There’s been a lot of talk about budgeting here at Get Rich Slowly. For instance, Kristin recently wrote about her adventures using the envelope system. I wrote about the reasons your budget might be failing. And, a variety of guest posters and staff writers have touched on the topic with articles like these:
How I kept to my budget and still have everything I want
Budgeting: The Most Important Thing You Can Do With Your Money
How to Build a Better Budget
When One Partner Won’t Budget
However, among the articles on budgeting systems and strategies, there has been very little written on using a zero-sum budget, which happens to be the budget that I use and love. So, I wanted to write about why I’m a zero-sum budget enthusiast, why I think they work so well, and how you can harness the power of the zero-sum budget for your own financial well-being.
Why Should You Use a Zero-Sum Budget?
In my opinion, a zero-sum budget is superior because it forces you to “spend” every dollar that you make. And, no, I don’t mean you should spend it on dinner at Outback or a weekly mani/pedi. Instead, you allocate all of your earnings into the different categories that your finances require. You don’t need an Excel spreadsheet or a complex software program to use a zero-sum budget. In fact, all you really need is a pen, paper, and the desire to begin budgeting for your benefit. So, how do you begin using a zero-sum budget?
Follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Determine how much you make Whether you’re paid hourly or salary, you need to figure out how much money you make on any given month. So, you need to ask yourself a few questions. For instance, “How many paydays fall within this month?” And, “How much will each paycheck be?” For salaried workers, this should be fairly easy. For those with a fluctuating income, it can be much more difficult. However, one of the easiest ways to make a zero-sum budget work for your family is to get all of your finances “one month ahead.” Easier said than done, I know. But, using that method, a fluctuating income won’t matter as much. Since you’re using this month’s income for next month’s bills, it will be much, much easier to plan.
Step 2: List your bills Once you determine how much money you’ll make this month, you need to figure out how much money you need to spend next month. Using pen and paper, write out all of your monthly bills, estimating bills that fluctuate, like utilities. You’ll also need to set a reasonable allowance for spending categories that you’re trying to keep under control (like groceries and gas). And, don’t forget about bills that are paid quarterly or seasonal expenses. The best way to make a zero-sum budget work is to include everything.
I’ll use a generic version of one of my old budgets as a real-life example:
Mortgage: $1,426
Electric: $200 (estimate)
Gas: $25 (estimate)
Groceries: $500
Daycare: $500
Internet: $35
Fuel/Miscellaneous: $200
Cell Phone: $55
Health Insurance: $377
Life insurance: $77.31 (paid quarterly)
Trash: $56.25 (paid quarterly)
Total: $3,451.56
Of course, everyone’s categories will be different. Obviously, you’ll need to include all of your bills including any debt payments that you make on a monthly basis. Make sure to list all of your bills (even the ones that you’re trying to forget!). Confronting them is the first step to making them disappear for good!
Step 3: Compare and contrast This is where it gets fun, I think, and why using a zero-sum budget can be life-changing for so many people. Once you see your monthly income and your monthly bills on paper, a clear picture of how much money is left over emerges. You might find that thousands of dollars are being spent on “wants” each month. And, you could use that knowledge to begin saving that money instead. Regardless, once you determine how much money is left over after you pay all of your required expenses, you can decide what to do with the rest.
If my husband and I earned a net income of $7,000 for the sample month, we would update our zero-sum budget to reflect the overage:
Mortgage: $1,426
Electric: $200 (estimate)
Gas: $25 (estimate)
Groceries: $500
Daycare: $500
Internet: $35
Fuel/Miscellaneous: $200
Cell Phone: $55
Health Insurance: $377
Life insurance: $77.31 (paid quarterly)
Trash: $56.25 (paid quarterly)
Short-term savings: $1,500
Long-term savings: $1,500
Vacation Fund: $548.44
Total: $7,000.00
But, what if nothing is left? If you’re spending every penny you earn, it’s probably time to reconsider that strategy. Start by making a list of things you could live without. Some possibilities include cable television, eating out, or excessive entertainment spending. And remember, everyone’s priorities will be different. Although I do just fine without cable television, I have no desire to feed my family on a bare-bones grocery budget. You may feel exactly the opposite. And, as J.D. so eloquently put it, you have to do what works for you, whatever that is.
Step 4: Spend all of your money on paper Once you determine your own excess cash flow, you can decide where that money will serve you best. For instance, if you’re still in debt, you can decide to pay X number of additional dollars toward those debts. Many people, including me, tackled their debts using the snowball method. Using this method, you focus on one debt at a time, paying over as much as you can until that debt is demolished. Then you can move on to the next.
Or, if you don’t have any debts to contend with, you can allocate all of your extra cash toward your savings or investments. Obviously, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can choose to tackle your debts and continue saving at the same time. It’s up to you. However, the key is to go ahead and transfer the money you have allocated to savings right away. That way it doesn’t get squandered on those dinners at Outback, weekly mani/pedis, or anything else.
Step 5: Track your spending If you have a preset spending limit for your zero-sum budget categories, you’ll need to check in periodically throughout the month to “see where you’re at.” I’ve found this to be particularly helpful when it comes to grocery and miscellaneous spending. I have a tendency, in fact, to completely blow through my grocery budget if I don’t watch myself. ($8 organic oregano, anyone?) So, to combat my grocery spending weakness, I usually check my spending about once a week. And for the most part, when it’s gone, it’s gone. This often means that we’re eating freezer food and leftovers by the end of the month, which seriously annoys my kids. But, it works!
Step 6: Make adjustments Your zero-sum budget may be an epic failure for the first few months. And, that’s OK. You’ll probably need to make some adjustments to get it just right. Maybe you need to add a little buffer to your grocery category. Or, add some wiggle room to the entertainment portion of your budget. Whatever it is, making adjustments shouldn’t be seen as a failure. In fact, it’s just part of the budgeting process.
One More Thing
Unless you want to have a specific budget category just for emergencies, an emergency fund is a crucial part of using a zero-sum budget. Having an adequate emergency fund means that a surprise car repair or medical bill won’t knock your entire financial plan off track. And, whenever you have to tap into your emergency fund, it’s important to replace the funds you use. You can do this by budgeting to add to your emergency fund in the following month (or months) until it’s back to its former glory.

