Selling a home is an emotional event. You are leaving behind a house filled with memories and venturing off to someplace new. The people buying your home are excited to create their own memories in a home that you loved for so many years. Welcome them with a thoughtful gift that will leave a lasting impression.

Here are some ideas for gifts to leave for your home’s new owners.

  1. Personalized Key Rings: Mark this milestone in the new owners’ lives by giving them a special key ring. Engrave it with their initials, the date of the move, or even a special message from you. Not only is this thoughtful, but it’s a practical gift as well.
  1. Mailing labels and stationery: Personalized gifts go a long way. Create mailing labels with the owners’ names and new addresses; if you want to go the extra mile, create personalized stationery for them as well. Leave these paper gifts on the kitchen counter with a nice note to surprise the owners.
  1. Monogrammed Doormat: Doormats are something that may not be at the top of a new homeowner “to-buy” list. Give them a monogrammed one or one that fits well with the decor of the home. They will surely appreciate this gesture.
  1. Practical Items: If you’re skeptical about buying personalized gifts, stick to practical home items. Things like smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, unpacking supplies, or even a utensil organizer are useful to new homeowners. They’ll be so busy when they first move in, and these are essentials that they should have immediately.
  1. A Neighborhood Guide: Write a detailed list of your favorite places in the neighborhood. Mention your favorite restaurants, boutiques, gyms and more. They’ll love having your recommendations on hand when they start to explore!

All of these gestures are incredibly kind and memorable. It’s a nice way to welcome new people into the home and neighborhood you have loved for so long.

If you’re in tech in Utah, you probably already know Lehi. As the home of industry giants Adobe, Ancestry.com, Workfront, SirsiDynix, IM Flash and other large, small and up-and-coming firms, Lehi has grown from bedroom community to destination location for families looking to be in the center of the action.

Just south of Point of the Mountain, Lehi’s family-friendly lifestyle gives residents quick access to recreation, quaint restaurants, ample shopping and a perfect place to call home. Plus, its center-of-the-valley location means you’re never far from anything.

Considering a home in Lehi? Here’s what you’ll find.

Small town charm with top amenities

Lehi is growing— and fast— but it still retains the small town charm that drew families to it in the first place. Want a peek at what Lehi used to be? Take a drive by Lehi Roller Mills; if it seems familiar, that’s because this still-working mill was the set for the original Footloose. Just a few blocks down Lehi’s Main Street and pop into Paper Crush for a DIY custom day planner and other party supplies or grab a burger and old-fashioned shake at Porter’s.

If a wedding is in your future, Flowers on Main is your stop for fresh-cut beauties and handmade leis, which are great accompaniments to the custom dresses at Gowns by Pamela.

Family game night goes all out at Gamers’ Inn, where you can try games before you buy them or join in with a group to play your favorite board games. Sweeten the day with treats from Lehi Bakery, where the donuts are square, and cupcakes at the Little Cake and Dessert Shop.

If community events are more your style, attend Lehi’s annual Round-Up celebration and rodeo each June and mark your calendar for the carnival-style Foam Day in July. (Why the name? Because before the activities end, everything is covered in soapy foam.) And October wouldn’t be complete without a visit (or two!) to Cornbelly’s, where attendees can get lost in an old-fashioned corn maze —haunted or not—and test their punkin’ chunkin’ skills before settling in to make DIY s’mores.

Walkability/Drivability and Livability

Don’t work in Lehi? Not a problem. Your average commute will still only be 23 minutes, or you could hop on FrontRunner to take the train to Salt Lake, Provo, Ogden and points in-between.

When you return home, it’s a quick walk, drive or bike ride for a bite to eat. Depending on the direction you prefer, both Tsunami and Jimmy Johns are both highly accessible, thanks to the Murdock Canal Trail, a 17-mile paved trail that runs parallel to an unpaved equestrian trail, and connects seven communities in Utah County.

If your destination is a dream home with all of the modern amenities, Lehi is your place. Thanks to the tech corridor, most homes in Lehi were built since 2000 and have all of the amenities homeowners are looking for. Best part: home values in Lehi average $266,300 and climbing, which makes a home in Lehi a smart investment but still affordable. Check out the homes for sale in Lehi on Homie for current availability.

Get out and play, nature’s way

Flanked by Thanksgiving Point to the West and Mt. Timpanogos to the East, Lehi’s access to the great outdoors means you can play hard by day—regardless of your preferred activity.

