahead, because you’ve made the mistakes and know who to call.”
Eighteen months later, my then-husband and I moved from Southern California to Colorado — just one of my many moves. And soon, I had a syndicated column. That former editor congratulated me, then ominously added: “It’s great to have a weekly column, but one day, you are going to run out of ideas.”
Until then, a dry well hadn’t been on my worry list. I flashed back to when I was in kindergarten and got in trouble for talking too much in class. I wound up in the principal’s office with my mother to discuss “the problem.” When the principal asked why I talked so much, the answer was easy. “I just have so many important things to say,” I said, which was unintentionally hilarious.
So here we are 20 years and 1,040 columns later, and I still have things to say and no shortage of topics. Because I have never been able to see where home design stops and home life begins, my columns are about both. Here’s a brief look back at some of the moments we’ve been through together:
The calamities: You were there when my two custom seven-foot sofas arrived with the upholstery fabric inside out, when the back patio in our new Colorado home fell three feet into a sink hole, and when our rescue dog on his first night with us tested our commitment on the one-day-old living room carpet. (Who gets a new dog and new carpet on the same day?)
The many moves: You were there through 10 houses and nine moves, including the move to Florida, where I had a stint as a live-in home stager and moved six times in four years.
The life changes: You were there when I sent each of my children off to college, entering some sort of self-imposed dorm-decorating contest in which I was the sole contestant. You were there through my divorce and remarriage, the loss of two parents and the gain of three grown stepchildren.
The micro and macro: Together, we’ve covered the minor (how to choose drawer knobs and tea towels) and the major (the meaning of home and belonging and how to leave a meaningful legacy.
