If you’ve fallen prey to a devious money scam, you’re not alone. In 2020 alone, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) received millions of scam reports, which amounted to more than $3 billion dollars in losses for those involved.
When you lose money to a scammer, it’s common to feel a little lost yourself. Fortunately, there are several organizations available, from local authorities to the federal government, to assist victims of these scams and even help them reclaim their money.
Read on for four steps to take if you’ve fallen for a money scam and some additional tips to protect yourself from future scammers as well.
What’s Ahead:
What to do if you’ve fallen for a money scam
Scammers are clever thieves, and they’re good at getting what they want. If you’ve fallen for a scammer’s tricks (see the list of common scams below), here are four steps you can take to report the issue, (hopefully) recover your cash, and even prevent the scammer from striking again.
1. Compile data and details about the scam
Before you reach out to your bank or the local authorities for help, make sure you have your story straight.
Gather any relevant documentation, such as email correspondence, the name and contact information of your perpetrator (if available), phone recordings (if applicable and available), and more. This information will not only help regulators identify and (hopefully) stop the scammer, but it can also help keep other would-be victims safe.
2. Contact your bank or the company you used to send money
As stated previously, scams are not uncommon in America. Consequently, many banks, payment transfer services, online sellers, and other relevant organizations have dedicated fraud departments to address the problem of phony charges. In some cases, these financial institutions can reverse the fraudulent transactions and return your money right then and there.
Depending on how the scammer acquired your cash, here is what the FTC recommends you do next:
If you paid with a credit or debit card…
Contact the company/bank that issued the card to report a fraudulent charge and request that they reverse the transaction.
If the scammer transferred money from your bank account…
Contact your bank to report an unauthorized debit/withdrawal and request that they reverse the transaction.
If you paid with a gift card…
Contact the company that issued the gift card to report the scam and request a refund.
If you paid through a wire transfer…
Contact your bank or the wire transfer company to report a fraudulent charge and request that they reverse the transaction.
If you paid through a money transfer app…
Contact the company that owns the app to report a fraudulent transaction and request that they reverse the payment. If the app is linked to your credit or debit card, report the charge to the company or bank that issued the card.
If you paid with cryptocurrency…
Contact the company you used to send money to report a fraudulent transaction and request that they reverse the payment.
If you sent cash via U.S. mail…
Contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (877-876-2455) to request that they intercept your package.
If the scammer has access to your financial information, such as a credit card or bank account, you should also freeze your credit report and place a fraud alert on your account in order to prevent the scammer from doing more damage. Or, consider closing the card/account altogether.
3. Report the scam
Perhaps the most important step for any individual to take following a money scam is to report it.
By notifying organizations like the FTC (the main agency that collects money scam reports) of the scam, you empower regulators to fight back against scammers. Agencies, like the FTC, compile scammer trends and habits and use the information to educate communities and prevent future crimes. In some cases, they are even able to gather enough incriminating data to take legal action.
Here are a few places that I recommend reporting your money scam to:
Federal Trade Commission: report the scam through their website or call 1-877-382-4357 (9:00 AM – 8:00 PM, ET).
FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center: if you’re a victim of internet crime, report the scam here.
SSA’s Inspector General: if a scammer has your social security information, report the scam through their website or call 1-800-269-0271 (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, ET).
Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA): to report an IRS imposter, call 1-800-366-4484.
National Center for Disaster Fraud (NCDF): if you’ve lost money through a form of disaster fraud, such as coronavirus-related scams, call the NCDF Hotline at 1-866-720-5721 or submit a complaint through their website.
For additional advice and even emotional support, contact AARP’s Fraud Watch Network. Their hotline (877-908-3360) can help victims of money scams determine the next best step.
4. Notify local authorities
Along with reporting scams to the FTC and other relevant regulators, you should also contact your local authorities.
Start by reporting the scam to your state consumer protection office. For stolen cash or possessions, you should contact your local law enforcement officials as well to file a police report. This does not only initiate an investigation, but it may help protect fellow community members from the same scam.
Finally, notify neighbors and local businesses of scammers in your area by reporting the incident to the Better Business Bureau. Their Scam Tracker can warn others and help prevent the scammer from causing more harm.
What are some of the most common scams?
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the phone is still a scammer’s primary weapon, and the most common type of scam is imposter scams. In fact, imposter scams amounted to nearly one-quarter of the 2.2 million scams reported to the FTC in 2020, with crafty con artists masquerading as anything from a government agency to a family friend.
Some of the most common scams — by phone, email, internet, and more — include:
Tech support scams.
Fake check scams.
Charity scams.
Disaster fraud (including coronavirus scams).
Internet scams (fake websites, emails, etc.).
Fake college loans and scholarships.
Fake prizes and sweepstakes offers.
Social Security Administration (SSA) and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) scams.
Tips to guard yourself against future scams
One crucial preventative measure you can take to protect yourself from money scams is to educate yourself on how scammers work.
Since scammers employ several routine tactics, such as offering financial aid that seems too good to be true or establishing a sense of urgency that encourages you to “act now,” there are plenty of red flags to watch for.
Here are some common scammer strategies that you should be aware of:
Saying you’ve been “selected” or “chosen” to receive a special prize or offer.
Guaranteeing you’ll receive money, benefits, etc.
Establishing urgency (“act now,” “this is a one-time offer,” etc.).
Offering “free” services, aid, etc.
Requesting payment in an uncommon way, such as through gift cards or wire transfer.
Using threats or demands to incite action (common for SSA and IRS scams).
Claiming to be a government entity or large organization, such as the IRS or Apple (this is common for phone calls).
Summary
Falling for a money scam can be a jarring experience. Unfortunately, it’s also a common occurrence in America.
Every year, scammers steal billions of dollars from unsuspecting Americans. To assist these victims and prevent scammers from doing more harm, organizations like the Federal Trade Commission are collecting data to disarm the thieves and warn the public. Many banks and financial institutions even have dedicated fraud departments to address fraudulent charges.
If you’ve been a victim of a money scam, fight back! Report the scam and help dismantle this destructive industry to protect your neighbors from the same fate.
Some say there is nothing like curling up with a good book on a rainy day. I say there is nothing like sitting down and putting on a rainy movie on a rainy day. Thanks to a popular internet forum, here is a list of their favorite films for a perfect rainy day.
1. Shutter Island (2010)
U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner (Mark Ruffalo) find themselves at Ashecliffe Hospital, a fortress-like insane asylum on a remote, windswept island in Shutter Island. They are there to investigate the disappearance of a woman who drowned her three children.
It mainly occurs during a massive, devastating storm when the power is knocked out. Throughout the story, it progressively worsens, only adding to the intensity and suspense of the film.
2. Se7en (1995)
Se7en follows detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and his new partner, the recently transferred David Mills (Brad Pitt), as they attempt to stop a serial killer before he can complete a series of murders based on the seven deadly sins.
One of the most well-known things about the film is it was always raining. Director David Fincher has since said this was his idea. He wanted the appearance of an oppressive, heavy rain that continues to fall with no end.
3. The Perfect Storm (2000)
Based on a true story, The Perfect Storm follows the courageous men and women who risk their lives daily working on fishing boats and rescue vessels. Their worst fears are realized when confronted by three raging weather fronts that unexpectedly collide to produce the greatest, fiercest storm in modern history.
4. Identity (2003)
The phrase “on a dark and stormy night” is the perfect way to describe this film. Identity occurs during a vicious storm that causes a group of strangers to hole up at a run-down motel. At the same time, a serial killer awaits execution for murdering a group of motel guests. Eventually, the weary travelers begin to be killed off one by one.
5. Twister (1996)
Twister is an epic disaster film that follows a group of amateur but spirited storm chasers trying to deploy a tornado research device during a severe outbreak in Oklahoma. While there is undoubtedly a lot of rain, there is a lot of devastation too. Maybe not be the best choice for anyone who has been through a natural disaster such as a tornado, but still a great watch.
6. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
The Day After Tomorrow doesn’t just feature rain; it depicts several catastrophic climatic effects following the disruption of the North Atlantic Ocean circulation. First, a series of extreme weather events usher in global cooling and lead to a new ice age.
7. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
In Blade Runner 2049, 30 years following the events of Blade Runner, bioengineered humans known as replicants are enslaved. It rains for most of the film, and while it might seem like there is no meaning behind it, there is.
Blade Runner 2049 has a glib view of the future in which corporations wreak untold damage to the lives of civilians. This recurring theme is reflected in its constant rain, intended to illustrate the effects of LA’s dangerously high pollution levels.
8. Jurassic Park (1993)
Jurassic Park is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar. Wealthy businessman John Hammond and a team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. As can be expected, this does not go well. During the most intense moments of the film, it is pouring rain.
9. Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
Bad Times at the El Royale centers on six strangers and an employee at the El Royale, a hotel located along the California–Nevada border, who arrive with dark personal secrets that eventually intersect on a fateful night in the late 1960s. One of the most memorable moments features Chris Hemsworth, who plays Billy Lee, approaching the hotel during an evening rain storm.
10. The Goonies (1985)
In The Goonies, a group of kids who live in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, attempt to save their homes from foreclosure.
In doing so, they discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. While they end up soaking wet as they run from thieves with bad intentions, they still find the time to be kids.

