If your living room is feeling dull or lackluster, elevating your living space to have a more modern and sleek feel is your solution. Modern decor seamlessly blends style with functionality, creating an ambiance that feels timeless but also in the moment.
From the muted perfection of neutral tones to the boldness and power of a few carefully placed statement pieces, our 13 tips will transform your living room into a modern masterpiece. Crafting a living room that transcends time and trends while reflecting your personal taste and style, is the perfect way to decorate a space you’re sure to feel pleased with.
What makes a modern space, modern?
Modern decor is defined as distinct features that, together, create a sleek, clean and sophisticated aesthetic. As decor trends evolve and experience fluctuating popularity, modern decor shines in its timelessness. Still, the term “modern” is frequently misused in the realm of interior decoration. Its confusion with the contemporary style is fairly widespread.
However, the modern style that we encounter today actually stems from a design movement that originated at the cusp of the 20th century. This present-day modern style in furnishings and decor pays homage to natural materials, employs neutral or earthy tones and embraces a minimalist approach by removing excessive embellishments. While contemporary styling can encompass a diverse color palette, the modern style more strictly adheres to monochromatic hues.

13 modern living room ideas to update your space
The key to a successful modern living room design is finding a balance between functionality, aesthetics and your personal style preferences. These tips offer guidance to work conjunctively with your own unique tastes to achieve your modern masterpiece.
1. Paint the walls a neutral color
If you’re allowed to paint your walls in a rental (make sure to check with your landlord first), this is a great way to set the modern tone in your space. Whether that be a crisp off-white or a cool grey, neutral wall tones can shift the space from feeling dull to more modern in a few paint strokes.
2. Install open shelving
An open display shelf is a great way to combine clean lines and functionality. For a rustic modern look, try a wooden ladder propped up against the wall and adorned with your favorite decor items.
3. Try a natural rug
Modern living rooms often feel too simple. Add visual interest to the space with textures like a natural rug. A faux cowhide rug, furry rug or even a woven jute rug can break up the monotony of neutral tones and minimalist furniture while maintaining a stylish and inviting atmosphere.
4. Brighten the room with a simple floor lamp
By incorporating a simple floor lamp into your modern living room decor, you create a well-lit and visually appealing space. This piece offers some creative freedom when it comes to choosing the style of the lamp.
5. Invest in a statement art piece
A statement art piece serves as the visual center of attention in your living room. It’s the first thing that catches the eye when someone enters the room, which sets the tone for the entire space. This is important in modern design, where bold and captivating art piece breaks the monotony of minimalism and adds intrigue.
6. Opt for acrylic or glass pieces
Acrylic and glass pieces are a great option for working with a limited color scheme. For example, a transparent coffee table creates sleek sharp lines while naturally matching the colors around it. Acrylic furniture is also inexpensive and is easily repurposed in other rooms.
7. Upgrade your technology
Part of the modern aesthetic is the newest and freshest technology. Smart devices complement modern spaces well and seamlessly integrate into the sleek and minimalist design. Think smart lighting, speakers and other on-trend appliances.
8. Break the neutrality with geometric patterns
Introduce modern geometric patterns through rugs and throw pillows to infuse a contemporary vibe. Choosing a pattern that resonates with your personal taste is a great way to add personality to the space as well.
9. Play with decorative mirrors
Mirrors are great decor pieces that naturally reflect light which helps the space feel larger. On top of their benefits related to room size, they’re also neutral when it comes to fitting a color scheme. (And if you liked the one we featured two photos up, we linked to one similar to it here.)
10. Create continuity with wooden pieces
Wooden furniture is a staple when it comes to monochromatic living rooms. The natural color of the wood often seamlessly fits into the feel of the room, while remaining a timeless piece with repurposing opportunities in other decor themes down the road.
11. Remove unnecessary furniture
Negative space, which is defined as the intentional creation of empty spots, is a common theme in modernly decorated spaces. Less is more in a modern living room, so purging unnecessary decor items and furniture is a must.
12. Open the floor with wall-mounted shelves
If you struggle to fill large open shelving and want to utilize wall space, opt for wall-mounted storage, like floating shelves. This also creates more negative space, helping give your space a more modern feel.
13. Lean into monochromatism
Picking one color and using varying shades is the most common theme found in modern decor. The easiest way to go about crafting your color scheme is to select a base color and gather shades, tints and tones of that color. Create depth with contrasting light and dark variations by consulting paint experts or using color templates on Pinterest and other design platforms.

Simple strategies can turn your kitchen cabinets from cluttered to stylish.
Have you ever had a few friends over and turned around to find everyone in the kitchen? You prepared the living room with fresh flowers and fragrant candles and fluffed up your comfy couch, only to find your guests drifting back to the kitchen like moths to a flame.
Why? Considered the heart of the home, the kitchen is where all the action takes place. It’s where people grab a crispy cheese twist fresh from the oven, chat with the host, pour a glass of wine and linger.
And open the kitchen cabinets.
Suddenly, your spices appear a little disorganized, the plates overflowing, and where’s the perfect-sized container for leftovers? Is someone looking for the wine opener? It’s in the drawer to the right of the sink, buried under numerous kitchen utensils.
Fortunately, there are some simple strategies to take your kitchen cabinets from dysfunctional to fabulous and from cluttered to stylishly organized. Yes, it may seem a little overwhelming, but with these tips, you can do it! And, in the process of learning how to organize kitchen cabinets, you’ll find yourself enjoying the art of cooking and entertaining a little more.