Take in a round of golf at Thanksgiving Point’s championship course or Frisbee golf at Dry Creek Trail Park, the city’s first disc golf course. You can also run, bike or walk the 17 miles of the Murdock Canal Trail or cool off at the city pool.

For a high-flying adventure, Flight Park State Recreation Area, accessible from Minuteman Drive, has facilities to help you get your hand glider, paraglider and model airplanes in the air.

And for a quick reminder of Mother Nature’s brilliance, Mt. Timpanogos looms just 10 miles east, where you can tour the cave, go for a hike hiking or have a quiet picnic.

Indoor fun

Shopping anyone? Traverse Mountain’s diverse stores include something for everyone, whether your style is H&M, Michael Kors, Quicksilver or Coach. And there’s Cabela’s, where you’ll find everything you could possibly want to feel at home in the great outdoors.

Across the highway are the restaurants of Thanksgiving Point, including Harvest Restaurant, known for its locally-sourced ingredients and fresh take on lunch and dinner. Top off the day by visiting the Museum of Ancient Life or Museum of Natural Curiosity, and the requisite trip to the Ice Cream Shop for an old-fashioned float—with bubblegum ice cream, of course.

Nightlife for everyone

Don’t expect the carpet to roll up at sunset. Evenings are a great time to catch a box office favorites at the Megaplex. In summer, Sundays end with a serenade from some of the best local talent at Wines Park. Or catch a nightcap at Scorez Sports Bar or Buffalo Wild Wings, both prepped for late-night fun.

Want to find your place in Lehi?

If Lehi sounds like the perfect place for you to call home, the Homie team is here to help. You can start the process by browsing through the current homes for sale in Lehi and click “Schedule a Tour” whenever you’re ready to get a closer look. When the time is right, Homie will help you create an offer, answer questions and secure your financing—and Homie’s services for buyers are completely free. Sugar House, just 10 minutes south of downtown Salt Lake City, is a notably chic and effervescently cool neighborhood. The area is known for classic homes, walkable streets and thriving local businesses—including some of the state’s best local eateries, boutiques, and art galleries.

Thinking about house hunting in the area? Find out more about what living in Sugar House is like with our Homie Neighborhood Guide below.

FROM THE 1920’S TO TODAY

Sugar House is one of the oldest cities in the valley, and it has the charming 1920’s and 1930’s bungalow-style homes to prove it. The area blends old-world charm and modern convenience. Historic shops like Harmon’s Emigration Market, a centerpiece of the beloved 15th & 15th area has been around since the 40’s, and modern restaurants like Kimi’s Chop and Oyster House, Even Stevens, and Pho Thin create a mix of old and new.

Sugar House homes are known for unique architectural features like built-in shelving and arched doorways. Add mature tree-lined streets with independent shops nestled in-between, and you’ve got the makings for something really good.

FIND YOUR TRIBE

Sugar House is the hipster cousin to Salt Lake’s posh Avenues neighborhood and the younger version of adjacent Millcreek. The community features a blend of residents; from students attending the University of Utah or Westminster College to young families to long-time residents. The neighborhood is diverse and all walks of life are welcomed.

Homes vary significantly in price, but most homes are well above the state’s average median home price ($274,000). Popular areas are often list upwards of $500,000. Click here to search Homie’s current Sugar House listings.

MUST-KNOW AREAS

  • 15th & 15th: This area is a Sugar House staple. Only a few blocks in size, you’ll find seriously goodness eats here, with the likes of Tulie Bakery, Sea Salt, and Eggs in the City. It’s also home to local favorites, including King’s English Bookstore and 15th Street Gallery.

  • 21st South: The renovated 21st south area is a gorgeous mixed-use development area featuring new modern-style dwellings, a mix of big-box stores like Nordstrom Rack, Barnes & Noble, and Old Navy, and independent establishments like Details, Soup Kitchen, and Wasatch Brew Pub.

  • Sugar House Park: The area’s namesake park, Sugar House Park, draws sunbathers and dog-walkers in the summer and kids pulling sleds in the winter. This well-manicured public park features everything from a 2-mile running trail to open spaces and playgrounds to public-use picnic pavilions.