The technological gap continues to expand at a faster-than-ever pace. What were once modern staples are now outdated and ancient inventions. Here are eleven obsolete technologies that generation Zs won’t remember.
1. Physical Maps
Physical maps have become a thing of the past for the newest generations.
1. Physical Maps
“When I was planning my wedding last year, my parents showed me some stuff from their 1988 wedding. They had to make a map by hand (literally glued paper together) so people could figure out how to get from the church to the reception hall.”
Circa 2023: Not mapping the quest.
2. Floppy Discs
“Floppy discs, like not the 3 1/2 ones but the ones that were actually floppy, like made with some sort of Styrofoam type substance. You don’t remember those unless you’re in your 30s or your parents were especially resistant to new technology,” one comment read.
3. The Not-So-Compact Discs
Burning CDs is out of the question for anyone born before 1995.
“They are basically obsolete. Almost everyone I know has an AUX cable or BT stereo in their car and plays Spotify, Pandora, or YT music.”
4. Radios
“Not the ones in your car, but ones you have in your home,” said one Redditor.
“… And TVs that are cube-shaped, lol.”
That is the truth.
5. Carbon Paper
As of 2023, carbon copy paper has left the building.
“I had to explain what it was to someone in her twenties. The look on her face …”
6. Video Rental Stores
The phrase “please be kind, rewind” has been lost to many a gen z.
7. Manual Transmissions
Driving expensive Maseratis, Lamborghinis, or Ferraris can be challenging.
“Standard Transmissions. Most young people can’t wrap their heads around it.”
8. Checkbooks
Physical checks as a form of payment is an ancient practice.
“I’m 19, but a checkbook. My grandma taught me to balance one when I was young, and I’m probably an enigma for the Gen Zs.”
9. Payphones
Before the introduction of mobile phones, pay phones were a hot commodity.
“Phone booths at every convenience store, at every gas station, in every mall, & on street corners. Hoping that you had a dime (or a quarter) to enable you to make a phone call. And ALWAYS checking the coin slot at the end of a call to see if any change was there.”
10. Answering Machines
The stress behind creating the perfect outgoing message was real.
“You had to buy a stand-alone device/appliance that you plugged your phone’s cord into (everyone has covered that part already, lol) and then into the wall,” one comment read. “
Then you had to set it up so it knew what calls to answer or not (phone or fax) and when (usually [the] number of rings, and later had home/away/vacation options).”
11. Landline Phones
Not too long ago, landline phones were popular household items.
“Home phones, we were still using them when I was younger.”
However, in today’s world, the landline is few and far between.