1. Start by decluttering
As organizational expert Barbara Hemphill said, “Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions.” Start with three cardboard boxes or garbage bags labeled “donate,” “sell” and “trash.” Then, take one cabinet and drawer at a time, decide what you no longer use or love and place it in the appropriate container.
If you find yourself contemplating an item for several minutes, place it in a separate box marked “later.” This box will be tucked away in storage. If you haven’t pulled out any of your “later” items in one month, it’s time to release them to their forever home.
2. Put all like items together
Like attracts like, whether people, positive experiences or plastic food containers. Putting all like items together in separate boxes lets you see exactly what you’re working with. Eventually, you’ll find a place for everything and put everything in its place.
Before you start putting things in their rightful place, clean kitchen cabinets, shelves and drawers. You can make a natural, refreshing household cleaner with 1 cup white vinegar, 2 cups water and 15 drops each of lemon and lavender essential oils.
3. Reorganize according to zones
A kitchen has five main zones: food, cleaning, cooking, dishware storage and preparation. Consider storing items in the areas you use them. For instance, pots and pans go near the stove.
These zones are uniquely yours based on your lifestyle. For example, if you start your day with a smoothie and end it with a cup of tea, a little corner health bar may call to you. Consider placing your blender, teas and supplements in a countertop corner basket. You’ll find woven, wood and wire baskets explicitly designed to fit into corners.
4. File your dishes
If you have a choice between stacking or filing, filing almost always wins in the organizational world. Plate racks let you store dishes vertically. Bakeware racks are ideal for cutting boards, cookie sheets and even cumbersome pot lids. These vertical solutions offer easy access and align with the motto for how to organize kitchen cabinets: A place for everything.
5. Incorporate a pot and pan organizer
Pot and pan organizers provide a special place for every cooking item, from skillets to saucepans. Many are self-adjusting, letting you create the perfect size for every object while fitting right into your cabinet.
6. Add stylish storage
As you know, one of the biggest challenges is simply not enough space. One workaround is to take advantage of walls, sides of cabinets, and even under cabinets.
When living in an apartment, you can’t always drill holes into existing structures. Fortunately, manufacturers consider this dilemma. Here are a few drill-free items to consider:
Under cabinet coffee mug holders with a hanging arm that slides onto the shelf
A modern kitchen rail with stainless steel or bamboo hooks for holding utensils, cups, and cutting boards
Small clips on interior cabinet doors for holding measuring cups and spoons
7. Maximize cabinet space
Stacking or riser shelves may become your best friend. Simple, beautiful and easy to incorporate, they add another layer to your kitchen cabinet organization. From wood to metal and plastic in every color, there’s a stacking shelf with your name on it.
8. Make friends with clear storage bins
In today’s clutter-free environment, you can find storage bins and containers of every shape, size and color. Some good choices for organizing kitchen cabinets include clear bins that fit side-by-side. These storage containers let you use the entire shelf and easily slide in and out. They’re particularly helpful for those hard-to-reach top shelves.
The versatile bins are also ideal for your food cabinet, holding condiments, cereals, grains, soups, snacks and unrefrigerated produce. If your property manager’s okay with a few screws, pull-down shelves also offer an ideal solution for top shelves.
9. Decant dry goods
While you’re organizing your food area, consider decanting dried goods. Decanting refers to taking items like pasta, rice, flour, quinoa and sugar and placing them in matching containers or canisters. This streamlined look shouts well-organized and clutter-free. Make sure to label.
10. Hang a spice rack on the wall
If you only have time to perform one of these how-to-organize kitchen tips, this may be the one to consider. You’ll find that keeping your spices and herbs well-organized and visible adds color and charm to your kitchen. It also prompts you to get creative and explore global cuisines. Bon Appétit’s 20 must-have herbs and spices include allspice, cardamon, cumin, ginger, sumac and turmeric.
11. Divide your drawers
Simple inserts or drawer dividers provide just the right spot for everyday items, from silverware to knives and bottle openers. If you have a nice set of knives you wouldn’t mind having on display, a magnetic strip offers the perfect setting.
And don’t limit drawer dividers to your utensils. Almost everyone has a junk drawer that can turn into an organized hideaway with a few dividers.
12. Organize under your kitchen sink
The space under your sink can quickly get out of hand, yet it’s the perfect location to organize cleaning supplies. Take some measurements and then select stackable wire or mesh baskets that fit below the sink plumbing. These create the ideal place to stash disinfectant wipes, natural sprays, microfiber cloths and other essentials.
Consider self-adhesive hooks or over-the-door bars on the inside of the cabinet door. Here, you can hang small kitchen towels, scrub brushes and other cleaning tools.
13. Add an artistic pegboard
There was a time when pegboards were a great tool for organizing the garage, period. Take a glance at Pinterest, and you’ll see that times have changed. People use pegboards to organize everything imaginable while adding their unique artistic spin.
From shelves with plants to pots and pans and baskets holding lemons and garlic, this is the place to let your inner muse shine through.
14. Hang curtain rods
Yes, you can use curtain rods for more than hanging window coverings. One or two curtain rods with hooks can hold cups, towels, pans, cutting boards and more. Make sure to have a design in mind so your rod looks like part of your kitchen’s aesthetics and not an afterthought.
15. Use turntables
Turntables can make any space a functional masterpiece. That may be a slight exaggeration. They can, however, offer an easy method for organizing condiments, oils and other items you routinely use while cooking.
Create a kitchen worthy of your time
You spend a lot of time in your kitchen. Use these tips to make a room that’s fun, functional and organized, starting by organizing your kitchen cabinets and surrounding storage spaces.