It’s that time of year again. The joyous, magical time of giving and receiving!
What do I want for Christmas?
This is a question that you may find yourself asking this time of year.
It can be hard to ask someone what they would like as it feels kind of weird and embarrassing! Even worse, is actually telling someone exactly what you want.
Many times people are so caught up in their own lives, with work and school, and other things going on, that they don’t know what the best gift to give each other might be! The last thing anyone needs is more stress (or anxiety) around the holidays.
So, I have compiled a list of some ideas for what you might like as a gift this Christmas!
To kickstart this list, I asked around to my besties – both women and men what they really want for Christmas. This list is from real people!
Guaranteed you will find the perfect gift for that someone special on your list!
things I want for christmas
I hope this holiday gift guide helps give you some ideas for what to ask for this year!
Deep down, I want big things like travel, quiet time, health, and hanging out with my family. But, my family always wants ideas.
Regardless, if you have a big Christmas list or small one, here are great ideas for you.
What do I want on my Christmas list?
When it comes to Christmas lists, it can be tough to figure out what you actually want.
After all, there are so many things to choose from! But don’t worry, we’re here to help.
Consider the five-gift rule:
Something I Want
Something I Need
Something to Wear
Something to Read
Something to Do
Some great gift ideas for Christmas include clothes, books, movies, gift cards, and experiences like a trip or a concert. But remember: these are just suggestions! You should put whatever you want on your list–after all, it’s your Christmas present!
What Do I Want for Christmas?
Hey everyone, it’s that time of year again when we all start to think about what we want for Christmas.
Personally, I’ve been doing a lot of online shopping and have compiled a list of items that I would love to see under the tree on December 25th.
If you’re like me and still haven’t decided on what you want, don’t worry! I’ve got you covered with this ultimate holiday gift guide.
1. Headphones / AirPods
First up are headphones. There are a ton of different options when it comes to headphones, but I love my Apple AirPods I received a few years ago.
The price tags on most of their devices seem steep at first, but you can find some great entry-level ones that offer great quality.
I highly recommend quality headphones for your Christmas wish list.
2. Money
Money is a popular gift option because it offers a lot of flexibility. You can use it to buy anything you want, and it’s always appreciated. Some people find it difficult to ask for money or receive it as a gift, but with the right attitude, it can be a great way to show your loved ones that you care.
One way to give money as a gift is in a brainteaser box. This fun idea turns giving money into a game, and your friends and family will love trying to figure out how to open it.
However, before you can enjoy the benefits of being on the giving or receiving end of money, you need to have realistic expectations.
Money doesn’t buy happiness, and expecting too much from your loved ones can lead to disappointment.
If you’re feeling brave, why not ask for money this Christmas? It’s always better than expecting something expensive from your loved ones. Here are great money gift ideas.