These 10 Terrible Movies Are Still People’s Favorites
Classical Hollywood shaped modern filmmaking in almost every way, so it’s no wonder that burgeoning film fans would want to dive into the era. Like any era, the period from the advent of sound through the 1960s offers a wide variety of films, from comedies and melodramas to noir films and westerns.
That variety makes it difficult to narrow down what movies from the era are essential viewing, which is probably why one film fan creates an online discussion about which films can be called Classical Hollywood essentials. Other cinephiles are more than happy to chime in, and here I’ve collected ten of the most agreed-upon answers that I just so happen also to have some feelings about.
1. The Night of the Hunter (1955)
The only film ever directed by actor Charles Laughton, The Night of the Hunter is iconic for its visual style, dark fairytale atmosphere, and mesmerizing Robert Mitchum performance. The film centers on Mitchum’s villainous preacher, who attempts to force two children to tell him where their father hid the money he stole.
2. His Girl Friday (1940)
Howard Hawks directed several masterpieces in several genres, many of which were suggested as essential by different respondents. But His Girl Friday is the most widely agreed upon essential film in his lengthy filmography. The screwball comedy classic stars Cary Grant and Rosalind Russel as reporters and exes who fall back in love as they cover an increasingly wild story.
3. Citizen Kane (1941)
Another filmmaker who made many films people love, Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane is still the most widely loved of his movies. The film tells the story of the titular Charles Foster Kane’s life through various interviews with the people who knew him, offering different perspectives on the man. It’s a remarkable film that some may say is overrated, but it got that way for a reason.
4. Double Indemnity (1944)
Like Howard Hawks, Billy Wilder’s career spans multiple genres, all of which are well represented by film fans’ suggestions. But his noir classic Double Indemnity is the most essential. It’s quintessential noir, with a story told in flashback with voiceover, effective use of shadow, and a beautiful femme fatale played by the always great Barbara Stanwyck.
5. Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
The most beloved of the three notable films starring James Dean, Rebel Without a Cause is also one of director Nicholas Ray’s best films. The story follows three teens who each struggle with their families as they begin to develop bonds that form them into a chosen family. It’s a powerful melodrama that’s also visually beautiful.
6. The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Another film starring Cary Grant as an ex-husband who may be rekindling things with his ex-wife, George Cukor’s The Philadelphia Story, also stars Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart as Grant’s romantic interest and rival, respectively. It’s a delightful comedy full of quick wit and incredible chemistry between its three leads.
7. The Maltese Falcon (1941)
John Huston, who many may know as Faye Dunaway’s father in Chinatown, is yet another fantastic Classical Hollywood filmmaker whose films split votes. Movie lovers had difficulty picking between The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Maltese Falcon, but ultimately more went with the latter.
The film, an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammet, tells the story of private eye Sam Spade who gets caught between multiple parties on the hunt for a precious statuette.
8. Rear Window (1954)
While there are many filmmakers of the Classical Hollywood era that made multiple films movie lovers recommend, no one made more than Alfred Hitchcock. From my personal favorites, Psycho and Rebecca, to the mistaken identity thriller North by Northwest and even his lighter romantic film To Catch a Thief, and more, the master of suspense is all over the recommendations for essential Classical Hollywood films.
But the one film that most people vote for is his neighborhood thriller Rear Window, which centers on a man stuck in his apartment after an injury who begins to suspect that his neighbor has committed murder.
9. The Searchers (1956)
Westerns were a staple of the Classical Hollywood period, so it’s somewhat surprising that there are fewer votes for western films. Among the many suggestions, Shane and Red River get some attention, but The Searchers is the western that receives the most agreement. The film, by legendary western filmmaker John Ford, follows an aging Civil War veteran (John Wayne) as he searches Texas for his abducted niece.
10. All About Eve (1950)
Many film fans agree that All About Eve, which still holds the record for most actresses nominated for Oscars from the same film, is an essential Classical Hollywood film.
The movie follows actress Margo Channing (Bette Davis) and the titular Eve (Anne Baxter), who begins forcing herself into Margo’s life, upending her idyllic life and successful career. But if that doesn’t sound interesting enough, the film also includes Marilyn Monroe in a supporting role.