Mid-century may be a classic style from the mid-1900s, but homes built in this style have a timeless appeal. With their distinct architectural features — which often include flat roofs, horizontal planes, and geometric shapes — they embrace simplicity, functionality, and a seamless integration with the surrounding environment.
Nature and lifestyle were key when designing mid-century houses, so many of them were built with floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the yard, sliding glass doors, and many access points to the outdoors.
Incorporating clean lines and basic shapes, simple furnishings, a practical Scandinavian approach with muted color palette, and warm inviting earth tones, simplicity is a notable characteristic of mid-century design. Mid-century modern homes also used spaces efficiently with their split-level design, which makes it easy to see why the this architectural style continues to fascinate with both its practicality and its aesthetic appeal.
Our favorite midcentury modern houses
For those who want to immerse themselves in the world of midcentury beauties, we’ve rounded up our favorites. Carefully restored by their owners while preserving their original character and incorporating modern amenities and technologies, we believe the examples below have done a great job at striking a balance between maintaining the historical integrity of the house and making it functional for contemporary living.
Without further ado, here are 13 stylishly refreshed-yet-classic mid-century modern houses that we’ve covered in the past, many of which had some quite famous owners (or architects).
#1 A secluded mid-century modern home with unique features and views of lush surroundings
There is so much to love about this Santa Clarita property — which was home to ‘Dallas’ Star Linda Gray for almost FIVE decades. Named Oak Tree Ranch after the stunning oak trees that grow on the property, the private California compound has many unique features.
Designed by acclaimed architect A. Quincy Jones, the mid-century house is unquestionably elegant and captivating. True to the principle of bringing the outside in, the floor is made of heart pine, (meaning the heart of the pine tree), sourced from a New Orleans schoolhouse.
The freestanding fireplace is another unique feature of this property. The kitchen was designed by renowned architect Josh Schweitzer who added beautiful racks to hang pots and pans out in the open, pro-style appliances, and a pizza oven.
Sitting on 2.7 acres of lush land, the property has stables for four horses, a tack room/barn, a north-south tennis court, a large swimmer’s pool with spa, organic gardens, koi pond, chicken coop, and an endless lawn to enjoy the outdoors.
#2 This mid-century modern home built by Steele & Van Dyk resembles a semi-secluded paradise
The 8.86-acre property located in the Sonoma County town of Sebastopol is one of the most spectacular (and most lovingly preserved) mid-century homes you’ll find.
It was once owned by Charles M. Schulz, the creator of the beloved comic strip Peanuts and his children have fond memories of the property, which was used by their father as a creative studio.
There were several lots on the original 27-acre property such as Schulz’ main house, his grandmother’s house, a large pond, a baseball field, a miniature golf course, a large swimming pool, an enclosed entertainment pavilion, and his studio, all surrounded by vineyards and apple orchards.
The family who bought the property after Charles Schulz’ ownership made a few changes to the studio but made sure not to alter the nature of the design.
They renovated the studio and turned it into an inviting one-bedroom home which operated as a licensed vacation rental for a few years.
True to the architecture of mid-century modern houses, the former art studio has clean lines, minimal decoration, and large, flat panes of glass windows and doors which allow a connection with nature.
With the home surrounded by natural beauty, you’ll find a four-hole golf course, Redwoods groves, and walking trails lined with numerous rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, dogwoods, several varieties of ferns, fruit trees, and plenty of flowers.
#3 One of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s last projects, a mid-century masterpiece
Sitting on 14 acres of protected land in New Canaan, Conn., we find one of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s final projects, built in 1955, just a few years before his death in 1959.
Known as Tirranna — a moniker inspired by an Australian Aboriginal word meaning “running waters”, as the home is cantilevered over a pond and overlooks a waterfall on the Noroton River — the property is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s largest residential properties.
The architect also lived here while building the Guggenheim Museum and even used some of the scalloped glass windows from the Guggenheim Museum project to complete the home’s south-facing greenhouse.
Clocking in at a generous 7,000 square feet, the 7-bedroom, 8.5-bath home blends geometric complexity with nature’s flowing curves, in typical Frank Lloyd Wright style.
Throughout the home, the architect combined and contrasted soaring ceilings and open living spaces with cozy and cocoon-like mahogany-paneled bedrooms.
The home’s functional wood-paneled and stainless-steel kitchen epitomizes the mid-century modern aesthetic, while each of the bathrooms are spa-like and adorned with spectacular wood panels and unique features.
#4 A Mid-century home in Palo Alto that has maintained the integrity of its original design
This mid-century modern home is so simple that it reads as sophisticated.
It bears the signature of internationally recognized architect and Frank Lloyd Wright protégé Aaron Green. The 3-bed, 2-bath home features extensive use of mahogany, slab floors with radiant heat, built-in beds, desks and dressers, and Formica counters.
With flat roofs, both the exterior and interior have a clean and functional design. Inside the home, there is minimal decoration and the various cabinetry adds depth and variation in elevation.
The large windows give magnetic views of the yard. All in all, a gorgeous home updated for modern living while still retaining its mid-century authenticity.
#5 One of the most spectacular mid-century modern houses with a Moroccan theme and great views of the Coachella Valley
This stylish home is located in a compound in Rancho Mirage’s Thunderbird Heights — a prestigious gated hillside community adjacent to Thunderbird Country Club.
The mid-century home was custom-built for famous entertainer Bing Crosby and his second wife, Kathryn Grant, and was an absolutely perfect fit for its celebrity owner who loved to live large.