WALKABILITY & DRIVABILITY

Stroll from store to store. Have a cocktail at one restaurant and then walk down the street to enjoy dinner nearby. Get your fill of green from tree-lined streets, parks and a creek-side walking trail. Most neighborhoods are within a 10-15 minute walk to nearby grocery stores, and restaurants of all types and sizes.

If walking doesn’t appeal to you, the ease of public transit just might. The opening of the S Line, a new public rail that connects Sugar House to downtown Salt Lake City, makes the area extremely accessible.

And, if you want to hop in a car, the neighborhood has easy access to I-80 and I-215 and it’s only a 20-minute drive to any of Utah’s famed ski and snowboard resorts, including Park City Mountain Resort, Alta, Brighton, and Snowbird.

Big-city amenities, small-town comfort, and a quick commute to Salt Lake and Ogden can all be found in Davis County. If you’re looking to move into this cozy-chic area, we’ve got your guide!

Cities to Fall in Love With

Davis County is the state’s third-largest—home to Layton, Farmington, Bountiful, Kaysville, and Clearfield. There are also a few smaller communities including Fruit Heights, Sunset, Woods Cross, West Point, Syracuse, South Weber, Clinton, and Centerville. This diverse city has plenty to offer for everyone! From thrill seekers to history buffs, you’ll want to check out this northern attraction.

A History Worth Documenting

Davis County was founded back in 1850 and still pays homage to its roots in several places, whether you want to step back in time at Pioneer Village in Farmington or catch a history lesson at the Layton Heritage Museum, Bountiful Historical Museum, or The Whitaker in Centerville. The area is rich with learning opportunities and chances to learn more about your new neighborhood.

The Main Attraction

There are so many things to love about Davis County, but we have to say the thing we love the most is the family-centric feel.

Growing Together

Davis county has plenty to do for young families, and one of the biggest draws is the educational system. The Davis School District is a proud Best in State award holder. With over 50+ elementary schools and eight high schools, you’re sure to find the right fit for your children

After the K-12 years pass, there’s no need to go far for a post-secondary education. Weber State is nearby but so are Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah. If you’re looking for something a little different, Davis Technical College is a great option!

Eat Your Heart Out

No, really. There are tons of places to visit for foodies of all kinds. Got a sweet tooth? Check out Mrs. Cavanaugh’s Chocolates and Ice Cream. If you’re into local dinner fare, check out Arella Pizzeria, Pace’s Dairy Ann, or Holy Smokes BBQ. Feeling adventurous? Visit Argentine Corner or Fuji Sushi.

Lunch anyone? Two stops that cater solely to midday meals include the county’s top rated restaurant on Yelp, Vitos, and Beehive Bakery and Cafe in Bountiful. If you have artisan breads (or donuts and pastries) on your mind, Bunbasketand Parson’s Bakeryare sure to please.

It’s a Davis County Thing

Some things happen only once a year. In Davis County, these include the annual bison roundup on Antelope Island(fall), baby animals day at the USU Botanical Center in spring, and summer’s Davis county rodeo and fair. Opportunity doesn’t stop in mid-winter either. While some people choose to huddle close to a fireplace in their own home, it’s equally as cozy watching migrating bald eagles at Farmington Bay. Just be sure to bundle up.

Drive Easy

Davis County may be one of the LEAST out of the way places in the world. With most communities positioned on the I-15 corridor, it’s a quick trip to work from anywhere in Davis County, whether you work in Salt Lake, Ogden, or somewhere in between.

Hate to drive? You’ll be covered with FrontRunner, and its stations in Wood Cross, Layton, Clearfield, and Farmington. Stop for a morning beverage on your way at the very local World’s End Coffee.

On top of convenience, the Farmington UTA stop is right next to one of the most innovative shopping/transit communities in the area, Station Park. There you’ll find shops, restaurants, and office space, all walking distance of Frontrunner’s Farmington Park and Ride.

The Great Outdoors

Someone tell you to take a hike? There are literally more than 500 miles of trails in Davis County. Favorites include Antelope Island (the first-day hike on January 1is a chilly blast of fun for the new year!) and Adams Canyon Trail and waterfall—or even the trail system bordering the Legacy Highway.

Like all of the Wasatch Front, skiing is a short drive away for Davis County’s 300,000+ residents. Best bets on a crowded day: Snowbasinand Powder Mountain. Reach the pair by heading east on I-84.