We’ve all been there – sitting through a movie that we can’t help but cringe at, but somehow it still manages to hold a special place in our hearts.
These 10 Terrible Movies Are Still People’s Favorites
You know the movie you watched that had God-awful effects and made you almost smash your TV? We all hate those. Great movie SFX can shoot the viewer’s experience from two to one hundred in a heartbeat.
Someone in an online film forum, probably having had enough of terrible special effects, asked for some foreign movies with remarkable special effects. These are our favorites from the recommendations.
1. Hero (2002)
Hero is set in Ancient China, and Jet Li stars in it. Fun fact: his name in the film is Nameless (无名). The movie is about Nameless recounting how he fought the King’s enemies and won. But the King, who thinks he’s lying, questions the details of his story.
A fan thinks, “Hero is one of the most visually stunning movies I’ve ever seen.” What else can you expect from the most expensive project in China in 2002?
2. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is another Chinese movie directed by Ang Lee and stars Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun-fat, Zhang Ziyi, and Chang Chen. The film has just the right mix of action, adventure, good acting, and beautiful effects. As a result, it became the highest-grossing foreign-language film produced overseas in American history.
3. Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
All ye lovers of dark fantasy horror films get in here! This Spanish film was so good that it won many international awards, including three Academy Awards.
The plot follows 10-year-old Ofelia (played by Ivana Baquero), who goes into a magical labyrinth and has to complete some quests to prove that she is royalty. Spoiler alert, Ofelia dies in this movie. Sad, but this makes the film more interesting for some people. One said, “My absolute favorite movie ever. So good.”
4. Space Sweepers (2021)
The film is regarded as “the first Korean film space blockbuster.” It is set in a time when Earth is uninhabitable, 2092. The new “Earth” is for only 1% of the 1%. The fate of the other 99% is anyone’s guess.
Critics agree the movie has “relatable characters and impressive effects.” Still, you would have to see it yourself to agree or disagree.
5. Rigor Mortis (2013)
Back to our horror movie lovers, Juno Mak and Takashi Shimizu directed and produced this Hong Kong horror film. You know those films you watch with keen interest and total amazement, and then after an hour of being entertained, you find out, at the very end, that all was not as you thought it was. This is one.
Ultimately, we find out that most of the story didn’t happen. It was all in the mind of the main character. Oops! Did I forget to say spoiler alert?
6. Sputnik (2020)
Russian Horror movies are one of the best horror movies out there. Case in point, Sputnik. Egor Abramenko directed this one.
Oksana Akinshina stars in this Sci-Fi horror as Tatyana Yuryevna Klimova. She gets recruited to figure out how to help a cosmonaut named Konstantin, the sole survivor of a space accident. Except her recruiter lied to her.
7. Train To Busan (2016)
What is good horror without flesh-eating zombies? This South Korean horror film has one of the best effects from movies released in 2016.
The drama takes place on a train on its way to Busan. Seok-woo, played by Gong Woo, and his daughter Su-an, played by Kim-Su-an, are on the train to see his ex-wife. Let’s just say they never got to Busan. Although the first movie was a huge hit, the sequel, released in 2020, was less successful than the first.
8. Troll Hunter (2010)
This Norwegian film follows a group of students who want to make a documentary about a bear poacher in the forest.
After a series of searches and investigations, they find out that there is no bear poacher; instead, there are trolls in the forest. André Øvredal wrote and directed the film, featuring various famous Norwegian comedians.
9. Night Watch (2004)
We have another Russian horror film on our hands. The storyline of this film puts darkness and light against each other in a great war, but no side wins, so they reach a truce. Night Watch, directed by Timur Bekmambetov, received mixed reactions from critics. Still, the movie has many lovers.
10. The Wandering Earth (2019)
Apparently, Asians have the movie world on lockdown as far as special effects are involved. The last movie on the list is a Chinese science fiction film. It is set in 2058; the sun is dying out, and Earth is in danger. The plan is to find a way to move Earth out of its orbit and into a new one. Did they succeed? Only one way for you to find out.
Frant Gwo directed the film. It set a record in the Chinese film industry by earning more than £232 million in six days.