Among its most striking features, Bing Crosby’s former home lists a large living room with a stone fireplace and bar, a chef’s kitchen, a movie theater, and a beautiful and spacious 1,400-sq. foot master suite with a stunner of a walk-in closet and a fireplace, as well as four additional en-suite bedrooms.
Spread over 1.36 acres of land, the phenomenal home has approximately 6,700 square feet of living space that extend into the outdoor areas.
The home’s most famous guests, though, were definitely Marilyn Monroe and John F. Kennedy. In honor of their stay there, the two-bedroom attached casita has been named the JFK Wing.
#6 An architectural gem with mesmerizing views of its lush surroundings and direct entrance to Rustic Canyon Park
Set in Los Angeles, this mid-century home designed by notable architect David Hyun has formerly been the residence of prominent entertainment lawyer Gary Concoff and his wife Jean.
The house dubbed ‘the Modern Tree House’ has large floor-to-ceiling windows which provide scenic views of the century-old trees that surround it and encourage a sense of harmony with the outdoor spaces it’s built around. The combination of the large windows and open floor plans let in a lot of beautiful natural light into the two-story home.
Notable features on the lower level of the house include an eat-in Eggersman kitchen, a full-service bar, a formal powder room, and three bedrooms. The distinctive spiral staircase leads to the primary suite upstairs fitted with generously sized closets as well as two separate offices and a large den/media room.
The massive backyard of the nearly quarter-acre property features a large swimming pool, a unique area for dining set amongst the trees, and a gate directly into Rustic Canyon Park, said to be one of the best parks in Los Angeles.
#7 The lovely mid-century modern house Richard Neutra designed for his secretary
One of the most impressive celebrity homes on our list, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea’s house is made out of two architecturally significant structures: The first is a modern heptagon-shaped house designed by AD100 architect Michael Maltzan and the other is a lovely midcentury-style house built by famed architect Richard Neutra in the early 1950s.
Clocking in at 1,350 sq ft, the midcentury-style home has 2 bedrooms, and one bath, and is surrounded by walls of glass.
The home was built by Richard Neutra for his secretary, Dorothy Serulnic and her husband, George, back in 1953. Neutra, one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century, made sure that his secretary’s home is as livable and comfortable as it is visually appealing.
He designed several built-ins including a sofa system with a record player and concealed speakers, multiple desks, shelving systems, a dining room table, and a sliding breakfast nook, which are still present in the house today (or, rather, were still there when Flea tried offloading his La Crescenda compound a while back).
Architect Michael Maltzan then built a dramatic, seven-sided house on the property half a century later. The spaceship-like house is surrounded by seven exterior walls (some made out of glass) and is anchored by an open-air courtyard that sits right at the center.
A small cabin built by artist and craftsman Peter Staley provides a little extra space for guests and an eye-grabbing feature.
#8 Master architect Richard Dorman’s award-winning home, the Seidenbaum Residence
Tucked away down a long private driveway into a quiet, secluded compound we find architect Richard Dorman’s Seidenbaum Residence.
With its timeless appeal and unique design, the home is nestled in the Hollywood Hills on Mulholland Drive, overlooking outstanding views of the San Fernando Valley and the Hollywood sign.
Spanning 3,198 square feet, the five-bedroom, three-bathroom home has two peaked roofs and clerestory windows that capture the California sunshine inside the main living area.
Boasting an open-concept layout, the home blends mid-century and modern designs. From the dining and main living areas to the kitchen, the fluid design captures a sense of tranquility amid the walls of glass that draw in the natural light.
Providing warmth and intimacy, the see-through, double-sided fireplace is a show-stopper in the great room.
#9 This elegant home with a zen factor beautifully remodeled for modern-day living
Originally built in 1955, this home offers a fresh, contemporary take on the timeless midcentury style. Esteemed architectural firm OWIU (which stands for the only way is up) updated the property, building on its mid-century modern legacy.
The 1,516-square-foot home is in Mount Washington, a historic neighborhood in the San Rafael Hills of Northeast Los Angeles. It has bright, warm interiors, and is filled with the natural finish of attractive light oak wood.
The house — which has retained its original charm —is all about comfort, timeless design, and an approachable elegance.Kane Lim from the popular reality show Bling Empire was once the owner of this beautiful property.
It has all the standard features of a mid-century home and then some, with floor-to-ceiling windows, clean lines, breathtaking views, and a deck in the primary suite that leads to a Japanese-style garden with bonsai and maple trees.
The house’s exterior has fresh pathways and gardening beds, a gate that leads to the lower portion of the property, and a large open space that has a sculptural staircase and custom wood bench surrounding a fire pit.
#10 A charming, thoughtfully updated former celebrity home on a quiet hilltop
On a quiet hilltop right above the famed Mulholland Drive sits a 4-bedroom hilltop hideaway once owned by power couple Emily Blunt and John Krasinski.
The secluded, single-level mid-century home has a large open plan design and walls of glass that allow light to enter rooms from multiple angles.
With soaring, beamed ceilings, wide plank hardwoods, and original stonework, the living room is as eye-catching as it is inviting and features a gas fireplace.
The primary bedroom suite is one of the main highlights of this home and it looks and feels like a retreat in itself. With its vaulted, beamed ceilings, and massive windows inviting the outdoors in, a sitting area, custom built-ins, a walk-in closet, and a marble-clad ensuite bath with a soaking tub and steam shower, it truly is a stylish and elegant space.