Or if they’re into scrapbooking, find an album that allows them to add text and other elements to their photos.
Whatever option you choose, make sure the digital photo album is easy for your loved ones to use. The last thing you want is for them to be frustrated with trying to navigate through all of their photos!

What Christmas Gifts Do I Want?
Christmas is a time where we all get together with our loved ones and exchange gifts.
It’s always a lot of fun to see what everyone gets, but sometimes it can be difficult to come up with ideas for what to put on your wish list.
If you’re struggling to come up with some ideas, don’t worry we included plenty of gift ideas to help you out!
What to consider when buying a gift for someone?
When buying a gift for someone, it is important to consider their interests and what will make them happy. It is also important to think about the occasion and what type of gift will be appropriate. If you are not sure what to get someone, it is always a good idea to ask them what they would like.
Another option is to give a handmade gift. This could be anything from a cake or cookies to jewelry or a scarf. The advantage of this type of present is that it’s personal and made by you, which makes it extra special.
Finally, if you’re still stuck for ideas, why not give a gift card? This gives the person receiving the present the freedom to choose something they really want. It also means you don’t have to worry about getting the wrong thing!
When buying someone a Christmas gift, it’s important to put some thought into it and make sure it’s something they’ll really like.

I wanted to title this post, “Can you be The Interestings,” with my writer’s craft book group (we discuss books based on writing analytics rather than whether characters and stories are likable). The book’s main character is just ordinary, with an ordinary job and ordinary talents. But Jules has some extraordinary (“interesting”) friends, friends that she met long ago at a summer camp for the arts.
Because Jules hasn’t pursued her art as a career, and she probably wouldn’t have made a ton of money at it in any case, she often finds herself terribly envious of her friends that have; notably, her friends whose talents have made them a huge financial success. (The male half of the couple seems to be loosely modeled off Matt Groening; his animated series quickly becomes huge and he’s rich within months of winning a network deal.)
In one particularly ugly scene, the main character bemoans their recent transformation from regular struggling artists to fabulously wealthy, comparing her own pleasure at the great deal at the kebab place (“it comes with free salad AND flat bread!”) to their never, ever again needing to worry about such things. To how easy it is for them to pick up the check and how ridiculous it is for her to do so. How she can’t see them the same way any more and surely! Her friends will look down from their Tower of Rich and shake their heads at their poor friend, still walking up stairs in her apartment, still picking up her own dry cleaning. Her husband sympathizes for a while, but loses his temper at one point, saying something along the lines of, “we’re not boring people just because we’re not rich! Do you hate being married to ordinary me? Get a grip!”
Jules may be more extreme in her statements than most of us, but we probably all feel like that sometimes.
I have a few friends who, in the course of our relationship, have gone from ordinary middle-income to bona-fide rich. One of my dearest friends’ husbands sold his little company to a huge corporation. My brother, who has worked for Intel most of his adulthood, has been doing very well. He bought a new house a few months ago and when I visited, I was shocked to find it was kind of mansion-y. Another friend I met at a writing conference, I discovered after I’d been chatting for hours, had enough money to be an angel investor in independent films. The sort of conversations that start out, “I’ve been working on this novel,” (happens all the time in my life) and end, “I’ve been thinking of buying the movie rights to this famous author’s novel.” (Never happens.)
I found myself, like Jules, sometimes re-evaluating ordinary money conversations after I’d had them.
My friend who’d gone from middle-income to rich was used to hearing about my money woes. Not that I’d complain all the time, but I’d remark on how my husband and I were arguing over money, or say I couldn’t afford to go out to coffee, or worry about a freelance check that was overdue and oh my goodness I was broke until then. Now I’d start into those conversations and at some point remember that she could sympathize but not relate, any more.
My friend is a good enough friend that I know she still does sympathize, and luckily things have been better for me, finance-wise, in the past year so I rarely have the situation where I have to say “no” due to finances. She’s not the sort given to social extravagances, anyway; when we go out, it is to plays, coffee shops or small cafes where we order small meals. We’re absolutely OK.
But what about rich people in your family? Can you still relate to them?
I found my brother’s case a good lens through which to look at this rich/middling dichotomy. His young adulthood was challenging and, when he was a new dad, I know he did struggle with money a lot. I know there were arguments in his first you’ve blown your food budget for two weeks. Your friend gets you a very expensive gift for your birthday and then complains to you about how a third friend gave her something handmade — which was your best idea for a suitable gift in return.
Sometimes friendships can’t work out with such out-sized differences. But it’s likely those friendships were too shaky anyway; maybe even based on the wrong things. If friendships are based on your personal relationship and not your relationship to things, places, and entertainment, you can weather the wealth of a friend.