What’s the most boring sport to watch? After polling the internet, people voted these ten sports to be the most boring to watch of all time.
1. Professional Fencing
Pro fencing could be more entertaining. Fencers are moving so fast that you have no idea what is happening. One person added, “So it’s a couple of people with swords bouncing back and forth for about 30 seconds, SOMETHING happens, and then it’s over.”
2. Little League Tee Ball
Another user suggested, “Little League Tee Ball when your kid isn’t up.” Finally, a third agreed, “There is nothing as excruciatingly painful as that first year of “kids pitch” baseball in the heat and humidity of a Midwestern Summer day. I cried tears of joy when my kid gave up baseball in favor of Summer vacations.”
3. Drone Racing
Did you know Drone Racing was a sport? Someone confessed, “I saw a drone racing on ESPN the other day, and I was like “what the heck am I watching?” While many agreed with the sentiment, others suggested it’s probably fun to play.
4. American Sports
American sports came in number four on this list. One said, “They’re probably not the most boring, but the endless commercials and time-outs make American sports unbearable to watch.”
Several people agreed that the commercials make watching American sports, especially football, dreadful. One admitted to loving NFL football but not watching because it takes too long with advertisements. Another shared, “Redzone is your friend. Seven hours of commercial-free football.”
5. Golf
Many people agreed that watching golf was dull. One added, “I thought watching golf was terrible until I had a long drive with my old boss during the U.S. Open. It turns out golf on the radio is worse.”