The flagstone patio is surrounded by mature oak and olive trees and features a bubbling fountain, making it a great place to relax and soak in the picturesque views of mountains, the canyon, and the slivers of the city skyline.
#11 A spectacular stilt house with jaw-dropping views and a unique taste of Los Angeles history
Nestled in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, this is one of 17 unique homes propped up over the side of the Beverly Glen Canyon. The mid-century house was tastefully modernized by its previous owner, acclaimed architect Donald M. Goldstein. It’s undoubtedly a part of architecture history in Los Angeles.
Known as Neutra’s Platform Houses because they were originally designed by legendary architect Richard Neutra, these gravity-defying homes are incredible. Also known as the Stone-Fisher Speculative Houses (as they were built for the Stone-Fisher development company), the unique abodes were later completed by architect William S. Beckett.
The one-story home creates the illusion of a floating vessel in the sky. The unique structure has a rectangular form, horizontal emphasis, long balconies stretching the full width of the house, and large windows to display magnificent views of the San Fernando Valley.
Some of the notable features of the 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom home include pyramid skylights, raised ceiling and roof lines, a 300+ bottle wine cellar, a Roman soaking tub, and its black metal exterior is coated with a 24-gauge Kynar finish.
#12 A classic mid-century house in a prime location with a long list of past celebrity owners
The star-studded Los Angeles Tree House — carefully tucked away from prying eyes in the famous Mulholland Drive — has attracted names like Ellen DeGeneres, Heath Ledger, and Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson as its owners.

Known for its thriving economy, diverse cultural tapestry and a harmonic symphony of natural beauty and industrial prowess, Seattle has become an urban lodestar, attracting individuals from all corners of the globe. The burning question that resides within the minds of these prospective newcomers is, of course, how far does an average salary in Seattle take you?
Take a hearty annual salary of $100,000 as an example, which stands just below the average median household income in the city and roughly twice the average per capita salary. Seattle has much to offer for those with this level of income, which fits snugly within many earners’ income brackets in the Emerald City. When negotiating Seattle’s ebbs and flows, it’s key to understand the particular tug of these Pacific Northwest cost-of-living currents.
Rent
A substantial chunk of most salaries should be allocated to housing. The median rent for an apartment in Seattle hovers around $2,876 per month. This may cause an involuntary gulp from those accustomed to the rental markets elsewhere, yet for this radiant cityscape, this price awards you the key to a well-situated, comfortable abode within the bustling heart of the Pacific Northwest.
Transportation
Now, once settled in your apartment, let’s discuss the next major category: transportation. Seattle is a city designed for both vehicular and non-vehicular movement. Owning a car could set you back approximately $9,282 annually when considering payments, insurance, gas and maintenance. On the other hand, with an ORCA card in your wallet — Seattle’s public transportation ticket to freedom — you’re looking at a manageable annual total of about $1,188.
Food
Diving into the culinary landscape of Seattle — a delightful medley of global and local cuisine — the average person spends about $3,000 annually on groceries. Add another $3,600 or so for dining out, and you’re fully equipped to relish in the gastronomical symphony of Seattle, from Pike Place Market to the blossoming food truck scene.
Entertainment
Entertainment, the sweet release from work’s daily grind, is a category with more personal variance. Seattle offers a spectrum of experiences, from the splendor of the Symphony at Benaroya Hall to the electric atmosphere at a Seahawks game. On average, an individual might expend around $2,500 annually on such delights, a reasonable sum to access Seattle’s pulsating heartbeat of culture and excitement.
Everything else
Beyond these primary categories, there are the inevitable and unavoidable expenses —healthcare, personal care, taxes — that are often underestimated but are part and parcel of urban life. Including these necessary expenditures, you’ll find that a $100,000 salary provides a comfortable, engaging and invigorating existence in Seattle.
Seattle job market at a glance
To begin, let’s talk about the behemoths, the ones whose shoulders bear the economic load of Seattle. Of course, it’s impossible to discuss the corporate landscape of the city without mentioning Amazon. Love it or hate it, Amazon isn’t simply the biggest employer in Seattle; it’s an entity that leaves its fingerprints on the city’s economic and architectural blueprint.
Similarly, there is Microsoft. While it resides in nearby Redmond, the reach of this colossal technological titan extends well into Seattle. The company’s high-tech operations and legions of software engineers contribute significantly to the city’s stellar economy, thereby cementing its status as a solid coastal city for tech titans.
Next, we cannot overlook the mammoth of aerospace, Boeing. Although its headquarters moved to Chicago, its largest division remains in the Seattle area, employing a massive number of people in the fields of aviation and engineering.
Speaking of scientific and engineering marvels, Seattle is a national nerve center for biotechnology and healthcare, with companies like the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Genetics leading the charge. Swedish Hospital and the University of Washington Medical Center, both of which are top-tier healthcare facilities, add to this healthcare tableau with their thousands of employees.
As we delve deeper, we find that Seattle’s economy has a firm foundation in retail as well. We see the presence of companies like Starbucks, whose green mermaid symbol appears on almost every city corner, and Nordstrom, the upscale fashion retailer, both headquartered in the city.
The final, crucial piece of Seattle’s vibrant economic puzzle is the Port of Seattle, which includes the maritime industry and Sea-Tac Airport. With cargo and cruise services, the port is a significant player in the local economy, while the airport connects Seattle to the world.