What are some traditions people have on Christmas day?
There are many different family Christmas traditions that people partake in.
Some common traditions include:
Counting down to Christmas
Doing crafts on December 25th
Exchanging gifts.
These traditions are often passed down from generation to generation and are a lot of fun for both children and adults.
Another popular tradition is saying “Merry Christmas” to one another. This usually happens when family members gather together to celebrate the holiday.
Families come from all over to spend time with each other on Christmas day, and the joyous atmosphere is something that can’t be replicated any other time of year.
What do people typically eat on Christmas day?
Christmas is a time when many people come together to celebrate. While the exact traditions may vary, there are some acts that remain the same. For example, many people will eat turkey, mashed potatoes, and cookies on Christmas day (source).
If you’re looking to give back to your local community this Christmas, consider donating to your local food bank. Many food banks are able to help those in need during the holiday season and beyond.

VA Home Loans Require No Down Payment, No Mortgage Insurance
VA home loans require zero down payment which significantly reduces out-of-pocket expenses. Qualified buyers can purchase a home costing up to $453,100 – or even higher with a VA jumbo loan – without a down payment.
Also, VA loans do not require mortgage insurance. A VA loan eliminates that cost, freeing up that money for other expenses.

VA Eligibility Service Requirements
There are several ways you may be eligible. General guidelines are that you have the following service history:
90 days in wartime while in active duty
181 days in peacetime while in active duty
2 years or the full time called if enlisted after 9/7/1980
You were separated from service due to a service-connected disability

Apply for and use your VA home loan here.
How Do I Know if I am Eligible?
The only way to be 100% sure that you are eligible to purchase a home with a VA loan is to receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA. There are two ways to obtain your COE:
Have your lender obtain your COE through VA’s eligibility website. Typically a loan officer can obtain your COE in just minutes, often without a DD-214 (if separated from service) and your Request for COE Form 26-1880, although sometimes these forms are needed. Calling a VA-approved lender is the quickest and easiest way to obtain your COE. Complete a short contact request form.
You can order your COE by visiting VA’s eBenefits website. This process may take longer.
If you are an unmarried spouse of a veteran who was killed in action, you may be eligible for VA financing. You will need to complete Form 26-1817.
What Do I Need before I Contact a VA Lender?
For your initial call or contact request to a VA lender, you don’t need any documentation. Most of the initial information the lender will ask about, you already know.
The lender will request your COE, so they will need your service history information. To get pre-approved, the VA loan officer will need information on your monthly income, the approximate amount in your checking and savings accounts, and a few other personal details. This is all part of the VA home loan qualification process. Our lenders are pre-screened and reputable, so your information is safe and secure.
Check rates and get started on your pre-approval here.
What Types of Properties can I buy?
The VA home loan allows you to buy many types of properties:
Single-family homes (non-connected)
Two- to Four-unit homes
Attached townhouses (VA approved projects only)
Condominiums (VA approved projects only)
Mobile Homes/Manufactured Homes (provided the home comes with land, is permanently affixed, and the structure is at least 20 feet wide and 700 square feet if a double-wide.)

Swedish death cleaning is the process of paring down your personal possessions in a thoughtful, intentional manner before your death, so your loved ones don’t have to. The term was popularized by the 2018 book “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning,” written by Margareta Magnusson, and later by a reality TV show based on the book.
As Magnusson writes, “It does not necessarily have to do with your age or death, but often does.”
The idea behind Swedish death cleaning
Maybe you spring clean every year. Perhaps you’ve recently decluttered your basement before a garage sale.
This cleaning is different.
It’s a thorough accounting of every possession you own, one by one. Yes, this even means facing that one bin filled to the brim with family photos and the filing cabinet stuffed with paperwork dating back to 1992.
The goal stretches beyond tidying up. It requires challenging yourself to let go of many possessions, including those with strong emotional connections. This doesn’t always mean throwing them away or donating them — it could mean finding them new homes with family and friends.
Swedish death cleaning can have a transformative quality and often serves as a transition to a new chapter of life. It might accompany downsizing homes or the death of a spouse. It’s also unavoidable. Death cleaning is a fate that awaits everyone’s belongings, according to Magnusson.
So, the choice you face is not whether death cleaning makes sense for you — it’s whether you’ll choose to face this inevitable task when you’re in a position of control, under a timeline and conditions of your choosing, or whether the job will be foisted upon your loved ones after you die. Either way, it’s coming.
If you delay, you might be forced into rushing through it. You may not have the energy to go through your things in the manner you’d prefer. And, if you delay too long, you risk having others making decisions about your things for you.