Nothing is more boring than watching two people circle one another and actively avoid doing the one thing everyone is paying to see them do.” “Especially a heavyweight fight. The fighters are either bangers or duds, with no in-between,” another added.
8. Fishing
Fishing made the number eight spot on this list, and I’m honestly surprised it’s not higher. One user shared, “I used to film and edit for a fishing show, and can confirm.
I would have maybe 6-8 hours of footage that I’d cut down into the most exciting 22.5 minutes, which, if you don’t get excited by slow-mo fish thrashing, you’re in for a boring time.
9. Electronic Sports (Esports)

Surfing. Hours of contestants are just bobbing around the ocean, and commentators are trying their best to fill the gaps in the action. One user admitted, “I still watch almost every primary contest, though.”
Another added, “The first time I watched it was during the Olympics. I realized that there is not only skill but also strategy since you’re head to head. I also learned there is so much waiting and bobbing.”

What’s Ahead:
Overview of the best cheap cell phone plans
Boost Mobile
Price range – $10 to $50 per month.
Network details – T-Mobile.
Contract – No contract required.
Tired of paying an arm and a leg on your cell phone bill and want to save on wireless? With Boost Mobile, you could pay as little as $10 a month for a simple, contract-free plan. Boost Mobile’s cheapest plan includes unlimited talk and text and 1GB of data. You also have the option to add on additional “data packs” if you need more data in a given month.
If you’re looking for unlimited data, Boost Mobile’s $50 per month plan features unlimited talk, text, and mobile data, along with a 12GB mobile hotspot. You can add another line to the plan for only $30 per month. Boost Mobile even features an “Affordable Family Plan” with unlimited talk, text, and data for only $150 for five phone lines.
Boost doesn’t make you sign any long-term contracts, so you’re never locked into an extended agreement. The company uses the T-Mobile network and claims to offer coverage in 99% of areas nationwide.

Mint Mobile
Price range – $15 to $35 per month.
Network details – T-Mobile.
Contract – 3-, 6-, or 12-month contract.
If you’re looking for an affordable plan with unlimited data, Mint Mobile is an attractive option. The company offers unlimited talk, text, and data for just $30 per month. Data switches seamlessly between 5G and 4G LTE, using whichever is strongest in your area.
Mint also offers a basic cell phone plan with unlimited talk and text and 4GB of data for just $15 per month. All Mint plans include a mobile hotspot at no extra charge, and you can always add more data to your plan if you run out before the month is up.
Mint Mobile uses the T-Mobile network, and you can buy a new phone or bring your own (as long as it’s compatible with the network and isn’t locked).
Unlike some other cheap cell phone plan providers, Mint does require customers to sign a contract for 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month plans. The 3-month plan is a great way to give the service a whirl, and then you can always sign up for a 12-month plan in order to lock in Mint Mobile’s low introductory prices.

Xfinity Mobile
Price range – $15 to $60 per month.
Network details – Verizon.
Contract – No contract required.
Some people use a consistent amount of data each month, but others may have different data needs depending on their work, personal life, and travel plans. Xfinity Mobile makes it easy to transition seamlessly between plans with unlimited data and pay-as-you-go plans with a limited amount of data each month.
Their basic plan starts at $15 per month for one line and comes with 1GB of data. Their unlimited data plan starts at $45 per month. Best of all, you can switch between unlimited and by-the-gig plans whenever you need to.
You can also purchase an unlimited plan for some lines in your group, while paying by the gig for others. This is a great option if you need unlimited data but have other family members, like young children or elderly relatives, who only need talk and text capabilities.
Xfinity Mobile uses Verizon’s network, which means that it has good coverage nationwide. You can bring your own phone to a plan, or purchase a new one. Xfinity Mobile also works with tablets and smartwatches, so you can stay connected on all of your devices.
Xfinity Mobile is only available to existing Xfinity Internet customers, so if you don’t already have Xfinity as an internet provider, it may not be the best fit.