Settle down in Seattle
The average salary in Seattle may initially seem daunting, especially when compared to more affordable locales. But it’s critical to remember that living in Seattle offers you a front-row seat to a progressive economy, a world-class culture and an unmatched natural landscape that melds mountains and sea into a breathtaking display of unparalleled beauty.
So, when considering the average income in Seattle and how far a $100,000 salary might stretch, it’s not just a question of numbers. It’s about the quality of life, the thriving culture and the sheer joy of immersing oneself in the one-of-a-kind environment that is Seattle. All things considered, a $100,000 salary goes a long way in offering a full life in this Emerald City.
This month, more than 7,100 people who were charged illegal advance fees by Timemark, Inc. to renegotiate, settle, reduce, or alter the terms of their federal student loans will receive a check in the mail.
Payments will be sent on July 6, 2023, through Epiq Systems. If you do not receive a check and believe you are eligible for funds, you can submit a claim by visiting https://www.CFPB-Timemark.org . If you have questions about receiving a refund, email [email protected] or call 1 (866) 991-0913.
In July 2020, the CFPB settled with Timemark, Inc. for violating the Telemarketing Sales Rule. From 2016 through October 2019, the company used telemarketing campaigns to convince people with federal student loans to pay up to $699 in fees to file paperwork to reduce or eliminate their monthly payments, through loan consolidation, forgiveness, or income-driven repayment plans. The U.S. Department of Education, however, offers these options to student loan borrowers for free. To market its student-loan debt-relief services, Timemark, Inc. used two websites, timemarksolutions.com and loan-counselors.com, created and posted YouTube videos, and placed Google Ads. Each of these marketing channels provided a phone number for consumers to call to sign up for Timemark Inc.’s services.
Under the Telemarketing Sales Rule, it is illegal to request or receive any fees for debt-relief services sold through telemarketing before the terms of the debt are altered or settled and the consumer has made at least one payment pursuant to the new arrangement. Timemark, Inc. violated the Telemarketing Sales Rule because it requested and received payments from consumers within a few days, or at the latest, within 30 days of their enrollment—before the terms of the debts were altered.

Things are continuing to heat up in Zillow Group’s legal battle with discount brokerage REX Homes, as the September 18, 2023, trial date looms ever closer.
On Friday, Judge Thomas Zilly, the U.S. District Court judge in Seattle overseeing the lawsuit, issued a minute order denying in part and deferring in part Zillow’s motion for summary judgement in the case.
In mid-June, the three parties involved in the suit, Zillow, REX and the National Association of Realtors (NAR), all filed motions for summary judgment on at least some issues, if not the entire lawsuit.
Three of REX’s claims Zillow filed motions for summary judgement on were denied by Zilly, while Zillow’s motion for summary judgement on REX’s antitrust claim was deferred.
Originally filed by REX in March 2021, the lawsuit alleges that changes made to Zillow’s website “unfairly hides certain listings, shrinking their exposure and diminishing competition among real estate brokers.”
Two months prior, in January 2021, Zillow began moving homes out of its initial search results for sellers who chose not to use agents adhering to the NAR and local multiple listing service (MLS) practices.
In January 2022, NAR filed a countersuit claiming that REX uses false advertising and misleading claims to deceive consumers in violation of the Lanham Act, but the countersuit was dismissed in late April 2022.
In mid-May 2022, REX ceased its brokerage operations.
Since then, REX, Zillow and NAR have gone back and forth with filing various motions to compel during the discovery phase of the trial.
In his minute order filed on Friday, Zilly denied Zillow’s motion for summary judgement on REX’s Lanham Act claim, REX’s claim for unfair and deceptive trade practices and REX’s defamation claim.
In regards to REX’s Lanham Act claim, Zillow contended that REX cannot prove that the allegedly false statements in question were made in “commercial advertising or promotion,” and that REX cannot establish injury or damages. However, Zilly felt that Zillow had not demonstrated that REX is unable to satisfy the test for commercial advertising or promotion.
In its motion for summary judgement, Zillow also claimed that REX’s unfair or deceptive trade practices claim should fail if the Lanham Act claim fails. However, according to Zilly’s order, REX has pleaded “both the “unfair” and “deceptive” prongs” of a consumer protection act (CPA) violation.
“Zillow has not demonstrated that it is entitled to judgment as a matter of law with respect to REX’s CPA claim,” Zilly wrote.
Finally, Zillow’s motion for summary judgement on REX’s defamation claim also was also denied. In the motion, Zillow argued that REX’s defamation claim fails as a matter of law as REX cannot prove damages, however, during oral arguments REX noted that it only seeks nominal damages. Zilly denied the motion as he felt that given the record on this claim, “the Court cannot determine as a matter of law whether REX can prove the actual malice necessary to be entitled to nominal or presumed damages.”
NAR and REX also filed motions for summary judgement on the case in June, but rulings have not yet been issued.
“We continue to maintain the claims made in REX’s lawsuit are without merit. REX chose to use Zillow’s services to advertise their for-sale properties on Zillow – for free. Zillow has consistently advocated for outdated rules to be changed to allow the broader display of all listings on all platforms, including For Sale By Owner and listings from other companies like REX. Zillow’s business decisions were squarely focused on improving the data on our site and the experience for customers,” Will Lemke, Zillow’s corporate communications manager, wrote in an email. “We hope the court sees this suit for what it is: REX seized upon Zillow’s website design change to hide its own business failings.”
NAR also believes its side will succeed in the lawsuit.