Benefits of Swedish death cleaning
Swedish death cleaning is likely to be difficult. It will probably take a lot of time. Encountering a lifetime of memories, good and bad, can be emotionally draining. Saying goodbye to some long-held objects that embody these memories is hard.
So why do it? Magnusson cites many reasons:
It can be liberating. Simplifying your life can bring a feeling of freedom to focus on something new.
You can avoid burdening others with the task. Death cleaning can be even more burdensome if you wait until the end of your life. And if you outright refuse to do it, you are essentially forcing your family and friends into eventually doing the same job for you. If you don’t want to organize your own things, why do you think they would want to?
It’s an opportunity to reflect. Though difficult, you’ll likely rediscover memories you have long forgotten. This can be a positive experience.
It can spark important end-of-life conversations with friends and family. These are conversations that they or you might otherwise avoid.
You can pass along helpful or important items. Giving a beloved object to a friend or family member can be a chance to recognize the importance of a relationship or pass on a family story or tradition. Something practical, like furniture or kitchenware, might have outgrown its use to you, but could be extremely helpful to someone just starting out.
Cleaning and estate planning
In practical terms, letting survivors sort through your belongings after you die can also make it more time-consuming to settle your estate. Even if you trim down your possessions now, you’ll still have things that require sorting through after your death. That’s where estate planning comes in. While the book doesn’t discuss the details of formal estate planning, it’s a logical extension of the philosophy behind Swedish death cleaning.
Suppose you have a will and appoint an executor, who is responsible for settling your estate. That person is generally tasked with selling your property, if you have any, which would likely require getting your house cleaned and belongings appraised. That could take months or even years if your home is filled with decades’ worth of items, and the cost of doing so would generally come out of your estate. Aside from being emotionally burdensome for survivors, the effort could also be a drain on your estate, and your heirs could be left with fewer assets, which might take them years to access.
Slimming down your possessions now and making your wishes clear for what remains can streamline this process.
How to start
Begin with the typical storage areas — basements and attics, for example. There’s a good chance you’ll find hastily stashed things that will be easy to part with. Culling clothes and furniture are other ways to make quick, visible progress.
Ask friends and family to assist. In addition to helping you go through boxes, they might discover things they’d gladly take off your hands.
Attach notes to objects or make piles as you go. This way, you can easily remember where it goes — to someone else, to a donation center, to a yard sale, etc.
Save the most emotional things for last. Be patient with yourself.
Cleaning and your finances
Swedish death cleaning is an all-encompassing endeavor, which means at some point you’ll need to review your finances. Magnusson says this can include tasks like writing a will or making a plan for usernames and passwords to your important digital accounts.
Organizing finances can be the most challenging part of the cleaning process — but it might be the part that will aid your executor and heirs the most. Here’s how to get started.
When you leave your job, you have several choices regarding your 401(k). These options for a 401(k) rollover are pretty much universal, meaning they apply to every 401(k) and to every job change situation. Your options are:
Cash the 401(k) Plan and Receive a Full Pay-Out
I’ve listed this option first because it has the most serious ramifications.
First, if you take a full payout, you will have to pay taxes on the plan — usually 20% off the top when you take the money out, and a 10% penalty when you file your taxes if you are below the age of 59-1/2.
Second, if you have no other retirement plan and you take a pay-out on your 401(k), then you now have no more retirement money. You must start again from the beginning, and this puts you behind.
If you take a full payout but then decide you shouldn’t have done so, there’s still hope. The IRS has provided the 60-day rollover rule, which allows you take the money you withdrew from your 401(k) and roll it into an IRA within 60 days. You still pay taxes at the time you take the money out of the 401(k), so it’s your responsibility to find the cash to bring the IRA contribution to the level of your 401(k) withdrawal. However, when you file your tax return, you get a credit for the taxes on the 401(k) and for the 10% penalty. (Documentation is required.)