Ting
Price range – $10 to $45.
Network details – T-Mobile and Verizon.
Contract – No contract required.
Ting shares many great features with some of the other providers on this list: extremely low prices, flexible monthly plans, and no contract required. For example, you can purchase a plan for as low as $10 per month for unlimited talk and text, plus an additional $5 per month per 1GB of data.
But where Ting really shines is its customer service. You can contact customer support over the phone, chat online, or submit a ticket if you’re having difficulties. Ting’s customer service representatives are always there to help.
If you’re looking for unlimited data, Ting has that too, with unlimited plans starting at $45. All plans come with the option to use a portion of data as a hotspot. Ting uses the T-Mobile and Verizon networks, so odds are it provides good coverage no matter where you live.
Also need internet? Ting provides fast, affordable fiber internet in some select cities, including Charlottesville, VA, Wake Forest, NC, and Westminster, MD.

Cricket Wireless
Price range – $30 to $50 per month.
Network details – AT&T.
Contract – No contract required.
Many cheap cell phone companies are entirely digital affairs. While it’s possible to purchase a plan, order a new phone, and manage your account entirely online, some customers may prefer in-person assistance. If that’s the case, Cricket is a great option, with brick-and-mortar locations in communities all around the country.
Cricket plans range from $30 to $60 per month for one phone line. While these prices are a little higher than many competitors, you can lower the price per line by adding additional lines.
The $30 per month plan comes with unlimited talk, text, and 2GB of data, while the $60 per month plan comes with unlimited talk, text, and data. There are also plenty of options in between if you only use a moderate amount of data.
Cricket Wireless is owned by AT&T and uses the AT&T network for its customers. Cricket claims that they provide coverage for 99% of Americans. There’s no credit check, no hidden fees, and no annual contract, so you can change your plan at any time.

Tello
Price range – $5 to $39.
Network details – T-Mobile.
Contract – No contract required.
Need a basic cell phone plan and have an extremely limited budget? You can get a basic phone plan with Tello for just $5 per month. No, that’s not a typo. Tello’s most basic plan comes with unlimited text, 100 minutes for phone calls, and no data.
But Tello doesn’t only have the least expensive bare-bones plan. At $39 per month, a plan with unlimited talk, text, and data is also extremely affordable. Plus, Tello allows customers to mix and match plan options.
You can choose exactly how much data and how many minutes of phone service you need, so you never have to overpay for services you won’t use. For example, if you use a medium amount of data but only talk on the phone a couple of times a month, you could choose a plan with 100 minutes of phone service and 8GB of data for $26 per month.
If you don’t want to bother with creating a custom plan, you can also choose from one of Tello’s premade plans ranging from $10 to $39 per month. If you need to make an international call or text, Tello’s pay-as-you-go model means that it’s surprisingly affordable.

Visible
Price range – $40 per month.
Network details – Verizon.
Contract – No contract required.
Visible offers an affordable cell phone plan with attractive referral bonuses for customers who convince friends and family members to sign up. The basic plan starts at $40, which is a bit higher than some competitors. But each time you refer a friend, you get a month of service for only $5.
You can also add friends and family members to your plan in order to lower your bill through the Visible’s Party Pay option. With Party Pay, costs drop to $25 per line for parties of four or more.
All plans come with unlimited text, talk, and data. Visible uses Verizon’s network, so coverage is good in most areas in the United States. You can also call and text loved ones in Canada, Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico at no extra cost.
While Visible doesn’t have the extreme budget plan offerings of some competitors, it’s a good fit for customers who know they want unlimited data, text, and calling but don’t want to pay the high cost of a plan from a big three provider.