“While NAR was not a party in Zillow’s filing, we still believe the law is on our side and we remain confident we will ultimately prevail,” Mantill Williams, NAR’s vice president of communications, wrote in an email. “NAR guidelines and local broker marketplaces create highly competitive markets, empower small businesses and ensure equitable home ownership opportunities, superior customer service and greater cost options for all buyers and sellers”
Lawyers for REX did not offer comment on the ruling at this time.

How To Get Paid To Watch Netflix
1. Closed captioning for movies and TV shows
Netflix is available globally, which means that people all over the world want to watch Netflix movies and TV shows, but they may not be available in their language.
Not only does closed captioning help non-native speakers watch TV and movies, closed captioning also assists people who have trouble listening to the audio and need to read the words instead.
Closed captioning is an extremely important need for this streaming service, and due to that, they need closed captioners.
Netflix uses freelancers for a lot of their closed captioning work. You may be able to find jobs by looking at Netflix’s preferred vendor list, heading to their website, and seeing if any of these companies have an opening for a closed captioner. You can find Netflix’s list here.
Transcriptionists are paid to listen to audio content and type what they hear. You must have a quiet place to work and be very detail oriented.

2. Build a movie review blog
If you love watching shows and movies, then you may be able to turn your passion into a way to make money by starting your own blog or YouTube channel.
With a movie review site, you can share your thoughts on the latest movies and TV shows, your recommended hidden gems, and more.
All you need is an internet connection and a laptop, to start watching Netflix content, and strong opinions about the shows and movies you’ll be reviewing.
With a blog, you could make money in a variety of ways, including placing affiliate links to movies you’re watching. You can use your blog to share your thoughts about movies you’ve watched and host online discussions on your website platform.
Another way to make affiliate income with a movie review blog is to share links to products related to the movie. When movies come out, there are usually a lot of different products that are for sale as well, such as T-shirts, books, toys, and more.
Below is how affiliate marketing works on a blog:
Affiliates are people or businesses who are paid to promote a product or service.
When you become an affiliate, you are given referral links to use when you promote something for a company. These referral links allow companies to track where the sale comes from.
Then, you place those links on your website, social media accounts, etc. in the hopes that someone will buy something through your link.
When someone makes a purchase through your unique affiliate link, the company knows where the customer came from and pays you a commission.
Another way to make money with a movie review blog is through display ads and sponsorships. These are ads that are typically placed in your blog posts that a reader would see as they are reading your blog post. Display advertising is very easy to get started with, but you will need page views in order to make a good income with them.
You can learn how to start a movie blog with my free How To Start a Blog Course. In this free email course, you will learn how to start a blog and make money from it. Over the course of seven days, you will learn how to decide what to blog about, how to create your blog using WordPress, how to make money blogging, how to get page views, and more.
Also related to this – you could get paid to watch movies on Netflix by starting a podcast or a Youtube channel on movie reviews as well, and many podcasters and YouTubers make money through affiliate links in the same way as bloggers do.
3. Start a career in the movie industry
There are many jobs in the movie industry if you want to learn how to get paid to watch Netflix. Careers in the movie industry include:
Makeup artist
Animator
Production Assistant
Casting Assistant
Screenwriter
Creative Analyst
Actor
Camera person
Costume designer
Video editor
Technician
And so much more.
Some of these jobs may require a degree or training program, and while it can take a lot of work to find the job of your dreams, it’s worth going for it if it’s what you really want to do. Plus, you will most likely need a resume and/or portfolio to get your foot through the door.
If you are interested, you can start working on a smaller scale with online video editing. You can work for vloggers, influencers, small companies, and anyone who’s putting out video content.
They have many of the same needs as large-scale movies, like lighting, sound, post-production, pre-production, scripting, and more.
Many people think that they have to move to California to work in the movie industry, but Atlanta, GA, Austin, TX, Albuquerque, NM, and Chicago, IL are all growing film towns. If you are set on large-scale films, you might consider moving to one of those cities to establish your career.
4. Voice over actor
You can get paid as a voice over actor and help make movies and TV shows on Netflix.
A voice over actor is the voice you hear in animated movies, TV shows, Youtube videos, narration for documentaries, and more.
TV shows and movies on Netflix use voice over actors all the time for the reasons above, but it’s also for dubbing. Because of its global audience, Netflix dubs movies in different languages so they can be watched by people all over the world.
You can learn more about becoming a voice over actor in How To Become A Voice Over Actor. Here, I chat with a voice over actor, who explains how she got into the field and she gives advice to beginners. The interview covers topics such as how much money a beginner can make, how to find your first voice over actor job, and more.
5. Watching Netflix while you house sit or pet sit
If you want to earn money while you are watching Netflix, one way would be to find paid house sitting or petting jobs.
House sitters are paid to take care of someone’s home while they are away. You may need to water plants, take mail in, do some light cleaning, take care of pets, and so on.
You have a lot of downtime as a house sitter, and you can spend that time watching movies and TV, and house sitters make anywhere from $25 to $50 per day.
Pet sitters make anywhere from $25 to over $100 per day. I have personally paid $100 per night to a pet sitter for a pet sitter to watch our dogs in her home.
If you are looking for a company to get started with, I recommend Rover. This is the website I have used many times in the past to find dog sitters, and I have family members and friends who list their pet sitting services on this website as well.
6. Netflix Tagger
Is Netflix tagger a real job?
There are several different ways you can get paid to watch Netflix shows and movies, and the most popular one right now is a Netflix tagger (also known as Metadata Analyst or Editorial Analyst).
Netflix Taggers work directly for the Netflix streaming platform.