Roll the Money to a New 401(k) Plan
This option generally has no negative ramifications. Simply take the money from your old 401(k) plan and move it to the 401(k) plan at your new job. The money moves from one account to the other. There are no taxes or penalties involved. Best of all, you keep all your retirement money and can now add to it in the new 401(k) plan.
However, if there is a waiting period until you can participate in your new employer’s 401(k) plan, be sure you can let your money sit in the old 401(k) for the required time frame. If you’re not allowed to do this, all is not lost. You have another option.
Roll the Money to an IRA
This option also usually has no negative ramifications. You can always take the money from your old 401(k) and roll it into an IRA. The transfer will occur without incurring taxes or penalties. Moreover, once the money moves into the IRA, you can continue to contribute to the IRA at your discretion. You’ll have more investment choices available, and the IRA will have fewer restrictions than your 401(k) plan.
You can also roll your 401(k) money into a Roth IRA, but you need to remember that a 401(k) plan is a pre-tax plan, and a Roth IRA is an after-tax plan. You will need to pay taxes if you move from a 401(k) to a Roth IRA, unless you are rolling after-tax money. Be sure to ask your 401(k) representative about this option for further details.

Leave the Money in the 401(k) Plan
This option has a few ramifications, but they aren’t serious. If you meet the minimum amount required to keep the money in your existing 401(k), then you can leave the money alone, perhaps giving you time to decide you decide what to do with it. Be sure you to find out what the minimum required amount is for your particular 401(k) plan. These minimums can range from $1000 to $5000. (Each plan is different.)
If you decide to leave the money in your existing 401(k), there are several things to consider. First, you will not be able to make additional contributions to the plan. Remember, a 401(k) is a payroll deducted plan; if you leave your job, there is no payroll from which to contribute. Second, you must keep tabs on the 401(k). The plan can change hands from one record keeper to another, and the onus is on you to track where the plan moves if this happens. Third, you typically cannot roll into a 401(k) plan if you are no longer working for the company. However, you will want to check the rules to see if this rule applies to your plan.
Conclusion
These are the choices for your 401(k) plan once you leave your current job. Be sure to research the options that apply to your situation. Remember that you are making a decision that will affect your retirement savings, affecting how much money you may have when you retire. Getting the facts will make this transition easier for you.

There’s always a lot of fuss this time a year about gift cards. Some people love them, and some people hate them. I’m sort of in the middle.
On the one hand, I continue to believe that anything a big company wants you to purchase is probably not in your best interest. That is, if a mega-corporation is all fired up to sell gift cards, you can bet they’re a profit center, which probably means they’re rigged against consumers.
On the other hand, gift cards are convenient. They’re easy to give, and they’re generally easy to use. There are many circumstances in which gift cards make great gifts.

I like to receive gift cards for certain stores. Over the past year, for example, I’ve accumulated $185 in Land’s End gift cards, and I wouldn’t be surprised to receive more this Christmas. I haven’t used any of them yet, though I’ve checked to be sure I’m not going to get dinged because of it. Sometime this spring, after my birthday, I’m going to have an on-line shopping spree — and it won’t cost me a dime.
Still, the critics have some valid complaints.
The Problems With Gift Cards
Last week, my cousin reminded me of a gift card that Kris and I gave him a couple years ago. “It was a nice gesture,” he said, “and I know you meant well, but it’s not anything I’ll ever use. It’s been sitting on the kitchen counter for two years, and will probably be sitting there two years from now.”
That’s one problem with gift cards — here are some others:
They expire. Some gift cards carry an expiration date. The recipient must use the card within a certain amount of time, or the card becomes unusable.
They have fees. Some gift cards — especially those issued by banks — carry fees for various events. Some even charge to use the card. (In August, Tim shared how a gift card from Bank of America carried fees for checking the balance.)
They can be difficult to use. Did you buy a CompUSA gift card for somebody this Christmas? Oops. CompUSA is going out of business — suddenly there’s a very real deadline to use that card. And what if you buy a gift card for somebody but the store doesn’t do business where the recipient lives? Not all gift cards are convenient.
They carry an obligation. When you give a tie to your father, there’s nothing else he has to do use the gift. But when you give a gift card, your father must go to the store to use it. This often means that he has to spend additional money to find something he likes. Gift cards can force the recipient to spend money on his own gift!
Because of the potential problems, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has issued a consumer alert on buying, giving, and using gift cards.
Using Gift Cards Wisely
Despite the naysayers, Americans love gift cards. They love to give them, and they love to receive them. According to the December 2007 issue of the Consumer Reports Money Advisor, last year gift cards were the second-most popular gift to give. They were also the gift that women most wanted to receive. (They were number three on the list for men.)
According to both FTC and Money Advisor, there are few simple steps that gift card recipients can take to minimize potential problems:
Read the terms and conditions when you receive the card so that you understand your rights.
Register your card if it instructs you to do so. This gives you protection if the card is lost or stolen.
Use the card as soon as possible. Unless you know that the card has no hidden fees or expiration date, make it a priority to use it. If you wait, you may be in for a nasty surprise.
Report problems either to the company that issued the card, or to the Federal Trade Commission, whichever is appropriate for your circumstance.