Utah’s top amusement park, Lagoon, calls Farmington its home. While you won’t find rides running mid-winter, Lagoon has spring, fall and summer hours. Best bet for residents: Get a season pass that gets you in all season long. You’ll want to go more than once.

You can also play a round of golf at a number of challenging courses in the area, including Valley View Golf Course, Oakridge Country Club (current home of the Utah Championship), Glen Eagle Golf Club, or eight others. Find a complete list of Davis County courses here.

Fun Doesn’t Have a Bedtime

Time of day doesn’t matter—in Davis County, you’ll find opportunities to relax day or night. For example, schedule a time to visit a Sego Lilyspa or ramp up the action with the kids at Classic Fun Center in Layton. As the sun goes down, take in a live performance at Kaysville’s Hopebox Theater or a big-name, outdoor concert at the (Foreigner, Styx and Chicago can’t be wrong). You can also wrap up a busy day with a movie at one of the seven theaters in the area, followed by a bite to eat and a drink at Rooster’s in Layton—with some of the most unique micro-brewed beers in the state.

Want a community with a little of everything—arts, education, adventure, business, family-friendly and more? It may be time to check out Provo and Orem. As the heart and hub of Utah County, these two cities collectively hold plenty of surprises that are certain to delight would-be residents, even the ones who’ve never considered living in “Happy Valley” before.

Adventure

Want rugged mountain terrain and inspiring views? Provo and Orem are surrounded by them. From hiking on Y Mountain to the build-your-own-adventure wonderland that is Mt. Timpanogos, residents don’t look far for outdoor fun.

Bike the entire 16 miles of the Provo River Parkway Trail, a paved pathway running from Utah Lake to Vivian Park in Provo Canyon. Stop at Bridal Veil Falls to dip your toes in the icy cold water, too.

Train for the annual Utah Valley Marathon each June or any of a number of other competitive opportunities. For details on everything running, check in with the experts at Runner’s Corner in Orem.

Nordic and alpine skiing are accessible up Provo Canyon. Just turn left into Sundance Resort and stay for dinner in the Foundry Grill or the Tree Room, or grab a cocktail and live music at the Owl Bar. Rather be in the water? Fly-fishing and tubing are yours in Provo Canyon, just upstream from your next picnic in any of the five Provo Canyon parks. You can also launch your boat in Utah Lake—not a reservoir, it’s a real lake—or watch the Orem Owlz or other sports team at either of the local universities.

Where to live: For recreation just outside your door, look near Heather Lane and 8th North at the mouth of Provo Canyon, or venture further up into Sundance, Springdell or near Vivian Park.

Arts

Museums. Festivals. Concerts. Movies. Just say what you want and Provo and Orem supply the rest. Annual events include January’s Sundance Film Festival, where screenings are held daily at the screening room at Sundance Resort, and summer concerts and plays at the SCERA Center for the Arts.

UVU’s UCCU Event Center brings big-name concerts to the area throughout the year, or celebrate Independence Day (give or take a few days) at Stadium of Fire. Museums include the Museum of Art, B.F. Larsen Gallery, and Life Science Museum on the BYU campus and the Woodbury Art Museum at UVU.

Where to live: Fast-growing-but-quaint Vineyard, Utah, on the western side of Provo and Orem, offers newer homes, access to Utah Lake, and is a short drive from just about everything.

Education

Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University provide students here world-class educational opportunities.

The side benefit? Residents here get access to world-class libraries as well as scholarly events, including literary, philosophic and scientific; community education; and extracurricular activities. Provo’s nightlife–frequently in walking distance to BYU–caters to the college crowd with institutions like Fat Cats for bowling, billiards and arcade games, 7 Peaks Resort, where water fun rules, and Velour Live Music Gallery, an all-ages venue (no smoking or alcohol allowed) that has helped launched the careers of bands including the Neon Trees and the Fictionists.

Public primary and secondary schools benefit from their proximity to the two colleges and the diversity of each. Both the Alpine and Provo School Districts serve the area as do a number of specialized charter schools. Parents can expect access to dual-immersion programs, arts education, and unique opportunities for children to experience college-sponsored events and other activities.

Where to live: When close proximity to a university is at the top of your list, look near BYU, where you’ll find plenty of condos, smaller homes, and landscaped luxury for sale. Prefer something older or more eclectic? Downtown Provo is the answer, whether you’re looking for a home that’s fully remodeled or one ready for your creativity and TLC.