So, what is a Netflix Tagger? A Netflix Tagger is a person who watches Netflix and adds the tags and categories to them in order to categorize the different movies and TV shows. The tags that you add may be the genre, mood, cast members, and more. These tags are so that people like you and me can find what we are looking for easier.
As a Netflix Tagger, you would be watching a lot of movies and TV shows in order to best complete the duties for this job.
Netflix is a very large company with over 12,000 employees. Due to that, they are often hiring. You can find the Netflix careers on their job board here to see if they are hiring for this position, as well as see other Netflix careers.
This position isn’t always open, and I know a lot of people want it whenever Netflix is hiring for it. Due to that, you want to make sure you have a deep understanding of what you are watching, as it can be a great opportunity for a person who wants to get paid to watch Netflix.
7. Sell Netflix merchandise
There are so many popular shows and movies on Netflix, and there are fans of these shows all over the world. That’s why one way to get paid to watch Netflix is to make and sell merchandise related to Netflix shows and movies.
You can make and sell coffee mugs, cards, stickers, calendars, t-shirts, and much more.
I’ve seen so many creative designs related to some of the Netflix shows and movies I love, and one of the best places to find them is Etsy.
That’s why I recommend checking out How I Make Money Selling Printables on Etsy. In this article, you will learn how to start creating and selling digital printables on Etsy to make passive income.
Digital printables are a great way to make money because you only need to create the file once, and it can be sold over and over again for somewhat passive income.
If you want to learn how to get paid with streaming services, printables and merch would work with any of them because they all have shows with popular characters and sayings that people go wild for.
Can I get rewarded with Viggle still?
I’ve heard a lot about Viggle, but I think the program is currently paused because the site has been down for quite a while. I still wanted to share information about Viggle because I know I will receive questions about it, if you’re searching “how to make money by searching movies?”
But as I said, Viggle is paused so I do not recommend signing up or spending too much time on it.
Below is what you need to know about Viggle.
The Viggle app was started in 2012, and it’s a way for you to watch TV shows and get rewarded with digital downloads, electronics, trips, gift cards, and more.
You get a point per minute for any songs you listen to or TV shows you watch.
They have over 7,000,000 registered users who have redeemed over $19,000,000 in rewards. Plus, Viggle is available across 170 TV channels.
You can get rewarded for watching TV shows and movies on Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. The points you earn can then be redeemed for gift cards to places such as PayPal, Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, and more.
What apps will pay me to watch movies?
Some apps and websites will pay you to watch movies, but it won’t be on Netflix.
If you are looking for other options, you may want to look into downloading the money making apps or signing up for the websites below:
Swagbucks – You can get paid to watch videos and movie trailers on Swagbucks, as well as give your feedback. So, how much does Swagbucks pay for watching videos? They say you can earn around $5 a day. The reason Swagbucks pays people to watch videos is because they want to introduce new brands and shows to consumers, and they also want valuable market research about what people think about different TV shows, networks, and movies. You won’t make a full-time income watching movies and videos on Swagbucks, but it’s an easy thing to have on in the background.
PrizeRebel – With PrizeRebel, you can watch short videos and earn Amazon gift cards. You just head to the Offer Walls tab on the website, and there are usually videos that you can watch to earn points.
InboxDollars – InboxDollars Videos pays you cash to watch free content from their partners and it is an app that you can download. These are usually short video clips about health, beauty, and sports. You can earn $0.01 to 0.04 per playlist. There is currently a $5 sign-up bonus as well.
With these apps and websites, you may be able to win cash prizes or get free gift cards right from your laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

Consumer Debt Legal Group took my money for 12 months. When I called to ask if I could make a partial payment, I was told they were canceling my account unless I could pay the full monthly amount.
They canceled my account the next day and told me that because they had done ” a substantial amount of work “on my case I was not entitled to a refund of the monies that they had collected. Before they canceled my account I had access to the client portal and had been monitoring it closely. there was no activity, no documents uploaded, no evidence of Correspondence between creditors and Consumer Debt Legal Group, nothing. I asked for verification of their activities on my behalf in the past 12 months since there was nothing in the portal that would suggest they’d done anything except collect my money . They verified that they had sent six (6)faxes, one to each of my creditors. Each fax contained the exact same language , the only change made was the name of the recipient. Sending 6 Boiler plate faxes does not constitute “a substantial amount of work” done on my case. Sending six boiler plate faxes does not entitle them to keep $2,500 of my money which now desperately need more than ever. Consumer Debt Legal Group did not help me . They stole my $2,500 and I’m still being contacted by collection agency’s.
Consumer Action Taken:
I called and asked to speak with the my case manager who has remained unnamed this entire time and the accounting department as well as asking to speak with one of the attorneys on staff. I emailed and called for days on end. On their website they promise a consult with one of their attorneys. I was never able to get through to anybody except the receptionist who was extremely cagey and shady and would not give me anyone’s name that I could speak to. I never received a call back from my case manager from an attorney or from the accounting department.

Though Pinterest may have driven most moodboards online, I still champion a good ole’ fashioned tearsheet. There’s just something about a tangible image. Maybe it’s their size or their saturated color. Or that I just still really like real magazines. I have stacks and stacks of tears in piles around my desk.
But then there’s another somewhat antiquated tool, the good ole’ fashioned clipboard remember those!. What happens when the two collide? A stellar display is born. Bringing back the clipboard is officially this week’s Idea to Steal.
Quicker than building a collage. Easy to swap out on a whim. A wonder and economical way to add a little display to your space. I say genius.
The only question now is where the heck can you still get a clipboard?!