The FTC also notes:
If your card expires before you’ve had a chance to use it or exhaust its value, contact the issuer. They may extend the date, although they may charge a fee to do it. Some merchants have stopped charging inactivity fees or imposing expiration dates, so it pays to check with the issuer to make sure you’ve got the most up-to-date information.
When giving gift cards, always include a copy of the receipt. Some card issuers require a receipt to replace a lost or stolen card. Also, do your best to research possible hidden fees or other nuisances (such as expiration dates).

Blogger Lazy Man recently explained why he buys gift cards. He thinks it’s more acceptable to give a gift card than money, likes that recipients can pick their own gifts, and is happy that he can save a little cash when buying them. Jim at Blueprint for Financial Prosperity, on the other hand, doesn’t like them. Finally, Liz Pulliam Weston says that gift cards are not gifts.
Don’t you just love your home appliances when they’re brand new? When they still retain that spotless shine, with no dents, scratches or signs of use?
While new appliances can do wonders in updating your kitchen, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should be considering replacing your old ones quite yet.
Especially if all you’ve got are a few dents in your home appliances — that can easily be fixed, at home, with minimum costs. How’s that for a quick kitchen upgrade?
To remove dents from home appliances, there are quite a few DIY dent removal tools that are inexpensive and fairly easy to use.
To make your research easier, we’ve rounded up some of the best types to choose from. And the best part: they’ll come in handy the next time you get a dent in your car, saving you some serious $$$ along the way.
The best tools to removedents from your home appliances
Suction puller
This is considered one of the most effective tools to remove dents from home appliances (as well as car dents). This tool basically works just as well on plastic as on metal bodies.
The cups of this tool are basically constructed out of plastic or rubber. Total pressure created by a cup can go more than 120 pounds thus they can easily remove even greater dents from your car.
The suction puller has an ergonomically designed handle with which you can effectively pull out even a serious, deep dent. In most of the cases, the handle is made up of carbon fiber and can easily bear a lot of pressure. Moreover, the size of the cup usually ranges from 2 to 6 inches in diameter, considered ideal for every other type of dent.
Glue pull
This tool basically uses high-quality glue which is placed on one end of a sophisticated tool or a suction cup, with the cup then being placed over the dent and pulled with force to remove the dent.
Through the glue pull, you can effectively remove the dent from a car without even causing any harm to the outer body paint of your car.
When you use this tool, there is no need to spend money on repainting your car.
The gun basically produces melted glue which sticks to the surface easily, but doesn’t prompt any corrosive reaction.
Dent pushing tool
This is another tool which is very effective as you will get to push the dent from behind by using various types of rods.
One has to use different types of rods depending on the size of the dent and the place where it has occurred. This tool is considered most cost-effective in nature but requires greater manual work — especially compared to the suction pull.
Most of the rods are manufactured either from stainless steel or with aluminum, which makes them very durable and rust proof.
These rods have different types of lengths ranging from 15 to 35 inches and sizes, making it the perfect choice for dented parts that are a little harder to reach.