Business, retail and shopping

This family-friendly community is business-friendly, too. Provo and Orem have both helped spur the growth of tech industry giants including WordPerfect, Novell, Ancestry.com and Omniture over the years. Healthcare is also booming in the area, but so are small, niche businesses including Altra (running shoes), Amano (chocolate), Xlear, and Blendtec.

All of this means retail is endlessly accessible in Provo and Orem, from the traditional malls that flank the north and south ends of the community (University Mall and Provo Towne Center, respectively), to the boutique offerings at the Shops at Riverwoods. Also check out the dining options at the latter, including sushi at the Happy Sumo, Mexican food at Bajio, European-influenced fresh foods at La Jolla Groves, or a gooey caramel apple from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Rather eat in? Swing by Harmon’s on 8th North for gourmet goodies and local grocery fare.

Where to live: If shopping is your thing, invest in a condo by the Riverwoods or University Mall, or a home off Palisades Drive. Just west of the Riverwoods, the small community perched above the canyon offers fantastic views of both town and mountains and is within walking distance of both.

Yumville

Hungry? Got a sweet tooth? Dining options in Provo and Orem are far more diverse than most towns their size offer. Just be sure you save room for dessert. If cupcakes are your thing, try the Sweet Tooth Fairy where featured flavors change daily. Birthday celebrations go great with a cake from The Chocolate—pack it up for a picnic at Paul Ream Wilderness Park, or eat pizza at The Brick Oven before you stop for ice cream from the BYU creamery. You may also want to skip dinner entirely and dive right into dessert from Provo Bakery, Rockwell Ice Cream, or opt for gelato at  Zaza Melodia by University Mall.

Where to live: In Provo and Orem, whether you’re hoping for a home that smells like delicious baked goods from a nearby restaurant or you want to live somewhere that’s close enough to walk to dining options—and walk off some of the food on the way back home—you’re in good company. Great dining dots the town and public transportation from UTA makes everything accessible. So look anywhere. You’ll find comfortable homes fitting all budgets in neighborhoods bordered by Center Street and University Parkway in Orem. Also check the south end of Provo.

UPDATED FOR 2020

Thinking about making a move to the highly-sought-after city of Draper? We can’t blame you! The city is thriving and there’s so much to do. Here are a few highlights of Draper, UT, that make it such a great place to live.

A Heart of Black and White Spots

Draper started out as a small town called Draperville. It was originally a place where cows were brought to graze, and it grew steadily as more and more farm families moved in. This area has a foundation built by the pioneers, and you can see some of the heritage on display at the Draper Historical Society & Museum; a fun and free learning experience!

Big Land, Big Homes

True to its roots, there are still farms within the city. However, Draper has grown from its humble beginnings and you can find several luxury homes atop the hills. There used to be just 20 families in the area, but now almost 50k people live in Draper. It’s safe to say that Draper is popular!

The Main Attraction

There is one central road that runs the city, known locally as 123rd or, as you’ll find on Google Maps,12300 south. The main street is home to all the hottest new shops and restaurants. From sushi to steak and shoes to art supplies, there’s something for every diner and shopper in the fam. Don’t worry though, you’re never too far from farm life. You might even pass a llama or two on your way to lunch!

Outdoorsy

If you’re not a shop-til-you-drop kinda person, no worries. Draper has adventures galore. Parks, hiking trails, an amphitheater, and a community garden are all waiting for you to explore and enjoy.

Commuting Ain’t Nothing but a Thang

Even though Draper is its own city outside of Salt Lake, it’s still easy to commute where you need to go. The central location makes it easy to reach downtown SLC or Utah County in a variety of ways. If you’re heading south, there’s a new wide freeway that will getcha there fast (AKA the point of the mountain) or you can catch a UTA method of transport. If you’re trekking north, Front Runner, Trax, or I-15 will have you in Salt Lake in a beat.

Places Worth Going, Things Worth Doing

Though the city is in close proximity to other large cities, like SLC and Lehi, Draper offers plenty to do. Here are a few of the attractions that locals and visitors find fun for the whole fam.

A Place Worth Living

Start browsing homes in the beautiful city of Draper here. If you find one you love, just hit Schedule a Tour and a helpful Homie buyer’s agent will reach out to you to go and see it in person.