Twigby
Price range – $9 to $43 per month.
Network details – Verizon and T-Mobile.
Contract – No contract.
Looking for a dead-simple phone plan with built-in flexibility and excellent coverage? Consider Twigby, which offers affordable plans starting at just $9 per month before discounts.
Not only does Twigby offer reasonably priced plans, but they also feature some hefty discounts for new customers. Customers can earn a whopping 50% off the sticker price for the first six months. This means that a bare-bones plan with no data and 300 minutes costs a mere $4.50 per month for the first half of the year. A more generous plan with 10GB of data and unlimited minutes costs only $21.50 a month for the first six months.
Twigby plans also come with international calling and texting, WiFi calling and texting, and the ability to use a hotspot at no extra charge. You can buy phones directly from Twigby, or bring your own phone if it’s compatible.
Unlike many competitors, Twigby doesn’t offer any plans that come with unlimited data. The highest amount of data you can purchase as part of a plan is 10GB. For people who need to use their phones a lot without connecting to WiFi, this means that Twigby might not be the best option.
That said, Twigby offers impressively affordable plans with great customer service and plenty of extra perks. Plus, unlike big-name cell service providers, Twigby is refreshingly honest and upfront about pricing and plans.

How we came up with our list of cheap cell phone plans
We looked for cell phone plans that were affordable, flexible, and came with a variety of different options.
All of the providers on this list provide affordable, low-cost plans ranging from $5 to $60 for a single line. On the low end, you can get a budget phone plan with texting and minutes for just $5 a month from Tello. On the other hand, you can get a more moderately priced plan with unlimited data, talk, and text from almost any of these providers.
We also looked for flexibility when it came to contracts, data usage, and billing. Most of these providers let you pay month to month rather than locking you into a year-long contract. Many also allow you to seamlessly switch between plans depending on your needs that month.
Finally, we looked for plans with options. Not everybody has the same cell phone needs, and you shouldn’t have to pay for services that you never even use. These providers offer a variety of different options, whether you only use your phone to call and text, or if you primarily use it for data and as a hotspot.
What are cheap cell phone plans?
Cell phones are ubiquitous in this day and age, but they don’t come cheap. On top of the cost of the phone itself, customers also have to pay for cell phone service and the ability to call, text, and use data.
Cheap cell phone plans aim to undercut behemoth competitors like Verizon and T-Mobile by offering the same service at a lower cost. Many also offer the ability to customize and fine-tune plans according to your particular needs.
Whether you need to start paying your own phone bill for the first time or you’re contemplating switching from a pricier plan, these cheap phone plans could end up saving you a good chunk of change each month.
Who should use a cheap cell phone plan?
People who want to save money
The main draw of cheap cell phone plans is that they save you money without sacrificing quality. These plans are able to provide the same overall level of service for a fraction of the cost.
People who want a simple plan
Don’t need all the bells and whistles of a fancy cell phone plan? Many of these providers offer bare-bones cell phone plans at bottom-of-the-barrel prices.
Who shouldn’t use a cheap cell phone plan?
Those locked into a contract
If you’re already locked into a contract with another provider, it could be costly to switch. If you’ve bought a phone from another provider, you may not be able to use that phone with a different carrier.
Those who are happy with a traditional cell phone plan
If you’re happy with your current coverage, there’s no need to switch. That said, you’ll likely be able to find a better deal with a cheap cell phone plan.
Most important features of cheap cell phone plans
While cheap cell phone plans share many similarities, they’re not all created equal. Which one is the right fit for you depends on what features matter most to you.
Cell phone coverage
Cell phone coverage is one of the most important features when it comes to any cell phone. Good coverage allows you to easily make calls and texts without any delay or lag time.
Unlimited data options
Once an optional extra in many cell phone plans, unlimited data is now one of the most sought-after features. Just keep in mind that providers will typically drop your data speed after a certain threshold, meaning that power users may face low speeds toward the end of the month.
Flexibility
Gone are the days where customers are locked into two-year contracts with big-name providers. Cheap cell phone plans usually don’t require a commitment longer than a month, and you’re free to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your plan at any time.
Price
You don’t need to pay an arm and a leg just for decent cell coverage and high-speed data. Cheap cell phone plans can often provide the same basic services as a big provider with a much lower price tag.