Last year, I was talking with a friend right after she had returned from a relaxing week in the Caribbean. “We did an all-inclusive,” she said to me with a glimmer in her eyes. “A what?” I had no idea what she was talking about. After chatting about it for a quite a while, she clued me in on how an all-inclusive vacation works and what some of the perks were. To say I was intrigued would be an epic understatement. According to my friend, she could travel to any all-inclusive vacation spot in the Caribbean or Mexico and have almost everything included in one low price. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing; my friend and her husband had paid only $700 per person for an entire week at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun. Not only were their flights and lodging included in her cost, but all of their food and drinks (even alcohol) were included as well. She seemed downright enthusiastic about their experience and went on and on about how amazing the whole thing was. I had to find out more.
To satisfy my curiosity, I started playing around with dates and locations on travel sites like Expedia and Travelocity. What I found out was a complete jolt to my system: all-inclusive vacations were cheap. Dirt cheap. Since I love to travel and hate to spend money, I started to wonder if I should go on an all-inclusive vacation myself. My husband and I had been putting off a honeymoon for nearly seven years at that point, mostly due to being stingy with our cash. Could an all-inclusive vacation provide the answer?
Our First All-Inclusive
Once I showed my husband my research, he quickly got on board. Of course. Why wouldn’t he want to travel to a tropical beach and enjoy unlimited food and drinks all day and night? We bounced back and forth between several locations. I initially had my heart set on going to Aruba. However, my enthusiasm waned as the price crept slowly upward with each passing week. Then it was Club Med in Turks and Caicos. Then Jamaica. Then Mexico. We ultimately chose to do our first all-inclusive vacation in the Dominican Republic. When all was said and done, we paid less than $1000 per person including airfare to spend 7 days and 6 nights at an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana.
The hotel’s website made it look too good to be true — with tropical beaches and lush landscaping, live entertainment, and six restaurants and seven bars at our disposal. As our vacation date approached, I started to wonder if the resort could possibly deliver what it promised for the price we paid. Regardless, I decided to go with an open mind and low expectations. Even if it was awful, I would still get a kid-free week with my husband and the honeymoon that we never had. “I’m going to have a good time no matter what,” I told my husband as we boarded the plane.
All worries were completely dashed from my mind when we arrived at the resort. It definitely delivered what it promised –and then some. I nearly cried when I saw the pristine beaches and absolute beauty of the area where we would be staying. It was then and there that I totally understood why my friend had promised that “once you go all-inclusive, you never go back.” It finally made sense.
The Pros of an All-Inclusive Vacation
Most all-inclusive resorts are located on beaches in Mexico and in the various islands scattered throughout the Caribbean. However, some all-inclusive resort chains like Club Med offer all-inclusive vacations in varying landscapes all over the world. Regardless, the general premise for all-inclusive resorts is the same: they offer lodging, entertainment, and all food and drinks for one low price. It is also possible to book a package including airfare which can trigger an additional discount.
The benefits of choosing an all-inclusive vacation are too numerous to count. First, they take the guessing game out of the cost of your vacation by letting you pay for all of your meals up front. Second, aside from the cost of transportation to your resort and some money to tip the staff, you may not need to fork over any cash during your trip at all. Every all-inclusive resort is different, but some offer live entertainment, live music, and high-quality shows on the premises. Others include some activities in the cost of your trip, such as zumba classes, water aerobics, kayaking, boogie boarding, and board games.
All-inclusive trips are also incredibly easy to plan. Aside from selecting a resort, choosing flights, and arranging for transportation, very little else needs to be done. Once you arrive at the resort, you also don’t have to worry about how to get from one place to another or where you’re going to eat. Everything has already been thought of and is ready and waiting upon your arrival.
The Cons of an All-Inclusive Vacation
Although an all-inclusive vacation can get you a lot of bang for your buck, it doesn’t really allow you to immerse yourself in the local culture and customs of the country you’re visiting. If all you do is plop yourself down on a tropical beach with a drink in hand, you may not get to experience much of what the country has to offer. However, staying at an all-inclusive resort shouldn’t hold you back from experiencing some local culture. Most resorts offer excursions by trained guides who will take you off of the resort to visit some of the local attractions. If you’re staying in a particularly safe area, you can even take a taxi into town to explore on your own.
If you read vacation reviews, the number one complaint about all-inclusive resorts is the food. Although some all-inclusive resorts have restaurants where you can order off of the menu, almost all of them offer the main portion of their meals buffet style. I personally don’t mind eating at a buffet as long as there is something that I can eat. However, not everyone is a fan of buffet-style dining. If you can generally find something to eat wherever you go, the food selection would probably be fine. However, those looking for a culinary experience should probably choose a vacation where the dining options are more varied.
Tips for Selecting an All-Inclusive Resort
I’ve written about the value of vacation before, and I truly believe that all-inclusive resorts offer a lot of value for your money. If you’re looking for a relaxing trip on a budget, an all-inclusive vacation may be right up your alley. Here are some tips for those looking for the perfect all-inclusive resort:
Shop around. Make sure to check travel sites like Expedia, Travelocity, and Priceline for the best deal. You can also use these sites to include airfare in your total cost.
Be flexible with dates. Consider arriving and departing mid-week or vacationing off-peak to get the best deal.
Be flexible with your location. If you have your heart set on a particular resort, you may end up paying more. Instead, be flexible when it comes to where you stay. Consider a resort that is having a sale or even staying in an alternate location.
Have you ever been on an all-inclusive vacation? If so, what did you think?
